THIS paper presents in an abbreviated form the chief points of interest in an investigation of the tarnish-resistant qualities of silver alloys, an investigation which has been carried out as a joint research by the Bureau of Mines and the Bureau of Standards and will later be reported in detail in an official publication from these bureaus. In 1923 a Commission of Gold and Silver Inquiry was created by a Resolution of the U. S. Senate to study the causes of the depressed condi¬tion of the gold and silver industry. In cooperation with this commission the Bureau of Mines made a preliminary survey to determine in what ways, if any, it might be possible to increase the uses of silver. One of the possibilities indicated by this survey was the development of silver alloys which should be non-tarnishing, or at least less-tarnishing, than the usual sterling silver (copper-silver). The preparation of a rather wide variety of silver alloys and the determination of their behavior under accelerated tarnish tests in the laboratory was therefore undertaken by the bureaus, of Mines and Standards as a joint investigation. PREVIOUS WORK ON TARNISH RESISTING SILVERS At about the time this work was undertaken interest in tarnish-resisting silvers was rather keen due to announcements from England that there had been developed a new silver alloy, "Silanca," which was resistant to tarnish. It was even frequently described in the popular press as "non-tarnishing." A few samples and several analyses of "Silanca" which were available indicated that it was an alloy of sterling fineness, that is, it contained about 93 per cent. of silver, with approximately 4.5 per cent. of antimony and either cadmium or zinc, or both, to make the remaining 2.5 per cent.

The Workmen's Compensation Act of Ontario was passed in 1915 and Miners' Phthisis was added to the list of compensable industrial diseases in 1916. Under this provision of the Act only about two cases were compensated per year. In 1924, The Department of Public Health made a survey of miners in the four principal camps—Sudbury, Porcupine, Kirkland Lake and Cobalt—and the survey indicated that an alarming proportion of the men exposed to dust had silicosis in one or other of its several stages. A number of conferences were held between representatives of the Department of Mines, the Department of Public Health, the Compensation Board and the mine operators. The operators were advised that in the earliest stages of silicosis there was no physical disability and if men in that stage were removed from underground there would be little danger of permanent disability. They were further advised that if active steps were taken at once to compensate men that had some real disability and remove from the mines men in the early stages of silicosis, the first cost would be the greatest and thereafter their liability should decrease. As a result of this advice, and having at that time no reason to doubt the findings of the survey, the operators agreed to do all that was asked of them and cooperate with the Government in the steps believed necessary to meet the situation, and to provide compensation for the men affected. Amendments in 1926 Arrangements were made for the necessary amendments to the Mines Act and the Workmen's Compensation Act and these amendments were passed in 1926. The Amendment to the Mines Act provided that all underground employees must be the holders of certificates certifying that they were free from tuberculosis of the respiratory organs and further provided that the certificates must be renewed annually. The Government, however, at that time refused to adopt a form of certificate for applicants certifying as to their physical fitness for underground work. The trite maxim that man is a tool-using animal might nowa-days be amended by saying that man is a tool-choosing animal. The chipped flint, at first all-sufficient, gave way to hammered bronze, and that, in turn, to wrought-iron and steel. As our knowledge of metals increases, we learn to specialize; we temper and anneal; we alloy and intermix; and we fashion for ourselves a metal suitable to our necessities. The knowledge of the properties and uses of the various metals and their alloys has become the capital of every constructive engineer, and the currency of every intelligent brass-founder aid blacksmith. Prom year to year, the specifications of the designer become more rigid, and the steel-maker is forced to study more closely the qualities obtainable by changing the treatment, or altering the composition, of his metal. Of making alloys there is no end. We have heard much, during the last decade, of manganese-steel and chrome-steel, of aluminum and tungsten, of titanium- and silicon- and copper-steels, and of every conceivable union into which steel could be coerced or cajoled. Without denying to each of these alloys novel and valuable properties, it. must be admitted that, of all alloys, the one which shows the greatest range of adaptability, and has met the largest measure of popular approval, is nickel-steel. Introduced to public notice by Mr. Riley, in 1889, its field of usefulness has been rapidly enlarged, until, at the present day, the use of nickel-steel is as thoroughly recognized as that of carbon- or manganese-steel. It is proposed that shape anisotropy in the internal structure of materials be defined by distribution functions which specify what fraction of the total line length or boundary area lies in a given direction. Methods are descriibed for determinirg these distribution functions from measurements on sections through an opaque material. New derivations, that have certain advanifages over those given previously, are Provided for well-known expressions used in estinzating the total density of lineal or areal features. INCREASING attention is being given to the quantitative description of imicrostructures in metals and other materials. This interest stems from the recognition that the structure often provides a convenient half-way point between the properties on the one hand and the processing variables on the