Slurry flow, including flow through the charge, through the discharge grates, along the pulp lifters and its discharge from the mill is an important contributor to the efficiency of the grinding process within a SAG mill. Poor transport of finer ground material can adversely affect grinding leading to excess energy consumption and over-grinding of fine material. This paper extends a 1-way coupled DEM-SPH method to three dimensions and applies it to a 1.8 m diameter by 0.6 m long AG/SAG pilot mill. This provides detailed information on the internal flow of slurry within a SAG mill, including the prediction of dry regions and of slurry pooling. Full 3D analysis also allows the pulp flow patterns into and out of the mill via pulp lifter chamber to be investigated.

"Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (500 µm) materials with very high throughputs.. The technology has been also successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, and potash. TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEWThe ST separator utilizes electrical charge differences between materials produced by surface contact or triboelectric charging. When two materials are in contact, material with a higher affinity for electrons gains electrons and thus charges negative, while material with lower electron affinity charges positive. This contact exchange of charge is universally observed for all materials, at times causing electrostatic nuisances that are a problem in some industries. Electron affinity is dependent on the chemical composition of the particle surface and will result in substantial differential charging of materials in a mixture of discrete particles of different composition.In the ST separator (Figures 1 and 2), material is fed into the thin gap 0.9 – 1.5 cm (0.35 -0.6 in.) between two parallel planar electrodes. The particles are triboelectrically charged by interparticle contact. For example, in the case of coal combustion fly ash, a mixture of carbon particles and mineral particles, the positively charged carbon and the negatively charged mineral are attracted to opposite electrodes. The particles are then swept up by a continuous moving open-mesh belt and conveyed in opposite directions. The belt moves the particles adjacent to each electrode toward opposite ends of the separator. The electric field need only move the particles a tiny fraction of a centimeter to move a particle from a left-moving to a right-moving stream. The counter current flow of the separating particles and continual triboelectric charging by carbon-mineral collisions provides for a multistage separation and results in excellent purity and recovery in a single-pass unit. The high belt speed also enables very high throughputs, up to 40 tonnes per hour on a single separator. By controlling various process parameters, such as belt speed, feed point, electrode gap and feed rate, the ST process produces low carbon fly ash at carbon contents of 2 % ± 0.5% from feed fly ashes ranging in carbon from 4% to over 30%."

"The selective separation of palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh) from a hydrochloric acid solution by solvent extraction was investigated using amide-type extractants, i.e., N,N,N’,N’-tetra-n-octyl-thiodiglycolamide (TDGA) and N-n-hexyl-bis(N-methyl-N-n-octyl-ethylamide) amine (BisAA). The separation experiments employed two separation schemes: (1) extraction of Pd with TDGA and that of Rh and Pt with BisAA; and (2) extraction of Rh, Pd, and Pt with BisAA. Separation scheme 1 achieved the highly selective separation of each metal. For separation scheme 2, Rh can be recovered prior to Pd and Pt, despite having a lower selectivity for Pd/Pt than separation scheme 1. INTRODUCTIONThe recent increase in the use of platinum group metals (PGMs) in industry (especially auto catalysts containing palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh)) has lead to their increasing waste; therefore, improvements in the recovery techniques for PGM have received significant attention. In metal refineries, PGMs are mainly separated and purified by solvent extraction (Cox, 2004). The extraction process used in INCO’s Acton precious metal refinery is one of the most famous commercial processes and is utilized worldwide. In this process, silver is first removed as a residue (AgCl), and then gold, Pd and Pt are extracted from hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions using dibutylcarbitol (DBC), dialkylsulfide (DAS), and tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP), respectively. Finally, Rh remains in the raffinate (Barns & Edwards, 1982).The development of a successful solvent extraction process depends on the choice of the appropriate extractants. We have studied the extraction of PGM using N,N-disubstituted amide compounds (Narita, Tanaka, Morisaku, & Abe, 2004; Narita, Tanaka, Morisaku, & Tamura, 2006; Narita, Tanaka, & Morisaku, 2008a, 2008b). They are relatively stable against acids, and their metal extractability can be improved by changing the side chain length and/or introducing additional donor atoms like sulfur and nitrogen. We have recently found that thiodiglycolamide and an amide-containing tertiary amine have good extractabilities for Pd and Rh, respectively."

