Longwall coal mining is a growing mining technique in the United States. However, very little premining exploration data are collected presently by coal companies to 1) select coal winning equipment, 2) select and design face supports and supports in gate and tail entries, or 3) optimize operational parameters such as length, width, and orientation of face. The authors are of the opinion that much of the data needed for mine planning and design for longwall mining can be obtained during exploration. In this paper, the authors identify the data requirements, discuss how these data can be obtained during exploration, propose an exploration program and estimate the cost to obtain the necessary data.

SOME of the outstanding features of petroleum production in Illinois during 1923 were: (1) Sustained production from the older wells, due to cleaning and deepening; (2) good results from new drilling in a few localities; (3) large percentage of dry holes, many of which were ill advised tests, with a resulting high cost of the new production; (4) decrease in the number of productive wells in the state; (5) low average price of crude petroleum, a serious factor over the entire country. FIG. 1.-ANNUAL TOTALS OF ILLINOIS PRODUCTION. The total production of Illinois for 1923 was 8,710,000 bbl.,1 a decrease of 7.2 per cent. from that of 1922. Of this amount, it is estimated that about 8,500,000 bbl. were produced by old wells, many of which had been cleaned and deepened somewhat, and approximately 210,000 bbl. were obtained from the new wells drilled during the year. About 95 per cent. of the oil comes from the southeastern field in Clark, Crawford, and Lawrence Counties, where production is almost entirely from Pennsylvanian and Mississippian rocks. Extensions of the productive area were made in Clark, Wabash, Marion, and Jackson Counties. Some important gas development has been accomplished near Jacksonville, in Morgan County, and at Gillespie, in Macoupin County.

The use of Na-montmorillonite clay binders (Western Bentonite) in the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates is well established as is the idea that alternative binders must be found. 1-6 This note summarizes work done7 in evaluating a Wisconsin montmorillonite clay binder. The clay occurs in irregualr beds overlying the Prairie du Chien Dolomite and the St. Peters Sandstone near Hersey, St. Croix County.

In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table 1 may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable from data available to the author, please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of an 0 is a positive declaration, and an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Under the columns on "Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. Robert T. Walker and Woodville J. Walker (Walker Engineering Corp., Salt Lake City)—Mr. Kinkel's article embodies, in condensed form, the results of the first detailed and complete geological survey that has ever been made of the long neglected but potentially very important West Shasta Copper-Zinc district, in Shasta County, California. In view of the difficulties of the terrain and the complexity of the geological structure, this represents a notable achievement, and it is with regret, therefore, that the writers find it necessary to differ from Mr. Kinkel's conclusions on two important points. The first has to do with the interpretation of two members of the stratigraphic column of formations in the district; for purposes of comparison, the description of these two members according to Mr. Kinkel is shown parallel to the description of these members according to the writers, see Fig. 14, Mr. Kinkel's nomenclature being used. The first member, which Mr. Kinkel terms the upper unit of the Balaklala rhyolite, consists of a single, massive, homogenous body of very silicious igneous rock, consisting almost wholly of quartz and albite, and averaging about 80 pct silica. Most geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey who have previously inspected the district have called it an alaskite. It is not a pile of several members, but is a single unit, without internal subdivisions. It has the form of a recumbent lens, approximately flat on the bottom and arched on top, several miles in diameter, and attaining a maximum thickness of 1000 to 1200 ft. It varies in texture from porphyritic to holocrystalline, and contains unusually large quartz phenocrysts up to 4 mm diam. Mr. Kinkel considers this formation to be a thick lava flow that is older than the overlying Kennett shale, while the writers interpret it as being intrusive, constituting a domed sill or laccolith that is younger than the Kennett shale. Their reasons are as follows: 1) This formation shows none of the features which within the writers' experience invariably accompany very silicious lava flows. Nowhere is it vesicular; nowhere does it contain any glass or its devitrified equivalent; nowhere does it contain flow breccia; and nowhere has it a ragged top, in spite of the fact that there is no evidence of surface erosion, which might have removed such a top.

