WITHOUT diffusion taking place in liquid metals and alloys, no castings could be made; it is therefore the most important factor affecting the structure of metals. Diffusion involves the interchange of atoms, a process which takes place during the life history of an ingot. In the liquid, atoms are in a state of high thermal agitation, but this thermal vibration is reduced in amplitude with falling temperature. When solidification sets in, the atoms arrange themselves on an ordered space lattice and the changes in structure which take place in the solid are due to the interchange of atoms on this space lattice. The rate of atomic interchange-e.g., of diffusion-is most rapid at temperatures close to the melting point and decelerates as the temperature is lowered. At room temperature, the rate of diffusion is practically negligible in most alloys, and any change in structure can only be brought about by using methods which will accelerate the rate of diffusion. The rate of diffusion depends on three factors (I) temperature; (2) concentration gradient and (3) activation energy. The growth of grains and particles in the solid alloy also depend on these factors and are therefore intimately associated with diffusion. The rate of homogenization in a cast alloy depends on several factors, such as: (I) rate of solidification, which involves grain and particle size which, in their turn, depend on diffusion: (2) the nature of the constituents; (3) the temperature interval between the melting point of the metal or alloy and the temperature at which it is being heat-treated. It is well known that coarse, cast structures are extremely difficult-if possible to homogenize, and the finer the grain size and particle size, the more readily solid solution will take place. The rate of diffusion depends, also, largely on the nature of the constituents; for instance, copper and magnesium form solid solutions with aluminum quite readily but nickel and iron do not; neither do certain intermetallic compounds, such as alpha and beta FeSi. Furthermore, the actual formation of intermetallic compounds may be a very slow process, particularly when they are formed in the solid state as equilibrium products. For example, ßFeSi is formed in the solid as the result of the reaction aFeSi + Al?ß FeSi. The particles of aFeSi become sur¬rounded with a reaction ring of ßßFeSi. This layer is formed as the result of diffusion of atoms taking place between the aluminum matrix and aFeSi. As the amount of ßFeSi surrounding the core of aFeSi increases the concentration gradient becomes low and so the rate of diffusion of atoms also decreases until it practically ceases. This occurs after a comparatively thin layer of ßFeSi has been formed. It follows that when intermetallic compounds of this type are formed in the solid, as the result of diffusion, it is generally impossible ever to attain equilibrium, since the forma-

THE Negaunee mine is at the east end of the Marquette Range, in the city of Negaunee, on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Iron ore was first discovered on this property in 1883 by diamond drilling. A shaft was sunk soon afterward, and the mine has been worked continuously ever since. The total shipments from 1887 to' Jan. 1, 1945, were 20,417,587 long tons. The mine was taken over by the present operators, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., in 1903. During the past four years, 1941 to 1944 inclusive, the property has produced an average of nearly a million tons a year, and has employed more than 400 men. GEOLOGY The ore body at the Negaunee mine lies in a large syncline dipping about 15° to the west, the ore coming to ledge at the east end of the trough. The ore occurs in the Negaunee formation of the middle Huronian age, which consists of ferruginous cherts and slates through which intrusions of diorite have occurred. Although these intrusions of diorite have an important bearing on the formation of ore on the range, they are not important in this ore body. Some faulting has taken place along the diorite intrusions, or dikes as they are called locally, and also other faults are known to exist across the formation. These faults do not complicate either mining or development of the ore body. The footwall consists of jasper underlain with Siamo slate; the hanging wall is jasper and ferruginous chert. Fig. I shows a typical cross section of the ore body. The ore body is quite regular, about 120 ft. thick in the middle of the syncline and thinning out toward both sides of the fold. Its width ranges from 400 to 800 ft., the average being about 600 ft. The footwall is uniform in dip and strike, but irregular lenses of ore often extend 50 to 75 ft. up into the overlying jasper capping. METHOD OF MINING Ore in the Negaunee mine has been mined by top slicing almost exclusively since 1903. This method of mining has been employed because it is especially adapted to the size and shape of the Negaunee ore body, and to the soft, sticky nature of the ore as well as the generally soft, broken jasper capping. Development The ore body has been developed from six different levels with intervals varying between l00 and 125 ft. On the average, the dip causes a horizontal offset of 350 ft. per level, and under these circumstances it has been necessary to carry on considerable development in rock to make available the ore lying along the north and east footwalls. STUDIES of ground movement and subsidence resulting from mining operations cover a broad field. It is also a very important consideration and one that eventually affects nearly every mining operation of any extent. The damage to surface buildings, removal of mine surface plants and replacements of main hoisting shafts must reach an astounding expenditure were these cost figures available over a period of years. Were the subject one of mathematical formula and dependent only on the angle of draw of the walls or country rocks, the problem would be relatively simple. Consideration must be given to depth and extent of workings; structural conditions of the orebodies and enclosing country rock; physical properties of these same rocks, including schistosity, bedding, jointing, slips, dikes, faults, and other structural weaknesses. The method of mining, extent of openings, supporting pillars, and amount of moisture or water underground are other pertinent factors. With such a large number of variable factors, it is apparent that the subject of subsidence is one that must be based largely on experience and results at other mines where conditions are somewhat comparable. In presenting this paper, it is the intent to describe the progressive results of past ground movements at the United Verde, to bring out physical conditions largely responsible for this movement, but to refrain from theorizing on the ultimate extent of subsidence resulting from future mining operations.

