It has been known for many years that when a wire is moved in a magnetic field, an electromotive force is developed which is proportional to the rate at which the wire is moved in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic intensity and to the magnetic intensity itself. If the ends of the wire are connected to a current indicator, the current behaves exactly as though the source of electromotive force were a galvanic cell. If a wire is wound circularly and rotated uniformly around a diameter not parallel to the intensity, the current flowing through the wire will be alternating of sinusoidal shape. If, instead of a single loop, there are several turns wound in a short helix, the electromotive force developed will be approximately proportional to the number of turns, the area of the helix and to the speed of rotation. The maximum electromotive force will be developed when the axis of rotation is perpendicular to the field; if this is not so, only the component of the intensity that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation is effective. This is the principle of the usual earth inductor. With a few turns of wire and comparatively slow rotation, it is possible to produce a considerable deflection of a galvanometer. If two similar coils are rotated together at two different points for which the magnetic field intensities perpendicular to the axes of rotation are different, the electromotive forces developed will each depend on its corresponding intensity and be a measure of that intensity. The constitutional diagram presented herein is relatively simple. Complete mutual solid solubility exists for an interval below the solidus line, a continuous curve with a flat minimum near 22 pct Cb and 1740°C. Upon cooling, the solid solution breaks up, except at the columbium-rich side, from two causes: zirconium-rich alloys transform under the influence of the ß-a transformation in zirconium; alloys of intermediate composition decompose into two solid solutions below 1000°C. The combined effect is the formation of a eutectoid at a temperature of 610°C and a composition of 17.5 pct Cb. The eutectoid horizontal extends from 6.5 to 87.0 pct Cb. Some age hardening effects have been observed in the zirconium-rich alloys but the positions of the solvus lines remain uncertain. IN recent years, zirconium has been produced in much larger quantities than were available previously. Correspondingly, the incentive for studying its alloy systems has increased, as the number of recent publications on alloy systems testifies. However, only a partial diagram of the Zr-Cb system has been published and relatively few references have been made to alloys of the two metals. Hodge' investigated the Zr-Cb system up to about 25 pct Cb. His data on melting points were not sufficiently numerous to distinguish with certainty between the alternatives of a narrow eutec-tic horizontal and a wide flat minimum in the solidus curve. Although Hodge considered his results on transformations in the solid state to be only tentative, he suggested that the eutectoid in the zirconium-rich alloys lay at about 625 °C and 10 pct Cb and estimated that the solubility of colum-bium in zirconium at 625 °C was near 6 pct. According to Simcoe and Mudge,2 less than 0.5 pct Cb is soluble in zirconium at 800°C. These authors observed an increased strength in both the 0.5 and I pct Cb alloys made with hafnium-containing zirconium. According to Keeler,3 the strength of zirconium is increased by addition of columbium to a content of at least 3 pct. Keeler' also observed a maximum in hardness at about 10 atomic pct Cb and commented on the brittleness of alloys of this composition. Anderson, Hayes, Rober-son, and Kroll5 investigated the tensile properties of Zr-Cb alloys containing 5.1 and 12.9 pct Cb at room temperature and at 343°C. The 12.9 pct alloy had a high tensile strength at room temperature but also a low percentage of elongation. All alloys had high elongation at 343 °C. Littona measured strength and elongation values of annealed alloys containing up to 27.5 pct Cb and found low elongation values for all of the alloys of high columbium content. Some observations on the resistance of Zr-Cb alloys to corrosion in water at high temperature have been published by Lustman, De Paul, Glatter, and Thomas' who found that additions of columbium up to 1 pct had only a minor effect on the corrosion resistance of zirconium. Preparation of the Alloys Raw Material: Zirconium of a relatively good grade was available for making the alloys. It was obtained as scrap pieces that had been left over from an operation that included production by the iodide process, melting under a protecting atmosphere, and fabrication to plates. The individual pieces had hardness values of 24 to 32 Ra and a typical analysis is shown in Table I. The columbium also was scrap trimmed from sheets. It was furnished by the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. and had a high ductility but its analysis was known only approximately. The metal probably contained about 0.5 pct Ta, perhaps 0.25 pct C, and a few hundredths percent each of iron, silicon, and titanium. Melting: The alloys were melted in a tungsten-electrode copper-crucible arc furnace similar to units that have been described recently in the metallurgical journals.'