DURING the 30-year period spanned by these annual Howe Memorial presentations, many lecturers could proudly claim a kinship either as a student or an associate of the man whose memory we honor. Although it has been my good fortune to have attended many of these annual lectures, it was not my privilege to have known Henry Marion Howe personally. However, his great repute as teacher and scientist was known to all undergraduates of my day and the later years have enhanced my appreciation of his wisdom and foresight. Those who knew him well have said he derived particular pleasure from speculations on the future world of metallurgy. For this reason, I feel that perhaps he would not be unsympathetic to a lecture in his honor which departs from the highly instructive scientific presentations made in the past by so many able Howe Memorial lecturers, and which is concerned more with the practical phases of various steelmak-ing processes and some speculations on their future form and relative importance. The word "revolutionary" is frequently applied to each seemingly important improvement in the production of steel ingots, but in retrospect these changes, impressive as they appear at the time, are merely steps of progress. In the hundred years from the inception of tonnage steelmaking, only three processes can be truly classified as revolutionary. They are the pneumatic process, known in this country as the bessemer process; the reverberatory method called the open hearth process; and, the electric furnace process. There have been many variations and combinations of the three fundamental methods, but they remain truly the only revolutionary methods in steelmaking since its early history. Everything else has been evolutionary, in effect. doing the same things that we have done in the past but doing them better, correcting our errors through experience, and slowly but inevitably reaching a higher state of accomplishment. It has often been said that coming events cast their shadows before, and the production of steel ingots is no exception. As a result of the unrelenting demands of World War I1 and the years that followed, truly impressive progress has been made in steel ingot production. The incessant pressure for immediate results during this period required the employment of initiative and daring, as in few past decades, and many developments were brought to fruition. Of equal importance is the possible effect on future steelmaking methods of the many ideas initiated but still in formative stages. Fig. 1 portrays ingot production in the United States by the three fundamental processes over a period of 75 years and is interesting because it poses some questions as to future trends. The early ascendancy of the bessemer, its replacement in importance by the open hearth process, the amazing growth of the latter, and the recent challenge of the electric furnace are evident from the chart. Management is fully aware of these changes, but is even more interested in the future trends. Our concepts of the relative importance of the more recent developments and their possible effect on future processes may perhaps be best exemplified by a specific, hypothetical problem. Let us assume management is contemplating a new ingot producing plant with an output of 100,000 net tons per month, located in an area where some purchased scrap may be obtained but where by far the largest component will be own-produced blast furnace iron. Management requires a process or combination of processes which will yield highly uniform quality characteristics in the ingot form, and represent the soundest selection in investment and operating cost. Under these conditions, the obvious selection for the past four decades has been the open hearth process but, in view of more recent developments, management may believe that it is no longer permissible to disregard other possibilities with impunity. Accordingly, to be assured of the best possible selection, they request that you review not only the possibilities of utilizing the conventional open hearth, duplex, bessemer, and electric furnace methods, but also the more recent developments, such as the turbo-hearth, the Linz-Donawitz method, the Perrin modifications, and other possibilities. With this background, one might then appraise the relative importance of these methods to meet a specific need, and concurrently speculate on the forms that future ingot processes will assume and the relative importance of these processes.

