In 1976, a decision was made to install a conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 miles) from the new Eisenhower mine to Twin Buttes. The system, supplied and installed by Cable Belt Ltd., of England, represents a radical departure from conventional conveyor systems. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes while the belt acts only as the carrying medium. Features of the system are a single 2240-kW (3000-hp) drive and a 60° angle bend. Construction was completed in two years and full production was attained alter several mouths operation.

This discussion of accounting will describe the statements and the information that the accounting system produces, from the point of view of those who use such systems rather than of those who prepare them and who do the detail and technical accounting work. In any well organized mine, quarry, or other enterprise exploiting a mineral deposit, no matter how small, some clerical and accounting work must be done. Miners and other employes must be paid, supplies must be purchased and issued, and various tax and information returns, which even the smallest enterprise must file, have to be prepared. In this chapter it is assumed that the enterprise has employes of this type and that they understand the fundamentals of record keeping and accounting. It would be impossible here to give sufficiently full explanations to enable a man with no previous clerical and accounting training to set up and operate an accounting and cost system for even the simplest extractive operation. Rather, we shall hope first, to tell the investor and the operator, from the chief engineer or president down to a subforeman, what to expect from the accounting statements and records and how to use this information in his daily work; and second, that it will enable the man with some knowledge of accounting or bookkeeping, but with little or no experience in any extractive industry, to set up and operate a satisfactory system for a mine or other extractive enterprise. For readers who wish to go further, the bibliography at the end of this chapter contains many references. The emphasis has, therefore, been placed on the statements to be produced and the purposes for which they are to be used rather than the underlying books and records. These are, with a few exceptions which will be described later, essentially what might be found in any industrial enterprise and would probably, in the extremely small enterprise, consist of handwritten journals, ledgers, analysis books, payroll books, and stores ledgers. In the larger enterprise, various types of mechanical accounting would be introduced in proportion to the complexity of the operation.

