Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1943 was approximately 8200 bbl., slightly less than the 1942 production, Counties. Some half dozen wells in Clay, Fentress, and Pickett Counties, pumped intermittently, produced about 1000 barrels. Natural gas was marketed from wells in Morgan and Fentress Counties for consumption in the Sunbright and Jamestown areas, respectively. The Morgan County production was about I0,000,000 cu. ft. and approximately 8,000,000 cu. ft. was produced from the Jamestown gas field from six wells. The production of oil by counties is shown in Table I. Thirteen wells were spudded during the year; three were drilling on Dec. I, 1943. Of the nine completions, representing 10,488 ft. of hole, three were gas' wells of commercial size although only one of them has been placed on the line. The completions are listed in Table 2. THE purposes of this paper are to describe the use of adjustable cut and draw tools as a control test of drawing properties and to point out that no other well-known test or combination of tests determines this quality in zinc and zinc alloys. Rolled zinc has been used for making drawn articles, particularly battery cans, for many years. The development of rolling treatments satisfactory for, these purposes followed the usual course of trial and error experimentation depending upon cooperation with customers to determine what type of material was suitable. A quick test of drawing quality was highly desirable, of course. Scleroscope hardness and temper,1 having no apparent relation to drawing quality, were used simply to check the duplication of rolling treatment and grade of metal. The dynamic ductility1 test, on the other hand, was believed to be so like the drawing operation as to provide a reliable index and came to be taken as the criterion of good drawing properties. Faith in this test was strengthened by the fact that metal having the highest ductility was more satisfactory for operations, such as the manufacture of battery cups, that required several redraws. No distinction was made at that time in specifying metal as to whether it was to be subjected to simple cut and draw, redrawing or forming operations. It developed, however, that in some grades of metal the highest ductility did not coincide with the most satisfactory quality when the material was used for a single draw.

The negative charges on diaphragms of quartz, tungstic oxides, stannic acid, acid dyestuffs, soaps, and glass have for a number of years been explained on the basis of chemical equilibria-a hydrogen ion or light metal ion passes into solution leaving the solid complex ion negatively charged. While there are a number of observations which indicate a proportionality between the ( potential and the streaming potential it should be recognized that all the experimental evidence thus far presented shows that if hydrogen ion concentration is kept at a constant value, electrokinetic phenomena are influenced by salts. The multivalent ions exert the greatest effect on the reduction of osmotic flow. In the interpretation of all electrokinetic data the assumption is made that the potential of the solid remains constant. That this is not true is evidenced by the values of ( potential for quartz in contact with conductivity water as reported by the several investigators and by the authors of this paper.

The substantial expansion of previously discovered gas pools was the principal feature of petroleum activity in West Virginia during 1940. At least one new gas pool was discovered and various other successful wildcat completions may prove to be gas-pool openers. Some slight extensions of oil pools were also made. The new productive territory, principally gas, added by these extensions was approximately 33,800 acres. ' In general, oil activity was slight because of unfavorable crude prices. Gas activity, on the contrary, increased considerably, although the price of gas did not materially change. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 709 new wells were drilled, resulting in 102 new oil wells with I055 bbl. of daily new produc-tion; 468 new gas wells with 633>g47,000 cu. it. of daily open flow; and 139 dry holes. Also, 91 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 143 bbl. and 44,833,000 cu. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 10.34 bbl, per well per day; and the gas average was 1,354,000 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.61 per cent. On deeper drilling to other sands the ratio of failures was 12.I per cent. From an exploratory standpoint, one strictly new gas pool (Lorentz) was opened in Upshur County. Little forecast of its extent or reserve can now be made. The new extensions of various other previously discovered pools, however, give assurance of a new gas reserve that will equal approximately a year of gas demand. In addition to these definite supplies two widely separated Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) wildcats in Jackson County, one of which was completed late in 1940 and the other early in 194.1, may indicate two separate pools or may greatly extend known pools. In south-ern Kanawha County, also, an old Oris-kany-sand well deepened to the White Clinton sand (Sil.) showed a volume of 733,000 cu. ft. and rock pressure of 1800 Ib., giving rather clear assurance that this deep sand, in which only slight quantities of gas had previously been found, should eventually supply much new gas. On the other hand, various deep tests to the Oriskany sand in Harrison, Putnam, Randolph and Wood Counties were totally dry or gave only small volumes of gas, The principal oil wells completed, by counties, were: Calhoun, 15; Clay, Ir; Pleasants, 14; Ritchie, 15; and Roane, 7. Production for the year was estimated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines as 3,444,000 bbl., as compared to 3,684,000 bbl. in 1939. The leading counties in gas-well completions were: Boone, 36; Braxton, 17; Cabell, 25; Calhoun, 16; Clay, 22; Gilm.er, 47; Jackson, 38; Kanatvha, 77; Lincoln, 18; Putnam, 32; IGtchie, 40; and Wayne, 31, Production for the year is estimated by me as I70,000,000,000 cu. ft. as compared to I59,226,000,000 cu. ft.