The heat-treatment of steels will not pass from the stage of an art into that of a science until the mechanism of the phase transformations associated therewith is thoroughly understood. Such an understanding will involve two distinct types of inquiry: (I) the direction of the transformation, (2) the speed of the transformation. The first type of inquiry, which involves only the equilibrium relations between the various phases in steel, is the subject of the present and of a succeeding article; the second type, which involves the kinetics of transformations, will be the subject of a later article. In order that a theory of equilibrium relations may give useful information, certain experimental data must be put into the theory. It is customary for these data to be of a thermal nature. In the system discussed herein—steel—such thermal data are very scarce. In medium-alloy steels another type of data might possibly be used. In these steels the concentration of solute is so low that it may be possible to use the approximation of dilute solutions, an approximation that leads to linear relationships. The unknown functions, or constants, may then be determined in some cases from the binary iron-alloy system and in other cases from the ternary iron-carbon-alloy system. From the functions, or constants, so determined may then be computed the equilibrium relations in more complex medium-alloy steels. In the present article this second approach is used, the necessary experimental data 'being obtained from the simple binary and ternary equilibrium diagrams. Fundamental Equations In this article are derived the equilibrium relations between the gamma, alpha and cementite phases. In these three phases all important alloying elements except carbon form substitutional solutions, each alloying atom occupying a potential site for an iron atom. Carbon, on the other hand, forms an interstitial solution. In the face-centered cubic gamma phase, the interstitial positions are at the center of the unit cube and at the centers of the cube edges. There are therefore four interstitial positions per unit cell, or one per iron atom. In the body-centered cubic alpha phase, the interstitial positions are probably at the face centers, and also at the centers of the edges, which are crystallographically equivalent to the face centers. There are therefore six interstitial positions per unit cube, or three per iron atom. In cementite, (Fe, Alloy)3C, the carbon atoms may. be regarded as filling all the lattice positions of a given type. The introduction of the fundamental the of equilibrium has presented the author with a quandary. These equations are formally so similar to other equations that have been derived1,2 for related systems that they may appear to some readers

THE external appearance of a crystal which has undergone plastic flow suggests that adjacent blocks of the crystal have glided bodily past one another along the slip planes. However, the great discrepancy between the shear stresses calculated to effect such a movement and those actually observed has for many years stimulated searches for more satisfactory interpretations of the slip process. Appreciable success in these efforts has been realized by assuming the presence in the crystal of various sorts of imperfections and by considering the consequences of the presence of these flaws when stress is externally applied, The theory that has received the most attention recently-that of dislocations-postulates the occurrence of small, mobile imperfections or dislocations which move through the crystal along the slip direction, each dislocation being attended by a local shear displacement of one interatomic distance. Thus only that portion of the crystal through which the dislocation has passed may be said to have slipped, Since each dislocation produces a displacement of only one interatomic distance, an avalanche or train of many dislocations would be necessary to account for the observed displacements of several hundred or thousand interatomic distances. The salient point of the theory of dislocations is the concept that a slip band does not suddenly appear in its entirety. On the contrary, it grows progressively across the slip plane as the individual dislocations successively appear and advance in a train through the crystal. However, the concept of growth is not intrinsic only to the theory of dislocations, since atomistic mechanisms other than that postulated by the dislocation theory can quite probably also describe the growth of a slip band. For instance, a slip band might resemble a disc-like interface that appeared and then grew continuously from a small size, producing a displacement that increased with the size of the disc, Whatever the precise mechanism, the concept of growth is in itself consistent both with -the observed low values of critical shear stress and with the experimental observation that slip bands. frequently do not traverse the entire crystal. The likelihood that slip bands grow implies that they must first be nucleated and that the initiation of slip can therefore be analyzed in terms of the general concepts of nucleation. Indeed, this suggestion was advanced1 several years ago, but the matter does not appear to have been further pursued. Recent advances in the theory of nucleations2,3,4 have encouraged such a treatment of the slip process. As will presently be demonstrated, this approach to the problem not only accounts successfully for the incubation periods that have been observed5,6 to precede slip but also predicts certain transient effects in the deformation process, The existence of these transients apparently has not hitherto

Typical System of Workings THE general system of workings at the Utah-Apex is similar to that found in many of the western metalliferous mines. There is a vertical three-compartment shaft extending to the surface, from which the various levels have been driven to the orebodies. The 1000-ft. (305-m.) level, about ¾ mile long, was driven as a haulage and drain adit. Geology The formation is a flat north-dipping series of alternating limestone and quartzite beds. Extensive north-south faulting and-fissuring have taken place, resulting in the formation of large replacement orebodies in the crushed zones in the limestone. The orebodies are irregular in shape and size, but follow closely the trend of the mineralizing fissures. The ore consists of galena, pyrite, sphalerite and small values in silver and gold. Large masses of non-commercial pyrite are frequently found in or adjacent' to the orebodies, and more or less pyrite is found for some distance in the walls of the orebodies. Lenticular bodies of a black pyritic shale also occur in the zones where extensive faulting has taken place.

GROWTH of the United States to industrial supremacy in the world is mainly because of the rapid exploitation of natural resources. The easily found high grade mineral resources have been depleted and attention has turned to low-grade ores. Progress has been made from the comparatively crude mining and milling techniques, which sufficed for the rich deposits, to more complex technology for exploiting low-grade ores. In spite of this progress the defense program is pointing up the fact that the mining industry is caught short on ability to produce the needed mineral raw materials. The mining industry is digging itself out of business here in the United States.

