THE type of gas producer in which the ashes are fluxed and run off as slag was among the very earliest made. Ebelmen built the first one in 1840 at Audincourt, France, only a year after the installation of the first gas producer of which we have record. Charcoal was used as the fuel, with blast-furnace slag and clay is flux. My interest in this type of producer began when as a boy I saw the fluxing producer at Chester, N. J., which was invented by W. J.. Taylor, and described by him in 1881.1 This producer was invented independently by Mr. Taylor to meet the difficulties he experienced in making producer gas for roasting sulphurous iron ores. It will be of interest to review briefly his description of his producer. It was built like a small blast furnace, having a hearth 24 in. in diameter and 24 in. high. The bosh angle was 25° from the vertical; the diameter at the bosh 4 ft. and at the top 3 ft.; the total height 12 ft. The producer contained one water-cooled tuyere 12 in. above the bottom, with a 1.5-in. nozzle.. Depth of the coal above the tuyere; 6 ft. Mr. Taylor mixed the coal with from 30 to 40 per cent. of basic blast-furnace slag to flux the ash. Occasionally some limestone was also used, but never limestone alone, as the use of the furnace cinder gave a larger volume of slag and made it easier to maintain a proper fluidity. . The producer was blown with a small Weimer blowing engine, delivering 300 ft. of air per minute, at from 1 to 1.5 lb. pressure. The slag was tapped every 2 hr. and was black and glassy in appearance. Broken or egg size anthracite was used. The fine sizes of anthracite could not he made to work. Mr. Taylor expressed the belief that bituminous coal could be used if not too fine, but no experiments were made with this coal. Runs were made of four weeks' duration, with no stops or changes. THE One Hundred and Twenty-sixth meeting-of the Institute, held in San Francisco, Sept. 25 to 29, 1922, was a success in every way. Character-istically, San Francisco presented climate suited, to the occasion, while the Committees on Arrangements left nothing undone that would contribute to the interest and entertainment of the members and their wives. There was a registration of over 230, and all sections, save three, were represented. In the technical meetings, under the leadership of Albert Burch in the mining session and C. W. Merrill in the milling session, the greatest interest was manifested in ore-hunting geology and modern ore-dressing methods. The general geologic phase developed numerous discussions and had for its aim the study and correlation of known data and the application-of these to the finding of commercial orebodies. The geologic features of the Comstock and their significance to the development of the present orebodies were discussed. This brought out matters of much technical interest as well as those of romantic nature in the history of the early life of that camp. The profitable application of modern milling methods to ores, non-commercial a short time ago, was discussed with much interest. The recent work on the Comstock ores occupied a conspicuous part in these discussions. Basic principles delineated by mathematical study of mechanical devices for the milling of ore came in for a prominent part in the program as well as the physical-chemical side of the processes devised for the winning of precious metals as a profit.

