As the reservoir rises behind an arch dam, it presses the arch into the canyon walls and valley floor. To compute the stresses, deflections, and arch reactions, it is necessary to know how much the rock deforms under the combined loads of gravity, temperature, and water. Under sustained loading for a period of time, the rock continues to deform or "creep" slightly, causing changes in the stresses and shape of the arch. Under reduced loading, the elastic arch tends to resume its unstrained position and it is important to know that the rock will follow it and maintain tight contact along the abutment. It is, therefore, important to know the "set" characteristic of the rock. Past attempts to define load-deformation properties of rock, including creep and set, have largely l been limited to laboratory test of intact cores and in-situ jacking test utilizing bearing plates 2 to 3 ft in diam. In both cases, a uniaxial load has been applied to a volume of rock too small to fully reflect the influence of cracks, joint systems, foliation, and other inherent weaknesses within the rock mass. This chapter describes a large radial jacking test which more nearly duplicates the action of an arch dam by penetrating the load deep into the rock mass, bringing into play more of the factors which contribute to prototype deformation. Results obtained from the large radial test are compared with those from smaller uniaxial test. A current study of the growth kinetics of k (hcp) plates in a Cu-Si (fcc)' has generated a requirement for data 02 the chemical interdiffusion coefficient in a (termed D,) as a function of temperature at the composition of the a/a + k pJase boundary. Rhines and Mehl 2 have determined D, as a function of composition at lower silicon contents by making Matano analyses of concentration-penetration curves. However, the accelerating increase in B, which they demonstrated as the phase boundary composition is approached at constant temperature and the rapidly diminishing accuracy of this analysis as the limiting compositions of a diffusion couple are approached (the silicon-rich component of their couples contained appreciably less silicon than is permitted by the solubility limit) indicate that the required information cannot be safely obtained by extrapolation of their data. Although the quite different method employed in this study is not exact, it will be shown that the approximations made are not serious ones, particularly from the viewpoint of the prgcipal application anticipated for these data. D, was determined from the migration kinetics of the a :k boundaries formed in sandwich-type diffusion couples produced by welding a block of high-purity copper to opposite sides of a cube (* in. on edge) of homogenized high-purity Cu-5.82 wt pct Si alloy. The alloy is pure k in the temperature range employed. The surfaces of the couple components which were normal to the diffusion direction were machined accurately flat and parallel, lightly polished, and carefully cleaned. Welding was then accomplished by means of the vacuum-encapsulated pressure jig technique previously employed.3 Welding was always conducted at the intended diffusion temperature; thus the welding anneal also served as the first diffusion anneal. Subsequent diffusion anneals were performed in evacuated Vycor capsules. Following the welding anneal, one of the surfaces parallel to the diffusion direction was machined, ground, and polished flat; additional material was removed from this surface after each diffusion anneal in order to avoid any effects of composition changes. After etching,4 the average distance between a : k boundaries was measured by means of a traveling microscope with an accuracy (per measurement) of better than 1 p. Satisfactory results were obtained at four temperatures in the range 775° to 655°C; attempts to obtain data at two lower temperatures were unsuccessful, evidently as the result of the interference of surface contamination during the welding process.

