Although little information is available concerning small-scale equipment for dust collection in laboratories, it is possible to adapt standard equipment for laboratory use. Dust from laboratory processes may be collected by cyclone separators, filters, electrostatic separators, scrubbers, and settling chambers. IN recent years much attention has been given to recovery, treatment, and disposal of dusts discharged into the atmosphere from operations of industry. considerable data has been accumulated on both operation and design of dust-collector equipment for commercial installations. On the other hand, there is almost no published data on design and construction of small-scale equipment to handle dust problems that arise in the ore-dressing laboratory. Dust-collection equipment such as multiclones, single-cyclones, scrubbers, chemical and mechanical filters, settling chambers, and electrostatic separators has proved its efficiency for collecting dust in industry. In the laboratory, however, the engineer is faced with the problem of collecting small quantities of dust, inexpensively, without diverting the major effort from the metallurgical problem to the problem of collecting dust produced by the process. For most applications standard dust-collection equipment is too large for use in the laboratory; however, for control of dust in large working areas it is often possible to use a standard dust collector, such as an air filter, with branch ducts to eliminate a health hazard. For example, the well-furnished sample-preparation room containing small jaw crushers, rolls, and pulverizers, in addition to the riffles and screens necessary for preparation of samples, presents a perennial source of dust. The authors' experience has shown that a combination system consisting of overhead branch ducts to the individual equipment and floor ducts with grills, where applicable, connected to a central dust collector effectively removes dust generated in preparation of samples. Fig. 1 is a sketch of a downdraft dust-collector for table installation. Similar systems can be built with floor grids. For portable equipment such as laboratory vibrating screens this type of installation with a steel grill to support the heavy load is reasonably efficient. Overhead branch ducts to individual crushing and grinding equipment, although efficient, must be carefully controlled by dampers to prevent excess loss or a change in the composition of the sample. Change in sample composition can result from excess velocity, which causes selective removal of constituents of low specific gravity. Fig. 2' shows the theoretical effect of terminal velocity on spherical particles of different specific gravities in air and water under action of gravity. Fig. 3 shows the effect of air velocity on composition of CaCO, coal mixtures. Although the entrainment of dust particles in a moving air stream is the basic mechanism by which all dust-collection equipment functions, usually intake velocity of the dust-collection system must be controlled to prevent loss of part of the sample. As an example of what may happen when excess velocities are used, a mixture of 50 pct coal and 50 pct limestone was crushed to —10 mesh and fed to a pulverizer equipped with an overhead dust-collection system. Fig. 4 shows the overhead dust-collection equipment used in this test. The pulverizer was set to give a product 95 pct —100 mesh in two stages. Velocity of air passing over the lip of the pulverizer was measured with an anemometer. After grinding, the finished product was analyzed to show the amount of calcium carbonate present. Fig. 3 shows graphically the increase in calcium carbonate as velocity through the dust-collection duct was increased. These data show that at a velocity of 1 ft per sec little if any of the coal was entrained by the overhead draft. At the maximum velocity, about 6.5 ft per sec, approximately 7 pct more coal was entrained than calcium carbonate. From an operating standpoint, this problem can be remedied easily by dampering the line to control velocity. The lowest velocity commensurate with satisfactory dust control should be used to prevent excess loss and, in some cases, selective dust loss. Collection of Dust in Laboratory Processes As in industry, the engineer desires to collect efficiently the dust produced by processes being investigated on a laboratory scale. However, in the collection of laboratory dusts he is faced with two additional problems: 1—The volumes of gas and the quantity of dust that must be recovered are small when compared with the capacity of standard dust-collector equipment, which must be scaled down in design except for collection of dust from large pilot-plant operations. 2—In addition, because of the variety of problems studied in the process laboratory, the engineer cannot design today a dust collector that will meet the conditions imposed by the processes of tomorrow. Sometimes, therefore, he must compromise collection efficiency to minimize the cost of fabrication and the amount of time diverted from the metallurgical to the dust-control problem. For collection of dust from laboratory processes a cyclone separator, filters, electrostatic separators, scrubbers, and settling chambers can usually be adapted for small-scale operations. GOOD will is becoming recognized more and more as a necessary business asset, and a successful concern must have the good will not only of its customers and the public, but of its employees. Management -enlightened management-recognizes this and will go the limit to get it. Progress depends on cooperation, and in industry cooperation must be based on the acceptance by employ-ers and employees of some practical application of the principle that capital and labor are interdependent. Capital cannot exist without labor, and labor without capital is helpless. The development of each is depen-dent on the cooperation of the other. Confidence and good will are the foundation of every successful enter-prise, and these can be created only by securing a point of contact between employer and employee. We feel that one of the most effective agencies for promoting good will between employers and employees is through some well organized method of conference and have consequently adopted, to accomplish this, a plan of employee representation. The plan inaugurated by the Bethlehem Steel Co. about four years ago, which provides for the election by secret ballot of representatives by and from among the employees, has for its purpose three fundamentals; namely, to give the employees a voice in the determina-tion of the conditions under which they work, to furnish machinery for the prevention and adjustment of differ-ences between employees and management, and, so far as possible, to provide and foster continuous employment. The constitution and by-laws adopted take care of the detail in setting up machinery for the functioning of the representatives of both management and men, but the spirit with which the plan has been carried out and the results which have been accomplished are of far greater importance than the plan itself. The Bethlehem plan, which has been in operation since October, 1918, can no longer be classed as an experiment. The original by-laws provided for amend-ments and, as was anticipated, changes and improve-ments have been made from time to time by mutual agreement. The operation of the plan for over four years shows it to be fundamentally sound and that it must therefore be conceded a success.

