This review covers the northern 32 counties of the Texas Panhandle, an area 180 miles square. The westerly three-fourths of the district lies wholly within that great area known as the Llano Estacado or "staked plains." Six of the counties produce oil and gas and three produce gas alone. All of the production is associated with the Amarillo arch, a huge anticline superimposed upon a buried mountain range which is undoubtedly a continuation of the Wichitas of southwestern Oklahoma. Oil Production The production of the Texas Panhandle up to Jan. 1,1930, was slightly over 157 million barrels, 90 per cent. of which came from Hutchinson and Gray counties. About 33,000,000 bbl. was produced during 1930. Though this was about 9 per cent. above the 1929 production, it was over 8,000,000 bbl. less than was produced during the peak year, 1928. The present daily production is slightly over 40,000 bbl., which is the allowable production under state-wide proration. The assumed potential for the purpose of proration is 124,500 bbl. and the actual capacity of the wells probably would be in the neighborhood of 100,000 barrels. The total initial production of the oil wells completed in 1930 was 157,289 bbl. from 308 wells, or 511 bbl. per well, as compared to a 734-bbl. average from the 350 oil wells drilled during the preceding year. The completions in Gray County numbered 232, with an average initial of 614 barrels. Completions During 1930, 526 wells were completed in the Panhandle as compared to a total of 503 during 1929. Of the year's completions, 308 were oil wells, 169 produced gas and 49 were dry holes. Of the 3027 wells drilled in the Panhandle to date, 2780 have produced oil, gas or both, making the ratio of dry holes to producers about 1:11.3. Ignoring the 63 dry holes drilled in nonproductive counties, the ratio becomes 184:2780 or 1:15.1 which is slightly less favorable than that which obtained at the end of 1929.

ALBERT Ladd Colby, who died suddenly of influenza at Torquay, England, on Apr. 30,1924, was born in New York City, on June 26,1860. He was educated in the public schools of New York, at the College of the City of New York, and received the degree of Ph. B. from the Columbia School of Mines in 1881. He continued his studies at Columbia, acting occasionally as assistant to Prof. C. F. Chandler, until 1883. For the next three years he was Assistant Professor of Chemistry in Lehigh University; then head chemist and metallurgical engineer of the Bethlehem Steel Co., at Bethlehem, Pa., occupying the latter position until 1903. As head chemist his active and inventive mind devised several improvements in apparatus for increasing the rapidity and accuracy of the analytical work; as metallurgical engineer, he was, from time to time, in charge of the blast-furnace, open-hearth, bessemer, and puddling departments; he had entire charge of the inspection, assignment, and economic use of all metallurgical materials, and he early gave his attention to the formulation of specifications for metallurgical materials—an activity in which he long held a distinguished part in this country, and as a representative of his own country in England and Europe. He also sewed as expert for his company in patent suits, again laying the foundation for valuable service later as a consulting engineer. In this latter capacity he was excelled by few, if any, contemporaries in the iron and steel industry. His mind was ingenious, thorough, clear, and keen, both in the preparation of evidence and its presentation to the Court. He very quickly appraised the value of evidence, or of an answer to a question, and knew how to secure the infermation, either from the available literature of any language, or by special researches or plant studies. In the executive control of literary research for patent purposes, his long training, infinite capacity for digging through long series of articles in English, German or French, and clear formulation of the vital subject matter for the guidance of assistants, made him invaluable. He was also an adept in collecting information on special branches of his profession. For example, when the science of metallography began to assume importance, he made the first really comprehensive bibliography covering the literature of all siderurgical countries; for the newly formed International Nickel Co. he gathered all the information extant on the subject of nickel steel, both in the literature and in the minds of experts in America and Europe. DITHIOPHOSPHATE collectors are commonly used in the flotation of sulphide minerals. Studies of the interaction of a typical dithiophosphate collector with galena surfaces have been previously reported from. these laboratories." These fundamental studies were carried out by employing phosphorus labeled radioactive dithiophosphate. Radioactivity determinations then could be used to measure readily and accurately the small concentrations of dithiophosphate that, are present under conditions of flotation processes. Measurements were made on ground mineral, determining the amount sorbed indirectly from the concentrations in solution; and studies were also made with single crystals, determining the amount sorbed directly by counting the crystal surface. The rates, isotherms