Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited has been carried out by dissecting operations into small elemental components, and accurately timing these elements. Over a wide range of observations, this has enabled standard time values to be calculated for all underground work.The application of the standard values is in calculating performances as a measure of work output and Performance Controls are kept on approximately two-thirds of underground employees. Through the Controls it has been possible to stimulate supervisory action to improve low performance, and to reduce delays and lost time.The values are used to calculate contract" prices, and anomalies in previous prices have been adjusted on work values and not on arbitrary standards. In out-of-the-ordinary circumstances, the request for a timestudy investigation has been made by both operatives and foremen, and the contract set following the timestudy analysis has been to the satisfaction of both parties.The range of values enables contracts to be applied to work which was previously performed on a day basis, resulting in improved performance.A natural corollary of timestudy is the analysis of methods, and in some cases method improvements have been introduced.It is anticipated that further investigations will be made on methods.INTRODUCTIONIn 1953, a Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited was commenced under the guidance of management consultants. The paper explores the sustainability of the Australian mining industry, and the potential for application of a substitute fuel into existing mining operations. This alternative fuel biodiesel is produced from biological oils and not from refined hydrocarbons like the transport fuel diesel (petrodiesel). The fuel is compatible with all current diesel equipment with little to no modification and has many superior properties. As biodiesel is derived from biological sources it is æcarbon neutralÆ meaning there is no net carbon addition to the atmosphere when the fuel is burned. The current fuel, petrodiesel releases long stored carbon dioxide (CO2) and is of concern to Australian government targets which seek to reduce these emissions. The mining industryÆs unique reliance on petrodiesel is of particular interest when assessing the substitution of biodiesel into underground and open cut operations. The underground benefits of biodiesel see a reduction in the noxious emissions of carbon monoxide and diesel particulate matter, both contaminants which require extensive diluting ventilation to ensure safe levels. As biodiesel is both safer to store due to its higher flash point and produces less exhaust emissions, its occupational health and safety benefits in underground mines is clear. The use of biodiesel in open cut mines benefits the environmental sustainability aspects of the project. The formulation of national targets relating to carbon dioxide emission reductions promotes any measure to reduce CO2 within the mining environment. As the diesel engine is one of the least emission efficient (kWh/tonne CO2) energy sources on-site, its potential for reduction in CO2 at minimal cost is the greatest. By substituting the fuel, significant quantities of site emissions are reduced, thereby achieving the goals of improved site sustainability and the governmentÆs targets to reduce emissions. This aspect of gauging mutually beneficial relationship regarding government interests and mining industry profitability is the underlying outcome for this paper.

Aspects of sampling are becoming more complex, involving a correct statistical approach to collection as well as geological and possibly pedological control. Advanced chemical techniques and techniques of rapid analysis need to be understood. Results may require statistical analysis. The elementary aspects of sampling still need constant attention by those controlling a programme of sampling. No one person will have sufficient knowledge of statistics, geology, pedology and chemistry to be fully conversant with all the aspects of sampling but, by developing a correct approach, problems can be identified and solved.

The Gold Ridge Mine is an open-cut gold mine in the Solomon Islands. The mine is owned and operated by Gold Ridge Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ross Mining NL. At the invitation of the Solomon Island Government, project construction commenced in July 1997 and gold production commenced in August 1998. The mine is the countryÆs first, and represents a major milestone in the development of the Solomon Islands. At the time of project approval and construction, there was a growing awareness in the country of the potential impacts of mining in the tropics, partly due to unfavourable publicity surrounding a number of other mining operations in the Pacific region. The management of environmental impacts was therefore an important consideration in the approval of the project, and continues to receive a high level of attention from the Government and community. Ross Mining did not commit to the Gold Ridge Project until it had satisfied itself that all waste rock and tailings could be safely contained on-site, and that the standards normally expected of a mine in Australia could be met. Ross Mining approached the approval, construction, and operation of the Gold Ridge Mine with a set of operating principles that met Government and community concerns. These were:best practice environmental management; operation of the mine in accordance with standards expected of mining operations in Australia; independent peer review of key technical aspects; on-going consultation with Government and community; and equitable transfer of wealth to landowners and the local community. As a consequence, the Gold Ridge Mine has developed into a successful mining operation with a high level of support from local landowners, the general community and the Central and Provincial Governments of the Solomon Islands.

