The Beal Mountain Mine near Anaconda, MT is an interesting case history of a mine that has continued operations despite several large pit wall failures over a period of about 10 years. The largest event involved some 3.9 million tons of rock that has moved steadily at a rate of about 0.05 ft/day since 1992. This paper documents the geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring programs implemented at Beal to provide the company with a comfortable baseline that supported ongoing operations. The success and failure of a variety of stabilization measures will be discussed, along with typical instrumentation responses for several significant events. The success of Beal Mountain serves as a good model for mines faced with serious geotechnical challenges.

Highland Valley Copper is a large open pit copper mine in the southern interior of British Columbia. Machine guidance technology using the Global Positioning System (GPS), was first implemented at the mine in late 1996 for blast hole drill navigation. The purchase of a third BE49R drill in 1998 completed the change to GPS navigation for all the mine?s drilling. The acceptance of this technology was almost immediate at both the operator and management levels. With the purchase of a new P&H 2800 shovel in 1997, the opportunity was taken to extend GPS navigation to a shovel. Due to communication restrictions, this was not as successful as envisaged. In late 1999, following a cost benefit analysis, a three-shovel trial of Caterpillar?s Computer Aided Earthmoving System (CAES), was initiated. The trial was successfully concluded in June 2000 and a further two shovels were equipped. Acceptance of this system has been very good at all levels, which has undoubtedly contributed to its success. In September 2000, CAES was extended to the dozer fleet with the purchase of a new track dozer. The CAES equipped dozer is used for pit production and project work. It is planned to extend CAES to the rest of the shovel fleet in 2001, along with a production front-end loader and one or two more track dozers.

Tooth wear on mining shovels presents a challenge for productivity. A shovel with worn teeth suffers from increased digging forces, longer fill times, and an increased likelihood of lost or broken teeth and adapters. Efficient maintenance planning relies on knowledge of tooth decay rates and patterns. A fully automated wear monitoring system can record detailed logs of tooth wear, permitting G.E.T. personnel to optimize maintenance scheduling. Studies have demonstrated that planned tooth change-outs result in significantly reduced costs as compared to unplanned maintenance. A machine-vision-based tooth-wear monitoring method is introduced. A rugged camera is installed on the boom of cable shovels, or on the stick of hydraulic shovels. The images are processed using a photogrammetric algorithm to determine the individual tooth lengths. Tooth length data is collected at intervals during shovel operations, forming a profile of the current wear state, speed of decay, wear pattern, and expected lifespan of teeth. A case study in a South American mine on a Komatsu PC8000 hydraulic front shovel is presented. Tooth wear is tracked over a 6-day period and wear rate statistics are computed for 6 teeth. This validates the system and provides an example of how wear patterns can be recorded and analysed by an automatic system. Armed with this data, mine personnel can reduce the cost and lost time due to unplanned maintenance, and observe the effects of mine conditions and operator behaviour on tooth wear.

"Over the last few decades, the emphasis on affordability and reduced cost of ownership has necessitated the development of innovative processes to carry out repairs in aero engine components. Conventional weld and braze repairs have evolved into advanced, sophisticated processes using state of the art knowledge in lasers, robotics and materials technology. This paper illustrates past and present scenarios in an attempt to illustrate progress that has been made in this area. The problems encountered in the past have been detailed along with the solutions that have been developed and commercially implemented to address these issues. Apart from technical progress, this presentation also addresses the progress made in business approaches and in Certification/Regulatory issues surrounding aero engine repair. Progress in Technology Repair technologies have also been the embryo from which new and revolutionary manufacturing technologies have evolved as well. Electron Beam Free Forming and LENS are examples of how a completely new manufacturing concept can evolve what was originally only a process to join metals. The current and future potential of these spin offs is discussed providing examples of application. While several problems have been solved over time with the implementation of advanced repair technologies, the demands of the industry have created new challenges. The paper describes these issues, outlines potential solutions and discusses the future of repair technologies in terms of the far reaching influence it is sure to have in design, manufacturing, maintenance management and life extension. Progress in Business Trends.Business approaches to repair and maintenance have also gone through considerable change with the introduction of ""Power by the Hour"" and other similar arrangements between the companies responsible for engine overhaul and the end-users. Program Based Logistics (PBL) is yet another innovation to provide a win-win situation for the repair service provider and the end user. This paper traces the development of these business initiatives and highlights successful applications. Progress in Repair Certification, Regulatory Issues.Understanding of the issues surrounding certification of repairs has also evolved with time and regulatory issues have been clarified considerably. Procedures for analysis and testing are much clearer and ""Check Lists"" are being drafted for certifying repairs on various engine components. The PMA phenomenon has added yet another dimension to the issues regarding certification and these are discussed as well."

