THE mine and mill of the Climax Molybdenum Co. are at Climax, Colorado. Climax is on Fremont pass directly on the Continental Divide, at an elevation of 11,400 feet. DESCRIPTION OF ORE The Climax ore-bearing rock is essentially an altered and highly silicified granite, fully half of the gangue being quartz. Molybdenite is the only mineral of economic consequence and most of it is intimately associated with quartz in the form of fine veinlets and stringers. Other minerals are molybdite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. While the molybdite may be readily extracted by hydrometallurgical methods, its content is too low to make such operations profitable. The pyrite content ranges from 2 to 5 per cent and that of the chalcopyrite from 0.03 to 0.05 per cent. There is not enough copper to make its recovery attractive and one of the metallurgical problems is the elimination of it and the pyrite from the product. On account of the dose association of the molybdenite with the quartz and the necessity of eliminating the pyrite and chalcopyrite from the final product, fine grinding followed by flotation is the only feasible method of concentration. HISTORY Construction of the first milling unit was started in 1917 and it was operated during parts of 1918 and 1919. In the postwar years, there was almost no demand for the product and production was at a standstill until 1924. The Company's research campaign to develop the use of the metal began to show results in that year. From 1926 to 1932 production ranged from 500 to 1200 tons per day. In 1931 an additional mill section was built and production was gradually increased until in 1934 and' 1935 about 3000 to 4000 tons was milled per day. This tonnage overtaxed the milling facilities, and as the demand for molybdenum was growing constantly, additional milling equipment was needed. In 1936 and 1937 another crushing plant, six additional mill sections and the necessary auxiliary plants were constructed and brought into operation. This plant was designed to mill 10,000 tons per day, but it was not long before 12,500 tons was being treated during periods of peak demands. During the summer of 1941, to meet defense needs, the mill has been required to treat 15,500 tons per day. This has been accomplished with little plant expansion and at no loss in recovery, as will be described later. To increase capacity still further, one more primary section is now being built. This will bring capacity to 18,000 tons per day, which can be stretched to 20,000 tons at a small sacrifice in recovery. CRUSHING There are two crushing plants: No. I, of 5000 tons capacity (flowsheet in Fig. 1) and No. 2, of 15,000 tons capacity (Fig. 2).

A simplification of the method of Hurst and McCarty for conducting potentiometric model studies by the single probe method is presented along with experimentally determined invasion patterns for certain idealized flow problems. The analytical solution for one class of these problems is given. Finally, a general description is given of a newly developed instrument which permits direct mapping of flow lines and determination of transit times in potentiometric-model studies. Introduction The object of this paper is to present: I. A simplification of the method of Hurst and McCarty for conducting poten-tiometric-model studies of oil and gas reservoirs by the single probe method. 2. Results of a series of studies of certain idealized flow problems and the general conclusions to be drawn therefrom. 3. A description of a new instrument, the Chronocartograph, which greatly reduces the labor and time required for conducting potentiometric-model studies. Certain general conclusions may be drawn as results of the investigation of the idealized flow problems. They are: I. Injection and extraction areas should be separated by as great a distance as conditions permit since, in general, the recovery prior to first breakthrough tends to vary as the square of this distance. 2. Little advantage is to be gained by use of more than eight injection wells or groups of injection wells for the case of circular productive limits. 3. Elongated shapes of productive limits are best exploited by injection on the extended major axis only, with a line of extraction wells lying on the major axis. 4. The use of peripheral injection wells for elongated shapes is permissible, if necessary, but requires extension of the line of extraction wells. The exploitation of an oil or gas field is effected either by the expansion of the gas and oil, or by their displacement by another fluid. Both methods may be used simultaneously. When the displacement of the oil or gas is the controlling factor there arises the problem of mapping the progress of the boundary between the fluid in place and the displacing fluid. This problem is of particular interest in the operation of a cycling project in a gas-condensate field, where the wet gas is produced from one or more wells, commonly called "extraction wells.'' This wet gas is taken into a processing plant where the condensate is removed. The remaining "dry" gas is injected back into the field through one or more wells, called "injection wells," both to conserve the gas for future use and also to maintain the pressure in the field. In an operation of this type it is essential to anticipate the manner in which the dry gas will spread through the field, because the ultimate recovery of the wet gas depends

