Progress on the earth depends to a large extent upon the rapid interchange of ideas and commodities between the various nations of the world. The smooth flow of commerce, by which these ideas and commodities move, is accelerated by accurate and complete maps of the various land and water areas of the earth. The production of accurate maps depends upon a complete knowledge of the figure and dimensions of the object to be charted, therefore a knowledge of the shape of the earth is a prime necessity for accurate charting purposes. Gravity observations were first undertaken to aid in determining the shape of the earth so that the geodetic surveys of its land and water areas might be more accurately connected to form an undistorted map. A large part of the earth's surface is water and it is therefore necessary to get gravity values at sea as well as on land before a complete and accurate figure of the earth can be determined. Dr. F. A. Vening Meinesz, of Holland, was the first scientist to perfect a pendulum instrument that would accurately measure gravity at sea. He had previously developed a multiple pendulum apparatus for measuring gravity upon swampy and unstable land areas in Holland and it was therefore quite natural that he should adapt the instrument to give accurate results upon a still more unstable support, the surface of the sea. His instrument as perfected gives satisfactory results when mounted in gimbals on any vessel where the roll and pitch are not more than about 5" and where the vibrations from rotating machinery and wave action are not large enough to cause the pendulums to shift on the knife-edges. This degree of stability can be obtained on surface craft only in protected waters or on very calm days. Therefore, Dr. Meinesz mounted his instrument in a submarine so that he could submerge below the disturbed surface waters and get the desired stability in nearly any kind of weather by simply diving to greater depths. Most of the gravity-at-sea work has been done with a Meinesz instrument and a very large number of the observations have been made by Dr. Meinesz himself. The structures formed when austenite is quenched to subcritical temperatures and allowed to transform isothermally have been the subject of intensive study since the work of Davcnport and Bain.' Isothermal transformation diagrams summarizing the results of many of these studies have become widely familiar to metallurgists. Of particular interest to metallographers are the dark-etchingl acicular products of transformation formed by isothermal reaction below the temperature of maximum velocity of the austenite to pearlite reaction. These products, the bainite structures, can he formed in a wide variety of steels. However, the constitution of bainite is not well understood and divergent views have been expressed as to its mode of formation. In this investigation a combination of dilatometric, microscopic and X-ray methods has been brought to bear upon the problem in the hope of some elucidation of the bainite reaction as it occurs in hypo-eutectoid steels. Mechanism OF Bainite Formation Davenport and Bainl considered the mechanism of bainite formation to consist of two steps—an allotropic transformation followed by precipitation of carbide. The separation in time of the two processes was considered to be very slight in the upper temperature range and very marked at temperatures just above the martensite range. This concept has been restated by Vilella, Guellich and Bain2 in the form of a definition of the acicular mode of transformation as: The successive, abrupt formation of flat plates of supersaturated ferrite along certain crystallographic planes of the austenite grains; this supersaturated ferrite begins at once to reject carbide palticles, (not lamellae), at a rate depending upon temperature In effect, this is the acicular mode of transformation, even though the temperature be such as to limit the actual life of the quasi-martensite to millionths of a second. The investigation of isothermal decomposition of austenite in certain alloy steels (notably those containing chromium or molybdenum) has revealed that there may be a range of temperatures between the pearlite and bainite reactions in which the austenite decomposes at a relatively low rate.3-6 Further, it is characteristic that in the second region of fast reaction the decomposition of the austenite is incomplete by one reaction but goes to completion by a second reaction. These observations led Wever7 to a description of the bainite reaction as follows: I. The reaction takes place by initial precipi. tation of a martensitic intermediate structure. 2. In the upper temperature range this structure readily decomposes into ferrite and cementite. In the lower range carbon separates in an unknown form. 3. In the upper temperature range the precipitated carbide nucleates the precipitation