A special meeting of the officers of the Columbia Section was held in Spokane, Wash., Jan. 10, 1918, for the purpose of organizing and nominating members to the principal committees of the Section. Present: J. C. Haas, Vice-chairman; W. H. Linney, Past Chairman; and L. K. Armstrong, Secretary. J. F. McCarthy, Wallace, Idaho, was appointed fifth member of the Executive Committee. The following were appointed to the Membership Committee: R. M. Betts; for Oregon; W. J. Hall, for Idaho; J. M. Porter, for Washington. A member for British Columbia will be appointed later. The following were appointed to the Committee on Papers: Prof. F. A. Thomson, Moscow, Idaho; Prof. L. 0. Howard, Pullman, Wash.; H. S. Lee, Rye Valley, Ore. A fourth member, representing British Columbia, is to be appointed later. The following members were appointed representatives on the Executive Committee of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association: J. C. Haas, W. H. Linney, F. A. Ross, L. K. Armstrong. The Treasurer reported a deficit, resulting from the participation of the Section at the Northwest Mining Convention in 1916. It was recommended that the Institute be petitioned to make good this deficit, in addition to the usual annual allowance. The members of the committee who were present expressed their desire to be of greater service in the present war, and discussed at some length the possible means of carrying out their desires. It was later decided to reopen the subject at a subsequent meeting of the Section, or to present it to the Executive Committee of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association for discussion and cooperative action. PRACTICALLY every metallurgical process in-volves, at some stage or another, the contact of a metal with a gas. Because of this, gas-metal re-actions are of great practical importance and have been subjected to numerous investigations. It has long been recognized that the presence of cuprous oxide in liquid copper has an important effect on its casting characteristics and .physical properties. This has led to the desirability of determining the quantitative relationships between cuprous oxide in the liquid copper and the usual gases present during processing. Such data are not only of practical importance but also of a theoretical interest in that they provide a means of applying the principles of physical chemistry to problems in applied metallurgy. The object of this investigation was to determine the quantitative relationship at equilibrium between the gases carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and the cuprous oxide content of liquid copper. The reaction and its equilibrium constant may be expressed as follows: 2 Cu (liq) + CO2 (g) = Cu2O + CO (g) acu2o X aco/a2 cu X aco2 Here the underlined symbol Cu2O designates cuprous oxide dissolved in liquid copper and (a), the activity of the various constituents. The activities of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are assumed to be directly proportional to their re- spective partial pressures and the activities of cuprous oxide and copper are taken to be proportional to their respective mol fractions. The equilibrium constant may then be expressed as follows: K2 = Ncu2o X Pco [Ncu]2 X Pco2 where N = mol fraction The solubility of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in liquid copper is a rather controversial subject.'-' A review of the literature is given by 0. W. Ellis.' It appears that carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are both only very slightly, if at all, soluble in liquid copper. Volskii and Slobodskoi5 determined the equilibrium between carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and liquid copper at 1100°C. Their results show a higher cuprous oxide content for a given CO/CO2 ratio than found in the present work. The system hydrogen, water vapor, and liquid copper was investigated by Allen and Hewitt8 over the temperature range of 1090" to 1350°C. Equilibrium values for the system carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and liquid copper calculated from these data agree reasonably well with the present work. Materials and Procedure The copper used was oxygen free, designated as OF and analyzed as 99.98 pct copper with no appreciable amount of any one impurity based upon spectrographic determinations. The carbon dioxide was cylinder gas averaging about 99.95 pct CO2 with air as the major impurity. The carbon monoxide was produced by passing carbon dioxide over heated charcoal. Alundum combustion boats were used as containers for the liquid copper. No appreciable reaction took place between the copper and the alumina. The mining methods adopted in Japanese mines are less known to the mining world than those of other countries, owing to the geographical remoteness, but they present many features of interest to mining engineers. The Ashio copper mine is at the town of Ashio, in Tochigiken, about 109 mi. (175 km.) from Tokyo by the Imperial Government railroad. The area of the concession owned by the Furukawa Mining Co. is 5000 acres (5023 ha.). The mine was formerly divided into three, viz. Hon-ean, Kotaki, and Tsudo, which are distant 3 mi. (4.8 km.) from each other as shown in Fig. 1. However, in 1914, when the writer was general manager, the three mining plants were amalgamated into one with the result of simplifying the working projects and increasing the operating efficiency. The mine was visited by the Institute party in November, 1911, when K. Inouye was the general manager. Shortly afterward, the writer was appointed manager, and, in 1915, he was succeeded by Dr. K. Asano. At the end of 1917, K. Kibe became general manager and, after two years, was succeeded by the present manager, I. Sugimoto. For some time Dr. J. Kojima was acting general manager. It is necdless to say that the gentlemen mentioned are all members of the Institute, as is also Baron T. Furukawa, president of the company. Since the discovery of the enormous masses, called "kajika" or "bullhead" deposits, which the writer has described elsewhere,' the mining methods have been varied to meet the different conditions presented by these deposits. The Ashio Ore The country rock of this mine consists of the middle Chichibian slate and quartzite into which has been intruded a post-Tertiary plagio-liparite neck more than 2 mi. in diameter, in the shape of an inverted cone which narrows downward to a relatively small diameter in depth.

The paper by Professors Sun and Mitchell illustrates the value of ultrasonics as a tool for the mineral engineer. In particular, it opens up a number of possibilities to those interested in the field of comminution. The provision of desliming technique, which is thorough as well as rapid, is a distinct contribution, but the data of the paper suggest applications beyond desliming, in that the same treatments may be useful for size determination purposes. Fig. 1 shows that a marked dependence exists between particle size and the height to which it can be elevated by ultrasonic vibrations. While the curves are only extended down to a size of about 100 p, the fact that they appear to be increasing in slope in this range suggests that the separation may be even more marked here. This, we feel, is very strong evidence that a method for fine sizing could be developed to use ultra- sonic waves as the separating force.