The Mt Sinivit gold project is located approximately 50km SSW of Rabaul in the Baining Mountains of the Gazelle Peninsula, East New Britain Province. The deposits were discovered in mid- 1983 and form part of a larger 26km long zone of variably aurif- erous quartz veining. There are no surface indications or previ- ous records of any prospecting activity or production from the region. The Mt Sinivit deposits consist of a series of oxide and sulphide reserves and resources contained in the Wild Dog (South- ern, Central and Northern oxide zones; Northern sulphide zone) and Kavursuki veins. The proposed exploitation of the oxide reserves by a series of small-medium sized open pits has been fostered by the PNG Department of Mining & Petroleum (DMP) as part of a government policy to encourage the development of a small-medium sized mining industry in the country. The aim of this paper is to document the steps and procedures involved in obtaining the grant of a Mining Lease emphasising the time and the expenditures required during each step of the approvals process for the Mt Sinivit project.

The geology and mineral deposits of the West Pilbara Goldfield are described and comparison is made with the Pilbara Goldfield,, In the West Pilbai'a Goldfield two adjacent environments are represented by a predominantly clastic succession and a predominantly volcanic succession. These two successions are lateral equivalents and lithologically they are similar to the classical successions at Warrdiwdbna and Mosquito Creek. How- ever, no evidence of a significant erosional break has been found. It is suggested that the Archaean rocks of: the Pilbara Block represent a single geosynclinal cycle, which culminated in orogenesis, within which-local disconformities have been developed in various places: and that the sub-Mosquito; Creek unconformity at Eastern Creek may be the most widespread of these disconformities, Widespread evidence of'preconsolidation movement, aid the intrusion of igneous rock into. unconsolidated sediment, suggest that tectonism and igneous activity began at a very early stage, This was localised along lines of fracture in an unidentified basement.,.Moveme.nt was primarily vertical and persisted into the older Proterozoic, The sediments were enriched in metal by vulcanicity, chemical sedimentation, and possibly detrit`1' contribution. The Argentine pyroclastic loess arevulcanogenic deposits, which have their sources in the circumnpacific rim. The object of this work is to realize a de-tailed mineralogical characterization of this sediments, to use it like a geo logic outline which regiters discordance or similarity in them, The sampling zone extend from 714N-4125 to 622W-339S. The descriptions of these sediments was considered like basic, mesobasic or acid rocks. The basic sediments, looking like andesite-basaltic composition, are fill-ing the andean valley. The mesobasic one have a similar composition with a pyro-clastic dacite rock, and have been found in marshy pleistocene sediments in the intermountain valley and in the pampeana prairies. The acid ashed conform rhyoda-cite-rhyolite sediments which form the pampeana loess covers in the prairie.

The criteria developed for the Argyle Diamond Mine process plant control system are reviewed. The control system installed is described along with a discussion of the method of implementation adopted. The control system was extensively tested prior to instal- lation at site. This approach led to signi- ficant time savings during plant commissioning and facilitated rapid escalation of plant production. The control system has performed satisfactorily with a high level of operator acceptance and basically satisfies the criteria Developed.