In 1978, the Outotec direct to blister flash (DBF) smelting process was commercialized with the commissioning of the Glogow 2 smelting facility in Poland. Since then four further DBF facilities have been constructed, two at Olympic Dam, one in Zambia and most recently one at Glogow 1 in Poland. The DBF smelting process differs considerably from conventional smelting process in both chemistry and unit operations, presenting opportunities for flowsheet capital and operating cost savings particularly when the concentrate copper grade is high. WorleyParsons has amassed considerable expertise in the Direct to Blister process and in this paper the process is compared to the modern two stage Double Flash process. The processes are modeled, and the key operating parameters, consumables and production metrics are directly compared. Subsequent flowsheets, key equipment lists and capital costs are also presented for comparison and discussion. The results show the range of concentrates which are most economically treated by the DBF process relative to those best treated in conventional processes along with those concentrates which could be treated by either process. INTRODUCTION The Outotec Direct to Blister (DBF) process was developed and installed at Glogow in 1978 (Czernecki et al., 2006). Currently there are a total of five DBFs built on three sites: Glogow No.2, Olympic Dam No.1, Olympic Dam No.2, KCM Zambia and Glogow No.1, being the most recently constructed. The DBF process was the first flash furnace process to produce blister copper and paved the way for the subsequent development of the flash converter and other continuous converting processes. Today four flash converters are in operation taking the total number of flash furnaces producing blister copper to eight. In all DBF operations it is the unique ore and concentrate composition which made selection of the DBF process the most attractive. In all cases, the concentrate is relatively high in copper but low in iron because chalcopyrite is not the major constituent. When considering smelting options for high copper, low iron concentrates a key question is then often asked, “At what point does it become economic to switch from two stage smelting and converting process to the DBF process?”

Mining induced ground movement and/or stress redistribution could cause ground instability issues. This is particularly true when the extraction of large stopes is done with one or two large production blasts. Often enough, it is the nearby mine development like haulage drifts and cross cuts that are influenced the most by production blasts. Proper and timely mitigation of ground control issues due to stress redistribution is required. This is usually done by drift rehabilitation involving the installation of secondary support system in the affected areas of the mine development which include; slashing, wire mesh, and in some cases the use of shotcrete liners. It is imperative that such rehabilitation be implemented to the mine infrastructure in a timely manner in order to avoid aggravated ground control problems and production delays. If the real time performance of the support system is captured, it would be possible to determine the timing for rehabilitation job. Birchtree Mine in Thompson, at the Vale Manitoba Operation, has begun mining the 84 Deep Orebody. One of the identified risks is the stability of the crusher room under mining induced stress redistribution. It is proposed to use the U-Cell technology to monitor the primary support system performance (rebar bolts and extension bolts) and monitor the real time performances of the bolt axial loads. The U-Cell technology is a 7-inch long, coupler load cell that is screwed onto the threaded portion of a rock bolt prior to installation. Rehabilitation in the vicinity of the crusher area where U-Cells are installed is recommended when the bolts have reached 70% of their yielding capacity. Catastrophic ground failure can be avoided by adding secondary support in a timely fashion. This paper presents a case study at Birchtree Mine in Thompson Manitoba, where the performance of primary ground support system is monitored and recorded during production.

The Kemess Mine tailings impoundment is retained behind an earthfill and rockfill dam that, when complete, will measure about 140 m in height with a crest length in excess of 1 km. Due to weak foundation conditions, the dam must be raised at a very flat downstream slope approaching 7H:1V. This requires an enormous volume of fill to construct the downstream shell of the dam, which has a low permeability clayey till core and is raised via the centerline construction method. For the initial years of annual dam raising, from 1996 through 2002, the downstream shell of the dam was constructed with non acid generating waste rock from the open pit, 7 km distant and requiring an uphill haul with obvious cost implications. To reduce costs, and to reduce waste haulage constraints on mining schedules, feasibility studies were initiated for raising of the downstream shell using cycloned tailings sand as opposed to open pit waste. This required inclusion of flotation cells for removal of residual sulphides from the tailings to produce the non acid generating product mandated for the downstream shell of the dam. These studies were positive, and cycloned sand construction was initiated in December of 2002. This paper describes the experience gained with cycloned sand construction for the dam. Unique aspects include environmental controls given the sulphide-bearing ores, preparation of the existing shell of the dam for subsequent placement of hydraulically placed cycloned tailings sand, on-dam settling ponds, water management issues, reclamation of the sand dam for erosion control commensurate with the wet climate, and use of the system to construct an above-water beach of non acid generating tailings to increase the closure security of the structure. A particularly unique aspect of the Kemess experience is hydraulic fill operations extending throughout the coldest winter months, as compared to other operations where such placement has traditionally been considered non-viable through the winter months