SINCE I promised you above when speaking of the melting of metals to teach you to make small crucibles and shells for melting, I do not wish to fail in my promise. For, in truth, since they are instruments that are much used for this procedure, they increase the work if they are not good, and often cause great extra expense as well as necessitating repetition of the work. If they are good they save everything. Therefore, if you have to make them, do it so that they, are greatly aided by art. It is first necessary to have the clay of a good nature, that is, resistant to the force of the fire by its own natural virtue, either when it is lean or when its viscousness is mixed with much talc, and whether it is yellow or white. This should be well freed from small stones and beaten well with an iron, and then thoroughly mixed by hand. With this should be mixed an eighth part of finely ground and sifted iron scale,* and also some [145] young ram's-horn ashes. These things should be well mixed together by hand and by beating them. If this clay should not be strong enough by itself, it is mixed with another lean clay, with crushed peperino, flintstone, or some other stone that in your judgment seems to be arid and resistant. Crucibles are worked on a low potter's wheel turned by hand, or on a high one turned by foot, just as plates are made. Both large and small ones are made. Most of them are given a triangular shape at the mouth, and the shells have a kind of spout for ease in pouring out the metal. This done they are well dried, and baked in furnaces like pots or other vessels. At the end, when they have been thus made they are used for melts.

THE statutory requirements of the States and the district rules are, broadly speaking, similar. There is just enough difference to make it tantalizing. DIFFERENCES IN STATE LEGISLATION GOVERNING THE LOCATION OF MINING CLAIMS Discovery Discovery is the first step in the location of the claim. The provision of the Revised Statutes (2320) is, "No location of a mining claim shall be made until the discovery of the vein or lode within the limits of the claim located." Strictly speaking, discovery may be defined as the finding of ore or metalliferous rock in place in a well-defined vein. This definition was too strict, so discovery extended later to cover such indications of the presence of ore, within rock in place, as would justify an experienced miner in spending his time and money with a reasonable expectation of finding ore in paying quantities. According to Colorado statutes a discovery must show a well-defined crevice; in Arizona, a lode, deposit, or mineral in place; in Montana, a well-defined crevice or valuable deposit; in Nevada, a lode or deposit of mineral in place. It is wrong to require a discovery. An honest prospector, wishing to obey the law, finds himself compelled, in most cases, to evade this point. In Clear Creek district, Colorado, a quartz seam will constitute a discovery; in Butte, a red capping; in Leadville or Ely, it is any place where a man can find a piece of vacant ground big enough upon which to sink a 10-ft. hole. If the vein or deposit outcrops a man can show a discovery, but if it does not outcrop it is foolish to compel him to show one; and this point has been gently side-stepped. Any hole 10 ft. deep now constitutes a discovery. It is no use having laws that the people cannot consistently obey. No sane man will dig unless he expects to find mineral, and he should be protected while digging. He should be required to show that he has mineral ground only when he comes to patent.

