A NUMBER of methods have been developed for the determination of the dust concentration in air, some of which have been reported as very efficient and for research may be more satisfactory than the method about to be described. In practical mine use, however, the accurate research equipment is unwieldy and requires a high degree of technical skill to manipulate it. Also, it gives less general practical information to the operator in the same length of time than the method described here. Moreover, it is doubtful whether at the present stage of affairs the results obtained from the precise methods have any more practical significance than those obtained with simpler and more portable apparatus, which can rapidly give a sufficiently reliable indication of the relative dust hazard. HISTORY OF DUST DETERMINATION IN ONTARIO The first record of mine-dust determination in Ontario is given in an article by Dr. J. H. Elliott,' in which he records a few dust counts made with the Palmer spray apparatus. There were insufficient data from which to draw any definite conclusions or reasonably compare with present-day counts using the konimeter. The first konimeter dust sampling was started in the Porcupine district in 1926, using light-field counting without adhesive and with no sample treatment before counting. A method of semidark-field counting was used from about 1928 to 1931 and dark-field illumination was adopted permanently about December 1931. The konimeter has been continued as the principal means of dust sampling in the mines of Ontario, where South African practice has been adopted because in South Africa most careful study has been given the problem of silicosis, and very complete records of work done there are

There is acute need for a method that will measure the size distribution of finely divided materials, particularly when the particle sizes are smaller than the openings of the finest screen cloth regularly available for testing. Several methods and types of apparatus are in common use, but none are entirely satisfactory for all purposes. The commonest methods are microscopic grain counts, elutriation by liquids or air, and sedimentation. Valuable results have been secured by air elutriating devices, typified by the Haultain Infra-Sizer and the Pearson Air Analyzer. These are especially useful in obtaining sized fractions that can be examined and analyzed separately. They are particularly advantageous because the sizes of the samples produced are adequate for a considerable amount of subsequent manipulation and testing. The sedimentation methods, such as the Wagner and Klein turbidimeters, and the sedimentation balance, do not deliver sized fractions, but they do provide a means for reasonably rapid comparative determina-tions of fineness and surface area, which are important in many industries. The sedimentation balance consists essentially of a balance pan suspended in a liquid that contains falling particles. These are weighed as they settle onto the pan, and the time rate of settling is determined. The size distribution is computed from the settling rate. The balance appears to be inherently more accurate than any of the other methods, and it has served a useful purpose in the study of numerous problems, but there have been limitations which have restricted its scope of application. Because of the essential simplicity of the method, it was felt that intensive investigation might lead to modifications that would make it a valuable tool [or the operators in industries that require precise information regarding the results secured from grinding equipment. A large number of size-distribution determinations below 200 mesh were required in connection with a particular research problem in fine grinding. The sedimentation balance was used in this investigation, and a technique was gradually developed that ultimately gave good results. A serious difficulty appeared early in the work. It was discovered that less material always settled on the sedimentation pan and more on the bottom of the containing jar than could be accounted for by calculation, and also that the material that settled to the bottom of the jar outside the edges of the pan was considerably finer than that on the pan. This segregation was so great that the distribution obtained for the finer sizes was obviously very much in error; material ground to about the degree of comminution of cement might have only 60 per cent of the calculated weight actually settling on the pan, and the error increased with the fine-

Further development of mechanical boring machines for hard and abrasive rocks will be effected by the development of more efficient rock cutting tools or the evolution of entirely new rock excavating principles. Presently the cutting tools suitable for extremely hard rocks and successfully and economically used with raise and tunnel boring machines are tungsten carbide insert big hole cutters. This paper explains the design, rock cutting principles, and actual boring operations to illustrate the capabilities and applications of tungsten carbide (TC) insert cutters. While the rate of borehole advance may fall short of the rapid excavating results achieved with soft rock boring machines, the cutter described in this paper may prove to be the most suitable tool in hard rock excavation for many years to come. DEFINITION OF HARD ROCK Existing bored excavations in hard abrasive rocks are proof of the economic application of new methods and mechanical rock boring in the mining industry. Most of the experience in cutting hard to extremely hard rocks has been gained in raise boring where relatively short and small diameter openings are bored. This poses a lesser risk regarding cutter cost than a long and large diameter tunnel and has therefore promoted the testing of various cutter products. Many types of rocks and geologic conditions were en- countered and actual test data was recorded in materials of up to 100,000 psi uniaxial compressive strength. To clarify the term hard to extremely hard, a 1970 interpretation of rock strength which was recently used is adopted and expanded in this paper.

