The transient response of earth formations may be tlcter.171ined by means of four electrodes mounted coli-rienrly on n sonde. Exponentially decaying current pules are applied to one pair of electrodes and the re.rrrlting voltage transient at the other pair is recorded. It is shown by theoreticol analysis and verified by laboratory experiments that this arrangement readily yields the direct resistivity of the formation and provides valrrable additional information as well. INTRODUCTION Although electrical transients have been employed with moderate success in geophysical prospecting, their application to well logging has received virtually no attention in technical literature. In the conventional direct resistivity logging methods only the zero frequency impedance of the formation under study is measured, and no information is obtained regarding its reactive characteristics. Since the use of certain transients appears to offer some advantages in this respect, experiments were performed on a laboratory scale to investigate this possibility. This investigation was limited to a study of a four-electrode array where both the receiving and transmitting electrode pairs are mounted on a logging sonde, and decaying exponential pulses are applied to the transmitting electrodes. The process of diffusion alloying of mixed powders offers attractive possibilities both commercially and experimentally. It avoids the fabrication difficulties arising from high alloy contents. Indeed, the process is facilitated by larger alloy additions. The direct formation of the part or test piece and the opportunlity to perform machining operations under more favorable conditions are of no small importance. However, it is necessary to make only brief mention of the interesting features. As yet there have been few attempts to study this process in detail and to carry it to completion, if such is possible. It was intended not only to measure the intermediate and optimum magnetic properties of sintered alloys but to use magnetic testing itself as a means of following the progress of alloying under various condi-tions. Having established that alloys could be successfully synthesized by this tech. nique, the opportunity was taken to study the magnetic properties of several alloys of iron and silicon which had hitherto been too difficult to prepare in suitable test piece form. While avoiding some of the difficulties inherent in the fabrication of alloys by orthodox methods, the diffusion alloying process introduces a few of its own. The first of these is the evaluation of the approach to homogenization. In recent years some notable contributions have been made to this question, but considerable uncertainty remains in its definition and evaluation. This work has concerned itself with further study of this problem and it is hoped that more light has been shed on it. The second of these difficulties arises from the presence of porosity. It is inevitable that in the consolidation of a loose bulk of powder, there should remain some voids unless extremely high pressures are repeatedly applied. It was therefore of importance to investigate their effect on magnetic properties. Recently this effect has been studied and certain predictions made of its behavior. It is believed that the experimental results presented here provide a sound substantiation of the theoretical treatment. The attempt has been made to synthesize five alloys of the iron-silicon system and three each of the iron-nickel and iron-cobalt systems. A series of experiments was also conducted on some of these alloys to test their susceptibility to heat treatment. Some unfortunate experiences have provided opportunity to report data on the deleterious effects of nitrogen on magnetic properties when present as a a in protective atmospheres. W. G. MITCHELL,* New York, N. Y.-I quite agree with Mr. Wilson1 in the statement that the Bonanza copper orebodies of the Jerome District are definitely pre-Cambrian. You might go much further than that. It is an interesting fact and, I think, well substantiated that the chalcocite enrichment is pre-Cambrian, and in that particular the deposits are unique, so far as I know, among copper-ore deposits. It is certainly true, under my scheme of classification, at least, and I think it has been supported by the work of Mr. Reber of the United Verde Extension, that chalcocitization was entirely accomplished prior to the laying down of the Cambrian sediments. The statement of Mr. Wilson that no Yavapai schist, as defined by Jagger and Palache, has been found in the Jerome District and that the schist in Jerome is composed entirely of ancient intrusive and extrusive volcanic rocks and bedded tuffs is one with which I am not entirely in accord. I believe that it is true that the schists at Jerome are largely composed of bedded volcanic material, I am also certain that there is a considerable proportion of plastic material in those schists. I have seen a good many slides, and it is quite common to find quartzites and limestones in the schists. At a short distance from Jerome, at the Arizona Binghamton, there are limestone strata in the schists several feet in thickness, and unmistakably a part of the original sediments as laid down. Another statement of Mr. Wilson is supported by my own observations. In the United Verde mine included fragments of sulfide ore are found in later anthracite dikes, which cut the orebodies but do not invade the chalcocite sediments. This is not only true, but those fragments of sulfide ore that are of small size, from the size of a walnut to fragments 2 and 3 ft. in diameter, are of the original unenriched pyritic material. I have never found high-grade ore, either chalcopyrite or chalcocite, in any of those dikes.