The solid-solubility limits of iron in beryllium were determined between 850o and 1200oC by analysis of differential type multiphase diffusion couples, using an X-ray absorption technique. The maximum value of the solubility limit was found to be 0.92 ± 0.02 at. pct (5.46 wt pet) at the eutectic temperature 1225°C. The solubilities of nickel and beryllium were determined between 900°and 1200°C by the same technique and the maximum solubility was found to be 4.93 + 0.01 at. pct (25.2 wt pet) at the eutectoid temperature, 1065°C. A previously unreported high-temperature phase which decomposes eutectoidally at 1065 °C was found to exist in the beryllium-nickel system at a composition of approximately 8 at. pct Ni (36 wt pet) by diffision-couple analysis. The presence of this phase was confirmed by thermal analysis and metallo-graphic analysis of the structure resulting from the eutectoid decomposition. G. V. Raynor1 has treated the solid solubilities of some of the elements in beryllium on the basis of the "Hume-Rothery" rules2 which have been modified to include ionic size and ionic distortion effects. It was predicted that the solubility of iron and nickel in beryllium should be slightly less than that of copper. The lowering of the solubility, according to Raynor, is due to a more unfavorable relative valency effect and an ionic size effect. Kaufmann and corzine3 have compiled data on the solubilities of elements in beryllium and have discussed them in the light of the Raynor paper. These authors feel that, because the elements having the greatest solubility in beryllium systematically fall in the Group VIII and IB Columns of the periodic table, the electronic structure greatly influences the maximum solid solubility of elements in beryllium. The solubility of iron in beryllium was determined by Teitel and cohen4 as part of the study of the beryllium-iron phase diagram. The determination was carried out by X-ray and thermal analysis and according to the phase diagram presented, the maximum solubility of iron in beryllium is 0.41 at. pct (2.5 wt pct) at 1225oC. However, it is estimated that the uncertainty in the position of the a-beryllium primary solid-solution boundary is about 0.5 at. pct (3wtpct). Losana and Goria3 in studying the beryllium-nickel phase diagram, determined the solid solubility of nickel in beryllium by thermal analysis. They found the maximum solubility to be between 1.65 and 2.65 at. pct (10 to 15 wt pct) at 1240°C. This value decreased rapidly with decreasing temperature. In determining approximate ranges of solubilities for different elements in beryllium, Kaufmann, et al,8 reported a value of between 1.3 and 1.7 at. pct (7.9 to 10.1 wt pct) for the solubility of nickel in beryllium. The value was obtained by metallographic examination of quenched alloys and lattice-parameter measurements. However, the authors also noted a single-phase structure for a 1.7 at. pct Ni alloy (10 wt pct) on cooling from the liquid. This would indicate a higher solubility range than was reported. ~isch,' in his X-ray studies of beryllium-copper, beryllium-nickel, and beryllium-iron intermetallic compounds, reports the disappearance of a second phase (Ni,Be2) in the beryllium primary solid solution at approximately 4 at. pct (20 wt pct). THEORY The analysis of concentration gradients in diffusion couples has proven to be a useful tool in determining phase equilibria.8-14 In this particular study the diffusion couples were chosen to straddle the expected composition range of the phase boundary, then heat treated at a given temperature and the concentration gradient evaluated. The composition of the phase boundary for a given temperature appears at a point of discontinuity of the composition gradient. Examples of typical phase diagrams and the concentration gradients which should be found in such systems are shown in Fig. 1. In the present work, gradients of the form of Fig. l(c) were obtained in diffusion couples made of pure beryllium and two-phase alloys of beryllium with either iron or nickel. The composition at the point where the gradient becomes discontinuous, Cs, corresponds to the solubility limit of either iron or nickel in beryllium. The analysis of the concentration gradients was carried out by an X-ra absorption method developed and applied by Ogilvie and later used by Moll13 and Hilliard.l4 It depends on the fact that the absorption of X-rays by matter is determined by the concentration and type of the various atomic species present. A new method for open-pit design has been devised by G. MATHERON and the writers: it replaces the search for an optimum contour by the determination of a parametrizing function. The isovalue curves of this function give the optimum pit design corresponding to varying economic parameters; The method is described and indications are given about the corresponding program. Simulated data have been processed by the program and by a standard program using LERCES-GROSSMAN graphical method: the comparative results are described.

WITH the depletion of our older, and relatively shallow, oilfields and the necessity for securing new production from deeper horizons, much attention is being given to the improvement of oil-well pumps in order that they may function satisfactorily under the more difficult conditions imposed by increased depth. Until recently, practically all of the world's petroleum was secured from wells less than 3000 ft. deep, whereas horizons are now being explored to depths of from 5000 to 7000 ft. in some of the more prolific fields, and it seems probable that the greater part of the future supply must come from depths in excess of 3000 ft. While much of the early production in a new field is obtained by natural-flow methods, when the stimulus of high gas pressure fails, recourse must be had to some method of pumping. The perfection of a pump capable of economically and efficiently lifting oil from depths ranging from 3000 to 7000 ft. is therefore a matter of prime importance to the oil-producing industry. This paper is offered as an estimate of the present state of development of the oil-well plunger pump and as a review of the general principles involved in its operation in deep-well pumping. A design for a new type of oil-well pump embodying several novel features, is also described.