and reversibility characteristics of dithiophosphate sorption, the competition between phosphate and dithiophosphate for the mineral surface, and the exchange of sorbed dithiophosphate with dissolved dithiophosphate were studied. These studies have now been extended by sorption measurements in flotations with a Fagergren, machine. For this work, the selective flotation of galena and sphalerite from quartz was chosen, using ammonium di-(sec-butyl) dithiophosphate as. the collector, sodium cyanide as depressant for sphalerite, and copper sulphate as an activator for sphalerite. While the selective flotation of galena and sphalerite using a single dithiophosphate collector is not typical of flotation practice (two different collectors are generally used), it was found that a reasonably good separation could be obtained by using zinc sulphate with the sodium cyanide in the galena flotation and by cleaning the sphalerite concentrate or by carrying out the sphalerite. flotation in an alkaline medium. Data of practical importance on the distribution of collector between the concentrates, tailings, and solutions were obtained, particularly with regard to the effect of copper sulphate and sodium cyanide. In addition to the. selective flotation of galena and sphalerite from quartz, single flotations of galena-quartz and sphalerite-quartz mixtures were carried out, along with blank flotations on quartz alone. The present paper describes the results of these experiments. As in previous papers, the term sorption is used to designate uptake of collector by the mineral, without implication as to the nature of the processes involved. Experimental Materials: The mineral system was a ground synthetic mixture of galena, sphalerite, and quartz. The galena was from Galena, Kans., and contained 75 pct lead (theoretical 85.6 pct Pb for PbS); the sphalerite, from Ottowa County, Okla., contained 63 pct zinc (theoretical 67.2 pet Zn for ZnS) ; and the quartz from Klondike, Mo., analyzed as 99.97 pet SiO2. Sulphur labeled radioactive di-(sec-butyl) dithiophosphate was prepared from S82 supplied by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory on allocation from the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The synthesis consisted of precipitating barium sulphate, reducing the barium sulphate to barium sulphide, acidifying to form hydrogen sulphide, and oxidizing the hydrogen sulphide with iodine to elemental sulphur.

Silicon films have been grown by chemical reaction on (111) silicon substrates. The surfaces were examined by various microscopic and interfero-metric methods. Surface structures are classified into two groups depending on whether the angles between the bounding planes and the (111) surface are small (<3 deg) or large (> I0 deg). A layer-gvowth mechanism is postulated to explain the topography and the influence of growth parameters. Growth proceeds by lateral expansion of the (111) layers in (211) directions, thereby forming steps. The step edges are perpendicular to the direction of expansion and are thus along (110) directions. Step bunching md surface nucleation both play an important role in modifying the flow pattern and in the step regeneration. These are influenced ver?) much by impurities, especially oxygen. Although the growth is a result of a surface-controlled ga: reaction, it is very similar to growth from an impure solution. OVERGROWTH ("epitaxial growth") of silicon is important and widely used. During the past years several investigators have observed various topographical features or so-called faults on the grown films. A study of the surface morphology gives some insight into the growth mechanism. I) EXPERIMENTAL Silicon films have been grown on silicon substrates by a method described by Theuerer.&apos; Silicon is formed by reduction of SiCl, in hydrogen. The rate of incidence of SiC1, was varied between 5 x 10"6 and 2 x 10&apos;4 moles min-&apos; cm-&apos;. The mole fraction of Sic4 in the Hz-SiCL mixture was about 5 x X Both the rate of incidence and the mole fraction were calculated on the assumption that the Hz bubbling through the SiC1, reached equilibrium saturation. Assuming uniform velocity distribution, the linear velocity of the gas in the reactor tube was estimated to be 2 cm sec-l. The temperature of deposition was varied between 1070" and 1260°C. Chemically polished p-type silicon wafers of 20 to 100 ohm cm resistivity were used as substrates. These were within 1/2 deg of a (111) orientation. The thickness of the grown n-type film was determined by two methods: a) measurement of the depth of the p-n junction taking into account the junction shift due to diffusion, b) measurement of the traces of stacking-fault tetrahedra on the (111) plane.&apos; The agreement between the two methods was better than 20 pct. The rate of growth varied between 0.2 and 4.0 pmin-&apos;. The formed films were examined by reflection and light-section microscopy, and by multiple-beam interferometry. Phase-contrast illumination revealed height differences of about 30A. For measuring heights greater than 1 p a light-section microscope3 was used. The resolution by multipke-beam interferometry4 was between 50 and 100A. Crystallographic directions on the surface were determined by X-ray and from the orientation of etch pits and stacking faults as revealed by Dash etch (I part HI?, 3 parts HNOJ, and 12 parts CH3COOH). Some specimens have been investigated by electron microscopy. Platinum-shadowing and carbon-replica techniques were used to show the fine topography and reflection diffraction to determine the structure of the grown layers. 