The phenomena of liquation in steel or iron ingots of all sizes, but naturally to greatest extent in the heaviest ingots, have been noticed ever since the commencement on a large scale of the Besse mer and open-hearth manufactures; but they have been studied with care during the last few years only. The English and the Ameri cans were the first to publish the results of investigation upon phe nomena of this clam, to which they have given the name of segregation. Historical. Passing by that which has been written concerning the segregation observed in gray pig-iron, of which instances were given by Karsten, we shall confine ourselves here to that which is known of this subject with exclusive reference to ingot steel and iron. Mr. H. M. Howe, of Boston, in his Metallurgy of Steel, the most complete and well-arranged treatise upon steel, gives a resume of observations, with the results of numerous analyses, bearing upon the phenomena of segregation. According to Tchernoff (with whom we discussed this question at length in 1878, in connection with the cast-steel plates of large dimensions designed for the Italian fleet, which we showed him at Terre-Noire), Kalakoutsky called attention in 1866 to the lack of homogeneity in Bessemer ingots, especially when cast in sand. Our own attention had been called to the phenomena of liquation in 1868 by a somewhat surprising fact which appeared in almost every one of a number of steel-rail ingots coming from the works of Messrs. Pierre and Emile Martin at Sireuil, to be rolled at TerreNoire. It is my purpose in the following paper to describe the south-central part of Siberia, with special reference to its geology and the mineral deposits. This region is known politically as the Achinsk and Marinsk districts of the Tomsk Government. It is situated among the Altai mountains, in. ]at. 50° to 55O n and long. 87O to 93O E., not far from the northern frontier of Mongolia, and is divided as follows: Mining Districts.—(1) The Tomsk mining district, including the political districts of Altai (belonging to the private crown lands of the Russian Emperor) and Marinsk; (2) the AchinskMinusinsk mining district, including the political districts of Achinsk and Minusinsk; and (3) the North Yenisei mining district, situated in the northern part of the Yenisei political district of the Yenisei Government. Fig. 1 is a map of the Tomsk mining provinces, showing the useful mineral-deposits, excepting those of gold, and giving the routes of the railroads and post-roads connecting the various districts. Political Divisions.—The Tomsk Government is sub-divided into seven " oojesdy " or districts, as follows: Barnaul; Biisk; Kuznetsk; Kainsk; Kolyvan; Marinsk; Narim; and the Altai district (private land, as above). The Yenisei Government is sub-divided into five "oojesdy" or districts, as follows : Erasnojarsk ; Kansk; Yenisei; Achinsk; Minusinsk. Concerning the geology of the region, in addition to the record of my own observations, references will be made to the works of earlier writers. These have been consulted for the purpose of comparison, as regards the districts which I have actually traversed, and for the purpose of completing my account of such portions as I have not been able to visit.

THE curriculum presented here is an outgrowth of discussions by the Committee on Geophysics Courses of the A.I.M.E. in previous years. It had to be a compromise between the desires voiced by employers of geophysicists, professional geophysicists and the possibilities at an average college. There one has to face the questions of the available teaching staff, the inertia of administrators and teachers set in their ways, and the red tape involved in modernizing antiquated curricula. It is, of course, not ideal to have colleges and universities lag 10 years behind the times. Rather, instead of being prodded by industry, -they should be ahead of industrial needs. There should also be a certain amount of leeway for the student in any college curriculum. All these points had to be considered in drawing up a curriculum, which, instead of being narrowly termed "geology" or "geophysics" was rather called "earth science." It gives the student a chance to specialize in one of the various branches represented by teachers on the faculty of The Pennsylvania State College, giving as options Geology (with subdivisions of Mineralogy and Paleontology), Geophysics, Geography, and Meteorology. Table IA. represents the option of geophysics in the curriculum that envisages that a student may want to make his career in any of the fields encompassed by the American Geophysical Union or in geoexploration. This is, of course, only the start of an education that in most cases will have to be followed by graduate work for complete professional training. The outlined curriculum is definitely of an engineering type and is identical for all of the four options mentioned for the first two years. Specialization will start in the junior year but even thereafter the branches are kept as closely allied as feasible in order to permit a student to change from one to the other (e.g., because of a different aspect in the employment situation) with a minimum of additional work. Table IB shows the geophysics option according to subject matter, indicating the considerable amount of work in the fundamentals of mathematics, physics and chemistry with a liberal number of geology courses, and some engineering. The courses in the field of geophysics are limited-just two lecture courses as a general introduction and one field course, to permit the student a visualization of the correlation between mathematically analyzed physical data and the geological realities. Thesis work is considered essential to teach the student, while he is still in college, some things S. F. Kelly has mentioned as desirable: (I) following of instructions for somewhat independent work; (2) organizing of material, and (3) producing a readable report. This, together with the personal contact with the advising faculty member, will help in forming a student's personality. The seminar course attempts to get the student into the habit of reading current literature, so that he can keep abreast of the times.

