White, "The Mining Town," Alta California August 18,1873 INTRODUCTION One of the most important aspects of mineral enterprises of US corporations is the influence of the depletion allowance on cash flow. This allowance permits mineral producers to claim sizable federal income tax deductions not available to other industries, and these deductions significantly increase cash flows in mining. In the past several years the minerals depletion allowance has come under increasingly heavy fire from many sectors as a tax loophole that deprives the federal government of large amounts of revenue. One estimate of the loss of tax dollars in 1968 was $2.25 billion due to depletion deductions and intangible expenses in the oil industry. Largely on the basis of such arguments, the Tax Reform Act of 1969 reduced percentage depletion rates for a number of minerals, and the Tax Reduction Act of 1975 totally eliminated statutory depletion for most oil and gas. In regard to percentage depletion for hard minerals, the federal government has estimated its resulting loss of revenue at $1.75 billion for 1980. The TEFRA legislation of 1982 further reduced the statutory depletion allowance available to iron ore, coal, and lignite beginning in 1984. Thus, it is clear that minerals engineers and managers should have a thorough knowledge of the origin, evolution, justification, and computational procedures relating to the depletion allowance. ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF THE DEPLETION ALLOWANCE

A heat of electrolytic iron, to whzch alunzinutn and nitrogen had been added, was hot-rolled, cold-rolled 90 pct, and recrystallized at temperatures from 500" to 700°C. Primary recrystallization textures appear to arise from competitive growth of two types of nuclei: 1) those having orientations belonging to the "usual" primary recrystallization texture found in riming steel, and 2) those with the {111} (110) ovientation. Development of a (111}(1 10) component in the primary recrystallization texture occurs only over a certain interval of isothermal recrystallizatzon temperatures when the material is supersaturated with respect to the precipitation of AlN. Lowering the degree of supersaturation depresses the temperature interval in which a (111)(110) component occurs. An elongated, 'pancake-shaped" recrystallized pain structure and a marked delay in the start of recrystallization were found in all specimens which were supersaturated with respect to A1N precipitation after cold work, regardless of their recrystallization texture. ONE of the consequences of killing low-carbon steel with aluminum is a significant change in recrystallization behavior. About 15 years ago, Solter and eatttiel showed that this behavior was largely controlled by aluminum and nitrogen in the steel. If complete precipitation of A1N was prevented before cold rolling, an increased "recrystallization temperature" was observed in subsequent. annealing, and the recrystal-lized grains were not equiaxed. Leslie et a1.2 studied this phenomenon in some detail and clearly demonstrated the relationship between A1N precipitation, recrystallization kinetics, and the development of "pancake-shaped" grains. It has also been known for some time that aluminum-killed steels, processed to produce elongated "pancake" grains, develop a (11 I}( 110) primary recrystallization texture. This texture has not been found in iron or low-carbon rimming steel as a primary texture4j5 but has been observed following grain growth in electrolytic iron.5 The present work was undertaken to study in more detail the effect of A1N supersaturation on recrystallization textures in iron. LITERATURE REVIEW The deformation texture in heavily rolled iron has been studied in detail by Bennewitz.~ The texture consists primarily of a partial fiber texture about a (110) axis in the rolling direction, designated here as fiber texture A. It includes the range of orienta- tions (111)[110] - (001)[ 110] - (11l)[110]. A weak secondary texture also is present.6 This is a duplex partial fiber texture about two (110) fiber axes located 60 deg from the rolling direction and 30 deg from the sheet normal. The range of this texture, designated here as fiber texture B, about the [101} fiber axis is (112)[110] - near (545)[252] - (211:1[011] *The range given here follows Bennewit~.~ A few pole figures from re-crystallized material indicate a broader range than this.' However, the components which are strongest in the recrystallization texture are in this range.'________________________________________________________ Primary recrystallization textures in unkilled steels can be accounted for by growth of members of fiber texture B present in the deformed metal.5 However, while members of fiber texture B dominate the primary texture, other orientations survive primary recrystallization as well. In particular, some {111}(110) members of fiber texture A must also grow during primary recrystallization, because a well-defined {1ll)( 110) texture develops during subsequent grain growth at 700°C.5 The unusual recrystallization behavior of deformed supersaturated solid solutions has been attributed to: 1) retention of the solute in solution,' 2) formation of coherent, preprecipitation solute clusters prior to and during re~r~stallization,~ and 3) formation of a precipitate prior to and concurrent with recrystallization.'