Discussion of the paper of JAMES F. KEMP, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 105, September, 1915, pp. 1801 to 1836. WALLACE E. PRATT, Manila, P. I.-I am glad that Professor hemp has referred to the Philippine ores in his paper, inasmuch as I have had the privilege of examining, in a preliminary way, the ores there. I must say, from the resume given us, that the Daiquiri ores seem to be similar in origin and character to the magnetite-hematite ores in Bulacan Province, Philippines. Professor Kemp has also referred to C. M. Weld's description of the magnetite-hematite ores at Hongkong and to the similarity of these ores to the ores at Daiquiri and to those in Bulacan. There is a minor feature of apparent difference in origin in the Hongkong and Bulacan ores. Mr. Weld believes the iron ores at Hongkong to have resulted from the intrusion of the Hongkong granite, a distinctive rock of wide distribution in the Orient, into sedimentaries which are probably of much greater age than those which have been replaced in part by the ores in Bulacan. Associated with some of the ores in Bulacan and elsewhere in the Philippines there is a granite which may be the equivalent of the Hongkong granite; but the Bulacan ores are not related in origin to the intrusion of this granite, which is clearly older than the ores, but to the later intrusion of dikes and small bodies of basic rocks into the granite and into associated tuffs, breccias, and sedimentaries, including limestone. I gather that the intrusives to which the mineralization is related at Daiquiri are also small in volume and later than larger bodies of associated igneous rocks, from which it would appear that the Bulacan ores are even more closely related to the Daiquiri type than are the Hongkong ores. The deposits in Bulacan are inaccessible and are not large, the largest one containing about 1,000,000 tons, according to an estimate based solely on its outcrop dimensions. Ores of similar character, however, occur in Camarines Province in apparently larger quantity and in a situation on the coast adjacent to deep water.

The permeability of hydrogen through the a phase of palladium has been measured by a low pressure permeation technique under conditions such that bulk diffusion was the rate-controlling process. The observed permeability is described by the equation: J = 1.80 x 1O-3 P½exp(-3745)/RT) cc(stp)/sec/cm2/en over a range of hydrogen pressure, P, from 2.9 x 10-5 m Hg to 5.0 x 10-3 cm Hg, and over a temperature range, T, from 300" to 709°K. The fact that the permeability shows a square root dependence on pressure and a reciprocal dependence on thickness was taken as evidence that bulk diffusion, rather than surface reactions, was the rate-controlling process. The permeability data were used in conjunction with the solubility data of Salmon et al., to determine the diffusivity of hydrogen through palludium as: D = 4.94 x 10-3 exp(-5745/RT) cm2/sec There was no influence of sub structural defects observed over the temperature range employed. From the permeability data obtained, coupled with grain size measurements, it was concluded that the ratio of grain boundary diffusivity to bulk diffusivity was less than 105 over the range of temperature investigated. THE diffusive mass transport of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium has been studied previously by numerous investigators.' In spite of the large amount of attention this system has received, there is not good agreement between the results obtained in different investigations.' This is due in part to the fact that the mass transport was surface-limited during some of these studies, rather than being diffusion-controlled3-5 The reason for the disagreement in other cases is not clear. These studies made use of such techniques as rate of absorption from solutions6 and gases,' electrochemical potential,8 time lag,' and permeation10,11 to determine the mass transport behavior. Of these, the gas permeability technique is the only method which allows an easy test to determine if diffusion is the rate-controlling mechanism, thus eliminating the uncertainty regarding the limiting transport processes inherent in the other techniques. The two most recent permeability studies are those of Toda10 and Davis." Toda determined the permeability of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium over the temperature range from 170" to 290°C, and over the pressure range from 36 to 630 mm Hg utilizing a steady-state gas-permeability technique. Toda's result was: J = 1.41 x 10-3 P½ exp(-3220/RT) where J = specific permeability in cc(stp)/sec/cm2/cm, P½ = square root of the inlet pressure in (cm Hg)½, R = Universal gas constant, and T = temperature in deg Kelvin. Davis11 also employed a steady-state gas-permeability technique over the temperature range from 200" to 700°C and over the pressure range from 0.02 to 760 mm Hg. His result for the permeability of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium was: J = 3.15 x 10-3 P½ exp(-A440/RT) In the range of overlapping temperature for these two investigations, the values of the specific permeability calculated from the above two equations differ by a factor of about 1.8. In the present investigation, the permeation of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium was determined over a wide temperature range, 27" to 436oC, and over the pressure range from 2.9 x 10-5 to 5.0 x 10-3 cm Hg. This temperature range overlaps that of the previous investigations of Toda and Davis, but also covers the lower temperature range which has never before been investigated. The lower pressure range used here avoided the interaction between the dissolved hydrogen atoms observed at higher hydrogen concentrations.' MATERIALS The as-received palladium specimens were cold rolled from a casting and were supplied as 5.08 cm discs of 0.508 and 0.762 mm thickness. According to J. Bishop and Company specifications, the composition of the discs was 99.95 pct Pd, the balance being Cu, Ag, Au, and Ir. In order to obtain samples of varying grain size, the as-received discs were then heat treated. Sample 1 was