Morton Webb, Germiston, Transvaal, South Africa (communication to the Secretary*):—The experience of Mr. Boeh-mer in the Leadville district and his reputation as an engineer assure the interest of anything he may write on the ore-bodies of that district; and all engineers who have operated in Leadville will agree that the theory of the origin of the Leadville deposits, as given by Mr. Emmons in his famous monograph, does not adequately explain the genesis of all the deposits. The solutiou of the problem does not, however, appear to be quite so simple as Mr. Boehmer would make it; and the advance pamphlet issued by the U. S. Geological Survey, pending the completion of the main report, shows that there is still much ground for controversy. No doubt the later eruptive0 had a greater influence on the deposition of the ore-bodies than was thought at the time of the first investigation by the Survey; but it has always appeared to me that the influence exerted by these dikes mas more in the nature of a physical than a chemical one. The weight of evidence in recent years is mostly in the direction of ascension rather than lateral secretion; and one of the strongest evidences is the fact that most of the ore-bodies lie under one of the comparatively impervious layers which help to make up the structure of these hills.

The life of refractory linings in rotary cement kilns can be shortened by uneven or inadequate support of the kiln and its shell and by variations in the conditions of operation. Alteration of these factors may, according to their nature, bring about mechanical deterioration of the lining or promote chemical attack. Chemical attack has been described elsewhere. The distortion of cement kilns has been discussed in a general manner by Rochow, who indicates the amount of distortion which may occur in an unlined shell, and by Rosenblad; who states that the deformations of the shell are greatest above the trunnions. The present article indicates the extent of the distortion of a kiln to an oval shape in certain selected positions and the deviation from a straight line of the kiln along its length between two supports. The cement kiln is a long, hollow, rotating cylinder consisting of steel plates which may be either welded or riveted together. This shell is supported on tires, frequently 60 ft apart, which roll on trunnions. The large mass of the kiln causes distortion of its cross-section; it becomes slightly oval, i.e., diameters lengthen as they become horizontal and shorten as they become vertical. There is also a tendency for the shell to bow between supporting tires; this bowing may be upwards or downwards depending on the position of the weight forces and the supports. The extent of the deviations from the ideal kiln shape was investigated.

A study utilizing neutron diffraction, electrical resistance, and chemical extraction has been carried out to clarify the chromium-rich part of the miscibility gap previously proposed for this system. This gap appears to be more symmetrical than previously supposed and is very flat. This flatness is believed to be the result of a cooperative phenomenon perhaps of magnetic origin; in particular, it is believed that the chromium-rich phase is antiferromagnetic. The presence of antiferromagnetism is believed to result in an additional strengthening mechanism very sinzilar to that for ordered precipitates. Likewise, it is proposed that the quenched alloys which are known to be ferromagnetic have antiferromagnetic regions which accounts for the maximum in hardness around 75 pct Cr. It is also believed that the existence of antiferromagnetism in other alloys of transition elements might explain some of their anomolous characteristics. One of our members, in Colombia, has written the following interesting account of his experience in trying to remit his dues to the Institute. "Last year I was away at the end of the year and on my return I was unable to obtain a draft in Honda until April, I believe. To avoid delay this year I remitted cash, early in January, to a friend in Bogota who I imagined could sell or procure for me various small drafts to cover my annual subscriptions. After many weeks' delay, I was informed that he could not get them for me and was remitting the cash to Honda where they were obtainable. After another long delay, I was informed that no one in Honda would sell drafts or checks for small amounts. Eventually I found a friend who was willing to oblige me in the matter and at once forwarded the amount."