The Gulf Coast of southern Louisiana during the year of 1940 was subjected to an extensive exploration and development campaign, as a result of which 16 oil fields and about 38 new producing sands were found. Although this record of discovery appears in keeping with the rate of 1939 actually in amount of new proven reserves, it may fall short of that of the previous year. Only five or six of the discoveries rated as first-class or important fields at the close of the year. The most prominent new fields opened during the year were Neale field in Beaure-gard Parish, the West Cote Blanche field in St. Mary Parish, the Stella field and the West Bay field in Plaquemines Parish, and the Lake Salvador field in St. Charles Parish. There were many important oil-sand discoveries in proven fields, such as in the Bayou Perot field, the Golden Meadows field, the Iowa field, West Lake Verrett field, and the Venice field. During the year, 1047 weUs were drilled in southern Louisiana, of which 768 were completed as oil-producing wells, 17 as gas wells and 262 as dry holes. The Neale field in northwest Beauregard Parish is considered one of the most important discoveries of the year. The f~eld centers around the north half of sec. 26, 'Y.3 S., R.I I W., just north of the town of Neale. It was discovered by the Atlantic Refining Co., using reflection seismograph to locate the structure. Production was found in the second well drilled in the Wilcox sand on the downthrown side of a fault. The structure is known as the "Tepetate" type, being similar to that of the well-known Tepetate field. There were 12 oil wells and 3 dry holes drilled during the year. The Wilcox sand in this field occurs between 8350 and 8400 ft. and averages 30 ft. in thickness. The West Cote Blanche Bay field, in West Cote Blanche Bay, St. Mary Parish, is a 1940 discovery by the Texas Company, credited to reflection seismograph exploration. The oil is from two sands occurring at 3110 to 3140 ft. and from 4950 to 5020 it. Four wells were drilled during the year, three oil wells and one dry hole. The deepest hole drilled reached 9491 ft. without encountering salt or dome material. In Plaquemines Parish, south of New Orleans, the California company has a new field known as the Stella field. The sand was found at a depth of 7485 ft., and 5 ft. of perforations made a well capable of producing 486 bbl. of oil in 24 hr. through a 9.is-in. choke. The oil is 42" gravity. The discovery well was drilled to a total depth of 10,258 ft. and other producing sands were indicated. A good field appears assured, although only one well was completed within the year. The Lake Salvador field, in the center of Lake Salvador, St. Charles Parish, gives promise of being one of the most important discoveries of the year. The discovery well was perforated at 9775 to 9800 ft. making 850 bbl. of 33.7° gravity oil daily through a 1/4-in. choke. Since 1921, when Hull1 discovered that cobalt can exist in the face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed modifications, the transitions that occur in cobalt have been extensively studied. It is generally agreed that on heating the hexagonal lattice changes to the cubic structure at ternperatures ranging from 400° to 500°C although considerable doubt exists as to the exact temperature. Data concerning the temperature of the transformation on cooling are much less concordant and their interpretation has not been satisfactory. The study is further complicated by the fact that many investigators have reported the existence of a high temperature allo-tropic change in the range 850 to 1020°C, at which the cubic lattice reverts to the hexagonal modification. The transition on cooling, which has been reported as Occurring at various temperatures from approximately 400 to 100°C, is of particular interest. Troiano and Greninger2 have recently suggested and considered the possibility Of allotropic transformations occurring in pure metals by a shear-type, diffusionless (martensite) transformation. The case of cobalt was specifically discussed and certain observations of previous investigators evaluated in terms Of this type of Of Table 1 briefly outlines the methods and results Of previous investigators Of the transformation temperatures of cobalt. Materials and Methods The major portion of this investigatioll was performed with cobalt sheet containing a total of 0.2 pet impurities with carbon present to the extent of o,I pct. After melting in an induction furnace under an atmosphere of hydrogen, the carbon con. tent analyzed 0.03 pct. Some observations were repeated with hydrogen reduced cobalt compresses analyzing 99.9 pet pure. No significant variations in results were observed employing the as-received sheet, the remelted stock, or the cobalt compresses. Filings for X ray diffraction analysis were sealed in evacuated glass ampoules. Pyrex glass tubing was used for temperatures below (600°C and for higher temperatures clear fused quartz was satisfactory. After appropriate heat treatment at various ternperatures, the specimen ampoules were furnace cooled, air cooled or quenched by crushing under distilled water. This allowed a range of cooling velocities from less than one degree C per set to greater than 1,0oo°C per sec. THE separation of minerals by flotation can be regarded as a rate process, with the extraction of any one mineral determined by its flotation rate, and the grade of concentrate by the relative rates for all the minerals. So regarded, the significant variables for the process are those that control the rates. These variables are of two types, the first describing the ore and its physical and chemical treatment prior to flotation and the second characterizing the separation process in the cells. This paper will examine the variation in rates for a group of separations, will show that a simple rate law appears to govern, and will consider the relation of the control variables to the rates. The use of rate constants for evaluation of performance and efficiency will be discussed.