* in 1939. AS these annual occasions in honor of Henry Marion Howe continue through the years, there is progressively less likelihood that the lecturer will have had personal knowledge of Dr. Howe. The present speaker is one of those who unfortunately had no opportunity to come under the inspiring presence of this great metallurgist. A review of Howe's work shows it to cover a comprehensive range of interests and to evidence an impressive richness of detail. Not only was Howe at home in the laboratory, but he was familiar with the processes of iron and steel making and had a real understanding of them writings include much that is descriptive of processes with a wealth of material that is becoming of increasing historical value. He recorded his studies of the theoretical aspects of processes and published at least two process classifications, one in 1890 that was lengthy and somewhat theoretical, and a second in 1906 that was more of a practical listing. Wide as Howe's field of interest was, it is significant of the circumstances of his time that he gave little consideration to raw materials or to their effect on iron and steel making processes. In 1933, Waterhouse, Howe lecturer for that year, presented a descriptive summary of the major steelmaking processes, and in 1946 Joseph discussed the blast furnace process. Otherwise Howe lectures have not dealt with processes as major subjects. In today's lecture, with no effort to describe the mechanical arrangements of iron and steel making facilities, it is proposed to examine the essential technological elements of the processes, to explore the inter-relation of these elements, and particularly to seek recognition and understanding of those factors which determine why certain processes are or are not used. The discussion of this lecture will deal with the major well-known large tonnage processes, with only such attention to processes of minor tonnage and special character as may be warranted for explanation by contrast. Subject to the errors of generalization and the short- comings of condensation involved in presentation limited to a single hour, it is proposed to examine broadly but intensively those operations which convert raw materials into steel. It is an innovation for a Howe lecturer to discuss the raw materials of the iron and steel industry, but the changing circumstances of passing years intensify the influence of raw materials on processes and require the metallurgist to be alert for the process adjustments that may become advisable or mandatory. For a half century the metallurgical processing of iron and steel has followed a surprisingly straight path, but this does not necessarily mean that there are no curves in the road ahead. Analytical expressions are developed for the kinetics of dissolution or growth of a spheroidized, solute rich stoichiometric Precipitate in the surrounding matrix. There are two limiting cases; in one the rate of dissolution or growth is limited by long range solute diffusion through the matrix and in the other by the transfer of atoms across the mrdrix-precipitate interface. In the former case local interfacial equilibrium exists while in the latter it does not and the rate of dissolution or growth is controlled by an interfacial reaction. The analysis treats both limiting cases as well as mixed control in a single development, where it is found that the thermodynamic state of the interface is completely specified by a single parameter, o, defined by where K is the reaction rate constant, D is the matrix solute diffusivity, and R, is the precipitate radiz~s. If K is infinite then a is zero and local equilibrium prevails; if K deviates infinitesimally from zero, then a is very near unity and an interfacial reaction is rate controlling. Mixed control occurs for intermediate values of o. From the analytical results, numbers are computed which are useful in determining the duration of interfacial reaction or mixed control; following this time period, long range diffusion is rate controlling. THE rate controlling process or processes governing phase boundary migration has been the subject of much speculation and investigation. Traditionally, the most widely assumed boundary condition in quantitative treatments of this problem has been that of local interfacial equilibrium. This condition implies that long range diffusion of one or more elements controls the migration and is referred to as "diffusion controlled migration" (herein DCM). In contrast to the above view is the proposition that local interfacial equilibrium does not exist and that transport of atoms across the interface is rate controlling. Consequently, this mechanism is referred to as "interface controlled migration" (herein ICM). International developments affecting foreign in- vestments in 1960-61 were many, varying from region to region and differing with respect to various categories of investments. Total value of U.S. private investment abroad in 1960 was approximately $32.7 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over 1959. Production and distribution of mineral resources was, by a sizeable margin, the most important function of American capital working in foreign countries in 1960. Investment in mining or petroleum interests totaled approximately $14 billion, or 42% of all direct foreign investment. In- vestments by industry for 1960 were as follows: Petroleum-10.9 billions, Mining-3.0 billions, Manufacturing-11.2 billions, Utilities-2.5 billions, other-5.1 billions. American investors found Canada and Latin America to be most desirable in 1960 with the greatest percentage of American capital in all areas centered in the petroleum and mining industries. The areal breakdown of total American investments is as follows: Canada-$11.2 billions, Latin America-$8.4 billions, Western Europe-$6.6 billions, Middle East-$1.2 billions, Far East-$1.2 billions, Africa-$.9 billions, other areas-$3.2 billions.

Iron ore mining in the Adirondack region of northern New York dates back to the Revolutionary War. It is recorded that Benedict Arnold in his campaigns in the Lake Champlain area during the American Revolution utilized the local ores to produce armament and cannon balls. Through the efforts of early pioneers, the iron mining industry in northern New York gained impetus so that in the 1880's mines in the area accounted for nearly one fourth of the iron ore produced in the United States. Both magnetite and red hematite ores were mined during this period. With the discovery of the Lake Superior ores, the iron ore industry in New York started to decline and remained relatively unimportant until 1938. Modern day methods of mining and beneficiating sufficiently high tonnages of low-grade ores to justify the large expenditures for plant and equipment prompted a resurgence in northern New York mining. During the past several years, the production of iron ore from the Adirondack magnetites has greatly increased, and production which amounted to .6%, of the United States total during the 1918-1928 period (Mining and Metallurgy, November 1943) has been increased to 2.85% of the total in 1948. This paper is a case history of an exploration venture for base metals, begun by the Rocky Mountain District of Bear Creek Mining Company in 1952 and completed in 1954. The project was based on the idea of W. S. Burbank, U. S. Geological Survey, that commercial deposits of base metals might occur in Paleozoic sediments beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the Southern Bonanza mining district, Colorado. Here, an area of andesitic rocks, four square miles in extent, has been argillized, pyritized, chloritized and silicified. Geological, geophysical and geochemical studies were followed by the diamond drilling of three holes totalling 6,220 feet. Further alteration ang geochemical studies were made on the cores from these holes. A brief review of the alteration and geologic mapping, colored aerial photograph interpretation, geochemical soil and rock sampling, magnetic, gravity and radio-metric surveys are presented together with some conclusions regarding this work. This paper is a case history of an exploration venture for base metals, begun by the Rocky Mountain District of Bear Creek Mining Company in 1952 and completed in 1954. BASIS FOR THE PROJECT The project was based on the idea of W. S. Burbank (1947, p. 444) that commercial deposits of base metals might occur in Paleozoic sediments beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the Southern Bonanza mining district, Colorado. Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, including the favorable Leadville limestone, are exposed three miles south of the altered area, and reason exists to believe that they might underlie it within a reasonable depth. Alteration of pre-mineral volcanic rocks has been used successfully as a guide to concealed orebodies in the Main Tintic and East Tin tic mining districts, Utah (Bill-ingsley, 1933, p. 120-122; Lovering et al, 1949; Howd, 1957, p. 124-134; Cook, 1957, p. 73) and could be a useful guide here. GENERAL GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE The Northern and Southern Bonanza mining districts are northwest of the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, just within the northeastern edge of the San Juan volcanic province. The districts are1ocated on the southern extension of the Sawatch uplift, a prorninent northwest-trending structural high. "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof." Science knows no national boundaries, knows no country. These views might be taken as premises for a discussion of the development of the mineral resources of the world. Yet how far man is removed from such broadminded ideals! In this day of jealousy and dread, of political machinations and statesmen's maneuverings, of rantings and crass ravings against fellow-beings, man's attitudes towards God's gifts are but the measure of the smallness of man. That the exploitation of mineral wealth should be for the common good, none will deny, but what is meant by "common"? Is it for the common good of The Pennsylvania State