Pebble grinding was used at Lake Shore Mines in 1949. A full description of experimental evidence and test plant results was published in 1952 1 and further operating details in 1954.2 In more recent years the term autogenous grinding has been coined and is now frequently seen in the technical literature. Autogenous crushing and/or grinding covers any grinding mill in which the larger of ore are made to grind the fine pieces; the crushing and grinding may be either dry or wet. This discussion deals only with wet autogenous grinding, and only in the fine grinding part of the circuit, i.e., from 6 mesh to 92 pct -325 mesh. The term pebble milling could apply to fine autogenous grinding in which the pebbles are made from the ore itself, or it could also refer to grinding with pebbles, such as flint pebbles, from a source outside the mine.

Introduction “A Western mine is a hole in the ground owned by a liar. . ." -Mark Twain THE CAPITAL INVESTMENT DECISION Decisions pertaining to a firm's proposed capital investments can have vital short- and long-term consequences on the organization's ability to compete, and even survive.Capita1 investment decisions, in general, center around two fundamental activities: (1) allocating capital funds to specific investment projects or assets, and (2) obtaining necessary financing in such proportion as to increase the overall value of the firm. In essence these activities or decisions describe the science of finance (as contrasted with economics). Fimnce has been described in general terms as the study of how a present, known amount of cash is converted into a future, perhaps unknown, amount of cash (Archer, Choate, and Racette, 1979). Fundamental to understanding the science of finance and the capital investment decision process in general are the basic concepts relating to cash flow transactions, time, income generation (markets), expected returns, and risk. The functions of finance may be segregated into three fundamental decisions which a firm must address: (1) the dividend decision, (2) the financing decision, and (3) the investment decision. These decisions are interdependent and their joint impact on the objective of the firm must be considered. This book primarily addresses the concepts and components associated with the investment and financing decisions as they affect the practice of mine valuation. Responsibilities of Management A primary assumption incorporated in this book is that the fundamental objective of any firm is to maximize its value, or wealth of its owners (stock- holders). Here, the term wealth refers to the total current market value of the firm's assets. In the case of corporations, the wealth or value is considered to be represented by the market price of the firm's common stock. The price of the firm's common stock obviously will be affected by its investment, financing, and dividend decisions. Consequently, an optimal combination of these three decisions should maximize the value of the firm to its stockholders. It is important to point out that wealth maximization is a more appropriate and inclusive goal for the firm than profit maximization. Indeed, there is a difference between the two objectives in most situations. For instance, a firm can always raise profits by selling stock and investing the proceeds in treasury bills or certificates of deposit. In 20 years of commercial development, nuclear reactors have demonstrated that they are a safe, dependable, and economical source of power. Operating experience with commercial power reactors has firmly established nuclear power as a practicable source of energy. For both boiling-water (BWR) and pressurized-water (PWR) reactors, performances to date have generally met design predictions. Furthermore, it has become possible to analyze and understand the nuclear, chemical, and physical behavior of this class of reactors. The United Kingdom has had similar success with gas-cooled reactors. The Experimental Boiling Water Reactor (EBWR), the first United States experimental power reactor, began operation in 1956. It proved to be capable of supplying 4500 kw (kilowatts) of power. This reactor was followed in 1957 by the Pressurized Water Reactor at Shippingport, Pa. It was the nation's first full-scale central-station nuclear power plant and the first in the world designed exclusively for the