MOST commercial electrostatic separators utilize the electrical property of conductivity, but although based on the same principles, they are constructed in a variety of forms, a common one being the simple roll type. Some information obtained during an investigation of that type of separator, and which indirectly is applicable to other types, is presented here. NUMERICAL RELATIONSHIP In Fig. I material discharged from hopper 6 is fed onto grounded rotating roll 2. Electrode 3 is at a high electrical potential with respect to roll 2, and any conductive particle in contact with roll 2 therefore acquires an electrical charge of such polarity that, when present in the electrical field, the force on it is in the direction of electrode 3. A detailed description of the charging by conductance as utilized in electrostatic separators may be found in a previous publication.1 As a result of this force, the path of the projected particle is changed in increasing amounts in the direction toward region C as the magnitude of the charge is increased. With the dividing edge 4 the projected particles may be divided into two fractions -those in region C designated as "deflected" or " deflectant " and those in region B designated as "residue." When material is passed over the roll only once, a complete separation is seldom obtained, therefore most commercial separators contain several roll-separator units in [ ] series, and some practical machines use as many as 12. In this paper a "pass" means the passage of material over a single-roll unit. The procedure is to repass either residue B with a low potential on electrode 3 or deflectant C with a high potential on 3. Most electrostatic separations follow a flowsheet of roughing and cleaning either the concentrate or the tailing, on both. IN the Indiana limestone district, some 50 or 60 per, cent of the merchantable stone in a quarry opening is waste, and only about 40 or 50 per cent of the stone from the opening is finally sold. So long as the present system of quarrying is used, the wastes measured and reported in this paper will continue. Comprehensive development of an entirely different method of quarrying, using wire saws for cutting, promises great improvement. Some of the savings to be expected are pointed out in the following pages. No attempt has been made to measure losses due to variations and natural flaws in the stone, since these vary greatly in different quarries, and accurate measurement would be difficult. The wastes that have been measured account for about 30 per cent of the total ledge, which leaves 20 or 30 per cent chargeable to unmeasured sources of loss.

The apparent vapor pressures of a number of metal sulphides were determined by measuring their rate of weight loss when they were heated under vacuum. The calculated pressures are due in some instances to the volatility of the sulphide and in others to the decomposition pressure. FIE direct reduction of metallic sulphides, as in the precipitation method for lead or antimony, is not a widely used process today. However, it might be employed for the production of a number of metals if the operation were carried out under reduced pressures. Two general procedures are possible; the reducing agent could form a stable nonvolatile sulphide from which the valuable metal could be removed by volatilization or liquation. The other approach would be to choose a reducing agent which would form a sulphide that could be volatilized away from the valuable metal. A vacuum operation would serve to protect the sulphides and metals from oxidation and would increase the evaporation rates. A related process is the separation of metallic sulphides by selective volatilization either at atmospheric pressure or under vacuum. This procedure is already used commercially for the elimination of lead and cadmium as PbS and CdS from zinc calcines; it might well have other applications. To predict such processes it is necessary to know the relative volatilities of the metallic sulphides and to know whether they volatilize as sulphides or whether the predominant weight loss is due to decomposition. Such data would also be of value in studying problems such as the use of sulphides for refractories, as described by Brewer,] or in the evaluation of the theory of ore deposition from the vapor state, as proposed by Brown.' Qualitative statements concerning the volatility of metallic sulphides can be found frequently in the literature and are well summarized by Mellor, but accurate determinations of rates of evaporation or vapor pressures are very scarce. Kelly" lists vapor pressure data only for PbS; his reference being to the work of Schenck and Albers,4 who measured the vapor pressure of PbS by a dynamic method between 850" and 995°C. More recently Veselovskii5 has determined the vapor pressures of the sulphides of antimony, lead, cadmium, and zinc at temperatures ranging from 360" to 1000°C using Knudsen's method. A second Russian worker, Pogorelyi,6 determined the vapor pressures of CdS and ZnS at temperatures from 900" to 1250°C. The results obtained by these workers are shown in subsequent graphs in comparison with the data of this paper. Brewer and coworkers1 have studied some of the metallic sulphides to determine their suitability as refractories in vacuum. Veselovskii's determinations on PbS checked well with those of Schenck and Albers, and his determinations of CdS check almost exactly with Pogo-relyi. For the vapor pressure of ZnS the data of Veselovskii and that of Pogorelyi are in fair agreement, as shown in Fig. 1, but it should be pointed out that Lumsden7 has discovered that the equation given by Veselovskii for the vapor pressure of ZnS: - 14,200 log P9.495 is in error by a factor of ten when compared to the experimental data. In contrast with the scarcity of data on vapor pressures, the decomposition pressures of many metal sulphides have been determined and are summarized by Smithells.8 Theoretical Considerations The experiments described in this paper consisted of determinations of the rate of weight loss of certain metallic sulphides under very low pressures at different temperatures. These data plus observation and analyses of the products reveal the mechanism of the weight loss and also provide a basis for the calculation of the vapor pressure or apparent vapor pressures of the sulphides.

