Direct observations were made on the recrystalli-zntion of a cold-rolled (110) [001] crystal of 3 pct Si-Fe by annealing thin sections of the specimen inside the electron microscope during examination. Subgrain formation, presumably by polygonization, occurs rapidly, followed by a slow increase in the subgrain size before recrystallization can be detected. No migration of the subgrain boundaries was observed, and the formation of recrystallization nuclei by coalescence of subgrains is suggested. Re-c~ystallization characteristics of various texture components were individually examined. AS reported in a previous paper: orientations of the various deformation texture components in a 70 pct cold-rolled (110) [0011 crystal of 3 pct Si-Fe were completely confirmed by transmission electron diffraction patterns taken at various areas of the specimen. These orientations can be summarized as follows: Over most areas of the deformed crystal (111) planes are parallel to the surface. These areas correspond to either $- the two main defor: mation textures, the (111) [112] or the (111) [112].2-5 Within a few areas, (100) planes parallel to the surface are frequently found. These areas represent the minor deformation texture component, the (100) [Oll] type, which is derived from rotated Neumann bands.2'4'5 Only in very rare instances are (110) planes found parallel to the surface. This orientation corresponds to the very weak texture component of the (110) [001] type. In a pole figure, this (110) [0011 orientation is located within the orientation spread between the two main (111) [1121 type textures. Usually the electron diffraction patterns taken at various areas of the specimen are very simple ones, i.e., for any one area the pattern consists only of sharply defined spots of a single orientation. In some areas, however, more or less continuous rings of weaker intensities are superimposed on a simple pattern, indicating the presence of a wide range of additional orientations. In order to understand in detail the recrystallization of this cold-worked crystal, the recrywtallization characteristics of each of the various deformation texture components must be examined. This can best be done by using a high-temperature stage and transmission electron microscopy techniques, whereby small areas corresponding to the various texture components can be selected individually for examination. The present paper presents results obtained by this method. MATERIAL AND METHOD Specimens were prepared from a previously studied1 single crystal of a commercial grade 3 pct Si-Fe alloy with an initial orientation (110) [00l], cold-rolled 70 pct from 0.014 in. to 0.004 in. in thickness. Thin foils were prepared by electrolytic polishing as described in the earlier paper.' Specimens of this thin foil were then mounted in a high temperature stage similar to the one designed by Whelan.6 A direct current was used as the heating source. The temperature of the heating grid was calibrated by means of a Pt vs Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple in a vacuum chamber (0.01 to 0.02µHg). Maximum variation within the temperature range of 250o to 000°C was about ± 25°C. After the desired areas were selected for examination, the specimen was heated to a low temperature for some time while the selected area was constantly watched. GEOLOGISTS who are acquainted with the mines of northeastern Mexico realize that the most important lead-silver replacement deposits of the province are confined to a single formation. But since the formation is several hundred meters thick, the author has determined the relative position of the lead mantos in the belief that this information will prove useful in the search for new mines. This article describes the stratigraphic location of lead-silver replacement deposits known in several mines situated in a region comprising part of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. The area studied extends for 200 km* (125 miles) from east to west and 70 km (45 miles) north to south.