Drilling in Central Texas during 1933 was confined, for the most part, to the search for new serpentine plugs. Bastrop County led in this particular activity, with 50 completions during the 12 months' period, 12 of which were productive. Only one new field was opened in Central Texas during the year, it being known as "Hilbig" (Bastrop County) and was discovered by the Humble Oil & Refining Co. The finding of commercial production in the serpentine at 2500 ft. led to further search in this and surrounding counties, but without success. Bexar County actually provided the greatest amount of drilling but the activity was limited to shallow development from 400 to 2000 ft. The Edwards limestone pay, which has been such a factor in past years, received but slight attention during 1933. Unsuccessful exploration was carried on in Lee and Burleson counties. With the exception of Freestone County, the Woodbine sand area was given even less consideration. This county, because of its close proximity to Anderson and Leon counties, saw a very active leasing campaign and several important tests drilled. In Central Texas, 252 wells were completed in 1933, and of this number 52, or 21 per cent, were productive. Hilbig Field The discovery well, Humble Oil & Refining Company's Annie Hassler No. 1, was completed Feb. 16, 1933, for an initial production of 65 bbl. the first hour, through tubing and 1/2-in. choke. The production was found in serpentine at 2468 ft. and tested 37.2" A.P.I. gravity. Twelve producing wells were drilled during the year and served to indicate that not more than 300 acres would comprise the entire field. Daily production at the end of the year was 775 bbl., although the field potential was 18,240 bbl. daily through 1-in. choke. The field adapts itself to pressure maintenance, and this scientific handling is being undertaken by the Humble Oil & Refining Co. through one injection well. It is the only area in the district where work of this nature is under way. Proration of Oil The more stringent application of proration in 1933 did not affect materially the producing fields in Central Texas. This is accounted for

A great deal has been written of late regarding the loss of silver in assaying; very discordant results have been published by different writers, and much uncertainty exists concerning even approximate losses in a careful determination of silver, as represented by a fire-assay. In the present paper it has been the aim of the writer to determine as accurately as possible the losses sustained by silver, under certain specified conditions, during the process of cupellation. Such losses are well known to be due to absorption by the cupel and volatilization. The conditions, however, which govern these losses are not believed by the writer to be so well understood. The most important of these are : 1. The effect of variable quantities of silver used. 2. The temperature of cupellation. 3. The character and quantity of impurities in the lead button. 4. The weight of the lead button. 5. The nature of the cupel. The following experiments were made for the purpose of demonstrating, as nearly as possible, the total loss of silver in cupellation under the most favorable conditions to be obtained in commercial assaying. Chemically pure silver and pure lead were taken. The latter was obtained from test-lead, first melted into a bar, from which pieces of the desired weight were cut and accurately weighed. The experiments recorded in this paper were planned by the writer, but executed throughout by Mr. J. N. Walker, whose ability as an accurate, careful and painstaking assayer is too well known and recognized throughout the West to require any further endorsement from me.

INTRODUCTION The principal objective of this chapter is to provide guidance in understanding and making effective use of published financial statements of mining companies. Although financial statements only represent a gathering together of information relevant to an enterprise's financial position and results of operations, they increasingly reflect the complexities of the modern day business environment. In the mining industry, a wide variety of accounting practices have evolved to deal with the unique aspects of the business in the absence of authoritative accounting pronouncements from standard-setting bodies. Given such complexities and divergent practices, financial statements of mining companies are not easily understood and cannot be used effectively as a tool in decision-making without a basic knowledge of fundamental accounting concepts, generally accepted accounting principles and their application in the mining industry. As such, this chapter is not restricted to a discussion of the accounting for the unique aspects of the mining industry. These aspects are dealt with at length but the text also includes a discussion of general accounting concepts and practices which have wide application in the mining industry. Frequent references are made in the text to international practices and to specific rules and requirements of individual countries. In this respect, the scope is restricted to four major mining environments, Canada, the UK, the US and Australia, all of which have made significant contributions to the development of generally accepted accounting principles. FINANCIAL STATEMENTS - ELEMENTS AND CONCEPTS Financial statements were originally a stewardship report to owners to satisfy them that management had given a proper account of the resources with which it had been entrusted. Today, the number of users of financial statements has expanded to include the following groups: - shareholders, present and prospective; - lenders, present and prospective; - financial analysts; - regulatory authorities; - taxing authorities; - labour unions and employees; and - creditors and customers. The expectations of these user groups differ. For example, investors and lenders require information that will indicate the adequacy of their security and the profitability of the enterprise; taxing authorities will be concerned with the concept of income; labour unions and employees will focus on the profitability of the enterprise. Ground Rules for Preparing Financial Statements Responsibility for Financial Statements Financial statements are the representations of management. This may strike the reader as a rather obvious statement. It is important to remember, however, the role of judgment in accounting. Notwithstanding the promulgation of accounting standards in the developed countries, considerable flexibility remains in the selection of accounting practices and methods and in their presentation. Arguably, there is more flexibility in the mining industry as few countries have developed standards to deal with its unique aspects. Accordingly, financial statements are as much a product of management's perspective and philosophy as they are a compliance document.