IN 1948 the U. S. Bureau of Mines began a three-phase program to evaluate the extent and quality of U. S. coking coal: 1) a factual appraisal of known recoverable reserves in beds of mineable thickness, 2) a study of preparation characteristics, and 3) a study of carbonization properties. A previous paper presented the methods used in assessing reserves.' Although this investigation is only partly completed, data on coking properties of the Pittsburgh district coals are now available. The results are presented in this article. When coals are selected for manufacture of metallurgical coke more factors must be considered than for any other major use, as no basic industry requires coal of such high quality and uniformity. This is particularly true in the Pittsburgh district, where blast furnace practice is based on use of cokes from high quality coals. Although it is true that inferior coals are carbonized in other industrial areas, both here and abroad, the Pittsburgh coals are the best economically obtainable in the required tonnages, even though they are not the most desirable for metallurgical use. In the general evaluation of suitability of coals for coke making, particular attention is given to: 1) reserve, 2) ash and sulfur content, 3) inherent properties of forming strong, well fused coke, 4) expanding characteristics, and 5) blending properties. Items 1 and 2 are covered in detail in the first two phases of the survey, and coking behavior is considered in items 3 through 5. Problems is Coal Evaluation: Although not all coal beds of immediate or potential use to the coking industry in the Pittsburgh area have been tested for their coking properties, enough tests have been made to permit certain generalized statements. Virtually all the coals that will be used in this district are from the Appalachian region, and except for high oxygen coals from outcrops or stripping operations, they are coking coals. Hence the evaluation problem is not so much that of distinguishing between coking and noncoking coals as attempting to measure quantitatively differences in the coking and expanding properties of the better coking coals. Quantitative differentiation between good coking coals, is complex, since differences in their coking abilities are frequently of about the same magnitude as the precision of the test. Small-scale tests are generally unsuitable for measuring these slight differences, and there has been gradual acceptance of pilot-scale tests. Test Methods Employed: All the data reported here were obtained in two units known as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization apparatus and the sole-heated expansion oven. The BM-AGA unit, which consists essentially of a cylindrical steel retort about 18 in. diam and 26 in. high, carbonizes enough coal (180 lb) to allow evaluation of the coke by standard methods of the American Society for Testing Materials. The BM-AGA carbonization procedure and methods of testing the gas, liquid, and solid products have been described.' Expanding characteristics of the coals were determined in the sole-heated expansion oven," wherein the coal charge, heated from the bottom only, is carbonized under a constant applied force and the linear expansion or contraction is measured. Although results in this oven have never been quantitatively correlated with the expansion behavior of coals in conventional slot ovens, they are useful in assessing expansion behavior. In this report discussion will be confined to results obtained from these pilot-scale units, although the following data are available for most coals: proximate and ultimate analyses, free swelling index, agglutinating value, and plasticity. Sources of Coals Tested: In selection of coals for coke manufacture, economic considerations are as important as quality, and each coke plant balances these two factors to meet requirements of the most satisfactory coke at lowest price. Although these economic factors may in some instances outbalance small differences in coke quality, they are usually specific to each coke plant and cannot be given in any general statement. Recognizing that coal and plant operating costs are beyond the scope of the survey, the USBM evaluates the coking quality of various coals without regard to their competitive economic status. Many hydrated silicates have been synthesized and sold for commercial use. However, this paper discusses only hydrated calcium silicates and, to a lesser extent, hydrated magnesium silicates. Synthetic calcium silicates were first formed by man when he found that mixtures of silica or silicates and lime in water set up to form cements. The material which was responsible for the cementing properties was calcium silicate hydrate, although this fact was not recognized until early in this century. In the early 19001s, synthetic calcium silicates, reinforced with fibers and formed simply by reacting calcium hydroxide and silica in water with fiber at atmospheric or under low pressure autoclave conditions, found increased use in thermal insulations and in building products. These insulations were found to have a low thermal conductivity and would withstand temperatures up to 650°C. This, combined with their very low densities (from 8 to 50 Ib per cu ft) and fairly high strength, also made them suitable for use as building products. Following the disastrous Morro Castle fire of the 1930Js, calcium silicate board products were used as partitioning material in all shipboard construction in the U.S. As autoclaving techniques were improved and developed, it was: learned that under hydrothermal conditions new and useful calcium silicates which could be used under more extreme temperatures (up to 980' C) could be prepared. These had high surface areas and other unique properties which suited them for use as fillers, pesticide carriers, low temperature insulating materials, and adsorbents for the removal of fatty acids from various solutions. Hydrated magnesium silicates have not been studied as extensively as the calcium compounds. Their first important use was in the filtration of dry cleaning solutions for the removal of fatty acids. With the introduction of detergents, it was found that these products lost their advantage because of their high affinity for the detergent chemicals. However, in recent years these chemicals are finding increasing