The feasibility of producing composites containing nickel or molybdenum fibers in a beryllium matrix was inrestigated. The composties studied were jabricaled by powder mallurgical techniques. The 1-mil-diarr nickel fibers reacled completely below 900°C, converling the fibers .from nickel to Ni5Be2,. As the /LO/-pressing temperalure as raised above 1110oC, tlie nickel diffused outward from the beryllide fibers. The solid solubility of nickel in beryllium was clboul 20 wt pet at the 1100°C pressing temperature a1 the zone-fiber interface. The 1.5-mil-diam molybdenum fibers slzolred no evidence of reaction and little evidence of diffitsion after pressing at 900°C. Between 1000° and 1050°C pressing conditions, the fibers began lo react , producing 1ayers of MoBe2 and MoBe12, respectively surrounding the molybdenurn core. The struture remained the same at 1100°C with no evidenre of solid solubility of the molybdenum in the berylium or vice versa. In recent years a considerable amount of attention has been devoted to the determination of methods for improving the mechanical properties of materials through the use of fiber or whisker reinforcement. Previous work with metal matrix composites indicates that the study of the chemical compatibility of the fiber and matrix is an area requiring greater understanding. The metal-metal or ceramic-metal interface is frequently subject to chemical reactions that may result in the formation of hard brittle intermetal-lic compounds and/or low melting point eutectic compositions. The reaction products may reduce both the low-temperature and elevated-temperature strength of the composite by weakening the fiber-matrix bond, producing premature failure at the interface. It is well-known that most metal-metal systems and many metal-ceramic systems of interest for structural composites are thermodynamically unstable,'-" particularly at elevated temperatures. If, however, the rate of reaction under the conditions of fabrication is sufficiently low. composites can be fabricated that can be used efficiently for indefinite periods at low temperatures and for short periods at elevated temperatures. This paper presents the results of a series of tests to determine the compatibility of nickel and molybdenum fibers with beryllium at various hot-pressing temperatures. Nickel was selected as a candidate fiber material primarily because the relatively ductile fibers might be useful as crack arresters in applications such as ballistic impact where crack growth can result in catastrophic failure. The high density and the reactivity of nickel were primary factors detracting from its selection as a possible reinforcement. Molybdenum with a modulus of elasticity of 52 Xlo6 psi is one of the few metallic materials having a modulus higher than beryllium (42 X lo6). Its high modulus, coupled with its refractory characteristics, made molybdenum an attractive candidate for a relatively stable fiber reinforcement for beryllium. Its density, being higher than that of nickel and over five times that of beryllium: detracted from its other characteristics. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The specimens were prepared from beryllium powder with a dispersed phase of fibers by powder metallurgical techniques. P-20 grade powder, Table I, from Berylco was used as the matrix material. Short lengths of 0.001-in.-nominal-diam nickel fibers supplied by the Sigmund Cohn Corp. and 0.0015-in.-nominal-diam molvbdenum fibers obtained from the General Electric Co. were used as the dispersed phase. The composite constituents were combined under an argon atmosphere by mechanically mixing the powders and fibers. The compositions used were nominally 1 vol pct fibers. After mixing. the composites were hot-pressed into a-in.-diam pellets under an argon atmosphere at 900°, 1000". 1050". and 1100°C at a pressure of 6000 psi with no hold time at these temperatures so that a comparison could be made between the resultant microstructure and hot-pressing temperature. The billet was heated at a rate on the order of 30°C per min to the desired temperature and then cooled at a somewhat slower rate. The microstructure obtained should be considered as characteristic of the integrated time-temperature history of the sample, as well as the maximum temperature attained. Upon removal from the hot-pressing dies. the specimens were cut. mounted. and polished by standard procedures. No etchant was used in specimen preparation. Photomicrographs, electron microprobe scans, and electron back-scatter pictures were made. X-ray dif-fractometer patterns were made of several of the specimens. but only the lines for beryllium could be resolved. Specimens for optical and electron microprobe examination were selected partially for the roundness of the cross section. A round cross section was taken to indicate that the body of the fiber was approximately normal to the surface and that therefore effects due to fiber material immediately below the surface could be neglected. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The microprobe scans indicated that nickel reacted as low as 900°C, converting the entire fiber cross section to NisBe21. Fig. l(a). There was no evidence of further reaction from the optical or the back-scatter pictures, Figs. 2(n) and 3(a).

In1950 studies concerning mining and milling of the approximately 17 million tons of ore remaining at Outokumpu revealed the surface facilities for economical treatment were inadequate. The two shafts would soon be too far from the mine workings. Moreover, in spite of several extensions, mill capacity was insufficient and recoveries were not satisfactory. Therefore it was decided in 1951 to sink a new shaft and to build a new mill and auxiliary surface buildings around the shaft. The new shaft was sunk near the center of the remaining orebody, about 650 ft from the ore to the footwall side. This location placed the main part of the shaft as well as the crusher rooms and the ore bins around the lower end of the shaft in the firm and strong mica-schist.