.' The crucible of this furnace is provided with a cavity in which a getter charge can be melted before the melting of the alloy charges. Hardness measurements on the ingots indicate that the getter charge takes up a considerable fraction of the oxygen and nitrogen from the helium atmosphere of the furnace. The alloys used in the investigation are given with their intended compositions, hardness, and melting points in Table 11. Fabrication: All alloys of the Zr-Cb system appear to be amenable to fabrication. At least, all of the compositions listed in Table II could be reduced to wires in a rotary swaging machine. The starting material was either slabs cut from ingots and ground by hand to rough cylinders or narrow strips trimmed from sheets made by cold rolling slabs. However, not all of the alloys could be fabricated satisfactorily by the same method. From 0 to 4 pct Cb and from 20 to 30 pct Cb or more, the alloys could be swaged cold from ¼ in. cylinders to 0.80 mm wires with only one intermediate annealing, sometimes with none. The mechanical properties of unidirectionally solidified A1(rich)-Mg and A1(rich)-Cu castings containing up to 15 wt pct solute have been determined with re -spect to the volume fraction of interdendritic eutectic. Pioperties were determined in the directions pumllel and Perpendicular to that of solidification; the volume fraction of eutectic was varied between the "as-cast" and equilibrizcm amounts by approperiate heat treatment following solidification. The principles of fiber strengthened composites and dispersion strengthened materials are adapted to explain the mechanical properties of these castings. It is generally accepted that castings often have inferior mechanical properties when con~pared to wrought products. However, there is little quantitative data available concerning the factors which make apparently sound castings weak and/or brittle. The relative ease and inexpensiveness of the casting process have always been attractive and, therefore, an understanding of the factors which contribute to the mechanical properties of castings would seem desirable. Such an understanding may lead to an improvement in the mechanical properties to an extent where castings would become competitive in applications where presently only wrought products are considered to have the requisite properties. Such an understanding could also improve the reliability of present cast products. Much of the recent research on castings has centered about determining the extent of segregation in cast alloys. Macrosegregation, particularly inverse segregation, has been studied in some detail 1-8 and a considerable understanding of microsegregation has been obtained.9'10 The effect of solidification rate on dendrite spacing and on the amount of interdendritic eutectic in binary alloys has been established, particularly for Al(rich)-Cu alloys.""0 However, the extension of these ideas to relate the amount of interdendritic eutectic, concentration gradients, micro-segregation, dendrite spacings, and so forth, to the rnechanical properties has been limited. Dean and spear" have related the mechanical properties of an Al-Si-Mg alloy, A356-T62, to the dendrite spacing and have shown that the mechanical properties improve with decreasing dendrite spacing. Passmore et al.12 have shown that annealing at high temperature improves the mechanical properties of Al(rich)-Cu al- loys and Archer and Kempf 13 have shown that an Al-1 pct Mg-1.75 pct Si alloy behaves in a similar manner. Ahearn and Quigley 14 have shown that high temperature homogenization also enhances the mechanical properties of an SAE 4330 steel. However, in the above investigations, no underlying reasons were suggested for the improvement in mechanical properties. The purpose of the present investigation is to relate the mechanical properties of castings to some of the solichfication variables and to derive some equations by which calculations of the mechanical properties may be attempted. In particular, the effect of the amount of interdendritic eutectic and the effect of stress direction with respect to that of solidification on the mechanical properties will be considered. The Al(rich)-Mg and Al(rich)-Cu binary alloy systems were chosen for study. The A1-Mg system was chosen because its constitutional relationships are such that large volunles of eutectic (up to 24 vol pct) may be obtained in the as-cast condition and then be completely dissolved by subsequent heat treatment at about 440°C. This allows a comprehensive study relating the mechanical properties of castings to the amount of interdendritic eutectic. Also the Al(rich)-Mg eutectic is almost a single phase 15 which should make the experimental results more amenable to theoretical interpretation and calculation. The A1-Cu system was chosen for study because of the large amount of related information available concerning segregation, dendrite spacing, and so forth. Unidirectionally solidified castings were used throughout the investigation so that the effect of solidification direction with respect to the direction of applied stress could be determined. THEORETICAL It is well known that upon solidification of binary alloy castings, the nonequilibrium amount of eutectic which forms is given by 10 where fe o is the weight fraction of eutectic, Cs is the solid solubility of solute at the eutectic