~-'~ When aluminum is supersaturated with iron, the difference in grain boundary mobility between general high-angle boundaries and certain special coincidence site boundaries is apparently eliminated.' In aluminum-killed steels, precipitation of A1N can take place at ordinary subcritical recrystallization temperatures. The rate of precipitation increases with increasing aluminum or nitrogen contents.2'13 There is some doubt, however, as to whether true precipitates form during the time at temperature needed to complete recrystallization. Leslie ef a1.2 found that precipitation in one steel was complete after about 100 min at 700GC, or after about 1000 min at 650GC, as measured by chemical analysis for AlN. Aoki et a1.,13 using internal friction for dissolved nitrogen, showed that a large fraction of the dissolved nitrogen was removed from solution within a few minutes annealing time at temperatures from 400" to 800°C. However , the rate of formation of AlN, as detected bv chemical analvsis. was much slower than the apparent rate of nitrogen removal. Hasebe,'~~ using carbon extraction replicas, has identified A1N precipitates by electron diffraction in a 0.2 C steel, solution-treated at 1300°C and annealed 2 hr at 700°C. Borchers and kim,I6 also using a replication technique, observed precipitates after annealing treatments as short as 2 min at 640°C. However, Leslie et a1.' state that no A1N precipitate can be seen while recrystallization is being inhibited in aluminum-killed steel.

THE study of the high-temperature oxidation of pure metals, intensively pursued experimentally since the pioneer work of Pilling and Bedworth1 and supplemented by the recent theoretical work of Wagner2 is now well advanced. The important field of low-temperature oxidation-i.e., oxidation extending only through the temper color range of thicknesses with the formation of thin oxide layers in the range from o to 1000-2000 Angstroms-has not, however, reached so satisfactory a state, owing largely to the experimental difficulties that attend the formation and study of thin films; most of the work has been performed on abraded specimens whose surface irregularities approximated the thickness of the films formed. It has been pointed out that the rates of oxidation of different crystal faces are different and that the difference may be related to the orientation relationships that obtain between the metal crystal and the superimposed oxide crystal; it has also been suggested that this orientation dependence should manifest itself in rates of oxidation and perhaps also of corrosion in aggregates bearing preferred orientations. 3,4 An attempt to measure the rates of oxidation of different crystal faces of alpha iron demonstrated this difference in rate,4 but the dependence of rate on orientation was not simple; the method of measuring thickness, consisting of a color comparison with barium stearate multi-films of known thickness, was not wholly satisfactory. For these reasons it was felt that a study of the rate of oxidation of single crystals prepared with surfaces as smooth as possible, using a sensitive method giving true film thickness, should be profitable. Copper was chosen because of the ease of reduction of the primary oxide film and because the orientation relationships between metal and oxide and the composition of the oxide films formed at low temperatures are known; for thin films formed at low temperatures, Cu2O alone occurs.22-24 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Various methods of surface preparation were attempted in order to obtain a surface that would oxidize uniformly and reproducibly. Electrolytic polishing by the method of Jacquet5 and electrolytic and mechanical polishing followed by annealing in vacuum and in purified hydrogen at various temperatures were tested. The procedure finally adopted consisted in a fine metallographic polish followed by an anneal in purified hydrogen at temperatures of 900º to 1000°C. for 12 hr. or more. The surface so produced was very bright and smooth, with no trace of specular etching (though some grain-boundary etching was observed); indeed, fine scratches produced by the final polish were entirely removed by the high-temperature anneal.

Hazardous methane gas in coal mining is receiving increased attention due to the increased US demand for coal which has resulted in the exploitation of deeper seams and the utilization of more productive equipment. Problems posed by methane emission has the Mining Research Division of Continental Oil Co. (Conoco) accelerating efforts that began in the early 1950's with Consolidation Coal Co. (Consol).1 The program's focus is on finding new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas.