other. Such cross correlations become increasingly desirable as materials become more complex and the demands on them more stringent. One of the principal aims in structure analysis is therefore to find parameters that are readily measurable and specific enough to be correlated with other properties of the material. Certain properties, such as magnetic and mechani cal behavior, are strongly influenced by structural anisotropies; in order to relate such properties to the structure it is obviously necessary to have means of specifying and measuring the type and degree of anisotropy. For the determination of preferred orientations in crystal structure, X-ray diffraction methods are available and are widely used, but scant attention has been given to the estimation of anisotropy in the shape of grains and particles. It is the latter problem that will be considered in this paper. It is evident that shape anisotropy can be describe in terms of preferred orientations of lineal and area elements of the structure. It will be shown that these preferred orientations can, in turn, be specified by distribution functions that define what fraction of the total line length or boundary area lies in a given direction. Methods will be given for determining the distribution functions from measurements on sections through the structure. Even when the orientation distributions are of no interest per se, they still have an important bearing on the measurement of the total line length or boundary area by means of an intercept analysis. The treatment in terms of orientation distribution functions leads to new derivations, that have certain advantages of those given previously, for the well-known expressions used in estimating the total density of lineal or areal features. The treatment is divided into two main sections. The first deals with the orientation distribution of a two-dimensional array of lineal features such as occurs in the projected image of dislocations in electron transmission microscopy. The other section treats the estimation of the distribution of lineal and areal features dispersed in three dimensions.

This paper gives the results: first,, of a research into the somewhat extensive literature of titanium; and second, of a series of original tests upon the effect of titanium on iron castr ings. New investigations have also been made upon the effect of titanium on steel, but I hope to treat this subject in an independent paper at some later date, and, therefore, will not discuss the experiments in detail here. The combined results of this study, which extended over a period of more than two years, can be briefly summarized as follows : 1. Steel or cast-iron, in which the titanium is properly proportioned, and which has been properly treated, is improved in strength, toughness, and durability against wear, such 'as, for example, the wear of railroad-rails, of steel and chilled-iron rolls, car-wheels, etc. 2. These improvemerits seem to be caused, not so much by the direct effect of titanium on the metal, as by its cleansing influence in removing harmful impurities, such as oxygen and oxides, nitrogen, occluded slags, and perhaps also sulphur. It appears also to reduce segregation, which would contribute to the same end. 3. In order that its effects may be fully realized, the treatment of steel or iron with titanium must be correctly performed. StKip of any of the metals used for deep drawing operations occasionally yields cups that are defective because of a rim that varies in height around the cup in a wave-like manner. Some such defects are traceable to tools or other press factors, but when the protuberances formed (usually four in number on brass and other copper alloys) are symmetrically disposed with respect to the rolling direction of the strip, they are invariably attributable to the metal. The effect is known as "earing" and the protuberances are called "ears." Other terms frequently heard are "tips," "scallops," and "corners." It is recognized that the effect is most commonly a result of a directional crystal structure produced by rolling and annealing operations in the manufacture of the metal strip. Numerous papers dealing with various aspects of the earing effect have appeared in the literature, those listed in the references1 being especially interesting and valuable. An investigation of the factors influencing earing of brass cups has been in progress in the laboratories of the American Brass Co. for several years, and it was thought desirable to make some of the results generally available in summarized form. The present paper discusses many factors that do and do not contribute to ear formation. In addition, a section is devoted to methods of minimizing the earing tendency of brass sheet by proper selection of the cold-rolling and annealing schedule by which it is produced. In the space available, it is impossible to quote detailed experimental procedures and numerical results. However, the authors make no statement that they do not believe to be properly substantiated, either by experimental evidence obtained under laboratory conditions or by experience in the actual production of deep-drawing brass in the brass mill. Mechanism of Ear Formation It must be clearly understood that the formation on cups of symmetrical ears, four or more in number, is attributable solely to the strip metal, and results from the strip having different deformation characteristics in different directions. The tools used in the drawing process, or the type and completeness of lubrication of the strip, have nothing to do with the problem of ears, although they do, of course, greatly affect the "drawing quality" of the strip and the general appearance of the cup. A single tip may be drawn up on the rim of a cup because of misalignment of the tools, or because the gauge of metal varies from side to side of the strip. The two-ear form that sometimes appears is also traceable to gauge variations. However, the four-ear and six-ear symmetrical forms that we are concerned with here are caused by factors inherent in the structure of the metal itself.