In central Colorado is a great belt of intrusive porphyry nearly 100 miles long (160 km.), extending from the Clear Creek district on the north to Aspen on the south, which includes many of the well known mining camps of the state. Near the southern end of this belt, at Leadville, the occurrence of these intrusives is most marked, resulting in intensive mineralization and the formation of a great variety of large orebodies. During the past 40 years, Leadville has been a steady producer of gold, silver, lead, zinc, manganese, iron, and bismuth, in the forms of sulfide, carbonate and oxide ores. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss pyrite alone, which, under present economic conditions, is valuable chiefly for its sulfur contents. The ore-bearing formation of the Leadville district consists of two beds of limestone separated by a layer of quartzite. The upper limeatone is carbonaceous, and is known locally as the blue limestone. It varies in thickness from 50 to 300 ft. (15 to 91 m.). The lower limestone is Silurian, known locally as white limestone, and is about the same thickness as the upper bed. Underneath the Silurian limestone is a layer of Cambrian quartzite from 100 to 250 ft. (30 to 76 m.) thick resting on Archean granite, which forms the limit of ore deposition. As a rule, there is a sheet of white porphyry above the upper, or blue limestone; a sheet of gray porphyry is associated with the blue limestone, either in or below it, but the porphyries are not so regular as the quartzites and limestones and are not always found in their expected positions. Throughout the district there is an elaborate system of faults and intrusive porphyry dikes, which have an important bearing on ore deposits. The writer has seen two or three orebodies which were not closely associated with either a fault or a porphyry dike, but if the minor fractures and water courses are considered as part of the fault system it is safe to say that all orebodies are directly traceable to one or both of these causes. The distribution of pyrite in the Leadville district is quite general; but, eliminating the smaller bodies and those containing prohibitive quantities of zinc or lead, and considering only the larger deposits commercially valuable for their sulfur, we find the chief pyritic ore-bodies extending in a zone approximately 6000 ft. (1828 m.) long and several hundred feet wide, from the Yak and Moyer, on the south; through the Louisville, Greenback, Mahala, Adams, and Wolftone, on Carbonate Hill; across Yankee Hill, and into the Quadrilateral, Denver City, and Tip Top, on Fryer Hill.

