RECENT studies have indicated that there may be considerable difference in the cleanliness of the central pipe cavity of open top ingots. It has been speculated that some of this difference arises becausk of reactions that occur during reheating in the blooming mill soaking pits. In this respect, it has been recognized that an oxide coating or flow of slaggy material in the cavity could inhibit welding during hot rolling and thus reduce the amount of sound product which may be obtained. This note is intended to summarize some observations on the structure of a split ingot top which may be useful in describing a mechanism whereby the shrinkage cavity could be oxidized during reheating. A 221/2x241/2 in., big-end-down, test ingot was secured from a routine production heat. The chemical analysis representing this ingot is as follows: 0.08 pct C, 1.04 pct Mn, 0.062 pct P, 0.315 pct S, and 0.02 pct Si. The kinetics of precipitation deoxidation is considered from a theoretical point of view. The size distribution and the total content of deoxidation products are estimated statistically as a function of time, taking into account Stokes and gradient collisions between the particles and separation at the top surface of the bath. The assumption is made that two particles coalesce into one larger particle as a result of a collision. General expressions are derived and calculations are carried out numerically for the case of silica particles in liquid iron. The analysis predicts a three-stage behavior for the removal of oxygen, an incubation stage, a stage of rapid separation, and a slow final stage where the content approaches the equilibrium value. The agreement with experimentally determined size distributions and deoxidation times is considered to be good. A quantitative estimation of such growth mechanisms as diffusion from the melt and redistribution of oxygen from small particles to large ones shows that these latter mechanisms cannot explain the experimentally observed gvowth of inclusions. This also indicates that collisions provide the important growth mechanism. OXIDE inclusions precipitate when a deoxidizer like silicon or aluminum is added to a steel bath. The inclusions grow and the large particles tend to separate from the bath. For each type of oxide the growth determines the sizes of the final inclusions as well as the total inclusion content of the steel. The mechanism of growth is controversial, however. It has been suggested that an inclusion grows principally by diffusion of atoms through the melt to the inclusion particle or principally by collisions and coalescence with other inclusions. Diffusion growth is always present to some extent but recent experiments and calculations by Torssell,' Kniippel et 'a1.,2 Sano et al. and Miya-shita4 indicate that collisions may be more important than previously realized. A detailed analysis has so far been lacking. The present paper is a quantitative, statistical analysis of the growth and separation of inclusions and is based on a collision theory. Nuclea-tion is not considered. The numerical estimates are based on the experimental conditions of Torssell's' investigation and comparisons are made with his observations. Torssell' studied the growth and separation of silica particles in liquid iron. Samples were taken from a 0.6 kg iron bath at various times after the addition of silicon. By a particle-counting technique developed by Bergh and Lindber~the size distribution of the inclu- sions was determined. The number of particles at the first sampling, 10 sec after silicon addition, was of the order of 3 x lo7 to 10' per cu cm, the largest particles having a radius of 2 to 4 pm. The volume fraction was 0.001 to 0.004; i.e., the dispersion was very dilute. During subsequent holding the largest particles increased their radius by a factor of 10 after about a minute, and the whole size distribution was displaced toward larger values. These results were obtained with allowance for precipitation of the equilibrium concentration of oxygen during solidification. The bath contained less than 0.01 pct of C. Figs. 1 and 2 show the typical appearance of the inclusions. Most particles are very closely spherical and appear to have been liquid or semiliquid in the melt. The observed number of inclusions, about 5x 10' per cu cm, is of the same order of magnitude as found by ~er~h.' This is a large value. The method used to process washery refuse for use as a building material aggregate is described. Results of studies made in investigating this process are summarized. The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with two commercial coal producers, studied the feasibility of using coal washery refuse in manufacturing lightweight aggregate for building materials. Lightweight aggregate is used in making masonry products of lower bulk density than can be produced from conventional aggregate such as sand, gravel, and crushed rock. Among the advantages of lightweight masonry are reduced deadweight loads which reduce materials cost, lower cost of construction labor, and improved thermal and sound insulation. A process for making lightweight concrete aggregate from coal-washery refuse appeared attractive because of the availability of raw material which contained sufficient fuel to carry out the processing. Vast quantities of such refuse have accumulated throughout the coal-producing