From their study of the anisotropy of grain boundary mobility in aluminum, the authors conclude that tilt boundaries have a higher mobility than twist boundaries because the atomic misfit at the pure-twist boundary is relatively small compared to the misfit at a tilt boundary for a given amount of misorientation. If this is true, then one would expect a twist boundary to have a lower grain boundary energy than the corresponding tilt boundary. Fig. 6, taken from the work of Gjostein and Rhines,10 shows that this is indeed the case for [001]-cu tilt and twist boundaries in the high-angle region, thus lending support to the authors' conclusion.

IN the process of making steel in the open-hearth furnace the refining of the metal during the working period of the heat is largely accomplished through the agency of the slag. From the birth of the process until the present day steelmakers have recognized the importance of the slag in determining the composition of the metal and the quality of the product. The general relationships between slag composition and metal analysis have long been known, at least in a qualitative or approximate fashion. For examples, the iron oxide content of the slag is higher on lower carbon heats; the more basic slags are higher in iron oxide for a given carbon content; certain amounts of iron oxide and lime are required for phos-phorus removal and a high lime-silica ratio is needed if the sulphur content of the metal is to be diminished. In recent years a number of quantita-tive relationships involving these and other variables have been developed through plant and laboratory studies by numerous investigators in this country and abroad. The direct comparison of laboratory and open-hearth data involves the question of the degree to which each approaches the conditions of chemical equilibrium, a question which, from the open-hearth standpoint, we are scarcely yet in position to answer. And, although a considerable body of dependable equilibrium data has been obtained in the laboratory, this work has not yet been extended to cover the ranges of slag composi-tion encountered in basic open-hearth practice. In the present study we shall not attempt to draw comparisons between data from the two sources; nor do we attempt to draw conclusions as to the approach to chemical equilibrium in the open-hearth furnace. Many of the operating variables that are likely to be erratic or unrecorded during the earlier stages of the heat become more consistent and are more readily subject to observation and control during later stages. For example, undigested lime or ore gradually goes into solution, the rate of carbon drop levels off, and the temperature of the metal is brought under control. THE United Eastern Mining Co.'s property is located in the Oatman, Gold Roads mining district of Mohave County, Ariz. The mine and mill are some 26 mi. (41.8 km.) southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway connection. The ore consists of a mixture of calcite and quartz with some andesite. The values, which are mainly gold, alloyed with approximately 34 per cent., by weight, of silver, are extremely fine so that fine grinding is a most important factor in extraction. The milling process, briefly, consists of single-stage, coarse-crushing, two-stage ball milling in cyanide solution, followed by combined mechanical and air agitation, and by straight counter-current decantation. The Merrill zinc-dust precipitation method is used to recover the values, and is preceded by the Crowe vacuum treatment of the solution. The most notable features of the plant are the absence of filters, and the use of short peb mills loaded with steel balls, for fine grinding. As originally designed, the capacity of the mill was to be 200 tons per day, although the grinding end was to be capable of handling double that amount. By adding extra agitators and thickeners and by some alterations to the grinding end, the daily capacity has been raised to 285 tons. This, it is hoped, may be increased to 300 tons during the warm months of the present year. This paper describes the fluo-solids roaster and acid plants at the new 40,000-TPY Trepca electrolytic zinc plant. The electrolytic zinc plant units were constructed to the design of Singmaster and Breyer, New York and began operation in mid-1967. The fluo-solids roaster plant, constructed according to the design of Dorr-Oliver, Paris, includes concentrate handling and storage facilities; two independent concentrate roasting circuits, each with a 110 to 155 TPD fluo-solids roaster; waste heat boilers; cyclones; electrostatic precipitators; calcine coolers; and calcine conveyors. The acid plant uses the "Petersen system" contact process. The plant has one acid circuit with a capacity of 230 tons of monohydrate per day. Gases for the acid plant are obtained from roasting zinc concentrates. When the roaster plant is operating at maximum capacity, excess SO2 is used in two other Petersen System circuits in the near vicinity.