More than 90 per cent of the ore produced by stoping at McIntyre is mined by horizontal cut-and-fill methods. The remainder is mined by square set and fill. In the stopes on the upper levels, mill holes are spaced 80 ft. apart and usually it is feasible to mine the breast for the full distance between the mill holes in one operation and to break, clean out and fill without any support for the roof or walls, other than the odd crown bar or sprag. The ore is scraped to the mill holes by small (10 to 15 hp.) air-operated slusher hoists. No grizzlies are used over the chutes and care is taken to break up the big pieces beforehand. Fill usually is spread by tramming sand or waste in a one-ton car from the fill raise. Fill raises are driven parallel to the strike of the vein and are inclined at approximately 48°. In long stopes, where more than one fill raise is necessary, they are spaced about 300 ft. apart. It is sometimes necessary to stand square sets for a short distance each way under the brow of the fill raise. support needed increases and on the lower levels and in some wide stopes where closer support of the back is necessary, it has become standard practice to timber the stope with 12 by 12-in. timber. Rough timber sets consisting. of caps, tightly blocked to the back and supported on posts 7 ft. high, are placed at about 5 ft. intervals. These sets are generally salvaged from the lower breast before blasting and are used again on the upper slice after the fill has been placed. In general, two or three breasts may be broken down before mucking out and filling and the ground stands long enough to enable this to be done safely. On the lower levels and in certain wide stopes and in heavy ground, a more intermittent method must be used. Only one breast or even part of a breast can be blasted and the back must be timbered before the ore can be removed. In these cases, sill timbers 16 ft. long, supported at one end on posts from the fill and at the other end on pins inserted in holes drilled in the face, are used. Timber cribs 5 by 9 ft. built from the fill to the roof and tightly blocked to the back are used throughout the mine to reinforce both the timber sets and the square sets.

A historical comparison of the frequency of fatal coal mining accidents occurring underground in mines of various size ranges in the United States and in member countries of the Commission of the European Communities is presented. Frequencies are normalized on hours-worked and tons-produced bases. The comparisons rely on published and confirmed data and on theory for selective treatment of data in an effort to overcome reporting differences and basic differences in the mining conditions and system employed. Trends are identified ad projections made of the effect on accident records of various industry growth patterns. Conclusions are drawn regarding the reasons for differences between the records of U.S. underground coal mines and the records of those mines in European countries.

A specialized electronic data system processes data taken from normal gologic maps and stratigraphic tables to yield predictions of uranium resource location for an area such as much of the United States. Strata underlying specific quadrangle cells of the earth are evaluated for uranium favorability on the basis of selected criteria of lithology, structure, and stratigraphy but not specific past production in the area. Stored data are computer processed to yield volume of likely host rock beneath each cell to a given depth and at a given favorobility level. Results are plotted by machine directly as maps. A specialized and simplified procedure for predicting approximate uranium resources has been devised at Stanford Research Institute (SRI). The prediction is based on general geology beneath specific area cells of the earth in order to provide complete volume coverage; the strata underlying these areas are evaluated for uranium mineral favorability on the basis of a few selected geologic criteria in order to allow rapid data input. In order that the predictions be generally applicable, they are based on geological factors only, not past ore production of a given cell. Since the bulk of U.S. resources are in elastic host rocks, only such strata are considered in this work. This paper describes the structure and some details of the resource system and how it was tested in an area of the western United States.