In most branches of the mining industry it is a well-recognized fact that care must be taken to protect the mineral deposit from undue physical injury. It is comparatively easy to grasp this idea when the mineral is a solid and the lives of workmen depend directly upon the care with which it is removed from its natural position, but when the product is a liquid drawn up from pools several thousand feet beneath the surface of the ground through openings only a few inches in diameter, it requires some imagination to picture underground conditions and the changes which must often occur. The development of the petroleum deposits of California has been attended by numerous accidents, the results of which are readily noticed at the top of the wells and in the profit and loss accounts of the operators. Determination of the cause of these accidents has been the subject of considerable study, which naturally has fallen upon men familiar with technical methods. The greatest damage to the oil deposits of California has resulted from water finding its way into the oil-bearing sands, and it is the purpose of this paper to set forth briefly this phase of the oil industry. Much of the material here presented has previously appeared in publications issued by the California State Mining Bureau, which, under the direction of State Mineralogist Fletcher McN. Hamilton, has investigated the subject and taken steps toward improvement of conditions. The writer, having been in charge of this branch of the Bureau work, has gained considerable knowledge of existing conditions. Generally speaking, the oil-bearing formations of California are soft, unconsolidated sand beds, separated by clay strata, which are also soft. Some of the sand beds carry water instead of oil. All of the beds are more or less separated, probably being of lenticular shape. Very few of the beds in the oil fields lie flat or undisturbed over any great area. Folding and tilting are common, and faulting also occurs in some of the fields. The accumulation of oil is not confined to any single structural feature, such as the anticline, but occurs in many other structural features. STATISTICS just released by the American Society for Engineering Education and given in the table, show that the total current enrollment of 200,227 in the 220 engineering schools of the U. S. and Canada represents a gain of 9.8 pct over a year ago, while the mineral engineering enrollment in the U. S. of 9826 shows a gain of only 4 pct in that field. The spurt in the mineral group shown last year is thus slowed down to less than one half of that in the whole engineering student body. Last year, it was growing more rapidly than the whole engineering group.

THE two chemical compounds, natural sodium carbonate and sodium sulphate, in their anhydrous condition are dealt in as "soda ash and "salt cake”-names from an earlier day that are not as precise as the present accepted terminology. Once a large part of the sodium carbonate recovered was in the ash of seaweed, so it was logically called soda ash, and the corresponding potassium carbonate, once mainly recovered from wood ashes, was called potash. The term "salt cake" was applied to the sodium sulphate resulting from interaction of sodium chloride with sulphuric acid or sodium bisulphate, to form hydrogen chloride gas and an anhydrous cake of sodium sulphate. It was called "salt cake" and also "glassmaker's salt cake" because much of it was used in the production of glass. The two salts occur in nature in a variety of forms, but whereas an- hydrous sodium sulphate (thenardite) is fairly common, the anhydrous normal sodium carbonate, Na2CO3, is almost never found in nature. The monohydrate (thermonatrite), Na2CO3.2H2O, is seen occasionally, but it is never a major constituent in natural "soda" deposits. The high solubility of normal sodium carbonate is one reason for this. While both compounds occur widely in brines, the solid salts found in nature are usually trona (Na2CO3.NaHC03.2H2O) and thenardite (Na2SO4). The natural brines containing workable quantities of the two sodium salts are largely found in the arid and semiarid portions of the western United States and other countries. The classical discussion of the resources of these brines are those of Clarke,5 Chatard.4 Packard,19 Gale,11 and Wells.28 From North Dakota to California and from Arizona to the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Manitoba, saline lakes, dried-up lakes, playas, and similar land-locked depressions contain accumulations of saline matter. The paper seeks to present the results of experimentation in room and pillar stopes with different ground conditions to determine the safe working span. In the experimental stopes, ground movement was monitored with gradual widening of the room span. The field measurements included closure between the stope walls and the extent of ground movement in the hangwall using borehole extensometers. hock bolting was used as an exclusive support system which enabled introduction of scrapers for improving productivity. In one nine, phosphate bed, 3 to 3.5 m thick dipping at 45O and overlaid by weak laminated shale, was worked at shallow depth of cover. h the experimental panel, five s topes were worked with spans varying from 5.5 to 7 m. In the second mine, the chalcopyrite orebody up to 6 m in thickness dipping at 25 - 30" was worked at a depth of 1100 m. The hangwall consisted of fairly competent schistose rocks and therefore 10 to 15 m wide spans could be experimented. The field measurements confirmed that in the phosphate mine with weak shale roof, 7 m span could be safely worked with subsequent caving of the bolted roof. In the copper mine, 15 m span could be worked and the stopes required subsequent backfilling for better ground control.

