Oil well drilling muds prepared with lubricating aids such as oil, graphite or mica will not produce a sufficiently strong protective lubricant film for the bit bearing surfaces under high load conditions encountered in drilling operations. Consequently, the damage to the bearing surfaces resulting from the absence of such a film frequently results in a shortening of the drill bit life. Several different types of extreme pressure lubricating additives for use in muds have been developed. These arlrlitives are capable of providing a protective lubricating film for bearing surfaces subjected to high load pressures. A modified version of the Timken lubricant tester, an instrument commonly used for testing the extreme pressure lubricating properties of oils, is used for measuring and controlling the lubricating qualities of the mud. Comparison tests made in the laboratory with 55/8-in. tricone bits drilling on steel plates immersed in extreme pressure lubricating muds and conventional muds showed that the bearing life of those bits tested in the lrrbricating mud was three to four times greater than obtained with conventional muds. Drilling tests made with extreme pressure lubricating muds in West Texas increased over-all bit life three to fourfold, reduced drilling torque and wear on drill pipe and drill collars. INTRODUCTION Roller bit cones contain roller, ball and journal-type bearings that are subjected to very heavy loading during drilling operations in which the only lubricant available for these bearings is either water or drilling mud. These bearings must be able to operate satisfac- torily in order for the cutting structures on the surface of the cones to be fully utilized. Frequently, the bearings wear to the point that the cones freeze and the bit must be pulled before the cutting structures on the cones become worn. In some instances the bearings continue to turn with severe wear but the cones, which are held on the bit by the bearings, drop off; and this causes an expensive fishing job. In other instances the bearings wear to the point that the cones pinch in causing an undergauge hole and delays to ream the hole. The advantage of increasing bit bearing life is self-evident. Because of inability to control the internal wear of bits while drilling, it was felt that improvement of the lubricating qualities of the circulating mud would be helpful. However, the often-discussed lubricating property attributed to muds has been a rather vague and intangible one. The literature has implied that the oil-emulsion muds are more effective lubricants than non-emulsion muds. Actually, there has been no direct method of measuring the lubricating property of muds which would indicate that one mud was better than another; there has been no way to determine whether the lubricating property of any mud was adequate. Furthermore, in comparing lubricating properties of muds, two qualities should be considered—the coefficient of friction and the extreme pressure lubricating qualities. For example, graphite can reduce the coefficient of friction, but does not provide a strong enough lubricating film to protect bit bearings subjected to high loads. The primary object of the investigation reported herein was to find a method for prolonging the bearing life of drill bits; and considering the heavy loads used in drilling, it was felt necessary to find both a method of measuring lubricating properties under high load conditions and methods of establishing effective lubrication under these conditions. Extreme pressure lubrication deals with that realm of lubrication where metal surfaces are in rubbing contact with each other under very high pressures. These pressures may be quite high, as for example,

This issue presents the first of several articles making up the Bump Symposium, which was held at the 1958 Annual Meeting of AIME. Other Symposium papers will appear in the September issue of Mining Engineering. THE term mountain bump describes the sudden rupture of one or more coal pillars under excessive stress. These bursts occur with varying degrees of violence and sometimes include adjacent strata, especially the bottom rock. Many failures do not develop enough violence to be dangerous and are regarded as an aid to coal production, but severe occurrences are accompanied by tons of flying coal, dense clouds of dust, and excessive gas emission. Such bursts sometimes throw heavy machinery several feet. Major factors to be considered in the problem are the nature of the strata above and below the seam and the depth of cover. Bumps are classified as to their nature, extent of damage, and point of occurrence, e. g., face bump, coal bump, high side bump, low side pavement bump, and district bump. The problem is extremely complex, and it cannot be over-emphasized that