A PROCESS that has come to be known locally as "multistage stabiliza-tion" has been developed in the Haft Kel field of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. in southwest Iran, for the recovery of casinghead gasoline. It con-sists in releasing the dissolved gases from the crude by stages, a practice common in many fields, but which, so far as is known, has nowhere been carried to the extent to which it is employed in Iran. It has been in use there for nearly nine years, during which time some 200 million barrels of crude have been handled by the process. This process of gasoline retention consists in preventing the greater part of the casinghead gasoline hydrocarbons (the butanes and pentanes) from ever leaving the crude, instead of allowing them to be vaporized and then recovered from the lighter gases by the usual compression or absorption processes. Its efficiency is fully equal to that obtained by the absorption process; its disadvantage is that it increases the quantities of ethane and propane in the crude sent to the refinery, but with the growing demand for propane this drawback is vanishing. When casinghead gasoline is recovered as a separate liquid in the Iranian fields, it is blended with the crude, as the only outlet is through the refinery, and the crude-oil pipe line offers the cheapest means of transportation. It is under these conditions that the retention of the butanes and pentanes in the crude by multistage stabilization is a most attractive process, possessing as it does the following advantages: (1) extreme simplicity, (2) low first cost, (3) easy installation, (4) practically 100 per cent operating-time efficiency, (5) no operators required, (6) no water or other services required, (7) negligible maintenance, (8) once established, very little routine testing is necessary. The one essential for reasonably efficient multistage stabilization is that the flowing pressures of the wells should be relatively high; i.e., they should not be less than about one-third the saturation pressure of the crude in the reservoir. This is a very general statement, of course, and much depends on the type of crude and its temperature.

Binary Cr-A1 alloys containing from 2.5 to 30 wt pct Al and 0.7 wt pct Y were heated in oxygen, air, and nitrogen between 1000" and 1200°C. The reacLivity of the alloys was found to be dependent both on the alloy composition nnd the nature of t he atmosphere. In oxygen, nllojs containing up to 15 to 20 wt pct A1 reacted to produce an external scale of Crz03 and a subscale consisting Predominently of Al203. Alloys contazning 20 to 30 wt pct A1 react in oxygen to produce an A1203 external scale and little m no subscale. The latter alloys were markedly more oxidation resistant than those of low alurninum content. In air, the alloys on which an external Crz03 scale was formed were found to be permeable to nitrogen ns evidenced by the copious amomts of chromium and aluminum nilrides observed ns part of the subscale. The reactizities in nir (or nitrogen) of these alloys increase <m their aluminurn contents increase. However, alloys on which Al,O, us an external scale is formed were nol culnerable to nccelerated attack in air, and no eltldence of nitvide subscnles were observed. For all alloys, yttrium serwed pYimarily to improve oxide adhrence. THE role of chromium in the oxidation resistance of Fe-Cr alloys &apos;-&apos; and that of aluminum in Fe-Cr-A1 al10s&apos; has received considerable attention in recent years. This is understandable since many of these alloys have excellent oxidation resistance due to the formation of either a Cr203 or a-Ala03 film between the metal and the oxidizing atmosphere. Small additions of yttrium or other rare earth metals are effective in preventing spalling of the protective oxide from the metal substrate."" In contrast, little is known regarding the oxidation resistance of Cr-A1 alloys, although some work has been done by Tumarov et a1.&apos; The poor niechanical properties exhibited by Cr-A1 alloys make them undesirable for use as structural components, but their use as coatings cannot be disregarded. The use of chromium-rich aluminide coatings for refractory metal alloys is an example of the potential use of this type of sytem. The purpose of this work is to examine the oxidation behavior of Cr-A1 alloys containing 2.5 to 30 wt pct A1 and 0.7 wt pct Y. The effects of temperature, atmosphere, and thermal cycling have been determined. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation can be divided into two groups. Those containing 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt pct A1 and 0.7 wt pct Y were extensively evaluated in the temperature range from 1000" to 1200°C. Alloys containing 15, 20, 25, and 30 wt pct A1 and 0.7 wt pct Y were tested only at 1200°C. All of the alloys were prepared by standard arc-melting techniques in the form of cylinders approximately 4 in. long and 19 in. in diam. Wafers were cut from the cylinders and subsequently subdivided into rectangular coupons. The alloys were brittle and therefore some cracks were found in almost all specimens. The coupons were prepared for oxidation by mechanically polishing through 600 grit Sic paper, and were thoroughly degreased just prior to testing. Two types of oxidation experiments were conducted, namely; cyclic tests in which the specimens were examined and weighed after each 2 hr exposure, and continuous thermal balance tests run in a controlled atmosphere (oxygen, air, or nitrogen) for 20 hr. In the former test the spalled oxide was not included when the specimens were weighed. The physical condition of a specimen was noted visually after each cycle and testing was continued either to failure or until the performance of the specimen was well characterized. Both Micro and Semi-Micro Thermal Balances (Ains-worth) were used in the continuous tests. The oxidized specimens were sectioned and prepared for metal log raphic examination. The specimens were polished through 600 grit Sic paper. After polishing through 6 and l p diamond, a final mechanical polish with Linde B-Alz03 was used. Specimens containing 2.5 pct A1 were etched electrolytically using a 10 pct oxalic acid solution at 4 v for about 2 sec. Selected specimens were examined in the electron microprobe analyzer. Oxide specimens were examined by standard X-ray diffraction techniques. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS For convenience, the test results have been broken down according to the exposure temperature, and further subdivided according to the type of test and atmosphere employed. Because of the poor quality of the specimens a larger than normal amount of scatter was observed in the measured rate constants. Also, the evaluation of the weight gain data was done on a somewhat arbitrary basis and may not be truly representative. However, the results obtained do show a significant trend in behavior regarding both alloy composition and the nature of the oxidizing atmosphere. I) Oxidation Behavior at 1000°C. A) Continuous Oxidation estsin Oxygen. This series of experiments was run in the Ainsworth Micro-Thermal Balance using pure oxygen at a pressure of 76 mm Hg. Under these conditions all specimens oxidized in accordance with the parabolic rate law over a major portion of the exposure time; the rate constants appear in Table I. The oxide formed externally on all specimens was predominantly Cr,O,, which was generally adherent. In some cases a slight amount of spalling in the form of a fine powder was noted. a-A1203 was observed as a subscale, along with Yz03 in all alloys. Alloys containing up to 7.5 wt pct A1 oxidize more rapidly than the Cr-0.7Y alloy.