areas of the U.S. Generally it is stored in unsightly piles, creating a problem of air pollution and using space that could be devoted to other purposes. Conversion of the refuse to lightweight aggregate could remedy these conditions and effectively utilize a material normally considered waste. The first part of the program was conducted in cooperation with the Truax-Traer Coal Co. to determine the feasibility of utilizing refuse from the company's coal preparation plant at Ceredo, W. Va., in manufacturing lightweight aggregate. The aggregate was to be used in making cement blocks comparable to those known in the building trades as cinder blocks. This project was completed in 1954. Based on the results of this work, the cooperator began commercial development and formed the Trulite Corp. for this purpose. A plant capable of handling 120 tpd of refuse was constructed for approximately $120,000. It began operating on June 1, 1955.' In 1959 a similar study was made, under a cooperative agreement with the Carbon Fuel Co. of Charleston, W. Va., to rrscertain the suitability of refuse from its plant for conversion to lightweight aggregate. Under this program various modifications of equipment were made, and the investigation of process variables begun in the previous project was extended. PROCESSING METHOD The formation of lightweight aggregate from coal-washery refuse js governed, in part, by the fusion characteristics of the mineral constituents of the refuse when heated above their softening temperatures. The heat required for this purpose is supplied by the combustihle matter in the refuse. Some of this combustible matter is coal with high ash content, but most of it is carbonaceous shale. Whereas the density of aggregate prepared from clay or shale depends largely on expansion, the density of aggregate made from refuse is reduced by burning out the combustible matter and, to a lesser extent, by expansion of the residue in the fuel bed. A chain-grate stoker with an updraft air system was chosen for the conversion process in preference to a downdraft sintering machine or a rotary kiln. In down-draft sintering, which operates on the overfeed burning principle, the volatile matter from the refuse would distill off without burning, resulting in inefficient combustion and interfering with proper operation of the equipment. The rotary kiln is designed primarily for processing material that lacks, or is low in, combustihle matter with the heat of reaction supplied from external sources. Washery refuse, which is relatively high in carbonaceous material, could burn at the wall of the kiln causing clinker formation with resultant decrease in throughput and increase in production cost. With an up-draft air stream on a chain or traveling-grate stoker, the volatile matter would be carried into the ignition and burning zones where the heat could be utilized more efficiently. The combustion procedure in this type of unit may be considered as consisting of four periods: 1) initial ignition of the top of the bed by furnace radiation, 2) ignition travel through the bed until the whole bed is ignited, 3) burnout of the combustible material with high air rates to fuse and expand the residue, 4) a cooling period. INTRODUCTION This paper deals with the development of the sublevel open stoping (SLOS) method in lead orebodies at the Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited, during the last ten years. Open stoping in different forms has been used at the Isa Mine for many years. Prior to the period under review, stopes were small, pillars were not always recovered, and scrapers extracted the ore. By the end of the sixties, the use of load-haul-dump units was becoming more widespread. Wagner ST5's were the mucking units for the lead cut and fill stopes. Some of the open stopes in 5 orebody above 13 level had 100 kW slushers, but the more southerly stopes were the sites for the introduction of diesel front-end loaders for extraction. In the early seventies, new methods were used in the block of six stopes in 2 and 5 orebodies between 8 level and 13 level and a trial stoping project was undertaken in 7 orebody between 11 level and 13 level to determine possible stope dimensions for the extraction of the Racecourse orebodies below 13 level. By the mid-19701s, stoping was well underway in 5, 7 and 8 orebodies between 13 level and 15 level, using the 'triplet' system, incorporating cemented hydraulic fill to allow greater pillar recovery. As the eighties were entered, development of the Racecourse orebodies below 15 level commenced, as did preparations for 1 orebody in the upper levels of the north end of the mine. In both cases, the pillar recovery method has been changed to reduce the amount of cemented fill required for pillar recovery. GEOLOGY Most of the lead orebodies at Isa Mine lie chiefly to the north of the central shaft complex. They are bedded sulphide deposits in a host rock called Urquhart Shale, which dips at roughly 650 to the west. The main minerals are galena and sphalerite, with the silver mineral, freibergite, being contained in the galena. To the hangingwall of the sequence are the Black Star orebodies (1, 2 and 5) which are relatively wide, pyritic and with low to above average grade lead. The Racecourse orebodies (6 to 16) lie to the footwall, and have a large variation in width, low to high grade lead, and gradation in