preventive measures, if they are to be successful, must be based on a thorough study of conditions in the individual mine. In western Canada, for example, the McGillivray mine, operating in a 9-ft seam at 2000 ft, has experienced severe bumps, but there have been no occurrences in the International mine, which operates in the same coal seam at 2400 ft, where the coal averages 17 ft thick. Differences in conditions governing the operation of these two mines are described in one of the following articles (see page 883). Again, most bumps in coal mines take place along pillar extraction lines, but at the Sunnyside mine in Utah they also occur a long way from active workings and sometimes in virgin territory. It is usual, too, for such failures to occur under fairly deep cover. But at Sunnyside, to cite only one instance, there have been disturbances along the main fault zone under less than 500 ft of cover. All too often conditions favorable to bumps are revealed only by actual mining—at Springhill No. 2 mine, drilling in roof and pavement strata disclosed a 60-ft sandstone bed after operations had started— and where extraction has advanced too far for preventive measures to be incorporated in the mining plan, districts have had to be abandoned. But in an era when premium ores are being rapidly depleted in the face of rising demands, abandonment is not easily justified. There must be systematic planning to eliminate coal mine bumps, insofar as this is possible. As in the Gary district of West Virginia (see page 888) much has been accomplished by planned operations based on known factors in bump control. But even this is not enough. Precise instrumentation is needed to indicate where bumps are likely to occur, and in both the U. S. and Canada stress analysis studies are being carried out with this object in view. These pages reveal the progress being made.

EARLY in November attention was focused on the interchange of views between Paris and Wash- ington with respect to the proposed examination of Germany's capacity to pay. It appeared finally that the limits imposed by the French were too narrow and consequently the conversations were discontinued. In Germany there were stirring events. Hitler, with Ludendorf in the open, attempted a coup d'etat in Bavaria, but failed quickly and ignominiously. The former crown prince re-entered Germany, with the sanction of the republic, and took up his abode at his castle in Silesia. On Nov. 13 Chancellor Stresemann informed repre-sentatives of the Rhineland and the Ruhr that those territories thenceforth must shift for themselves politically, economically and financially, the federal treasury being no longer capable of caring for unem-ployment in the occupied territory. This was equiva-lent to putting the burden of supporting the people of that region upon. France and Belgium. There have been negotiations toward the creation of a Rhenish-Westphalian state, independent of Prussia, but under the sovereignty of the Reich. Failing to receive a vote of confidence at the end of this month, the Stresemann Ministry resigned. President Ebert considers it may be necessary to create a government independent of Parliamentary authority. The Ruhr Industrialists have signed an agreement with France until April 15, 1924 by which they have agreed to pay back coal taxes for the first ten months of this year, and deliver 18 per cent. of their production as reparations until the expiration of the agreement. The British government found itself in a precarious position with respect to support and a dissolution of Parliament was announced, with a general election to occur early in December.

The general term "tar sand" refers to sand that contains varying amounts of dense, viscous petroleum. Tar sand deposits have been found throughout the world, often in the same geographical area as conventional petroleum. The largest one by far is known as the Athabasca Tar Sands, in the province of Alberta, Canada. Actually a group of three deposits, these particular sands underlie an aggregate area of more than 12,000 sq miles. Current estimates place the contained raw petroleum at about 700 billion bbl; and via currently available technology, the amount of recoverable synthetic oil may be as much as 300 billion bbl-which is roughly equivalent to five times the combined US and Canadian total crude oil reserves. With the ever-widening gap between energy supply and demand, mining and petroleum companies are now evaluating all possible energy resources-both developed and underdeveloped-and, certainly, the Athabasca Tar Sand deposit is one of the more important ones to merit such attention. The first section in ME deals with the geology and historical developments; the other four sections, with mining methods, extraction technology, economics, and outlook.