11) RESULTS The topographical features can be classified into three groups. he first group is comprised of fine ridges (striations). The second group consists of structures, which are bounded by planes making angles of less than 3 deg with the (111) surface. They are, therefore, vicinal planes. Structures which closely resemble growth or etch pyramids from the third group would normally be bounded by perfect low-index crystallographic planes. In this case they are deformed. The angles between the bounding planes and the (111) surface are generally larger than 10 deg. The fine ridges are present, even on the smoothest surfaces, as shown in Fig. 1. They are along a (110) direction. The height differences could not be resolved with interferometric techniques. The basic characteristic structures of the second group are depressions and hillocks. These are bounded by three planes, two of them with larger slopes than the third one. The edges between the planes, as projected to the (111) surface, point in (211) directions. The attention which this process has attracted, especially in Europe, has led me to believe that members of the Institute would be interested in a report of the progress which has been made in the year and a half that has elapsed since my paper on the subject was read at the Colorado Meeting of this Institute. As already described in that paper (Duns., xxvi., 380), this process is a modificatioii of the open-hearth steel manufacture, whether acid or basic, collsistillg essentially in the division of the charge between two furnaces, one of which is charged about two hours earlier than the other, and tapped into the other after the charge in the latter has become fluid, the slag of the first bath being removed from it during the transfer. This description still remains true as far as it goes, but further experience has demonstrated that circumstances will very materially modify the relation of the two furnaces to each other, and the character of the work done in each of them. The function of the primary furnace has become more clearly and entirely that of doing the rough work of desiliconiziug and dephosphorizing, while that of the second or finishing-furnace has become almost entirely that of decarburizing and finighing the heat. To indicate these developments and their results is the object of this paper. In order to avoid needless repetition, I shall try to accomplish part of this object by giving a short resume&apos; of what has been published elsewhere on this subject since my former paper was read. This will at least enable those interested to study the matter for themselves from original sources. IN this paper the authors aim to chronicle the experience and salient points brought out in changing flotation reagents at a concentrator which had probably been using a minimum amount of oil at a minimum cost per ton, to a more complicated system requiring a partial chemical control. The original oils were coal tar and pine oil. The new reagents are line, xanthate and pine oil. It was found that there were no insur-mountable difficulties and eventually the cost of the new reagents per ton of ore proved to be very little more than that of the old. LIME PLANT When the question of handling lime came up there were two propositions open: (1) to handle the lime dry; (2) to handle it wet in the form of an emulsion. Granting that a dry lime feeder would function properly, delivering lime uniformly, the chief objection was the dust that would be raised when these feeders were being charged or operated, as the only possible location was on a gallery beneath which men were working. With this objection the handling of lime as an emulsion seemed to he the better scheme. The lime plant which was first installed was for experimental work on one section. This was gradually changed and developed until it was of sufficient size to accommodate 20 sections. The various changes will not be discussed and the following description deals only with the fully developed plant. Crude as it is, and perhaps somewhat expensive to operate, the lime-handling plant has been quite successful. Much has been learned which will pave the way for a better installation in the future.

The regular activities of the Institute are financed mainly by income derived from members&apos; dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the amount of these endowments totals more than $684,000. An active effort is being made to increase the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which Henry Krumb is Chairman, and of which the other members are: George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, John V. N. Dorr, Howard N. Eavenson, D. %. Jack- ling, Harvey S. Mudd, Wallace E. Pratt, Milnor Roberts, and Wilfred Sykes. This committee believes that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of evergrowing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light.