temperature, k is the equilibrium partition coefficient, and C, is the average composition of the alloy. In the development of Eq. [I], it is assumed that the effects of inverse segregation and diffusion in the solid are negligible, and that no porosity is present. If the casting is homogenized at a high temperature for a long period of time, some (or all) of the eutectic is dissolved and the amount of eutectic for this "equilibrium" condition may be calculated directly from the constitutional diagram. The low-rank coals containing 10 to 50 pct natural bed moisture represent over half of the tonnage reserve of the available solid fuels of the United States, but only about 2 pct of United States coal production is derived from these fuels. Increased utilization of these large reserves will result if the bed moisture can be removed at the mine in high-speed low-cost processes. This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of the factors affecting high-speed drying of coal dusts. The time required to heat particles of coal is proportional to the square of their diameter, and it is calculated that the probable time in minutes is equal to 6D2. In other words, a 1/16 in. coal particle should be heated to drying temperature in 1.5 to 2.0 sec. Likewise, 1/8 in. particles should be heated in about 6 sec. The net heat required to dry subbituminous coal and lignite varies from 240 to 375 Btu per pound, depending upon the moisture removed, and this heat can be obtained from 42 to 61 cu ft of hot gases at 600°F. The necessary heat also can be obtained from 7.5 to 11 cu ft of gas at 2000°F. A description of the design and operation of a pilot plant for flash drying coal dusts is presented. This plant dries 1/16 in. by 0 coal dust in suspension in 1.5 to 2 sec with 600°F gas at a rate of 1300 lb per hour per square foot of column area and operates continuously at an efficiency of about 85 pct. The design and operation of another pilot plant for drying 1/8 in. by 0 coal dusts Is also described. This unit dries coal in the fluidized state using the sensible heat of gases introduced at 2000°F and processes coal at a rate of about 1500 Ib per hour per square foot of grate area at 85 to 90 pct efficiency. Over 90 pct of the bed moisture of low-rank coal dusts can be removed by the methods described. The heating value of lignite can be increased 45 pet and that if subbituminous coal 25 pct in a few seconds. The physical and chemical properties of coal dusts before and after drying are presented in the report, and it is shown that the bulk density of the dried coal is equal to that of the raw coal. This phenomenon makes it possible to ship 25 to 45 pct more heat in a railroad car with consequent savings in freight costs. Introduction For several years the Subbituminous Coal and Lignite Section of the Coal Branch of the Bureau of Mines at Golden, Colo., has been concerned with upgrading low-rank coals by removal of natural bed moisture. These fuels contain 10 to 50 pct total moisture, which reduces their industrial value considerably. In 1938, investigations were initiated in cooperation with the University of North Dakota to study drying of lignite by the Fleissner process with heat derived from high-pressure saturated steam. Secretary E. H. Benjamin, of the California Miners' Association, has proposed and begun, in co-operation with the testing laboratory of the University of California, at Berkeley, a series of tests which should prove of great interest and practical use to all persons making extensive application of steel wire cables, and especially to miners who run them in deep mines. Mr. Benjamin is endeavoring to obtain pieces of cable both new, and old and worn, from every deep mine of importance on the Pacific Coast, together with all the data obtainable concerning their manufacture and particular use. Pieces from each sample will be broken ill the laboratory before mentioned: and as far as possible the effects of winding around drums or pulleys ; of sudden starting and stopping when loaded; of heavy shocks, and of the general wear and tear of the cables, will be ascertained by these tests. The Olsen testing-machine of 200,000 pounds capacity will be used to break the cables, and the rupturing force, in different instances, will be applied slowly and also rapidly, in order to make the tests comparable as far as possible with the practical use of the cables themselves. All information and data available should be obtained for each specimen sent to the laboratory, the name of the manufacturer, the date of making, strength of cable when new and unrusted, as well as the circumstances and conditions of the practical use of the cable. Having this information before us, we shall be able to tell, approximately at least, the effects of age, rust, wear and tear, shocks, etc.; and perhaps be enabled to draw the line of limitation beyond which it would be no longer safe to use a cable of known manufacture. Moreover, by means of such tests we may, perhaps, he able to recommend worn cables for other uses, less severe in character, thereby prolonging the life of their effective usefulness. The purpose of this investigation was to prepare high-purity iron-carbon alloys, to determine as precisely as possible the A3(GOS), the Acm(SE), and the A1(PSK) transformation temperatures in the meta-stable iron-iron carbide