Solidification experiments were conducted with the objective of testing the theory of eutectic colony formation. Appropriate control of variables in tests on a series of high-purity aluminum-copper specimens of eutectic composition resulted in the observation of three types of eutectic microstructures, these being a unique structure consisting of lamellae essentially parallel to one another, a banded structure, and the colony structure. Lamellar faults, which are morphologically similar in many respects to edge dislocation models in crystals, produced a complex substructure in these specimens. SOLUTE rejection at the advancing solid-liquid interface of a unidirectionally solidified single-phase metal can cause the liquid immediately in front of the interface to become constitutionally super-cooled below the equilibrium liquidus temperature. Constitutional super-cooling occurs if the solidification rate, R, is too rapid, or if the thermal gradient in the liquid at the interface, G, is too low. 1 This constitutionally supercooled layer in turn stabilizes a cellular rather than a planar interface.&apos; A similar cellular interface has been observed when lamellar and other types of eutectics were unidirectionally solidified, and it has been shown that the cellular interface led to the formation of eutectic colonies.&apos; The lamellar structure is fan-shaped at the edges of colonies (which correspond to valleys or grooves in the cellular interface) because the lamellae grow normal to the local interface. One of the possible mechanisms which might cause the formation of the cellular interface, in the case of solidifying eutectic alloys, is constitutional supercooling of the liquid with respect to a third component rejected by both phases of the eutectic.3,4 On the basis of the analogy between the solidification of single-phase metals and binary eutectics, a eutectic alloy should solidify with a planar interface if the ratio of G/R is sufficiently high to compensate for any impurity which might be present and causing constitutional supercooling. The fan-like microstruc-ture of eutectic colonies should not occur under these conditions and the lamellae should be parallel to one another and to the solidification direction for extended distances. The experiments conducted in this investigation were designed to test these ideas. Following a resume of the experimental procedure, the various microstructures observed during the study are described, and their relationship to the growth conditions which produced them is discussed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The eutectic between an aluminum solid solution and 0 phase (approximate composition CuA12) was chosen for this work for the following reasons: it was known that a lamellar structure forms, the eutectic temperature is low enough to facilitate experimental work, and the components can be procured commercially in a very pure form. High-purity copper (est. 99.999 pct Cu, obtained from National Research Corp.) and spectrographic aluminum rods, having impurities other than copper estimated to be Zn-15 ppm, Mg-10 ppm, Fe-3 ppm, Na-2 ppm, Cd-1 ppm, and Mn < 1 ppm, were melted in a stabilized zirconia crucible in a vacuum induction furnace at a pressure of 10 pof Hg. The melt was superheated to about 1000°C to assure mixing, cooled to 780°C and cast into an investment mold which yielded sixteen cylindrical specimen blanks 1/2 in. in diam and 5 1/2 in. long. The casting was allowed to solidify under vacuum. This master heat had an analysis of 32.6 wt pct Cu and 67.4 wt pct A1 by difference. The need for close control of the phosphorus content of steels has led to numerous investigations on the equilibria of the dephosphorization reactions. Winkler and chipman1 have established the general conditions for effective dephosphorization of steel. They are high slag basicity, high oxygen potential, and low temperature. Other investigators have made additional contributions to the understanding of the dephosphorization process. The current status of the understanding of the dephosphorization of steel is concisely presented by Bodsworth2 and by Ward. The investigation reported in this communication was undertaken with the purpose of establishing the effect of additions of barium oxide and calcium fluoride on the dephosphorizing capacity of slags. Esin and Gel&apos;d4 proposed that barium oxide, being more basic than calcium oxide, should cause an increase in dephosphorizing capacity when added to steelmaking slags, or when used as a substitute for calcium oxide. Derge5 has also proposed that in the future conventional slags might be replaced by BaO-Al2O3 slags. There is, however, no experimental evidence confirming the effect of barium oxide on the dephosphorizing capacity of slags. The effect of calcium fluoride on the dephosphorization of steel is not clearly understood. It is generally recognized that additions of calcium fluoride