ALTHOUGH the occurrence of a readily visible tarnish on the stress-corrosion fracture surfaces of titanium alloys tested in oxygenated nitrogen tetrox-ide solutions has been reported,' the possibility that the formation of this tarnish is a requirement for cracking to proceed does not appear to have been considered. It has been proposed that failure occurs in this system as a result of some electrochemical-mechanical process.2 However, recent studies3-6 of the stress-corrosion cracking of a brass in certain ammoniacal solutions, which also cause visible tarnishing, have led to the view that failure occurs by the repeated formation and fracture of a brittle surface film of cuprous oxide. The purpose of this note is to point out the similarities which exist between the tarnish which forms on a brass and that found on titanium alloys failed in nitrogen tetroxide, and to suggest, by analogy, that a similar tarnish-rupture mechanism may be operative in the latter case. The titanium alloy selected for the present study contained 5.2 pct Al, 2.5 pct Sn, 0.025 pct C, 0.16 pct Fe, 0.014 pct N, 0.012 pct H, 0.07 pct 0, and 0.002 pct Mn by weight. Vacuum-annealed alloy strips measuring 4 by 0.25 by 0.04 in. were used to prepare self-stressed test specimens. Each specimen was made from two strips by bending the end portions and spot welding them together to produce curved sections of uniform bending stress. (The exact details of preparing such specimens have been described by Lisagor el al.7) The curvature in the strips determines the ma-magnitude of the outer fiber stress, which in the present specimens was 100,000 psi (yield stress = 120,000 psi). The specimen surface in the spot-welded end regions was shot-peened to induce compressive stresses and thereby eliminate the possibility of stress-corrosion cracking in these regions. The test environment was nitrogen tetroxide, initially containing 99.5 pct N2O4, 0.1 pct H2O, and 0.08 pct C1, through which oxygen had been bubbled for 30 min. During testing the tetroxide was subject to an oxygen pressure of 250 psi. The duration of the test was 96 hr, and during this time stress-corrosion cracks propagated through some 50 pct of the thickness of the specimens. After testing, the tarnish was liberated from the fracture surface by immersion in a methanol-5 pct bromine solution, and then examined by electron dif- fraction and transmission electron microscopy using a JEM-7 electron microscope. The possibility that the bromine solution had affected the structure of the tarnish was investigated by an "in silu" examination of the stress-corrosion fracture surface using a reflection electron diffraction attachment designed for handling bulk specimens. Typical areas of the tarnish liberated by the me-thanol-bromine solution are shown in Fig. 1. Fig. l(a) reveals that the tarnish consists of individual platelets, and from Fig. l(b) it can be seen that the platelets are joined together to form a semicontinuous film, the boundaries of the titanium substrate grains being retained in the tarnish. Electron-diffraction patterns taken from these areas exhibited diffraction spots typical of a monocrystal. The diffraction pattern shown in Fig. 2 was taken from the central area in Fig. l(n). Monocrystal patterns obtained from areas containing numerous individual platelets can only be explained by assuming that their growth is governed by the titanium substrate (i.e., their growth is epitaxial). In other areas, the tarnish had folded over or became mechanically damaged, and these areas gave diffraction patterns consisting of "spotted" rings, enabling interplanar spacings of the tarnish lattice to be determined. During the autumn of 1891, several heavy blasts (each throwing down some 3000 tons of ore) were made on what is known as the Theall side of these mines. Immediately after one of these blasts, the writer found that at least one-third of the ore was largely impregnated with pyrites, and besides this, fully 15 per cent. of the entire blast was composed of irregular lumps of magnetic pyrites. This was a revelation wholly unexpected, as previous examinations by many experts had failed to disclose any such quantity of sulphury ore. Over the center of the Theall tunnel there suddenly appeared a perfect keystone, as it were, of pyrites, 3 feet wide at the arch of the tunnel, 13 feet ride at the top, and 20 feet high. This keystone pinched out in February, 1892; but in that month large blocks of pyrites were more plentiful on or near the western wall, and these deposits extended the entire height of the workings, some 43 feet. The second blast in November, in the face and over, and on each side of the tunnel, was far more surprising. The whole cross-section it exposed was thickly interspersed with layers of magnetic pyrites, ranging in thickness from 10 to 24 inches, and quite irregular in form, while all of the ore carried much more