treated for eight minutes in a nitrogen atmosphere at 810°C and then air-cooled. Sample D was heated first to 550°C in helium. The helium atmosphere was then immediately replaced by hydrogen and the temperature was slowly raised to 1220°C and held for 22 hr. The sample was then cooled to 550°C where the hydrogen was replaced by helium and the disc was further furnace-cooled to room temperature. Sample H was given the same heat treatment, only with hydrogen substituted for helium below 550°C. The reason that hydrogen was not used throughout the entire annealing cycle for samples D and H was to prevent the distortion encountered by low-temperature cycling in hydrogen observed by Darling." The sudden and untimely death of Dr. Charles R. Van Hise, late' president of the University of Wisconsin, was one of the greatest losses, not only to the educational world and science of geology, for which he was a great leader and pathfinder, but also to the world of mining and allied interests, for which he was an adviser and helper who blazed trails and pointed out paths of development, which the practical men of englneering and industry will follow long after his death. To the general public, Dr. Van Hise stood as a great educator who conceived and wrought out a new idea in the people's university .of .a commonwealth and as a great active mind that could not be held within the bounds of education and science but, by its own bigness and broadness, was forced into the contemplation of the larger affairs of the nation. To the engineering profession, dr. Van Hise will be remembered as a tireless worker who solved some of the most complex problems in geolpgy and the development of mineral resources and recorded these findings In a form that is of lasting value to those who follow him in similar labor. In this combination of thinker and worker, educator and economic student, scientist and practical engineer, lies Dr. Van Hise's contribution to his generation. As an educator, Dr. Van Hise attained perhaps his widest recognition, for in the University of which he was president he evolved and accomplished a new idea, which caused it to be called, in 1908, by President Eliot of Harvard, "the leading State University." At the time of his death, Nov. 19, 1918, he was just completing fourteen years as president and forty-three years as student and teacher in the University. His entire life of 61 years had been devoted to his State and its University. He was the first alumnus of the University and the first Wisconsin-born citizen to become its president—and he enjoyed the longest term as president of the institution. Since his graduation from its College of Engineering in 1879, he had been constantly a member of its faculty. As Chief Justice John B. Winslow, of the Wisconsin Supreme Court said at the time of President Van Hise's death, " Wisconsin has had many able sons, men who have served their Country and their State with ais-tinguished honor in various fields of effort, but among them all none, I believe, has rendered greater service in his time than President Van Hise. The University will be his true monument, for to him, more than to any one person, we owe the present commanding position of that, great Institution." What his "new ideal of a State University" was maybe best expressed in the words which he used to outline it in his inaugural address in 1904. "I shall never be content until the beneficent influence of the University of Wisconsin reaches every family of the State. This is my ideal of a State University. When the University of Wisconsin attains this ideal, it will be the first perfect State University.... The University of Wisconsin desires to prevent that greatest of all economic losses to the State, the loss of talent. To prevent this loss of talent, the University must not only provide for those who come to Madison for instruction, but must go out to the people of the State with the knowledge which they desire and need." Hence it was said early in his administration that "the boundaries of the State are the campus fence."

Internal friction measurements from 25° to 1100°C have been made on specimens machined from TD nickel bar. The use of miniature torsional pendulum specimens alloived damping measurements to be made on specimens whose axes were parallel to the original bar axis, at 45 deg to the bar axis, and at 90 deg to the bar axis. There was a marked difference in damping with varying specimen orientation, and this was related to the pronounced micro structural anisotropy of this material. Varying the microstructure by cold working plus re crystallization annealing also greatly affected the damping behavior. Recrystallization essentially removed the broad peak found at 400° to 650°C in as-received TD nickel, and in addition greatly lowered the background damping. DlSPERSION hardened metals such as SAP-type alloys (Al + AI2O3) and TD nickel (Ni + 2 pet ThO2) have been developed primarily to improve high temperature strength properties. There have been numerous damping studies on SAP-type alloys,1"9 and one of these6 showed that the damping capacity was greater than that of 99.5 pet pure Al from 25° to 600°C. Several preliminary observations on TD nickel10 and an experimental Ni-ThO2 alloy11 indicated that here, too, the damping capacity was quite high. A high damping capacity in TD nickel, combined with its relatively good high temperature creep strength, could provide an additional benefit for some high temperature structural applications. This work was undertaken to study the internal friction behavior of TD nickel bar over the temperature range 25° to 1100°C. In Ni-ThO2 and Ni-Cr-ThOz alloys, other properties such as steady-state creep rate,12 creep rupture life,12'13 modulus of elasticity,14 and ultimate tensile strength,14 are sensitive to orientation with respect to the primary working direction. Thus, in order to examine anisotropy effects in damping, studies were made on specimens machined with their axes parallel, at 45 deg, and transverse to the original bar axis. MATERIAL DESCRIPTION AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The material used in this