production of civilian electric power. The Shippingport reactor was originally designed to produce 60 megawatts (MW) of electricity, and it was increased to 100 MW in 1964. In 12 years of operation, this reactor generated over 4.5-million MW-hr of electricity in spite of many shutdowns for experimental alterations. By 1969, a total of 15 central-station nuclear power reactors were operable in the United States with an aggregate electrical capacity of over 4200 MW. Early in 1964, Jersey Central Power & Light Co. announced plans for constructing a 515-MW nuclear plant at Oyster Creek, N.J., to be built without government financial assistance. The company stated that a nuclear plant had been selected competitively with fossil fuel. Their economic analysis stated that the plant would generate electricity at less than 4 mills per kw-hr, competitive with coal at 200 per million Btu (British thermal units). Coal cost in 1964 for that region averaged 26.00 per million Btu. The Jersey Central report created wide interest in public-utility circles; nevertheless, no other nuclear plants were announced in 1964. However, in 1965, six nuclear plants were announced by utilities, followed by 26 in 1966, 29 in 1967, and 10 in 1968. By Sept. 30, 1969, 97 reactors were operable, being built, or planned. The cost of these, all committed by electric utilities, was estimated at about $12 billion. When constructed, they will have an electrical capacity of 72,000 MW. THE relative partial molar enthalpies of aluminum, gallium, and indium in liquid tin have been measured at 750°K by liquid-metal solution calorimetry. The measured heat effects and the calculated relative partial molar heats of solutions at infinite dilution are listed in Table I along with the relative heat contents of the solutes calculated from the data of Kelley. All of the values are referred to 750°K even though the calorimeter temperature fluctuated by +1°K during the entire series of experiments. The effect of this small temperature variation on the experimental values should be less than the experimental error. The limits of error given in Table I represent the standard deviations of all values from the mean. In no case was the experimental deviation greater than the listed error limits. The reported error estimates only apply to the estimated precision of experimental values and not to their accuracy. Systematic errors could be present in the calorimeter which would affect the absolute values given. Moreover the heat-content data used could also be in error and this would affect the end results. The relative enthalpies used were listed in Table I so that future corrections could be made if necessary. The relative partial molar heats of solutions of aluminum in liquid tin and dilute A1-Sn liquid solutions are large and positive. The value at infinite dilution is given in Table I. In the dilute-solution region investigated the relative partial molar heat of solution was a linear function of composition. A least-squares analysis of the data gave the following expression at 750°K: Atf^ = 6195 - 12,160 A:A1(cal/g-atom) where XA1 is the mole fraction of aluminum in the alloy. This can be compared with the data of Cohen, Howlett, and ever' who obtained the expression: 1SM = 6075 - 10,750 XM at 573°K Apparently both the partial molar heat of solution at infinite dilution and the concentration dependence increase with increasing temperature. Seven, 15 cm diameter, cores of gneissic granite, four containing induced fractures and three containing natural fractures all oriented normal to the core axis, were tested in an uniaxial compression mode over a range of 0 to 30 MPa. At given normal stress increments, over two or three loading and unloading cycles, the flowrates and changes in fracture aperture were measured. The induced fractures gave lower initial (at low stresses) and lower final flowrates (at maximum stress) than the natural fractures. Both types of fracture exhibited permanent fracture deformation between loading cycles as well as highly nonlinear, with distinct hystersis, loading and unloading flowrate-stress curves. A significant finding of this stud is the breakdown of the cubic law for fracture flow in induced fractures subjected to normal stresses greater than 20 MPa, with the breakdown occuring at much lower stresses in natural fractures.