are beneficial. It is not clear, however, whether calcium fluoride affects the equilibrium of the dephosphorization reaction, or whether it simply causes an increase in the fluidity of the slag and, consequently, faster approach to equilibrium. The experimental procedure consisted in equilibrating synthetic molten slags with liquid copper at 1550°C under a gas stream containing argon, hydrogen, and water vapor. In all experiments the argon to hydrogen ratio was approximately 4:1, and the hydrogen to water ratio was 5.42:l. Molybdenum crucibles were used as containers for the slag and metal. Under the above-described conditions of temperature and composition of atmosphere, there was no observable attack of the crucibles by the metal, slag, or atmosphere. Copper was used instead of iron, because iron attacks molybdenum. The equilibration was made in a tubular furnace consisting of a recrystallized alumina tube. The alumina tube was heated by electrical resistance. A Pt-40 pct Rh wire winding was used for most runs. A silicon carbide tubular resistor was also used for some runs. Temperatures were measured with a Pt-Pt-Rh (10 pct Rh) thermocouple and kept constant within ±5°C. Equilibrium was approached from both sides, i.e., by adding the phosphorus either as oxide in the slag or as a phosphorus-rich alloy of phosphorus and copper. The holding time at the equilibrium temperature was 6 hr. At the end of each run the crucibles were rapidly cooled and removed from the furnace. The slag and metal were separated and analyzed. The experimental results are shown in Table I. The phosphorus content of the slag is expressed both as percent phosphorus pentoxide and as percent phosphorus. The basicity ratio is computed by dividing the number of moles of basic oxides-oxides of barium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium—by the number of moles of acidic oxides- oxides of aluminum, phosphorus, and silicon. Calcium fluoride is not included in the computation of the basicity ratio; i.e., calcium fluoride is assumed to be neither basic nor acidic. The distribution ratio of phosphorus—percentage of phosphorus in the slag divided by the percentage of phosphorus in the metal- is plotted in Fig. 1 against the basicity ratio. The results indicate that slags containing barium oxide have greater dephosphorizing capacity than slags containing calcium oxide. The high dephosphorizing capacity of slags containing sodium oxide and the low dephosphorizing capacity of magnesia-containing slags which already have been reported in the literature2 are confirmed by the results of this investigation. It appears that calcium fluoride has a beneficial effect on the distribution of phosphorus between slag and metal in acid slags only. Although the obtained distribution ratios between the phosphorus contents of slag and copper are not directly applicable to the dephosphorization of steel, they are sufficient for evaluating the effect of slag additions on the dephosphorizing capacity of slags in general. It is well known that many properties of a given metal vary with the size of grain or cell. For most industrial purposes, where high ultimate strength and high elastic limit are desired, the manufacturer tries to produce a fine-grained structure. For some purposes, for example in transformer iron, a coarse-grained structure is desirable. The terms fine-grained and coarse-grained are used only in a relative sense. For example, a fine-grained cast copper might have grains 100 times larger than coarse-grained high-speed steel. Similarly, a finegrained steel rail might have grains or cells 100 times larger than coarsegrained wire, which was made of steel from the same heat. In some metals, the change in grain size is more appreciable khan the changes in any of the properties determined by the tensile test. Furthermore, in metals which have been annealed or subjected to high temperatures, grain size may prove to be a better indication of the life of the metal in use than the tensile test. One of the authors was able to supplant the tensile test with grain-size determinations in the control of metal for a specific use, the latter determination being more indicative of the life of the metal part than the tensile test. A grain-size determination with a tensile stest is, of course, more valuable than either singly. At present there is a decided dearth of data on actual grain-size determinations in metals, and consequently a corresponding lack of ability to interpret the determinations after they are made. It would be desirable to have correlation made between grain size and properties of metals, comparing thousands of determinations. In this way, grain-size determinations might be interpreted in much the same manner that tensile tests are now. Several Methods of Measuring Grain Size One of the chief reasons why more grain-size measurements have not been made is the excessive work involved in making a determination.

