Three principal features of the ore at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, tend to complicate concentration of the valuable minerals, these being:1. The ore occurs in three more or less separate bodies which vary in texture and mineral ratios. Mining of constant proportions of the three sections, or adequate blending of the ore, is not fully effective, and consequently the flotation section is subjected to feedof varying texture.2. The mineral association in the heavily pyritic ore is extremely intimate. Composite particles exist even at 20 micron sizeI, and probably finer.3. The copper content of the ore averages_about 0,6%, which is high enough to justify recovery of the chalcopyrite in a separate concentrate. A review of the metallurgical history of the mine shows that this feature has been the cause of the several major changes in flowsheet of the flotation section since the commencement of milling.METALLURGICAL HISTORYThe mine started production in January 1939, at the rate of 250 tons per day of sulphide ore, assaying 0·68% Cu, 6·52% Pb, 10·8% Zn, and about 1 dwt. Au and 2 oz. Ag per ton.

Mining of the Martha Hill epithermal gold deposit via open pit methods will excavate a pit to 15 m below sea level. Regular geotechnical evaluations of pit slopes have taken place. Details of the various components of these evaluations, including geological structure, material strength, and groundwater, are covered. Pitwall geological structures are represented clearly on pit floor grade control maps with the dominant sets being steeply dipping strike fractures. Cross cutting shears are common. Material strength is reflected by the oxidation status of the hydrothermally altered host rocks, with weaker material occurring in partially oxidised ground. Regional groundwater is generally high, particularly on the north-eastern side of the pit, where it has been little affected by de-watering. Geological structures appear to control the flow of groundwater in the proximity of pitwalls and require draining by the introduction of horizontal drains. An overview of pit slope design is given. Slopes are designed for overall slope stability, allowing for the occurrence of minor interbench failures.

The Energy Authority of NSW has wide powers and responsibilities conferred by its Act which are pertinent to the State's coal industry and its development into the next century. With respect to coal, the broad objective is to maximise the benefits to NSW and its people derived from the State's coal resources. The initial focus of the Authority's coal-related activities in the late 70's and early 80's was on petroleum substitutes from coal. Research was supported, especially on hydrogenation, and the Authority participated in the Joint Australia/Federal Republic of Germany coal-to-oil feasibility study. It also co-ordinated a State Government initiative to involve the private sector in examining the possible establishment of a synthetic fuels industry based on Hunter Valley coal. With a short-fall in world-wide petroleum supply now seen as less likely for some years, the Authority is looking also at ways of working towards the broad objective in the field of coal utilisation on both domestic and export markets. Areas of interest include possibilities for using washery rejects, means of making NSW coal more competitive as an energy source, use of coal-seam gas and new or special technologies for burning coal. The future is expected to see renewed interest in producing petroleum substitutes, and coal - as the State's major energy resource - is seen as a strong contender as a basis for such an industry. Developments in coal-based power generation are also expected to have an impact, with advanced technologies having a possible place here as well as Overseas.

The Grootegeluk coal beneficiation plant is situated near Ellisras in the Waterberg coal= field in the Transvaal, RSA. At this plant 15 million tons of coal bearing material per annum are beneficiated by means of two-stage heavy medium bath and cyclone plants. Because of the very low yield of 12 % coking coal product, run= ping costs are of the - utmost importance. For this reason extensive tests were carried out to establish the most effective crushing and bene= ficiation methods and suitable aquipment. At the second heavy medium separation stage, the near-gravity material (+ 0,1. g/cc) amounts to 45 % and daily plant performance ana=lysis is required to ensure acceptable plant efficiency. Beneficiation processes for the -0,5 mm coal originally considered were froth flotation, shaking tables, heavy medium cyclones and water- only cyclones. When the froth flotation route was decided upon, further test work was done to enable selection of the equipment most suitable for the particular requirements.

This paper outlines the authors' views of the methodologies which can be employed to value mineral properties at different stages of development for the purposes of project financing, mergers and public floats. This paper discusses the key issues in Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis including the importance of data verification and the shortcomings in DCF analysis. Stockmarket valuation measures and valuation methodology for exploration and pre development projects are examined through examples and pitfalls are identified. The use of valuations in corporate transactions and their strategic value is also discussed.

The appraisal of mineral reserves by a lender is carried out at the initial stages in developing a loan for a mine. The depth of investigations is influenced by the competence of the explorer, the type of commodity and knowledge of the geological environment. The lender looks for a reserve life which exceeds the term of the loan plus contingencies for events such as cost over-runs, adverse markets and production difficulties. The physical features of importance are discussed. Factors with direct financial implications are considered for their incorp- oration in sensitivity analyses to allow risk appraisal. When satisfied, the lender can then proceed to review cash flow forecasts, the basic strength of the project, then determine with the borrower the components and alternat- ives of a loan package.