FOUR or five years ago an investigation was initiated to study and develop basic information on llquid metal fuels for future power nuclear reactors. The objective was to find fluid forms of uranium (solutions or dispersions) in low melting alloys. A summary of the different fuels was presented in a recent article by Teitel, Gurinsky, and Bryner.' The combination of uranium and bismuth, with its low thermal neutron cross section and low melting point, is of basic interest to the development of these fuels. Most of the previous effort on the U-Bi phase diagram was done under security regulation. Ahmann and Baldwin' reported their findings on the U-Bi system in 1945. Their results indicated that the phase diagram had at least two compounds and possibly one more. UBi, and UBi were established by chemical analyses of residues after high temperature centrifugation of alloys. UBi, decomposed peritectically at1980°C and there were signs of another reaction above that. UBi melted at a very high temperature, and there were also signs of a monotectic at high temperatures in high uranium alloys. The solubility of uranium in liquid bismuth has received attention by three groups of authors: Bareis,X ayes and Gordon,' and Ahmann and Baldwin.' The latest and most widely accepted data is that of Bareis, and it is included in Fig. 1 along with new data at higher temperatures. Brewer et al." and Ferro"'' have used X-ray diffraction to determine the number and crystal structure of the compounds. Brewer identified the structure of UBi to be a simple NaCl cubic structure having a cell edge of 6.364A. The density of the compound was calculated to be 11.52 g per cu cm. Two other unindexed patterns were presented as possibly belonging to two other compounds. Ferro agreed with Brewer on the crystal structure of UBi and identified the structure of UBi, and U,Bi,. The intermetallic compound UBi, has a tetragonal cell with a = 4.445A and c = 8.908A. The density of the compound was determined and the number of atoms per cell (six atoms) was calculated. The X-ray density reported was 12.35 g per cu cm. The compound UsBir was treated in a similar way and it was reported to have a cubic structure 9.35A on an edge and to contain 28 atoms per cell. The density was given as 12.59 g per cu cm. Teitel reported that there was a compound UaBi, and no UBi, compound. (The difference in the compositions is 3.3 pct U.) Although a large number of X-ray photograms of cold-rolled steel have been published, two circumstances have led to the experimental work reported in this paper. The first is that no complete study, making use of the pole-figure method of Weverl, has been made of cold-rolled low-carbon steel. Wever has published pole figures of mild steel subjected to plane parallel deformation1, 2 and undoubtedly he has applied the method to cold-rolled mild steel, but the authors have not found these data published. Kurdjumow and Sachs3 have applied the method to the study of rolling and recrystallization textures in electrolytic iron; their results will be referred to later. The reason for this dearth of papers using the pole-figure method is obvious; a greater number of photograms and more analytical work (although this work is quite simple and straightforward) are required to construct a pole figure than most investigators have felt worth while, despite the fact that no other method of which the authors are aware will satisfactorily depict the orientations of the crystallites in a polycrystalline aggregate. The second circumstance that led to the work reported in this paper was the appearance of a paper by Wayne A. Sisson4 on the same subject. In his valuable study of the factors influencing the development of preferred orientations in cold-rolled mild steel, Sisson made one observation that required confirmation; that is, that at some stage of the rolling process the type of preferred orientation changed from the type that gives a photogram characterized as a "six-point" X-ray pattern to that known as a "four-point" pattern. A similar observation had been made by Tam-mann and Heinzel5, who studied the orientations developed in the rolling of steel by the specular reflection of light from the etched surface of rolled samples. These workers also found that the type of preferred orientation changed during the rolling process. The authors had some difficulty in seeing how this behavior could be consistent with modern views on the genesis of preferred orientations, particularly with those of Wever2

The subject paper presents the results of a reservoir behavior analyzer study of the pressure-production performance of five Ellenburger pools in West Texas. These five pools are Wheeler, TXL, Andector, Embar, and Martin. This laboratory has also made reservoir behavior analyzer studies in this area and arrived at substantially the same conclusions. Although the principal results of the studies made in this laboratory are confirmed by the results in the subject paper, there are certain points of difference. The points of difference are (1) the subject paper includes the Martin pool in the common aquifer, whereas our studies indicate that it is not, and (2) the subject paper concludes that the effective aquifer is considerably smaller than that derived from studies made in this laboratory. In terms of reservoir analyzer data, our rejection of Martin is based on the inability to obtain a satisfactory match of the pressure curve when Martin is considered as lying within the common aquifer. A satisfactory match was possible, however, when Martin was run as an isolated pool. This indicates that the pressure disturbance resulting from production at Martin had not reached Embar, Andector, TXL, or Wheeler at the time of our study. A similar situation exists relative to Dollarhide. In tern of geological data, our rejection of Martin is based on the presence of a faulted zone between Martin and Embar. This condition is indicated in Fig. 4 and again in Fig. 10 of the subject report. If a permeable connection between Martin and the other fields does exist, it is probably by way of a detour around this fault. The second point of difference between the two studies is illustrated by a comparison of Fig. 4 of the subject paper with Eg. A. Fig. A is obtained from an internal report on one of the studies made by this laboratory. It will be noted that the area indicated in Fig. 4 is roughly that marked "Pool Unit" in Fig. A. The additional portion of the aquifer shown in Fig. A was simulated on the reservoir analyzer by means of the water drive network. A satisfactory pressure match could not be obtained without this additional network. The differences involved here stem from a more fundamental consideration concerning reservoir analyzer operating techniques. The true source of these differences in reported results cannot at this time be determined because of the incompleteness of the subject paper. It is not stated, for instance, whether the pressure match was induced by altering the field resistance or the field capacitance, or both. Changing analyzer