The effects of solutes on the distribution of two-dimensional configurations of grains in zone-refined tin have been studied. When solutes with partition coefficients (ko) greater than unity are added, three-sided pains become more prevalent and the growth law changes. It is shown by electron-Probe micro-analysis that a solute buildup occurs ahead of a moving grain boundary when ko > 1. It has been found recently1, 2 that solutes with partition coefficients greater than unity have a larger retarding effect on grain growth than solutes with k, less than unity. ko is defined as the ratio of the concentration of solute in the solid to the concentration of solute in the liquid with which the solid is in equilibrium. Niessen and winegard2 have suggested that this effect is probably due to the complex shape changes which occur during the process of grain growth and that no theory based on single boundary motion3-5 can explain the results. They suggested that the dissociation of the unstable fourfold junction was delayed in alloys where ko was greater than 1 because the boundaries at the junction had to move into a region of high solute concentration. If indeed this mechanism were correct, it was felt that not only would the dissociation of fourfold junctions be affected by the solute buildup ahead of the boundaries, but the collapse of three-sided grains would be impaired. These combined effects would naturally lead to a modification in the distribution of the number of sides per grain seen on a two-dimensional section. The present investigation was undertaken to test these hypotheses by examining the grain-growth process in detail. EXPERIMENTS The Distribution of Grain Configurations in Zone-Refined Tin as Seen on a Two-Dimensional Section. Following the method of Bolling and Winegard,6 zone-refined tin was cast into button-shaped specimens and, subsequently, plastically deformed under a drop hammer at room temperature. The resulting flat coin-shaped samples were annealed at 200°C, some for 50 sec and others for 100 sec. The specimens were then examined to determine the distribution of the number of sides per grain, i.e., the num- ber of crystals adjacent to any particular grain in the section. For simplicity, the grains were classified as three-sided, four-sided, and so forth; this concept is schematically illustrated in Fig. 1. As indicated by smith,' it was necessary to examine every grain within an enclosed area to obtain a proper distribution of the relative frequency of each type. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1015) THE gold precipitate from the zinc-dust presses in the cyanide plant of the Alaska-Treadwell Gold Mining Co.; Treadwell, Alaska, is treated, in the refinery adjoining, by the Tavener or lead-smelting method. About. 3 or 4 tons of this precipitate are produced monthly having a gold assay value of $40,000 to $60,000 per ton. It was formerly the practice to treat the by-products from this process, consisting of 2 tons of slag, 300 lb. of matte, 500 lb. of refinery refuse, flue dust, etc., in a 24-in. water-jacketed blast furnace. This' practice was discontinued in the summer of 1914 by reason of the difficulty of keeping the lead-well open when treating a high-grade lead product; of preventing the loss of gold in the flue dust; and of avoiding injury to the general health of the refinery operators; a plain single-phase electric furnace was substituted for the blast furnace. The furnace was constructed from an old steel acid drum by cutting off the top and introducing a cable, made from strands of bare copper wire, through the bottom and spreading the strands out fan-shaped on the inside of the drum. Powdered graphite, obtained by grinding up old crucibles, mixed with 10 per cent. cement, was tamped wet into the bottom of the drum, around and completely covering the copper wires. The graphite was carried up to the bottom of the furnace, or lead-well, and acted as the lower electrode. The sides were built up of ordinary firebrick forming a melting chamber 14 in. in diameter by 20 in. high.