A method of calculating the changes in blast-furnace performance brought about by burden and/or blast modifications is presented. Essentially the method consists of three simultaneous equutions derived from materials and heat balances. These equations can be used not only to evaluate quantitatively the effect of changes in process operating variables on furnace performance, but also to provide a useful means of evaluating changes in process variables which cannot be measured directly. It has been customary for a number of years to use simple heat and materials balances as a basis for assessing blast-furnace practice. A good example of the method used to set up these balances is that proposed by Joseph and Neustatter.1 This approach to process assessment has limited utility, however, in that it cannot be used to predict the furnace coke rate or production under new operating conditions. Using an approach based on multiple correlation of blast-furnace variables, R V. Flint2 has developed an equation which may be used to predict the change in coke rate that will result from some changes in operating conditions with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Although this equation has useful applications in production planning, it cannot be used to study the relationships between the operating variables and the fundamental thermochemi-cal characteristics of the process. In attempting to analyze the blast-furnace process quantitatively, the idea of dividing the furnace into zones3 may at first appear attractive. In our present state of knowledge, however, it is not possible to define with any accuracy the physical limits of such zones in relationship to their temperatures or to the reactions which may occur in them. Although its application is restricted, the zonal approach to blast-furnace analysis is useful in some instances. For example, the change in the calculated flame temperature in the "combustion zone" caused by injecting steam constitutes information which is helpful in understanding why the addition of steam to the blast is best accompanied by an increase in blast temperature. The zonal approach cannot, at the present time, be used to establish the relationships between process variables and process performance if the whole process rather than part of it is to be considered. One of the earliest approaches to the problem of relating blast-furnace operating variables to pro- duction and coke rate was that developed by Marshall.4 Essentially Marshall's work showed that it was possible to estimate the performance of a furnace by solving three simultaneous equations which consisted of rudimentary carbon and heat balances plus a further equation relating the production, wind rate, and the carbon burned at the tuyeres. Although these equations did not include all of the chemical and thermal variables of the process, their derivation and application seems to be the earliest attempt which achieved any success in relating prior furnace operating data to the calculation of furnace performance under different blast conditions. Work carried out in Germany has been directed mainly towards prediction of coke rates using material and thermal balances rather than statistical methods. wesemann5 used prior furnace operating data as part of the basis for predicting the change in coke rate accompanying a change in burden composition. This author employed a method of successive approximations to estimate the secondary changes in slag volume and stone rate brought about by the change in coke rate. The most recent analysis, which seems to have been developed concurrently with the thermochemical model presented in this paper, has been described by Georgen.6 This author has succeeded in improving on Wesemann's approach by expressing the total changes in the slag volume and stone rate in terms of the change in coke rate itself. This is accomplished in a manner similar to that used in the thermochemical model described in this paper. Although Georgen makes use of a calculated furnace heat loss, he does not relate the heat loss per unit of hot metal to the production rate as is done in the present work. Georgen's approach may be used to calculate the changes in materials requirements accompanying changes in furnace operation; it cannot be used to assess the resulting changes in production. The fact that blast-furnace behavior can be interpreted by consideration of the heat requirements of the process was demonstrated by Dancy, Sadler, and Lander.7 In the analysis of blast-furnace operation with oxygen and steam injection these authors showed that it was possible to account for the changes in production and coke rate