use as decolorizing agents for fats and anti-caking agents for resins. Some materials with very high surface are finding new use as adsorbents. CALCIUM SILICATE HYDRATE COMPOUNDS AND THElR CONDITIONS OF FORMATION Within the past ten years much has been done in the field of calcium silicate hydrate chemistry. As a result of this work it has been found that at least 25 different forms of calcium silicate hydrate can either be formed synthetically or found as naturally occurring materials. The Round Table Discussion on Petroleum Engineering Research was planned for two purposes. First, to review the work that has been done by petroleum engineers during the past few years on problems that have confronted the industry and, second, to suggest new studies that should be made either on the problems that have been the subject of research during the past or on problems that have arisen only recently. It was believed that by holding an informal discussion of the problems in which the petroleum engineer is vitally interested it would be possible to bring out new ideas as to the relative importance of the different problems that should be studied and to suggest new methods for attacking some of the problems that have resisted the energies of research workers throughout the industry. It was also believed that by arranging for an exchange of experiences between the different engineers it would be possible to prevent a large amount of duplication of effort in conducting research work. Those engaged in petroleum engineering research realize that there is a broad field for study and by coordinating the work it will be possible to obtain the maximum amount of information in the shortest possible time. In planning the program on Petroleum Engineering Research, nine subjects were selected for discussion and each was assigned to a man who is doing work on that subject. These men were asked to lead the discussion on the problem assigned to each one. An effort was made to choose problems of a practical nature and upon which considerable work is being conducted at the present time. Some of the men who were asked to lead the discussion were unable to attend the meeting but most of them submitted a written discussion- of the subject assigned, with the result that there was a discussion of eight of the nine problems. Professor Uren, who was asked to lead the discussion on the subject of Recent Developments in Methods for Reducing Gas-oil Ratios, was unable to attend the meeting and advised that he did not have any new ideas to contribute.

In a recent paper' I took exception to the opening paragraph of Mr. Hill's paper, in which he says:— " In endeavoring to interpret the geological occurrence of oil, the geologist is confronted by the fact that science has not yet solved the problem of its origin, which lies at the root of the subject.... For the present we must consider oil as a material in the rocks, the origin of which is still unexplained." I take this occasion to repeat my objection to the above statement, as well as to the similar statement of Mr. C. W. Hayes and William Kennedy in their recent bulletin2 on the same oilfields :—" The origin of petroleum is one of the most obscure problems by which geologists are confronted." I do not hesitate to say that these statements, which claim we know so little to-day of the origin of petroleum, are not warranted in the present state of geological science, and that, on the contrary, geology can to-day most clearly prove the origin of oil to be inorganic and the result of solfataric volcanic emanations. It has been so long assumed that oil or bitumen is due to the decomposition of the organic remains of the sedimentary rocks, that the words organic and bituminous are used synonymously and, accordingly, without attempt at explanation, the origin of oil is in every case ascribed to some bituminous-shale horizon, more or less full of organic matter. IN a recent investigation, carried out at the Institute for the Study of Metals, the affinity of sul-phur for iron, copper, and manganese was studied over the temperature range 700" to 1300°C.' It was found that copper exhibits a rather high affinity for sulphur, especially at higher temperatures; and attention was called to the possibility that copper when present together with sulphur in liquid steel would tend to lower the chemical activity of sulphur and thus interfere with the desulphurization process. It was clear, however, that the data for the equilibrium between pure copper and pure copper sulphide (Cu2S) could not give any quantitative information about the effect of copper when dissolved in liquid steel. The present work is concerned with the activity of sulphur in the diluted range of the binary iron-sulphur system, and with the influence of small amounts of copper on this sulphur activity. This investigation is in principle based on the same method previously described for the binary metal-sulphur studies;1,2 namely, reaction with hydrogen to form hydrogen sulphide. The equilibrium ratio PH2s/Ph2 in the equilibrium gas mixture is, for a given temperature, directly proportional to the sulphur activity. The activity of sulphur in liquid iron has previously been studied by Chipman and Ta Li,3 White and Skelly,4 and recently by Sherman, Elvander, and Chipman.5 Morris and Williams6 have studied the effect of added silicon, and Kitchener, Bockris and Liberman,7 and recently Morris and Buehl,8 the effect of added carbon on the sulphur activity. In present day steelmaking processes the steel bath contains between 0.01 and 0.1 pct sulphur, and the copper content may be as high as 0.5 pct. The equi-librium gas ratio (H2S/H2) would, for such a low-sulphur content, be too low to be measured with the experimental technique we use. It has been shown by previous investigators that the H2S/H2 ratio is closely proportional to the sulphur content up to about 1 pct sulphur. The sulphur activity at very low-sulphur content can therefore be calculated by linear interpolation between 0 and 1 pct sulphur. In order to show the general trend with increasing sulphur content, the present work has been carried out to about 3.5 pct sulphur. As the effect of copper was assumed to be more a function of the Cu/S ratio than of the absolute copper content, the runs with copper were made for certain constant values for this ratio.