investigation was from the same £ in. diam TD nickel bar that has been studied previously.13'15 The structure typical of the as-received TD nickel is shown in Fig. 1, and additional details of the structure can be found in Refs. 13 and 15. Elongated grains are parallel to the bar axis and are about 10 to 15 u long and about 1 u in diam. This structure is very stable, since no recrys-tallization or grain growth occurred after annealing for 3 hr at 1300°C.13 The total ThO2 content was 2.3 vol pct and the particles ranged in diameter from 100 to 1000. The average particle diameter was 370Å and the mean planar center-to-center particle spacing was 2340Å. To examine the influence of grain and subgrain structure on damping, a section of TD nickel bar was swaged and drawn at room temperature from 1/2 in. diam bar to 0.040 in. diam wire (99.3 pct re-duction in area). The structure in Fig. 2 resulted after the wire was annealed for 3 hr at 1250°C. GruZLESKI and winegard1 have recently reported on the origin and development of the cellular substructure in Sn-Cd eutectic unidirectionally grown with different amounts of constitutional supercooling (CS). This communication deals with the results obtained in a parallel study on the instability of a plane interface in Al-Cu eutectic unidirectionally grown. Similarities as well as differences with the results of these authors1 will be presented. A1-Cu eutectic alloy ingots of 99.999 pct purity were grown unidirectionally under different G/R ratios where G = thermal gradient in the liquid, R = solidification rate. The ingots were cut in slices perpendicular to the solidification axes and the substructure studied on parallel sections following the sense of growth. It was generally found that the last part of the ingot to solidify presented a well developed colony substructure as a result of impurity build up and constitutional supercooling. The results obtained were: 1) When the structure was observed with low niagnification (of the order of 150 to 300 times) the first instabilities were observed at the grain boundaries and node-like structures formed at the junctions of the growth-induced boundaries, as reported by Gruz-leski and Winegard.1 Inside the grains the first signs of instability appear later and correspond to the type shown in Fig. 1; this is a two dimensional cell substructure. ' 2) Figs. 2 and 3 correspond to the evolution from a two dimensional substructure to a cellular type. In the A1-Cu eutectic the boundaries of the two dimensional cell are always perpendicular to the laniellaes instead of parallel as in the Sn-Cd eutectic. 1

ANY metal which contains even a small percentage of aluminum possesses certain peculiarities of appearance and properties which are exhibited both when the metal is melted and after it solidifies. Pure aluminum, or an alloy containing a small proportion of aluminum, can be melted without flux-except for a layer of charcoal-because a film of aluminum oxide and metal forms at the surface of melted aluminum. Although very thin, this film is air-proof, and it prevents the metal underneath from oxidizing. This oxidized film does not move easily on account of its toughness and high surface tension. One very important point in connection with this process of still casting has not been strongly enough stressed, namely, that the same kind of surface film with the same peculiarities forms over the surface of all melted alloys that contain even a small proportion of aluminum. Experienced foundrymen know how desirable it is to cast aluminum under its "skin" or under the surface of the film which tends to remain still. In the case of red copper, when in fusion, the surface shows pure copper only. This' is due to the fact that liquid copper constantly absorbs the copper oxide which forms on the surface. By closely examining melting copper the oxide can be seen dissolving in the bath, and going into solution just as pulverized sugar dissolves in water. When copper is cast in the open, either in wire bars or cakes, the surface of metal exposed to the air is covered by a film of black oxide that cannot be absorbed by the metal.

A standard set of coal mining laws for the entire United States is hardly practicsble, yet the numerous variations in the state laws for almost every item seems entirely unnecessary. The same useless variations appear in almost every comparable section with no apparent reason except that no attempt has ever been made to codify them, and as they were developed over a long period of time by innumerable individuals and legislatures, the present situation is the logical outcome of lack of cooperation between states. The ventilation of a mine is affected indirectly by many provisions not listed specifically under this heading, so that it would be necessary to tabulate the major portion of all the laws to secure a complete comparable digest; therefore only a few of the more important have been set down here. This point is well illustrated in the section providing for clearance between car and rib, which is intended as a safety measure against personal injury, but is very important from the standpoint of ventilation because of choked airways in mines on two-entry system. Confusing Phraseology Misinterpretation and confusion may be expected from the phraseology alone; one state provides that the scale of the mine map shall be "not more than 100 ft. to 1 in.;'' another state demands "not less than 100 ft. to 1 in." Both probably mean the same thing and seek to prevent the operator from furnishing a map on which the workings will appear SO small that the detail is illegible. Legislation is certainly indefinite that specifies structures must be fireproof when "near" a mine opening, and just what is a "dusty" or "gaseous" mine is open to argument in most of the states. The variation in spacing crosscuts and break-throughs and the limited number of men on a split seem entirely unnecessary, as the distance is not reduced in gaseous fields, excepting in Arkansas and Tennessee, which states produce a comparatively small amount of coal, and the number of men differs 100 per cent. and more for no apparent reason.