the lead to zinc ratio from north to south. Stope outlines are often determined by economic or engineering considerations rather than geological. The published extraction reserves are 56 million tonnes of primary ore, containing 150 grams of silver per tonne, 6.4% lead and 6.5% zinc. Traditionally, it has been regarded as lead ore, although the dominant revenue earner varies from time to time. In the Black Star orebodies, the ore and hangingwalls are more competent and open stoping has long been used. The major Racecourse orebodies which have been open stoped are 7 and 8 orebodies. This has been where the orebodies are wider (to the south) and where hangingwall conditions allow. This latter aspect has been greatly influenced by the presence of 'silica dolomite1. This tough, relatively homogeneous, non-bedded rock is, in fact, the host rock for the copper mineralisation at Mount Isa, and provides a competent hangingwall for some of the lead stopes. While the shale's bedding and jointing has a major influence on the ground conditions, there is a major fault system which causes local problems. The principal virgin stress direction is perpendicular to the bedding, but the local stress situation is complicated because of shielding by filled stopes in the hangingwall copper orebodies and because of the interaction between orebodies being extracted to the footwall. Most development on strike is mined with a 'shanty-back’, with the back being as close to normal to the bedding as possible. This is near parallel to most jointing and the principal stress direction. Figure 1 is a plan view of 14 level north, which provides a representative horizontal section through the orebodies. A typical cross section is shown in Figure 2. The narrow, parallel footwall orebodies can be seen to differ from the wider hangingwall orebodies.

THE first to appreciate and foresee the value of applying electrical measurements to structural studies was Prof. Conrad Schlumberger, Professor of Physics at the School of Mines in Paris. One of his earliest practical undertakings in this line was carried out, in the field, at Fierville-la-Campagne, Normandy, in 1912. His book, published in 1920,1 still stands as an authoritative, fundamental treatise on the use of the electric current in geological studies, in spite of the rapid evolution of geophysics during the last seven years. A remarkable feature of this book is that, even then, it stressed the role of electricity in structural investigations and made public the first successful results obtained therewith. Stratigraphic studies have been pursued continuously by Conrad Schlumberger and his associates since 1912, the only interruption being the World War. The results attained demonstrate the wide possibilities of electrical exploration in structural work. This field of activity is, at the least, as varied and valuable as the search for ore. It is curious that until very recently it has so slightly attracted the attention of geophysicists and geologists on this continent. The purpose of this paper is to present briefly some examples of the practical application of the potential methods to geological studies. These examples are chosen from a number of problems solved in the field by our firm, in the course of its consulting practice. Certain fundamental points are briefly stated before the field operations and interpretations are described.

IT is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly some of the considerations that enter into the economics of so-called recycling, the generic designation of the relatively recently developed process by which a condensate† is separated from gas-distillate gas at high pressure and the residual gas returned to the reservoir. This subject necessarily embraces not only a discussion of factors that should be considered in projecting a recycling operation, such as estimating reserves, investment and operating costs, but also a comparison of condensate with other types of petroleum. The place of condensate in its relation to the total supply of crude oil is pointed out as well as certain logical methods of product disposal. The cost of drilling wells and lease maintenance is not pertinent to this discussion because income and revenue are in this paper confined to that retained by the plant or plant operator for supplying processing facilities for the gas. Before the development of recycling a great many gas-distillate gas fields in Louisiana and. Texas provided no income to their owners. When gas was sold from these reservoirs it was accompanied by irretrievable losses of condensate in the formation. The understanding of the function of retrograde condensation resulted in the introduction of a new commercial petroleum recovery process for these hitherto unexploited fields and now permits the conditioning of this type of wet gas field for the sale of dry gas therefrom without waste. SOME ECONOMIC FACTORS The study of a gas-distillate field for possible exploitation necessarily involves the critical appraisal of a number of elements, chief of which will be discussed here: (I) estimate of distillate in place, (2) estimate of distillate that can be brought to the surface, (3) available market, (4) costs. The considerations affecting the estimating of distillate reserves. in place are in the main subject to the same errors as are involved in determining dry gas reserves. Determinable