DuriKg the past two or three years I have seen statements regarding the first discovery of fullers' earth in this country that seem to require correction or modification. One appears again in the Mineral Resources of the United States for 1909, part II., p. 738, where it is said that 'fullers' earth was firat discovered in the United States at Quincy, Fla., in 1893." In this connection the following bit of unpublished history concerning fullers' earth in the State of Arkansas is worthy of attention. In April, 1891, when I was State Geologist of Arkansas, a Swede named John Olsen, formerly a copper-miner in Michigan, but then living south of Little Rock, brought me a sample of what he thought mas fullers' earth. He reported that it was from near the town of Alexander, the locality being 1 S. 13 W., section 8, SW. quarter of the SE. quarter. My chemist, Dr. R. N. GERMANIUM, once the metals industries' unwanted step-child, has suddenly blossomed into importance. As late as 1951 textbooks failed to mention it and the metal was considered no more than a nuisance that interfered with the electrolysis of zinc. Eagle-Pitcher is the only producer of Germanium, used in power rectifiers and the new transistors. Its basic quality is that its ability to carry current can be changed, and a current flowing through it can be controlled. Germanium is sold by Eagle-Pitcher for about $340 a lb, not bad for a metal that only a few years ago was totally ignored. Eagle-Pitcher gets germanium, cadmium and gallium by roasting the zinc concentrate to convert the sulphides to oxides, then adding coal and salt to the crude zinc oxide and sintering at a high temperature. The oxides of germanium, cadmium and gallium are converted to chlorides. Cadmium and germanium chlorides volatilize, and are gathered for additional processing. The important step is the distillation of germanium tetrachloride.

This paper was prepared at the request of Capt. A. F. Lucas, Chairman of the Institute's Committee on Petroleum and Gas, as a preliminary discussion of the fuel oils which are used-in the Southwest, giving their composition, uses, prices, etc. Should it afterward be found desirable, these observations may be extended over a larger area. In this connection, J suggest that samples of all kinds of fuel oils, including various tars, from all over the country, be collected and sent to some testing laboratory for examination. We would be glad to extend the facilities of the laboratory of the Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology, at the University of Texas, for this purpose, and to do the work free of all expenses. After such examinations are made and the results classified and studied, it would be possible to suggest specifications under which fuel oils should be purchased, and to arrive at some conclusions respecting the uniformity of such specifications, with due allowance for climatic and other more or less local conditions. While such specifications do not now depart from a common standard anything like as much as specifications for illuminating oils do, yet there are discrepancies which should not exist. Some of these discrepancies are of lessening importance, due to the pronounced tendency to distill every crude oil that can be distilled with profit, and to send residues into the market for fuel oil. Residues from the refineries are of a more uniform chemical composition and physical nature than many of the crude oils that go direct into the fuel market. The lower flash-point oils are disappearing from the fuel trade and in place of them we are getting oils that do not flash below 220° F., nor burn under 320° F. In the Southwest, it has not been long since we had fuel oils that flashed at as low as 110° F., and the average flash point over a considerable period was 151° F. Now we are using oil that flashes at about 30° lower than the former burning point, which was 256° F. In other words, the flash point has risen, on the average, 100°; and the burning point about 75°.