The phenomenon of recovery of cold-worked metals is interesting not only because of its practical importance but also because of its fundamental significance in solid state reactions. Although extensive investigations1,2 have already been made in an attempt to discover the mechanics of the recovery process, many of the observations have not yet been satisfactorily correlated to provide a completely consistent model for the process. The wide differences in the recovery rates of various properties can be cited as a typical example of one of the difficulties that are encountered. Frequently, for example, the electrical resistance will have almost completely recovered before any recovery in tensile strength can be detected. Of course, such differences in the recovery rates of different properties might be explained by assuming that each property is a unique function of the work-hardened state, and consequently each property exhibits its own unique recovery rate. The assumption that different properties are uniquely related to the work-hardened state cannot be denied. On the other hand, the properties that recover at different rates often exhibit more or less parallel changes upon work-hardening. This suggests that the microstructural changes attending recovery are not exactly the reverse of the changes attending work-hardening. Several types of imperfections must be postulated in order to account for this apparent anomaly. The different recovery rates for various properties, then, are due to the different recovery rales of the type of imperfection to which each property is most sensitive as well as the unique dependence of each property on the cold- worked state. This concept assumes that a simple model of the work-hardened state consisting only of one type of imperfection, such as Taylor's type of dislocation patterns, is inadequate to cope with the diversified phenomena attending work-hardening and recovery. Although current models for the work-hardened state are not useful for describing all aspects of the recovery process, the general trends of the recovery of each postulated type of imperfection as a function of time and temperature should be at least qualitatively deducible from the rather well developed laws of kinetics of reactions in the solid state. Consequently, recovery data might prove useful for elucidating some aspects of the complexities of the work-hardened state of metals. A preliminary attempt to study work-hardening by investigating recovery rates of cold-worked metals is outlined in the following pages of this report. Experimental Procedure Many properties recover when cold-worked metals are annealed below their recrystallization temperature. Therefore, electrical resistivity, thermal electromotive force, X ray diffraction line widths, X ray diffraction line intensities, elastic spring back, density and other physical and chemical properties have been used to study the recovery process. Major interest, however, has generally been directed toward the recovery of the mechanical properties such as hardness, yield strength, and tensile strength. But a search of the literature suggests that the effect of recovery on the true stress-true strain curve has been neglected, in spite of the current recognition of the fundamental importance of such an investigation. An investigation on the effect of recovery treatment on the true stress-true strain curves in tension, therefore, was undertaken in the present study. Commercially pure aluminum (99. + pet Al) in the form of 0.100 in. thick rolled sheet of 2S-O aluminum alloy was selected as the material for this investigation because rather extensive correlatable data are already available on the recovery of some of its properties. Tensile specimens having a 6 in. long gauge section and a uniform reduced section width of 0.500 in. were machined from the sheet in accordance with a design that has previously been reported.3 All specimens were selected with their axes aligned in the rolling direction. In order to eliminate the effects of previous work-hardening and the effects of machining, the specimens were annealed for 15 min. at 750°F before testing. During tensile testing the loads were measured by means of a proving ring (sensitive to 1/2 lb) in series with the specimen.4 Strains were determined from the extension of a rack and pinion strain gauge sensitive to a strain of + 0.0001. INTRODUCTION In all cave mining operations waste is drawn mixed in the ore, hauled, hoisted and milled. This waste usually contains some mineral which partly covers some of the costs of mining and milling it, but it still re- presents a loss of profits as the production rate from the mine is matched to the mill capacity - every tonne of waste milled replaces a tonne of profitable ore. Draw control aims to reduce the amount of waste drawn and to increase the amount of ore recovered. It is also used to regulate the grade of ore flowing to the mill and in block cave blocks to prevent potential stress build- up on the major apexes above grizzly drifts. This paper summarises what has been learnt about draw control in the forty years that cave mining methods have been used in the three largest underground chrysotile asbestos mines in the southern hemisphere. The four mining methods to which draw control has been applied are: a. Block caving. b. Shrinkage with overburden caving. c. Sublevel caving. d. Open stoping. Open stoping has been included because on a number of occasions severe falls from the back and side of these open stopes have occurred. Without full records of where and when ore is blasted, when and how much ore has been drawn from each of the drawpoints, it would be impossible to analyse the migration of ore and fallen waste in the stope. Several problems peculiar to chrysotile asbestos ore bodies affect the practice of draw control. Heterogeneous fragmentation, cavities, side pressures and the interaction of stresses in the caved ore affect the migration of ore under draw. Fibre is normally not developed uniformly throughout the ore bodies, values vary from place to place but there is usually a general decrease upwards and the hangingwall contact is an economic limit. The immediate hangingwall rock frequently looks like the ore body hostrock and is difficult to recognise in a drawpoint, and cannot be used as the marker for stopping draw. During caving or shrinkage, a large proportion of fibre becomes detached from the host rock and re- ports in the fines, which migrate differently to the larger rocks. The fines are not sticky, and flow easily if loose and dry, but compacted, the fibre and rock fines con- solidate the ore. During draw the proportion of fines in the ore varies considerably, as fines either flow relatively freely between the large rocks or become trapped and compacted above large rocks or hangups. This creates a large sampling error in drawpoint grade assessments, whether done visually or by bulk sampling, unless the assessments are done frequently. The method of draw control used is to regulate the draw rate in an attempt to lower the ore-waste interface as evenly as possible, and to finally stop working the drawpoint when a calculated tonnage has been drawn.