This paper studies two methods that account for risks associated with gold mining projects such as mineral risks and country risks. The first method is sensitivity analysis, which investigates the effects of a change in any economic parameter such as operating cost, capital investment, gold price or taxes on the viability of the project. The second method is Monte Carlo Simulation technique, which takes into consideration the simultaneous random variation of the economic parameters on the project's viability. An automated simulation cash flow model has been developed as part of this paper. Sensitivity analysis and the simulation model have been used to investigate the economic viability of the Dokrupe Gold Project (DGP) serving as a test case. It is concluded that, the Monte Carlo Simulation technique gives a more realistic judgement of the economic viability of gold mining projects.

We also stand today looking back at the role CIM has played in events that we have been partners in organizing outside Canada; and for a long time CIM has provided insights into what is going on in the rest of the mining world by inviting authors and by featuring topics from around the globe.Today, Canada is still a leader in the mining industry. Canadian mining companies are involved in exploration and operations around the world. Canadian operations serve a good portion of the global demand of many metals and minerals, recently adding diamonds to the slate. "Agnico Eagle LaRonde produces over 300,000 ounces of gold annually, along with silver, zinc and copper by-products. The LaRonde plant consists of a conventional SAG and Ball mill circuit, followed by flotation. Load management is imperative for maintaining stability in grind size and ensuring consistency of the flotation feed. In flotation, the mass pull profiles of the cells and reagent dosage rates need to be managed to maximize recovery, while maintaining product quality. This is achieved by controlling the air, level and reagent addition set-points across the circuit. However, disturbances such as feed size distribution, ore hardness and mineralogy make it challenging to maintain efficient control using traditional control techniques. LaRonde therefore worked to develop a progressive control strategy, targeting stability and optimization. This started with a year-long instrumentation upgrade campaign, focusing on optimizing the performance and reliability of plant-wide instrumentation. The process was then optimized, leveraging AwaRE advanced controllers running in closed loop with PARC modules embedded within the PLC. The installation of 8 PFC cameras in flotation changed the flotation operation from a level and air control based strategy, to one that controls mass pull. This new control philosophy has allowed the plant to effectively manage mill load, improving grind size and providing increased throughput with better flotation performance.INTRODUCTION Background Since 2015, Agnico Eagle LaRonde has been conducting an optimization campaign to maximise the performance of plant assets leveraging instrumentation and control. The grinding and copper flotation circuits were identified as the areas having the greatest opportunities and value proposition for advanced control. A disciplined approach was followed to design and implement a progressive control solution to achieve operational excellence."

Abstract This paper deals with the application of the cyanide process to recover gold from a pyrite concentrate produced by means of differential flotation. This concentrate before cyanidation contains from 0.09 oz. to 0.14 oz. gold per ton, of which only about 60 per cent is recoverable. The rest is so fine that it remains interlocked in the pyrite and therefore is not acted on by the cyanide. The concentrate also contains about 15 per cent pyrrhotite and 0.4 per cent chalcopyrite, both of which are cyanicides. The cyanicidal effect of the pyrrhotite is inhibited by preacracing the pulp with lime, and maintaining a high lime alkalinity during cyanidation. The effect of the chalcopyrice is reduced as far as possible by removing those particles which are free by means of a further flotation step immediately prior to cyanidation. This involves the flotation of some very fine material. After nullifying as far as possible these two cyanicides, the concentrate is cyanided directly, i.e., without being roasted. This leaves the pyrite available for subsequent sale as a source of sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid, and the entire residue of the cyamde plant, amounting to about 500 tons per day, 1s now being disposed of in this way. Prior to deciding on direct cyanidation, a number of laboratory roasting tests were made. These showed chat, 1f proper control were exercised, a better recovery of gold could be effected from the roasted product than by the direct method of treatment. The tests also showed that the capital cost o the plant would be much higher than that needed for the procedure adopted. The possibility of subsequently selling the pyrite for its sulphur content would also have been eliminated. Introduction A previous paper has described in considerable detail the application of the flotation process to improve gold recovery from Noranda's milling ore, and in so doing has covered the production of an auriferous pyrite concentrate. The present paper deals with the recovery of gold by cyanidation from that concentrate. This gold, though intimately associated with the pyrite, can, for metallurgical purposes, be considered as all occuring in the native state.