H. C. WEED*—Referring to the use of "dummy fuse" for checking the shots in chute blasting operations, I believe that an even better practice is to blast the chutes with no delay electric blasting caps. Permanent wires can be strung through the grizzly lines and the lead wires from the shots attached to these lines. Using this method, no time is lost in spitting the individual fuses. The possibility of a fused charge becoming dislodged by previous shots and falling into the chute below is eliminated and there is no chance of a man walking back into his own blast. A small hand twist blasting machine or a radio "B" battery can be used to fire the shots if the lines are fired individually. If so desired the entire area can be blasted at once by a switch at the manway or in the drift below. providing a sufficient source of electricity is available. In case a switch is used, proper precaution for locking the switch must be provided. R. H. WIGHTMAN (author's reply) —We do use electric blasting when the number of shots is large; but we have found it more satisfactory to use fuse and caps for individual shots on the grizzly.

Consolidated Gold Fields Limited published annually an excellent reference, GOLD 1978, GOLD 1979, giving the Supply and Demand for Gold, Recent Developments and Prospects, Soviet Gold Production, etc. This outstanding reference is authored by Christopher Glynn, Investment Department, London, Great Britain. The 1978 Report marked the tenth anniversary of Gold Field's review of world gold market developments; and from it and the 1979 report, the following information was derived. The recovery of gold is widespread in the Soviet Union. Originally, gold was mined principally in the Urals, but in the last few years several major deposits have been discovered in the southwestern areas of the Soviet Union. One of the most dramatic discoveries has been the Muruntau deposit in Western Uzbekestan. This deposit, discovered in 1958, is reported to be the largest and among the lowest cost producers in the Soviet Union. It is located in Armenia, approximately 750 km (465 miles) northeast of the Iran-Afghanistan border, lying in the center of the Kyzylkurn (Red Sands) desert at the foot of Muruntau Mountain. Free gold occurs in both fine and coarse size in quartz veins up to 20 m (66 ft) thick associated with a small percentage of sulfides, mainly arsenopyrite. The ore zone constitutes a large gold-enriched stock work of about 4 sq krn (1.5 sq miles). The development of Muruntau was a major undertaking with open -pit development and construction of the mill and refinery complex started early in 1967, and the first gold bar poured in mid-1969. At the end of the first construction stage in 1970, the mill building was an imposing structure about 38 m (125 ft) high and 330 (1,080 ft) in length housing, probably, 11 parallel milling circuits. The first construction stage also included six 50 m (165 ft) diameter thickeners and 30 Pachuca tanks. The original mill complex was tripled in size after large additional gold reserves were discovered at a depth of 600 m (1,970 ft); and the deposit is now being exploited by both open- pit and underground workings. Ore is ground in semi-autogenous mills with the free gold being recovered into a high-grade concentrate on shaking tables. Table tailings are purnped to duplex spiral classifiers in closed circuit with the grinding mills. Classifier overflow is then thickened before being transferred to the Pachuca building where cyanidation takes place. An ion exchange resin is then added in a countercurrent

Sifto Salt Div. of Domtar Chemicals Ltd. has developed a new method for installing roof bolts in the high backs of its 1-million-tpy rock-salt mine at Goderich, Ontario, on the east shore of Lake Huron. The method teams a telescoping- boom hydraulic crane with a specially developed combination auger-drill and bolt-tightening ma- chine. One man, controlling all operations from a basket supported at the end of the crane's telescoping boom, installs an average of 100 5-ft roof bolts per shift, at heights to 45 ft. The mine has very long backs that are not as stable as might be expected. The result has been that roof scaling has occupied an unusually high percentage of the underground work force. About six years ago, company officials decided to go to 100% roof bolting of all backs as a safety measure. The present roof-bolting equipment is the result of a development program instituted at that time to find a faster and more economical method for doing the job.