Construction and mining sites are often subject to unexpected flooding and extensive delays may occur in locating and installing emergency pumps. This particularly applies to sites located in remote areas. A simple and effective pump, called an air-lift pump, can be built from the equipment available at the working site. The basic req- uirements are a compressed air supply, air hose and conventional water pipes. The air-lift pump is comparatively in- efficient but approximately 35 per cent of the available compressed air power at the site can be applied to pumping. Suprisingly high liquid discharge rates may be obtained in suitable applications. The theoretical and practical consider- ations of the air-lift pump are evaluated and a suggested procedure for the emergency design and construction is outlined. INTRODUCTION. Arrium’s magnetite concentrator has recently completed a modification program to improve the process that has been in operation in Whyalla, South Australia for the previous seven years. The magnetite concentrate is pumped via pipeline to the coast and serves as pellet plant feed, eventually being turned into steel in the Whyalla blast furnace. With the addition of a new 3MW IsaMill at the concentrator, the plant has seen increased production from a reduced feed grade, enabling Arrium to treat ores previously stockpiled as waste. As an Inspector of Mines in Queensland, my main responsibilities include the enforcement of the Mining Act 1968 - 1986, the Mines Regulation Act 1964 - 1983 and the Metalliferous Mining regulations 1985 to promote the safe and responsible exploitation of the States' mineral wealth. An important adjunct to this task is the offering of an advisory service to the mining industry. However, in the pursuit of my duties to this regard, I have sadly observed in some cases, numerous wrong doings and negative activities by miners which have led to their ultimate demise, not to mention that of others. Despite what I consider corrective advice, I have witnessed, again in some cases, disregard and blind pursuit for the wrong end. This then is a novel approach to get the message home in the form of a light hearted cartoon presentation relating the saga of an average Aussie battler entering the mining game unprepared, making the wrong decisions due to his own ignorance and the cleverness of others, leading finally to his and possibly others' downfall. It is not intended to insult any particular profession or group of individuals and only endeavours to impart to readers and listeners, the message of being prepared and alert when entering the gold mining industry. Even though the presentation focuses on the woes of a rookie alluvial gold miner, a similar analogy could be drawn with his hard rock counterpart since the basic issues that I have attempted to address are common. By no means is there a saga complete because there are many more traps a miner can inadvertently fall into and only time has prevented me from referencing them.

The plant practice plays an important role in production and productivity. Men, material and machinery have to be judicially utilised to achieve maximum output with minimum cost. Improvements in technology should be incorporated at an appropriate time and place. The personnel concerned should be properly trained and motivated to receive the changes in machinery and technology. UNLIKE coal mines, in which some form of artificial ventilation is rendered necessary by gases given off by the material mined and is also enforced by the mining laws of all countries, metalliferous mines have almost entirely relied on natural ventilation, viz., that due to the difference in temperature between the outside atmosphere and the mine air. In small mines natural ventilation has proved sufficient, but as mining proceeds at a greater depth, and where large ore bodies arebeing attacked the writer is of opinion that some means of artificial ventilation will be rendered necessary if only from an economic standpoint.The Broken Hill Proprietary Mine was one of the first metal mines to introduce a scheme of artificial ventilation on a large scale. In order to render the working conditions of the semi-friable stopes of Block 12 and the lower levels of Block 11 morecomfortable for the men at work in these places, in 1903 it was decided to install a fan to thoroughly ventilate these stopes. The fan chosen was a Capell double-inlet fan beltdriven from a steam engine: this engine was later on replacedby an electric motor. The fan was put in commission at the latter end of 1904; its principal dimensions are as follows: Length 6 ft. 6 in., diam. 7 ft., diam. of inlet 4 ft. 7i in. The fan is reversible, though this is a rather misleading term, asthe direction in which the fan blades revolve is not reversed...

Mining and treatment of gold ore in the Ashanti region at Obuasi, Ghana has been continuous for more than 100 years. Earlier production from this world class deposit can be traced far into the history of West Africa's gold trade. As part of a general development and expansion program, Ashanti Goldfields Corporation (Ghana) recently undertook a program to heap leach oxidized near surface ore. Kappes, Cassiday & Associates was given a major role in the design, equipment supply, installation and start-up management of the 3000 tonne/day heap leach. Unusual conditions included a high annual rainfall and an ore which could be characterized as a soft, decomposed, water saturated schist. Production began in March 1990. Startup problems and their solutions are discussed.