The Puget Sound Section met at the Arctic Club, Seattle, Wash., on Jan. 20, 1917. Sixteen members and five guests were present. Dinner having been served, the meeting was called to order. A letter from secretary of Associated Engineering Societies was read, requesting payment of this section's assessment to the quarterly budget, and upon motion it was voted that the Secretary-Treasurer be instructed to pay this assessment. It was moved and carried that this section join with the Chemical Society in a meeting. At the, close of the business meeting, Mr. Asa C. Baldwin gave an illustrated lecture on the "Alaska Boundary Survey." On Feb. 24, the Puget Sound Section again held a meeting at the Arctic Club, 16 members and three guests being present. Chester F. Lee, as member of a committee representing this section in the joint council of the Associated Engineering Societies, reported that by lots it had been decided that the term of service of said committee would be as follows: Chester F. Lee, two years; George. Watkin Evans, one year. Following adjournment of the business meeting, Prof. Joseph Daniels, of the University of Washington, delivered a very interesting lecture on "Milling Practice of The Alaska-Castineau Mining Company." The cams at present universally used in stamp mills lift the tappets with an involute form of curve, to which the surface of the tappet is always tangent; moreover, the line of contact between tappet and cam, if produced, would pass through the center of the stem. This is no doubt a desirable feature, but the writer has long believed that it would be much more desirable if the cam were to pick up the stamp without shock, and gradually increase the upward velocity of the stamp throughout its upward movement. The involute form of cam attempts to impart instantly a considerable upward velocity to the stamp, starting it from a state of rest, and the result is a destructive blow, a great deal of noise, and much wear and vibration. The writer has developed a form of cam which will lift the stamp pith a motion similar to that of the piston of an engine between the end and middle of its stroke; in other words, harmonic motion, from the woint of zero to maximum velocity. The curve will give this ideal motion only when the stamp is set for the exact drop for which the cam was designed, but the improved cam will not be as bad as the involute cam until the drop is reduced one-half. In other words, if a cam is designed for a 6-in. drop, it will be some improvement over the usual form of cam until the drop is only 3 in. Any cam, whatever its form, must of course lift the stamp in the same number of degrees of revolution; therefore, with this new form, since the stamp starts more slowly on its upward course, it must end up by going faster, the average speed being the same as with the involute cam. The stamp, after it is no longer in contact with the cam, keeps on going up a certain distance, which is easily calculated. It is therefore possible to hang up a stamp without a cam stick, if the fingers are not more than + in. longer than necessary to hold the tappet above, the cam. With this design of cam the surface of the tappet is not tangent to the surface of the cam throughout the lift. An analytical study is made of thermal stress distribution in a thin circular disc subjected to a peripheral thermal shock at various rates of heat transfer. The problem is of importance in predicting the thermal shock response of a rock body of finite size. The theoretical analysis is based on radial heat flow by conduction in the disc and heat exchange by convection between the disc and the surroundings. The case of constant properties and plane stress is treated. Solutions of the stress distribution are presented for both cooling and heating shocks and an average stress theory is formulated. Preliminary experimental verification was obtained from the results of shock tests on thin rock discs insulated on both flat end faces so that heat exchange took place through the exposed peripheral surface. Physical properties vital to the analysis are Young's modulus, tensile strength, coefficient of linear thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity. Plots of these properties are presented. Historically, thermal energy has been used for primary rock removal throughout the ages. Although it is not widely known, the fire-setting method of thermal rock fragmentation was still in use 100 years ago in systematic underground mining operations in Scandinavia.' There, the availability of cheap labor and abundant wood fuel made the method competitive with the early blasting powders. By 1880, as high explosives replaced powder, use of the method declined and it was finally abandoned about 1885. Only 40 years