J. A. RICHARDSON[t]-Mr. Stuckey's account of the geology of the kaolins of North Carolina suggests that they exhibit some features similar to those of the Malay Peninsula. About one half of British Malaya (some 26,000 square miles) is occupied at the surface by igneous rocks, of which granite and its associated derivatives constitute fully 90 pct. The average granite is a biotic variety. It is predominantly potassic but carries, in addition, notable amounts of soda and lime so that albite and albiteoligoclase are generally common constituents of the rock. The minor derivatives from granite "magma" likewise include potassic and sodi-potassic members. Decomposition of the granitic rocks has led to the formation of kaolin in many localities, but, in general, the deposits are rather small and, at present, none is exploited commercially. True primary or residual kaolins (as defined by Stuckey; p. 48 Vol. 173, p. 2 TP 2219) have been developed from feldspar veins, pegmatites and from other granitic differentiates which cut through the larger masses of granite; they are usually small and narrow. Kaolin has been derived from aplite, quartz porphyry, quartz micro-porphyry, felsites and microgranites belonging to a complex known as the Chegar Perah-Pulai intrusion in northwest Pahang and southwest Kelantan. The bulk of the component rocks has been more or less strongly sheared. Kaolin-like end products have been formed from both sheared and nonsheared varieties. Kaolin has been formed also by the complete breakdown of trondjemite flanking the northwestern and western margins of the complex Bukit Ranjut syenite intrusion in northwest Pahang. These trondjemites range in composition from essentially quartz-free albiteplagioclasites to quartz-free microcline rocks; they are, in effect, the syenitic homologues of white sodic and potassic granite-aplites. The granites in Malaya have generally undergone more or less severe surficial weathering leading to the production of a spongy and rather cellular or a soft "mealy" material (sandy clay) down to depths of about 100 ft; in places the granite is strongly decomposed down to 150 ft. There has occurred, therefore, widespread partial kaolinization, but, in general, no extensive deposits of good quality kaolin seem to have been formed by these processes of decay. Frequently, the katamorphic processes of desilicification have advanced beyond the production of kaolin towards the formation of lateritic end products. The more important Malayan kaoiins seem to be confined to the western alluvial plains, particularly in areas either where granite crops out at surface, or where it forms the bedrock of the alluvium. There are numerous excellent examples around Gopeng and elsewhere in the Kinta Valley of Perak. Such kaolins belong to Stuckey's groups of secondary deposits, and, like them, these also may be bedded. Field observations have established the existence of what for want of a better name is referred to by the Malayan Geological Survey as "granite wash." It is believed that granite, undergoing extensive deeply penetrative and probably rather rapid destruction under humid tropical weathering (temperature around 90°F; rainfall about 100 in. per annum; high humidity) "flowed," was moved by "creep" and, in addition, probably slumped in large waterlogged masses of sandy clay from topographic salients onto the adjacent flats. Either during this period of transmigration or later when the sludged granite detritus, after having more or less come to rest, was attacked by flowing water, differential sorting and erosion took place with the result that the resorted debris was moved and later deposited as bedded alluvium. The equilibrium between Ir-Fe or Rh-Fe alloys, iron oxide (wüstite or magnetite), and CO2-CO atmospheres has been determined at 1200°C. The data are used to derive the activities in these binary solid solutions. Both systems show negative deviations from Raoult's law. The lattice parameters are given for the investigated Ir-Fe and Rh-Fe alloys. IRIDIUM and iron form a continuous series of fcc solid solutions at elevated temperatures.' Rhodium-rich Rh- Fe alloys have fcc structure.' In the medium concentration range an ordered bcc phase is stable at temperatures up to about 1300°C. Phase relations in iron-rich alloys are not well-known. No thermody-namic data are available for these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method used was to measure the equilibria between a gas phase of known CO2/C0 ratio, the alloy, and iron oxide (wüstite or magnetite). In one series of experiments the alloys of known composition were heated in CO 2-CO gas mixtures. After treatment (usually 1 day) the sample was quenched to room temperature and its surface examined visually to determine whether an oxide tarnish had formed. The procedure was repeated at slightly higher CO 2/CO ratios until the CO 2/CO ratio of incipient oxidation was found. Subsequently, the CO 2/C0 ratio was lowered again in small increments until the tarnish was reduced. In other experiments mixtures of alloy and iron oxide powders were pressed into pellets and equilibrated with the CO2-CO gas phase. In order to ensure that equilibrium was attained, two specimens with