"Zinc metal is primarily produced by electrowinning from sulfate solution. Zinc electrowinning is very sensitive to impurities such as Co and Ni. These impurities have to be removed to produce high-quality zinc and maintain a high zinc current efficiency. Zinc dusts are used to remove these impurities by cementation. However cobalt cementation is extremely slow and it is typically activated by the addition of Cu and Sb. Even with the use of Cu-Sb activation, cobalt is still difficult to remove. The zinc dust used for cobalt cementation is negligible compared to that consumed for hydrogen evolution. In some plants up to 6-7% of electrolytic zinc is used for cementation. This is a great waste of energy. Cu-Sb activation is not well understood. The objective of this study was to further understand the Cu-Sb activation and then find a way to reduce hydrogen evolution and promote cobalt cementation. The investigation reveals how hydrogen evolution (or zinc dissolution) and cobalt cementation and re-dissolution change with temperature, zinc dust dosage, the concentrations of copper and antimony and time. In the Cu-Sb activation, copper is deposited on a zinc particle to produce a porous shell. The zinc particle as an anode dissolves while the shell as a cathode provides a place where cobalt cementation and hydrogen evolution occur and they are catalyzed by antimony. A certain level of antimony (around 0.1 mg/L) is a key to maintain the catalytic effect of the shell. At a higher antimony concentration, cobalt cementation is accelerated slightly while hydrogen evolution is increased greatly. When a zinc particle dissolves to a certain degree, cobalt loses its cathodic protection and starts to re-dissolve. The change in cobalt concentration is determined by the rates of cobalt cementation and re-dissolution. The operation conditions can be optimized to maximize the cobalt removal and minimize the zinc dust dosage.INTRODUCTIONMost of the world’s zinc metal is produced by electrowinning from sulfate media. Many impurities such as iron, copper, cobalt and nickel are co-extracted into solution with zinc. Iron, mercury, indium, lead and tin are removed by co-precipitation as hydroxides. Copper, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, arsenic and germanium are partially co-precipitated with iron while cadmium, magnesium and chloride remain in solution. Cobalt, copper, cadmium, nickel and etc. are subsequently removed by cementation with zinc dust to achieve an acceptable current efficiency and high purity metal product for the economical production of zinc. One of the most prospective undeveloped greenstone belts in Canada, the Hope Bay greenstone belt extends over 80km in a north-south direction and is between 7 and 20km wide. The belt lies on the arctic coast and comprises mafic meta-volcanic and meta-sedimentary rocks that are bounded by Archean granite intrusives and gneisses. The greenstone package has been deformed during multiple events and is transected by major northsouth trending shear zones that appear to exert a significant control on the localization of mineralization. The Hope Bay belt contains a number of significant gold deposits hosted in a typical Archean greenstone belt and which occur in several geologic settings, including shear-hosted, lode-style and breccia-associated. Combined, the deposits host a measured and indicated resource of 1.6 million oz of gold averaging 15.7 g/t plus an inferred resource of 2.7 million oz of gold averaging 12.3 g/t. All deposits remain open to expansion. Exploration in the period 2000-2002 by Miramar includes more than 110,000m of drilling to more fully define the nature of the known deposits, while regional exploration has focused on identifying and evaluating new targets. In carrying out its programs, Miramar uses a number of techniques to improve its chances of exploration success. Activity in 2003 includes 43,000m of drilling focused on expanding resources in the Madrid area, testing the Boston deposit at depth and continuing the hunt for more discoveries. Meanwhile Miramar is advancing one of the deposits towards a production decision, based on a low capital, high return development scenario.

Dans le but de voir si une région comme la Gaspésie, qui a subi la derniere glaciation , se prête avantageusement à la méthode de prospection alluvionnaire, environ 800 concentrés de minéraux lourds furent prélevés dans les districts électoraux de Matane et de Gaspé-Nord. Les différentes phases minérales présentes dans les concentrés ont été examinées à la loupe binoculaire. Afin de mieux valoriser ce type d'inforrnat ion, nous avons été arnenés à expérimenter et à mettre en oeuvre des techniques multivariables adaptées au traltement d'une information semi-quantitative en utilisant le principe d'un codage logique préalable. La structuration des résultats de la Gaspésie a conduit à l'élaboration de cartes de synthèse qui constituent un support nécessaire à l'interprétatlon des répartitions plus ponctuelles des minéraux "utiles" sur le plan de la recherche minière.