THE grain size of a metal or alloy is one of the most important factors determining its properties. In steels, for example, grain size affects hardenability, toughness and machinability; in brasses, grain size is related to hardness and deep-drawing quality. In the field of heat-resistant alloys, grain size has a marked effect on ductility, creep and endurance strength. In order to determine these effects, as well as to control the properties of materials, many accurate and rapid measurements of grain size must be made. This paper presents a new and improved method for the estimation of grain size. USUAL METHODS of EVALUATING GRAIN SIZE A frequently used method of estimating grain size is that of comparing the image of a polished and etched specimen on the ground-glass screen of a metallographic microscope with standard grain-size charts. Several types of standards are available for use with different classes of microstructures. Geometric Grids.-The Metals Handbook1 has a series of hexagonal grids ranging in size from ASTM No. I to 8. Idealized Grain Networks.-Idealized grain-boundary networks for ASTM grain sizes I to 8 are included in the American Society for Testing Materials Tentative Standard E19-39T. Standard Micrographs.- The Metals Handbook and ASTM Tentative Standard EI9-39T contain micrographs of hypoeutectoid and hypereutectoid steels ranging in grain size from No. I to 8. The grain size of annealed brass (diam¬eter of the average grain in millimeters) is obtained by comparison with 10 micrographs of varying grain size in ASTM Tentative Standard Es-39T. A handicap to accurate evaluation of grain size by this method is the fact that it is difficult to compare photographs in a dimly lighted room with the image on the ground-glass screen, or, if the general illumination is increased so that the printed standards may be clearly seen, the contrast of the image of the unknown is decreased. It is easier to estimate grain size by comparing a micrograph of the unknown with the grain-size standards. However, photographing every specimen on which the grain size is desired is too costly in time and materials to be practicable. For hardened steels, the Shepherd or Jernkontoret fracture grain-size standards are very accurate and useful, but this method obviously cannot be applied to ductile alloys such as brass, stainless steels and austenitic heat-resistant alloys. THE testing of flotation oils has occupied a large part of the time of the testing departments of various companies using the flotation process in the beneficiation of their ores. The great differences in ores and iii oils has made such work necessary as it has not been possible to select the oil best suited for the purpose without trial of many kinds. In fact, individual shipments of flotation oils from the same manufacturer will often differ so radically that the mill men have been forced to test every lot of flotation oil before its use in the mills. Further, although almost every imaginable product of the distillation of wood, from alcohol to pitch, has been tested in a more or less perfunctory manner by various people, few companies have allowed the results of their tests to be made public. This work was undertaken for the purpose of obtaining reliable data regarding the value as flotation agents of a number of products that are obtained from the distillation of wood by different methods, and incidentally to determine whether some of the products not used at present could be used. Large quantities of such materials are being wasted or burned in the wood-distillation plants of the United States, and if some use other than fuel could be found for these materials, such a use would represent a distinct saving to the country as a whole, would increase the profit of wood-distilling plants now operating and perhaps make it possible for others to operate which at present cannot do so except at a loss. At the same time it was thought that if such products can be used as flotation agents, then their use would serve to increase the number of oils and other products available for flotation purposes. Production of both metallurgical and thermal coal represents a significant sector of the mining economy of British Columbia. The coal measures are located in the Rocky Mountains, and the majority of the coal is produced by open pit mining. The coal seams occur interbedded with siltstones, sandstones, mudstones, and shales. Consequently, large volumes of waste rock are generated in the course of open pit mining. The waste rock is consigned to waste rock piles that of necessity must be developed on moderate to steeply sloping terrain. Some of the waste dumps currently under development will ultimately contain in excess of 500 million cubic meters of material, and some of the proposed waste piles will attain heights in excess of 300 m. These waste piles must be developed in a manner that will assure their stability through all stages of development, as well as over the long term after mining operations have been completed. This paper describes methods of waste dump development, factors affecting stability, modes of potential failure, and a simple method for monitoring movements to provide a warning of pending unstable conditions.