The great mining region of Peru is a mountainous belt of country, running nearly the whole length of the republic, and comprising the two grand ranges of the Andes with the elevated table-lands between them. On the east of this belt are the extensive plains and fertile valleys of the Amazon and its tributaries. On the west is a narrow strip of coast 20 to 50 miles wide, for the most part a sandy desert, but producing abundant crops where irrigated ; and here are found petroleum (Department of Piura), salt (at Huacho and elsewhere), nitrate of soda in enormous amounts at the south, silver in a few localities (Province of Tarapaca), copper and other mineral products. The Western Cordillera, running nearly parallel with the shoreline, rises like a wall on the eastern side of the coast-belt, with passes from 15,000 to 18,000 feet high and peaks attaining 18,000 to 20,000 feet. Further east, at a varying distance, is the Eastern Cordillera, composed of broken mountain ranges which, considered as one group, have a general parallelism with the western chain, but individually vary greatly in direction, sometimes running nearly east and west, in places projecting out into the Amazonian lands, or here and there curving around to unite with the western ridge, and with this enclosing immense inter-alpine plains. These general features are indicated in Fig. 1. The surface of these plains is uneven and traversed by lower ranges of hills which surround large lakes, or rolling pampas, or fertile valleys; and through many of these last run rivers of considerable size. The whole country has a high altitude (averaging up to 15,000 or 16,000 feet), and slopes gradually north and east towards the Amazon, into which drain all its waters. MOST important of the naturalcalcium silicates is the meta¬silicate, CaSi03, known as wollastonite, after W. H. Wollaston. A large deposit of this mineral was dis¬covered some seven years ago near Code Siding, Rademacher mining dis¬trict, Kern County, Calif., the deposit being some 7500 ft. long and of an average width of 300 ft. It consists of a series of small domes striking north¬erly and southerly and with a dip of 81 ° to the south. This deposit was opened up by a series of small quarries showing a potential tonnage of 12,000,¬000 tons, allowing of cheap mining and transportation, the Southern Pa¬cific R.R. spur track being one mile north of the workings. Numerous sam¬ples taken from different points on the deposit, tested by Mr. Brinker, of the California Testing Laboratories, Los Angeles, showed an average as fol¬lows: Per Cent Silica (SiO2) 47.12 Lime (CaO) 41.72 Magnesia (MgO) 2.72 Alkalies (R,0) Trace Iron (Fe.,O,) 1.60 whereas the theoretical composition of of wollastonite, as given by William Shirley Bayley, is as follows: Silica 51.75 Lime 45.25 The tonnage and purity of this de¬posit led to investigations into its com¬mercial development. Early work es¬tablished the fact that wollastonite was ideal for the manufacture of a tough, almost unbreakable, glass similar to Pyrex. It also established the fact that wollastonite was particularly adapted for use in the manufacture of mineral wool, towards which further research was then directed. Briefly, the prin¬cipal advantages were the substantially unvarying chemical composition of the naturally occurring mineral and its characteristic of being relatively flexi¬ble and highly resilient when fused into a glass. A mineral wool produced therefrom is thus not only of highly uniform composition and color but is most desirable because of the high mechanical strength and length of the individual fibers constituting the wool. It is well known that mineral wool may be prepared by melting a suitable charge of raw material and then intro¬ducing a stream of a suitable fluid, such as air or steam, into a stream of the molten raw material. By this means the molten material is blown into threads or fibers, which are collected in a suitable chamber similar to a tun¬nel, from which they are removed from time to time or continuously. The concept of using a phase that is liquid at service temperatures as a component of coatings for refractory metals has been described. The liquid, an alloy of gold and silicon, is retained on a molybdemum surface by a capillary system made of molybdenum disilicide. The coating has the advantage of good thermal shock and has a self-henling chracteristic. In order for highly stressed structures to exceed a service temperature of 2000°F, it has become apparent that a development that does not depend on the traditional iron, cobalt, or nickel-base alloy is needed. Alloys of the refractory metals, i.e., molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum. niobium (colum-bium), and rhenium are potentially useful at extremely high temperatures that more conventional alloys would never be expected to achieve. A new alloy of molybdenum has become available that has a 100-hr rupture strength of 35,000 psi at 2200°F.1 As a result of this work, it may be assumed that a material with adequate mechanical properties at 2200?F is now available. Unfortunately, this alloy and all other known alloys of the refractory metals suffer from not being; serviceable in an oxidizing atmosphere for a very long time. In order to permit general use of refractory metals at high temperatures, it is necessary to prevent destructive oxidation by appropriate alloying or by protective coatings. The liquid phase coating reported here is representative of a concept for the protection of metals that permits higher service temperatures and introduces a new group of materials for selection as coatings. Coating Requirements—Service conditions that represent