The Altar district, State of Sonora, Mexico, is for the most part a desert with but little rain-fall and few running streams. On account of this scarcity of water it is necessary for the natives to " dry-wash" the placer-gravel, and the object of the present gaper is to describe some of the more commoil Mexican dry-mashing devices. My observations were confined to a property known as Las Palomas placers, 15 miles from the Gulf of California and about 150 miles south of the United States border; a brief description of which property may be of interest as illustrating what is, perhaps, a typical Sonora dry placer. It is said that as long as a century ago the Yaqui Indians discovered rich cement-gravel, known as argo masa, at Las Palomas, and that there has been a more or less steady production of gold from the property ever since. The argo masa, is a fairly-coarse gravel, the pebbles being quite firmly held together with a lime cement. Gold is scattered through this cement in particles ranging from fine specks to pieces several grams in weight, and occasional large nuggets are encountered. The contents vary so widely that it is difficult to estimate the average value, but returns of from $10 to $50 per cubic yard are common, and it is doubtful if the Indians considered anything less than from $4 to $5 a yard as "pay dirt.'' This ar-90 masa, occurs in channels varying in thickness from a few inches to several feet, and in width up to 300 ft. These channels are continuous and are probably ancient stream-beds. They are for the most part covered with an over-burden of a more recent gravel, varying from 30 to 50 ft. thick, and the fact that this over-burden contains values as high as $1.50 per cubic yard, and yet was not worked by the Indians, shows that their idea of what constituted mas high.

The electrolytic formation of y hydride in thin foils of Ti-5Al-Z.5Sn alloy and four Ti-A1 binary alloys has been studied by electron microscopy and electron diffraction. Two orientation relationships have been found: THE adsorption of hydrogen by titanium alloys from aqueous solutions has been widely reported. This can occur, for example, in both alkaline' and acidic2 pickling baths, in chemical polishing374 and electro-polishing Solutions,3,4 during cathodic polarization5" and under certain corrosion conditions,7,8 Etching reagents may also produce visible precipitates, sometimes after an aging period.9 During an investigation into the stress corrosion susceptibility of a titanium alloys by thin foil electron microscopy many observations have been made of hydride precipitation which has been deliberately promoted by techniques that are described below. The characteristics of hydride precipitation are reported and the observed crystallographic orientation relationships are discussed with reference to distortion in the titanium lattice created by the presence of the hydride. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE One grade of commercial titanium and five alloys were examined. Their composition and hardness values are shown in Table I. All the materials were in the form of thin sheet, 0.05 to 0.065 cm thick, which had been annealed after cold rolling. Foils suitable for transmission electron microscopy were made in two ways: a) by chemical polishing; and b) by elec-tropolishing. The solution used for chemical polishing was a mixture of 44 pct HF and 73 pct HNO3 in the volumetric ratio 2:3. During this polishing specimens were manually moved up and down in the solution. The reaction was veFy rapid, specimens thinning to foil thickness (2000A) in 5 min. Since chemical polishing solutions tend not to cause hydride contamination if they are kept cool3 no attempt was made to prevent the solution from becoming hot during the thinning operation. Electropolishing was performed at -30° C with a mixture3 composed of 295 cu cm methyl alcohol, 175 cu cm n-butyl alcohol, and 30 cu cm perchloric acid with an applied voltage of 40 v after chemically thinning specimens to approximately 0.017 cm thickness in a cool solution of 44 pct HF, 40 vol H2O2, and water in the volumetric ratio 1:6:3. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 1) Ti-5A1-2.5Sn Alloy. The Ti-5A1-2.5Sn alloy was severely contaminated by hydrogen during the chemical polishing. Foils obtained in this way contained large amounts of the y hydride phase. A typical micrograph is shown in Fig. l. The laths were identified as the hydride phase by selected-area diffraction of a large number of foils examined in a tilting stage that could be turned through 40 deg. Using the lattice spac-ings of the alloy obtained by X-ray diffraction as a standard the a value of the hydride was determined fromo the electron diffraction patterns to be 4.38 to 4.40A. The accuracy of this figure is only about ±2 pct. Further evidence of the identification was obtained by vacuum annealing chemically polished foils of the alloy at 500°C. This resulted in the dissociation of the hydride with the production of dislocations and possibly vacancy loops as shown in Fig. 2. The hydride

WILLIS,* Bisbee, Ariz.-(written discussion?).-The consensus of the discussion of the paper of Dr. Lanza indicates that the physical examination, while it is probably a good thing, is fought by the workingman, and that, because of this fact, it has been proved unsuccessful. The physical examination standing alone is worth but little, and could easily be made a subject both of ridicule and dissension unless the company having such examination shows its own good faith in promoting a thoroughly better health program. It is easily seen why a workman would resent his employer expecting him to be physically fit, if at the same time the employer provides un-healthful, unsanitary, working conditions, or if the town in which the employees are expected to live is dirty and unkempt. One mocks the other. The employer cannot say, "You must remain healthy so that I can get by with unhealthy conditions." But if working- conditions are as good as can be obtained to keep men well, the employer can ask his men to be in a healthy condition. A State examination and standard would have many difficulties, owing to the fact that a man would pass or would not pass the standard set, thus eliminating the discretion on the part of the employer in placing men whose physical condition might well permit working in one place and not another. Any physical examination that is run for the purpose of eliminating the physically unfit is unjust, both to the worker and to the nation as a whole; a State examination would make a distinct dividing line, whereas examination by the employer is conducted with a vision of the positions available. The workman's opposition to the physical examination comes from the fact that he has been taught to believe that it is an interference in his personal affairs, that he can be clean or dirty as he chooses, that he can he healthy or unhealthy, and that it is nobody's business but his own. The war has taught us, however, that the individual is no longer the unit and that all such propositions must be based on the greatest good for the greatest number.