The purpose of this paper is threefold: 1) to describe actual ground control installations made at the various mines of the International Nickel Co. (Canada) Ltd mines in Sudbury, Ont. during a planned test program. 2) to suggest new ground control techniques which are now possible by the use of fully grouted bolts 3) to indicate the possible economic advantages to be gained by the use of resins and resin grouted bolts to control difficult ground conditions. Were a theme selected for this paper it would be: "Preserve the original roof in best condition possible by the use of smooth blasting techniques and fully grouted roof bolts — since the original rock is the best and cheapest material available for ground support." TYPES OF BONDED BOLTS As has been shown previously, there are several ways in which a bolt may be bonded. These are illustrated in Fig. 1 and 2. There are three general types of grouted bolts: 1) pretensioned, 2) post-tensioned, and 3) untensioned. The type which will be of most benefit to the user will depend upon the particular ground support problem involved. Despite the many arguments propounded for the necessity for using a tensioned bolt, ample evidence exists from actual experience that untensioned bolts can be effective in many instances. The outstanding characteristic of a grouted bolt is that it provides the user with a variety of rock consolidation techniques heretofore unavailable with conventional rock bolts. Many of the unusual characteristics of grouted reinforcing bar have been evaluated by researchers in the concrete structure field.' Underground application has largely been pioneered in the construction field, with especially good work being reported from the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Authority in Australia. Techniques developed there using cement grouted bolts are now being adapted in many large government construction projects in this country with excellent results. The ap- plications described in this paper are those in which Cyanamid's Roc Loc Mining Kits were used exclusively. SLUSHER DRIFTS AND FINGER RAISES (BOX HOLE BROWS, DASHES) A common mining problem especially where block caving methods are applied is that of maintaining the roof in slusher trenches particularly at the intersections of the trench with the feed raises (box holes) through which the large fragments of broken ore tumble. Typical sections are shown in Fig. 3 and 4. In Fig. 3, the drift is normally driven 7 ft wide by 8 ft high initially. The rock involved is a hard norite (diabase) which is usually competent but has "block cleavage". This roof has a tendency to fall out in large blocks when subjected to operating stresses. Copper and the copper-base solid solutions readily form twin crystals when plastically deformed at a suitably elevated temperature or annealed after cold deformation. In fact, no feature of the microstructure of these materials is more prominent or characteristic than these straight-sided bands or simple lines of division which sometimes come from groups of thin polysynthetic lamellae, penetrating part way or wholly through the parent grain substance, but often divide the grain into a few or perhaps only two crystallographically related parts. Nearly always the bands as seen in the usual microscopic examination of a specimen come into vivid contrast with the adjacent crystalline material owing to the inherent difference in orientation. Bands which under special conditions of orientation cannot be seen with vertically incident light are often visible under oblique illumination and, when this fails, contrasting effects usually may be obtained by using polarized light. There is no longer any doubt that these synthetic banded structures obtained in the ordinary course of working and annealing are due to twinning of the spinel type which was observed long ago in a number of metals crystallizing in the isometric system.' It has been customary in metallurgical literature to designate these synthetic twins, which grow into prominence during an annealing process, as "annealing twins" without regard to the actual mode of their formation, which is, indeed, obscure and with scant recognition of the fact that prior deformation is essential, no twins having been observed in metal of known unstrained history. This is questionable; especially in view of the fact that in a number of metals and minerals, reorientation into the twin configuration is known to occur as a result of a simple shearing mechanism along the recognized twinning planes and the