potential applications for refractory metals vary considerably: however, it is possible to consider two conditions that are usually present. The refractory metal1 component must be heated to the service temperature at least once and usually frequently. When a solid coating is used, usually the coating and basis metal do not have the same coefficient of expansion. This difference causes thermal stress in the coating that is aggravated by rapid heating and cooling and eventually causes coating failure. The second consideration is the probability that there will be damage to the coating by some environmental condition. In jet engines, for example, it is expected that large particles, stones, metal parts, and so forth, will strike a bucket at high speed and cut a hole in the coating. In addition to the above considerations, the coating must also have other fundamental properties. Obviously, it must be oxidation resistant. In addi- tion, it must prevent permeation of oxygen and subsequent oxidation of the basis metal at the interface. Also, diffusion of the basis metal to the outside surface and subsequent oxidation there must be prevented. Finally, the coating must not react with the basis metal to form a weak bond at the interface. It should be noted that the coating need not support a load: it must only remain intact. Liquid Phase Coating Design Factors—In the use of a liquid as a principal coating constituent, it would be expected that the two service conditions mentioned above would be satisfied. A liquid would flow under the influence of the thermal strain developed by coating-basis metal expansion mismatch such that failure from this source would not be expected to occur. It is also probable that the ability of a liquid to flow would provide a self-healing effect. Thus, damage caused by particles in the atmosphere would be repaired. A third advantage is evident in that vapor pressure rather than melting point limits the service temperature. This latter advantage permits use of low melting but oxidation resistant metals such as gold or copper that would be quite useless if the solid state was required. A low viscosity liquid alone. however, is a totally unsuitable coating because it will simply flow off a component, particularly under the influence of a high acceleration field. A method of preventing liquid loss must be devised. In this case, it is desired that the liquid have a low viscosity so that it may easily flow into flaws; thus, raising the viscosity is not a satisfactory solution. One other inherent difficulty is caused by the high mobility of atoms in the liquid state as compared to the solid state. Because of this mobility, it would be expected that gases would diffuse more rapidly through a liquid. It is also probable that the solubility of oxygen in the liquid would be comparatively high. These factors would tend toward rapid permeation of oxygen and oxidation of the substrate. It is most reasonable that this problem could be solved by incorporating a solid phase, which is impermeable to gases, as a component of the coating. To overcome the tendency of a liquid to flow easily, it is possible to use surface tension to advantage. If the surface were made up of a large number of capillary tubes of sufficiently small diameter, then surface tension would hold the liquid even against the acceleration of a centrifugal field.

In the course of the examination, at the BureLu of Standards, of fusible tin boiler plugs for the Steamboat Inspection Service, it became evident that an investigation should be undcrtaken to determine the precautions necessary in the manufacture of acceptable plugs. The results of the tests of these plugs show that their manufacture has improved, though at present not all of the plugs tested are, satisfactory. Table 1 gives the result of tests of some 1500 plugs from about 100 makers. Records of the tests show that several of the makers were able to produce satisfactory plugs with every pouring. The Steamboat Inspection Service has the following specifications for fusible plugs: "Fusible plugs for use in boilers of steam vessels under the jurisdiction of the Steamboat Inspection Service shall be made of bronze casing with the bore tapering continuously and openly from end to end, and filled from end to end with tin not less than 99.7 per cent. pure and to contain not more than 0.1 per cent. of lead and not more than 0.1 per cent. of zinc. The small end of the bore may be countersunk not more than 1/32 in. in depth and width, but no recess, thread, or cavity other than this countersink shall be allowed." IN a study of the cold-rolling characteristics of iron-base alloys with 3 to 12 pct Al, the influence of aluminum content on the cold-rolling textures was evaluated. This work was undertaken to determine if binary iron-aluminum alloys possessed cold-rolling textures similar to other body-centered-cubic alloys and to contribute additional information on the effect of solute concentration on the cold- rolling textures. Gradual changes in cold-rolling textures with an increase in solute content have been observed in copper1 and in titanium.2 Iron-base alloys containing 3.0, '6.0, and 12.0 pct aluminum were vacuum-induction-melted in a magnesia crucible and permanent-mold cast. The materials used were high-purity electrolytic iron and 99.99 pct grade aluminum. Each ingot was 1 in. square in cross section by 12 in. in height. The bottom half of each ingot was soaked for 1 hr at 1000°C and rolled at 1000°C to a thickness of 0.055 in. with the long axis of the ingot parallel to the rolling direction. The strip was reheated between passes to maintain a rolling temperature of 1000°C.