Allotropic transformations in cerium have been studied by dilatometric, resistometric, X-ray diffraction, and metallographic techniques. The dilatometric study indicated that, on cooling below O°C, the high-temperature fcc phase, y, transforms partly to the hexagonal phase, ß, and, on further cooling, to the collapsed fcc phase, a. The amount of $ phase present at room temperature is increased by repeated cycling through the a-y transformation. It has been shown metallograPhically that the y-ß transformation has many characteristics of a martensitic transformation. In contrast to the y-ß transformation the ?-a transformation does not give the manifestation of a shear transformation. Small cellular ? domains of random shape and size collapse to a in a short time with no apparent coordination with neighboring domains. The considerable confusion in the literature over the existence of more than one high-temperature fcc phase is discussed. Two such phases have been reported in the literature and an attempt is made in this study to clarify the situation. Twelve fcc and two hcp structures have been shown to be easily reproduced or eliminated. It is proposed that the two "additional" allotropes reported in the literature and fourteen of the phases detected here are not allotropes of cerium but are due to contamination. CERIUM exists in several allotropic forms, but there is some disagreement over what the forms are. Furthermore, the conditions favoring the presence of a particular allotrope and the nature of the transformations from one form to another are uncertain. The objectives of this research were 1) to ascertain the allotropic forms of cerium, 2) to establish the conditions under which the allotropes exist, 3) to study the effects of annealing and thermal cycling on the allotropic transformations, and 4) to study the transformation mechanisms. Dilatometric, resistometric, metallographic, and X-ray diffraction techniques were employed. The form of cerium commonly found at room temperature is fcc and is designated ?. A complex hexagonal phase, 8, forms when y is cooled to slightly below room temperature. At still lower temperatures the y fcc structure transforms to an fcc form with a much smaller lattice parameter, termed a cerium. A bcc form, 6, which exists just below the melting point (800°C), will not be considered further in this work. There is a substantial body of experimental evidence (reviewed by Gschneidnerl) which favors the acceptance of these four allotropes, though some investigators have tried unsuccessfully to observe the ß hexagonal form.'-' There is disagreement, however, over the phase-transformation temperatures, due, in part, to broad hysteresis and overlapping of the transformations between the a, ß, and ? forms. The transformations are also sensitive to prior thermal and mechanical treatment. The differing purity of cerium used by different investigators is undoubtedly a factor. Cerium is difficult to separate from other elements and is quite reactive, igniting spontaneously when it is filed in air. The highest purity of cerium to date is reported to contain several hundred parts per million by weight of impurities, and early investigations were carried out on cerium containing several percent of impurities. There have been reports of more than one fcc allotrope at room temperature. Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald5 obtained diffraction patterns of an fcc phase with a lattice parameter about 1 pct less than that of the ? phase, instead of the y phase, on slowly cooling cerium filings from 23° to -198°C and warming them back to room temperature. However, when the sample was heated to 447°C and cooled to room temperature it consisted of only the ? phase. They have designated this new fcc phase "a-? intermediate", and say it is quite sensitive to impurities. After prolonged high-temperature treatment of a powder specimen, Weiner and Raynor2 obtained a diffraction pattern of an fcc phase of lattice parameter about 1 pct less than the ? phase. This they called the y' phase. It could not be reconverted to the y phase and is claimed to be different from the a-? intermediate phase.5,6 Dialer and Rothe3 reported two fcc phases* after cycling their powder specimens between room temperature and -192°C. Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald5 suggested that one of the fcc structures obtained by Dialer and Rothe was equivalent to their "a-? intermediate" phase. VARNES,* Steelton, Pa.:-We have a gas-cleaning plant consisting of a, centrifugal dry dust catcher, and two rain-type wet scrubbing towers, 25 by 60 ft. each, for rough cleaning of blast-furnace gas. This plant was put in early in 1910, with the intention of cleaning gas for use in hot blast stoves and under boilers, and was so used for several months. Soon after it went into service, the blast-furnace men complained that they could not get as high blast temperatures as they had obtained when using dirty gas. It was decided to run a series of careful tests to determine if this were true and to what degree the apparent results might be affected by other conditions. About 60 tests were run, covering a period of five months, and at the end we came to the conclusion that it did not pay us to scrub the gas for stoves and boilers. The tests were all run upon a single stove, no boiler tests being made, but the conclusions of the stove tests being applied to the boilers. THE Grossmann principle1 for the calculation of hardenability of steel from composition is attractive because of its simplicity. It postulates that the hardenability of a steel for any particular grain size may be expressed in terms of an ideal critical diameter, which is the product of an ideal critical diameter for a "pure" iron-carbon base multiplied by a succession of factors for each element of composition contained, including the incidentals. It infers that the multiplying factor for a given quantity of an element is constant for all combinations of composition. Grossmann has stated that in the great majority of cases the experimental values of hardenability are found to be well within 10 per cent of the calculated values. The validity of the scheme has been confirmed in principle by Crafts and Lamont2,3 and by Kramer et al .4 Their results differ from the original in the magnitude of the effect of some elements