In this paper, oxidation potentials measured in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferro-cyanide, and ferricyanide and ethyl xanthate at various values of pH are related to flotation response. Eh-pH diagrams are presented to show that the formation of surface ferric ferrocyanide is probably responsible for depression when cyanide is added. The influence of cyanide on the depression of pyrite with xanthates as collector has been the subject of a number of investigations,'-6 and several theories on the mechanism of depression have evolved from these studies. Wark and Cox7 and Gaudin8 have suggested that the depressing effect is due to a competition of cyanide ion with xanthate ion for the surface. Cook and his colleagues9-11 have explained this phenomenon in terms of competition between hydrocyanic acid and xanthic acid. Sutherland 12 has shown that although both of these theories accurately describe the relation between pH value and cyanide addition at constant collector addition, they fail to describe the relation between pH value and the amount of collector required to cause flotation. Taggart 13 suggested that depression in these systems is due to the formation of a reaction product between ferric ion at the pyrite surface and ferrocyanide ion derived from solution. Majumdar4,6 has attempted to prove this hypothesis by measuring the contact angles of pyrite in the presence of 25 mg per liter ethyl xanthate and different concentrations of potassium ferrocyanide and ferricyanide. In all cases the contact angles were quite high up to pH 10. These results indicate that pyrite should not be depressed by either potassium ferrocyanide or ferricyanide. In view of these facts, Majumdar has assumed that the compound Fe(CN)2 forms at the surface. Gründer and Bornl4 have stated that depression may be due to the formation of the compound K2Fe(II)Fe(CN)6 at the pyrite-solution interface. This compound is thought to be an interaction product between the K2Fe(CN)6-2 ion from solution and the Fe++ ion at the pyrite surface and, accordingly, K4Fe(CN)6 should depress pyrite at least as effectively as KCN. This was proven experimentally, but there was no simple relation between the depression of pyrite and the concentration of either KCN or K4Fe(CN)6 in solution. In view of the many mechanisms that have been proposed for pyrite depression by cyanide, it is apparent that a clear understanding of the phenomena occurring in these systems is lacking. One reason for this may be the fact that the species responsible for pyrite flotation in the presence of xanthate is not the xan-thate ion but rather dixanthogen.15 Since the oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen is dependent on the oxidation potential of the solution, it would seem that knowledge of these potentials would be a requisite to understanding the pyrite-xanthate-cyanide system. It is the object of this paper to measure both the oxidation potential and pH of the pyrite systems in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferrocyanide, and ferricyanide and xanthate and to relate these values to flotation response. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND 'TECHNIQUES In the experiments discussed here, pure potassium ethyl xanthate was used as collector, and reagent grade potassium cyanide, potassium ferrocyanide, and potassium ferricyanide were used as depressants. Reagent grade HC1 and KOH were added for pH adjustment. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in all experimental work. Two natural samples of pyrite were used in the investigation. Sample preparation for flotation included dry grinding with a mortar and pestle and sizing the product to 100 x 200 mesh. Prior to flotation, a 0.75-gm sample of pyrite was added to a solution containing a known amount of depressant at the desired pH value, and the system was conditioned for 4 min. Following this, a known amount of collector was added and the system was conditioned for another 4 min. Deformation studies have been conducted at room temperature on single crystals of magnesium and magnesium alloys with thorium and with lithium. Single crystals oriented to suppress shear on the easily activated basal slip systems were deformed by plane-strain