Prior to discussing the metallurgy of sintered chromium borides, it is pertinent to outline some of the reasoning behind this investigation and the purposes underlying the work. This study was initiated as an aproach to the ubiquitous problem of a material for service at high temperatures under oxidizing atmospheres, and it was undertaken with a view to raising the 1500°F (816°C) ceiling to 2000°F (1093°C) or better. For the reason that no small, but rather a major, lifting of the high temperature working limit was being attempted, it was felt appropriate that a completely new approach be taken to this problem. A summary of the thinking behind this approach was published recently by Schwarzkopf.' In briefest terms, it was postulated that the following requirements could be set up for a material which would have high strength at high temperatures. 1. The individual crystals of the material must exhibit high strength interatomic bonds. This automatically leads to consideration of highly refractory materials, since their high energy requirements for melting are related to the strength of their atom-to-atom bonds. 2. On the polycrystalline basis, high boundary strength, superimposed on the above consideration, would also be a necessity. Since this implies control of boundary conditions, the powder metallurgy approach would hold considerable promise. Such materials actually had been fabricated for a number of years, and the cemented carbide is the best example of these. Here a highly refractory crystal was carefully bonded and resulted in a material of extremely high strength. That this strength was maintained at high temperature is exhibited by the ability of the cemented carbide tool to hold an edge for extended periods of heavy service. Nowick and Machlin2,3 have analytically approached the problem of creep and stress-rupture properties at high temperature and developed procedures whereby these properties can be approximately predicted from the room temperature physical constants of a material. The most important single constant in the provision of high temperature strength and creep resistance is shown to be the Modulus of Rigidity. On this basis, they proposed that a fertile field for investigation would be that of materials similar to cemented carbides, which have Moduli of Rigidity that are among the highest recorded. The cemented carbide, however, does not have good corrosion resistance in oxidizing atmospheres and without protection could not be used in gas turbines and similar pieces of equipment. It would be necessary then to attempt the fabrication of an allied material based upon a hard crystal which had good corrosion resistance as well. It was upon these premises that the subject study was undertaken and at an early stage it was sponsored by the U.S. Navy, Office of Naval Research. Since then, it has been carried on under contract with this agency. Chromium boride provided a logical starting point for such research, since it was relatively hard, exhibited good corrosion resistance, and, in addition, was commercially available, since it had found application in hard-surfacing alloys with iron and nickel. That chromium boride did not provide a material that met the ultimate aim of the study results from factors which are subsequently discussed. This, however, does not detract from the basis on which the study was conceived, nor from the value of reporting the results which follow. Chromium Boride While work on chromium boride proper dates back to Moissan,4 there has been a dearth of literature on borides since 1906. Subsequent to Moissan, principal investigators of chromium boride were Tucker and Moody,5 Wede-kind and Fetzer,6 du Jassoneix,7,8,9 and Andrieux." These investigators were generally limited to studies of methods of producing chromium boride and detennining its properties. Some study, however, was devoted to the chromium-boron system by du Jassoneix,7 who did this chemically and metal-lographically. This system is not amenable to normal methods of analysis by virtue of the refractory nature of the alloys involved, and the difficulties of measurement and control of temperature conditions in their range. Dilatometric apparatus is nonexistent for operation at these temperatures. Du Jassoneix made use of apparent chemical differences between two phases observed under the microscope and reported the existence of two definite compounds, namely: Cr3B2 and CrB. These two compounds, he reported, had quite similar chemical characteristics, but were sufficiently different to enable him to separate them. PROSPECTING for oil in Spain has been going on for many years but only in a very haphazard way and without adequate geological or technical advice. Shallow wells have been drilled in several provinces but, for the most part, they have been doomed to failure from the beginning because of unfavorable geological locations, inadequate drilling equipment inexperienced operators, or lack of sufficient capital. Geologists seem to agree that the most favorable chances for commercial fields are in the northern part of Spain where the petroliferous Triassic beds underlie Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. The prov-vinces of Santander, Burgos, Alava, Vizcaya, Navarra, and Guipuzcoa seem to offer the most promising localities. Several shallow wells have been drilled near Villamartin about 60 Km. northeast of Cadiz. One of these wells produced a small quantity of light oil but was never operated. The Spanish Government has been drilling on a well in this district for some time, using the Russian free-fall drilling system. The present depth is about 3000 meters. Several years ago the Compania Petrolera Franco-Espanola drilled a well to a depth of about 700 meters near Elorrio, province of Vizcaya. A diamond-core drill was used. The well was located on vertical Cretaceous beds near an igneous dike. The same company, in March, 1923, made a new location about 500 meters away from the first well and the same distance from the dike, in beds dipping about 80°, and is now drilling its No. 2 well. The last depth reported was about 200 meters.