The problem of scrap is probably of greater importance in the pro duction of gold, silver and other precious metal alloys than is the case for base metals and alloys. Remelting of gold and silver scrap in the shop is always a costly process because it involves losses by oxidation of thc base metals in the alloy with a consequent increase in the percentage of precious metal. This is most marked in the case of alloys containing the low-boiling and easily oxidized metals zinc and cadmium. Since it is not generally feasible to assay every shop remelt it follows that the possibilities of lost values arc large. So-called rolled gold and silver plate is made by soldering or welding the precious metal alloys onto base metal. Such plate when defective must be sent to the refinery to recover the gold and silver values, thereby involving additional expense in the form of refining charges. It is obvious therefore that gold and silver alloy scrap is an important item in manufacturing cost and must be reduced to a minimum. The amount of scrap resulting from poor metal will depend on a number of factors in the manufacturing operations, not least among which is the melting and casting practice. The notes which follow are a summary of experiments performed at various times to determine what variables in melting and casting are influential in the production of sound alloys. Metals Used in Alloying Pure gold, that is, gold of 24-kt. value is very much too soft for jewelry purposes and it is therefore always alloyed with other metals to increase its hardness and resistance to wear. For the same reason pure silver is seldom used alone but is alloyed with copper, the standard alloy being sterling silver which contains 92.5 per cent. silver and 7.5 per cent. copper. The metals commonly used for alloying gold are silver, coppcr, nickel and zinc. In addition to hardening the gold and producing alloys of different karat values the use of these metals makes possible the production of gold alloys of various colors such as yellow, red, green and white. The Liberty tunnels extend through a very steep hill in Pittsburgh (locally called Mount Washington) for a distance of slightly over a mile. The two tunnels parallel each other and are 59 ft. apart, center to center (Fig. 1) They are for vehicular traffic, and in each there is ample space for two lines of vehicles. Northbound traffic, toward downtown Pitts- burgh, is confined to the east tunnel and southbound traffic to the west tunnel. Tar sand deposits in the state of Utah contain more than 25 billion bbl of in-place bitumen. Although 30 times smaller than the well-known Athabasca tar sands, Utah tar sands do represent a significant domestic energy resource comparable to the national crude oil reserves (31.3 billion bbl). Based upon a detailed analysis of the physical and chemical properties of both the bitumen and the sand, a hot-water separation process for Utah tar sands is currently being developed in our laboratories at the University of Utah. This process involves intense agitation of the tar sand in a hot caustic solution and subsequent separation of the bitumen by a modified froth flotation technique. Experimental results with an Asphalt Ridge, Utah, tar sand sample indicated that percent solids and caustic concentration were the two most important variables controlling the performance of the digestion stage. These variables were identified by means of an experimental factorial design, in which coefficients of separation greater than 0.90 were realized. Although preliminary in nature, the experimental evidence gathered in this investigation seems to indicate that a hot-water separation process for Utah tar sands would allow for the efficient utilization of this important energy resource.

Raphael PUmpelly, who became a member of the Institute in 1871, the year of its organization, and retained his membership for a long period, died at his home in Newport, R. I., Aug. 10, 1923. He is survived by a son, Raphael, Jr., and by two daughters, one of whom is the wife of Prof. Henry L. Smyth, of Harvard. Doctor Pumpelly was born in Oswego, N. Y., in 1835. He studied sciences and mining engineering in Paris and at Freiberg, later taking his Doctor's degree at Princeton. He was Professor of Mining at Harvard from 1866 to 1873. Doctor Pumpelly made geological explorations in many lands. In 1861-63, he conducted a scientific exploration for the Japanese government, and for two years thereafter carried on researches in central, western, and northern China and Mongolia. In 1864-65, he undertook a voyage of exploration across the Gobi desert, returning to Europe through Siberia. He was State Geologist of Michigan from 1869 to 1871; Director of the Missouri Geological Survey from 1871 to 1873; and Chief of Division, U. S. Geological Survey, directing the mineral industries division of the tenth census. He organized and directed the Northern Transcontinental Survey, 1881-84; directed the explorations inaugurating the iron ore industry of most of the ranges of Michigan and Western Ontario, 1897-1901; initiated and directed a physical-geographical and archeo-logical exploration of Central Asia under the auspices of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, 19034.2.