system (up to 1.4 per cent C), and to study the influence of carefully controlled and constant rates of heating and cooling (1/8 to 2o C. per minute) upon the transformation temperature and upon the resulting microstructure. Apart from the general metallurgical importance attending the completion of such a task, it will be noted that highly precise transformation temperatures are of interest and importance in the thermodynamic study of this system1. Several determinations of the iron-iron carbide diagram have been made2. These suffer generally from the low purity of the alloys used, and from the application of methods of investigation of low sensitivity. Attempts to compare and weight the many data available in an effort to construct as accurate a diagram as possible have, in the main, been unsuccessful. In general, the wide differences in the results of different workers, the lack of complete analytical data, the omission of important details relating to the heat-treatment of the alloys, and the meager description of the methods of investigation applied, render such a process of averaging nearly meaningless. It may be seen from the summaries by Epstein2 and Körber and Oelsenl that variations as great as 30' C. exist in the reported data on the A3 temperatures in iron-carbon alloys. Fortunately, the Aa temperature in pure iron is now known to be 910" C. ± 1° C.3 The best recent work on iron-carbon alloys is that of Esser4 on hypoeutectoid steels and that of Sato5 on both hypoeutectoid and hyper-eutectoid steels. Esser made a dilatometric and magnetic study of iron and iron-carbon alloys containing 0.06 to 0.86 per cent C, for which a high purity is claimed. Presumably the electrolytic iron was reasonably pure, but the alloys contained considerable impurities, on the average totaling 0.35 per

INTRODUCTION This paper deals with a procedure for planning the mining of an orebody for which cross-sections, plans, grade of ore, and a geological estimate of the ore reserve have been prepared. The procedure begins with the preliminary selection of a mining method or methods on which an engineering evaluation will be carried out. The engineering evaluation is described in three parts: Conceptual Studies Engineering Studies Detailed Design An overall planning model is presented, plus an expanded model for the Engineering Study Throughout the discussion of the planning procedure, reference is made to three bulk mining methods, including block caving, sublevel caving, and longhole sublevel stoping, including a summary of the main characteristics of each of these mining methods. The planning model is designed for a longhole sublevel stoping method, but with modification, will apply to other methods. PRELIMINARY SELECTION OF A MINING METHOD To experienced mining engineers, identification of the nominal mining method for a given orebody normally involves a large measure of judgement. The geological data is reviewed to determine the configuration of the orebody, including size, shape, dip, grade, and metal distribution. Geotechnical data is considered, including the competence of the ore and host rock, faults, fracture patterns, groundwater, and the potential for in situ stresses. Geographical data, including the natural and societal conditions, are evaluated for their effect upon the mining method, and finally, economic data, basically defined as the value of the ore in the ground, but more specifically, including grade of mineable ore, distribution of ore grade throughout the orebody, and metallurgical recovery, will have a bearing on the nominal method selected. Preliminary evaluation of these factors will result in the elimination of the obviously inappropriate mining methods, leaving some method or methods for further, more detailed study. Since ore does not occur in simple geometric shapes, the method selected for more detailed study will require some variation to the standard. A few key factors will bear heavily on the selection and provide a basis for the most realistic choice. Geological Data The configuration of an orebody defined by the horizontal and vertical dimensions, the dip and strike, and the possibility of repetitive occurrences will have the major influence on the selection of the mining method. For bulk mining methods, the dip of the orebody should be steep, or the orebody must be thick so that gravity can be utilized to deliver fragmented ore to a central gathering area. Geotechnical Data The geotechnical data will be studied in greater detail when the nominal mining method has been selected and the engineering evaluation is undertaken. However, some basic initial information must be available. The structural strength of the ore and host rock, including the effect on it of faulting, fracturing, and insitu stresses, must be known. Data from exploration drilling and examination of drill core will assist in the preliminary assessment of these factors. Highly fractured ground may suggest a caving method of mining for certain orebody configurations, whereas highly competent or strong ore might indicate that for a similar configuration, longhole sublevel stoping will more likely succeed. Data obtained on groundwater from exploration drilling will be considered to determine if it can be controlled, or if it will represent a long term major expense or a hazard for which no control is possible.