"This document compares the systems of coal classification described under ASTM standards used in Canada to GB standards used in China. A preliminary connection of metallurgical coal classes was set up between the two classifications. In GB classification system, there are nine metallurgical coal groups, namely PS, SM, JM, FM, ½ ZN, RN, 1/3 JM, and QM used in coal blending for coke production. PS coal is almost equivalent to the Low Volatile Bituminous coal; SM, JM, and FM coal groups fall into Low to Medium Volatile Bituminous range; ½ ZN, RN, 1/3 JM, and QM are equivalent to bituminous coal with medium to high volatile matters; QF contains higher volatile bituminous coal compared with High Volatile Bituminous coal. The caking properties commonly used in respective country are also compared in this document. These properties include free swelling index (FSI) and maximum fluidity used in Canada, as well as caking index (GR.I.), and the maximum plastic layer thickness (Y) mainly employed in China. It has been observed that the log of the maximum fluidity has a stronger correlation with the caking index than the Y values. Metallurgical coal processing strategy and typical coking coal product qualities are briefly discussed in the last section of this paper. Currently there is a trend to use heavy medium cyclone in both countries. In Canada the conventional two-product cyclone technology is the preferred practice; whereas in China the three-product heavy medium cyclone arrangement is widely used.INTRODUCTION Coal can be simply classified by applications into two categories: i) thermal coal used to provide heat energy in combustion, and ii) metallurgical coal which is converted to coke, in a carbonization process, and used mainly in the iron and steel industry. Metallurgical coal contains even higher heating values than thermal coal. In addition, it presents unique plastic properties during carbonization which in turn produces a porous solid, high in carbon referred to as coke. Coke is one of the most important raw materials in the iron and steel industry."

"Rare earth elements (REE) are essential and unique components of many high-technology products without which functioning of modern society would be greatly impaired. Commercial deposits of REE are limited to a few geographical locations. Largely untapped sources of REE are available in endof- life (EOL) magnets, rechargeable batteries, and electronics. Presently, < 1% of REE in EOL wastes is recycled. Conversion of EOL wastes to liquid streams allows use of IBC’s Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) process to selectively recover, separate, and purify target REE and associated metals at g/L to mg/L or lower concentration levels. The MRT process together with its applications to separations of REE and associated metals in recycling as well as in mining are described. Economic and environmental advantages of MRT are presented. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) include the lanthanide series (La-Lu), Y, and Sc. These elements are not rare, but concentrated minable deposits are scarce (Cordier 2012; Haxel, Hedrick, & Orris, 2002). Over 95 % of the world’s supply of REE is controlled by China (Hanson, 2011a) where they are mined, processed, and the pure elements incorporated into a growing number of consumer and military products. The consumer products are marketed worldwide. Since REE are vitally important in consumer and military products, this situation has caused other nations to scramble to develop the capability to produce their own supply (Cordier, 2012).In the U. S., Molycorp has reopened the Mountain Pass REE mine in California and production has begun (Goldenberg, 2010). Development of a reliable internal source of REE is of high national priority in the U.S. (Hanson, 2011b; Hess, 2012: “Obama Announces”, 2012). These elements have in recent decades been incorporated into new consumer and military products that are essential to our economy and defense. These products range from wind turbines, high performance magnets, hybrid car rechargeable batteries, energy efficient lighting electronics, flat screen televisions, and smart phones to advanced weapons systems (Haxel et al., 2002; Levkowitz & Beauchamp-Mustafaga, 2010)."