A DETAILED description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in 1920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E Hunner,1 M. H Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,3 it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved.† The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment, of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and "paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Taconite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with interbedded slate layers. "Paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers interbedded in the iron formation, high iii phosphorus, alumina and moisture The iron ores fall into two classes- (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite) The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high+manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Bessemer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden-removal and shaft-mining costs. STRIPPING PRACTICE Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer. In the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of equipment and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be overequipped and high depreciation charges will have to be absorbed

The silver phase of silver and finely divided alumina composites is shown to grow as single crystabs upon solidification from the melt. These crystals grow without the aid of an externally applied thermal gradient or a mold. The single-crystal growth is more readily disrupted as the alumina content varies from the optimum concentration of 20 wt pct. Pretreatment such as variation of fabrication pressure, and presintering of the specimens appear to play a lesser role in this phenomenon. In actual practice the growth of single crystals of metals from the melt is a tedious, painstaking process.' Care must be taken to insure the proper thermal gradients and rate of growth in a vibration-free environment. Excellent single crystals can be grown when these variables are controlled. When a second insoluble and finely divided phase is present in the melt the growth of single crystals is difficult, if not impossible, even under the most favorable conditions outlined above. During the past few years, a composite of silver and alumina has demonstrated an ability to resist flow even though the major phase, silver, is mo1ten. 2 A more surprising feature of this material is the ease with which single crystals of silver grow upon cooling the composite from temperatures above the melting point of silver to temperatures near room temperature. Observations have been made that demonstrate that single crystals of silver will grow even when conditions most unfavorable for growth of pure silver crystals exist. The crystals grown in this manner are imperfect in that a great deal of subgrain structure exists. It is the purpose of this manuscript to qualitatively describe this process and to attempt to isolate the influencing factors of this behavior. MATERIAL PREPARATION The composite material is prepared by powder-metallurgical techniques. Two items of great importance are the introduction of oxygen into the system and the obvious need for a thorough mixing of the metallic and refractory oxide phases. The oxygen is necessary in order that the silver wets the alumina. Without oxygen the phases separate and the material shows no unusual properties. In order to supply the needed oxygen the silver is added in the form of silver oxide which is readily decomposed to oxygen and silver upon heating. The silver oxide is readily obtained in a finely divided form that allows a uniform mixture of the alumina and silver oxide to be prepared. The correct ratio of alumina to silver oxide is mixed in the presence of alcohol in an ordinary food blender. The mixture has the consistency of a thin slurry and after mixing for approximately 20 min is dried and pressed into billets at various pressures. Computer simulation of mine ventilation systems, after a slow start in the early sixties, is gaining increasing acceptance for planning, design, and evaluation purposes. Numerous programs are readily available from government, university, consulting, and industry sources. The computer adage "garbage in, garbage out" is as applicable in ventilation engineering as in any other application of computers, and has been responsible for the questionable results obtained in some instances. The source of input data for a ventilation simulation is most often a pressure-quantity survey of the mine, or, in the case of a new mine, information derived from a survey of an existing mine which has conditions similar to those expected in the new mine. The crucial step is to generate simulation input data from the ventilation survey. Problems such as quantities that do not balance, pressure gradients opposite to measured air flow, differences in the pressure datum in a multi-shaft mine, modeling of leakage, and deviations in flow from the square law (H=RQ2) are frequently encountered and must be resolved. The purpose of this paper is to discuss these aspects and to propose procedures which can lead to input data for valid simulations of mine ventilation systems.