SINCE Honda and Murakami1 in 1918 proposed their constitutional diagram of the carbon-free iron-tungsten system, considerable effort has been expended by several investigators in attempts to define more positively the structural features of the alloys. The existence of an intermediate phase corresponding to the formula Fe3W2 (68.7 per cent W) was proposed from evidence of a purely metallographic nature by one of the present authors2 in 1926. Since that time the identity of this phase has been confirmed by Arnfelt3 and by Takeda,4 both of whom employed X-ray methods as well as the microscope and the chemical analysis of isolated microconstituents. According to Arnfelt, Fe3W2, as crystallized from the iron-rich melts at a temperature above 1450'C., contains by analysis 68.7 per cent W. The lattice of this phase is characterized by trigonal symmetry. Arnfelt, moreover, proposed a second intermediate phase formed at some temperature between 1450° and 1000° C. by a peritectoid reaction involving Fe3W2 and the iron-rich solid solution. A melt containing 25 per cent W was cooled to 1000° C. and heated for. 100 hr. The precipitated tungsten-rich constituent was separated and found by analysis to contain 62.6 per cent W. This composition agrees closely with that represented by the formula Fe2W (62.2 per cent W). Diffraction patterns from the concentrated precipitate showed a hexagonal unit cell. Takeda confirmed the data of Arnfelt regarding Fe3W2 but was unable to detect Arnfelt's second intermediate phase. While Takeda. failed to describe in detail the treatments employed, he stated that in alloys containing 40 per cent W which were quenched after heating at various temperatures between 1200° and 1450° C., no evidence of the second phase (Fe2W) was observed either in the microstructure or in the diffraction patterns of isolated residues. He therefore considered the existence of this low-temperature hexagonal compound as disproved.

The objective of this paper is to identify the components of income above that necessary to keep a mine in production and relate those components to the profits of a mining firm. This is a discussion of "Economic Rent". Economic rent is the payment to the factors of production -- capital, labour, entreprenuer and the owner of the mineral deposit -- above the minimum necessary to keep all of these factors cooperating in the production of minerals from a particular deposit. THE SOURCE OF ECONOMIC RENT IN THE MINING INDUSTRY In the mining business each mine has a unique cost of production unrelated to any other mine. The cost of production is developed from many factors such as the technical characteristics of the deposit: depth of deposit, depth of overburden, areal extent, and type of deposit. Furthermore, there are locational factors which also alter cost of production. For example, identical mineral deposits located in Zambia or in the southwest U.S.A. would have different capital and operating costs. These differences occur because of different qualities of labour, ease of acquisition of operating supplies or investment capital and other similar factors. To explain the source of rent, we shall use ideas developed by Alfred Marshall and Kenneth Boulding. Suppose a meteorite with special qualities exploded over earth and sent showers of small meteorites to the ground in various places. At some point in time, people learned of the special qualities of these meteorites and a demand arose and one mine was started. Suppose further that the cost of production to produce these meteorites was different for each deposit. Probably the lowest unit cost mine would commence production because if a higher unit cost mine started-up, eventually someone would discover a deposit that had a lower unit cost of production. The lower unit cost mine would take over the market and the high unit cost mine would cease production. The cost curve for the first mine would look like the following Figure 1. [ ] The output for the first mine is on the horizontal axis with the cost per ton on the vertical axis. The curve labelled AC I is the average total cost of production over the range of possible production that could occur at the property. The total costs are composed of variable costs, which are dependent on output and fixed costs, which are dependent on time. For example, the cost of operating supplies would be a variable cost and normal profit would be a fixed cost.1 The opportunity cost of the investment would also be part of the fixed costs. In our example, all factors of production, are receiving the minimum necessary payment that will keep the mine operating. The average total cost curve is U-shaped because at zero output, the meteorite mine has no variable costs, only fixed costs which, on a unit basis, obviously are very high. THE thermal conductivity of aluminum alloys is of considerable indus-trial importance. This is particularly true in such applications as inter-nal-combustion engines where one of the principal reasons for the use of these alloys is their relatively higher thermal conductivity. In spite of this, relatively few data are available on this property of aluminum alloys. The reason is quite apparent to anyone concerned with the experimental determination of coefficients of thermal conductivity. This determina-tion, in theory so simple, is extraordinarily difficult if any high degree of precision is desired. Fortunately, some knowledge of the relationship between thermal and electrical conductivity has permitted the use of the latter physical property in deducing the relative approximate-values of the thermal conductivities of metals. This fundamental relationship, first enunciated by Wiedemann and Franz1 as applying to metallic elements and later shown by Lorenz to be applicable to alloys within a single metallic system, has been of service in the industrial application of metals. The electrical conductivity of metals is easily determined with a high degree of precision. It is, therefore, quite desirable that the relationship between electrical and thermal characteristics be determined with the greatest possible precision. This paper presents data on the electrical and thermal conductivities of a number of aluminum alloys of industrial importance.