data including acreage, sand thickness, reservoir pressure, reservoir temperature, porosity and connate water provide the basis for calculating the volume of gas in place. Ample allowance must be made for connate water, which may occupy from 20 to 35 per cent of the pore space of the sand. The factor of supercompressibility is to a considerable extent nullified by the reservoir temperature. It has been considered well advised to allow this factor to serve as a cushion. With the gas reserves calculated, it remains only to assay the distillate content of the gas. An intelligent discussion of the oil situation and its needs, whether from the standpoint of the prospector, the operator, the engineer, or the public administrative officer, must be founded upon a knowledge of the law under which oil lands are obtained. A consideration of new legislation must be prefaced by an understanding of the present law and its results. This paper undertakes to present no new remedy for the ills of the present situation, no new solution of the problems the oil business is facing. It attempts merely to summarize the present law, its provisions, its origin, its development, and its effects. The discussion does not pretend to be exhaustive from a legal standpoint. It aims to avoid legal intricacies which tend to. confuse rather than clarify. It seeks but to present the essentials of the existing situation. The title to government lands known to contain valuable deposits of petroleum may be acquired only under the terms of the placer law as embodied in Section 2329 et seq. of the Revised Statutes. As a preliminary to considering the desirability of this situation it is profitable to examine into its origin. Origin of the Law Congress has left no room for doubt as to the legal applicability of the placer law to oil lands. The Act of Feb.11, 1897(29 Stat., 526), provides: "that any person authorized to enter lands under the mining laws of the United States may enter and obtain patent to land containing petroleum or other mineral oils, and chiefly valuable therefor, under the provisions of the laws relating to placer mineral claims.' . The immediate cause for the passage of this Act was stated in a brief report in the, House of Representatives (there was no debate in the Senate) to be a decision of the Department rendered Aug. 27, 1896 (Union Oil Co., 23 L. D., 223), directing the cancellation of an oil placer entry on the ground that land containing petroleum cannot be located and entered as a placer mine. CUSHMAN,* Washington, D. C.:-I am very much interested in the subject matter of this paper. I have had occasion to speak to this question before. There has recently been so much written and said and claimed about the effect produced by the addition of small quantities of copper to steel that there is certainly an impression abroad that a new and wonderful cure-all has been discovered. Are we facing a method of alchemy by which, at the expenditure of very little trouble and only a few cents' worth of copper per ton, the well-known characteristics of steel with respect to some features are so marvelously changed as in effect to produce a new metal ? I am a great believer in the future of the iron and steel alloy field. I do not think that with all the advances we have made in metallurgy we have begun to scratch the possibilities of usefulness to mankind in the exploration of the alloy field, and I include in that alloy field even what might be designated as the dilute alloy field; that is to say, where a very small quantity of a metal alloyed with iron and steel confers upon it some new or extraordinary qualities. With respect to many of the physical characteristics of the copper-iron or copper-steel alloys I am not particularly competent to speak. With respect, however, to the investigation of corrosion problems and with respect to claims made with regard to resistance to corrosion, I am competent to speak insofar as I have specialized to some extent in that field and have given up a great deal of my time for a great many years to a study of it. Some years ago, being particularly interested in the study of corrosion problems, I received the very generous permission of a large manufacturing concern to use their large open-hearth furnaces any way I saw fit for exploring this particular field. There is not a metallurgist in this room who will not realize the generosity of a manufacturing company who would permit a man to pursue a theory and give him as his material to work with 60 tons of molten metal. During recent years considerable interest has been focused on the energy-absorption characteristics of metal when it is cyclically stressed in vibration. The most familiar manifestation of this phenomenon, which is called the "damping capacity" or "internal friction" 06 a material, is involved in the dissipation of mechanical energy of vibration, which otherwise would build up to stress levels where the problems of noise and fatigue are involved. In addition to its engineering importance in structures, the damping behavior of metals, particularly at low stress amplitudes, has also been used as a unique metallurgical research tool with which to provide sensitive means for indicating certain structural changes within metals. Important contributions toward understanding the energy-dissipating -mecha-nisms that are responsible for internal friction