OF the four papers that comprise this TECHNICAL PUBLICATION, three are case histories of individual geophysical prospects, subsequently tested by drilling. The bibliography of Dr. Barton's published scientific papers† includes investigaions in physiography and surface geological mapping, as well as his geophysical papers, and from this list it is to be observed that he early recognized the place of different types of geophysical prospecting methods in the search for geological structures of economic importance. Moreover, his viewpoint was not merely that the structures should be found, but that the geophysical data should be examined quantitatively to determine the geometry of the structures. In other words, that although these data are insufficient to deduce a unique form for the structure that caused the effects measured in the data, the engineering computations should be carried-out to give as much of a definite configuration to he structure as the data permitted, in order that the testing of the structures could be conducted in the most economical manner and with the idea that the experience so gained could be later incorporated in the study of structures subsequently found. Dr. Barton continually emphasized the quantitative use of geophysical observations, whereas at the time that he began his specialization in geophysics it was considered sufficient to use observations only qualitatively. He, more than any one else, was responsible for -the first volume on geophysical prospecting issued by the Institute in 1929, and his three articles in that volume stressed the quantitative use of geophysical prospecting. The fourth article in this present TECHNICAL PUBLICATION is a further contribution to this branch of geophysical interpretation, and is a supplement to the paper in the 1929 volume, "Calculations in the Interpretation of Observations with .the Eötvös Torsion Balance." INTRODUCTION The San Manuel mine of Magmacopper Company is located approximately 72 km northeast of Tucson, Arizona. The mine, concentrator, smelter, electrolytic refinery and continuous rod casting are located on the west side of the San Pedro River valley. Ore Production: 58 1W mtpd Production To Date: Over 340 000 000 mt since 1956. Ore Grade: 0.70% net sulfide cu. As conceived at the present time, the San Manuel ore body is the lower half of what was originally an elliptical (In cross sect ion) cylinder same 2400 m long with major and minor cross sectional axes of 1500 m and 760 m. After emplacement, the cylinder was diagonally sliced along its long dimension by the San Manuel fault, which separated it into halves, moving the upper half same 2500 m down dip and bringing a wedge-shaped blanket of tertiary conglomerate into position over the lower segment of the cylinder. The lower segment is the San Manuel ore body. The upper part, moved down dip, is the Kalamazoo ore body. Originally, these were one ore body. The San Manuel ore body is a structurally weak and highly fractured quartz monzonite, the principal ore minerals being chalcopyrite, with small amounts of molybdenite. The present mining method is full gravity diagonal retreat panel caving by block. This is shown on Figure 2 , (Block Sequence 56, 57, 58, 59 --on the following page.) The ore mined is hoisted to the surface for transportation to the concentrator. BLOCK CAVING MINING SEQUENCE HISTORY The San Manuel mine was planned and developed as a full gravity block caving mine. It continues as a full gravity block caving mine. Since its initial start, the major changes in mining have been in the areas of ground support, rate of draw and undercut sequence. Ground weight resulting from block caving plays a dual role. It can cause extensive damage to ex- traction openings, yet it is necessary to break the ore into easily handled size. The ground- weight problem resolves itself into finding ways to make it manageable. The initial early ground support in the production areas consisted of timber sets and various combinations of steel and timber sets. This sup- port system proved unsatisfactory and a new support system utilizing concrete was developed. Concrete support, 30 cm to 45 cm thick, proved satisfactory. Rates of draw were experimented with. A draw rate of 45 cm to 61 cm (32 to 45 mt) per draw point per day was determined as optimum in con- trolling ground weight. Undercut sequence or mining sequence was recognized as a major contributing factor to ground weight. This is the most difficult factor to change. The lead time from primary development to undercut can be as much as two years. Initial Checkerboard Pattern The initial undercut sequence was in a checker- board pattern (Figure 2). Experimental equilibrium vaporization ratios (K values) were obtained for nitrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, ethane and hydrogen sulfide in two natural gas-absorber oil mixtures and in two natural gas-Elk Basin crude oil mixtures. For each mixture of constant over-all composition, data were obtained at 100°, 150° and 200°F and at various pressures in the range 200 to 5,000 psia. Some effects of composition on the K values were obtained to serve as a guide in choosing K's for engineering calculations on other mixtures. The pressure cell used to obtain the data is a new type and is described here for the first time. INTRODUCTION The phase equilibria of complex hydrocarbon mixtures such as natural gases, crude oils and their mixtures have been studied previously for the purpose of finding equilibrium vaporization ratios for the hydrocarbon constitutents. In a few cases, such non-hydrocarbon.: as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide were included in the mixture. studied because they occur. in the fluids obtained from petroleum reservoirs. The increasing occurrerce. of these non-liydrocarbon.; antl their growing economic importance. make it necessary to account for them more accurately in engineering calculation.: than is now possible using the meager published data. The available data for non-hydrocarbons may he classified into two groups: namely, binary mixtures of a hydrocarbon and a non-hydrocarbon. and mixtures containing three or more components, only one of which is a non-hydrocarbon. Amon: the former. phase analyses are available for two nitrogen-HC mixtures, tve carbon