The industry of producing and processing boron compounds is called the borax industry because the chief product is borax, the decahydrate of disodium tetraborate. For the same reason, it is common to speak of borax mining. Reference to borate mining also is common, and while appropriate where it emphasizes the diversity of borate minerals that are mined in various countries, it is rather unsatisfactory where used in a general sense, because it seems to exclude the important production of borax from brine at Searles Lake, California, and of boric acid from steam vents in Tuscany, Italy. The terms "boron industry" and "boron mining" might seem more comprehensive, but are little used, and this is fortunate because they would be misleading-the element boron is manufactured only in small amounts for special uses, and it is not found free in nature. In most occurrences, boron is combined with oxygen and is in a borate or borosilicate material. The history of the modem borax industry starts with the introduction into Europe of borax from Tibet in the 13th century, about the time of Marco Polo, if not actually by him. The discovery that borax has unique value as a flux in metal soldering and ceramic glazing must have been made at some unknown time much earlier. As a rule, any mineral that has been used so long that its early history is lost must occur in deposits that are easily recognized and worked, and this is undoubtedly true of borax in Tibet. According to meager accounts,9 the borax occurs there in arid mountain basins as surficial crusts that coat the ground about thermal springs and seeps of mineralized water, and as coarser crystals in the bottom muds of shallow pools and lakes. Much the same essential features of surface exposures and minerals easy to recognize and recover characterize most of the deposits later found and worked elsewhere. The borax industry at the present time is faced with rising demands for its products, and consequently is increasing its productive capacity and appraising its borate resources.18 The areas that contain the known borate deposits are most likely to yield additional production, hence their distribution in the world is of interest, and is summarized later in this chapter. Mineralogy The mineral raw materials used by the borax industry include various borates mined in several countries, borax extracted from brines at Searles Lake in California, and boric acid extracted from the steam of vents in Tuscany in Italy. The hydrated borates[$] of chief commercial importance are listed in Table 1, which also shows their chemical composition. The properties of only the four most important borates are summarized here, but detailed descriptions of the borates and the minerals commonly found with them can be found in mineralogy textbooks.41 Ulexite generally forms clusters of silky fibers rather than large individual crystals. The following scanty notes on the Roumanian oil-region may serve as an introduction to more detailed future study and description. The Roumanian oil-belt follows the outer edge of the sweep of the Carpathian mountains, and may, in a broad sense, be regarded as a prolongation of the Galician belt. It is distributed over a tract of country from 300 to 400 miles in length, with a width of from 15 to 20 miles, and is believed to cover an area of at least 20,000 hectares (49,420 acres). The governmerit claims that 16,000 to 17,000 hectares of its land is petroliferous. The primary deposits of petroleum arc considered to be in the Paleogene (Oligocene) and the Neogene (the salines of the Miocene) formations. Most of the other repositories, especially those of Muntenie, are only secondary, the petroleum there having been introduced by the orogenic movements which raised the Carpathian mountains. The oil-field has been divided by the Roumanian Survey into two regions, the Flysch and the Sub-carpathian, as is shown in the accompanying sketch-map, Fig. 1. So far as is yet known, practically all the seepages and productive pits and wells are situated on anticlinals. TO accommodate a large tonnage at high speed from a single level at San Manuel, a very flexible haulage system was designed to give maximum access to stoping areas, minimize delays, and pro- vide for safety. With these requirements as a guide, the haulage was laid out as a simple double loop with one-way traffic of continuous pull. These loops consist of two parallel drifts 100 ft apart, center to center. Haulage drifts are numbered from north to south, the northernmost being the No. 1 drift. This holds true on both the North and South haulage loops. Haulage drifts are connected at 1000-ft intervals with crossovers so that it is possible to bypass any given section that may be inaccessible. Two of these turnouts are double diamonds, one located on the approach to the rotary dumps at the hoisting shafts and the other on the departure from the dumps. The turnout on the approach or North haulage is 835 ft in front of the rotary dump, and the one on the departure, or South haulage, is 1058 ft from the dump. This type of turnout allows trains coming down either haulage drift No. 1 or No. 2 to be routed into either shaft and expedites movement by avoiding delays due to congestion in the dumping area. The double diamond on the return haulage loop facilitates returning empty ore trains to the panels.