The Sishen iron-ore-mine produces 3 pro= ducts with size gradings of 25 to 8 mm, 11 to 5 mm and 5 to 0,2 mm and has a product capacity of 20 Mtpa. Ore is produced at an average Fe content of 66,2 % Fe for the two coarser pro= ducts and an average of 65,3 % Fe for the fine ore product. Three stage crushing is practised to re= duce the run-of-mine ore to -90 mm after which it is screened into five different size frac= tions of which four are heavy media beneficiated in static baths and cyclones and the fifth frac= tion discarded to slimes dams. A final three stage crushing and screening process is employed to produce the final three Products which are homogenized by means of blen=ding systems nrinr to despatch.

Commissioning is one of the many phases of a project, it has inter-dependencies with the other phases, as they have amongst themselves, and has its own terminology and distinctive features. Commissioning time and cost can severely affect project economics, especially through unrealistic estimating, and requires a separate management team to ensure full control is. maintained. Targets to be achieved in commissioning are identified, together with the necessary policies to achieve them. Factors which have to be taken into account in applying these policies are Discussed.

The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. Local folding plunging gently SW is cut by a south dipping fault, probably a thrust, in which the reef was later formed at about the time of the granitic intrusion. The current drill-and-blast method of tunnelling is cyclic and, for this reason above all others, has a future application potential which is lower than that of continuous methods. There is scope for progress in several facets of today's drill-and-blast tunnelling. But even if each of its unit operations and the synthesis of these were to be optimised, this conventional method will, in the long term, fail to be a serious competitor for tunnelboring machines (TBMs), roadheaders and the like. If its role in tunnelling is not to decline at an increasing rate, drill-and-blast will need to be transformed into a continuous system. Boring and cutting machines consume considerable energy (and expenditure) in creating rock fragments which are smaller than those required by muck-handling equipment. In this respect, blasting is more efficient. Mechanical methods are also less versatile and flexible and, when planning proceeds on a basis of meagre or inadequate geological data, cannot be costed as accurately. Currently, research gains for TBMs and roadheaders are greater than those for conventional tunnelling. If (as is likely) the disadvantages of mechanical methods continue to be reduced at a greater rate, the swing away from drilling and blasting will gain momentum.

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), operating in the Ertsberg Mining District in the Province of Papua, is developing the Grasberg Block Cave copper-gold mine. The site aims to output 160 000 t/d and will be located underneath the current Grasberg Open Pit. Initial studies of the potential to develop a block cave mine in the Grasberg orebody have revealed that the mine will require significant volumes of air. The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) project requires four primary fans (3750 kW each) to support production at full capacity.Fan #1 commissioning was accomplished successfully on 9 February 2012. However, Fan #2 chamber, which is separated by a 20 m pillar, had not been completed. The main challenge was Fan #2 chamber still needed to be benched. The risk of damage to the critical infrastructure in Fan #1 chamber, including ground support, cracks in pedestals, and misalignment in the impeller shaft were considered. The challenges were blasting the bench without damaging the surrounding infrastructure, completing the work safely and meeting the schedule. This was achieved with the engineering control methodology. The combination of new tools with a more rigorous approach to understanding the interaction of mill liners with overall mill performance and economics, forms the basis of an integrated approach to liner management. Based on accurate liner wear measurements, some (limited) physical mill inspections and surveys, accurate calibration of the mill load and analysis of process data, a whole new approach to liner selection, relining intervals and mill control is proposed. Collection and analysis of this information in operating mills illustrates the mill performance improvement which can be attained through this careful measurement and modelling approach.A more holistic approach to liner management is proposed, including a broadening of the current work to cover the potential benefits of improved relining technologies and predictive liner wear modelling. Rio Tinto Alcan has undertaken feasibility level assessments into the expansion of its bauxite mining operation in an area south of the Embley River in far north Queensland. The project has the potential to extend their Weipa operations by approximately 40 years.The construction and operation of two additional mineral ore processing plants are proposed for the South of Embley project. Golder Associates was engaged to develop and conduct modelling assessments of potential sources of water supply required by mineral ore processing.Two models were developed using GoldSim: a dam yield model and a water balance model. GoldSim is a graphical object-oriented modelling environment with a capacity to carry out dynamic probabilistic simulations. Originally developed by Golder, GoldSim has been applied successfully in a decision support role to a range of mine water management operations.The dam yield model was used to provide estimates of reliability and volume of annual water supply of several potential surface water dams. This information was then used to determine a hierarchy of water supply options for processing plant operations. The water balance model dynamically simulated the water demands of the two production plants and the consequential response in water supply, with respect to the timing and discharges provided by the various source options.Use of the model provided a preliminary operational tool to assist with water supply management decisions. Water quality issues required a blending of water from separate sources and attention paid to scheduling to ensure water supply through the dry season. The model also helped identify risks to water supply in the event of underperformance of one or more water supply sources. "Mines around the world are inherently and operationally diverse. Current methodologies for the design of mine ventilation and cooling infrastructure involve controlling major safety and health hazards. Globally, it can be estimated that mine ventilation systems from various commoditiescirculate over 150 000 m3/s of exhaust air through shafts. Additionally, over 2 000 000 workersare transported every day through shafts in labour-intensive mining countries like China, India,Southern Africa, and the Americas. A key objective of this paper is to share experiences and provide a case for the revision of ætime-honouredÆ ventilation design parameters based on a benchmarking exercise on design exhaust shaft velocity from various global operations (gold, diamond, platinum, coal and base metals). An active fi eld observation on exhaust shaft velocity has indicated that, regardless of the commodity or continent where the mine operates, almost all life-of-mine (LOM) design parameters provided are in the same range of 20 m/s to 22 m/s, which is not convincing considering signifi cant variations exist in shaft depths, geography, commodity, operating and capital costs. From a due diligence perspective, there are no documented views that are available on the most widely used design exhaust air velocity. Based on the global exhaust shaft velocity data, it is noted that a significant portion of shaft velocities are outside the current design velocity of 20 m/s (some operating up to 30 m/s) and other signifi cant portions of the exhaust shafts operate in the critical velocity range. In the case of Australian coal mines, limited data suggests that none of the mines have ever reached the LOM design exhaust shaft velocity. It is self-evident that when the shafts are not operating at their design quantities either the mine system resistance is low or the ventilation and main fan is operating ineffi ciently. The most common reasons given for not reviewing the shaft system were, ætime-honouredÆ design parameter are being used and cannot be changed, mine fan pressure limits, possible fan blade damage, possible spontaneous combustion risks, leakage or simply did not consider such a possibility. In conclusion, the study has reiterated the historic lessons that a safe and expensive airway should not be utilised uneconomically by circulating too litt le air through it."