BELL,* Montreal, Canada (written discussion?).-Mr. Hardinge's "hammer" theory is, I believe, a sound one; but, unfortunately, at the very place in the Hardinge mill where there should ,be a large number of small "hammers," there is room for only a very few. The results in Mr. Van Winkle's paper seem to indicate that the practical development of the theory can best be accomplished by stage crushing, using cylindrical mills. It would be very interesting to know if any stage-crushing experiments have been made at Inspiration with Marry mills. Mr: H. Kenyon Burch says:1 "The Marcy mill also proved to be a most excellent intermediate crusher, handling as high as 800 tons of 3-in. feed and under, to pass an 8-mesh screen without return of oversize." It seems reasonable to suppose that a large part of this output would be a finished- product; consequently, if it were possible to send the oversize from two of the primary mills to one secondary mill using balls of small diameter, a considerable saving in power might be realized, provided it were not necessary greatly to enlarge the secondary mill. It does not seem reasonable to suppose that fine material can he crushed as quickly or as efficiently in a primary ball-mill as in a re-crushing mill especially designed for that work. Experimental data, of course, are essential in deciding questions of this kind.

THE relative temperature distribution within a coke oven and among the ovens in a battery can be obtained automatically for the operator's guidance by sighting a total-radiation pyrometer on the face of the coke as it is pushed out, and recording the surface temperature. Keeping the instrument clean and keeping its view of the coke unobstructed by smoke and dust are the principal problems. Typical records from three plants are presented in this paper, showing that the temperature patterns are reproducible. DEVELOPMENT OF METHOD The method of coke pyrometry described in this paper was introduced in 1936 by E. A. Lee, then Assistant Superintendent, now Superintendent, of the Coke Plant at Lorain Works, National Tube Co., Lorain, Ohio. At the request of the Coke Committee of the United States Steel Corporation, the Research Laboratory of the Corporation undertook to adapt the method to the somewhat different conditions met with at the Gary Works of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, Gary, Ind., and at the Clairton Works of the same Corporation at Clairton, Pa. This work was done in cooperation with the Leeds and Northrup Co. of Philadelphia and later with the Brown Instrument Co. Division of Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co., Philadelphia. We of the Research Laboratory wish to express our appreciation of the courtesies extended by Mr. Lee, by A. N. Cole, Superintendent of the Gary coke plant, and by D. P. Finney, Assistant General Superintendent in charge of coke-plant operations at Clairton. We are also indebted to the instrument companies for the loan of a part of the equipment. At Gary and Clairton the instruments were installed and various experiments were made by J. W. Bain, of the Research Laboratory of the United States Steel Corporation. PYROMETRY OF COKE The coke inside a by-product oven is almost completely inaccessible to pyrometric instruments. The temperature in the walls can conceivably be measured with thermocouples, but the atmosphere is usually strongly reducing, a condition well known to be destructive to the accuracy of the customary high-temperature couples. In some plants, periodic readings are taken with an optical pyrometer sighted into the top of the combustion flues. This is a useful measure for safety and general control, as it tends to prevent the damage that would result from overheating of the ovens. It does not, however, tell much about the temperature of the coke itself, because of the continually changing gradient in the wall between the coke and the combustion chamber. The best indication of the temperature of the coke itself must therefore be obtained by observation of the product as it is pushed out of the oven. The human eye is very sensitive to variations in brightness of a surface, and particularly to differences in brightness over a continuous hot surface.