The analyses given in Table I. were made several years ago at my request at a plant using Lake ores. They are of two furnaces, one making basic, the other Bessemer pig— they gave 6 casts each in 24 hr., also two flushes of cinder between each cast. They are offered simply for the sake of reference as, so far as I know, it is unusual to find so frequent full analyses made and none are on record. The variations in manganese-content in the first and second flushes on the basic furnace are interesting, if no more than a freak—the first flush being invariably higher in manganese. The iron-content of the two slags from an average of 12 flushes shows: Basic. Bessemer. Per Cent. Per Cent. Total iron...................................... 2.85 1.70 Combined iron................................ 0.72 0.52 Free iron....................................... 2.13 1.18 The greater iron-loss in the basic slag, while known, has never heretofore been so clearly set forth. This may modify the arrangement for handling slag; heretofore usually determined by proximity of the dumping-heap. If a nearby heap is used on contiguous territory, in the past, tilting molten-slag pots were used. If the Pittsburg flood-records for 30 years are a fair criterion the government regulations were inadequate, and molten slag was dumped in such a manner as to throttle the Monongahela at the time of the spring thaws. At Pittsburg the slag, where it is carried to a distance, is frequently granulated in pits and then removed in cars to which it is conveyed by clam-shell buckets. This practice is also quite customary where the slag is intended for the manufacture of slag cement. The production of 500 tons of cast-iron daily means about 300 tons of- slag and at 2.113 per cent. equals 6.4 tons

Definition The term mineral inventory is a relatively new designation, born of the computer age and grown to common usage with the development of computer techniques for extending drill-hole sample values to regularly gridded data blocks representing in situ mineral values. The term has been generally accepted by geologists and engineers because it has a precise meaning which avoids many of the ambiguities of ore reserve. A mineral inventory is an estimated inventory of mineral in place and is usually achieved by dividing the deposit into regularly spaced gridded blocks to which are assigned estimated values using various extension techniques. A mineral Inventory makes no presumptions about the minability of the blocks or their cutoff grade. A mineral inventory estimate may be good or poor according to how much is known about the deposit, how extensively it has been sampled, and what techniques have been employed to assign estimated grade to the blocks Such an inventory, however, does not change with time, economic conditions, or mining technology, but only with new and better data and methods. Thus, the mineral Inventory is an excellent designation for describing mineral value distributron within a deposit's geological setting

DATA concerning the actual net energy required for pulverizing coal are lacking from the literature on coal pulverization. Power data given in the literature concern gross power and frequently include the power expended on the air blast or product-conveyor system, as well as power lost through friction in the pulverizer itself. Consequently, such data supply no information regarding the net energy consumed in pulverizing or the relative grinding resistance of various coals. In the study of coal pulverizing much work has been done on what is known as "grindability-index numbers," but grindability tests have seldom considered the energy input (that is, the "cause" part of the system "cause and effect"). There are many records of the effect, but even these have questionable value because the "grindability" tests did not make a pulverized product by a method comparable with commercial pulverizers. In many of the tests, only a selected part of the coal was ground, and the remainder continued to be an unknown factor. Furthermore, none of the grindability tests provide the balanced circulating load common to all modern commercial pulverizing. In order to obtain better understanding of the fundamental principles of coal pulverizing, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the "cause" phase; that is, the net energy input or net power excluding friction between the moving parts of the machine. As a first step in the investigation, it was necessary to design and construct a laboratory machine in which no friction-loss corrections are involved, which could grind and finish a minus-3/4 -inch feed, which could be emptied rapidly and completely, which could operate with a continuous feed and finish in an air separator; and, most essential of all, which would be equipped with a measuring device for recording only that portion of the total power consumed in actual pulverizing, hereafter referred to as "net energy input" or "net horse-powerhours." The channel-roller pulverizer here-inafter described is believed to meet these requirements. HISTORY OF THE MACHINE The work started when Ralph W. Smith, engineer, St. Genevieve Lime Co., St. Genevieve, Mo., was appointed one of the consultants of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, to develop a machine for testing the abrasiveness of coal. Smith had already developed a machine for testing the abrasiveness of dentifrices,1 and it was thought the same principles might be applied to coal. THE OUTBREAK of World War II found Phelps Dodge, thanks to both foresight and good fortune, in a position to increase production of its mines and factories to meet the insatiable military and domestic needs of the times, far beyond all previous records. With the timely completion of the expansion program at Morenci, the company's copper output rose to approximately 447 million pounds in 1942 and to over 478 mil- lion pounds the next year, compared to some 300 million pounds in 1939. To meet the civil and military needs for fabricated cop- per products, the Phelps Dodge Copper Products Corporation carried out an expansion program comparable in size to that of the Phelps Dodge mining operations. It built new plants, enlarged and reorganized those already in operation, multiplied the number of technical experts on its staff, adopted new methods and new machines for the new prod-