The electrolytic zinc plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. is in Government Gulch, at Silver King, Shoshone County, Idaho, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, about one mile from the Bunker Hill smelter and about three miles from Kellogg. The Sullivan Mining Co., which owns both the zinc plant and the Star mine, is itself owned jointly by the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co, and the Hecla Mining Company. The Tainton high-density, high-acid process is used at this plant, therefore some parts of its flowsheet differ markedly from those of electrolytic plants using the low-density process. While it is a custom plant and has treated a variety of zinc concentrates originating from various sources in a number of states, it has obtained its main supply of zinc concentrates chiefly from the zinc-bearing ores of the Coeur d'A1ene mining district, of which the principal important sources have been the Bunker Hill and Star mines. Thus the main feed has been zinc concentrates obtained from complex lead-zinc-silver ores. For the year of 1935 the concentrates had the following composition: water, 9.5 per cent; Zn, 50.6; Pb, 3.3; Fe, 9.4; S, 31.0; Cu, 0.2; insoluble, 2.9. Flowsheet The concentrates are delivered to the plant in railroad cars, which discharge into storage bins directly under the track. Bottom-dump cars are dropped directly into the bins while a slip scraper, pulled by an air tugger hoist, is used to empty box cars. There are five storage bins for concentrates, each of approximately 300 tons capacity. At the bottom of each bin there are individual belt feeders that discharge onto a common conveyor belt, which in turn discharges to another belt that carries the concentrate onto a weightometer belt for weighing. Immediately after the weighing, the crushed oversize return from the roasters is added to the load on the belt and then the ground-up sweepings, lumps and roaster cleanings. An electromagnet at the end of this conveyor removes tramp iron from the feed. The belt discharges to a set of 30 by 12-in. rolls, which break up lumps or frozen chunks of concentrate, etc. Beneath the rolls there is a screw conveyor, which conveys the roll discharge to a

(written discussion *).-Professor Howe, with characteristic thoroughness, has demonstrated that Professor Jeffries' "Reversed Inheritance" explanation of the case in question is contrary to fact, as shown by many previous observers. Since the photographs were my own, I feel it my duty to say a few words in discussion. In the first place, it is to be noted that these photographs were of pressed powders, and although many of Professor Jeffries' original experiments were made from this kind of material, the nature of such a specimen must of necessity be different from that of the fused metal, although the same basic laws of grain growth may apply in both cases, certain factors, such as the rate of change, for example, are undoubtedly different in each case. That the 1000° C. grain is a natal grain is evident from its appearance contrasted with the more perfectly formed, though smaller, grains in the 1300° C. photograph. I am not sure that Professor Howe's explanation of the formation of this grain is necessarily the correct one, although it agrees with. Stead and Carpenter's results. I am inclined to think that this grain may have been formed on heating, because I have been able to produce grains of the shape and magnitude of Stead and Carpenter's grains by heating to 850° C. pure electrolytic iron, which has been subjected to a strain gradient. On reheating to 1300° C., the mobility being so much greater, the individual crystals had time for unhampered re-arrangement and growth after their second refinement on passing Ac3, so that we have in this case a true fused metal condition in which the individual crystals are arranged in true equiaxed grains of a size consistent with their high temperature anneal. In this case the grains are equiaxed, inheriting none of the columnar tendencies of the previous grain, because they were not affected by any strain gradient, except possibly some accidental local gradients. It seems to me that the introduction of pressed powders into the discussion of grain growth, where allotropic changes take place, unnecessarily complicates an already complicated problem.