Economic law was accorded considerably more recognition by the oil industry last year than perhaps ever before. While proration was undoubtedly given added impetus in 1931, and the list of proponents of unit operation was noticeably lengthened, predominant evidence plainly shows that the functioning of economic laws dominated collective efforts to reduce the excessive above-ground supply of petroleum. Crude oil production was reduced more than 48,000,000 bbl. last year; imports from other parts of the world were substantially lower; stocks of crude were drawn upon to the extent of nearly 48,000,000 bbl.; domestic gasoline demand increased 2 per cent—and yet, prices of petroleum and its products were at the lowest levels in many years. To say that the ills of the oil industry during 1931 were due to the general depression that was felt in all other lines is tantamount to attaching an air of uncertainty to a group of commodities that have been proved to be an ever increasing necessity, even in times of depression. TO say that the potential productivity of proven oil-producing areas has been responsible for the unsatisfactory state of affairs last year, and now, is to admit failure to carry out the principles designed to control production in accordance with the limits prescribed by demand. In fact, there is no reason why a large proven potential supply of oil should not be considered a valuable asset to the industry; an assurance against future needs; a stabilizing influence in building up confidence in the ability of the industry to supply this and future generations with fuel and lubricant requirements at reasonable prices. At any rate, an assured future supply of oil should be interpreted to the public to mean that the oil industry is a legitimate, progressive industry, and not a group of prospectors madly searching for "liquid gold." There has been a great deal of romance connected with the history of the oil business—so much that the public has come to associate the word "oil" with untold riches. However, the financial statements of 1931 will furnish conclusive proof to the contrary. Too much oil, too many refineries, too many filling stations, too much capital invested; these and other "too muches" and "too manys" have perhaps been given more publicity than necessary. This article presents a simple arithmetic derivation for the relationship between sharpness of classification and circulating load, as well as world-wide industrial data which are compatible with the derived equation. It is shown that the sharpness of classification decreases with increasing circulating load. Based on the evidence available a comparison is presented between the performance of the present-day hydraulic classifiers. In a continuously operated closed circuit grinding system the tonnage and the fineness of the components may be indicated as follows: Eq. 8 expresses the relationship between sharpness of classification and circulating load in closed grinding circuits. If CL = 0, E = 100% according to the definition used. This, however, is a purely theoretical case because any apparatus to be called a classifier must produce the conventional two products. Furthermore, if CL = m, E =0%. In order to visualize the meaning of Eq. 8, the effect of factors d (fineness or percentage of under-size of classifier overflow at size x) and b (fineness or percentage of undersize of classifier sands at size x) should be studied. By the most rigid standard, factor d should be given the value of 100%. By so doing the size of classification is defined as that screen size x through which 100% of the classifier

Probably no metallurgical process in the history of the mining industry has been responsible for such increased mineral production as has flotation. It has made possible the economic treatment of low grade and complex ores which, with the old methods of gravity concentration, would have been classed as worthless. Starting with the sulfide ores of copper, lead, and zinc, the process has been applied to almost all metallic and nonmetallic minerals. Today, the sulfides of the common metals not only can be readily recovered, but can be separated from each other. Thus, three or four mineral recoveries from the same ore, such as galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite, are possible. Molybdenite is recovered initially with copper sulfides and the two are subsequently separated. Flotation of metallic gold and of native copper and graphite is being commercially practiced. The carbonates of some of the base metals, principally those of lead, can also be concentrated. Flotation of the oxides, silicates, phosphates, and other so-called non- metallic minerals represents the greatest advance in the art in the last few years. Today, commercial plants are successfully treating such minerals as feldspar, garnet, ilmenite, muscovite, cassiterite, cement rock, fluorspar, phosphate rock, sylvite, and a host of others. Flotation of the various types of iron ores along with other concentration methods is today the subject of a tremendous amount of investigation on the iron ranges. EARLY PATENT HISTORY OF FROTH FLOTATION Although what we call the froth flotation process as distinguished from bulk oil processes was not used commercially until 1905, many investigators had recognized its possibilities long before the twentieth century. The principal patents issued throughout the years give us a method of recording early flotation history. BULK OIL PROCESSES: In 1860, William Haynes patented (British Patent 488) a process for separating oil-wetted sulfide minerals from water-wetted gangue minerals by agitating the dry ground ore with oil and then the mixture with water. In 1877, the Bessel brothers patented (German Patent 42, Class 22) a process where a mixture of graphite ore was mixed with 1 to 10% oil; after adding water, the