CORPORAL SHEPPARD B. GORDY Sheppard B. Gordy, a brief biography of whom was printed inn the January Bulletin, entered the employ of the Braden Copper Co. immediately on his graduation from the Sheffield Scientific School in 1912. He remained with this company four years, working up through the various grades to assistant foreman and foreman to one of the individual mines. The last year he was in its employ, he acted as general mine foreman. He was for a short time with the Chile Exploration Co. and then went with the Andes Exploration Co. (Anaconda) and remained with CORPORAL SHEPPARD B. GORDY. the latter, doing mine exploration and development work, until he sailed for home in June, 1918, to give a more personal and active service to his country in her need. He declined a tender of induction into an officers' training camp, at the urgent request of Professor McClelland supplemented by Mr. Potter, because they demonstrated to his satisfaction that he could give more valuable service to his country in helping out with the aircraft production. Being within the draft age, in order to carry out this plan, it was necessary for him to be called by his Local Board and sent to camp. This call came Aug. 26. Two weeks before that time lie had gone to Dayton, Ohio; to begin the study of aircraft production, and was sent by the Dayton Board to Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, Ohio, where he died of pneumonia on Oct. 9.

F. C. Bond: This is an outstanding paper on comminution theory and represents a considerable advance in mathematical formulation. It clears the way for a discussion that should ultimately decide whether the work index should be considered as a parameter according to the Third Theory or as a constant. In the empirical differential equation dE = —Cdx/x [1] either Corn must be treated as a variable to satisfy known crushing and grinding conditions. The author has chosen the exponent n as the variable, with C as a constant. According to the Third Theory, in the general case n is a constant equal to 3/2, and C is a variable related to the work index Wi. If x is placed equal to P (the size in microns which 80 pct of the product passes) and F is the size 80 pct of the feed passes, then C equals 5 W1, and dE = 5 -5 Widx/x = 10 Wi 10 Wi w = vP vF which is the basic equation of the Third Theory. It is apparent that this integration involves the error of treating the parameter Wi as a constant, just as the author's treatment involves the error of integrating his variable n as a constant. These errors are probably relatively unimportant, considering the small range of the variables. When more is known about the factors contained in the work index, Eq. 1 can be revised as a partial differential equation. The Third Theory exponent of 1/2, or n = 3/2 in the Charles' differential equation (Eq. l), was not chosen primarily because it is the average between the Kick and Rittinger exponents; this may be merely fortuitous, since it is illogical to define truth as the average between two errors. It was first discovered from the study of a large mass of crushing and grinding data and confirmed by laboratory testing. The general correspondence of the Third Theory equation to actual crushing and grinding results over the entire size reduction range argues strongly that a fundamental phenomenon is involved. The a posteriori theoretical explanation of the constant Third Theory exponent is that the work done in breaking rock is proportional to the length of the crack tips formed. Compressive force applied to the rock results in deformation and strain energy. When this locally exceeds the breaking strength a crack tip forms, the surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip and extends it to split the rock, with release of the energy as heat. Under rapid impact the crack tip may form before the strain has reached equilibrium, resulting in less energy expenditure and probably a coarser product. In any case, the elastic limit of a brittle material is practically the same as its breaking strength, and the work necessary to form the crack tip is the work required to break. The crack length of a ton of broken rock cannot be measured directly. However, the particle shapes of feed and product are similar, and the crack length is considered equal to the square root of one half of the new surface area formed. It is, therefore, proportional to 1/vD, where D is the equivalent product particle diameter. This is the basis of the Third Theory equation. Many secondary factors can be imposed upon the crack length breakage. These may cause the Third Theory work index to increase or decrease somewhat as the product size becomes finer. The work index is properly a parameter rather than a constant, making it an increasingly valuable practical criterion of the work input required in crushing and grinding.

On the other hand, the uneducated man, though shrewd and well-informed, will relate facts and events as they recur to him, generally in disorder; in his effort to recollect and in his attempt to rectify forgetfulness he will pause irregularly, filling the intervals with meaningless phrases, such as "and then", "and so", or "said he to me", "said I to him"; and even the continuous parts of his story will be told confusedly-because he has not learned the proper use of words.* My own experience as an editor of technical manuscripts has taught me that the misuse of 'that' and 'which' is a fruitful cause of obscurity and confusion. The relative pronouns have distinct functions, and no writer can express himself clearly until he has learned to discriminate between these functions. For example : The engineers who refused to submit were discharged. The engineers, who refused to submit, were discharged. The engineers that refused to submit were discharged.