Most of the recent discussion of the mineral land law published in the Transactions is in the abstract—an exception being Mr. Goodale's paper, The Apex Law in the Drumlummon Controversyll which illustrates in concrete instances many of the practical disadvantages of what Dr. Raymond has called "The Law of the Apex." The present paper, it is hoped, may serve a similar purpose, emphasizing the necessity for a change in our mining laws, and bringing home to mining engineers some of the defects and dangers of our present code. There are many storm centers of "apex litigation" in the Rocky Mountains; and not the 1east. of them is the Wardner camp, where such litigation has been almost continuous since 1892, and the end is not yet. In their decisions, the courts have accepted the claims of the litigants that the "Wardner vein" is a broad zone varying from 250 to 500 ft. in width at the surface. This is the simplest theory which could have been advanced, and probably decreased, rather than augmented, the number of contests; in fact, every one of the claim owners seemed to feel that the greatest advantage would accrue to him if this theory were adhered to. The dominant structural feature of the Wardner vein is a persistent fault, striking N. 40' W., dipping about 40" to the southwest and called the "Wardner foot wall." Fig. 1 is a composite of two adjacent cross-sections of the vein and is a fair representation of the relative size and shape of the orebodies and their relation to the "Wardner foot wall." The country rock is a comparatively thin-bedded sericitic quartzite which has an average strike of N. 80" W. and dips at high angles to the north and south. The movement on the Wardner foot wall is apparently normal, and there has been more or less brecciation on either side of it; but as the moving mass was that above the foot wall, the brecciation has been more complete on that side, and has extended farther from the plane of movement. The Lucky Friday mine east of Mullan, Idaho, is an outstanding example of a property in the Coeur dlAlene district where a small and insignificant-appearing silver-lead-zinc vein at the surface has changed at depth into a large vein of great importance. The Lucky Friday vein has little if any surface expression and above the 1200 level the ore shoots are small and discontinuous. Between the 1200 level and 2450 level, the lowest developed level, the main ore shoot has shown remarkable improvement on each succeeding lower level, and today the mine is one of the major lead-silver producers in the Coeur d'Alene district. History: The Lucky Friday property is on the north side of the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River in sections 25, 26 and 35, T. 48 N., R. 5 E., Hunter mining district, Shoshone County, Idaho. This is about one mile east of the town of Mullan, which serves the eastern portion of the Coeur d'Alene district. The southern part of the property is crossed by a branch line of the Northern Pacific Ry. and by U. S. Highway 10. This highway is the principal road crossing the panhandle of Idaho and connects the district with Spokane, Wash., on the west and Missoula, Mont., on the east. The main portal and surface plant of the Lucky Friday mine is at an elevation of 3365 ft, only a short distance above the valley floor and a few hundred feet from U. S. Highway 10. so the mine is readily accessible for year-round operation. The property is comprised of six claims, known as the Lucky Friday group, owned outright by the Lucky Friday Silver-Lead Mines Co. There are four patented claims, Good Friday, Lucky Friday, Northern Light, and Lucky Friday Fraction No. 2 (Mineral Survey No. 3028), and two unpatented claims, Hunter and Creek. In addition, Lucky Friday owns an undivided one-half interest in the Hunter Creek property. which adjoins the Lucky Friday group on the north: a 90 pct interest in the mineral rights in the Jutila Ranch (160A), which adjoins the Lucky Friday group on the east; and a 60 pct interest in the Lucky Friday Extension claim group, which adjoins the Lucky Friday group on the west. The company also has a long-term mining lease on the Hunter Ranch, which adjoins the Lucky Friday group on the west. The claims of the Lucky Friday group were located between 1899 and 1906. The Lucky Friday Mines Co. was organized in 1906 and did considerable exploration work by surface trenching and shallow underground workings, only to see the property sold by the Shoshone county sheriff to satisfy labor claims totaling $2000 in 1912. Another firm, Lucky Friday Mining Co., bought the claims in 1914 and spent 12 years driving what is now known as the tunnel level crosscut. This tunnel intersected a vein previously exposed in a higher tunnel, but it was only a few inches wide. The vein was followed a short