dioxide-HC mixtures and three hydrogen sulfide-HC mixtures. Data for more complex mixtures are available as follows: Nitrogen-Methane-Pentane'; Nitrogen-Methane-Hexane,'; Nitrogen-Methane-Heptane'; Carbon dioxide-Natural Gas-Natural Gasorline": Carbon dioxide-Natural Gas-Crude Oil". These data have been used generally lor engineering calculations, often with little regard for their precise applicability because data for the non-hydrocarbons in the complex mixtures being dealt with were not available. The use of K values from binary data for calculation:; involving complex mixtures is open to criticism because such K's are not a function of composition and very often show large differences from the K's for the same components in a complex mixture. Thus the effects of composition must be evaluated when obtaining K's for components in complex mixtures. Poettmann and Katz " varied the carbon dioxide content of their mixture.; from about five to ten mol per cent and found substantially no effect on the K values due to this change. This was not surprising since one might expect that changing a minor com-ponent by * three mol per cent would have little effect. It is more important to find the composition change which have the largest effect on the K values. For example. varying the methane or heptanes — plus compositions over a wide rangr may have a large effect on the K'. of all components in the mixture. Interesting data to this effect were obtained by Eilerts and Smith." It was toward these problems that the experimental data presented here were directed. THE problem of picking the best students for an engineering college can no longer, be considered as simply one of determining the amount of general ability, but rather of finding special aptitudes for scientific work, according to Carl C. Brigham~ a Princeton University professor, who has been conducting researches on methods of selecting engineering undergraduates at Cooper Union, an evening school in New York City. When we first began this investigation seven years ago," says Dr. Brigham, "we thought the whole job would be done a soon as we had found a good method of measuring general intelligence. Today we feel that we are still about five years away from a solution, but on somewhat firmer footing than when we were looking for general ability.

INTRODUCTION The Oxford Dictionary says that the word "promoter" has usually been used in an opprobrious sense since at least 1876. This popular image of mining promoters is of cigar-chomping shysters and Brooklyn-Bridge vendors, improving their standard of living with the aid of funds raised through the sale of stock to little old ladies. It is unfortunate that mining promoters are considered crooks until they can prove their integrity and honesty by finding a mine. A common rule of thumb states that for every 1,000 prospects, 100 come to be drilled, and one becomes a mine. However, it is also a statistic that there have been mining promotions, where money raised has gone elsewhere than into the ground; Junior exploration companies can be handy vehicles for unscrupulous financial activity. One must remember though that every stock exchange has had its share of sound mining promotions that, because of the one in 1,000 odds, have failed for legitimate reasons. The promoter must be able to rationalize the worth of a mineral discovery which, on an industry- average basis, probably cost more to find than the discounted value of its net return, which return is not an assured percentage of invested capital, and furthermore, is ultimately from a wasting asset. So, it is easy to understand why the promoter must constantly justify the credibility of his operation to his grubstakers during the course of the "five phases of exploration," those being (1) euphoria, (2) disillusionment, (3) search for the guilty, (4) punishment for the innocent, and (5) distinction for the uninvolved. The promoter with the exploration organization that does not have the benefit of positive cash flow, by definition for the sake of this article, works for a promotional outfit, a Junior Company, that must raise its exploration budget from a variety of sources. Promotion, as discussed here, will not entirely refer to the formation and operation of a joint- stock company but rather to the overall methods of raising risk capital for mineral exploration ventures from outside sources. THE NECESSITY OF PROMOTION In Canada, the publicly financed Junior Company has had an enviable record of mine-finding success. In the Province of British Columbia alone, the discovery of fifteen out of twenty-four mines has been as a result of the activity of the Junior Company (B. C. & Yukon Chamber of Mines, 1977). In the Province of Ontario, one research study indicated that between 1951 and 1974 the 'Juniors' spent only 28 percent of the total exploration funds but were responsible for 62 percent of all economic discoveries (Freyman, 1978). The reasons for the success of the Juniors are tied to a variety of factors, the main one being personal initiative based on incentive. In other words, the principals, or their employees have 'a piece of the action.' The smaller companies can operate faster and more efficiently than their larger counterparts. The Junior Company is also destined to take some bigger risks, the 'long shots,' many of which efforts by virtue of the Junior's perseverance coupled with a touch of 'ore is where you find it' philosophy, result in major discoveries. The individuals, syndicates, private and publicly financed Junior Companies, because of high costs of exploration and development, cannot hope to finance most mineral prospects all the way to production. Exceptions do exist, those being the lower capital cost, small, high-grade deposits. Private investors and publicly financed Junior companies, therefore, can usually afford to finance most exploration through the initial drill-testing stage. The major resource company will enter a mining deal with a Junior Company usually by way of option or joint venture agreement, and will finance to production to earn an equity in the prospect or the Junior Company or both. The conventional lending institutions, banks and government agencies, will usually only participate through loaning a portion of capital