different starting iron content were heated side by side; in most cases, equilibrium was approached in one pellet by reduction of iron oxide and in the other pellet by oxidation of metallic iron. The sample was quenched to room temperature, and the composition of the equilibrated alloy was determined by X-ray measurements of lattice parameters and comparison of these values with calibration curves obtained from alloys of known composition. The oxides present in the specimens were identified by comparison of their diffraction patterns with those in the ASTM Card File. It may be expected from the noble character of iridium and rhodium that no appreciable amount of iridium or rhodium is dissolved in wiistite and magnetite under the present experimental conditions. The activity of iron in the alloy is then equal to that established in the iron oxide by the COrCO atmosphere. The Parkes process of lead refining is based on the fact that when zinc isemixed with molten lead bullion, it forms an alloy with the silver and gold. This alloy freezes at a higher temperature and is of a lower specific gravity than the lead. With proper regulation of the temperature, the alloy solidifies and floats on top of the lead bath, from which it is removed and the silver, gold, and zinc recovered. The alloy should contain the maximum amount of silver (Ag2Zn,). The usual practice is to make two additions of the zinc. The first addition gives an alloy, or zinc crust, the zinc of which is saturated and is treated for the recovery of its zinc and silver; the crust from the second addition contains an excess of zinc and is used for the first addition on the following kettle. The crust produced depends on a number of items: purity of bullion, temperature, care with which kettle work is performed, addition of zinc, pressure used in expelling lead from crust, etc. It is desirable to make the concentration of silver in the zinc crust as high as possible; otherwise an undue amount of byproducts is produced, which greatly increases the cost of refining. It was formerly considered good practice to make a concentration of 20 :1. That is to say, if the lead bullion assayed 150 oz. dorê per ton, the assay of the retort bullion recovered from the zinc crust should be 3000 oz. per ton. As a matter of fact, the concentration should never, except on bullion assaying over 300 oz., be so low, and with low-grade bullion it should be 50:1. In one lead refinery where, ordinarily, the work was good, on a bullion averaging about 200 oz. per ton, a concentration of 24:1 was common; but how it was obtained was known only to the foremen. Changes occurred, and under new foremen the kettle work fell off badly; the problem then was to bring about this greater concentration. As is customary, the refincry had a "schedule" for its 60-ton kettles, which gave the number of pounds of zinc required for all possible assays, on both the first and the second zincing. The industry has been canvassed for information on methods of handling grinding steel at milling plants, an important subject overlooked in most descriptive articles on milling plant arrangements. The data collected are offered in this paper as a guide to designers and planners who have loading and storage problems to solve. WITH capacities of milling plants expanding from a few hundred tons per day to many thousand, replenishment of grinding media is an important phase of mill operation. Information on this aspect of milling procedure, solicited from several mining companies, is summarized here. At International Nickel's Copper Cliff concentrator the normally strenuous job of changing rods is considerably simplified by the use of the Garrow rod charging machine, Fig. 1. The overhead crane, Fig. 2, brings a bundle of rods, weighing four to a ton, to the loading platform of the machine, positioned in front of the mill. The rods roll one by one down the slight incline of the platform onto a conveyor which sends them into the mill. A modified version of the Garrow machine, Fig. 3, is used at the Federal mill of St. Joseph Lead Co. An overhead crane places the portable steel structure in position in front of the discharge end of any one of the five 9x12-ft rod mills. It then raises a bundle of about twenty 3-in. rods to the discharge platform of the charging machine. The rods are 11 ft 7 in. long and weigh about 278 lb. By tripping a lever the operator allows one rod at a time to roll onto the inclined rollers. A slight push by the operator sends the rod smoothly into the mill. The Union Miniére du Haut Katanga rod charging machine, Fig. 4, is mounted on a pair of wheels at the forward end with swiveling castors at the back for steering it to position for use or storage. Wheels are equipped with locking brakes to maintain the machine in position while it delivers rods to the mill. The device is made in two parts. The first consists of the base, which carries the supporting wheels, grooved rollers, and drive. The other part serves as the rod deck, which can carry up to six 3-in. x 12-ft rods. A short boom built integral with the base reaches through the mill trunnion and delivers the rods into the mill barrel. Three grooved guide rollers ,are provided to receive the rods