Several investigators, mainly concerned with the mechanical properties of the alloys, have studied the so-called aluminum bronzes after various quenching and reheating treatments. Of these works, perhaps the most complete is that of Bouldoires, who studied changes of length, electrical conductivity, thermoelectric force, hardness and micro-structure on tempering quenched alloys containing 5 to 20 per cent of aluminum, although the work of Carpenter and Edwards,² Curry13 Greenwood,4 Braesco,5 Matsuda,67 Grard8 and others has added much to our knowledge of the changes occurring during tempering. The so-called acicular ß decomposes on tempering at temperatures between 350" C. and the eutectoid, giving rise to a Widmanstätten structure of a needles in a matrix of 6 or fine a + 6, associated with an increase in hardness and almost complete loss of ductility. Matsuda studied the eutectoid transformation by means of dilatation and electrical conductivity measurements during cooling at different rates. He found that on cooling at the rate of 10" C. per minute there was a decrease in electrical resistance and in length instead of the usual increase which occurred with slow rates of cooling. On tempering the rapidly cooled samples, the increase commenced at about 400" C. and at 520" C. the resistance and length had reached the equilibrium values. These peculiarities he accounted for as being due to a transitional phase ß' being formed, ß' having an electrical resistance and volume less than either ß or a + 6. In the pumping of sands, slurries and slimes, practices developed over the years are the real keystones of 'successful operation. These practices are necessarily based on modifications of familiar theories. Practical methods used in the solution of problems involving the pumping of materials are set forth in the following discussion. Basic Requirements To pump sands and slurries economically, a few basic requirements must be met by the pumping system as a whole. A pipe-line velocity must be established that will move the fluid mixture throughout the entire system without any possibility of the solids settling out. To accomplish this, the velocity of flow must be slightly in excess of the critical velocity of the mixture. The critical velocity of a mixture varies from 3 ft. per sec. to 18 ft. per sec., depending on the screen analysis, concentration, and specific gravity of the solids in the mixture. Most tailings are pumped at a minimum velocity of 4 ft. per sec. if they include slimes, whereas the pipe lines of sand and gravel dredges require velocities as high as 18 ft. per second. A number of articles have been written on the determination of the minimum velocities required to maintain solids in suspension. Studies have also been made on the friction and pumping heads developed when handling solids in suspension.1-4 Our experience so far has shown that, within the normal operating limits of a pumping system, the friction factor follows more nearly the basis described by Howard,' who says, among his conclusions: "... values of f (friction factor) . . . will decrease with an increase in velocity." This conclusion is borne out by our actual experience. When the velocity in a pipe line is not sufficient to keep the solids in suspension, the total friction head' is greater than when the velocity is increased to a point where the solids are in suspension. A slight increase in the volume of feed to the pump and a slight increase in the pump speed are usually all that is necessary to put the system in balance. Maintaining Constant Volume Within reasonable limits, the volume of mixture to be handled through a pipe line should be held constant, so that the required velocity will be provided at all times. There are several ways in which this can be accomplished. The commonest is to provide a sump of sufficient capacity to take care of slight surges in the volume of mixture being fed to the pumping systen]. This sump, however, should not be as large as a settling chamber. The use of a float-controlled, fresh-water make-up valve in a sump will guarantee a constant volume. THE outstanding fact in connection with dust disease in the United States at present is the growing recognition of its seriousness by state officials and by the more progressive operators of mining, metallurgical and allied industrial plants. The same may perhaps be said of labor in some of its better organized centers, but the average independent non-union workman continues, .as of yore, to suffer the toll of disability and even of death from dust inhalation without realization of the source of his ill-being. Progress in the betterment of the handling of sufferers from dust disease and of the conditions creating dust hazards in mining and allied industries is pursuing a course similar to that of the now widespread campaign against accidents, in which the risk is more obvious, more severe, and was naturally recognized sooner. The coming on of dust disease is generally relatively slow and its immediate effects not infre-quently masked by or attributed to other diseases. Marked exceptions to this general rule have occurred in districts where the dust is particularly pernicious, such as the Rand and Joplin; yet such exceptions, unhappy in themselves, opened the eyes of medical men, and of those in other localities charged with the responsibility for the welfare of industry, to the much more widespread if less spectacular hazard existing from the inhalation of dust in all rock-excavating operations and all industrial operations creating inorganic dust, whether it be crushing and grinding, sand-blast-ing, granite-cutting, or what not. Advancement to date in the United States in prevention and treat-ment has been slow, yet the record shows that quantitative methods for determining the degree of hazard and means for decreasing it were being developed as far back as 25 years ago; and that more rapid progress may be looked for from now on. Tile National Research Council announces further appointments to National Research Fellowships in physics and chemistry. The object of the National Research Council in maintaining a system of research fellowships is to promote fundamental research in physics and chemistry primarily in educational institutions in the United States. Fellowships are awarded to persons who have demonstrated a high order of ability in research for the purpose of enabling them to conduct investigations at educational institutions which make adequate provisions for research: in physics and chemistry. The new appointments are as follows: In Chemistry.