When separate treatment of sand and slime by cyanidation was the rule rather than the exception, as now, and when gravity concentration, rather than flotation, was the accepted method of dressing copper, lead, zinc and other base ores, classification was a separate step in ore treatment. Today, however, the picture is much different. The trend toward all-slime treatment in cyanidation and flotation has made fine closed-circuit grinding essential, and the mechanical classifier is of equal importance with the mill in the preparation of an ore for its treatment. Actually, a mill and classifier are a unit, a variation in either affecting the desired results. In developing this thesis—the mutual interdependence of the rotary mill and the classifier in modern fine-grinding practice—it would be well to consider first the different types of classifiers and mills in use today, their scope and limitations and the factors governing their selection. From such a basis as this a logical approach may be made to modern closed-circuit fine grinding, the evolution of multiple-stage grinding practice, the relation of the classifier to the mill and, finally, the trend to higher and higher circulating sand loads in the mill-classifier circuit. Such data as are germane to the subject will be given to support the thesis advanced. The authors are to he complimented for a timely presentation of useful information concerning application of heat to oil reservoirs to increase the rate and ultimate recovery of oil. The solution for heated area resulting from constant rate injection of a hot fluid, presented by the authors, and the fluid-flow analogy, solved by Carter,' are particularly interesting in that 110 restriction is placed on the direction of development of the heated area. It is not necessary that the heated area grow radially. Thus the solution could provide useful information for heat injection in any type of well pattern with any specified swept area data. However, it was assumed in the development that the heated region would remain at a constant clevatcd temperature. Vertical heat losses were computed on this basis. Physically. the assumption that the heated region will remain at a constant temperature (independent of distance from the injection point) appears to require that the heat injection medium be stcam, or other condensible gases near the boding point at injection pressure. If a hot liquid below the boiling point or a hot gas considerably above saturation temperature were used, the temperature of the heated region would decrease with distance from the injection well. Lauwerier2 has discussed this problem for a linear system. (See also Jenkins and Aronolsky; and McNiel and Nelson.') Thus, the authors' solution applies more nearly to steam injection than to hot water injection or hot, non-condensable gas injection. Assuming steam as the injection medium, it appears that steam would pass through the constant-temperature heated region and condense upon contact with the unheated sand. The tempcrature in the condensing region would probably be governed by the release of heat of vaporization required for phase equilibrium at the existing pressure distribution. Temperatures in the region would also be influenced by vaporization of hydrocarbon. Thus, it is doubtful that an expression for radial temperature distribution based on heat conduction only (such as the authors' Eq. 9) would have practical significance. As pointed out by Marx and Langenheim, the growth of the heated area under constant rate steam drive will eventually be limited economically by vertical heat loss. The possibility of continuing to move heat economically by cold water injection or by increasing the steam injection rate appears to be a very important consideration. (Movement of liquids away from the injection well should increase injectivity.) Fortunately, the solution presented by the authors may be generalized to thc case of a variable heat injection rate. The general solution is:

The St. Lawrence Seaway and power project has received the support of the Canadian Parliament, with the House of Commons approving a bill that authorizes the Government to proceed with construction of the seaway, with or without U. S. cooperation. Itogan Mining Co., third largest gold mine in the Philippines, reopened in December under the management of Marsman and. Co. The 'mine was almost totally destroyed during the occupation. The International Materials Conference committee on copper, lead, and zinc has recommended against stockpiling during the: first quarter of 1952 because of the current demands for defense needs. The General Services Administration has told producers who have contracts calling for delivery of copper to the stockpile during the first quarter of 1952 that they do not need to make those deliveries.