than the usual amount of sulphur in the non-magnetic pyrite. One hundred and fifty-five tons from a portion of this breast (western side), showed the following composition upon sampling and analysis: Per cent. As a result of studies distributed over the earth- including ocean basins as well as continents- some tectonists recognize four dominant structural trends: 1) northwest; 2) northeast; 3) nearly east- west, or equatorial; and 4) nearly north-south, or meridional. Baker' proposed a theory to account for these trends and Sonder5 called their world-wide arrangement the regmatic shear pattern. Moody and Hill6 proposed a much more complicated shear network which, although fascinating and perhaps ultimately useful, will not be followed here. In a recent review of deformation within the Cordillera, Wisser7 mentioned the four fundamental directions. The fact that many geologists deny the existence of the regmatic shear pattern implies that the fundamental structures are far from obvious. It may mean, also, that some geologists are not accustomed to examine regional and world maps analytically. The maps require much study, and certain features, should be isolated on overlays. Even so, with the present limited knowledge, uncertainties remain. The following analysis is a qualitative experiment, subject to change as information accumulates, and should be supplemented by the western sheet of the Tectonic Map of the United States.8

J. R. Lane (Metals Research Laboratory, Washington)—A new type of deformation called "kinking" has recently been described. Is there any relation between the "rumpling" described in this paper and "kinking?" D. C. Jillson (author's reply)—Both are manifestations of bending about [210] axis. The difference is one of degree. W. C. Ellis (Bell Telephone Laboratories, New York) —Some observations of deformation in zinc recorded in this paper may be applicable generally to flow in metals. One of these, deformation in torsion without evidence of slip or twinning in the early stages and with startling ease, when the twist is about the hexagonal axis, adds another method of flow to the presently increasing list of mechanisms. This illustrates again that a crystal will utilize any realizable process to flow and relieve stress. The process is not necessarily classical directional slip—& this case, it is rotational slip. The question naturally occurs: Will face-centered cubic metas stressed by twisting about an octahedral axis flow in a similar manner by rotation on an octahedral plane? I would like to ask Dr. Jillson if he has made any experiments or knows of any experiments of this type on face-centered cubic metals? Face-centered cubic metals possibly would behave differently from zinc, since, for one thing, the stacking sequence is different for the two structures. The results of such experiments, however, would be instructive in providing more information about deformation processes. D. C. Jillson—Dr. Roy E. Swift, working in the Hammond Laboratory at Yale, performed a twist test on a single crystal of brass. The work has not been published, and I do not know the crystallographic direction of the axis of the specimen used. Lo-ching Chang (Columbia University, New York)— Observations similar to Figs. 1 and 2 of the paper were obtained by us during the bending and unbending of an orthorhombic Au-Cd alloy.'l This orthorhombic alloy is the product of diffusionless transformation from a single crystal of p Au-Cd alloy (CsC1 structure) containing 47.5 atomic pct Cd on cooling to about 60 "C.62 Referring to the effects of annealing, has the author tried any loilg time high temperature anneal, such as 150 to 200 hr at 40O°C? An experimental air-slide classifier1 has been applied to the de-dusting of ground dolomite in an attempt to produce a grade of -30 +150 mesh (B. S. Sieves) material from a raw material containing 30-35% of the -150 mesh fraction. Air flows varying between 1.5 and 2.5 cu ft/sec sq ft of screen area were used. The throughput of dolomite was between 80 and 100 lbs/h. inch of screen width. The size analyses of the de-dusted material and of the original dolomite are shown in table at right. The proportions of the +100 mesh material in the feed and in the de-dusted products have been used to calculate materials balances, on the assumption that there is no loss, as dust, of this +100 mesh fraction. By interpolation, it can be shown that a de-dusted product recovery of 68.5% will be obtained at an air flow of 2.13 cu ft/sec sq ft of screen area. The feed material contains 68.5% of +150 mesh material, so that if the de-dusting gave a perfectly sharp cut, the product would contain no material less than 150 mesh. Further calculations based on the size analyses, show that, at an air flow of 2.13 cu ft/sec sq ft of screen air, the -150 mesh fraction in the de-dusted product will fall just below the specified maximum limit of 5%.