Far reaching changes in the executive machinery of the Federal Government are proposed in bills recently introduced in each House of Congress. The Department of the Interior will become the Department of Public Works, if the legislation proposed is enacted; the main idea is to assemble all engineering activities of the Government in one department. Such bureaus of the Interior Department as are non-engineering in character are to be placed under the jurisdiction of appropriate departments, while engineering bureaus from other departments are to be included in the Department of Public Works. The bill proposes that the Patent Office is to be removed from the Interior Department and placed under the Department of Commerce. The Bureau of Pensions is assigned to the Department of the Treasury. The Bureau of Education goes to the Labor Department. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is transferred to the Department of Labor, with the proviso that the engineering and construction work and the land and mineral surveys now performed under the direction of the Bureau of Indian Affairs are to he prosecuted under the Department of Public Works. St. Elizabeth's Hospital and the Freedman's Hospital in Washington are assigned to the Treasury Department. Columbia Institution for the Deaf and the Howard University go to the Bureau of Education, under the provisions of the bill. On the other hand, the Department of Public Works is to absorb the Supervising Architect's Office of the Treasury Department; the Construction Division, River and Harbor Improvements, Mississippi River Commission, and California Debris Commission of the War Department; the Bureau of Standards and the Coast and Geodetic Survey of the Department of Commerce; the Bureau of Public Roads and the Forest Service of the Department of Agriculture.

DOES hand-sorting of mill feed pay? The fact that the practice is so general would seem to indicate that there must be good reasons for following it; yet, to my mind, the advantage in many cases is doubtful enough to invite a thorough discussion of the subject, in an effort to determine under what conditions hand-sorting does pay. A typical sorting plant in the Coeur d'Alene district handles about 800 tons of mine-run ore per day. The material is run over a grizzly with about 4-in. opening; the oversize is crushed to about 4-in. size and joins the undersize, and the whole product is washed and screened on trommels with about 1 ½ -in. openings. The oversize from these trommels is spread on a belt and the waste and first-class ore are sorted out by hand, the residue being further crushed, and passes, together with the trommel undersize, into the mill feed bins. About 50 tons of shipping ore and 150 tons of waste are sorted out per day, leaving about 600 tons of mill feed. To sort out this material requires 20 ore sorters and five bosses and repairmen. The normal cost of hand-sorting is about 16 c. per ton of run-of-mine ore, or 65 c. per ton of material sorted out. I believe that straight crushing and milling of the run-of-mine ore, in this case, is not only cheaper, but is metallurgically moree canonical and efficient than hand-sorting followed by milling of the residue. At one of the Bunker Hill rock-houses, 1250 tons of run-of-mine ore are reduced to pass 30-mm., or about 1 ¼ -in. opening in six hours, requiring five men. The equipment and the power consumed are not greatly different from that required in a sorting plant of the same capacity, and the normal cost of thus preparing the feed for milling is under 3 c. per ton of mine product. The relative cheapness of this method as against hand-sorting is thus clearly established, the saving being about 13 c. per ton. If there is any virtue in hand-sorting, then, it must lie in the metallurgical results achieved.