Ring motors (gearless) are the preferred drives for large mills even though the power transmitted through a gear drive is expected to near 11,000 kW per pinion in the near future.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is derived from a document that compiles autogenous and semi-autogenous mill installations worldwide. The list is maintained by Stuart M. Jones, Jr. (author), and is included in the appendix. This list has been the inspiration for similar papers in the past several SAG Conferences. "Development of a process for the treatment of a nickel copper matte rich in the minerals heazlewoodite, chalcocite and bornite has demonstrated significant base metal recoveries and metal separation efficiencies. The determination of chemical and mineralogical changes occurring in the individual leaching stages in laboratory experiments has enabled a better understanding of the complex leaching chemistry. The chemistry and mineralogy of the piloting and laboratory processes are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe nickel-copper sulfide ores of the South African Bushveld Complex are among the most important Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores, and contain the world’s largest reserves of platinum. The treatment used in the recovery of PGMs from these ores includes three types of processes, namely ore concentration using physical techniques such as flotation and gravity separation, concentration by pyrometallurgical means, hydrometallurgical extraction of the base metals followed by the PGMs. Following milling of the ore, flotation involves the separation of high value minerals from gangue by taking advantage of the differences in their hydrophobicity. These differences are generally maximized through the use of a surfactant or wetting agent. Concentrates are then thermally treated and melted which brings about physical and chemical changes that enable the recovery of base metals and PGMs. The main aim of the smelting and converting process is to separate and eliminate the valuable metals from the bulk of the unwanted gangue and essentially all of the iron and to concentrate the metal VALUES (into a high grade converter matte. The matte can be further enriched by magnetic separation, producing a PGM-rich magnetic fraction and a base metal-rich non-magnetic fraction. The magnetic fraction is treated by hydrometallurgical processes to produce a PGM concentrate which is further refined to separate and purify the individual metals. The non-magnetic fraction is treated to produce marketable metal VALUES (such as nickel, copper, cobalt and to a lesser extent PGMs. The principal objective of any hydrometallurgical extractive process is to leach the desired elements selectively into an aqueous phase so as to separate them from the bulk of the material. "As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick Gold’s autoclaves / CIL facility at Goldstrike, blanking the preg robbing native carbon in the process solids with hard (m.p. 55 - 60 º C) paraffin wax was studied, specifically in relation to pressure oxidation. The improvement in CIL gold extraction was found to depend on the wax addition point, with hot, dry contacting of the ore in the presence of wax - prior to POX - yielding the largest, most consistent improvement in gold extraction.INTRODUCTIONDouble refractory gold ores present two barriers to gold extraction. The first is generally a physical barrier: the gold is encapsulated or dispersed in a matrix which is impervious to the gold lixiviant. In most cases, including Carlin Trend, NV, deposits, this involves a pyrite or arsenopyrite matrix, although minor gold may also be dispersed in competent silica (quartz) or iron oxides. Gold can be rendered accessible by oxidative destruction of such sulphide matrices. At Goldstrike this is practised by roasting and autoclave oxidation (Thomas, 1994). It is the latter route to which this paper refers.The second barrier refers to the actual gold recovery. Gold may be extracted from the pressure oxidized solids with cyanide, forming a gold cyanide complex. One characteristic of this complex is that it adsorbs on graphitic surfaces. This is taken advantage of on a large scale by gold millers, who use manmade activated, i.e., graphitized carbon particles to remove the gold from solution during leaching: the Carbon-In-Leach, or CIL process. The gold cyanide bearing carbon particles are larger than the ore solids and can be separately recovered by screening. Goldstrike uses the CIL technology to recover gold. The second barrier becomes problematic when the ore naturally contains graphitic orcarbonaceous material, hereafter referred to as native carbon (versus the man-made activated carbon). This material may also adsorb gold cyanide in competition with the activated carbon. Since the native carbon is ground with the ore it is much smaller than the activated carbon. Any competition between the two carbons may produce a loss of gold from the pregnant leach liquor to the process tailings. This phenomenon is called “preg robbing”. Goldstrike ores come from the Carlin trend, which is known for the occurrence of native carbon (Adams & Burger, 1998; Schmitz, Duyvesteyn, Johnson, Enloe & McMullen, 2001; Tretbar, 2004)."

The effect of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), as a preceding stage to a conventional ball mill circuit at PT Freeport Indonesia?s C1/C2 concentrators, has been studied in terms of downstream grinding efficiency and circuit performance. When milling the product from the HPGR, mill capacity increased by 21% for the same product grind size, when compared to processing similar ore from a conventional crushing circuit. This achievement is a result of several reasons, among them: reduction in feed size (F80), fines generation beyond the proportional reduction in F80, reduction in ore hardness induced by HPGR comminution mechanism, optimization of the recycle system of the HPGR and ball string optimization in the ball mill circuit given the new feed to the mill.

This paper presents a review of plant layout considerations incorporated into recent designs of SAG/Ball mill circuits for two medium sized concentrators. The plant layouts presented and the design concepts discussed, relate to smaller SAG circuits, but can equally apply to larger milling circuits. Included are design concepts and ideas introduced by the various project teams, and the focus is on the primary factors of any layout design which are safety, constructability, operability, and capital cost.