WE vote this month without knowledge of either major presidential candidates&apos; position on mineral problems. Too long have we kept our own counsel, turned our backs on the public. Certainly we must formulate policies upon which we may unite in industry council, but implementation of these by legislative bodies requires popular understanding, if not support. The earth and its resources are the province of the miner and the farmer but beyond this, and the basic need of the economy for both, the similarity ends. In this election year the disparity between the poll strength of these two fundamental callings is apparent. While both candidates have found it essential to incorporate a farm plank in their platforms, mining has been neglected as not being a basic issue. If this gives the mining fraternity the advantage of voting objectively, it also leaves the general public in the dark as to the attitude of the candidate on a basic issue. It is an issue on which depends the future of the nation, but, unfortunately, the public is not aware of its own vital stake in mining. Thus election time brings with it a fresh example of the evils of automatic lawn sprinkling-a long standing peeve of ours. Back in the days of the hand-held sprinkling hose in the intimacy of the twilight the mining man had the opportunity to unburden himself on the problems of mining to his neighbor who might be a doctor, lawyer, or accountant. With the encroachment of mechanized sprinkling, yet another forum for the indoctrination of the layman into the significance of mining has disappeared. Familiarizing your neighbors with mining in the lawn sprinkling societies of yesteryear was the individual&apos;s contribution to public relations for mining. The corporations can use educational advertising in popular magazines as is practiced by such companies as Kennecott. The AIME can play an important part by providing career guidance information on the mineral industries. We offer the suggestion to the American Min¬ing Congress, that the splendid exhibitions of mining machinery featured in alternate years for metal and coal mining, respectively, might be opened to the general public one night during the week of the show. Newspaper publicity would add greatly to the public&apos;s interest in such an opportunity. Power for the public is considered a vote-getter and no candidate has neglected to make his stand on this subject. Is the price of the kilowatt in the home of greater importance to the voter than the price of the metal durable goods which he purchases every year? Not really, but the voter thinks so. Mining has as much sales appeal as &apos;potatoes or kilowatts if presented in the proper way. We suggest that a little hand lawn sprinkling by the right people in the right places would produce an abundance of publicity which would give Mr. and Mrs. American something new to expect from their representatives-a vigilance over the flowering of their mining industry.

Introduction. WALTER RENTON INGALLS recently gave a very interesting talk before the student mining society of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In it he showed the present status of mining as he sees it. In the talk he explained that, while discoveries of great mining districts are still possible, they are being made less and less often; that the great mining companies, although there are large numbers of mines offered for sale, are finding it less and less possible to find new mines that are up to the standard of richness that they wish for purchase. The natural conclusion is that better, cheaper, and more efficient methods of mining, concentrating, and smelting are needed if the lower-grade mines are to be worked at a profit. This is true also if the high-grade mines are to yield their greatest profit. This paper deals only with the concentrating or ore-dressing problem, and gives some thoughts which point towards greater profit. In a paper on The Development of Hindered-Settling Apparatus the writer showed that there were two main lines of work that would lead to greater saving, lower tailing assay, and, therefore, greater profit. The first is the recrushing of middling or tailing products for the saving of the contained values. This is well understood and largely carried out in existing mills. The second is the saving of fine free mineral at the first opportunity. This is a matter less well understood in the mills, and to dwell upon this the present paper is written.