It has long been supposed that when crystalline materials are comminuted the energy used in the production of increasingly smaller grain sizes is not entirely dissipated as heat but that a certain portion is "stored" as a part of the internal energy of the material. This portion usually has been called the "surface energy" of the particles. The practical interest of the Bureau of Mines in this subject in connection with the energy requirements of crushing processes has led to the author's attempt to measure the "stored" energy in finely divided calcite by heat-of-solution methods1.t The experiments on calcite showed that "storage" of energy could not be proved for this material, because fine grinding caused a lack of chemical homogeneity evidenced by loss of carbon dioxide and subsequent adsorption of water on the surfaces of the calcite particles. When thermochemical correction was made for composition changes the corrected heat of solution was less for fine material than for coarse. Continuation of the experimental work into the problem of comparing work and heat in the deformation of metallic crystals, where the calorimetric difficulties were less, showed, however, that in the case of copper and aluminum a real discrepancy between work and heat could be shown. Similar results had previously been obtained by Farren and Taylor2 and Hort3 and more or less simultaneously with the author's work by Rosenhain and Stott4 and by Taylor and Quinney9 The results obtained by the different investigators were not satisfactorily consistent, but the experiments of Taylor and Quinney constitute by far the best figures obtained to date. The recrystallization behaviors of two extruded and cold-drawn experimental sintered aluminum powder alloys, containing 1.75 and 3.0 pct Al2O3 by weight, were compared with that of extruded and cold-drawn commercially pure alumirzum. The kinetics of recrystallization of the alloys are described semiquantitatively. For the alloy containing 1.75 pct A l203 the rates of nucleation and of growth were also semiquantitatively determined. THE most striking property of aluminum alloys strengthened by a dispersion of Al2O3, the so-called SAP alloys, is their stability at elevated temperatures. One of the manifestations of this stability is their resistance to recrystallization after they have been cold worked. Most of the commercial grades of either the Swiss SAP or of Alcoa's Aluminum Powder Metallurgy Products have not been recrys-tallized after cold working, even when they are heated for a long time at a temperature near the aluminum melting point. Lenel, however, observed that the dispersion strengthened aluminum alloys with a larger spacing between the oxide particles than that of most commercial grades would recrys-tallize.1 It appeared to be of interest to further investigate the mode and kinetics of recrystallization of these alloys, and to compare their recrystallization behavior with that of commercially pure aluminum. Because homogeneous deformation of these SAP alloys in tension did not provide sufficient cold work to induce recrystallization, they were cold worked by wire drawing; the nonuniformity of this deformation unavoidably complicated the interpretation of the recrystallization studies. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Extrusions—Two types of sintered aluminum powder extrusions were used in this study. One type, designated AT-400, was produced from Reynolds atomized aluminum powder consisting of spherical particles averaging 3µ in diam and containing 1.75 wt pct of Al2O3. This powder was very similar to the R3M powder from which extrusions were previously prepared with an average spacing of 0.9µ between oxide particles.2 The second type, designated MD 2100, was produced from Metals Disintegrating Co. flake powder containing 3.0 wt pct of Al2O3, with an average flake thickness of 0.8µ. The average spacing between oxide platelets in MD 2100 extru- sions was 0.45µ.2 Powder compacts of 3/4-in. diam were extruded at 1000°F into 0.097-in. diam (AT-400) and 0.093-in. diam (MD 2100) wires by methods previously described.3 In order to compare the recrystallization behavior of sintered aluminum powder extrusions with that of wrought commercially pure aluminum 3/4 in. rod stock of 1100 F aluminum was extruded at 1000°F into 0.102-in. diam wire. Wire Drawing—Tungsten carbide dies were used for the AT-400 and 1100 F alloys. They had an included angle of about 15 deg and reduced the wire area approximately 7 pct per pass. Steel dies with an included angle of 11 to 13 deg and an average reduction per pass of 10 pct were used for drawing the MD 2100 alloy, because drawing this alloy through the carbide dies produced overdrawing defects. Heat Treatment—The cold-drawn wires were cut into small samples, and the deformed ends were etched off. The samples were each wrapped tightly in a single layer of aluminum foil, and individually isothermally annealed in a lead bath. Metallography—The modes and kinetics of recrystallization were determined by metallography. Mounted and polished specimens were anodized in a solution of 1.8 pct HBF4;4 examination under polarized light clearly revealed their grain structures. The recrystallized grains were generally much larger than those of the unrecrystallized matrix, and could clearly be distinguished because they alternated between maximum and minimum light reflection when the microscope stage was rotated, while the unrecrystallized matrix had a comparatively homogeneous "salt and pepper" structure. The fractional recrystallized volumes of the dispersion hardened alloy wires were determined by cutting and weighing of recrystallized and total transverse areas on photomicrographs. The recrystallized grains in the 1100 F alloy were too small to be cut out individually; therefore a combination of cutting and lineal analysis was used in this case. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Modes of Recrystallization—The modes of recrystallization of the three alloys varied widely. For nearly a century, the Corocoro deposit has been renowned among geologists from the fact that it shares with the Lake Superior deposits of the United States the distinction of being the only important copper districts where native copper is worked commercially. The Corocoro district, named after the city of Corocoro, the capital of the Province of Pacajes (Department of La Pas, Bolivia) is situated towards the western edge of the Bolivian high plateau, at an altitude of a little over 13,000 ft. The most interesting part of the district is that immediately surrounding the city of Corocoro, at a distance, by railway, of 65 miles from La Paz and 210 miles to the Chilean port of Arica on the Pacific Coast. The climate of the region is that of the semi-desert, dry and relatively cold, with big differences of temperature between day and night. The rainy season begins in December and ends in March. The cupriferous lodes of Corocoro have not attracted as much interest as the silver mines of Potosi but they have been known for a long time. In the precolonial period the Indians were using the charquis, or natural native copper sheets, to make small brass objects, and the beautiful pale green brochantite of the outcrops as a source of green pigments. During the colonial period, the oxidized ores of the outcrops were worked for copper, which was used by the mint at Potosi for making currency. The native copper ores were neglected because the Spanish miners were at a loss how to concentrate and smelt them. About 1830, work by rudimentary processes, which were improved little by little, was begun on the native copper ores. The total production of native copper in the following hundred years amounted to 100,000 tons. This native copper, which was remarkably pure, was much appreciated on the European markets before the introduction of electrolytic copper. It was useful for making special ornamental brass or bronze and the granular concentrates of native copper, called barrilla, containing 80 to 85 per cent copper were suitable for making copper sulfate by direct oxidation and subsequent leaching with sulfuric acid.

Solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron-manganese system at 1550°C and one atmosphere pressure has been determined by a simple method. Results show that the solubility increases from 0.040 pct for pure iron to 1.41 pct for pure manganese. DETERMINATION of the solubility of gases in volatile metals. and alloys by the well-known Sievertsl method is unreliable. This is particularly true for the Fe-Mn system since Mn vaporizes readily from the alloys containing as little as 2 pct Mn, and, upon condensing on the cooler parts of the apparatus, it absorbs large amounts of nitrogen. Further, the condensing Mn vapor interferes with the usual method of temperature measurements with an optical pyrometer.

The following quotation is from "Guidelines for evaluation of undergraduate curricula in geological engineering, mineral processing, and mining engineering" prepared by the Committee on Education of SME of AIME. "The objectives of the Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD), as delineated in its constitution, are: (a) To promote and advance all phases of engineering education with a view to the promotion of the public welfare through the development of the better educated engineer and engineering technician." (Italics added.) The problem is that no one has as yet seriously developed a method of supplying engineering technicians. There were great hopes that the expansion of junior colleges would help satisfy this need. Sadly, they have not; and it appears they are unwilling or unable to supply the need for mineral engineering technologists. Apparently, the junior colleges cannot afford staff for such courses, even when the colleges are located in mining districts.

ThRee great deposits of iron-ore, in Camaguey and Oriente Provinces, Cuba, are well known to me through careful field-examinations executed in the years 1901 and 1907. In 1901 I visited the Cubitas iron-ore district, which lies about 12 miles distant from the city of Camaguey in a northerly direction, and the Mayari district, which includes the Sierra Nipe, lying opposite Nipe bay on the north side of Oriente Province. In 1907 I again visited the Cubitas district, and also made a sojourn of several days in the Moa district, where the extensive deposits of iron-ore were observed and studied. The observations of 1901 were made under the auspices of the then Military Governor of Cuba, Gen. Leonard Wood, and my conclusions concerning the value of these deposits were incorporated in a report.' The examination of certain denouncements of iron-ore in the Moa district in 1907 was made in behalf of iron-masters operating in the United States, to whom I reported the existence of large amounts of easily-workable limonitic iron-ore, properly designated " brown iron-ore " in the terminology now current among iron-ore producers in the United States. In 1908 I published a paper entitled, Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, outlining the occurrence and origin of the surfi-cia1 ores existing in the Cubitas, Mayari, and Moa districts.2