A method is presented for obtaining porosities of consolidated formations from the drill returns. The method provides a means of determining the bulk volume of a large number of particles, such as drill cuttings, by employing a capillary diaphragm for removal of surplus surface liquid from saturated cuttings having pores of capillary size, which reduces tile amount of error present in former attempts to determine the porosity of drill cuttings. The method makes it possible to obtain a considerable amount of supplementary data on consolidated formations. Introduction Porosity is a direct measure Of the volume of the voids in a formation. It may be used for estimating the permeability of a formation provided that a correlation of these two properties has been obtained from the analysis of cores from the particular formation, and it forms a desirable aid in interpreting electric logs.1 These useful applications have emphasized the importance of developing a method for determining the porosity of the formations penetrated by a well by some means other than coring, for even in exploration wells it is neither economical nor practical to core all formations. Also, in wells where at the outset the coring program appears comprehensive, it is frequently found that, after certain layers are drilled. more complete information is required for evaluation. Porosity values, if obtainable, would be of great assistance in such cases. In soft formations it is usually possible to obtain porosities after drilling with cores taken by side-wall coring devices. In hard consolidated formations, that coring procedure is not alway practicable and other methods for determining porosities must be resorted to. A first choice is the examination of drill cuttings. if an analytical procedure is available that is both accurate and reasonably rapid. Such a procedure has been devised and is applicable to sand and limestone cuttings having pores of capillary size. Although imp,ovements can yet be made, it is believed that the new technique is sufficiently well developed to warrant description, Preparation of Sample The well samples containing the cuttings representative of the particular intervals are first washed through a No&apos; 6 gauge screen. The cuttings remaining on the Screen are large enough to use lor the porosity measurements&apos; From the sized sample, the cuttings to be examined are separated from the shale and Other extraneous particles. It is recommended that 10 to 15 c.c. of the selected cuttings be used for measurements, although only 4 to 5 c c. were used to make the comparative tests described later in this article. These cuttings are extracted and dried by the same methods used for preparing core samples for porosity and other measurements. OF the western European countries, only England has made any extensive use of equipment developed initially by the coal preparation industry of the United States. About 20 years ago, the Chance sand flotation process for cleaning coal was introduced in England, and it has had a fairly wide adoption, particularly in the South Wales coal fields. In recent years, particularly since 1946, a considerable number of Denver flotation cells have been installed throughout the English coal fields for the cleaning of slurry. Until the advent of the Denver cells, the flotation of coal slurries in Western Europe had been done largely with the Mineral Separations cell or its modifications. Kleinbentik of Dutch State Mines had developed a cylindrical cell used in Holland and occasionally in Belgium and France. In England, the establishment of the National Coal Board to control the planning and operation of all coal production has retarded somewhat modernization of properties. A considerable period of study was required before definite long-range plans could be formulated. It was soon recognized that stopgap measures were needed in many cases to bridge the period until final plans could be developed and consummated. One of the stopgap problems in coal preparation was providing plants of small and medium capacity that could be used for a few years at one site and yet could be moved economically to another site so as to reduce depreciation charges per year and per ton. Such plants are being installed but the most satisfactory answer probably has not yet been found. One such installation uses a Norton Baum jig to wash 6 in. to 0. The equipment is in a steel structure rather than in a reinforced concrete frame with brick curtain walls, which is the normal structure for permanent plants. Since England has between 700 and 800 preparation plants for an output of 200 million tons per year, one of the long-range objectives is a consolidation of mine output which will require fewer coal