Never having done it before, it took us all day and until 11 at night to select and pack for a four-day back- pack trip up Lake Chelan last month. When we were through, we couldn't lift our own pack and Sylvia's, OUT spouse's, we barely managed to budge. Nevertheless, the next morning we were at the dock to board the Laldy of the Lake for the 3 ½ -hr boat trip to Lucerne. Our dress and accouterments creating the appearance of a veritable expedition into the wilderness made a sharp contrast with our fellow passengers, a senior citizens tour group from Spokane. We had come out to Seattle for the SME Fall Meeting and were taking advantage of the occasion for a vacation trip back to Lucerne and Holden where we had lived briefly 25-years ago, and a backpack trip up Railroad Creek from Holden to the Glacier Peak country, weather permitting. No matter what you say, weather is important, and this is one of the ingredients that went into making the SME Fall Meeting and Exhibit in Seattle, September 22-24, a thoroughly delightful experience for the 700 plus persons who attended. Seattle is a beautiful city, but with late September sunshine, which we experienced, it is the best. The second ingredient, is a swinging host committee. Under the leadership of Don Anderson and Tom Van Zandt, co-chairmen, and Mrs. Cecilia Reed, Ladies Program, superb hospitality and fine arrangements were blended. Earl Beistline, from Fairbanks, organized a two-day short course on arctic operations which preceded the meeting and drew an attendance of 44. Dick Robbins, in charge of arrangements, provided Masters-at- arms for technical sessions and a presentation of the colors by the U.S. Coast Guard at the Welcoming Luncheon. Eric Cheney's field trips ranged far and wide with events both before and after the meeting. David (Jeff) Kroft, capably managed audio-visual operations with a group of students from the University of Washington. Charles Hochmuth worked long, hard and effectively before and during the meet- ing on finances. Hank Reed, managed an authentic three-ring circus as Entertainment Chairman. His activities covered two cocktail receptions for all registrants and a dinner-dance. Dolph Campbell and Joe Hackbarth provided publicity by press and TV (see p. 37-40). SME's meetings have certain characteristics and possibly not all of these are known to everyone. The first of these is the deliberate involvement of the AIME Section in the area of the meeting. Most trade shows and conventions are run 100% by a professional staff and although SME staff could also do this, it has been our experience that a more friendly and better meeting results when the local members apply their talents. Actually SME only considers a site for a meeting after it has received an invitation from a Section. The knowledge of local conditions which Section committeemen bring to a meeting is of great value.

The characteristics of successful heap and dump leach operations are first reviewed in a general sense. Then attention is focussed on solution management as the key operating parameter in leaching. The first part of this study includes a detailed conceptual analysis of fluid flow. This identifies the relationships between the flow parameters and the chemical and physical properties of the rock. Then these relationships are extended to practical systems in order to establish optimum application rates and solution distribution methods for heaps and dumps. The study shows that there is a maximum effective application rate, qmax, that can be used without causing solution short circuiting. This rate is a function of the minimum permeability in the heap or dump. The expression for qmax is qmax (gal/ft2/hr)[~]0.9 k (darcies). Here k is the appropriate permeability coefficient. Using this equation, qmax is found to be on the order of 1 gal/ft2/hr (4 cm/hr) for a typical heap or dump leach operation.

Introduction When one thinks about world metal economics today, it seems to me he must go beyond the traditional factors such as exploration, discovery, economic feasibility of development, management, labor, and the application of technology. These elements have been and will continue to be very important, of course, in making available the resources that experts believe the world will require during the remainder of this century. There are, however, some new forces as well as new or different emphasis on some of the old factors that could materially affect the development of the world metal mining industries. For example, in my own company two of the most significant considerations affecting our economics today have to do with foreign political decisions and with environmental concerns here in the U. S. -both of which play a far more significant role in our economic considerations than they did as recently as 10 years ago. After a brief look at some historical data and some projections of probable future demands for the world's major metals, I shall then identify and comment upon some of the factors that I believe will have an increasing impact on the future of the economics of our industries. I do not have any magic solutions to the problems we will face; nevertheless, we in the mining industries of the world are going to have to cope with these matters and find satisfactory answers to the problems they will create. The Past Although the age in which we live has been described as the atomic age, the space age and the computer age, we are, in fact, living in a metals age, and we have lived in a metals age for a very long time. The discovery of copper smelting, for example, is placed at about 4000 B.C. Gold was used in a primitive way before that. Other metals - lead, silver, tin, iron and mercury - were discovered and used before 2000 B.C. In all probability, we will be dependent upon metals beyond the vision of anyone living today. In industrialized nations of the world, man's mode of living is based to a great extent on metals, and it is extremely unlikely