INTRODUCTION Good mine ventilation starts at the drawing board. A coal mine will either be adequately ventilated or not, depending upon how good a job was done in the planning. Poor planning will not only result in inadequate ventilation, but may also lead to low productivity. A mine foreman cannot achieve high productivity while trying to maintain 4.2 m3/s (9000 cfm) of air at his last open crosscut. PLANNING What will provide adequate ventilation? A rule of thumb in laying out a coal mine is to provide enough entries in the main entry system to keep air velocities at 2.5 m/s (500 fpm) or less; at this rate of flow, good ventilation may be expected. The intake and return air courses of a coal mine do not improve with age. Entries will deteriorate, ribs will slough, roof will fall, and clutter will accumulate. The resistance offered to air travel will continue to increase with each passing year. Providing enough airways for the present and the future cannot be emphasized too strongly. In order to better appreciate good planning and bring it into better focus, assume a hypothetical mine has the following features: entries 1.5 m (5 ft) high and 6.1 m (20 ft) wide; one intake and one return entry; the mine development is 4.8 km (3 miles) from the intake and upcast ventilation shafts; and the ventilation requirement is 141.6 m3/s (300,000 cfm) . THE MAJOR use of spelter has always been for the coating of iron and steel products, the process of coating being known as "galvanizing" and the products themselves as "galvanized," except for a couple of years during the war, when the consumption for brass making became superior, in the United States at least, owing to military demands. Since 1919, however, the consumption of spelter for galvanizing has regained the premier position, but not with such a long lead over brass making as previous to the war. The last development is ascribable to two main reasons, viz., an increased demand for brass in new industries, especially automobile manufacturing; and a diminished use of spelter per unit of iron and steel galvanized. MAJOR IMPORTANCE OF SUBJECT The last mentioned matter has already been the subject of some discussion and of some literature. The galvanizers have been charged with deliberately thinning their zinc coatings, with the consequence of producing inferior goods and thereby jeopardizing the whole galvanizing business. Zinc producers have been concerned about this, out of consideration of both the less use of zinc per unit of iron and steel and the fear that, the number of units produced may be curtailed. It has been argued, among other things, that the present policy of American galvanizers would impair their ability to compete in foreign markets with British galvanizers, who have been represented as making a superior product.

This paper discusses some of the results of combstion-drive tests which were made in a test cell using a sand bed 10 in. in diameter x 10-ft long. The test method is illustrated and described. The relationship between the API gravity of the in situ oil and the amount of air required for combustion drive is discussed in detail. Other things constant, the air requirement for combustion drive increases as the APl gravity of the in situ oil decreases. If the test results apply to actual reservoirs, the lowest-priced oils may cost the most to recover by this method. Information is shown which indicates that the effect of pressure on the amount of hydrocarbon burned is not large. A method of predicting air requirements from the API gravity of the in situ oil is presented. INTRODUCTION Combustion drive is the term used to identify the process of interstitial or in situ burning as an oil recovery method. Part of the in situ oil is burned to generate the energy needed to produce the remainder of the oil. Combustion drive as an oil recovery mechanism remains an economic uncertainty in spite of all the work that has been done by the industry in both laboratory and field?-6 This paper will show some of the results of tests which were made in a test cell for the purpose of studying the nature of the combustion-drive process. It will present data which indicate that the API gravity of the in situ oil is a significant indicator of the amount of air required to drive a burning front through oil sand. Air requirement varies inversely as the API gravity of the in situ oil. EXPERIMENTAL The tests were performed in a cell which utilized a cylindrical sand section 10 in. in diameter x 10-ft long. The thin-walled metal pipe which held the sand was wound with twenty external electrical resistance heaters which, by means of an automatic controller, maintained adjacent sections of the wall of the pipe at temperatures equal to the temperatures of the contained sand. Each heater covered 6 linear in. of the pipe. By this means lateral heat loss from the sand section was minimized, thereby causing the sand section to simulate more closely a horizontal increment of a combustion-drive reservoir. Fig. 1 shows a schematic diagram of the test assembly. Thermocouples to measure the temperature in the sand were located every 6 in. along the length of the sand section. The pipe containing the sand was enclosed in a cell designed for an operating pressure of 500 psig. The inlet air pressure was controlled at the inlet, and the gas flow rate was controlled and measured at the outlet of the cell. The oil sand used for the tests was prepared by mixing first water and then oil with the noncon-solidated sand using a closed mixer similar to a cement mixer. Table 1 shows a screen analysis of the sand. Ninety percent of the sand was 100 mesh or finer. This sand was a mixture of 80 per cent No. 120 Nevada White Sand and 20 per cent Tennessee Hi-Fusion Moulding Sand No. 3. The Nevada sand was a clean silica sand. The Tennessee sand con-