A review is given of the principles on which recently proposed methods of electric log interpretation in shaly sands are based and of the evidence brought up in support of the theoretical derivations. It is. pointed out that the qualitative techniques suggested to date have a tendency to be too pessimistic in the prediction of the presence of commercial hydrocarbon accumulations. In the quantitative treatment, a new concept is introduced, namely that of strongly reduced activity of the double layer counter ions which are present near the negatively charged rock surfaces. This lemmu when applied to the calculation of the equilibrium concentratiotls of interstitial waters yields a set of very simple relations. The resulting expressions for electrochemical potentials across rock samples appear in satisfactory agreement with laboratory experiments. The formulae obtained for the electrical conductivity of shaly formatioris are of the same form as those arrived at empirirally by previous workers. Combination of the expres.riorls for potentia1s and conductivities gives a direct proof of the Tixier relation which states that for shaly water sands the product of apparent formation water resistivity and apparent formation factor equals the resistivity of the sand 100 per cent .saturated with formalion water and which was verified by the work of Wyllie and Perkins and their co-workers. The relations for the resistivities and spontaneous porer11inI.s have been extended to the case of hydrocarbon hearing shaly formations, thus laying a formal basis for the quantitative interpretation of electric logs in shaly oil sands. INTRODUCTION The presence of disseminated clays in porous rocks saturated with electrolytic solutions has a strong influence on the transference of ions taking place under electrical or chemical potential gradients. Both the electrochemical emf's in evidence on the SP curves of electric logs and the electrical conductivity measured on resistivity logs arc directly dependent on the ionic transference in the interstitial waters of the formations traversed by boreholes. A large number of researches have been carried out on the nature and magnitude of the effects of clays on ionic transference. The most recent of these have been described in papers by McCardell and Winsauer,1 2 Wyllie and Southwick,3 poupon, Loy, and Tixier,4 and by Perkins et al.5 Most of these authors consider the effects of the clays as due to the fixed negative charges on the clay lattice. These charges cause the formation of diffuse surface layers with a high concentration of positive ions. The internal solution of the shaly reservoir rock has therefore a different ionic composition and concentration than the electrolyte with which it is in equilibrium (connate water produced from the formation or mud filtrate by which the formation is invaded). To calculate the equilibrium concentration of the internal solution, use is made of the Donnan6 relation, which states that the mean ionic activities of the internal solution and of the external electrolyte must be equal. Pfleider, University of Minnesota I would like to ask Bob Merrill whether he considers that horizontal concave curvature of a slope has any stabilizing effect, such as Jenike 1 suggested several years ago. R. H. Merrill, U. S. Bureau of Mines, Denver Federal Center The stabilizing effect is due to the restraint offered to radial movement by the curvature. We found in laboratory tests that if we constrained the rock with the same stresses as those measured in the pit then it would sustain a maximum stress about two or four times greater than when the same rock type was unconstrained. We are therefore definitely of the opinion that a constrained situation in a slope is favorable towards stability. G. A. Leonards, Purdue University I was interested in Mr. Lane's observations concerning the correspondence between rate of slide movement with rise of reservoir. Perhaps the most interesting feature is that the rate of movement at the time the rock slope failed was less than the rate at an earlier time when it did not fail. This is difficult to explain from current slope stability theory. K. S. Lane, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers I believe that reduced rate of movement is the result of the progressive type of failure, such as described by Patton and Deere. which occurs along the sliding surfaces. It is difficult to analytically define the progressive failure condition for inclusion in slope stability conditions, but its existence should be recognized in design. We should also realize that many apparently stable slopes undoubtedly contain overstressed regions. To design a slope with no overstressed region would be uneconomical and conservative. D. H. Deere I would pose the question-"What is the meaning of a factor of safety of one?" We were involved in the design of a large, irregularly shaped, underground cavity with an unsupported span of several hundreds of feet. Tests on rock specimens indicated a strength of 1300 lb per sq in. The RQD would have been between 90 to 100 percent indicating excellent structural continuity. In-situ stress determinations indicated an approximately hydrostatic state of stress at a level of 1400 lb per sq in. Calculation of stress concentrations at the walls indicated that the stresses there would be about 3000 to 4000 lb per sq in. Admittedly the rock is in a confined condition everywhere except at the very skin of the wall and the rock walls would thus on the average be somewhat stronger. Allowing for the effect of restraint the factor of safety was found to be less than 0.5 over a region several feet into the wall. Construction was started, using rockbolts only to support the walls. Data about shipments in this county are more plentiful than in most others. Canal records, although not complete, are available for 1837-1840, 1856-1857, 1859 and 1864. The census figures, and those of the reports of the Secretary of Internal Affairs, are very evidently too .low. Local consumption within the county has always been large, mainly due to the Cambria Iron Company, and other manufacturing plants, in Johnstown; here a large coke supply was made from coal directly from the mines, neither coal or coke being handled by any outside transportation agency. All available data is shown in Table 35.