compression. Compression along the C axis was accommodated by {1011} banding. Compression perpendicular to the unconstrained c axis activated {1012} twinning, and, after virtually complete twinning, deformation continued by {1011) banding in the twinned material. Compression perpendicular to the constrained c axis was accommodated by the simultaneous operation of (1012) twinning against the constraint and (1011 ) banding. Although this orientation was favorable for {1010)(1210) prism and {1011}(1~10) pyramidal slip, these modes were not observed in pure magnesium or in Mg-0.5 pct Th. However, {10i0)(1~10) prism slip was observed in crystals of Mg-4 pct Li during compression perpendicular to the constrained c axis. Fracture in all materials occurred parallel to (1124) or {l~il) depending on the orientation and composition of the specimen. THE mechanical behavior of the hcp metals is strongly anisotropic. Although several slip systems have been reported the slip is cpmmonly in the directions of closest packing, the (1210),' and this does not produce strains parallel to the c axis. Hence the inherent anisotropy. The deformation mode most easily activated in magnesium at room temperature is (0001)(1210)- basal slip. Also {1010}(1~10) prism slip and {1011)(1210) pyramidal slip have been reported, primarily at elevated temperatures.2"4 However, at room temperature the shear stresses to activate the prism and pyramidal modes are roughly a hundredfold greater than that required for basal slip.'j4 Thus prism and pyramidal slip may be expected only under special conditions of loading. Strains normal to the basal plane can be produced by twinning, however. Many twinning modes have been reported for magnesium,' with (1012) twinning the most common and relatively easy to activate. Magnesium can deform by (1012) twinning when stressed along the c axis jn tension, but not in compression. In contrast, (1011) twinning is activated by compression along the c axis and not by tension. In addition to primary twinning, secondary twinning or slip can occur within the reoriented material of primary twins.' In general at least five independent shear systems must be active to bring about an arbitrary shape change such as that in the individual grains of a deforming polycrystalline material.' Because basal slip can_ provide only two independent shear systems and (1012) twinning can only accommodate an extension of the c axis, other deformation modes must be active in magnesium for an arbitrary shape change to occur. The purpose of this investigation has therefore been to study the various deformation modes in magnesium at room temperature, with special emphasis on those modes that are less easily activated. The effect of the alloying elements, thorium and lithium, has also been investigated. In polycrystalline aggregates, unambiguous identification of deformation modes is extremely difficult and the direct evaluation of the resolved shear stresses to activate them is not feasible. On the other hand, uni-axial tension and compression experiments on single crystals may not activate some of the- deformation modes because basal slip and/or {1012) twinning cannot be suppressed in most orientations. However, it should be possible to activate all possible deformation modes using oriented single crystals and plane-strain compression. Identification of active deformation systems and evaluation of the resolved shear stresses required to activate them should be facilitated. Wonsiewicz and Backofen have recently completed an investigation of the plasticity of pure magnesium crystals at various temperatures utilizing plane-strain compression and selected crystal orientations. This technique has also been used in the present work. The seven orientations selected for study are indicated in Table I. Plane-strain compression along the c axis (orientations A and B) should activate some deformation mode _other than basal, prism, or pyramidal slip, or (1012) twinning. In orientations C and D, prism or pyramidal slip would be expected to take place. When the compressive load is applied perpendicular to an unconstrained c axis (orientations E and F) the three slip modes should be suppressed but not (10i2) twinning. In orientation G, basal slip should occur.