but, since they accepted the product concept and followed its direction, it is to be expected that similar results would be obtained. Crafts and Lamont, in their second paper, recognized that the factor relations for manganese and nickel were not continuously linear, but beyond certain critical amounts increase sharply. Austin, Van Note and Prater5 demonstrated nonlinear relations between hardenability and alloy contents. Their curves for chromium, silicon, manganese and nickel were all convex upward to show decreasing incremental effects. They concluded that Grossmann's factors underevaluate the hardening effect of low percentage additions of these elements, and overevaluate the larger additions. [ ] More recently W. Steven6 has found that the factor method fails when applied to complex steels containing two or three principal alloying elements other than carbon. Multiplying factors derived from his results bear a complex relation to composition and are not constant for a given amount of an element as the base composition varies. C. A. qualitative picture has been developed to describe the oxidation behavior of TaSi2-coated tantalum and CbSi2-coated columbium. These systems have a significantly lower inherent oxidation resistance than MoSi2-coated molybdenum does. This stems primarily from the fact that Ta2O5 and Cb2O5 are nearly as stable thermodynamically as SiO2, whereas MoO2 or Moos are not. Further, diffusion of silicon in the Ta- and Cb-Si system is considerably slower than in the Mo-Si system. These ,factors prohibit the mechanism of selective oxidation of- silicon which accounts for the oxidation resistance 01- MoSi2-coated molybdenum. The silicide can be stabilized by adding suitable Modifiers which increase the thermodynamic stability of the silicate formed during oxidation. Modifiers, such as aluminum, can be inroduced into solid solution in the coating. in controlled amounts through proper selection of the source in the pack cementation process of coating fov~rzatiorz. Addition of aluminum to TaSi2, coatings on tantalum was effective in moderately increasing the oxidation resistance. EXTENSIVE experimental work and analysis have established the nature of the oxidation behavior exhibited by MoSi2- and MoSi2 -coated molybdenum-base alloys, and defined the conditions for maximum protection against oxidation of the substrate.'-* The oxidation resistance of MoSi2 in the temperature-pressure range of 1100°C-PO2 > 10-5 atm to 1900°C— PO2 > 10-1 atm is due to the formation at the surface of a continuous film of SiO2 which results from selective oxidation of silicon. Under the prevailing kinetic conditions, this film is stable toward the molybdenum silicide with which it comes in contact. Initially molybdenum oxidizes also, but it forms volatile species. SiO2, however, nucleates and grows as a condensed phase. Once a continuous film of SiO2 has formed, the oxidation rate falls to that observed for the oxidation of pure silicon indicative of diffusion through the oxide film as the rate-controlling mechanism. This oxidation behavior is of course highly dependent upon temperature and oxygen pressure. Bartlett and Gage13 and Bartlett, McCamont, and Gagelb define precisely this dependence in terms of the oxygen partial pressures and silicon diffusivities required to support a stable SiO2 film. At low temperatures (near 500°C—the "pest" region) silicon diffuses too slowly to be selectively oxidized. Hence, molybdenum and silicon oxidize readily in proportion to their stoi- chiometry. At high temperatures and low pressure, SiOz dissociates to form volatile SiO(g), and a protective film cannot be maintained. Application of the MoSiz/Mo system is limited to temperatures below 1900oC, the eutectic between MoSi, and MO5Si3.5 The oxidation behavior of MoSi2-coated molybdenum is essentially the same as that outlined above with the exception that the MoSi2 is not in equilibrium with the molybdenum substrate. At the temperatures under consideration silicon will diffuse rapidly into the molybdenum eventually converting the coating to MosSi3.4 The rate constant for subsequent decomposition of Mo5Si3 into Mo3Si plus silicon, and/or the diffusivity of silicon through Mo3Si then becomes low enough to allow active oxidation of both molybdenum and silicon with subsequent degradation of the specimen. A stable silica film can be formed but at temperatures and/or oxygen partial pressures higher than those required with MoSi2 present as a source of si1icon.l, 4 Because of the similarity between the silicides of molybdenum and those of columbium and tantalum one would expect similar oxidation behavior for coatings in the respective systems. This is not entirely the case, however, as shown by the experimental results reported herein. Regarding tantalum and columbium disilicide coatings on tantalum and columbium substrates, respectively, the oxygen arriving at the surface of the coating partitions itself nearly equally between the metal and the silicon, and a two-phase oxide layer (Me2O5 plus SiO2) is always formed. The diffusion of silicon in the tantalum and columbium silicides is relatively slow, compared to that in the molybdenum silicides, which further enhances this equipartitioning of oxygen. Thickening of the coating during service by inward diffusion of silicon into the substrate is correspondingly slow, and the effective thickness of the coating at the roots of cracks and defects is only slightly changed providing high probability for premature coating failure. Furthermore, the SiO2 glass that is generated is not thermodynamically stable with respect to the coating. The metal silicide tends to reduce the SiO2 liberating either free silicon or SiO. The situation can be improved by suitably modifying the coating such that the stability of the protective glass which is generated during service is increased. Thus, selective oxidation of silicon and the modifying agent will occur, and the silicide coating will not tend to reduce the oxide layer. Modifying agents can be introduced into the coating by the pack cementation process. Using sources containing the modifier at controlled chemical potentials allows control of the coating composition. Partially substituting aluminum for silicon in TaSi2 coatings by forming a Ta(Si,Al)2 solid solution was effective in moderately increasing the oxidation protection.