The copper-mining district of Jerome, Ariz., is of such economic importance that the following brief notes may be of interest. The ore deposits are said by Ransome1 to be pre-Cambrian, and are contained in the pre-Cambrian schists of the region. In the vicinity of the mine (the United Verde) the schist stands nearly vertical and strikes a little west of north. At least three varieties are distinguishable—(1) a green rock, schistose on its margins but grading into massive material, which is evidently an altered dioritic intrusive; (2) a rough gray schist with abundant pheno-crysts of quartz, apparently an altered rhyolite; and (3) a satiny, greenish gray, very fissile sericitic schist that may be a metamorphosed sediment. The ore occurs in varieties (2) and (3), the main belt of dioritic rock (1) lying just west of the orebodies. The ore is said to follow as a rule the layers of fine sericitic schist. T. A. Rickard2 Says that the ore at the United Verde Extension mine is found at the contact of diorite and schist, that both diorite and ore are earlier than the regional metamorphism, and that the quartz porphyry ("rhyolite" of Ransome) is of post-Cambrian age. The material considered here, a part of which was gathered by the writer, came from four of the mines of the district, and its study was undertaken at the suggestion of Dr. Berkey of Columbia University. The field relations and exact locations of the different specimens are not known, but a microscopic study of the thin sections gave some evidence as to the origin of the ore, which will be discussed below. The indications are that both ore and porphyry were introduced at the closing stages of the metamorphism, this being in accord with Ransome&apos;s view of the genetic relation of porphyry and ore rather than with the opinion that the ore is related to the diorite. Certain field occurrences mentioned in the literature also support this theory. Rickard, in the same article to which reference has been made, speaks of a vein of chalcocite several inches wide at the contact of one of the porphyry dikes, and Provot,3 although he regards the porphyry as subsequent to the ore, says: "Acid dikes encountered underground should be followed as they have been found in practice to lead to orebodies."

For a number of years I have, at odd times, tried to perfect a method of assay sufficiently delicate to find and estimate minute quantities of gold and silver. The object in view was to examine rocks remote from veins or mineral areas, in order to test the probability of the lateral-secretion theory. Having succeeded in measuring approximately the amount of gold and silver contained in one cubic centimeter of sea-water, I present a detailed account of the method employed, with some of the results obtained. General Method of Assay. The use of purified lead without other flux, blowpipe methods, extraction by cyanide, and measurement of the beads by the microscope. Purged Lead. The method of testing is by cupellation. On a properly prepared cupel, it is easy to cupel and find a bead of 0.002 mm. diameter. Such a bead of silver weighs about 1 part of a milligramme. A bead 0.02 mm. in diameter weighs about 1/24,000 mg., and a close approximation can be made to its weight. The 27th Regiment of Engineers was organized in the Army not long ago for special mining service at the front (or, we might even say, in advance of the front). In military engineering in warfare, the "sappers and miners" are one of the ancient branches of the corps of engineers; but in modern warfare the importance of this service has been greatly magnified. The 27th Engineers is a. special mining regiment, which is being recruited from mining engineers and miners from all districts of the country, already containing representatives from all the mining states between Arizona and Montana and from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast. Those of us who cannot go to the front should not-be content to tell the young fellows to go, and then forget them. We want the men of the 27th Engineers to know that they represent our industry and their industry; and that the industry is going to think about them and back them up. Expressing the above views, the Engineering and. Mining Journal instituted a fund for the aid of the 27th Engineers. It has already raised a considerable sum of money, and contributions are coming in fast; but there is no limit to what is wanted. This money is being spent in providing the regiment with athletic equipment, both outdoor and indoor; with games for the barracks; with cigarettes and smoking tobacco; with contributions to the funds of the several companies that the men raise among themselves. It is contemplated, moreover, that there will be need to extend aid and comfort to some of the families whom the men have left behind. Contributions of books, sweaters and other knitted articles are also being received.