The solubility of iron and cobalt in liquid lead, the solubility of chromium in liquid tin, and nickel in liquid silver were determined up to 1300°C in an atmosphere of hydrogen. Liquid samples were taken at different temperatures and analyzed. The data obtained were plotted to show the relationship between log mole fraction of solute and the inverse of the absolute temperature. Resulting values for the differential heat of solution (AH) and the excesspartial molar entropy (S)are: for the iron-lead system = _24,200 cal per mole and AT = 5.0 e.u. for the a phase, and AH = 18,300 and S = -0.1 e.u. for the y phase; for the cobalt-lead system AH = 16,500 cal per mole and AS =0.7 e.u.; for the chromium-tin system AH = 15,600 cal per mole and AS = 8.5 e.u.; for the nickel-silver system AH =18,000 cal per mole and AS = 4.0 e.u. RECENT developments in coating, brazing, and heat transfer have focused attention on specific cases of solid-liquid interaction in metal systems, particularly those involving dilute liquid solutions. One fundamental quantity of interest in such systems is the equilibrium phase distribution between solid and liquid phases. In any effort to fully understand such interactions, one must be able to describe the equilibrium state precisely. Furthermore, in order to develop genera! relations for such systems, one must know the equilibrium state in a number of different cases. This investigation was devoted to a study of the equilibrium phase distribution in four binary systems: solid iron-liquid lead; solid cobalt-liquid lead; solid chromium-liquid tin; solid nickel-liquid silver. The iron-lead system was previously studied by Shepard and parkman' and later by Fleischer and Elliott2 with differing results. Both investigations were carried out by sampling the saturated liquid, and analyzing it chemically. The cobalt-lead system was previously reported by Pelzel,3 who noticed no discontinuity near the transformation. A limited investigation of the chromium-tin system was made by Wlodek and wulff4 using a weight loss method. This work was done in conjunction with the development of a process for coating molybdenum with chromium from tin solutions. To more fully under- stand the kinetics of the process, a more accurate determination of a solubility was desirable. No significant data were found in the literature on the nickel-silver system. Data on the latter system were, however, relevant to the investigation of the corrosion kinetics of copper-nickel alloys in liquid silver as carried out by Harrison and wagner,5 EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE Of the techniques available for the study of such systems the most effective appears to be that of liquid sampling,2,6,7 which is the method used in the present investigation. A schematic diagram of the sampling furnace is given in Fig. 1. Large pieces of solute metal, in excess of saturation solubility, were added to 200 g of the solvent metal, and the entire charge placed in an alundum crucible. Analytical reagent or materials of chemically pure grade were used in all investigations. The crucible was contained in a zircon muffle tube positioned vertically in the uniform hot zone of a Globar resistance furnace. The tube was provided with a number of ports which permitted sampling at temperature and in controlled atmospheres or vacuum; the ports were also useful for evacuation and introduction of gases as well as for thermocouple measurements. A chromel-alumel thermocouple Sheated in a porcelain tube was used for temperature measurements. A purified hydrogen atmosphere was employed in all experiments reported in this paper. On August 4, 1844, J. C. Fremont made the first record found of coal in Wyoming. On the North Fork of the Platte River, beyond Medicine Butte, in Carbon County, he noted: "in the precipitous bluffs were displayed a succession of strata containing fossil, vegetable remains, and several beds of coal. In some of the beds, the coal did not appear to be perfectly mineralized; and in some of the seams, it was compact and remarkably lustrous." A little later he noted, "longitude 111°, latitude 4 1/2°-Muddy R.--coal."1 In 1848, Clayton reported coal on Sulphur Creek near the site of old Bear River City, in Uinta County.2 Maj. Osborne Cross in his journal, on July 1, 1849, records seeing coal on Deer Creek and in one of the hills near Crooked Muddy Creek, in Converse County; on July 7, he records that the country from Deer Creek to the Sweetwater River abounds in coal, probably in Natrona and Carbon Counties.3 A letter from Asst. Quartermaster Van Vliet to General Jessup dated July 25, 1850, asked an appropriation for building shops at Fort Laramie for making repairs for the emigrants, and mentions "coal and timber," but undoubtedly meant charcoal, as no other mention of stone coal is made in the records of the fort.4 Stansbury, in 1852, placed on his map of this section the words: "Great Coal Basin," extending from the west bank of Bear River, near the present Evanston, to Point of Rocks in Sweetwater County. In 1859, a military coal reservation was established near here, but the coal was never worked to any great extent, although probably some was hauled to Fort Bridger for smithing purposes. When the fort was abandoned this reservation returned to the public lands .2 In the same year (1859), Hayden traced the lignite formation uninterruptedly from the upper Missouri Valley to a point on the North Platte River, about 80 miles northwest of Fort Laramie.5 On August 25, 1865,