THE hydrogen-steel system has received considerable attention in the past several years. Recent experiments in this laboratory have shown that another group of operations, namely, sanding and grinding,' must be added to the already well-estab- lished list of phenomena that cause hydrogen to permeate steel. Qualitative tests which have been made with a very sensitive ion-gage type of detector similar to that used by Norton,' showed that sanding a steel surface caused hydrogen permeation. A metal type 6~6 vacuum tube was used as the ion gage with an electrometer to measure the ion c~rrent.~ The protective enamel coating was removed from the tube.

ALL types of commercial phosphate rock produced throughout the world contain fluorine in quantities ranging from approximately 0.4 to 1.3 per cent in the Curacao and Christmas Island phosphates to 3.1 to 4.2 per cent in the phosphates of the United States and North Africa1. For a given type of rock, the fluorine content is usually roughly propor-tional to the phosphorus content. SIGNIFICANCE OF FLUORINE IN PHOSPHATE ROCK On the basis of chemical and X-ray diffraction studies, Hendricks and co-workers2 concluded that fluorapatite, Ca10F2(P04)6, is the essential phosphatic constituent of the commercial types of domestic phosphate rock. On the other hand, Bredig and co-workers3 have recently advanced the opinion, also based on X-ray diffraction studies, that the mineral phosphates usually contain carbon dioxide in the apatite lattice, and that the phosphate rocks of. the United States are really fluorcarbonate apatites. However, the domestic types of phosphate rock do not seem to differ greatly from coarsely crystalline fluorapatite in their behavior toward chemical reagents in general, and for the purpose of this paper it will suffice to consider fluorapatite as being the essential phosphatic constituent of these types of rock.

Karl L. Fetters moves to the front of the AIME organization this month as the 1964 President of the Institute. He will take the chair vacated by outgoing President Roger V. Pierce at the Annual Meeting in New York, already well-rehearsed in his forthcoming duties after a year of preparation as AIME President-Elect. Dr. Fetters is highly qualified for his new responsibilities on both the administrative and professional level. For the past five years, he has been vice president for research and development at The Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. in Ohio, where he has achieved wide recognition as an out- standing metallurgist and executive. A native of Alliance, Ohio, he obtained his early education in the public schools of his home town and displayed a singular precocity when he launched his professional career as a chemist for the Morgan Engineering Co. at the age of 16. His new career, however, was soon set aside in favor of four years of higher education at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, whence he emerged in 1931 with a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering. Surprisingly, and perhaps owing to the employment stringencies of the Depression years, the first job his new qualifications earned him was that of stationary engineer at the Cunningham Sanitarium in Cleveland. After two years of ministering to the mechanical ailments of this institution, Dr. Fetters relinquished his post for a more suitable one in the field of metallurgy.