This paper discusses some of the fundamental physical and chemical characteristics of coal in Illinois that affect its preparation for the market. At the present time preparation consists almost entirely of sizing and hand-picking. The washing of coal has almost entirely disappeared from the state. This is a rather startling fact when one considers that in the year 1908 Illinois outranked all other states in the quantity of coal washed and a few years later, in 1912, 85 washing plants were reported. Two reasons are apparent for this change. One, which is probably the most important, is that immense areas of comparatively clean coal were opened; the other is that many of the early washing plants were inefficient, so that washed coal was looked upon with disfavor in many trade centers. Objectives of Operators Some of the outstanding preparation aims being given due consideration by operating men are: 1. The greatest possible production of lump and domestic sizes which bring in the market at least $1 per ton more than the fine sizes or screenings. 2. Efficient screen sizing with as little breakage as is consistent with economical operation. 3. The removal of extraneous ash and sulfur. 4. Utilization of low-priced screenings. 5. Suppression of dust in domestic coal shipments. Preparation Underground To get the greatest possible production of the larger sizes, preparation must start at the face. Improvements in blasting and loading have increased the sizes larger than 2 in. by as much as 20 per cent. at some mines. In connection with some recent professional work in the coalfields of Western Pennsylvania, with special reference to results of coking operations, I was asked to compile a statement giving the estimated cost of mining coal and manufacturing coke at two hypothetical plants of 500 ovens each, giving the relative yield of coal in coke at each plant; and, upon the average number of working days in each of the past five years, from 1899 to 1903, together with average selling price of coke at the ovens, to prepare an estimate of the relative commercial returns in each district. What seemed at first sight to be a comparatively simple proposition, involving only the ordinary elements of mining and coking costs, became complicated by the lack of standard published records of mining costs and sales, which would be applicable to the subject at issue. Upon searching through the usual channels of Government publicatious and the files of our technical societies and mining periodicals, I was surprised to note the absence of fundamental factors that would approximately meet the case in point. The very elaborate and interesting statistics annually published by the National Government' do not supply the required data for the following reasons:—1. Being reported by arbitrary districts, the average values are too general to be applied to special fields. 2. The value of coal charged to the ovens is apparently based upon the regional average value of the coal if sold in the market, and not upon the cost of production. 3. The production of petroleum in Mexico during 1933 totaled 33,430,-000 bbl., or 625,000 bbl. more than in the previous year. This is the first time since the peak in 1921 that the declining trend of output has been reversed. Drilling activity in the proven areas of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the Northern fields increased substantially during the year. The completion of two producers in the Poza Rica area south of Tuxpam and a shallow gas well in the Camargo district near the American border were the outstanding features of development. Late in September the Northern fields and the oil port of Tampico were swept by a hurricane followed by floods which caused loss of life and heavy damage to the City of Tampico and to transportation, tank farms and refineries. For three weeks, owing to the silting of the Tampico Bar and destruction of terminal facilities, no oil could be shipped for export. About half the wells of the Northern fields were closed for a period of 30 days. The prompt and effective steps taken by General Macias, chief of military operations, prevented the spread of epidemics and any serious aftermath of the catastrophe.

INTRODUCTION ISOTHERMAL transformation, or "austempering," of a carbon-containing austenite at elevated temperatures yields so-called "intermediate products." Their structure and properties are, for a given hardness, rather different from those of "tempered martensite" obtained on conventional quenching and tempering.1 Several investigators2,3 have found that for high carbon and slightly alloyed steels the intermediate products formed at temperatures close to that of the martensite reaction possess strength properties superior to those of tempered martensite. The structure of these low temperature, intermediate products is generally acicular (bainite) but clearly different from that of martensite. However, at higher austempering temperatures, between 1000 and 1300°F (540 and 700°C) carbon steels were found to exhibit a rather low ductility.4-5 Thus notch bar tensile tests showed the ratio between notch strength and regular tensile strength to decrease with increasing austempering temperature. For ductilities below a few percent this notch strength ratio is a measure of ductility, according to investigations on low alloy steels.6-7 Furthermore the presence of intermediate products formed unintentionally on quenching was considered as responsible for the low ductility and impact energy of some heat treated steels.8 These intermediate products could result from partial transformation at the so-called "nose-temperature" where the rate of the transformation is a maximum. Tempering improved such mixtures of martensite and intermediate products, their properties approaching those of tempered martensite of equal hardness. The following investigation constitutes an attempt to determine certain strength properties of a partially austempered and subsequently quenched low alloy steel, namely, a chromium steel (SAE 5140). The structures formed by such a treatment should consist of a mixture of intermediate products formed on austempering and a martensite formed on oil quenching from the austempering temperature. It was intended, by varying the austempering time, to vary the quantity of the intermediate products between zero and 100 pct. The austempering temperature of 860°F was selected after extensive preliminary tests close to the nose-temperature. Austempering at this temperature yielded an acicular intermediate product. Additional tests under less exacting conditions were made for an austempering temperature of 950°F where the intermediate product appeared to be very fine pearlite.