Gentlemen:-I herewith present a report on some of the more important activities of the Institute for the year 1921. The present incumbent took. over the active management of the Secretary's office on the first of July and his, work was facilitated, while becoming acquainted with the routine of the office, by the constant and., kindly assistance of the former, Secretary, Mr. Stoughton, during the following three months, and that no interruption occurred inn its regular and smooth operation is due to him and to the Assistant Secretary, who has always been ready to give the benefit of his experience and assistance. MINING AND METALLURGY Through the efforts of President Ludlow and the generous assistance of one of our members, coupled with the excellent work of Major Barbour, MINING AND METALLURGY has, during recent months, shown constant improvement, which could not have taken place, however, had it not been, for the support given by a number of our contributing members. We have every reason to feel encouraged with respect to the quality of the publication and its cost of production. For the year 1921, the net cost of MINING AND METALLURGY was about fifty cents per member, per annum. Occasional letters are received criticizing the Board for producing this publication, but they are more than offset by letters of approval. When the, full purpose of the publication is appreciated, criticism ceases. The elimination of MINING AND METALLURGY and reversion to free distribution of all papers to all members, whether desired or not, would mean such a heavy additional expense that the number of papers would have to be much curtailed. The generous cooperation of members in sending for only such papers as they particularly desired has saved, the Institute thousands of dollars. A plan is being worked out that will materially assist in securing a prompt distribution to members of all pamphlets dealing with subjects in which they are especially interested.

FIFTY years ago the Utah Copper enterprise at Bingham was just getting under way. An epic in metal mining was in the making. Throughout the West the bonanza deposits were approaching exhaustion and most ore still went direct to smelter. But concentrators were shortly to be constructed for treating milling grade ores, and most important, the pilot plant for the Utah Copper enterprise was being built that year at the mouth of Bingham Canyon. The same decade was to see development at the Inspiration mine in Arizona of the most important new mining method for 50 years to come—undercut block caving. Although the average grade of ore being mined has been declining for 50 years, and wage rates and prices of supplies have been greatly increased, the mining industry has continued to grow and to prosper. Technology has advanced to a point where minerals can be mined under the most severe conditions. The hardest rock can be drilled and broken and the heaviest ground handled. Large or small, an ore-body can be mined successfully, at any desired rate of production. It is possible to pump great volumes of water and to ventilate the most extensive workings; air conditioning has made practicable the mining of ore where the rock temperatures are beyond those that can be borne by man. Mining today in the U. S. is a huge earth-moving operation. In 1953 nearly 2 billion tons of material were mined for direct use or for processing. Stripping at open-cut mines totaled about 1.7 billion cu yd. Table I gives relative tonnages of the branches of the mineral industry in 1953. In addition to the solid materials moved, 350 million tons of petroleum and 340,000 tons of gas were produced in 1953. Fifteen million tons of salt and 5 million tons of liquid sulphur were pumped from wells. An appreciable amount of copper was recovered by leaching old mine workings and dumps. Total value of minerals produced in 1953 was $14.4 billion: oil and gas $7.6 billion, coal $2.6 billion, nonmetallics $2.4 billion, and metals $1.8 billion. Formidable problems face some branches of the industry today, especially pertaining to increased output tons per manshift. The time has come when these problems should be reappraised. With current wage rates, the industry no longer can afford to pay men to do manual labor. It should be recognized, also, that the miner is a skilled worker; efforts to promote the dignity of his calling and his pride of accomplishment have yielded beneficial results. Mineral deposits occur under widely varying conditions. In most instances the degree of support needed by the roof and walls is the deciding factor in selection of an underground mining method. The degree of support needed, in turn, is governed by natural physical characteristics of the ore and its enclosing rocks. Mine operators, of course, learn to judge ground by observation, and an experienced mine boss generally can anticipate what will happen following any given mining operation. A more scientific approach, however, would be advantageous in most cases. More should be known about the strength of the ore and the enclosing rocks, more about stresses set up in the ground when