distance westerly but was so unpromising that the work was discontinued in favor of extending the main crosscut tunnel several hundred feet north. No ore was found and all work was discontinued. The property was held in such low esteem by the firm that it let taxes amounting to less than $15 a year go delinquent for nine years. Then the property lay idle for two more years until in 1938 John Sekulic, a Mullan service station operator, took a lease, with a $15,000 purchase option, on the advice of an old miner who had worked in the mine. Sekulic re-opened the tunnel level crosscut and explored the vein with an easterly drift for about 200 ft. The vein was too narrow to be of commercial value but was believed interesting enough to warrant further exploration at depth. Lacking funds to explore the vein at depth, Sekulic tried to get the district's larger operating companies to take over his lease and option. They were not interested because of the lean tunnel level showing and the fact that the property lay between the White Ledge fault on the north and Osburn fault on the south, an area which geologists always considered unworthy of exploration. Sekulic then organized the present company and assigned his lease and option to it for stock. This was in 1939. Enough stock was sold locally to finance sinking of a shaft 100 ft from the tunnel level east drift. The vein at this additional depth still was not commercial but showed some improvement. The numerous and copious reports of geological surveys made in the lead and zinc region of Wisconsin leave, perhaps, but little room for any original work, or for descriptive details of the nature and origin of the deposits not already given in the exhaustive memoirs of Percival, Whitney, and Chamberlin and their associates. HOWeyer, since the completion of the last survey, in 1879, much more attention has been given than before to the exploration of the ores of zinc, especially of late years, since the region has been better opened up by railways and the zinc industry of the country has assumed large proportions, giving a constantly increasing demand for zinc-ores. A residence of more than a year in the region, and the active direction during that time of mining operations over a considerable area, have familiarized me with the forms and peculiarities of many of the deposits; and it appears probable that some observations upon them, especially from the mining and commercial standpoint, may interest the members of the Institute. A few notes on the structure of the deposits from the mineralogical and chemical standpoints have already been presented by me to the Wisconsin Academy of Arts and Sciences." The presence of lead-ore in the soil at many points along the Mississippi river was well known to the aborigines, and early attracted the attention of the frontier traders, who purchased from the Indians the ore and even lead smelted out by the squaws. The demand for the lead-ore soon increased, and it became one of the early and potent factors determining the settlement of southwestern Wisconsin, and the development of its mining and agricultural resources. THE liability for damages to the surface caused by subsidence is an ever present threat in all underground mining. In ordinary lode mining, this threat rarely materializes into an action, due to the method of mining metaliferous ores, the dip of the veins, and the nature of the ground itself. In the mining of coal, however, this threat is very real. The coal frequently lies close to the surface, in beds underlying large areas of land the surface of which is suitable for agricultural or urban development. Furthermore, the coal is generally mined by the "room and pillar " method and when the pillars of coal are removed, the subjacent support is destroyed. This question of the duty of surface support has now become a very live one in Colorado. What was waste prairie land a few years .ago, has become valuable agricultural land dotted here and there with growing towns. Frequent references will be made here to Colorado conditions and adjudicated cases, but those conditions and cases and the conclusions to be drawn therefrom are equally applicable to all coal-mining states. Briefly stated, the question is "Does the owner of the substrata or underlying mineral, owe any duty of surface support to the owner of the superjacent strata or surface?" There is no absolute duty of support owed by the mineral owner and this assertion is made with full knowledge of numerous expressions to the contrary by courts of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and other coal-mining states. Whether or not any duty exists depends upon the circumstances surrounding each case, and since in the nature of things those circumstances are rarely identical, there can be no absolute rule.