Since 2001, the AMIRA P420 gold processing technology project series has been studying the recovery of gold using gravity devices, with particular emphasis on the centrifugal units, Knelson and Falcon concentrators. The Kanmantoo Copper Project is owned and operated by Hillgrove Resources Limited and is situated in the Adelaide Hills region in South Australia. Mining in the area has taken place off and on over the last 140 years to recover metal from both copper and lead-zinc ores. Following the successful completion of a marked ball test defining the potential wear benefits the high chrome alloys may offer against forged steel, as well as laboratory test work investigating changes in pulp chemistry and improvements to metallurgical performance, a plant trial was commissioned at NewcrestÆs Ridgeway concentrator. The paper briefly describes these results.Newcrest decided to convert their media charge by the top-up method. To monitor the trial a sampling protocol was put in place whereby the pulp chemistry was monitored before, during and after the purge. The metallurgical shift data was analysed using various statistical methods to determine if the metallurgical performance had improved with the change in grinding media. While the analysis indicated that the metallurgy had improved, not all of the benefits could be assigned to the change in grinding media alone. However, the combination of reduction in media wear and the increases in copper and gold recoveries suggested that it was economically viable to operate with high chrome grinding media.As with many trials of this nature the prevailing economic conditions are fluid and a decision was made to revert back to forged steel grinding media in an effort to reduce operating costs. It was further agreed that Magotteaux could monitor the pulp chemistry and metallurgical changes in this reverse trial to confirm the results observed in the earlier conversion to high chrome grinding media.CITATION:Greet, C J, Hitchen, C and Kinal, J, 2012. Gold in sulfide ores is associated predominantly with sulfide minerals and occurs as both microscopic and submicroscopic particles. In non-refractory sulfide ores, gold occurs mainly as coarse- and medium-grained particles. Minute inclusions and submicroscopic gold usually account for a minor portion. In contrast, gold in refractory sulfide ores occurs mainly as minute particles and submicroscopic gold, and microscopic gold usually accounts for an insignificant portion. In gold ores containing carbonaceous material, the preg-robbing nature of carbonaceous material may impose challenges on gold extraction and cause gold losses. To extract gold from refractory sulfide ores, the ore needs to be finely ground and preoxidation is often required. Sulfide host minerals must first be oxidised to create a porous structure through which the cyanide leach solution can penetrate to reach the colloidal gold particles. The oxidation is traditionally achieved by roasting, autoclaving or bacterial oxidation. In carbonaceous sulfide ores exhibiting a preg-robbing nature, the carbonaceous material needs to be treated by roasting, autoclaving or other means to minimise the preg-robbing effect. As a predictive and troubleshooting tool, the gold deportment study plays an important role in gold metallurgy. It determines the deportment of gold in an ore or mill product and identifies the mineralogical issues that may affect or may have affected gold extraction. The information acquired from a gold deportment study can be used to assist in process selection, flow sheet development, recovery improvement and reagent optimisation.CITATION:Zhou, J, 2013. Operational grinding mills emit significant acoustic emissions which are a consequence of the dynamic environment prevailing inside them. From a technical perspective, the noise presents an opportunity to determine some details of the processes occurring inside the mills. The noise generated is not random and can be attributed to a range of events that occur inside these mills, consequently non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour provide powerful insights into the operation of primary comminution tumbling mills. To enable a logically coherent picture to be formed of the processes inside a mill, arrays of microphones have been used. This approach allows a clearer picture of the in-mill behaviour of the charge to be accessed. In contrast to single microphone approaches, usually located near the expected charge toe position, an array of microphones allows much more useful information to be obtained from grinding mill noise.This paper will discuss and present data obtained from microphone arrays positioned at the toe and shoulder locations of a mill, and how this information can then be used for the optimisation of grinding mills in real-time.CITATION:Pax, R A, 2012.