Some of US have been impressed with the need for a better understanding of the future place of the engineer in the petroleum industry. In academic work we are continually asked to advise students as to the opportunities in different directions, to guide them in their selection of professions, and it would be extremely helpful to those in academic lines of work to have the opinion of engineers from the industry relative to the need for petroleum engineers. IS the industry going to require a continually growing number of engineers in the future years, or have we perhaps reached equilibrium in that regard ? In anticipation of this meeting, I undertook to canvass opinion among a number of engineers of my acquaintance and I have been rather astonished to learn that the expenditure on engineering salaries in the producing branch of the oil industry is extremely low. I have figures from eight or 10 of the larger oil companies and it seems to be a fair statement on the basis of these figures to say that the average American oil company is devoting less than 2 per cent. of its gross expenditures in oil production to the payment of engineering salaries. A few examples will be of interest. I shall not mention names of individual companies, but one large Mid-Continent company is spending slightly less than 1 per cent. of its gross expenditure—that is, less than 1 per cent. of the total expenditure in the producing department—on engineering salaries and about as much on engineering research, which might properly be regarded as a phase of its engineering work. Another Mid-Continent company is spending about 11/4 per cent. on engineering salaries. A large California company is spending about l1/2 per cent. The largest figure that has come to my attention is that of an important Rocky Mountain and Mid-Continent company that is spending a little more than 6 per cent., but that is apparently an extreme case. With the continued development of low-grade porphyry copper deposits by open pit mining, substantial amounts of copper-bearing strip material have been accumulated in waste dumps adjacent to the many large mines. Since the end of World War II, the production of copper from leaching these copper-bearing wastes increased from approximately 4% of the total copper production to 10% by the early 1960's. Projected increases will probably raise this figure to 20 to 30% by the early 1970's. Furthermore, a gradual recognition of the economic feasibility of leaching mined-out areas is evident and will undoubtedly contribute additional production. Waste dumps in canyons and gulches on the periphery of open pit mines, mine stopes, caved areas, and abandoned open pits often contain substantial quantities of leachable rock ranging in concentration from 0.1 to 0.4% copper. Recent developments in the leaching of copper, mainly the recognition of bacterial oxidation of sulfide minerals combined with better under- standing of the control of the salt content of the leach solutions, both by adjusting the pH and/or by hydrolysis, are resulting in a greatly expanded recovery of copper from these hitherto uneconomic mine rejects. 11.5-1. Mechanism of Leaching. Leaching processes for the extraction of metal values from mine ore or waste may be classified for convenience as either chemical leaching or bacterial leaching. Chemical leaching is considered to be the extraction of soluble salts by metathesis in acidic, basic, or neutral water solutions. The reactions involved may be evaluated by chemical thermodynamics. Bacterial leaching, although a chemical process, is dependent on biological catalysis and this is generally a much more complex process. This justifies its separate treatment in the application to leaching. Acid ferric sulfate solutions are commonly employed in the mining industry to leach valuable metals from metal sulfide ores. The leaching mechanism is a reduction-oxidation reaction in which minerals are oxidized at the expense of ferric sulfate. Such chemical leaching is profitable when

Although alumina constitutes about 15% of the earth's crust, it is expensive to separate and purify for the production of aluminum with the exception of the alumina in bauxite. The United States has a variety of nonbazurite resources that could substitute for bauxite, including high alumina clays, alunite, dawsonite in oil shale, anorthosite, and nepheline venite. Each of these resources is discussed from the standpoint of geology, geography, processing, and potential recovery. Potential byproducts include alica from clays, potash and sulfuric acid from alunite, soda ash from dawsonite, and soda ash and potash from anorthosite and nepheline syenite.