The search for oil has required, and without a doubt supplies, a tremendous amount of information on the structure, composition, physical properties, and history of sedimentary rocks. The earliest and most complete source of knowledge is the sample or core of the rock itself, the uses of which are well known. The purpose of this paper is primarily to discuss a new method for obtaining these cores, and to illustrate its use in connection with electrical logs. Most cores have been obtained through a special adaptation of rotary drilling, and the results have been remarkably good, considering the mechanical problems involved. Unfortunately, because of the time and expense, this method cannot be used for the entire length of the drill hole. Even though ingenious contrivances have been evolved in order to reduce the time spent in round trips, such as wire-line coring equipment, mechanical coring still remains too expensive to be carried out continuously. In practice, therefore, one is finally compelled to estimate the probable depths of the more interesting horizons and, allowing a wide margin of safety, to core through those sections only. It is true also that interesting results have been obtained by examining the cuttings brought to the surface by the mud circulated in the well during the process of drilling. Be that as it may, the inescapable fact remains that key horizons may be passed inadvertently, for one reason or another, while the drilling operations are being performed. The only continuous record of the formations encountered is that furnished by electrical surveys. Obviously, it would be desirable to make the electrical survey first and to take the samples from the wall of the hole according to the indications on the electrical log. In this way, it would be possible to core only the exact sections desired, eliminating the otherwise inevitable estimates as to the point at which to start coring, and thereby reducing to a minimum this expensive operation. At the same time this method would provide a maximum of useful samples. A device for taking samples of the formation from the walls of a hole therefore offers the possibility of recovering cores from zones otherwise lost as a source of this type of information. The function of a preposition is to show the relation of one thing to another; it is necessary therefore for the writer to select the preposition that indicates the particular relation, otherwise he will fail to express himself clearly. Is it against common sense&apos; to suggest that a Government is justified, morally as well as constitutionally, in preventing the decay of an industry by insisting upon the amalgamation of the prosperous with the needy? All these seven prepositions are used correctly. With the first dredge introduced in Russia, of Werf Conrad, Haarlem, make, this method of alluvial dining became important. Here the prepositions "with", "in", and "of" are used wrongly. He means: "This method of a1lu;ial mining sprang into importance shortly after the first dredge, made at the Werf Conrad, Haarlem, was introduced into ;Russia." The statement itself ii not true, but for that I am not responsible. Once, while I was serving with him, we were frozen in out of sight of land in the Gulf of Pichili in the North of China. Admiral Fisher wrote thus. He has used nine prepositions in making this brief statement. The sequence of three prepositions "in out of" is particularly awkward.