from the sloping charging deck. One rod at a time is fed to the rollers and thus delivered into the mill. Two of the rollers are driven by 11/2-hp motor through a V-belt drive. The third roller is driven off the first by a single V belt in a groove below the rod groove and on the same center line. Rods are delivered to the charger by an overhead crane in bundles of three to six as needed. The power is supplied by cables plugged into power outlets, suitably located near the rod mill discharge end. The Oliver Iron Mining Co. uses a rod charger, Fig. 5, suspended from a monorail by cables. It is constructed .of structural steel and has two decks, each capable of carrying five rods of 4-in. maximum diameter. The rods ride in grooved free-turning rollers. LIME is a very general term applied to products of limestone, in popular treatises often incorrectly, including ground or pulverized limestone used in agriculture. When used without qualifying adjective, the term usually means burned or calcined limestone, or quicklime, or calcia. The corresponding calcined product of magnesite is magnesia. If the calcined rock is relatively pure calcium carbonate, the resulting lime is a "high-calcium" lime; if the rock is dolomite, or a combination of calcium and magnesium carbonates, the lime is a "dolomitic" or a "high- magnesium" lime. There are various grades in between, depending on the percentage of magnesium carbonate and other ingredients in the raw rock. For some industrial purposes only high-calcium limes are suitable; in other processing-as, for example, neutralizing acid wastes -the relative percentages of magnesium and calcium carbonates in the raw material are not important. Limestone is burned (roasted or calcined) in furnaces known as lime kilns by direct exposure to the hot gases and flames. When heated to incandescence, the carbon dioxide content of the rock is expelled, leaving calcium and magnesium oxides, according to the formula usually written: [ ] This thermal reaction is reversible, which requires that the lime be withdrawn from the "calcining zone" of the kiln about as fast as made. Pure calcium carbonate would lose 44 pct of its weight in the calcining process; dolomite, 48 pct. Generally, the lime will retain the approximate size and shape of the piece of rock from which it is made but some few limestones tend to break down into granules or dust. Hence lime (quicklime) comes from the kilns in lumps or granules and normally is packed in water- tight containers in these forms, or is pulverized after calcination.

Ore beneficiation via grinding and flotation has traditionally been considered an art because, until recently, the beneficiation plants that operated effectively were those run by skillful personnel who had acquired an "eye" and a "feel" for the process. Today, thanks to technological developments of the past five to ten years, ore beneficiation can be tackled more scientifically. In properly chosen applications, two developments that can bring significant operational and control improvements to concentrating plants are: • X-ray fluorescent spectrometers-that continuously measure chemical composition of flotation process streams, and • Minicomputers-that are relatively inexpensive and highly reliable in data gathering and process control.

EXTENDED discussions, by inviting attention to problems affecting the conservation of natural resources, have encouraged investigations as to their sufficiency, with the general result that the more thorough the examination, the less cause appears for anxiety as to the exhaustion or serious depletion of these resources. The extent of industrial development, the large plants and the enormous volumes of materials required, when compared with conditions a few decades ago, are sufficiently startling to enlist the attention of those who "fear .the pace," and yet in but few instances has real solicitude for the future. been warranted by a knowledge of true conditions. In a former communication, presented 5 years ago,1 I endeavored to emphasize the fact that true conservation represented the best utilization of reserves and not the locking up of resources for future use; a conviction which has become more pronounced as the subject was investigated. Prophecies of the, early exhaustion of mineral resources have raised the question as to our permanent reliance upon these, and encouraged inquiries which have in most cases developed reassuring conditions. But the fact that the future appears less dark than prognosticated cannot excuse wastefulness or improvidence; and detailed study which demonstrates an apparent abundance of natural resources should encourage their best application. In making inventories of resources one is liable to confine conclusions as to availability upon present circumstances and conditions in the past, or to formulate data for the future upon methods which are rapidly being displaced. In reserves which are not reproductive, such as minerals, the possibilities of exhausting the supply are startling if estimates assume that future extensions will follow methods which were less economical than those now employed, or to he used, and we dare not claim that the limit of advanced practice has been attained.