-Warren C. Vosburgh, of New York City, B. S. Union College, 1914, A. M. Union College, 1916, Ph. D. Columbia University, 1919. Research assistant to the Professor of Chemistry at Columbia University for the past six months. George Scatchard, of New York City, A. B. Amherst College, 1913, Ph. D. Colt tibia University, 1917. THE purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of agitation upon the flotation of chal-cocite. It is believed that the concentration of collector which is required to produce a water-repellent surface upon the mineral is determined among other things by the rate of collector diffusion through an impeding film of more or less stagnant fluid. Its thickness depends upon the intensity of agitation. In the first part of this study a method is developed for determining the thickness of the fluid film upon a polished surface of synthetic chalcocite. The film thickness is then determined as precisely as possible under three readily reproducible condi-tions of agitation intensity. These determinations serve as a quantitative evaluation of agitation. In Part 2 it is demonstrated that in solutions of lime at PH 10.5 and in the absence of air or dissolved oxygen the concentration of collector required to develop water-repellency upon the surface in any given time is a function of the fluid film thickness, and that after about 10 min the relation becomes linear. This points to the possibility that the collector ions may be involved in a diffusional process through the fluid film. In Part 3 it is shown that where air is present more collector is required to produce water-repellency than for the case in which air is excluded. Next, it is shown that for the latter case the most minute amount of sodium sulphide suffices to preclude development of water-repellency. Both oxygen and sulphide are in a sense, therefore, depres- sants for chalcocite in a lime solution at PH 10.5. When oxygen and sulphide are present simultaneously there is a region of minimum critical collector concentration for water-repellency which is very markedly lower than the concentration where oxygen alone or where sulphide alone is present. Moreover, this minimum appears to be identical with the collector concentration which is required where sulphide and oxygen are both excluded. This would appear to indicate that in certain ranges of concentration of oxygen and sulphide, each cancels the effect of the other. The range of concentration of solution for this effect in solutions saturated with oxygen is a function of the agitation intensity. Thus we are led to believe that a chemical reaction involving sulphide and oxygen occurs at the surface of the chalcocite. Part 4 of this study is a further development of this idea and some of its consequences from an electrochemical standpoint, while in Part 5 the disappearance of sulphide from pulps of several minerals is noted with an indication that both dissolved oxygen and the mineral are necessary, the reaction being catalytic or pseudocatalytic. Part 1. Determination of Fluid Film Thickness The Fluid Film Concept: The hindrance to the diffusion of collector to the surface of the chalcocite is a barrier of stagnant fluid in the vicinity of the surface. It is the same barrier that limits the rate of transfer of heat, the rate of solution of dissolving crystals, or any of the other rates pertaining to chemical engineering unit operations in which the film resistance to diffusion plays a principal role.' Fluid films are present upon the surface to an extent which varies with the geometry and intensity of agitation. They result from the fact that in the region within the fluid near a surface, motion is entirely parallel to it. From the standpoint of transfer to or away from the interface the effect is as though the fluid were stagnant. Outside of the film, movement of the fluid may be streamline or turbu-

SODIUM sulfide is used extensively to increase the recovery of oxidized copper and lead minerals by flotation, particularly when using xanthates as collectors. It is generally assumed that the sodium sulfide converts a film of the oxidized mineral to the sulfide, and that the xanthate, while not a very effective collector for the oxidized minerals, is a good collector for the sulfide. On the other hand, Taggart and his collaborators' claim that unless sulfide minerals are oxidized they cannot adsorb xanthates and do not float. Gaudin2 states that amyl xanthate, used in conjunction with sodium sulfide, gives better results than ethyl xanthate. Rabone3 and Mayer-Schranz4 agree that excess of sulfide functions as a depressant. Owing to the greater solubilities of the oxidized minerals than of the sulfides, the consumption of sodium sulfide is greater than that of most other flotation reagents, up to 10 lb. per ton of ore being used in some plants. Luyken and Bierbrauer5 recommend a water washing to remove soluble heavy metal salts; by this means sulfide consumption may be reduced. It was desirable to determine the limits of the sulfide concentrations between which contact is possible at surfaces of anglesite and cerussite in xanthate solutions. Similar determinations were desirable for the sulfide minerals with which the oxidized minerals are usually associated, since conditions should be chosen, if possible, so that the two types of mineral will float together. Because of the formation, especially in acid solutions, of hydrogen sulfide and of the hydrosulfide ion (HS-), the permissible limits of sulfide addition are obviously dependent upon the pH value. Sphalerite responds to ethyl xanthate only in the presence of an activator; for example, copper sulfate. It was necessary, therefore, to determine whether sodium sulfide interferes with the activation of sphalerite by copper sulfate. The combined effect of sulfide and copper sulfate was determined also for galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite.