The primary use of a portable crusher, i.e., a crusher mounted on crawlers or tires, in the rock and mining industries is to reduce costs by permitting the substitution of conveyor belt haulage for truck or track haulage. The usual sequence of operations in surface mining is drilling, blasting, loading, haulage, and crushing. Haulage is normally accomplished by truck or track-mounted cars, the latter method being used for the longer distances. However, by using a portable crusher in the pit, the sequence of operations would be changed so that the crushing stage would occur before haulage (Fig. 1). Such a sequence would permit the use of conveyors to replace the more expensive truck or track haulage methods. Since most quarry and open pit operations normally require a crushing stage, the only additional costs incurred will be due to the investment required to purchase or construct a mobile arrangement for a crusher. But this factor has to be weighed against the advantages to be gained by conveyor haulage. As shown in Fig. 2, transportation of material by belt conveyor over short distances is less ex- pensive than by truck. The inclination of the belt has no effect on belt speed; consequently, the hourly tonnage moved remains the same. Conversely, the output rate of trucks as expressed in tons or ton- miles per shift decreases proportionally to the haulage speed, which is considerably slowed by the steepness of the road (Fig. 3a). Although maximum possible grades and maximum economic grades of haulage are greater for a belt than for a truck (over the same total lift), the longer haulage distances favor the use of trucks.

A LITERATURE survey of the In-Sb system, which was made before a study of the binary diagram was undertaken, revealed that the intermediate phase InSb existed and that its crystal structure is face-centered cubic of the zinc blend type. In 1929 Goldschmidt' determined the lattice constant for InSb and obtained a value of 6.452A. A more recent value, 6.461A was reported by Iandelli2 in 1941. The purity of the indium used was not very high, however. The indium used by Iandelli contained 2 pct Ge. In view of this fact it was decided to remeasure the lattice parameter using high-purity indium (99.97+ pct In) and spectrographically standardized antimony of the highest purity available (99.91 pct Sb). Specimens corresponding to the InSb composition were made by carefully weighing the ingredients on an analytical balance and heating them in vacuo in a quartz tube at 700°C. As melting losses were negligible, the alloys were not analyzed chemically, but the intended analysis was taken as being accu- rate. Powder samples were prepared by either filing or crushing of the brittle alloy, followed by screening at 325 mesh. The powders were then annealed at 400°C in evacuated capsules for about an hour. X-ray photograms were taken with a Debye and a back-reflection focusing camera, using characteristic cobalt K. radiation. Lattice parameters were calculated by Cohen's³ method. The results of a Debye pattern and of a back-reflection pattern at 25°C are given in Tables I and 11. The lattice parameter at 25 °C is 6.47602A.

The pressure of the gas in equilibrium with sphalerite has been determined in the temperature range of 680' to 825°C, using the Knudsen orifice method. A comparison of these experimental pressures with those calculated from thermal data and from other equilibrium measurements shows that the vapor above sphalerite is predominantly dissociated ZnS. Equations have been given for correctly calculating dissociation pressures using the Knudsen orifice method. It has been shown that the experimentally determined pressure is the same, whether the zinc sulphide is sphalerite or not, or a mixture of wurtzite and sphalerite. CONFLICTING points of view appear in the literature on the constitution of the vapor in equilibrium with solid zinc sulphide in the vicinity of 800°C. By comparing the dissociation pressure calculated from thermodynamic data and the vapor-pressure determination of ZnS by Veselovski,1 Lumsden2 has concluded that the vapor consists largely of dissociated ZnS. Sen Gupta,' however, concludes from his spectroscopic determinations that the vapor is largely ZnS molecules. In view of the fact that the thermodynamically calculated' dissociation pressure is higher than that experimentally measured by Veselovski, it seemed in order to repeat Veselovski's measurements. Experimental Procedure The method used for the determination of the pressures in this papel- is the Knudsen effusion cell. The apparatus and procedure were described in a previous paper- from this laboratory on the determination of the vapor pressure of silver. The only difference is that the Knudsen cell in this work is made from platinum and there is no external cover around the cell. The cell is an ordinary platinum crucible of 2.2 cm top diameter with a capsule cover. It was thought that platinum might stand up at these temperatures to the solid and gaseous ZnS, since it was found that the weight of the platinum cell itself did not change appreciably on