INTRODUCTION Theodore Roosevelt Dam is a cyclopean-masonry, gravity-arch dam located on the Salt River northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. Construction of the dam began in 1903 and was completed in 1911. The dam is about 85 m high with a total reservoir capacity of about 1.7x109 m3. Raising the dam is now being considered to provide additional water storage and flood control. This paper describes preliminary analyses performed to assess foundation stability for increased loading resulting from raising the dam and reservoir water surface about 12 m. The foundation of Theodore Roosevelt Dam consists of variably metamorphosed limes tones, sands tones, mudstones, and shales. Bedding uniformly strikes nearly normal to the river (N 40º W) and dips upstream at 25 to 30º. The rock is cut by four prominent joint sets as indicated by the joint contour diagram shown in figure 1A. The diagram was developed from surf ace observations and vertical drill core oriented relative to the bedding. Sampling biases account for the differences in concentrations of various joint sets. However, field observations indicate that all sets are relatively prominent, planar, and continuous. SEEPAGE ANALYSES Consistent with practice at the time of construction, no foundation drainage was installed at Theodore Roosevelt Dam. Finite element seepage analyses were therefore performed to study the potential for large uplift pressures in the foundation. The dam has steep abutments and is curved in plan as shown in figure 1B. The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M., except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its, Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly anti in more usable shape.

At the close of the current academic year, there will be eight vacancies to be filled in research graduate assistantships which are maintained by the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois. In addition to these assistantships, there are available two research graduate assistantships in gas engineering, which are supported by the Illinois Gas Association. These assistantships, for each, of which there is an annual stipend of $500 and freedom from all fees except the matriculation and diploma fees, are open to graduates of approved American and foreign universities and technical schools who are prepared to undertake graduate study in engineering, physics, or applied chemistry. An appointment to the position of Research Graduate Assistant is made and must be accepted for two consecutive collegiate years, at the expiration of which period, if all requirements have been met, the degree of Master of Science will be conferred. Not more than. half of the time of a Research Graduate Assistant is required in connection with the work of the department to which he is assigned, the remainder being available for graduate study.

In 1891-92 1 was entrusted with the geological survey of part of the large area lying between the Marquette and Menominee iron-ranges in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and extending from the Republic trough on the north, through portions of the valleys of the Michigamme and Fence rivers, to and including the intermediate Felch mountain range on the south. Until a few years back the larger part of this area has been very difficult of access, and much of it is difficult still. The rock-surface is for the most part covered with swamp, forest and glacial deposits of various kinds, and therefore has not invited geological study. For these reasons the district, as a whole, with the exception of the Felch mountain range, remained almost unknown from a geological standpoint until our work in 1892. Our main object was to map the pre-Cambrian rocks, particularly the iron-bearing formations of Algonkian or Huronian age, and to obtain as much information as possible with reference to their sequence and structure, In carrying out this purpose, the use of simple magnetic instruments was found to be of the greatest assistance, and indeed indispensable. In this paper the results of our experience in tracing magnetic rocks by means of the disturbances produced in these instruments, have been brought together in systematic form, with such references to the particular area as are necessary in order to illustrate general principles, with the hope that they will prove useful to other workers in the same region, or in other regions where similar conditions may be encountered. The writer was efficiently aided in the field-work by Messrs. Samuel Sanford and Charlea N. Fairchild for nearly the whole period, and E. B. Mathews and H. F. Phillips for part of it,

Roof control comprises about 35% of direct and indirect underground mining costs. In addition, difficulties in estimating roof control costs for new areas lead to the greatest uncertainties when negotiating coal contracts. And obviously, coal cannot be mined if the roof can&apos;t be held. Accordingly, there are strong incentives to attack this problem on as many fronts as possible. One successful geological modeling technique for predicting future roof conditions was recently applied at Peabody Coal&apos;s Simco mine No. 5, located in Coshocton, Ohio. Benefits derived from it included: - A better identification of areas where poor safety conditions may be encountered. - Improved roof control cost estimates for contract negotiations. - Estimates of time-duration while mining in bad roof areas. - Labor and materials cost predictions in an existing mine. - Productivity increases through prior knowledge of areas to avoid.