Results of preliminary research on the use of small diameter water jets at high pressure for cutting rocks has demonstrated the possibility of effective cutting of anthracite. Detailed research has, therefore, been conducted at the Skotchinsky Institute of Mining to study the dynamics and structure of the small water jets and the mechanism by which they cut coal. One of the objects of this research was to obtain data for the design of a machine for cutting rock, based on the same principles as that for cutting coal. The productivity of water jet mining machines depends on the hydro- dynamic parameters of the jet. Therefore, the research on small diameter water jets was directed, initially to a study of the nature of the variation of these parameters, and to obtain a profile of dynamic pressure distribution over the section of the jet. As has been confirmed previously, the required jet pressure (to cut coal) lies in the range of 100 to 500 atmospheres. These pressures were utilized for the research. The diameter of the nozzle was changed as ~follows; 0.97; 1.24; 1.5; 2.17; 2.87; and 3.57 mm. Graphs showing dynamic pressures for each nozzle diameter and varied axial dynamic pressure were obtained over distances ranging from 2 to 70 cm from the nozzle. One of the most important hydrodynamic parameters of a jet, closely related to the dynamics of jet disturbance in air, is the magnitude of the axial dynhmic pressure. A study of the variation in this pressure with increasing distance from the nozzle led to the separation of the jet into three specific parts, which differ from each other not only in the nature of the change in dynamic pressure, but also in structural properties.

AIR conditioning, or air cooling, for the improvement of ventilation in the Butte mines has come into increasing use during the past 10 years. In part, the methods practiced have been described in previous publications of the Institute, but some improvements on earlier methods have been made and a number of new features have been developed. This paper is presented as a record of progress made, and for the sake of completeness describes all general features of the work. The need for air conditioning in the ventilation of mines in the district arises from the fact that the temperature of the ground and mine water has shown a very great increase with increase in mining depth, and has now reached a maximum of slightly over 130ºF. The most difficult part of the ventilation problem is the maintenance of temperature and humidity of a satisfactory standard in the working places, especially on the lower levels. Although ordinary ventilation is adequate to maintain good conditions in most of the working places it is subject to a number of limitations at great depth. Most important among these limitations is that with increase in depth the air becomes heated before it reaches the working places, both by compression from increase in atmospheric pressure and by heat transferred to it from rock at high temperature, so that its capacity for lowering temperatures is greatly reduced before it reaches the operating zone. Increasing depth of mining also increases the distance traveled by the air in its passage through the mine, and this causes a corresponding increase in resistance to air flow, so that there is greater difficulty in maintaining even the same volume in circulation. Thus, in the face of a demand that the ventilating system have a very much greater capacity to remove heat from the mine, the tendency is for that capacity to diminish. The only evident alternatives were (I) the opening of additional air shafts to increase the volume of air in circulation, (2) an extension of the existing system that would be subject to the same limitations, or (3) the adoption of an entirely different method such as air cooling. Fortunately for an economic solution of the problem, the mean annual temperature of the surface atmosphere at Butte is about 40°F., with very low relative humidity in summer, so that there is unlimited natural cooling power at a temperature range adaptable to air-conditioning methods. METHODS Two similar methods of air conditioning are used, as necessitated by service requirements and dependent upon the equipment available. In one, which is the more important and has the greater cooling capacity, water is circulated in a closed circuit, and, alternately, first absorbs heat from warm mine air and then dissipates it in the surface atmosphere by cooling at a cooling tower. The Government has for disposal a large stock of horse-drawn vehicles that were produced during the war to transport and handle all kinds of army supplies. These vehicles consist of escort wagons, also the axles and wheels; ambulances, model 1909; sprinkler, wagons, buckboards, combat wagons, hand carts, water carts, ration carts, and medical carts. These vehicles are adapted to numerous commercial purposes. All were produced under the strictest Government rules, specifications, and supervision and are first class in every way.

In a former paper (Trans., xvi., 770) I gave the text of the archaic mining law of the State of New York, together with some comments upon its curious provisions. In that connection I pointed out two facts : first, that the law seemed to have originated in the schemes of private parties, who were satisfied with those parts of it which concerned them particularly; and secondly, that the remaining provisions had been hitherto quite inoperative, for the reason that mines of the character to which they referred had not been discovered in the State. Since 1888, when that paper was written, the New York Legislature has passed several acts relating to mines as follows: 1. Chapter 394, Laws of 1890. This provides for an inspection