The earlier struggles in petroleum geology were directed to solving the Qrigin and method of accumulation of petroleum. We are now fairly well agreed on those subjects. Most of us think that the great mass of petroleum commercially produced comes from plants or animals, or possibly from both. We are confident that the oil was not produced where it is now found but has accumulated in reservoirs of various kinds. The types of reservoirs are certainly variable but they just .as certainly follow definite geologic laws. Some of these types of reservoirs can be determined from surface study; others cannot. We know, too, that these types of reservoirs (largely structures such as anticlines, domes, and terraces) are much more widespread than the oil pools. In other words, there are many places where good sands and good structures exist but where oil is not found. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to attempt to analyze, from a regional standpoint, some of the conditions that control the presence or absence of oil pools and to group them in a regional way, hence the term "Petroliferous Provinces." The paper lays no claim to presenting new facts but attempts to group and classify the information that so many have expressed again and again. The essential factors for an oil field are petroleum, a reservoir material, and conditions under which the petroleum can enter the reservoir but cannot escape except through the drill holes. The paper will first discuss the source of petroleum as it occurs in definite regions, then the regional arrangement of reservoir strata, and finally the areal arrangement of structures. To have petroleum, there must be a source. Since living matter is considered the source of the petroleum, geological conditions must have been such that living organisms were abundant. Arid regions on the earth&apos;s surface have not given rise to living things in sufficient abundance to produce oil; similarly, too cold regions and saline inland lakes. Austenite grain size has long been recognized by metallurgists as an important property of steels because of its influence on toughness, hardenability, ma-chinability and creep strength. Much research has been carried out on wrought steels to develop methods for disclosing austenite grain size, and to, provide knowledge of the grain-size characteristics of steels produced and heat-treated in various ways. Much less work in these fields has been done on steel castings; partly because, owing to the variable and complex microstruc-tures of cast steels, it is frequently very difficult to obtain results that are not questionable. The object of this investigation, therefore, was to establish, for a wide variety of carbon and alloy cast steels, suitable methods for disclosing austenite grain size and some knowledge of the grain-size variations to be expected. The steel foundryman is interested in austenite grain size at two different stages in the manufacture of his products; one is just after the steel is cast, and the other is after any reheating operation carried out above the critical temperature range. In both, it must always be kept in mind that the grain size being sought is actually a previous austenite grain size, and that the austenite no longer exists once the steel has cooled to room temperature. The prob-lem of the investigator is always to use evidence obtained from the structure at room temperature to deduce this previous austenite grain size, which was established the last time the steel existed at a temperature above the critical range. Since most steel castings today are at least annealed or normalized, the measurement of austenite grain size established by heat-treatment will he considered first. More than 50 commercially produced cast steels rcpresenting a wide variety of compositions and melting practices were used in the study. For each steel, grain-size determinations were made after each of three widely varying heat-treating schedules namely, one hour at I550&apos;F, one hour at I700°F, and six hours at 1700 F. The list of steels and results obtained on them will be found in the appendix. (See page 530.) A discussion of the knowledge gained on the applicability of various test methods and on grain-size characteristics of cast steels in general follows. This paper briefly describes the general outline of cyaniding silver-ores in Mexico, with special reference to personal experiments made in the Temascaltepec district. The most important papers on the subject deal with cyaniding gold-silver ores, the gold predominating in value, so that the treatment is nearly the same as for gold-ores, the losses of silver being considered of little importance. I describe here the treatment of silver-gold ores containing very little gold, which is more general in Mexico than elsewhere. The cyanide treatment, which was so successfully applied to gold-ores, did not succeed immediately with silver-ores on account of their varying composition. Gold occurs in nature usually in the native state, while silver occurs generally in combination with sulphur (argentite), and various combinations of sulphur, antimony, and arsenic. In former times there mas a complete difference in the treatment of gold-ores and silver-ores. Amalgamation, which was successful with gold-ores, was generally inadequate with silver-ores. The usual treatment in Mexico for silver was the patio process, the theory of which was satisfactorily explained only quite recently by Mr. Ortega and others. General Outline of the Cyanide Treatment. The general tendency of the present practice is to slime the silver-ore as much as possible, and in order to obtain a higher efficiency, with less loss of cyanide, and greater speed, the following lines are observed: 1. Crushing by stamps with 30- or 40-mesh screens, then crushing by Huntington or Chilean mills, through 60- or 80-mesh screens. 2. Concentration upon vanners.