DOCTOR Albert Sauveur, distinguished scientist and Honorary Member of this Institute, predicted in the first Howe Memorial Lecture that the privilege of delivering this annual address would be considered a highly significant honor. The intervening years have well borne out Sauveur's prophecy. I wish to assure the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers that I also deeply appreciate this honor, recognizing at the same time the present and even more the future responsibilities with which it is accompanied. Several of the previous lecturers had the good fortune to attend the classes of Professor Howe and to work in his laboratories. I was similarly favored, although in my instance and to my great regret the period was all too short. However, Howe's book, published in 1903, "Iron, Steel and Other Alloys," afforded me abundant opportunity to continue these studies. How well I remember the inspiration I derived from this famous book by Howe, the metallurgical master, pioneer, and educator! Remembering that Professor Howe contributed numerous papers to The Metallographist, a magazine supported from a technical point of view by the world's pioneers in metallography, I was curious a few days ago to learn the nature of Howe's early contributions to this magazine. The first paper by Howe in the first year of The Metallographist (1898) dealt with the allotropic theory; the second also treated of allotropy, and I quote the first sentence of that paper: The allotropic theory of the hardening of steel may, like so many other important theories, have to be accepted or rejected not on direct proof or disproof, but on the accumulation of circumstantial evidence for or against it. Howe's ability to stimulate others by his deep understanding and clarity of expression was truly remarkable; but just as striking was his intuitive judgment concerning the implications of metallurgical data in the arts and sciences. It therefore seems fitting that this lecture comprise a broad treatment of the subject chosen, rather than a closely documented thesis on any one phase of the problem; that in it attention be focused

Fluorspar is found in most of the states from the Rocky Mountains westward, and commercial production of the mineral has been reported from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington. The map in Fig. 1 indicates the general distribution of many of these deposits but it is by no means complete. In the summer of 1926 the writer examined certain deposits of fluorspar in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Washington; in November, 1927, revisited the Jamestown, Colo., district, and in earlier years examined deposits in Colorado and New Mexico. Based on notes of his own and on descriptions and other data by H. A. Aurand, H. W. Davis, R. B. Ladoo, V. C. Heikes, W. D. Johnston, Jr., and by producers of fluorspar, he prepared the following brief descriptions of deposits and estimates of reserves of fluorspar, originally for the use of the subcommittee on fluorspar of the Joint Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy and on Industrial Preparedness respectively of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Descriptions of many fluorspar deposits in various western states and districts have been published. It is not feasible to summarize this literature here, but the appended bibliography will indicate to the interested reader what papers are available. Arizona Fluorspar has been reported as occurring in Arizona in the following localities: near Duncan, Greenlee County; near Naco, Tombstone, and Paradise, Cochise County; Black Mountain, Mojave County; 25 miles southwest of Tucson, and at Helvetia and Silver Bell, Pima County; near Mammoth mine, Pinal County; in Yavapai County, 7 miles from Aguila, and in the Bradshaw Mountains; and near Dome, Yuma County. Production has come principally from the Castle Dome district, Yuma County, with minor quantities from Greenlee, Pima and Yavapai counties. IT was pointed out in an earlier paper1 that our understanding of the atomic mechanism by which diffusion occurs in metallic alloys is scarcely in an advanced state. This unsatisfactory condition is the result not of any lack of interest, but of the difficulty of designing experiments that will yield suitable data. The diffusion coefficient of an alloy, measured in the usual way, is simply a number specifying the rate of homogenization of a nonhomogeneous metal; this number, of itself, can furnish neither the rate at which the individual atoms move nor information as to the mechanism by which they move. It does not necessarily follow, however, that