In future years, decision makers in the coal industry will make more and more decisions based on information from computer-based models. Whilst the use of such techniques will provide many advantages for coal companies, particularly in terms of efficient utilisation of their human resources, it is equally important for the decision makers to have an awareness of the limitations inherent in each particular computer-based model being used to provide information for the decision making process. A recommended procedure for identifying such limitations - by analysing the 3 major elements of the model - is presented. The human aspects of increased use of computer-based techniques are emphasised throughout the paper.

For the past fifty years or more, the structural features of the Cordil-leran mountain system of western United States have presented some most interesting problems. Any geologist or engineer living in this region, or even making occasional examinations of the mines, will lose much of interest and importance if he is not familiar with the literature. Some of the greatest works on geology have been the result of studies carried on in sections of this region. Among the more important of the earlier works are those of Dutton,l King,2 Gilbert3 and Powell;4 of the more recent Lindgren,5 Ransome,6 Spurr,7 Butler8 and others have contributed much. Many of the papers are largely of scientific interest but even these lay the foundation for the commercial application of the broader features of the geology. I have read many of these works with the keenest interest and pleasure; in fact, some have been read until some of the more important findings seem to be my own. In this paper, however, it is my aim to accept credit for little more than the labor of assembling some of the ideas of others. This is done with the hope that an interesting and valuable discussion will be the result. If some of the ideas presented should

The concept of metal zoning has long been recognized (Spurr, 1907, 1923; Emmons, 1924, 1926; Lindgren, 1933; Rateman, 1950), although it has been considered indistinct for most epithermal districts. The geometric relation of barren zones of hydrother-mally altered rock to ore deposits was emphasized in the work of Lovering (1941, 1949, 1950), Sales and Meyer (1948, 1949, 19501, Burbank (1941, 1950), Schwartz (1939, 1950), and Kerr (1947). Lovering (op. cit.) and Sales and Meyer (op. cit.) emphasized the consistent presence of barren alteration envelopes enclosing individual ore bodies, particularly of the vein type. Schwartz (1950) noted a difference between the distribution of alteration zones described by Lovering and by Sales and Meyer, as compared with those associated with the porphyry copper deposits of the Southwest. The disseminated deposits of the Southwest usually occur within large bodies of altered rock whereas most veins do not. In the following discussion the mineralization process is conceived of consisting of two distinct phases: pre-ore nonmetallic alteration and metallization. In the present investigation the position, size, and shape of all known hydro thermally altered areas and the position, size, and metal type of all known ore deposits were plotted on base maps of southwestern and west-central Colorado (Figure 1). The maps indicate a generally consistent geometric relation between altered and metallized areas. The addition of alteration to the pattern of metal deposits establishes a temperature zoning pattern of much greater clarity than that formed by the epithermal metal deposits alone, and allows a more precise definition of mineral belts. The center of strongest mineralization is indicated to be the area of greatest barren alteration, and metal deposits are grouped about it both under structural control and crudely in response to temperature zoning. The combination of an area of strong alteration and associated marginal clusters of metal deposits is defined as a mineral district. The strong similarity in individual deposits, in groups of different types of deposits, and in the alteration-metallization relation in districts throughout the region implies that a single metallogenic province is represented in southwestern and west-central Colorado. The occurrence of deposits in Tertiary voi-canics indicates a late Tertiary metallogenic epoci., although an early Tertiary epoch is known locally as at Ouray. Discussion of the paper of L. O. HOWARD, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 91, July, 1914, pp. 1785 to 1790. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-I would like to add a few words of praise on Mr. Howard&apos;s work at the Old Dominion. Mr. Howard has given this particular converter shell his personal attention, and the results are shown in the figures given. Similar converter shells, a little different in shape and of about the same size, have been tried in many plants throughout the United States. The results have been highly satisfactory, but there is no shell of the size of the one described by Mr. Howard that has given anything like the results that Mr. Howard&apos;s shell has given. I know of larger shells that have given very good service, and are still in operation, and require very little repair. The main thing about the whole process of using the basic lining in copper converting is to keep the temperature within reasonable bounds, particularly not to get the furnace too hot. If it is overheated a little bit, for say half an hour, an entire lining may be ruined. It is very easy to keep the temperature regulated &apos;if the mass is large. If you have a large mass in your converter you can easily prevent it from getting over-heated, and that is the big argument in favor of the extra large converters. Of course, there is a limit to what a plant can turn out in the way of matte. Very few plants can supply matte sufficient to keep a converter of 20 ft. in diameter in operation constantly, but the 20-ft. converter is very much superior to the 12-ft. converter in easy handling and absolute control of the temperature. I think Mr. Howard is to be congratulated on the excellent showing he has made.