College, Pennsylvania, the United States of America, or the world? If man is big enough and honest enough to state categorically that by "common," as used in the context above, is meant that the utilization of the mineral wealth should be for the mutual benefit of all mankind, and that all concerned strive to see that such a viewpoint is executed, then there is brighter hope for the future. It is to be hoped that the world may have at least a few years or possibly a generation of peace. What can be done in these years to work towards the ultimate goal of human improvement? In 1942 Grossmannl proposed that the hardenability of a steel may be calculated from its chemical composition by considering the base hardenability associated with its carbon content and grain size and multiplying this base by factors for each element present. Since Grossmann's original publication, several investigaton2-6 have reexamined the multiplying factors for the individual elements and in general have found that the multiplying principle is valid. However, some of the individual factor curves developed have been in poor agreement. Inasmuch as the carbon-factor curve obtained by Grossmann was dependent Lipon the factors for all the other alloying elements present in the steel, it logically followed that his results were in need of correction in the light of the new data available for manganese, silicon, and the other alloying elements. Furthermore, in order to avoid the possibility that errors in the manganese, silicon, or other curves might influence the carbon-factor curve, investigation of iron-carbon alloys containing little or no manganese and silicon was necessary. That the effect of carbon on hardenability was greater than indicated by Grossmann is shown by a comparison of the diameters of completely hardened rounds of iron-carbon alloys with the ideal critical diameter calculated from Grossmann's factors. These alloys have a greater hardenability in a finite quench than predicted by Grossmann's factors for an infinite quench (Table I). Among the other important variables that were in need of further investigation were the effect of deoxidation practice on the grain-size correction curves and the effect of stable carbide-forming elements on the depth of hardening. Most Of the work by Kramer, Hafner, and Toleman4 was done on silicon-killed steels. It was not known whether Gross-mann's grain-size correction curves, determined on aluminum-killed steels, was valid when applied to steels with different deoxidation practice. More data on the

The expansion of the previously discovered gas pools and an intensified search for additional pools in the Oriskany and deeper sands were the principal petroleum activities in West Virginia during 1941. One small oil pool was discovered and another was considerably extended. One small gas pool was discovered, several isolated well discoveries were expanded into definite pools, and various recognized pools were substantially increased. The proved oil territory of the state was increased about 600 acres and the proved gas territory about 45,000 acres. The new discoveries of oil did not equal withdrawals but gas reserves added were greater than gas withdrawals. Oil activity, as in the past several years, was slight because of unfavorable crude prices. Most operators prefer to leave oil in the ground rather than to drill for it without a better return. Gas activity increased greatly because of better demand, even though the price of gas did not improve. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 838 new wells were drilled, resulting in 114 new oil wells with 2606 bbl. of daily new production; 558 new gas wells with 949,226,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow; and 166 dry holes. Also, 86 old wells were drilled to deeper sands with 9 bbl. and 56,030,000 cu. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 22.86 bbl. per well per day; and the gas average was 1,701,000 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 13.61 per cent. On deeper drilling to other sands the ratio of failures was 15.12 per cent. From an exploratory standpoint one strictly new oil pool (Higginbotham Run) was opened in Kanawha County and one strictly new gas pool (Lost Run) in Taylor County. One entirely isolated wildcat gave commercial Oriskany-sand gas production and may open a pool. Various other wildcats greatly extended the boundaries of known Oriskany-sand gas pools and various others may have opened new pools in the shallow sands. On the other hand, various Oriskany tests in Harrison, Monongalia, Roane and Wood Counties were dry and all five tests to the White Clinton sand (Sil.) in Boone, Harrison, Kanawha and Wood Counties failed to find commercial production. The principal oil wells completed, by counties, were: Calhoun, 24; Clay, 7; Gilmer, 6; Hancock, 9; Kanawha, 9; Pleasants, 10; and Ritchie, 14. Production for the year was estimated by the Oil Weekly as 3,421,000 bbl., compared with U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 3,444,000 bbl. in 1940. The leading counties in gas-well completions were: Boone, 32; Braxton, 19; Cabell, 16; Calhoun, 46; Clay, 20; Gilmer, 37; Jackson, 94; Kanawha, 82; Lincoln, 17; Putnam, 46; Ritchie, 33; Upshur, 20; and Wayne, 33. Production for the year is estimated by the author as 210,000,000,000 cu. ft., as compared to the U. S. Bureau of Mines' final figures of 188,751,000,000 cu. ft.* in 1940.