In the past two decades, of the successive steps leading from iron ore to finished steel, the production of liquid steel and its preparation for the casting operation has probably undergone the most drastic evolution. The reason for this is the development of oxygen converters (top blown and later on bottom blown) and UHP arc furnaces which are replacing the conventional processes such as the open hearth and basic Bessemer processes. These new processes have been great advances, but it would certainly be quite hazardous to assert that the situation will remain the same for the coming decades. In fact, with the advent of continuous steelmaking a new generation of processes has now arrived. The research and development programme at IRSID on continuous an a steelmaking began ten years ago has progressed systematically in the following stages : First a comparison was made on a small pilot scale of various techniques : for example, refining in a runner by top or bottom blowing, pulverizing the metal stream by oxygen, using the mixing effect of a vortex, etc. but for various reasons these processes proved unsatisfactory and were abandoned in favour of a method using the so -called "emulsion refining".

UNLESS present in considerable proportion, metals of the precious-metal group-other than gold and silver-are not readily detected by the methods of fire assaying usually applied to ores and metallurgical products. Platinum, when present in small quantity, will ordinarily be reported as silver unless special methods of parting are used. Other elements occurring in the gold itself are all fluxed and slagged in the assay operation and if analyses are made on bullions the melting and slagging operations to which the bullion has been subjected may eliminate most of the associated elements. On the other hand, the analysis of precipi-tate from the cyanide treatment of gold ores may reveal the presence of many unexpected elements, such as tungsten and molybdenum. It is uncertain, however, whether many of the elements present in the pre-cipitate are derived from the ore gangue or from the gold itself. No very general survey of the distribution of metallic elements in gold seems to have been made. Rose and Newman,1 in connection with the composition of native gold, say in part as follows: Gold is occasionally found alloyed with copper and sometimes also with iron, bis-muth, lead, mercury, tin, antimony, palladium or rhodium. Rhodium gold from Mexico was found to be of the specific gravity 15.5 to 16.8 and contained 34 to 43 per cent of rhodium. The native alloy of palladium, gold, and silver from Porpez con-tains 85.98 per cent of gold, 9.85 per cent palladium and 4.17 per cent silver. Mal-donite, from Victoria, contains gold 64.5 per cent, bismuth 35.5 per cent (Louis). Dana' says that native gold is usually alloyed with silver in varying amounts, and that sometimes it also contains traces of copper and iron. Rare varieties contain palladium, rhodium and bismuth. Other authors, for instance Zeigler3 and Clark,4 give similar information. Most refer-ences on the subject agree that ordinary native golds contain, in common, the elements silver, copper and iron. After completion of the work of which this paper is a record, the conclusion is reached that all ordinary native gold probably does contain these elements and, although in certain cases other elements may be found to be present, that it is difficult to

INASMUCH as there has been a great deal of activity in this district recently, a paper of this kind should treat of all the various phases of mining, namely, prospecting, developing and operating. PROSPECTING Where ore is found it a depth of 100 ft. (30 m.) or more, the prospect work is done by churn drilling. Several makes of churn drills are used in this work, both steam- and gasoline-driven machines being used. The drilling is usually started with a 6-in. bit, and the size of the bit is reduced, if necessary, as the hole is advanced. It is general practice to drill from 100 to 400-ft. holes, but this is governed entirely by the location and formation of the ground. In drilling sheet ground, close spacing of drill holes is unnecessary, but in narrow orebodies, the holes are spaced from 15 to 50 ft. (4.6 to 15 m.) apart. Ten years ago, very few assays were kept of the drilling, but during recent years records have been kept very accurately, showing the location, elevation, assays, and also the vertical section of the hole. After the orebody is reached, cuttings are taken every 2 or 3 ft. (0.6 to 0.9 m.) samples being sometimes taken by pouring the water off the cuttings and taking a portion of the coarse material for assay. It has been found, however, that very often the sludge material poured off with the water contains high mineral values. To overcome this, cuttings from each 2 or 3 ft. are put in a container and after the water is evaporated, sample for assay is taken by means of Jones samplers. Permanent records of cuttings showing various formations are kept in glass jars or glued on large cards. Drilling at present is costing from $1.25 to $1.50 per foot. In pre-war times, the drilling costs ran from 75c to $1 per foot.