ore is removed, and more about the mechanics of moving ground. Better understanding would work both ways: first, favorable rock conditions could be fully utilized for more efficient mining, and second, hazards of rock falls could be minimized, loss of ore in mining reduced, and expenses caused by ground pressures and subsidence lowered. In general, mining comprises breaking the ore or rock in place, supporting the mine workings, and transporting the ore to the surface. This latter is a materials handling problem. Ventilation, of course, must be provided, and the mines must be kept free of water. Development work at some places is the most important cost item in extracting ore. Drilling and blasting remain the usual practice for breaking ore or rock from place except, of course, at block-caving mines. The drilling and blasting practice at a mine must fit the mining method. Evaluation of Ellenburger reservoirs in West Texas has been an uncertain matker at best because of the lack of cores and suitable core-analysis method. Large amounts of oil arc produced from sections from which sample cuttings are obtained that contain litile porosity and no oil saturation. It has long been realized that the formation in some areas contained numerous fractures and solulion cavities that probably contained the major part of the oil present but the magnitude of the porous system conltaining oil has been unknown. Diamond coring cquipmene, used in the mining industry lor many years, has been developed for oil-field use to obtain high core recovery in fractured dolomite that is not possible with conventional coring equipment. A 36ft section of the core recovered from a fractured Ellenburger reseivoir waS analyzed by a unique but simple method to obtain the first defmite evaluation of one section of the producing formation. The cores and the method of analysis used are described and the results arc discussed in some detail. Discussion The first successful known analyses of cores recovered from the Ellenburger formation in the Permian Basin area were made on cores recovered with the use of diamond core heads. Conventionul coring methods previously used have had lour core recovery and standard methods of analysis have proved to be inadequate for evaluation of those cores that were recovered. Core Descriplion The Ellenburger formation to be dis cussed was cored using diamond core heads and oil-base drilling fluid. Of the total 103 ft cored to a depth of 8893 ft in the Ellenburger, 99 ft or 96 pct was recovered. The dolomite cores were described as gray to white, crystalline to coarscIy crystalline, with chert and calcite inclusions. Occasional shale partings ? to ¼ in. in width were noted. A small amount of green clay was found in some of the coarsely crystalline material. So intergranular porosity was found by inspection in any of the cores. The core urns highly fractured over most of its length with not more than two continuous feet that failed to contain fractures. The fractures Were nearly vertical and varied in width from those harely visible to as much as one millimeter. The rate of extraction of silica from certain Wisconsin and Minnesota taconites was investigated by autoclave digestion in sodium hydroxide solutions over the temperature range from 296° to 416°F. Rates obtained were from 7 to 254 g mol per cm2 per sec giving activation energies from 15,000 to 19.000 cal per mol. Activation energy was found to increase with increase of sodium hydroxide concentration. Digestion of different forms of quartz indicated the rate of extraction to be solely a function of surface area under similar conditions of digestion. The results of an experimental investigation on the caustic extraction of silica from certain Wisconsin and Minnesota taconites were presented in a recent publication.' It was shown that residual concentrates containing as much as 65% iron can be produced by this method. The occurrence of silica as a micro-crystalline variety of quartz with high specific surface area gave correspondingly high mean rates of extraction in solutions of sodium hydroxide. The present paper extends this previous work by presenting the results of a study of the specific rates of extraction of silica from these ores as related to temperature, sodium hydroxide concentration and variety of quartz. Calculated activation energies for the dissolution of silica are presented and some possible mechanisms are discussed. TACONITES The low-grade siliceous iron ores investigated included taconite from the Wisconsin Gogebic range and a semi-taconite2 from the Minnesota Mesabi range. These are adequately described in the former paper1 and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The principal iron minerals are hematite (Fe2O3) and goethite (Fe2O3 . H2O), while the gangue is essentially a microcrystalline variety of quartz. Minor amounts of other minerals are present. Typical analyses show the Wisconsin taconite to contain approximately 28% Fe and 54% SiO2 and the Minnesota semi-taconite 39% Fe and 39% SiO2. Analyses of the actual samples used are given in Table I. The taconite