THE metallurgical polarization microscope has been utilized in several researches in the last few years, thus attaining a fair degree of prominence, but little has been written in a manner suitable to a metallurgist concern-ing the theory of this instrument. In this investigation the theory was carefully studied, and the results are presented here in a detailed manner, yet as simply as possible. The theory is discussed with particular reference to the three chief functions of the instrument: (1) determination of anisotropy; (2) effect of strain; and (3) identification of inclusions. Each of these is investigated experimentally, with especial attention to the mechanism of producing any effect. Where possible, the discussion is supplemented by photomicrographs. The instrument used had numerous defects as a polarization microscope; these and their remedies are discussed. In the microscopic study of transparent mineral sections (chal-cography) the use of polarized light has aided tremendously in the identification of a mineral. The determination of strain in transparent substances (photoelasticity) by the use of polarized light has lately become a commercial process, used in testing finished glass articles. The success of the use of polarized light with opaque materials has not been so great. The magnitude of the effects obtained is much less than that of the corresponding effects with transparent materials, and the mechanical difficulties are much greater. Although, separating or concentrating minerals, based on differences in. their magnetic properties has been practiced for years1 the early industrial applications of magnetic separators were involved with the most highly magnetic materials. These early separators were used to concentrate magnetite, separate metallic iron from furnace products, and separate iron and brass turnings. Next, the addition of a pretreatment operation, such as roasting or calcining, to transform certain iron-bearing minerals into a highly magnetic compound that could readily be separated from the altered mineral mixture using existing magnetic separation machines was added to the flowscheme. As the number of magnetic-separator installations grew, steady development of better equipment evolved including the design and implementation of induced magnets having high-intensity fields, These developments of course greatly expanded the field of magnetic separation and made it possible to commercially separate or concentrate very weakly magnetic minerals which previously had been considered as nonmagnetic minerals. A number of different designs of magnetic separators were well developed and the unit operation of magnetic separation was gaining wide acceptance in mineral processing operations when two events occurred that dampened these developments. First, the Mesabi iron range with its direct-shipping iron ore was discovered and placed into operation. This of course significantly reduced the need for magnetic separation to meet the raw material requirements of the iron and steel industry. Second, the advent of selective froth flotation, was so successful in solving many mineral process problems that electrical concentration techniques being developed at that time, including magnetic-separation methods, were either terminated or received low priority ratings. During the past two decades interest has been renewed in the use of electrical concentration methods to solve mineral separation problems. As the direct-shipping iron ore reserves are depleted more emphasis has been placed on magnetic upgrading of lower value iron ore available throughout the world. In addition, magnetic separation techniques have found numerous applications in the non-metallic and industrial minerals industry to supplement froth flotation and thus add to the variety of beneficiation methods available.

HIGH-GRADE manganese ore, from which manganese is obtained commercially, is not found in large quantities in any major steel-producing nation in the free world. The U. S. is a "have not" nation with respect to deposits of directly mineable high-grade manganese ore. Known resources of 48 pct Mn or better grade ore amount to less than 200,000 tons. In 1950 the U. S. steel industry consumed 1.8 million short tons of metallurgical grade manganese ore that contained about 800,000 tons of manganese. About 16 pct of the manganese content was lost in processing, so that about 650,000 tons, or 13 pounds per ton of steel actually entered into steel production. Under present practices use expands directly with steel output, and by 1975 the demand in both the U. S. and the rest of the free world is expected to be roughly 60 pet greater than in 1950. In peacetime about 80 pet of manganese consumption goes into steel production; high-manganese steel, dry cells, and chemicals account for the remainder. The manganese supply problem centers around high-grade ore for ferromanganese production. Use of ores containing less than 35 pet Mn sharply increase the costs of making ferromanganese. Use of ferro-manganese of grade below 70 pet in turn requires changes in steelmaking that increase steel cost. Under normal conditions the present small domestic production cannot be expected to increase. Major resources in the U. S. consist of 12 low-grade deposits. The cost of mining and treating these ores to extract a product as good as that yielded by imported ores is at least twice and in some cases more than four times the 1951 price of foreign ores delivered to the U. S. However, as long as trade relations and overseas shipping are not interrupted, deposits in India, Africa, and Brazil can meet steadily increasing demand at approximately present costs. Cost considerations indicate that the U. S. should continue to rely upon overseas sources for its peace-time supply, and that this situation is satisfactory. But, this does not take into account the question of how the U. S. will be able to meet its needs in war. Position of the Rest of the Free World In 1950, free world steel producers outside the United States, with a steel output of 70 million ingot tons, consumed about 1.3 million tons of metallurgical-grade ore. Their manganese ore demand, expected to increase directly with steel production, will by 