NICKEL-RICH alloys hardened with small additions of titanium and aluminum and centered around that region of face-centered-cubic primary solid solution, 7, where the atomic ratio of nickel chromium is about 3 to 1, form an important series of high temperature materials because of their resistance to oxidation, high temperature strength, and excellent creep characteristics at elevated temperatures.' With suitable heat treatment it is possible to precipitate a phase based on the ordered face-centered-cubic y' phase, Ni,,Al, from the randomly ordered nickel-rich y face-centered-cubic primary solid solution. By adjusting the ratio of aluminum to titanium the precipitation of needles of the hexagonal intermetallic compound n-NiaTi may be effected. In the present investigation, the main interest was focused on the interrelationships among the y, y, and 7 phases. By using alloying elements of high purity and a suitable melting technique the presence of carbides and nitrides could be completely obviated, although it is realized that their presence is probably essential in alloys of commercial importance. As a preliminary to the study of the Ni-Cr-Ti-A1 system, it was necessary to establish the constitutional diagrams of the three contiguous systems, Ni-Cr-Al, Ni-Ti-Al, and Ni-Cr-Ti, which together form the nickel-rich corner of the Ni-Cr-Ti-A1 quaternary tetrahedron. Accounts of this work on the ternary systems have already been published by the author. A preliminary disclosure of the author's investigations on the ternary and quaternary systems has been made by Hignett2 and has since stimulated work in the same field by Nordheim and Grant." Before the detailed account of the quaternary system, a brief description will be given of the three contiguous ternary diagrams on which it is ultimately founded. Ni-Cr-Ti System The 750° and 1000°C temperature isothermals of the Ni-Cr-Ti system as determined by Taylor and Floyd' are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The single phase fields of greatest interest are occupied by the extensive face-centered-cubic y primary solid solution of chromium and titanium in nickel, and the close-packed-hexagonal Daltonide, n-Ni3Ti, from which tie-lines radiate across the very wide y+n two-phase field. The chromium-rich primary solid solution is represented by a. As may be seen from the diagrams, the extent of the y phase field increases quite appreciably as the temperature is raised from 750" to 1000°C. Isoparametric lines for the y phase are shown in Fig. 1. They are interesting in that they are almost parallel to the y/r+n boundary. Thus the determination of the tie-line directions is entirely dependent on the exact stoichiometry of composition of the 7 phase. Ni-Ti-Al System The 750°C isothermal section of the nickel-rich portion of the system Ni-Ti-A1 as determined by Taylor and Floyd is shown in Fig. 3.' The regions of greatest interest are the extensive y primary solid solution of titanium and aluminum in nickel, the y' Berthollide phase field based on the ordered face-centered-cubic structure of Ni3Al, and the hexagonal Daltonide phase, n-Ni3Ti. As may be seen from Figs. 3 and 4 the area occupied by the y phase is substantially the same at 750°C as at 1000°C, but the area of the 7 phase is considerably greater at the higher temperature. BECAUSE gold is a compound mineral praised by philosophers and all wise men as being of the highest perfection among all mixed minerals, and because of its great beauty, it is the universal opinion that it possesses extraordinary powers which are beneficial to man. Hence, I, too, in order to honor it, wish to begin by speaking of it now rather than of any of the other metals, and I wish in particular to tell you of its generation and of its most obvious qualities, for, although it is a metal very widely known and one that is desired and sought after by all kinds of persons, I know of few who take the trouble to find out what its substance or natural form may be. But, in order that you too may not be one of those who know it only by name or by the appearance that it shows outwardly to us, I tell you that its original and peculiar materials are none other than elemental sub¬stances, with the quantity and quality of each proportioned equally one to the other and very finely purified. Single crystals of Pbl-xSnXTe have been grown from The melt under liquid B2O3 using the Czochralski technique. The PbTe-SnTe crystals were grown from near-stoichiometric melts and from melts with slight deviations from sloichiometry. Crystal growth rates ranging from 1 mm per hr to 1 cm per hr were employed, the latter being generally used. Several investigations were performed to characterize the single crystals grown In this