CIRCULAR steel sets have proved to be more economical for supporting slusher drifts in the block-caving mining used by the Miami Copper Co., at Miami, Ariz. The first steel sets were installed in July 1950, and up to July 1, 1951, about 474 sets (approximately 1896 ft of drift) were placed; the bulk of this work was done in the latter six months. All of the places selected for the steel were in heavy ground. Based on this experience the following definite conclusions can be drawn:

IN the early stages of a titanium brazing investigation, binary titanium systems partially or completely known and fundamental metallurgical data were surveyed to select the pure metal most likely to be satisfactory for producing a ductile high strength joint. The phase diagrams for the purpose of this survey were classified into two groups: 1—systems with large solubility in ß titanium, but negligible solubility in a titanium, and 2—systems with large solubility in a titanium. Those metals with melting points believed to be too high or too low for titanium brazing (Tim = 1730°C) were eliminated from consideration. The melting points of vanadium, tungsten, tantalum, hafnium, zirconium, and the platinum group are too high and those of zinc, lead, cadmium, and tin are too low. The remaining metals were grouped as follows: 1—large ß solubility: Cr,¹ Mn,² Fe;³ CO,4 Ni,5 Cu,6 Be,' Si." —large a solubility: Al.9

The additions: o, Sn, Zr, Cb, Mo, and V were studied for their effects on the a/a + Ti3A1 boundary of Ti-A1 base ternary alloys. These additions were chosen because of their importance to commercial titanium alloy practice—oxygen as the major impurity (in terms of influence on mechanical properties) and the others as major alloying additions. The composition and temperature ranges of investigation varied according to the system as shown in Table I. The principal means of investigation was light-microscopy. The basis of the ternary studies was the recently determined titanium-rich end of the Ti-A1 system.' MATERIALS, METHODS, AND PROCEDURES Ingots were prepared in 15 g size for all alloys except those of the Ti-Al-Mo and Ti-A1-V systems which were prepared in 20 g size. These alloys were prepared from high-purity, electrolytically refined titanium obtained from the Bureau of Mines, Boulder City Metallurgical Laboratory, Boulder City, Col., and Chicago Development Corp., Riverdale, Md., for the 15 g and 20 g ingots, respectively. The alloying additions were obtained from commercial sources, and were at least of 99.9 pct purity, except the V-15 wt pct A1 master alloy for vanadium additions. This alloy was of 98.2 pct purity; the major impurities were 0.37 wt pct Fe and 0.38 wt pct Si. The ingots were prepared by multiple melting in a nonconsum-able-electrode arc furnace. The ingots were covered with Markal coating "CR-T22" (Markal Co., Chicago) to protect them from scaling. Markal coating is applied as a slurry of solids in a volatile carrier liquid. The coated article is air dried. Upon heating to the hot working temperature the coating fuses to form a glassy, protective film. The ingots were heated to 1000°C and rolled to 0.16 in. thickness, reheating after each pass. The glassy film was removed by sand blasting. Ten mils were removed from all surfaces by grinding and/or pickling (3 pct HF, 30 pct HN03, balance water). Grinding was always followed by pickling to remove traces of the grindmg medium. Hydrogen removal was accomplished by vacuum annealing at 1000°C for 2 hr to a final pressure of about 0.02 µ Hg. This was followed by annealing in evacuated Vycor bulbs (800°C, 2 hr, ice brine quenched (IBQ)) in order to maximize ductility. The materials were then lightly pickled and cold rolled to 0.12 in. thickness or cracking, whichever occurred first. After rolling, 1/2 by 1/4 in. specimens were cut for the equilibration anneals given in Table 11 and carried out as previously described.1 Final polishing of the specimens for metallographic examination was done by electrolytic means. Specimens were first examined without etching under bright field and polarized light illumination, for this is the only means of detecting the "two-phase" phenomenon.1,2 The term "two-phase syndrome" refers to Ti-A1 al-loys which appear on the bases of their chemical, phys-ical, and mechanical properties, to be two-phase, but are actually single phase and inhomogeneous in composition. Since processing and heat treatment of the alloys of the first group were completed before the two-phase syndrome was discovered, a number of the specimens were found to exhibit this phenomenon—80 pct of those of the Ti-Al-Zr system, 5 pct of those of the Ti-Al-Sn system, 30 pct of those of the Ti-Al-Zr system. The affected specimens were homogenized by heating