Seventeen members of the Board were present, and the Secretary of the Institute. During part of the meeting, seven other Members of the Institute were also present as guests. After extended discussion, the Board approved the general principles embodied in the War Minerals bill, and recommended the passage of a bill embodying these principles. The vote stood 14 in favor and two opposed, one member not voting. On motion, duly seconded, it was RESOLVED, that in connection with the appointment of the proposed War Minerals Administrator, the attention off the War Minerals Committee be called to the importance of selecting a man trained in the mining and metallurgical industry, but having no pecuniary interest in these industries. John V. N. Dorr was elected Director to fill the vacancy caused by the election of Robert M. Raymond as Vice-President. Charles W. Goodale was elected First Vice-President. George C. Stone was elected Treasurer. Rossiter W. Raymond was appointed Secretary Emeritus. Bradley Stoughton was elected Secretary. The following committees were elected: Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Committee on Papers and Publications, Committee on Membership, Library Committee, Committee on Nominations, Committee on Safety, Sanitation and Welfare. SOME form of longwall mining is generally used in Continental Europe; also in Great Britain where the coal is weak and friable, or the coal bed provides material for pack walls and filling, or where the bottom is soft and squeezes up easily, or the roof is pliable, or the bed is thin and brushing provides building material, or the thick multiple seams are mined in layers, such as the 24-ft. seam at Weymss, Scotland or the 10-yd. pitching bed near Coventry, England. Pillar methods have been retained in British fields where the coal beds are from 5 to 9 ft. (1.5 to 2.7 m.) thick, and free from thick partings or binders or without draw slate, which would provide waste rock for pack walls, or where the roof is hard and requires shooting to bring down and also the bottom or floor is comparatively hard. The room-and-pillar system, by which probably 95 per cent., of the coal of the United States is produced, is now found in only a few mines in Wales, where it is known as the pillar. and .(single) stall method. The American room-and-pillar system is not equivalent to the bord-and-pillar or stoop-and-room system. The essential difference between the bord-and-pillar and the average American room-and-pillar system is probably due to natural conditions. The majority of the coal mines in the United States have a depth of less than 700 ft. (213.m.). The bulk of the coal mined in Europe comes from a depth of more than 1200, ft., while the deepest mines in Great Britain, Belgium, and France reach 3500 to 4000 ft. In deep workings wide spans are impracticable, even with the use of abundant timber; accordingly, as the mines in the United States become deeper the rooms will become narrower and the pillars thicker, and the bulk of the coal will be extracted on the retreat. It is generally conceded, without reference to the cost of production, that the larger the pillars left on the first mining, the more thoroughly can the, coal be extracted. (written discussion*).-It is some-what difficult to discuss the paper of Mr. Stork, when the description of the cupola melting occurrences indicates that his practice is open to question. The evident burning of much of the steel charged,. coupled with the remarkably low silicon content of the mixture as shown by the resulting product, throws the entire melting practice into that of making cupola malleable. If anything is wanted here, it is a. high bed to melt upon, and yet Mr. Stork in the very beginning of his paper speaks of the evils of oxidation due to a "high" bed, etc. The experienced foundry-mall would judge at the outset that Mr. Stork has kept his bed in the cupola too low, and naturally got a lot of oxidation from the blast. The oxidation of steel when used in large quantities in cupola mixtures is a well-known phenomenon, and is readily understood. One has but to. put a file into the forge fire and watch it burn when heated high enough. The melting point of steel being higher than cast iron, heavy pieces may dig way into the bed before being completely melted away, the last por-tions being directly exposed to free oxygen from the blast. Another situation not to be forgotten is the oxidizing effect of carbon dioxide at high temperatures. A serious oxidation of the steel is quite conceivable if in the zone of maximum carbon dioxide and minimum carbon monoxide-free oxygen being entirely absent. Hence the well understood practice of never melting a mixture with much steel unless the bed is kept exceed-ingly high; or again the above-mentioned malleable practice. Mr. Stork mentions the impossibility of deoxidizing a heat. after the steel contained has been oxidized. This is true to a great extent with the ordinary deoxidizers, such as silicon and manganese, but can be brought about by vanadium, titanium, magnesium, etc. Proper melting, however, makes this unnecessary.