samples were prepared for digestion by reducing the original ore to minus 200 mesh in a Braun pulverizer. QUARTZ Three varieties of quartz were studied in the investigation: Ottawa sand, chert and chalcedony. The Ottawa sand was obtained from the Ottawa Silica Co. The chert and chalcedony came from Wards Natural Science Establishment. A minus 200 plus 400 mesh fraction of the Ottawa sand, used as a surface area standard, was repeatedly washed in hot concentrated hydrochloric acid followed by distilled water before autoclaving. The other two varieties were used directly after grinding through 200 mesh in a laboratory hammer mill. Analyses of these samples appear in Table 11. Microscopic examination of the silica samples by the oil immersion method showed that the Ottawa sand consisted of clean, uniform spheres of quartz with little deviation in size from a mean diameter of 82µ determined by a distribution count. The other two varieties consisted almost entirely of microcrystalline aggregates of quartz crystals; the aggregates ranged from 10 to 70µ. The following investigation was undertaken to develop a method for determining with reasonable accuracy the depth of overburdens of 100 ft. or less. Seismic methods seemed to offer good possibilities. The problem differed from that of the familiar salt-dome location in that the depth of overburden to be determined is much less than is encountered in oil prospecting. This means that a much shorter time interval must be measured with accuracy. Refraction methods seem at present to offer greater possibilities than reflection. The air sound persists for from 0.1 to 0.5 sec., because of echoes, and seismic reflections coming during this time are difficult to detect. A seismometer sensitive to vertical vibrations only offers possibilities and has been used here with some success. It is hoped that the application of this type of seismometer to reflection shooting in this region may be investigated still further. The apparatus used consisted of a carbon-button seismometer followed by a three-stage, transformer-coupled, vacuum-tube amplifier and a General Radio string oscillograph. Time marks are provided by a 1000-cycle, 600-r.p.m., synchronous motor provided with five spokes which intercept the light to the camera at 1/50 sec. intervals. This motor is driven by a two-stage vacuum-tube amplifier of 3 watt output, actuated by a tuning fork. The power supply for the seismometer amplifier is one 2-volt storage and one 45-volt B battery. The motor amplifier is powered by a 6-volt storage battery and 6 to 225-volt, 15-watt motor generator. The temperature-frequency characteristics of the tuning fork have been determined and for ordinary working temperatures the error in time that would be introduced is less than M millisecond for time intervals up to 100 milliseconds. The impact is produced by a sledge blow for surface distances less than 100 ft. and dynamite for greater distances. Two steel balls with wires attached form an electric circuit through a 1-ft. piece of railroad rail upon which they rest. Price is a complicated concept, for price is both a cause and an effect. This reciprocal aspect is commonly overlooked and the oversight is the source of many economic maladjustments. Price is the resultant of the ratio between supply and demand, but it differs from a mathematical concept of a proportion, by itself constituting an economic force which continuously alters the elements that determine the relationship. Price, therefore, is not merely the outcome of other forces but is in its own right one of the most powerful of economic agents. Price accordingly does not play a passive role; nor can it be sterilized or rendered inactive. In consequence, price cannot be fixed or at least kept fixed, except by the elimination of all freedom of choice on the part of producers and consumers. A primary objective of all economic activity is equilibrium. The same is true of a unit of economic activity, the single industry. The plane upon which equilibrium centers may shift in the course of time, but equilibrium itself is the point of departure and the point of return. If an industry is in equilibrium, that industry is operating effectively. The motivating forces of an industry—profits or the common good—are not to be confused with the prerequisite of equilibrium, but this mistake is often made. The producer is dominated by the profit motive; the consumer, or his collective representative, by the general welfare motive. No one is the advocate for equilibrium; that status is supposed to be arrived at automatically. If the forces of competition are perfectly free, such is the tendency. Equilibrium For the purposes of this analysis, equilibrium needs to be broadly defined and is conceived to involve: (1) balance between supply and demand; (2) internal equipoise amongst the elements within an industry; and (3) symmetry in respect to the whole economy. This definition implies flexibility and case of adjustment; a ready accommodation to change. Equilibrium does not postulate profits or nonprofits, social objectives or the lack of them.