above the ß transus temperature and quenching. The heat treatment and working schedules to accomplish this are given in Table 111. A laboratory stud], has been made to determine what factors affect the penetration rate of roller bits, diamond bits and drag bits in rock drilling with clay /water muds. The rather simple relations that exist when pressures in and around the borehole are equal become more conzplicated when under down-hole conditions the penetration rate is hampered by the existence of a pressure differential between the mud at the hole bottom and the pore liquid at cutting depth. Expressions that have been derived for both the penetration rate and the magnitude of the pressure differential in permeable rock together fully account for operating, rock, mud and bit variables. In impermeable rock a similar pressure differential is caused by the bit action itself. In all cases, the pressure difierential and the reduction in penetration rate increase with the effectiveness of the plastering at the bottom of the hole by mud particles. Where bits are employed whose action is largely that of crushing, however, the plastering may become even more effective owing to the addition of rock particles rubbed into the pores of the rock. With roller bits, a plastically hehaving layer may be formed, which causes a further reduction in penetration. In the case of bits whose action is chiefly scraping, moreover, penetration may be arrested by the bit's becoming balled-up. The various adverse effects are reduced by thorough scavenging of the hole bottom. This paper shows how with jet bits the efficiency of such scavenging may he improved by suitable choice of the position of the nozzles. INTRODUCTION The reduction in a bit's penetration rate with increasing depth of hole has been the subject of many investigations. Various investigators ',' have independently reached the conclusion that this reduction occurs not so much because the rock-breaking process becomes more difficult as it does because the lifting of the rock fragments is impaired by a fluid pressure differential holding the fragments down. When such a pressure differential can be avoided, as in air drilling and to a smaller extent in water drilling, penetration rates remain high. Although the range of applicability of these techniques is being extended, most oil wells still have to be drilled with mud. In this paper we present the results of laboratory experiments carried out to determine what factors govern the hold down effect encountered in mud drilling. In the course of this investigation, the well known importance of bottom scavenging came more and more into prominence. Not only may it reduce the magnitude of the hold-down forces, but also it appeared to be a means of preventing the accumulation of a plastic mass of cuttings and mud on the hole bottom and bit which may cause penetration to cease almost completely. So that the effects of fluid pressures may be more readily understood, the factors that govern penetration rate in the absence of these pressures will first be discussed. The effect of down-hole pressures will then be assessed for the case of permeable rock where fluid pressures are well defined, and it will be demonstrated how rock strengthening due to confining can be accounted for. Subsequently, fluid pressures in less-permeable rock will be examined; we will show that in impermeable rock it is the bit action that governs fluid-pressure distribution and hold-down. In the case of poor scavenging and/or high bit load. cutting cake manifests itself. The effect, like various others. appears to depend on the type of bit used. From the very beginning, therefore, we shall base our discussion on the three main types of bits used in rotary oil-well drilling— roller bits, diamond bits and drag bits. Since space is limited, it will be impossible to make more than a passing reference to many aspects of the problem. Moreover. certain relations that are not of primary irnportance to our argument will unavoidably have to be stated in a somewhat dogmatic fashion, and the experimental data on which these are based necessarily must be omitted. EQUIPMENT The drilling experiments were performed on three machines, of which one has been designed for the realistic simulation of down-hole pressure conditions. HIGH-PRESSURES MACHINE In this machine (diagramed in Fig. 1) the mud, pore and confining pressures can all be adjusted independently. The foil-covered rock sample contained in the inner pressure vessel is confined by oil that is pressurized by means of a hand pump. The pore space of the watersaturated sample is connected to an arrangement which keeps the pressure in the pore space constant regardless of the rate of filtrate flow through the sample.