As a part of a large research and development program in Finland, a system calibration for an UAV measurement method having practical experiments in a Jorvas Railway Yard design and construction project. The Railway yard construction are was measured using an UAV measurement device by Smartplanes (Smartone) and using some reference points measured by a GNSS device. The measured data was cleaned, combined and adjusted through Least Squares Optimization using the software developed by a Finnish company Pieneering Oy. As references, two different laser scans as well as total station surveys were used. For applicability evaluation, the accuracy of measurement, the reliability of measurement, and the economy of measurement were used. Based on the comparisons, the achieved precision of the UAV measurement was high, instead the accuracy of measurement was not sufficient in this case. The principle of this photogrammetric measurement includes a lot of redundant observations making it possible to achieve a high level of reliability. The economy in this Railway Yard Design project was not able to achieve.

"The BHP Diamonds Inc. and Blackwater Group (Dia Met Minerals Ltd., Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson) joint venture began production at Canada=s first diamond mine during the last quarter of 1998.Construction of the processing plant began in mid 1997. During the 1998 winter season, the heavy process plant equipment was delivered to the Ekati site, 300 km NE of Yellowknife, by the ice road. Towards mid 1998 the construction activities were complete and commissioning began. The mine officially opened in October 1998.Initial production of 9000 tpd kimberlite will be from the Panda pipe grading 1.09 ct/t at an average value of US$13O/ct.Processing starts with a gyratory crusher reducing the ROM kimberlite to 90% passing 15Omm before further reduction to minus 75mm in a WaterFlush crusher. The crusher product discharges into a 4m diameter x 7m long primary scrubber. After screening, the minus 75 +1 mm kimberlite is conveyed to a 250 ft feed bin ahead of the 1.7 m diameter x 1.1 m wide high pressure grinding roll. The HPGR produces 50% minus lmm in a single pass, the compacted flake product is dis-agglomerated in a secondary scrubber. The scrubber product is screened into a minus 25 +lmm heavy medium separation plant feed and conveyed to a 375t HMS feed bin ahead of two 150 HMS modules. Milled 270D ferrosilicon at a slurry density of 2.6 g/cc and HMS feed are pumped to three 420mm diameter cyclones. Heavy mineral concentrates, approximately 1 % of the plant headfeed, are pneumatically transported to the Recovery plant for final diamond recovery using wet high intensity magnetic separators and high intensity (attrition) milling prior to three stages of x-ray recovery. At full production, Ekati will produce approximately 2 kg/day of diamonds.This paper details the later commissioning phase and the first three months Oof operational activities during the build up to full production at the Ekati processing plant."

"The property of McWatters Gold Mines, Limited, is in the east-central part of Rouyn township and about 6 miles east-southeast of the town of Rouyn. It includes 35 claims, the group of 5, staked originally, and 30 claims acquired in later years. The Rouyn-Val d'Or road and the Noranda Senneterre branch of the Canadian National railway both pass within a few hundred feet of the mine.The group of claims in which the mine occurs was first staked in 1922, but gold was not discovered until August 1932 when a schistose zone including veins of quartz carrying considerable free gold was laid bare in a stripped area in the northeastern part of claim R.11604. Diamond drilling undertaken in 1932, and continued into 1933, shouwd that the gold extended for at least 1,000 feet along the strike. A 3-compartment shaft was sunk to 418 feet in 1933. A mill having a capacity of 50 tons a day was constructed in 1934, and enlarged to 150 tons in 1935. Production began in 1934 and continued without interruption to June 1944. Except for a few diamond drill holes, there have been no operations on the property since that time. The maximum depth of the mine workings is 1,50) feet. A total of 368,013 tons of ore having a value of $3,946,752 and an average grade of $11.04 was mined during the years of operation.GEOLOGYThe ore mined from the property occurred within the south limb of an eastward plunging syncline of volcanics and sediments cut off on the north by the Cadillac-Bouzan Lake fault. Because the rock formations within the syncline have been severed from those outside with which they were originally continuous, their correlation is based almost wholly on lithological similarity. They include an irregular middle zone of conglomerate and greywacke underlain by north and south bands of andesite agglomerate and andesite tuff, in which lenticular bands of pillowed andesite are included."

IT SEEMS particularly appropriate that, in celebrating its Diamond Anniversary, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metalturgy chose our Province of British Columbia as its locale in this, our own Centennial year. I am sure your organization is justifiably proud of its achievements and growth over the period of its sixty years, and we, for our part, are justifiably proud of our growth over our first one hundred years. With your kind indulgence I pro-pose to talk to you today about our industrial growth, or, to put it an-other way, to highlight, historically, our progress in industrial development over the past one hundred years, and to take the liberty of speculating on what we may reasonably look forward to over the next few years. I am sure, Mr. Chairman, that some may have questioned the appropriateness of a talk on the industrial development of British Columbia to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. However, strangely enough, we in British Columbia owe our origin, constitution-ally and industrially, to the mining industry.