The town of Goldfield, Nevada, with the exception of six stone buildings, was burned to the ground to-day. One man is dead from causes attributed to the fire. A woman is missing and is believed to have perished and several persons were treated for burns as the result of the conflagration believed to have been of incendiary origin which started in the old Tenderloin District. The water supply was not sufficient and dynamite only scattered the frame structures and added kindling to the flames which were fanned by a forty-mile wind. Newspaper Dispatch, July 6. No former Goldfield resident could read that dispatch with unmixed feelings. About two o'clock one morning the crowded train from San Francisco landed me in Goldfield no more hours late than it habitually was. The desert air was clear and crisp and bracing but the pandemonium of cab and bus drivers did not drown out the sounds of music and merriment which floated from the blaze of light which was Goldfield about three-quarters of a mile from the station. As I stood in the ferry house, at the foot of Market Street, awaiting the Oakland Ferry, an old friend of mine, down to see who was departing for the greatest boom town of this generation, informed me that if I had made no reservation for quarters in Goldfield, I would be unable to obtain any, even chairs in the hotel lobbies were renting for $4 per night, and volun-teered the use of his room there for my convenience until his return. He described the house and location, which I identified without difficulty, but found no one to direct me to the room. I peered through a glass door into a room which seemed to be unoccupied and timorously entered and turned on the electric light., I found mail on the dresser addressed to my friend,

Poly crystalline aluminum specimens having random and diffuse (001) initial orientations were reduced 90 pct in area at room temperature by drawing, extruding, and swaging. Although each procedure produced the duplex (001)- (111) texture, there were marked dqferences in the relative amounts of each component. This also produced variations in the tensile properties of the aluminum rods. It is generally agreed that the fiber texture found in aluminum rods consists of a strong (111) and a weak (001) component after reductions in area of 90 pct or more. An examination of data summarized in recent reviews'-3 shows much spread in the values for the relative amounts of the two components reported by different investigators. That the initial orientation has a marked influence on the final texture even after reductions in area greater than 90 pct is well-documented.4-7 Another factor which may influence the relative amounts of the two components is the method of fabricating the wires or rods. Barrett and ~assalski' state that the center of wires formed by rolling, swaging, and drawing have the same textures. The data cited in support of this conclusion came from qualitative X-ray techniques. In recent years there has been renewed interest in correlating the type of preferred orientation with such parameters as stacking fault energy and onset of mechanical twinning.'' Since these analyses have often used many sources of data, it is essential that the data be evaluated for the effect of fabrication variables. In this study we have produced aluminum rods by drawing, swaging, and extruding and have quantitatively determined their textures. All specimens had the same purity and fabrication temperature, and the amount of deformation and the starting textures were determined. We have compared our results with published studies on similar materials and fabricating parameters. We have also compared results from the same three fabricating procedures for single-crystal specimens in three instances. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The aluminum was 99.99+ pct with the only detected impurities being (by weight) 0.002 pct Cu, 0.001 pct Si, and 0.001 pct Mg. Cylinders a in. in diam by 1 in. long with a fine-grain random texture were made by the following method. Cubes 1+ in. on a side were machined from 2-in.-diam ingots. These cubes were slowly pressed about 30 pct in each of the cube directions. The material was recrystallized by annealing 1 hr at 350°C. Three deformation-anneal cycles produced the desired material. Polycrystalline specimens with a diffuse (001) texture were made by casting into a graphite tube 1 in. ID, li in. OD, by 8 in. long which had been preheated to 900°C.