such information cannot he obtained, even if the path to be followed is still not clear. Much success has been attained in the study of diffusion in ionic crystals. A number of experiments, for which there are few counterparts in connection with metals, yields information often indicating a detailed mechanism by which diffusion probably occurs. From such work, quite acceptable theories of lattice imperfections have been developed by Wagner, Schottky, Frenkel, Jost and others.2 It is postulated that real crystals of stoichiometric composition contain, in equilibrium, certain imperfections of which the most important types are: (I) vacant cation sites, with an equal number of interstitial ions; (2) vacant anion sites, with an equal number of interstitial ions; (3) equal numbers of anions and cations in interstitial positions; (4) equal numbers of vacant anion and cation sites. The classification of a particular crystal according to this scheme then follows from studies of the variation of electrical conductivity with pressure of the electronegative component surrounding the crystal, with ion size, and with temperature; other physical phenomena, such as the Hall effect, have aided in establishing the classification. The relative mobility of the anion and cation may be determined by chemical analysis of the salt at the electrodes following electrolysis. With such information, and knowing that one ion never occupies the lattice site normally belonging to an ion of opposite sign, it is usually possible to ascertain the diffusion mechanism. It is clear that the same experiments are not applicable to metal crystals, and substitute experiments that yield as much information have not yet been devised. Much can be learned, however, about the mobilities of the two* kinds of atoms in alloys by the use of radioactive metals as indicators. Only one such experiment has been performed in the past. For a period of several years, and in a large number of oases, the Metallurgical Laboratories of the New Mexico School of Mines were employed in umpire work. During this time many important local problems mere solved. Against the results of careful chemical analyses of ores, assay-returns mere often checked. In many cases the assay-methods of mine and custom-smelter were compared, and both often found faulty for the ore concerned. A wide range of ores was covered. Many of the chemical analyses and assays were made by Dr. F. C. Lincoln, Professor of Metallurgy, now of the Montana State School of Mines. A varied series of instructive assays was prepared by Prof. R. B. Brinsmade, now of the West Virginia State University. Single assays and given series of tests were undertaken by H. T. Goodjohn, now chief chemist to the Cia. Metalurgica de Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico; by H. J. Hub-bard, now superintendent of the Butters Divisadero Mines, Jocoro, San Salvador, C. A.; by E. D. Morton, now superintendent of the Arizona & Nevada Copper Mining Co., at Lunning, Nev.; and by A. W. Edelen, now superintendent of the Angangueo Unit of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in Michoacan, Mexico. A critical comparison of assay-methods that were found to be followed in the case of certain gouge-ores mined in the Mimbres range in New Mexico, and about which there had been much controversy, was made by D. F. Riddell, then Acting Professor of Assaying, and now superintendent of the Providentia Mines Co. of Parral, in Chihuahua, Mexico. To him is due the credit of much that is contained in the following notes, which he has generously permitted to be used in advance of the publication of the complete results.

FACED with processing an increasing volume of raw material through its existing plant, early in 1955 Calaveras Cement Co. of California considered incorporating liquid cyclones in its raw mill grinding circuits. One of many problems was the prospect of handling larger volumes of finished slurry through existing pipelines. Fixed capacities of the mechanical classifiers also placed limits on plant expansion.

Nothing has disturbed the copper- lead-zinc producers in recent years more than smelter tolerances set by some states. What hurt most, copper spokesmen told the Government, was the Government's own erroneous estimates of smelter pollution controls. Government charts indicated that 23 firms smelting copper, lead and zinc may need to invest about $108 million by fiscal 1976 to control stack emissions. The copper industry's independent study, however, indicates that the required controls could cost as much as $550 million to install and $200 million a year to operate.