ago, some experimental fire-setting methods were used for rock removal underground at Pribram and Zinnwald in Central Europe.2 Compressed air-oil burners replaced the earlier wood fuels. About 15 years ago, gaseous oxygen-oil burners were introduced in the United States and gained acceptance for difficult blasthole drilling and some quarry opera- tions. At present, there is renewed interest in the compressed air-oil burner designs. The literature included information on thermal secondary processes for rock weakening or particle liberation3,4,5,6,7,8 on thermal spallation of rock 9,10,11,12,13 and on the thermal fracture of materials other than rock. The 1955 Symposium on Thermal Fracture14 and the later work of Hassel-man, cover recent developments in thermal shock investigations on brittle ceramics. Although the number of published analytical and experimental investigations conducted on ceramic and refractory materials is large, the literature reveals that there is a lack of information on both the theoretical and actual response of rock to thermal shock. Many of the thermal shock studies on ceramic and refractory bodies are based on the case of heat transfer at the solid's surface by convection in either liquid or air. A similar heat transfer situation was adopted for a theoretical analysis of the thermal stresses in a thin circular disc subjected to a peripheral thermal shock. Experimental thermal shock tests were then conducted on rock specimens to check the analytical results. Specially insulated quartzite, basalt and taconite discs were shocked in either liquid or still air bath at various rates of heat transfer. The work was done in order to resolve the question as to whether theoretically determined tensile stresses are actually realized in a finite rock body undergoing thermal shock. Specifically, if theory predicts that the tensile strength of a rock should be exceeded in a particular type of controlled thermal shock, will fracture occur? This information is needed by Bureau researchers working on thermal and electrical rock fragmentation methods. The object of this paper is to present the main features of the theory and procedure being used in the authors' approach to quantitative prediction of rock response to a thermal shock. THEORETICAL ANALYSIS In the analysis to follow, simple geometry of a thin circular disc is considered. The disc is assumed to be isotropic, homogeneous and perfectly elastic, and to have constant thermal and mechanical properties. The trying times experienced by the steel industry during the past four years have emphasized the necessity of producing pig iron at the lowest possible cost. The trend in both design and operation of blast furnaces has been toward this end rather than toward securing maximum production from a unit or group of units. In the following discussion the trend in design of stacks and auxiliary equipment will be taken up before operation is considered. Although few furnaces have been constructed in the past few years, the trend is definitely toward larger furnaces with a hearth diameter of 24 or 25 ft. Such a furnace is very flexible, being able to produce efficiently any desired daily tonnage between 500 and-1000 or more. The detail of the design of furnace stacks, with the exception of the top, has changed little in recent years. To decrease the velocity of gas through the throat of the furnaces, thereby reducing flue-dust losses, the stock-line areas are constantly being made larger. The top dimensions of the larger furnaces are usually as follows: Stock-line diameter, 19 to 20 ft.; large bell diameter, 14 to 15 ft.; straight section of throat, 5 to 10 ft. high; inwall batter, 1 to 11/4 in. Pe ft. The ratio between the area of the stock line and the area of the large. bell is usually about 1.85 to 1. The stock-line diameter of some smaller furnaces has been increased to that of the hearth diameter of the stack at the expense of the stack batter. Remarkable decreases in flue-dust production are claimed for the so-called " Venturi top," which is achieved by flaring the stock line, in the form of an inverted cone, from a diameter of 17 ft. at 10 ft. below the large bell closed to a diameter of 19 ft. 6 in. at 3 ft. below the large bell closed. Time alone will tell which of the two designs is the better. Because of differences in raw materials, one top may be better for some plants and the other top for other plants. In the search for lower costs and higher efficiencies all operators are, adopting stoves that will maintain maximum hot-blast temperatures with a minimum gas consumption. To meet these requirements, stove capacity of approximately 7 sq. ft. of heating surface and 1.8 cu. ft. of brick volume is required per cubic foot of wind blown per minute.