heating ZnS in it at the working temperatures. To insure that reaction of the zinc sulphide with the cell was not giving' a false value, a stabilized zirconia cell was employed for check runs. Fig. 1 shows the comparison, which is satisfactory. Veselovski previously had measured the vapor pressure of ZnS using a silica Knudsen effusion cell. On repeating his experiment in this laboratory, it was found that ZnS at-tacked the silica cell, giving it a marked frosty appearance. This led to the belief that Veselovski's result:; may be in error. Also, he was operating at pressures above the range ordinarily considered safe for the Knudsen method. The effusion rate was measured by weighing the cell before and after each run. The weight loss during heating to temperature and cooling down was measured and subtracted from the weight loss during the actual run. The zinc sulphide used in this investigation was from two sources: Fisher cp grade, and a sample of pure sphalerite supplied by Mr. E. A. Anderson of the New Jersey Zinc Co. Before and after the series of runs with Fisher ZnS, X-ray analysis showed that both wurtzite and sphalerite were present. However, the ratio of sphalerite to wurtzite increased. All measurements were made below the transition temperature which has been reported" to be 1020°C. The data obtained in this investigation are tabulated in Table I. The pressure was calculated by the usual Knudsen formula" on the assumption that ZnS molecules were effusing. From these data, using pure sphalerite in the platinum Knudsen cell, the vapor pressure of ZnS, in mm of Hg, as a function of temperature is given by the solid line in Fig. 1. The best straight line, as determined by the method of least squares, is given by 14405 logpzns =-14405/T +11.032. A comparison of these results with Veselovski's shows that his results are about 50 pct lower. Discussion The vapor in equilibrium with solid zinc sulphide in the temperature range of this study will consist of Zn, S2, and ZnS mol, since other species of zinc and sulphur' are relatively unstable. The question to be settled is whether or not ZnS is largely dissociated. The derivation8 which follows gives the method of calculating the pressure of zinc and sulphur over solid ZnS, assuming complete dissociation, from Knudsen cell data. ABOUT the beginning of 1930, coal preparation had reached the stage where the cleaning of coal by liquid or air had become the order of the day. Since that time many new preparation plants have been installed in spite of the years of depression in the coal industry, and this is indicative of a trend wherein the coal producer found it expedient to manufacture a cleaner product in order to compete with other fuels. It was also about 1930 that, because of the difficulties encountered with fine coal in cleaning plants, dust collectors came into use. Both cleaning plants and dust collectors, therefore, were much discussed at the engineering meetings of the early 1930's. During these meetings the many advantages to be gained through the use of dust-collecting systems were pointed out by Hebley,1 Appleyard2 and others. The great possibilities of new markets for this product were emphasized and discussed at the same time; however, the disposal of the collected dust remained a problem. Since the purpose of dust collecting is to improve the preparation and, consequently, the salability of the coal, it seems illogical to return the collected dust to any of the coal being prepared for market use, as is done in preparation plants that include dust-collecting systems. The logical thing is to dispose of the dust in some useful and practical manner outside of the tipple. As a practical matter, this can be done in one or both of two ways; either by consuming the dust at the mine's own power plant or by marketing the dust direct to the consumer. The latter method not only offers the greatest opportunities, but is the most important, because of inequalities that may exist between the quantity of dust collected and the consuming capacity of the mine's power plant. In considering the more important marketing possibilities, we are confronted immediately with the problems connected with the handling and transportation of so fine a material. It is this problem, rather than the problem of finding new markets, that has been responsible for the lack of progress in the matter of dust disposal. It is the purpose of this paper to point out again some of the potential market outlets, and also to describe an existing system of handling and transporting coal dust. To the best of the writer's knowledge, this is the first and only operation in this country that has handled fine-mesh coal in bulk 50-ton lots direct to the consumer. POtential Markets for Fine-mesh Coal Dust In general, the potential market outlets would include any operation of which the pulverization of coal is a necessary part. To be more specific, a few of the better known operations of this type must include: colloidal-fuel plants, briquetting plants, "sea coal" distributing plants, water-purification plants and, obviously, pow-