The challenge of "ore bodies getting steadily harder and lower in grade" was brought to light during the first oil crisis in the 70&apos;s. Shortly afterwards, HPGRs appeared on the scene with the promise of saving energy. This combined with developments in wear protection for the rolls ushered in a period of trade-off studies that considered the HPGR as an option to improve project economics or to even make projects feasible at all. Since then, applications of HPGRs at Cerro Verde (Freeport), PTFI Grasberg (Freeport), Mogalakwena (Anglo Platinum), Tarkwa (Goldfields), Boddington (Newmont), Penasquito (Goldcorp), and others have contributed to the creation of a formidable basket of operating experience. Collected through years of successful operation, this information has been used to validate design criteria, scale-up factors and establishing a clearer picture of what "to do" and what "not to do". This paper compares results from various mining operations using HPGRs in their processing plants. Some of the lessons learnt in different operating environments are reviewed in order to support proper implementation and operation of HPGR&apos;s. Some of the development programs that have been initiated to improve wear life of the tyres and to reduce overall operating costs are reviewed. It is timely to summarize today?s experience and analyse its implications for existing and new operations.

It is well-known that the particle breakage mode that occurs in a semi-autogenous mill is significantly different from that which occurs in a ball mill, enough so to warrant very different lab scale breakage tests and scale-up models. This phenomenon, at the plant scale, leads to changing process constraints depending on the particular properties of the ore. For example, hard or coarse ores might bottleneck the SAG/AG mill throughput, while the ball mills might constrain throughput when milling soft or fine ores. Because the power draw of a ball mill is fairly constant compared to that of a SAG/AG mill, periods of SAG/AG mill bottlenecks lead to increased ball mill circuit specific energy consumption and a finer grinding circuit product size, which together constitute a loss of efficiency of the overall process. Because HPGR circuit throughput is less sensitive to changes in ore hardness, this situation is less common or severe in those circuits. Furthermore, the ball mills are somewhat decoupled from the upstream crushing circuits through the use of surge bins, which also helps to mitigate this effect. As a result, ore hardness variability constitutes a significant cost penalty that should be applied to SAG mill/ball mill/pebble crusher SABC circuits when evaluating the relative economics of different grinding circuit configurations. Nevertheless, the issue is by-and-large ignored, because most current HPGR trade-off studies are based on averaged ore hardness parameters. This paper provides an estimate of the magnitude of this penalty for a typical operation by using Monte Carlo simulation methods and plant data from Freeport-McMoRan?s autogenous, semi-autogenous, and HPGR-based comminution circuits. A case study from an in-house 96K t/d sulphide project is presented to illustrate the concept. It was found that by including variability effects, the trade-off NPV of the HPGR circuit over that of the SAG mill circuit increases to $84 million from negative $33 million, effectively reversing the original decision of selecting a SAG mill circuit for the fixed hardness case.

"The leaching of sulphide minerals generates a significant amount of energy. There are three systems that might be used to remove this energy. These are: cooling coils, quench water, and flash recycle. Flash recycle is the recycling of slurry from the autoclave to the feed tank. Heat is removed in this arrangement when the slurry at elevated temperature and pressure is flashed to atmosphere, releasing steam. The slurry is returned to the autoclave at lower temperature, resulting in cooling. The cooling is directly proportional to the steam released from the recycled slurry. Design equations and results for the flash recycle system are presented. A fourth proposal for removing heat is to recycle slurry from the back of the autoclave. These four alternatives not only remove the heat, but also have an effect on the leaching efficiency. Amongst the four alternatives, design calculations indicate that the flash recycle option is the optimal solution in terms of leaching efficiency and heat removal, and recycling product from the back of the autoclave is the worst. In spite of its efficiency in terms of heat removal and leaching, the implementation of the flash recycle system is limited to a few operations in the platinum industry.INTRODUCTIONIn considering ways to improve leaching operations, focus is placed on the chemistry, on the kinetics, the agitation and perhaps even on the gas mass transfer conditions. In 2009 Newmont Mining Corporation’s annual global spend on grinding media reached $94M USD, having doubled in the five years since 2004. The major contributing factor to the spend escalation during this period was unit consumable price, with total media consumption also rising as a function of annual ore tonnes milled. In an effort to better understand and manage the growth of this expenditure a significant supply chain management program was implemented. This was complemented by a series of technical initiatives focussed on grinding media specifications, quality management and the prediction of grinding media wear rate as a function of physical ore characteristics. This paper discusses the methodology and outcomes of these activities.