The casting alloy 88 copper, 10 tin, 2 zinc, commonly known in England as Admiralty metal and in this country as Government bronze, gun metal, or Naval Department composition G, has, at its best, many valuable properties. However, its physical properties are known to vary widely with slight changes in method of manufacture of the castings, such as slight variations in composition, variation in pouring temperature, kind of mold used, method of pouring and gating of molds, size and shape of castings, amount and kind of heat treatment, and so forth.&apos; The microstructure of castings made from this alloy is influenced by slight variations of composition, rate of cooling, and kind and length of heat treatment. This is best understood by reference to the equilibrium diagram. The part of the diagram in which we are interested and the effect of the thermal equilibrium relations on the physical properties of the alloy 88 copper, 10 tin, 2 zinc, have been discussed by Hoyt, Campbell, Primrose, and Rawdon.2 In Fig. 1 is given the equilibrium diagram of the copper-tin alloys. Briefly stated, the relations of composition and temperature changes are as follows. Compositions between A and a consist of but one constit ent—the a bronze, which is a solid solution of copper and tin, rich in copper. On cooling from the molten state these compositions gradually crystallize, at temperatures above 790°, into a mass of interwoven treelike crystals or dendrites. The cores of the dendrites are rich in copper and the percentage of tin gradually increases as the surfaces are approached. AS cooling progresses, after a11 the metal has crystallized, no further changes occur in the crystals other than diffusion within the crystals, which tends to erase the dendritic pattern and to render the structure more homogeneous. * Metallurgical Ceramist, U. Relaxation calculations were made to find the temperature distribution in the refractory wall surrounding a tuyere pipe. One set of boundary conditions approxiwated those of a standard copper converter while a second set represented a hypothetical,thermally insulated tuyere pipe. The pvonounced cooling effect of the tuyere is related to the problem of tuyere accretions and tuyere bunching. PARTICULARLY severe service conditions are encountered in the tuyere zone of a basic copper converter during the matte blow. High-temperature gradients result from the juxtaposition of the hot charge and the tuyere pipe carrying cold air. Refractory temperatures near the tuyere mouth vary rapidly with time when the blast is turned on or off. One of the most serious problems is the formation of magnetite accretions around the tuyere mouth, which occurs very rapidly under some operating conditions. As a result, continual punching of the tuyeres is necessary to maintain a satisfactory rate of converting. Thus, if some means could be devised for keeping the tuyere pipes fully open without necessity for punching, a considerable saving should result from reduction in labor cost, maintenance of full capacity operation, and reduction in refractory costs. Recent quantitative studies of the FeO-Fe,O,-SiO, system1 have shown that the solubility of magnetite in iron-silicate slags decreases rapidly with de- creasing temperature in the range of copper converting temperatures. Data taken from the previous work are shown in Fig. 1. Thus the formation of "horns" and accretions around the tuyere mouth can result simply from the freezing out of magnetite on the cooler areas of refractory immediately adjacent to the tuyere pipes. One might expect to find a correlation between the severity of magnetite formation and the area of refractory surface which is cooled below the freezing point of the slag (corresponding to magnetite precipitation). Magnetite itself has a very high melting point (1597°C) so that the accretions are for all practical purposes infusible. The accretions might be dissolved by increasing the silica content of the slag and at the same time raising the temperature, but this approach is not feasible because it results in rapid corrosion of the basic refractory lining of the converter as a whole. In order to understand better the problems involved in tuyere design and operation, it seems essential to have at least a semiquantitative idea of the thermal conditions in the tuyere zone. Accordingly, this paper presents results of thermal calculations for an idealized copper converter tuyere. These calculations follow the so-called relaxation

Carlisle: This is August 1960 and I am sitting across the table from Henry DeWitt Smith. We both took the mining course at Yale the same year; and here we are, over fifty years later, at Nantucket Island where we have spent quite a number of summers together. Now, let&apos;s start the questions with something about the center of your career. Let&apos;s say Tsumeb; not about the mine itself which people know, but some of the details on how you happened to take it over for Newmont. Mr. Smith: I first heard of Tsumeb, a famous German mine, through our own associates O&apos;okiep Copper Co. From 1935 on, the local management at O&apos;okiep, being reasonably close, kept the New York office informed. It served as a listening post for new mine development, as well as being a highly profitable copper mine in the northwest Cape Colony. We had all known of a famous German mine in South West Africa called Tsumeb. But it had a reputation for not welcoming visiting engineers. One engineer who went to this property for the Ministry of Supply in 1943, &apos;44 and &apos;45 was Arthur Storke. He was much impressed with possibilities of profitable operation. This mine had been operated by a German company since 1910. It was finally taken over by the Custodian of Enemy Property for the Union of South Africa.