in metals have been made in the last few years. The information is not yet sufficiently extensive, however, to provide a useful metallurgical concept describing exactly how the structure affects the internal friction, or to encourage more general use of this technique among metallurgists. Three fundamental mechanisms have been proposed, as a result of recent experi- mental investigations, to account for the internal friction in nonferrous metals in low-stress amplitude tests. These include damping due to internal thermal currents that are created and flow in metal because of differential vibratory stress effects,' damping due to localized inelastic stress relaxation at inhomogeneities within the meta1,2,3 and damping related to plastic flow of a localized type for which an explanation has been sought in terms of the dislocation theory.' How each of these mechanisms functions as a result of structural changes in the metal is, in general, not well understood because of insufficient experimental data for which the controlling variables ham been segregated and because of uncertainties in regard to the nature of the structural changes themselves. In several investigations the effects of cold-working on the internal friction of polycrystalline brass and aluminum have been described. As reported by Köster and Rosenthal,5 and by Förster and Breitfield,6 there is an initial large increase in the damping when the metal is worked. The initial high value is not stable, but declines rapidly, at first, in a hyperbolic manner. About Ioo hr. after straining, a stable value is reached of magnitude proportional to the amount of strain.' In Fig. I is shown the relationship found by Zener and his collaborators between the internal friction due to cold-working of alpha brass and the amount of cold-working.8 Several investigators have made internal-friction measurements on worked poly-

This Mexican amalgamation-process, invented in 1557, at Pachuca, by Bartolome de Medina, has been widely discussed in America and Europe, but thus far there is no universal agreement as to all the chemical reactions involved. Having been, after many trials, the first to succeed in effecting the amalgamation of silver-ores by the same mechanical means, but doing without one of the chemical substances which had been considered indispensable in the practice of 300 Sears, I am led to offer these notes as a contribution to the discovery of an exact theory concerning the patio process. My treatment for silver- and gold-ores being protected by letters-patent in this country, the United States, France, Peru, Bolivia and Chile, I may speak freely concerning its materials and manipulation. I. Patio-Amalgamation. The ore extracted from the mine is sorted by pepenadores, who break the large pieces with hammers, rejecting those which contain no ore, set aside the very rich to be smelted, and deliver the rest to be crushed and pulverized for direct amalgamation in the patio. The broken lumps, of about fist-size, are first ground in Chilean mills, and then reduced, in arrastras or tahonas, to fine slime. After the lama or slime has acquired a suitable consistency by the evaporation, through the sun's heat, of a part of the water which it contained, it is spread upon the patio or amalgamating-floor, where it is mixed with 5 or 6 per cent. of common salt. A barrier pillar in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania is a portion of the bed that is left unmined along the property line or lines of adjoining mining properties, or between mines, or between parts of mines. Barrier pillars perform important functions in anthracite-mining operations. Their principal function is to act as dams to prevent water that accumulates in a mine from suddenly breaking into an adjacent mine or into adjacent mine workings and causing loss of life, property, or both. More than 83 billion gal of water is impounded in II; underground water pools in anthracite mines.1,2 These pools are confined by a system of barrier pillars which separate adjacent mines. The principal factor that threatens to cut short the life of the anthracite industry, to curtail production, and to affect the economic structure of the people and business dependent on anthracite for their livelihood is the inundation of anthracite mines.l,2,4,13,29 To obtain a clear picture of the anthracite mine-water problem, it is necessary to understand the part played by the barrier pillars that separate adjoining mines. Purpose of Report The purpose of this report is to show the methods of determining the size of barrier pillars in the anthracite region, to present the hazards that exist because of the lack of sound engineering being applied to the size of many existent barrier pillars, and to suggest a method whereby barrier pillars can perform the function for which they are intended. The Barrier-pillar Problem Article 111, section '10, of the Anthracite Mining Laws of Pennsylvania reads thus: It shall be obligatory on the owners of adjoining coal properties to leave, or cause to be left, a pillar of coal in each seam or vein of coal worked by them, along the line of adjoining property, of such width that, taken in connection with the pillar to be left by the adjoining property owner, will be a sufficient barrier for the safety of the employees of either mine in case the other should be abandoned and allowed to fill with water; such width of pillar to be determined by the engineers of the adjoining property owners together with the inspector of the district in which the mine is situated, and the surveys of the face of the workings along such pillar shall be made in duplicate and must practically agree. A copy of such duplicate surveys, certified to, must be filed with the owners of the adjoining properties and with the inspector of the district in which the mine or property is situated. Mining practices with regard to barrier pillars have varied greatly since mining began. In many anthracite mines the barrier pillars have been weakened or punctured. As a consequence, the condition