For several years International Minerals & Chem-ical Corp. has used a radiation method to assay potassium content of products from potash and feldspar beneficiation. The procedure is rapid, accurate, and inexpensive and is easily handled, if necessary, by nontechnical personnel. Data are presented to show the accuracies that may be expected if the technique is used for control of pilot plants or large-scale plants. Natural potassium is composed of three isotopes —K, K and K. Five other isotopes, artificially produced, have been detected. In natural potassium only the K isotope, with a half life of 1.4x10 years, is radioactive. Its modes of decay are beta and gamma rays, positrons, and x-rays. Only the more abundant beta rays, however, are important in radiation measurements using geiger tubes. Barnes and Salley&apos; measured radiation of potassium salts in solution in 1943. Gaudin and Parnell2 first reported the use of solid salts arranged in a vessel surrounding the ß counter in 1948. Later, Scheel used the method to assay potassium content of various crude and finished potash salts. Experimental: Dip-type Geiger-Muller tubes (TGC-5) supplied by Tracerlab Co. were used in all radiation counting measurements. The tube was encompassed by a glass container about M in. larger in diameter than the tube. This container, which served as a sample holder, was closed at the bottom with a rubber stopper to facilitate removing the samples. Samples were not weighed, but about 40 g of sample were needed for each test. Electrical impulses from the tube were counted on either a Tracerlab scaler or a rate meter. To obviate the need for constant attendance, preset features were incorporated into the scalers, so that at a predetermined time or count the units were automatically deactivated. When rate meters were used, counting rates were read directly from instrument or from a recorder used in conjunction with the rate meter. Each tube was calibrated, according to the manufacturer&apos;s instructions, to determine the correct operating voltage to insure reproducible results. A linear calibration plot of percent K2O vs counting rate was also obtained for each tube by recording the counting rate plus background count of several standards of different K2O content chemically analyzed by the chloroplatinate method.&apos; These standards were of approximately the same particle size distribution as samples to be assayed. Specific background count caused by cosmic rays and other surrounding radiation was checked periodically by counting a sample of pure NaCl. Fig. 1 is a representative calibration plot. Assays were determined directly from the standard plot or calculated by subtracting the background count from the counting rate, then multiplying by the slope of the line. Chemical assays of the test samples were made by the Sherril method," a flame photometric technique, or the chloroplatinate method. Data: The radiation assay method has been used for three years by International Minerals & Chemical Corp. in the laboratory and in pilot plants processing ores containing potassium. These dry concentration plants process sylvinite and langbeinite ores at Carlsbad, N. M., and feldspar ores at Top-sham, Maine. Sylvinite ore is predominantly a mixture of syl-vite (impure KCl) and halite (impure NaCl). Contaminants include sulfates, such as langbeinite (2MgSO - K2SO4), kieserite (MgSO H2O), poly-halite (MgSO4.K2SO, 2CaSO, . 2H2O), and slimes. Langbeinite ore is predominantly langbeinite and halite with small amounts of sylvite, sulfates other than langbeinite, and slimes. Several variables, in addition to correct calibration and standardization of tubes, were found to be important in obtaining reproducible results. During 1939, Indiana experienced a grcat increase in prospecting and drilling for oil and gas. Major activity, as during the preceding year, was in the southwestern part of the state, the Indiana portion of the Eastern Interior Coal Basin. An increasing interest was evident during the year, however, in the entire state, chiefly in northern Indiana (on the south flanks of the Michigan Basin) and in the old Trenton field of east central Indiana. In the latter area several tests to deeper horizons in the Trenton and to the underlying St. Peter sandstone were completed. Results in this area have been discouraging, however, since these deeper horizons are very erratic. The regional structure in the Indiana portion of the Michigan Basin is generally favorable to oil accumulation, but the picture is complicated by a uniform mantle of glacial drift and a lack of subsurface information. Several wells were started during the last half of 1939 to test the Devonian and Trenton formations in this area. Production from these formations was found at several localities many years ago, hut, no sustained effort has been made to locate pools in this area, which covers perhaps 20 counties. There were 377 wells completed in Indiana during 1939, and 77 others were in various stages of drilling at the close of the year. Of the 377 completed, 255 were classed as field locations and 122 as wildcats. The field wells were divided as follows: 156 oil wells, 39 gas wells, and 60 dry holes; the wildcats: 98 dry holes, 19 oil wells and 5 gas wells (wildcat oil and gas wells include deeper production in oil fields and field extensions as well as new field discoveries). During the year 218 more wells were completed than during 1938. Outstanding developments for 1939 include the discovery of several new oil and gas fields. In the Griffin field, which was discovered during the closing days of the previous year, 103 wells were drilled, including field extensions. Of these, 97 were productive oil wells. This field now covers more than 2000 acres of productive area and has not as yet been defined. There are five producing horizons in the field, including the Waltersburg, Tar Springs, Elwren, and Aux Vases sandstones of Chester age and the McClosky horizon of the Ste. Genevieve limestone.