IN the last several years the coal industry has intensified its effort to solve the growing problem of cleaning and recovering fine mesh coals. On one hand these has been increasing civic pressure for cleaner streams, and on the other hand there has been increasing production of fine mesh coal, resulting directly from adoption of the modern mining methods so essential to the economy of the coal mining industry. Cleaning fine coal with the same precision possible with coarser coals is a difficult task, and for coals finer than 200 mesh it has been impractical. Furthermore, the inclusion of —200 mesh material in the final product markedly increases costs of de-watering and thermal drying, which are necessary steps if coal is to meet market requirements. Consequently these extreme fines have generally been wasted. As a result, problems have been created in many districts because there has not been enough area for adequate settling basins. Wasting of coal in the -200 mesh slimes may account for a loss in washer yield equivalent to 2.0 to 2.5 pct of the raw coal input. With rising mining costs the value of such a loss is constantly increasing and a need for a better solution to the fines problem becomes more pressing every day. From an operating viewpoint, also, continuous removal of extreme fines from the washing plant circuit permits good water clarification practice, improving significantly the overall cleaning efficiency. The obvious desirability of recovering a commercially acceptable coal from washery slimes prompted U. S. Steel Corp. to investigate the merits of the Convertol process developed in Germany." Although this process has been used commercially in Europe for some time, little if any consideration has been given to its possible adoption in the U. S. until very recently. Fundamentals of the Convertol Process: In the Convertol process, droplets of dispersed oil are brought into intimate contact with the solids suspended in the coal slurry to be treated. This contact causes oil to displace the water on the surface of the coal by preferential wetting, or phase inversion, after which the coal particles are allowed to agglomerate in a manner permitting their re- moval from the slurry by centrifugal filtration. The clay and other particles of mineral matter suspended in the slurry do not have the affinity for oil the coal particles have. Consequently the oil treatment is preferential to coal to the extent that more than 95 pct of the oil used reports with the clean coal recovered. Figs. 1 through 3 will clarify the steps involved in the process. Fig. 1 shows the suspended material in the slurry to be treated, which is a thickened product containing 40 to 45 pct solids. Oil is now injected into the slurry under vigorous agitation to produce good oil to coal contact conditions, which result in preferential oiling of the coal particles. These coal particles are then permitted to agglomerate by gentle stirring in a conditioner to form flocs, as shown in Fig. 2. At this point in the process the agglomerated oiled coal can be washed and partially dewatered on a vibrating screen, as shown in Fig. 3. Finally, the washed flocculate can be further dewatered in a high-speed screen basket centrifuge or in a solid bowl centrifuge. Commercial Application of the Convertol Process in Germany: The original Convertol process was developed by Bergwerksverband zur Verwertung von Schutzrechten der Kohlentechnik, G.m.b.H., a German research organization controlled by the Coal Operators Assn. of the Ruhr Valley. The process as reduced to commercial practice in Germany' is shown in Fig. 4. In this process a thickened slurry (40 to 45 pct solids) mixed with a predetermined percentage of oil is fed from a surge tank to the phase inversion mill. After the phase inversion step, the slurry is usually discharged directly to a highspeed screen centrifuge. From 3 to 10 pct oil is used, depending on type of oil, size consist of coal to be recovered, and operating temperature. The top size of fine coal cleaned in Germany by the Convertol process is limited by the size of the openings in the centrifuge screen basket. Any mineral matter coarser than the basket opening, which is generally 60 to 80 mesh, must remain with the oiled coal. If the coal fines have been effectively cleaned down to about 80 mesh, the cleaning performance of the process is practically unaffected by the presence of coarse coal particles. However, since recovery of coal much coarser than 80 mesh is mow economical by conventional methods, it normally becomes more costly to allow substantial percentages of this coarse coal in Convertol process feed. Where the general plant layout does not permit effective cleaning of coal sizes down to 80 mesh or lower. there is some justification for a coarser Con-

Response surface methodology is a well-known and powerful technique for determining optimum conditions in flotation systems. One disadvantage is the onerous task of the numerical calculations and curve plotting. This paper describes a system in which the investigator simply selects the range of several flotation variables after which the design of the experiment, data analysis, generation of response surface equations, and response surface plots are automatically carried out using a digital computer and a computer-driven curve plotter. Several typical response surfaces of important variables in phosphate flotation are presented as examples.