study. The phase diagram of the PbTe-SnTe system was examined. X-ray analyses verified the single-crystal character of the crystals, and powder pattern lattice parameter determinations showed that Vegard's law was followed within the limits of the experimental error. The as-grown crystals were p-type with apparent carrier concentrations of -8 x 1018 to -8 x 1020 carriers per cu cm. Hall coefficients, resistivities, and carrier mobilities were determined as a function of composition. Dislocations were revealed by an electrolytic etch, and the crystals were found typically to contain 2 to 4 x 105 dislocations per sq cm. Microhardness measurements were performed; no maximum in the Vickers hardness us composition curve was seen. Mass spectrometry was used for impurity analyses, and the crystals were found to contain 1 to 2 x 1017 total p-type impurities per cubic centimeter. Distribution coefficients were calculated for the major impurities which were Na, Mg, Al, Si, Cl, and Zn. RECENTLY interest has been stimulated in the preparation and characterization of many alloys of the binary compound semiconductors. This interest is due primarily to the almost unlimited possibilities of adjusting the semiconducting characteristics of these materials by varying the alloy compositions. One alloy system which has been receiving extensive investigation is the PbTe-SnTe system, since these alloys show promise of being useful as emitters and detectors of electromagnetic radiation in the spectral range of 8 to 14 µ. This paper reports on the growth of PbTe-SnTe single crystals by the Czochralski technique and investigations of the general properties of these crystals. The phase diagram of the PbTe-SnTe system was investigated so that specific alloy compositions could be attained. I) CRYSTAL GROWTH The PbTe-SnTe single crystals were pulled from the melt using the Czochralski technique. Generally, the crystals were grown from near-stoichiometric melts, although special growth runs were made from both lead-rich and tellurium-rich melts. Growth of single crystals from up to 5 pct lead-rich melts presented no problems; however, melts with tellurium in excess of -1 pct caused volatilization problems which generally made crystal growth impossible. All melts were prepared from high-purity materials as follows: 1) lead— 6 N— Cominco (Cominco Products, Inc., Spokane, Wash.); 2) tin—5N—Cominco; and 3) tellurium— 5N+— American Smelting & Refining Co., Plainfield, N.J. No further purification of materials was undertaken in this study. The elements were reacted at -1000°C in a vacuum-sealed silica tube for a few hours, a gentle rocking action being used to ensure thorough reaction. The cast ingots were then transferred to a silica crucible for crystal growth. A schematic diagram of the growth apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. THE hot working of chromium was first reported by Hunter and Jones; who used small pellets of the material obtained by the reduction of chromium chloride with sodium. Later, the working of chromium at 600° to 1100°C was reported by Marden and Rich,2 and at 1250°C by Kroll3 The hot rolled material3 had a Brinell hardness of about 150 (62.5 kg, 2.5 mm ball, 1 min) and was brittle at room temperature. Except for that associated with hardness indentations, no plastic flow in chromium at room temperature has been reported to the author's knowledge. Studies described here have shown slip markings in chromium after deformation at room temperature.

Lieut. Louis J. Brunel, now in France, was commissioned on July 27, 1917, as Second Lieutenant in the Engineers Reserve Corps, assigned to the 7th U. S. Engineers, Dec. 10, 1917, and has been with the American E. F. since Mar. 26, 1918. He was assigned to the staff of the General commanding the 5th Field Artillery Brigade, as Engineer Officer, on Aug. 6, 1918. E. Ross Housholder writes that "the record for pontoon bridge building was broken Sept. 25, 1918, by Section A, Co. 4, 5th Engineer Officers' Training School, at Camp Humphreys, Va., of which I am a member. The time was 15 min. 11 3/5 seconds. We then proceeded to break the record for dismantling in 9 min. 57 1/5 seconds. The length of the bridge section was 200 ft. The post band was sent out to meet us, and we feel proud of this record. I have met quite a few A. I. M. E.

As processes for handling low-grade or complex ores become more complicated and as new methods are found, the need arises for more complete and detailed pilot-plant studies to protect the capital investment required for a full-scale plant. Occasionally a process is firm technically, but there is a need for a demonstration plant that will convince nontechnical men of the wisdom of investing in a full-scale operation.