THE diffusion of metal atoms into the crystal lattice of another metal and the assumption of regular positions to form a homogeneous alloy are some of the most fundamental phenomena of structural. metallurgy. The mechanism of this process has been the subject of a great deal of study from many viewpoints, but the picture is still far from complete. It is generally believed that if one metal is to diffuse into another, the first must have some solubility in the second1. This means that the solvent must be able to accommodate the stranger atoms, either on points of its own lattice or in the interstices between, without losing its own crystallographic identity. It is also a general observation that cold-working is a distinct aid in the diffusion process, causing it to take place with greater rapidity at the same temperature or with the same speed at a lower temperature. There is considerable doubt, however, as to the real significance of the deformation in its effect on the diffusion mechanism. Several factors associated with the cold-working. may be responsible for the increased diffusion rate. The plastic deformation causes a distortion of the solvent lattice, which may be an aid in the assimulation of atoms of another kind. There are many references2 in the literature that suggest that some distortion or "loosening" of the lattice is necessary for atomic migration and that diffusion cannot take place in the undis-

The property of the Melones Consolidated Mining Company is situated on the Mother Lode of California, on Carson Hill, near Robinson's Ferry, and adjoins on the south the famous Morgan mine. The Mother Lode of California extends for a distance of over 100 miles in length through several counties, with a general strike of northwest and southeast. Three veins (commonly called the east vein, middle vein and west vein) comprise the " lode " in this section. The Melones property is situated upon the east and middle vein, and includes 1407 feet on the east vein and 5166 feet upon the middle vein. A shaft had been sunk on the Reserve mine, which is on the east rein, and within 230 feet of the Morgan mine. At the bottom of this shaft drifts and cross-cuts had been run and a large body of ore developed. It was deemed advisable by the Melones Mining Co., which holds this property under bond from the Melones Consolidated Mining Co., to run a tunnel and develop this body of ore at a greater depth. An option was obtained upon the South Carolina mine, which adjoins the property on the south, and is on the same east vein, upon which a tunnel had been run a distance of 1080 feet. This tunnel was cleaned out and continued to a point within forty feet of the Morgan mine. It passes directly under the Reserve shaft, 425 feet below the 200-foot level. It is not intended to make in the present paper any deduction or to formulate any theories from the results obtained by experiments. The further expenditure of considerable time and labor would be required to obtain a sufficient basis for positive assertions as to the microscopic structure of the different varieties of iron and steel, and the structural changes which take place in them. It is therefore my purpose at this time to offer simply a synopsis of the general results arrived at in a few months' work, a brief description of apparatus used, and a few hints as to the preparation and preservation of the material which it is intended to investigate. The study of the microscopic structure of iron and steel is not altogether new. Some attention has been given it in both England and Germany. But the foreign publications on the subject have thus far been confined, so far as I am aware, to two papers, one by Herr Martens, of Berlin, contributed to the Verein zur Befoerderuny des Gewerbfleisses and the other a lecture by Dr. H. C. Sorby of Sheffield. Dr. Sorby, it seems, was induced to investigate the subject as bearing on the structure of meteoric iron ; and the results he obtained are certainly very interesting. At the Boston meeting of this Institute, in February, 1883, Mr. J. C, Bayles called attention to the subject in a neat and exceedingly interesting paper, in which the work of Messrs. Martens and Sorby was summarized,* and original suggestions were added. It is at present difficult to say what will he eventually the practical value of the microscope, thus employed, in the sciences of engineering. The role which it seems most likely to play is that of' an adjunct to the testing-machine, and not (as some have supposed) a rival to the chemical laboratory. That it will be a most valuable accessory seems, to say the least, highly probable. I need hardly go at length into the details of preparing the material for examination.