In a previous paper,' the use of a split graphite tube resistor as a heater element for high-temperature furnaces has been described. The principal advantages of this type of construction are: I. The quadruple resistance or voltage compared with the top-bottom clamp resistor furnace. 2. Free expansion of the resistor. 3. The ease of protection from oxidation by air. 4. The firmness by which it may be held in the compact split clamp. This construction appeared to be well adapted for the fusion of high melting metals which require fusion in a vacuum. Zirconium metal had previously been melted at the Albany Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines in a vacuum arc furnace on a water-cooled plate, using a movable tungsten top electrode.% When larger furnace capacities were desired, this type of construction proved to have its limitations as the largest tungsten rods available were about 7/8 in. in diameter. The supply of direct current of high amperage for producing the desired arc characteristics was also not available. Considerable difficulty was also found in compensating the atmospheric pressure on the flcxible tubing of the movable electrodc, at the same time keeping its movement sufficiently free to enable the striking of an arc on any part of the metal briquet. Among the various materials used for the electrodes in conducting experiments in the vacuum arc furnace was graphite. It was found that zirconium fused in a graphite cup with a carbon arc was contaminated to only 0.2 pct carbon. It was therefore decsed to melt zirconium directly in graphite crucibles. A high-frequency furnace was first used in the attempt to melt the zirconium in graphite crucibles. The high-frequency heating coil was placed outside a silica tube which was evacuated by means of an oil diffusion pump backed up by a mechanical pump. The graphite crucible was thoroughly degassed at 19oo"C before use. Considerable difficulty was experienced in operating at such temperatures in vacuo because, as shown by Zintl,3 carbon vapor formed and reacted with silica accortling to the reaction: SiO² + C = SiO + CO. The silicon monoxide which is volatile at these high temperatures reacted with the zirconium, thereby contaminating it with silicon and oxygen. The presence of carbon monoxide was detected by means of a gas discharge tube placed in the vacuum system as indicated by the pale blue glow of the tube as soon as carbon vapor started to react with the hot silica. The reaction between the carbon vapor and hot silica was avoided by the use of split cylindrical molybdenum shields which were inserted between the graphite crucible

Subsidence has occurred in several areas of the upper Gulf Coast region of Texas, although in most cases this is not evident without precise instrumental leveling. As referred to in this report, the region comprises about 7200 sq miles of the Gulf Coastal Plain and includes all or parts of the following counties: Harris, Fort Bend, Waller, Brazoria, Galveston, Liberty, Chambers, Orange, and Jefferson (Fig. 1). Topographic relief is low, ranging from sea level at the Gulf of Mexico to 300 ft or more in northwestern Harris County. In this upper Gulf Coast region, which embraces the most heavily populated and industrialized parts of Texas, industrial and municipal water supply is obtained chiefly from wells. Largest center of ground-water withdrawal is the Houston-Baytown area, where about 200 million gallons per day was pumped in 1956 for municipal and industrial use. Other large centers of ground-water withdrawal include the Alta Loma sector and the heavily industrialized Texas City area in Galveston County, where about 23 mgd was pumped in 1956. In the Freeport area in Brazoria County about 6 mgd was pumped in 1956 for city and industrial supply. In addition to withdrawals in metropolitan districts, great quantities of ground water are supplied by irrigation wells to thousands of acres of rice. These wells are widely dispersed over many miles, principally in Harris, Waller, Fort Bend, Brazoria, and Liberty counties, and effects of pumping are not so readily noticed as in the industrial and metropolitan sectors. Subsidence: Starting with the 1905-1906 line from Smithville, Tex., to Galveston, the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey has extended a network of first and second-order level lines throughout the upper Gulf Coast region. In 1918, when a line was run from Sinton, Tex., to New Orleans, La., a tie was made to the 1905 leveling at Houston. In 1932-1933 a line was run from Palestine, Tex., to Houston, and a good deal of leveling was carried out in the vicinity of Houston. At this time the entire network was adjusted to the Sea Level Datum of 1929. In 1935-1936 and 1942-1943 several new lines were run and considerable releveling was performed. Supplementary adjustments were made after both the 1936 and 1943 levelings in order to reduce the elevations to the Sea Level Datum of 1929. These adjustments probably masked some of the subsidence that had occurred up to that time, although a certain amount of subsidence was noticed in the 1943 leveling. When several lines in the vicinity of Houston and Galveston were releveled in 1951, the regional nature of the subsidence became apparent.' Direct comparison with the 1943 leveling was possible because the datum was not changed. Comparisons with prior leveling were unreliable because of differences in the early and subsequent datums. In 1953-1954 many lines in the region were re-leveled and in 1957 the entire network, including the elevations previously determined, was readjusted to determine the changes in elevations as indicated by various levelings between 1905 and 1953-1954. In this instance the adjusted elevations were held fixed near the boundaries of the region where the bench marks seem to have remained stable. The only sea-level connection held fixed was the connection of the 1905 leveling to the 1903-1906 tidal series at Galveston. Almost the entire region has been at least slightly affected by the subsidence, some areas to a great extent. The profiles of subsidence (Fig. 2) and the map showing the contours (Fig. 3) illustrate both regional and local changes. A large area of subsidence is centered in the Houston-Baytown district, where the maximum recorded is about 2.7 ft between 1905 and 1954. This probably falls short of the actual maximum, since land surface subsided as much as 2.5 ft in the industrial section alone between 1943 and 1954. Sub-