The heat treatmmt of plutonium was studied using the Jominy end-quenching technique commonly used for determining the hardenability of steel. Plutonium specimens were end-guenched from temperatures in each of the ß, y, d, d') and E phases. One series of specimens with a low-iron content, 165 pprn Fe, and another gvoup with a high-iron content, 678 pprn Fe, were used in order to study the effect of a Pu-Pu,Fe eutectic network on the hardness and micro-structure. Hardness traverses indicated no significant variations in hardness with either cooling rate or quench temperature. Metallographic studies indicated major effects on microstructure. Grain size was found to vary markedly with quenching temperature and cooling rate. It was determined that the Pu-PueFe eutectic network could be modified extensively by heat treatment, including spheroi -dization in the y phase and 6 phase below 413°C. An unidentified spheroidal inclusion was observed to go into solution in the delta and higher temperature phases. 1 HE element plutonium is unique among metals in that it has six allotropic forms in the solid state.' These have been designated' as the a, ß, y, d, d', and phases. The respective phase transformations occur at approximate temperatures of 122", 210°, 319°, 450°, and 480°C with a melting point at 640°C. With this number of phase transformations it becomes pertinent to consider the effect of heat treatment and cooling rate in the various phases on the microstructure and hardness of plutonium. To determine; the effect of a wide range of cooling rates, the Jominy end-quenching technique was applied to cylindrical plutonium specimens. In addition, since the presence of iron in amounts greater than 500 pprn is common in plutonium and results in a network of the Pu-Pu6Fe eutectic, it was decided to study heat treatment effects on two bomb reduced plutonium buttons with different iron contents. A low iron button containing 165 ppm Fe and a high iron button containing 678 ppm Fe were selected for this comparison. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Experimental Material. The cylindrical bars for Jominy quenching were cast from button stock in vacuo in MgO coated graphite molds. Metal pouring temperature was approximately 950°C and the molds were preheated to 300°C. The castings were machined to 0.5 in. diam. by 2.5 in. long cylinders. Chemical analysis and density data for the two groups of Jominy specimens containing different iron contents are presented in Table I. Except for iron, heats 19-12-1 and 20-2-1 are comparable within the limits of analytical accuracy. Representative specimens from the low-iron and high-iron bars were taken for metallographic examination. The low iron specimen was found to have extensive microcracking, Fig. 1. In addition, numerous unidentified spheroidal inclusions were present, Fig. 17. The average grain size of the low-iron plutonium is 0.068 mm, Fig. 4. In the high-iron plutonium, a Pu-Pu6Fe eutectic network is prominent, Fig. 7. The average size of the network is 0.100 mm. Unidentified spheroidal inclusions were also common in the high-iron plutonium. The average grain size of the high-iron plutonium is 0.036 mm. Experimental Technique. A Jominy end-quenching fixture was fabricated for glove box use. A 2.5 in. water height was used with an orifice of 0.250 in. ID. The orifice to specimen distance was maintained at 0.5 in. Annealing temperatures of 160°, 265°, 400°, 465°, and 535°c were chosen for the study of the effect of quenching from ß, y, d, d', and e phases on microstructure and hardness. During quenching, cooling curves were obtained from the Jominy specimens at distances from the quenched end of 1/16, 1/8, 3/8, 3/4, 1-1/4, and 2 in. Cooling rate calculations were made from the cooling curves for temperature intervals of 100° to 110° 160" to 170°, 330" to 340°, 420° to 430°, and 490° to 500°c.