THE practical importance of the phenomena of melting and freezing must have been recognized for a very long time. The difference between ice and water, for example, has had a profound influence on the history of mankind and the evolution of society. The possibility of melting a metal and allowing it to freeze in a mold of chosen shape has been an essential ingredient in our mastery of the art of shaping metals, and therefore in the evolution of the: machine age in which we find ourselves. The importance of melting and freezing, as applied to metals and alloys, has been so great, in fact, that empirical solutions have been found for the multitude of practical problems that have arisen. This approach has been so successful that relatively little attention has been directed to arriving at an understanding of the fundamentals of the processes. But metallurgy has come to a stage at which we may expect that some, at least, of the more complex problems that have not yet been solved (or perhaps even recognized) may be handled more effectively by scientific study, theoretical understanding, and logical experimentation than by trial and error. In this lecture, therefore, I propose to describe in outline what I think really happens when a metal freezes. In doing so I hope to explain many of the phenomena which have been observed, and in particular to account for the structures that are obtained in actual ingots and castings. The basic problem, to which this lecture represents a tentative partial answer, is this: a mass of metal, containing known proportions of various elements, is melted, heated to a given temperature, and then allowed to freeze under specified conditions. What will be the "structure" of the resulting metal? The term structure includes: 1—crystal size, shape, and orientations, 2—distribution of chemical elements, and 3-—shape, including cracks, cavities, pores, etc. The Solid-Liquid Interface We will first consider what takes place if a single crystal of a metal in the form of a rod is heated, not uniformly, but so that one end is hotter than the other. If this heating process is continued long enough, the hotter end will eventually melt; we will suppose that the rod is in a containing vessel so that the molten metal does not run away, Fig. 1. When some of the metal has melted, we have some solid, some liquid, and an interface or surface of contact between them. If the source of heat is now removed, the interface will move so that some of the liquid freezes, and if the supply of heat is suitably adjusted the interface will remain at rest. This very simple arrangement allows us to study the basic processes of melting and freezing, and if we fully understand this simple case, we may be able to account for what takes place under practical conditions where the heat does not all flow in the same direction, and where the heat flow is determined not by a controllable source of heat but by the heat capacity and temperature of metal and mold, and by the heat loss from the mold surface. The solid-liquid interface is evidently the region of the greatest interest to us; on one side of it there is crystalline solid, and on the other, liquid. In the solid, each atom has a well defined position, around which it vibrates as a result of thermal agitation. It only leaves this position in the relatively rare event of a "diffusion jump." The liquid is much less systematically organized. The atoms are about as far from their neighbors as in the solid, but the arrangement is much less systematic and is continuously changing. The solid and the liquid are represented diagrammatically in Fig. 2. The average energy of the atoms in the liquid is greater than in the solid by an amount that corresponds to the latent heat of fusion, i.e., the amount of heat that has to be supplied to convert unit mass of solid into liquid at the same temperature. The Two Processes As has recently been shown by Jackson and Chalmers,3 many of the features of the processes of freezing and melting can be understood if it is assumed that a continuous and rapid interchange of atoms between solid and liquid always takes place at a solid-liquid interface." It is necessary to con- sider two distinct processes, that of melting, in which atoms leave the surface of the solid and become part of the liquid, and the converse process,

In 1943, Illinois produced 82,256,000 bbl. of oil, or 5.5 per cent of the total for the United States, and ranked sixth in the nation in oil production. This represents a decline of 23 per cent from 1942, when the total Illinois production was 106,ggo,o~~ bbl. and Illinois ranked fifth. The daily average production for 1943 was approximately 225,000 bbl. The operating plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. is situated at Port Pirie in South Australia and it treats to finality the whole output of lead concentrates from the mines of The Zinc Corporation Ltd., North Broken Hill Ltd., and aroken Hill South Ltd. at Broken Hill, New South Wales. Lead bearing ores from other sources are also purchased for treatment and lead scrap and residues are treated on a toll charge basis. The present output of the plant is approximately 200000 tonnes of refined lead per annum and there is a substantial production of by-products including refined silver, gold, cadmium, antimonial lead alloys, copper matte and sulphuric acid. Recently the Company commenced the production of zinc by slag fuming and electrolysis from a six million ton dump of lead blast furnace slag, which has been accumulating at Port Pirie for over fifty years. The slag fuming plant contains two furnaces of conventional design, but features a high degree of pre-heat for the blast air and this is obtained by the use of all-metal recuperators. The raw zinc oxide fume produced by the plant is roasted in a rotary kiln prior to treatment in the leaching and electrolysis sections, which follow conventional practice for nigh current density plants. Present output is approximately 36000 tonnes of electrolytic zinc per annum.