THE amount or value of the precious metals consumed in dentistry is probably amazing to most people. It falls very little short of that which is consumed in jewelry. Inasmuch as the ultimate destination is in the human mouth, dental alloys enjoy some importance because life and health depend upon restorations made with them. Prosthetic dentistry has made wonderful progress in the last few years. The manufacturers who supply the metals also deserve commendation. This industry which deals with metals to go into people&apos;s mouths is comparatively new. There is no literature on the subject, and little or no precedent by which to be guided. It was only by close cooperation with the dentist or prosthetic technician that desirable physical properties were produced, as nearly as possible, in the metals which were available and permissible. It is true that there were and still are conflicting opinions among the dentists as to the physical properties they require. Sometimes they request the impossible, such as alloys which are exceedingly stiff and springy, yet will bend or adjust easily. Even in this latter instance, progress has been made by supplying methods of heat-treatment whereby metals may be softened or hardened at will. (Figs. 1 and 2.) The demands made upon manufacturers are extremely varied. They must supply metals of tensile strengths ranging from approximately 30,000 to 100,000 lb. per sq. in. and over. The latter metals must be workable and in many instances capable of extreme deformation. They must not be affected by mouth conditions, nor should they oxidize greatly when molten, at red heat, or during a soldering operation. In addition to physical specifications, color demands must also be met. The firm of which I have the most knowledge manufacturers 11,553 standard stock articles of precious metals, taking into consideration formulas, finenesses, grades, colors, gages, lengths, sizes and weights. If special demands are taken into consideration, the number would be in excess of 25,000. Wrought metals are manufactured in a great many alloys of different sizes and shapes, such as plate, bar, rod, wire, sheet, strip, mesh and foil. There are also other products of importance.

An investigation was made of ground response to pillar retreat mining in a 1.7 meter thick seam at 108 meter depth at a site in northern West Virginia. This paper describes mining-related stress changes and movements at mine level, displacements within the overburden, ground surface subsidence and groundwater level variations. Subsidence approached 40 per cent of the mine height and continued more than a year after mining. Water levels declined in certain deep-lying strata.

The Menominee range is one of the four great mining belts that flank the western prongs of Lake Superior. It has received its name from its location along the north side of the Menominee river, which at this place flows between the States of Michigan and Wisconsin. The term "range" is derived from the elevated ridge, extending in a westward direction, and along the southern flank of which the iron-ore mines are located. This range is some 200 to 300 feet high above the general level of the adjacent country, and is made prominent by its surroundings of low, swampy lands. Its whole length is about 27 miles, and it is intersected, at intervals along its course, by gaps which are threaded by streams. The geology of the Menominee range is peculiarly interesting. It is composed of three distinct groups of Hurouian rocks. The supporting group consists of light-colored limestone beds of a crystalline, siliceous character, called the "Norway limestone belt." The map, Fig. 1, and the section, Fig. 2, will give a general notion of the position and structure of the range. The properties shaded in the map are those of the Penn Iron Mining Company, which is the Michigan representative of the Cambria Iron Company of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. This belt is at least 1200 feet thick. It outcrops boldly at many localities along the range, especially north of the Norway, Quinnesec and Chapin mines. At Quinnesec it can be studied readily. The next, or Banking group, which is estimated at a thickness of 1000 feet, is called the Quinnesec ore-formation. It consists, in the portion next to the limestone, of siliceons or jasper slates, largely impregnated with iron oxide. These are succeeded by argillaceous hydro-mica black and flesh-colored slates. This formation embraces the deposits of the iron-ores. The third group consists of a series of dark gray, slaty or schistose beds, with occasional quartzose bands, having a thickness of 2000 feet. It is called the Lake Hanbury slate group.