Blasting is at first sight a simple operation. Blastholes are drilled in a suitable pattern, primed, charged with explosives, stemmed and finally the blastholes are connected together to give the appro- priate initiation sequence. In practice the action of the explosive takes place in the interior of an opaque rock mass and only the external faces of the rock mass to be blasted can be easily observed. The mechanisms of blasting cannot be observed directly and must be inferred from observations of the free face and meas- urements of particle movement made by sensors grouted into holes in the rock. Explosives react very rapidly, in some microse- conds and any instrumentation of a blast must have an appro- priate response time. In many mines several rock types can be encountered during production. Several different methods of blasting may be necessary to cope with changes in rock types espe- cially if weak rocks are found in the final limits. This also makes it difficult to be sure of getting a large enough volume of rock to perform a series of reproducible experiments. While there appears to be agreement on the mechanism of blasting it is unlikely that a detailed understanding of how all the variables that can be encountered in practice affect blasting. The ease of assessment of the results of blasting depends on the criteria used. It is easy to isolate, measure and count over- size boulders. It is however difficult and costly to get a complete fragment size distribution. Methods used to assess blasting can vary significantly from site to site and the ways in which data are collected, presented and analysed will vary making compari- son of blasts at several locations very difficult. The definition of an optimum blast can also vary with the type of blasting. The muck-pile profile and fragmentation will be different for a dragline to that for a truck and shovel operation. In order to be able to assess blasting the mechanism has to be understood. Th rock and explosive properties considered rele- vant to blasting can then be determined. In 1974 a preliminary study of the refractories industry in theRepublic of Indonesia was completed by Crown Lynn Consultants, a subsidiary of Cerarnco Ltd., on behalf of the Indonesian and New Zealand Governments. As a result of recommendations arising from that study the two Governments commissioned, in 1976, as a Bilateral Assistance project, an investigation into the potential of the refractories industry in Indonesia. Ceramco Ltd., was retained to carry out the study on behalf of the New Zealand Government. The Directorate-General of Chemical Industries, Directorate of Silicate Industries administered the project on behalf of the Indonesian Government. Indonesian counterparts to the New Zealand study team were provided by the Directorate of Silicate Industries.

The production of synthetic crude oil requires a suitable coal or a coal extract modified by hydrogenation for pyrolysis. Existing classifications are broadly based on historical and current needs. One, Seyler's, is based on a visual display which can be used to present petrographic bounds. The analysis of the coal extracts from solvent hydrogen-donor testing allows an experimental limit to be described and a plant limit to be indicated. Australian black coals are discussed within these petrographic and plant bounds and their limitations as a feed for the production of synthetic crude presented. Potential uses for the aromatic liquid products are suggested. The application of the diagram as a screening procedure for sub-hydrous coals is described.

BHP-Utah Coal Limited's Peak Downs Mine is located in Cen- tral Queensland, approximately 200 km south west of Mackay. The annual raw coal production of the mine is over 8 million tpa, requiring the removal of about 40 million cubic metres of prime overburden. This is achieved through the use of five large draglines. The large depths of overburden (up to 55 metres) encountered over half the strike length of the mine enables cast blasting to be carried out in conjunction with draglines employ- ing the chopping method of digging. The objective of cast blast- ing is to use explosive energy to move as much material directly into spoil as possible. The additional costs of drilling and blast- ing are offset by reducing dragline rehandle. Two factors which are of primary importance to the design of cast blasts are initiation control and material velocity. High speed motion picture photography is a powerful diagnostic tool to quantify these aspects of blasting (Winzer, Montenyohl and Ritter, 1979; Chiappetta et al., 1983; Anon., 1983). The objec- tives of such analysis are to: 1. Determine the burden velocity, 2. Determine the time to initial movement (that is, the inter- val between a face hole firing and the initial movement of the burden), 3. Check the accuracy of the initiation sequence. BHP Central Research Laboratories (CRL) and Peak Downs Mine monitored a cast blast in the mine's Winchester Pit on 18 August, 1988. The objectives of this exercise were to: 1. Quantify current cast blast performance, providing a base case for comparison with modified blast design. 2. Compare two orientations of angled holes within the blast. 3. Assess the effectiveness of cast blasting utilising an air-deck. 4. Check blast timing with respect to burden movement times.