The consumption of lead for batteries in some western countries and Japan amounts to 870,000 T. annually. Battery life is 2-3 years. Therefore after a short time a considerable quantity of lead flows back to smelters. The production of lead from scrap batteries is discussed from the following points of view: 1. Separation of the acid contained in the batteries. 2. Separation of the components which are free of lead from the components containing lead, e.g. cases, separators. 3. Separation of metallic lead from lead compounds. 4. Avoidance of manual-work. A process has been developed and perfected at a plant, which began operation in 1965. The procedure consists essentially of the following steps: 1. Breaking the cases and removing the acid. 2. Crushing the batteries in an impact mill. 3. Screening off separators. 4. Separation of slurry. 5. Gravity separation of metal and organic material. The plant has a one-shift capacity of -24,000 T. batteries/year.

Stress measurements taken at Climax, El Teniente, Henderson, Lakeshore and Urad mines indicate that the deposits cited are generally subject to an inclined stress field that can be highly anisotropic. The horizontal stresses vary significantly between deposits and exceed the measured vertical stresses at Henderson and El Teniente mines. Experience at Henderson, Lakeshore and Urad mines is used to suggest a relationship between cavability and the premining stress. In poorly fractured, high strength rock masses, high stresses can assist the caving process. In well fractured, low strength rock masses, caving is ensured by breakage along fracture planes. The relationship between ground weight and the premining stress is also investigated. Ground weight problems appear to be most related to the competence of the ground rather than the magnitude of the premining stress as supported by experience at Climax and El Teniente mines. Recent developments in block caving favor the extraction of poorly fractured, high stressed rock. Accompanying the development of these deposits are new problems such as rock bursts. These pose particular problems to mine designers in that no experience currently exists in combatting rock burst problems at block caving mines.

THE results are presented of an investigation to discover the fundamental atomic conditions existing in Corson's high-copper alloys hardenable by means of silicide solution and reprecipitation. The study attracted the writer because it offered a very convenient example of the general type of hardenable alloys exemplified by duralumin. Sykes' iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys and the hardenable lead-antimony. SUMMARY OF RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS In brief, the investigation shows that very perfect crystallinity exists in the solid solutions prepared at high temperature to contain as much dissolved silicide as possible. The lattice parameter of copper is altered very little by the amount of cobalt, nickel or chromium, and silicon dissolved. The hardening by drawing at a temperature to initiate precipitation of excess silicon and metal produces a remarkable change in the atomistics of the solid solution. The old perfection of crystallinity in the solid solution is destroyed and the new atomic spacings are of variable magnitude even in one grain, and a condition in a measure resembling that found in martensite is observed. Were no particles whatever precipitated by the drawing action, still ample causes for hardness would be in evidence in the solid solution alone. The lack of plane continuity in the crystal grains would oppose slip in a very effective manner. Complete annealing restores the crystalline perfection in large measure. In these alloys even the most sensitive methods failed to reveal the characteristic pattern of the silicide precipitated by the anneal, but this was largely to be expected as the amount is relatively small.