Reasons are given for using a Boyle's-law porosimeter in conducting core analysis for either routine or research purposes. Among other things, it is pointed out that such a porosimeter permits the measurement of all basic properties on the same sample, thereby eliminating the sources of error inherent in the use of adjacent samples. References are made to investigations of gas adsorption on various porous materials, to show that the use of helium in Boyle's-law porosimeters reduces to negligible proportions the error due to the adsorption or desorption of the operating gas. Two Boyle's-law instruments are described. which permit accurate and rapid measurements of porosity. Schematic sketches and explanation:; are included, along with derivations of equations required in performing precise determinations. Summaries of data obtained during calibration are tabulated and analyses of the data are resented as indications of the precision and accuracy of each device. Comparisons are also shown for measurements made with each of the instruments on the same test pieces and cores. INTRODUCTION An accurate porosimeter, operating on the principle of Boyle's law. is of considerable value in the analysis of cores for either routine or research purposes. This is due primarily to the fact that the measurement of porosity with such an instrument leaves the sample free of contamination by any liquid. When used in conjunction with an extraction apparatus' for determining oil and water saturations, a Boyle's-law porosimeter permits the measurement of all basic properties on the same sample. This eliminates the sources of error inherent in the use of adjacent samples, or the necessity of determining porosity after all other properties have been obtained. Large errors may result from combining measurements made on adjacent samples in order to obtain a single property. This type of error is definitely involved when oil and water are measured with one sample, and the pore vo1ume is measured with an adjacent one. Furthermore, the source of error would be present to some extent, even if the analyst could choose the samples so they were truly adjacent from a geological standpoint. The use of adjacent samples in routine core analysis also necessarily decreases the probability of correlating core properties. For example, the chance of correlating the "irreducible" interstitial-water saturation with permeability, is bound to be greatly reduced by measuring these properties on "adjacent" samples. For research purposes, amplification is scarcely required concerning the greater flexibility of a method for measuring porosity which leaves the core free of contamination by any liquid. Even under those circumstances which require that the core be saturated with a liquid, a previous measurement of porosity with a gas is useful in determining the degree of saturation that has been attained in the process. Furthermore, for comparable accuracy, porosity usually may be determined more rapidly with a gas than with a liquid. This advantage of the Boyle's-law instrument is most outstanding when the determination time is compared with that required in obtaining porosity by evacuation of the core followed by saturation with a liquid of known density. Several porosimeters which operate on the principle of Boyle's law have been described2,3,4,5,6,7 in the literature. No comparison will be attempted between those instruments and the ones described herein. Before helium gas became readily available, Boyle's-law porosimeters were subject to an appreciable error due to the adsorption of the operating gas on the surface of the core solids. There is considerable direct and indirect evidence in the literature to support the contention that the adsorption of helium on porous solids is negligible at room temperature. In discussing the use of Boyle's-law porosimeters, Washburn and Bunting2 stated that "for most ceramic bodies dry air is a satisfactory gas, but hydrogen will be required in some instances. Helium could, of course, be employed for all types of porous materials at room temperatures or above." Howard and Hulett8 obtained evidence that the adsorption of helium was negligible at room temperatures, even on activated carbon ; for the density measured with this gas was unaffected by changes in pressure or by changes in temperature from 25 °C to 75 °C. For oil-well cores, Taliaferro, Johnson, and Dewees" obtained lower porosities with helium than with air, but apparently did not study helium adsorption. From the work of these investigators, it follows that the use of helium in Boyle's-law porosimeters reduces the error due to gas adsorption to negligible proportions. This makes it possible to construct instruments which permit the determination of porosity with (1) a high degree of accuracy, (2) with great rapidity, and (3) without contamination. THE KOBE POROSIMETER The fundamental design of the Kobe Porosimeter was developed by Kobe, Inc., which firm built about 12 of the instruments during 1936 and 1937. Since that time, seven or eight more have been constructed with their permission, making a total of about 20 that have been put into operation.