"The rare earth elements (REE) are nowadays mainly used for permanent magnets, catalysts, hydrogen storage alloys in rechargeable batteries, for glasses, ceramics, and polishing agents. Other important areas of application are phosphors in different types of lamps (fluorescent tubes, energy-saving lamps, etc.). These lamps are often collected and treated at their end of life by disintegration and sorting. However, the obtained fine fractions comprise not only REE-containing phosphors but also small amounts of mercury and are therefore disposed till today in special landfills. Due to the enormous price increase of the rare earths during the last two years, a lot of activities started for extracting these elements from secondary resources such as for example phosphors. All recycling concepts for this task mainly work with hydrometallurgical methods. The large number of different compounds in phosphors with sometimes very different behaviors with respect to their solubility in aqueous phases forms a major challenge to achieve good yields as well as acceptable purities of the produced rare earth concentrates by a process with a reasonable number of operation steps. Therefore, this paper gives at first a brief overview about the compounds, used as phosphors and about existing concepts or investigations. It further describes our own process design and the results, obtained on laboratory scale. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earth elements (REE) have a central position in the industrialised world despite their marginal production volume in comparison to common metals such as aluminium, copper, zinc etc., because they are essential for many applications. They often cannot be substituted without a considerable loss on functionality and quality. This group of metals comprise the lanthanoids (f–block elements, lanthanum–lutetium) as well as scandium and yttrium.The estimated world mine production of REE amounted to 133,000 t rare earth oxide equivalent in 2010, whereat China accounted for 130,000 t or 98 % (Cordier, 2012). The European Union (EU-27) imported 23,013 t in 2008 to cover its demand. The figure 1 shows the fraction of the European member states in terms of the total imports of rare earth compounds from outside the EU-27 (Schüler, Buchert, Liu, Dittrich, & Merz, 2011)."

"Newmont Ghana Gold Limited’s Ahafo operation have been working with Metso Process Technology & Innovation (PTI) since early 2009 to increase mill throughput from a combination of controlled blasting practices and optimised primary crusher and grinding circuit conditions. For such Mineto-Mill projects, PTI’s methodology is termed Process Integration & Optimisation (PIO).Ahafo operate a SAG mill, ball mill and pebble crusher (SABC) circuit that processes a range of primary ore of varying hardness from different pits which is blended with soft oxide material. The PTI study focussed on ball mill limited material from the Apensu open pit.Following a benchmarking study of all blasting, crushing and grinding practices in January 2009, PTI recommended changes in both blasting and crushing conditions in order to generate a finer feed size to the SAG mill. Additional operating changes in the grinding circuit were recommended.A series of trials were conducted in November 2009 where three blasts were fired using a different blast design (hole diameter and explosive type) in the same area of the Apensu pit as the benchmarked material in January 2009. Top and bottom benches (or flitches) from each blast were sent exclusively to the grinding circuit and the material was tracked using PTI’s SmartTag™ system.The results from the six trials showed a significant increase in primary ore throughput at a reduced blend of oxide material. Ahafo have since standardised on these modified blasting conditions for all Apensu ore zones and have been able to sustain higher throughput compared to historical performance on similar material.This paper summarises the phases of the PIO project, the changes made in operating practices and the outcomes of the blasting trials that validated the predicted increase in mill throughput."

"The work presented here is part of an ongoing project designed to develop predictive capabilities of the local mechanical properties, and thus, structural behaviour of a thin-walled high-pressure die-cast AM60B magnesium alloy component. This work focuses on developing correlations between process parameters and local microstructure. Numerical simulations of the die filling and solidification behaviour of the AM60B component were used to estimate local process parameters such as solidification rate, temperature gradient, filling velocity, etc. These estimated parameters were used to establish semiempirical correlations with measured VALUES (of the local microstructure measured in regions throughout the component of different solidification conditions. INTRODUCTIONHigh-pressure die-cast magnesium alloys are experiencing increasing use in structural automotive components. A strength-to-weight ratio comparable to steels and its ease of castability allow for these alloys to be utilized in such capacities as instrument panel beams, seat and door frames, and engine cradles, among others (Gjestland and Westengen, 2007). However, the current use of these alloys is limited due to variations in local mechanical properties. These local property variations restrict part designers to assume lower than actual properties, resulting in larger sections, thus diminishing the light-weighting advantages of magnesium alloys. If these local property variations could be predicted, part designers would be able to optimize die-cast magnesium alloy components and fully take advantage of the light-weighting capacity of these materials.The work presented here is part of an ongoing project aimed at developing predictive capabilities of the local mechanical properties, and bulk mechanical performance, from variations in local microstructure, and ultimately from local process parameters in die-cast magnesium alloys. This project, unique in its nature, is based upon the results determined from fifty sequentially cast AM60B magnesium alloy instrument panel beams provided by Meridian Lightweight Technologies (shown in Figure 1)."