METALLURGISTS have used borax as a fluxing agent traditionally, but until recently elemental boron has played an insignificant role as an alloying element. Neither the metal nor its compounds have been regarded as important metallurgical materials and there is a surprising lack of knowledge concerning their metallurgical behavior. The new applications to steelmaking of both boron and borates, which arose in part from wartime incentives and restrictions, have been seriously handicapped by this lack of data. For example, rasorite, a naturally occurring sodium borate, has been shown to be an effective substitute for aluminum as a ladle deoxidizer in rimming steels.1 Likewise, the effectiveness of boron as an alloying agent has been demonstrated, 2,3 giving deep hardening when used in restricted amounts. The exploitation of both of these uses has been retarded by the difficulty of attaining suitable metallurgical control. Recognizing that the most important information required was a knowledge of the equilibrium between boron and oxygen dissolved in liquid iron, Gurry4 calculated this relation from the best thermal data available. However, estimates of the entropy of melting of boron, the activity coefficient of boron in liquid iron and the activity coefficient of B203 in slag were involved, and experimental work on this problem was obviously desirable. The experiments to be described were planned to establish the boron-oxygen relations in liquid iron and to demonstrate at the same time the ferroborate slag compositions in equilibrium with various amounts of oxygen in liquid iron. Accordingly, slags containing varying proportions of iron and boron oxides were held in contact with molten iron, and samples of both slag and metal were analyzed. The limitations upon the accuracy of the data will be considered, but in a practical sense the oxygen levels that can be attained in iron by iron borate slags, and the amounts of boron in iron at these oxygen levels were established. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE No entirely suitable refractory was found for the mixtures of iron oxide and boron oxide used as slags. Crucibles of silica, magnesia, Ramix, beryllia, and zirconia were all tried unsuccessfully. The most satisfactory method discovered for handling them was the rotating-crucible technique, which creates a parabolic crucible of liquid iron 5,6 Even this was not entirely successful, for at steelmaking temperatures (1600°C.) the slags had such a low surface tension that they crept up to the refractory and slowly dissolved it. A transmission electron microscope study was made of magnesium single crystals deformed in torsion using the basal pole as the forsional axis. While this type of deformation is predicted to result in the formation of hexagonal networks of screw dislocations, these networks were not observed. The basic dislocation arrangement consisted of arrays of nearly parallel and approximately equally spaced dislocations. The average dislocation density was over an order of magnitude higher than that required to account for the torsional deformation. The observed high rate of work hardening in these crystals is consistent with both their high dislocation densities and the arrangement of dislocations in pile-ups. The experimental observations are also in agreement with the assumption that dislocation sources are activated not only at the surface but at interior locations as well. In considering torsional deformation, Amelinckx and Dekeyser1 postulated that when a torque is applied to a crystal oriented with a glide plane normal to the specimen axis, deformation occurs by the following steps: 1) Nucleation of dislocation sources at or near the specimen surface in areas where the shear stress, resolved along a slip Burgers vector, is a maximum; 2) the screw orientations of the dislocations accommodating the twist move inwards towards the specimen center. If two glide directions lie on the glide plane, the geometry shown in Fig. 1 should result; 3) the screw dislocations that pile up in the central part of the specimen cross-slip to form a grid. At the same time, screws of opposite sign and most edges leave the specimen. Tinder,2 using zinc crystals twisted about the basal pole, independently reached essentially the same conclusions. He suggested a mechanism involving nucleation of ?(1120) screw dislocations at the six points of highest resolved shear stress that lie on the cross-section near the surface. Under the applied shear stress these dislocations were assumed to move inward and interact so as to form a hexagonal network of screw dislocations. Today it is often accepted that rotational slip occurs by a mechanism of the above type, but to our understanding this has never been experimentally proved. This paper reports an experimental study of rotational slip, using magnesium single crystals, that indicates that in this metal rotational slip does not conform well to this mechanism. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Mechanical Testing. Specimens with a (0002) axis were prepared from magnesium crystals of 99.95 pct purity grown by Jillson's3 modified Bridgman technique. The opinion has been widely held that the corrosion of alpha brass occurs by the selective solution of zinc. As late as 1939, Fink1 and Evans2 suggested that in the initial stage of the corrosion the selective solution of zinc produces copper-rich areas, which subsequently act as cathodes that facilitate the deposition of copper. Previously Abrams3 had shown that most of the copper found on corroded brass was re-deposited and not residual, although he did not consider the nature of the initiation of the corrosion process. Enough data exist to indicate that any metal surface is sufficiently heterogeneous to provide the anodes and cathodes necessary for the initiation of corrosion.4,5 Thus, for alpha brass we need postulate not an initial selective solution of zinc, but only the existence of local differences in electrochemical potential. The heterogeneity responsible for potential differences may arise from oxide and other films as well as from alloy concentration gradients. Even though selective corrosion may be possible in some alloy systems, previous data on alpha brass as well as the experimental work reported in this paper do not require this supposition. Bengough and May16 in a discussion of Abrams' paper, first suggested the addition of small amounts of arsenic (0.03 per cent) to a1pha brass to prevent the redeposition of copper (dezincification). This suggestion was later substantiated by Nixon.7 In their studies of the inhibiting influence of arsenic, Evans and Fink were led to the selective-solution hypothesis in order to explain the initial corrosion of such alloys. They believed that an arsenic film covered anode areas and prevented the formation of copper-rich spots capable of acting as cathodes for the deposition of copper. They did not consider, however, the mechanism by which the arsenical film was formed. Bengough and May,a in another publication, suggested that the commonly found gray or black arsenical film may act to: (I) carry oxygen to the brass surface, (2) increase the discharge potential of copper on brass, (3) precipitate cuprous chloride from colloidal suspension in chloride solutions. Masing9 assumed that the film found upon arsenical brass was metallic arsenic. His measurements of hydrogen overvoltage of bulk arsenic led him to believe that the inhibition of dezincification occurs because the overvoltage of a brass surface is lowered by the arsenic film. He reasoned that this film would permit the more rapid reduction of hydrogen at the cathode, which would prevent the redeposition of copper. In a recent paper,10 we have pointed out that the film formed during the corrosion of arsenical brass and copper in stagnant solutions is essentially arsenious oxide (As2O3),

INTRODUCTION Porphyry copper deposits have been reported from the Caribbean area by Pease (1966), Cox, et al. (1973), Guild (1974), Kesler, et al. (1975), and others. This chapter summarizes the most widely known characteristics of those deposits. Only one deposit that conceivably can be classed as a porphyry copper occurrence is in production (Pueblo Viejo, Dominican Republic), but others are known whose tonnage and grade are of economic interest. Deposits in this province may be classified as copper-gold or copper-molybdenum types (Kesler, 1972), but deposits associated with quartz-rich plutons that have high Na2O:K2O and high gold:copper but low molybdenum: copper ratios dominate. Porphyry copper occurrences are reported in the literature from Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Cuba. Only the porphyry copper deposits from Puerto Rico are extensively described in the literature; consequently the Caribbean porphyry copper province in general is not as well documented as the southern Cordilleran orogen. Because past published technical descriptions are incomplete, some data presented here are new to the literature. The Caribbean includes the island arcs between North and South America. Porphyry copper occurrences are known from the Greater Antilles, the generally east-west trending group of islands that lies south of North America. Fig. 48, therefore, only covers the Greater Antilles portion of the Caribbean. Porphyry copper deposits in this area are not described by the Lowell and Guilbert (1970) model in details of metallization (general paucity of molybdenum), alteration (scarcity of orthoclase), or petrography (preponderance of quartz diorite). Therefore, this model should be modified to include deposits associated with quartz-bearing plutons such as those found in the Caribbean. In the Meme deposit on Haiti ore occurs in skarn adjacent to the quartz diorite phase of a composite quartz monzonite-granodio-rite-quartz diorite pluton (Kesler, 1968). This deposit, with a K-Ar 66 m.y. date, is not included in Fig. 48 as a porphyry copper deposit because metallization is restricted largely to the intruded rocks. Although the intrusive rocks at the Meme deposit may contain sulfide near skarn contacts they are otherwise essentially unaltered. Porphyry molybdenum deposits as defined by Clarke (1972) have not been reported in the Caribbean area.

Complete automation of concentrator operations through computer control has been under increasing consideration by American engineers for several years. Although justification for full-scale automation of a mill must ultimately be economic- added profits exceeding instrumentation and development costs-the technical feasibility of automation will be determined by the availability of requisite, detailed knowledge of the various unit operations in the plant. This poses problems. BASIC PROBLEMS WHICH MUST BE CONSIDERED A hypothetical porphyry copper mill will be used here to illustrate these problems. Its flowsheet will involve: mining, crushing, storage, grinding and classification, flotation, product de-watering, and disposal.