1975 be about 2.3 million tons. Russia possesses over half the known manganese ore reserves of the world and is producing twice the tonnage of any other country. It supplied more than a third of the U. S. manganese requirements up to 1938 and again in 1948, but by 1950 Soviet manganese exports to the free world had virtually ceased. The free world's supply of manganese now comes mainly from India and Africa. Somewhat over 10 pet of U. S. imports came from Brazil and Cuba. Security Considerations In the event of war the U. S. might be substantially cut off from 90 pet of present sources. Reduction in manganese specifications might cut consumption by over 10 pet without seriously affecting steel quality. By elimination of losses in the production of ferromanganese savings as high as 10 pet might be possible. But, wartime manganese requirements cannot be met through conservation alone. To meet possible future emergencies the U. S. should continue its comprehensive security program for manganese, including stockpiling and research on the economic use of low-grade ore, domestic ores, the recovery of manganese from slag and the reduction of manganese requirements in steel production. If this work, including additional pilot plant operation is pursued vigorously, it should be possible in an emergency to get an adequate supply of manganese from domestic sources. The national stockpile then can be looked upon as a source of supply during the period of at least 2 years required to reach full-scale production from low-grade resources. Ferromanganese Smelting In comparison with smelting of pig iron, ferro-manganese smelting is a very wasteful process. Under present ferromanganese blast-furnace smelting practice, about 8 pet of the manganese in the furnace charge is lost to the slag, and roughly the same amount is lost to the stack gases; the total loss approaches 15 pct. Present practice is a compromise between excessive slag loss and excessive stack loss. In fact, it may be seriously questioned whether conventional blast furnace design is suitable for manganese smelting. U. S. Resources The known manganese deposits of the U. S. contain a total of 3500 million long tons of raw material and 75 million long tons of metallic manganese. More than 98 pct of this contained metal is in 12 large low-grade deposits of which the most important are those at Chamberlain, S. Dak; Cuyuna, Minn.; Aroostook County, Maine; and Artillery Peak, Ariz. Reserves of high-grade ore (48 pct Mn) amount to less than 200,000 tons. About 20 million tons of ore average over 15 pct Mn, and when grade is decreased to 10 pct Mn reserves amount to about 100 million long tons. If cut-off grade is decreased to 5 pet Mn, resources amount to 800 million long tons. Many of these low-grade ores may be beneficiated by flotation or other concentration methods. Pyrometallurgical Methods For smelting ferromanganese, it is essential to have an ore containing at least 50 pct manganese, with an Mn:Fe ratio of about 8:1. Direct smelting of 20 pct Mn concentrates is not promising. The only method that offers any promise involves two-step smelting.

IN THE mining and metallurgical industries, numerous problems arise requiring determinations of solid and of liquid particles suspended in air. Frequently, these problems are of local interest and involve purely economic or operating difficulties; on the other hand, toxic effects from the inhalation or the ingestion of substances suspended in air may be a matter of concern. For checking up process improvements or for determining ventilation efficiencies in problems of this general nature, various methods have been proposed. Although simpler methods are often satisfactory, precipitation combines several desirable features that other methods lack. This paper is, therefore, devoted to a discussion of portable alternating-current precipitators applicable to the quantitative determination and microscopy of dusts, fumes, and smokes in air. Small particles suspended in gases, such as air, are referred to in the literature as aerosols or suspensoids. Of these terms, suspensoids appears to be preferable as being more nearly in keeping with words in everyday use. In problems involving air pollution by small, particles-by suspensoids-it is convenient to distinguish three broad classes based on the size, the degree of dispersion, and the method by which the particles become suspended in the air. Dusts.-Particles or aggregates of particles, 150 to 1 micron in diameter, that are thrown into the air by mechanical agencies are termed dusts. Examples are silica, talc, cement, organic dusts such as hard rubber, starch, and cocoa; flocculated fume and smoke products. Fumes.-Particles, 0.2 to 1 micron in diameter, formed from chemical or physicochemical reactions are known as fumes. Examples are ammonium chloride, lead and mercury, zinc and magnesium oxides, fogs, and acid mists.

IN connection with the problems of bumps in coal mines, much has been written concerning the manner in which roof action and methods of mining enter [ ] into the pressure effects observed but little has been written upon the relationship between the physical properties of coal and associated rocks and the cause of bumps. The question of the strength of bituminous coal, of its elasticity, and the energy it can absorb and store has been neglected to a considerable extent in connection with this problem. STRENGTH OF COAL It is generally agreed that one of the necessary conditions for bumps is a strong [ ] coal.1 Therefore, since the strength of coal is an important factor, a study of this property should be made. Several investigators have conducted laboratory experiments upon the strength of coal, using small cubical or rectangular test pieces. An attempt will not be made to go into all of these investigations, but they are briefly summarized in Table I. Experiments of the U. S. Bureau of Mines8 and of Lawall and Holland (pp. 27 and 34 of ref. 9), however, indicate that regardless of whether the coal is a soft and weak semibituminous (Pocahontas No. 3) or a hard and strong bituminous (Stockton) coal, the maximum ultimate unit stress developed in laboratory tests is higher in small cubes than in larger cubes of the same coal.