The notched-bar impact test has proved worth while in certain applications as a test for control of the quality or the heat-treatment of steel. In view of the serious thought that even so simple a test as the tensile test has evoked during the past years, it is not surprising that the notched-bar impact test should have inspired much experimental work. The correlation of the great number of data has not been successful, although steady progress has been made toward a better understanding of this test. Progress has been made, especially, in the isolation of the effects of the many variables that control the results. The stress system imposed on a specimen with a notch is so complicated and unpredictable that no simple evaluation of the test has been possible. Because of this uncertainty, many engineers hesitate to use the notched-bar impact test, and this attitude may well continue until a better understanding of the effects of the variables in the test are available. Without doubt, any additional data that may be presented should be accompanied by as complete a description of the - details of test as possible, so that it may be added to the general fund of information that is to serve as the basis for the theory of the notched-bar impact test. The many factors that may control the test results have been pointed out repeatedly. The importance of the effect of the type and dimensions of the specimen has been recognized. Most of the work reported by American investigators has been limited to small-size (Charpy) specimens tested as a simple beam; two types of notches (Fig. I) have been commonly used. Considerable data have also been presented by many investigators using a small specimen tested as a cantilever beam; this commonly being called the Izod test. Here, however, a shear component of stress makes the stress system even more complex than that present in the simple beam type of test, hence a critical analysis is difficult. Much work has also been reported by investigators using the tension type of specimen. A second variable that must be controlled is the testing temperature. An indication that the tests were performed at room temperature is not sufficient, since in many steels a variation of a few degrees in the actual testing temperature may be sufficient to give an entirely different range of results. Other factors, such as the composition and condition of the material being tested and the speed of test, should also be considered. The basic aims of the drilling and blasting program at the Mission mine are fourfold: 1. To provide 100,000+ tpd of broken alluvium and rock material for shovel excavation; 2. To obtain fragmentation that will permit the most efficient digging of the broken material and provide an acceptable crusher feed; 3. To conduct the drilling and blasting program in accordance with approved safety procedures; 4. To obtain these objectives at the lowest possible cost. The material that is mined from the pit is divided into four different rock types and the overlying alluvium. Each of these materials is broken by using procedures tailored to its individual characteristics.

The Mogollon mining district is in the southwestern part of New Mexico near the southern end of the Mogollon range, from which the district takes its name. The town of Mogollon is but 371/2 miles in an air line northeast of Clifton, Ariz. The air-line distance from Silver City is 521/2 miles and from Tyrone, 57 miles. Supplies are transported by motor truck from Silver City. The distance by road is 75 miles, half of which is an improved highway of modern construction. Transportation has always been a large item of expense in carrying on operations in the district. Valuable ore is said to have been discovered in the Mogollon Mountains as early as 1870 but the first regular prospecting was carried on in 1875, by James C. Cooney, a sergeant from Fort Bayard. His discovery of rich silver-copper ores in the region of Mineral Creek led to the establishment of the Camp of Cooney. Remote from any settlements where there was a semblance of law and order, and harassed by the Apaches, development was slow and nearly 10 years elapsed before the village of Mogollon was established on Silver Creek. Prospecting in this section of the district had disclosed the outcrops of several promising veins containing silver-gold ores. Among the early claims located were the Last Chance, Top and Confidence, on what has proved to be the most productive vcin in the district. To the end of 1922, the Last Chance and Top claims had produced approximately 600,000 tons of ore and nearly 200,000 tons had come from the Confidence group of claims. The total value of the ore produced from this vein alone has amounted to about $9,600,000 in silver and gold. The Fanney vein was developed later and during its most active period of production contributed more than half of the output of the district. Other important locations, though far less productive than the above, were the Maude S, Deep Down, the Deadwood and the Pacific.

Longhole underground drilling has been carried on in the Tri-State area at various times over the past 35 years or more. W. F. Netzeband reported on this topic in 1926 and in 1930. More recently it has been found that in certain areas of the Picher field, Oklahoma, and under certain conditions, the jackleg or jumbo-mounted drifters can be used more economically and to greater advantage than surface churn drillholes for prospecting. To understand better the problems involved in Eagle-Picher's longhole prospecting program it would be helpful to cover the geologic criteria affecting it. Much has been written about the geology of the Picher field. A more complete description than that given here can be found in a recent paper by J. P. Lyden.

The phase identification results on several Mg-base alloys are presented. These results have been correlated with strength data and microstructural studies to indicate that carbide dispersion may contribute significantly to raising the recrystallization temperature and strength of Mo alloys. Evidence is presented to show that the degree of carbide dispersion, and hence the extent of strengthening, is governed by the "metal/carbon" ratio which, in turn, depends on both the carbon content and the presence of stable -carbide-forming alloying elements. IN recent years, Mo-base alloys containing small additions of C, Ti, and/or Zr have been developed, which exhibit much higher recrystallization temperature and strength than those of unalloyed Mo. The superiority of these alloys undoubtedly results from simultaneous operation of more than one strengthening mechanism. In the present paper, the strengthening effect of carbide dispersion will be discussed. Although the role of carbide dispersion is being increasingly recognized, the nature of the carbides has, to the author's knowledge, not been well es- tablished. In Table I are presented some of the phase identification results on representative Mo alloys. These results have been obtained by X-ray diffraction of residues electrolytically extracted from an ethyl alcohol solution containing 7 pct HC1.