"The rare earths industry started in Austria in 1887 by Carl Auer von Welsbach (1858-1929) Professor of Chemistry at the University of Vienna. The process was based on monazite sand transported from Brazil as shipping ballast free of charge. This made possible producing thorium, cerium, and other rare earths at a low cost, thus permitting the growth of the industry. However, once the Brazilian authorities realized the strategic importance of the sand, shipping was stopped. Brazil then started its own processing of the sand in 1949. The background for Auer’s work, the role of Robert Bunsen in Heidelberg, and the invention of the spectroscope will be presented. INTRODUCTIONHeidelberg on the Neckar (Figure 1) was the meeting place for chemistry students from all over Europe in the nineteenth century. Her university founded in 1386 had already a famous professor of chemistry and medecine in the Faculty of Medicine by the name Leopold Gmelin whose three - volume Handbuch der theoretischen Chemie appeared in 1817-1819, that became later a multi-volume monumental work. As successor to Gmelin came Robert Bunsen (Figure 2) in 1852 who made this university town the Mecca of chemistry students. One of his students, the English Henry Roscoe (1833-1915) who became later a distinguished professor in Manchester, described him as follows: ""As an investigator he was great, as a teacher he was greater, as a man and a friend he was greatest""."

"The technological development observed in recent years has stimulated the application of rare earth (RE) elements. Amongst their various applications it is well worth mentioning their use in electronics, superconductors, nuclear medicine, as well as in special inks - as those used in radar invisible airplanes. TV and computer monitor screens present as coating a powder containing some rare earth elements, mainly Europium and Yttrium. The recovery of the RE elements from electronic scrap is extremely important as the economic and environmental issues are concerned. This paper describes the study of the Eu and Y recovery from e-scraps. The first step of the process was the leaching of the powder obtained by manually scraping the inside surface of the screen. After the optimization of the leaching, the dissolution of Eu and Y was higher than 98 w/t% and a pregnant sulfuric liquor containing 11.9 g L-1 Y and 0.72 g L-1 Eu was obtained. The second step was the separation of the metals found in the liquor by the solvent extraction technique. The separation of Eu and Y was carried out in a counter current circuit compound of 3 extraction stages, 7 scrubbing stages and 15 stripping stages. DEHPA was used as the extractant, whereas a diluted sulfuric acid solution was applied as scrubbing agent and a hydrochloric acid solution at high concentration was used as the stripping agent.INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths (RE) are a moderately abundant group of 17 elements composed of lanthanides, scandium and yttrium. Amongst the RE, promethium (Pm) is extremely rare, however several of the RE elements are not very rare and occur dispersed in a variety of forms (Greenwood & Earnshaw, 1984; Tyler, 2004).The innumerable applications of the RE elements are based on their particular properties, mainly their spectroscopic and magnetic properties (Martins & Isolani, 2005). The technological development observed in recent years has stimulated the application of rare earth (RE) elements. They have been used in agriculture, electronics, superconductors, nuclear medicine, automobile industry, special inks – as those used in radar invisible airplanes, X-ray screens, high intensity mercury vapour light bulbs, neutron scintilators, charged-particle detectors and optical memory reading systems (Maestro & Huguenin, 1995; Nagaosa & Binghua, 1997; Sánchez et al., 1999)."

The Gibraltar Mine and Mill facility were commissioned in 1972 by Gibraltar Mines Ltd utilizing a flowsheet consisting of two stages of crushing followed by a rod mill / ball mill grinding circuit. During operations a number of opportunities were evaluated to expand the mill capacity; however, the economics of the day did not allow any of these projects to proceed. The mine continued to operate until late 1998 when it was shutdown and put on care and maintenance due to low commodity prices. Taseko Mines acquired Gibraltar in 1999 and in 2004, with the improvement in the metal markets, made the decision to restart operations. During the restart planning a number of opportunities for mill improvements and upgrades were identified and, after operations were successfully restarted, the decision was made to once again review expansion opportunities for Gibraltar. Taseko evaluated various expansion alternatives eventually deciding to install a SAG Mill, convert the existing rod mills to ball mills and distribute the SAG discharge to the resultant six 6 parallel ball mills. This paper discusses the design, implementation and commissioning of the SAG mill grinding circuit.
