The Aldrich Mining Go. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the east half of Township 12, Range 12 W., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of' the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be canceled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset—namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses. The group of claims, comprising over 1,100 acres, located at Maitland (formerly known as Garden City), in the Ida Gray mining district, Lawrence county, South Dakota, are now being developed and operated by Alexander Maitland, the owner. Prior to the acquisition of this property two years ago by Mr. Maitland, but little work had been done in this district, and little was known of the extent of the ore-deposits. Recent development, however, has opened up some very promising ore-shoots. The ores so far encountered are the so-called " Potsdam siliceous ores," occurring in the flat formation lying immediately above the Cambrian quartzite, which dips at this locality about 12º. Both oxidized and blue ores are found, and the latter have proven particularly refractory to treat. No prospecting in the underlying slates of the Archean period has so far been attempted; but this work is one of the future considerations in the development of the property. Small quantities of blue ores are unavoidably sent to the mill, but special care is taken to send only the oxidized ores for the cyanide treatment. The ores, being close-grained and hard, have given considerable trouble in their treatment. Pyrrhotite arid pyrite exist in about equal proportions; arsenic, copper, and traces of antimony and tellurium are encountered, and considerable quantities of bismuth have been found in the zinc-box precipitates. The silver in the low-grade ores is slightly greater than the gold, while in the high-grade ores the reverse is generally true. THE study and use of low-carbon manganese steels have been curiously neglected in the general history of developments in alloy steels. Hadfield1 made an extensive study of manganese-iron-carbon alloys about 1886, which culminated in the wide application and use of Hadfield austenitic manganese steel. His alloys were nearly all high in carbon, as compared with the steels discussed in this paper, and he found a marked tendency towards brittleness in the alloys of medium and low manganese content, that is, below 7 per cent. manganese. As a result, there has been a widespread prejudice against the use of manganese steels containing between 1.0 to 3.5 per cent. manganese with comparatively low carbon. Steels of this composition have never been studied adequately in comparison with other alloy steels, and have had little use in practice. In a very recent paper by Sir Robert Hadfield2 the following statement appears: ?. . . manganese-iron alloys with little or no carbon do not seem to offer any practical employment; they only become valuable in the presence of quite high percentages of carbon, 0.90 to 1.50 per cent." The results of the present investigation are so contrary to the findings of Hadfield that the writers feel fully justified in presenting the preliminary report incorporated in this paper.

The steel industry has a definite need in its tonnage mills for a formula relating expected tensile strength to the analysis of the steel. The McWilliam-Barnes1 and other less comprehensive formulas are used for this purpose, but these formulas were designed for an analysis range that does not include the medium manganese and silicon-bearing steels. This type of steel is being produced to meet the demand for tensile strength slightly higher than that of ordinary structural steel but not high enough to justify expensive alloy steels. The purpose of this paper is to present a somewhat more comprehensive formula based on data accumulated over a number of years by the Inland Steel Co., and to discuss the method followed in obtaining a formula to fit the data. The resultant formula admittedly is still weak in some respects, but for the expanded analysis range appears to be an improvement over the other formulas. It is hoped that with the collection of more data and possible collaboration with other mills studying this problem it will be possible to work out a more nearly perfect formula. Several publications have been issued on this subject. In some, the equation type of relation was evolved while others made a combination of tables and an equation. The latter include work by Campbel12,3 and Webster.4,5 Campbell classified the steels as acid and basic and applied a different formula to each. For basic steels, he used the equation: Teosile etrength = 41500 + 770C + 1000P + yMn [1 y was a variable depending on the carbon and manganese content of the steel and was listed in tables. Webster investigated acid Bessemer steel and developed the equation: Tensile strength = 38000 + 800C + xTP+ yMn [2]

Corrosion tests should be designed so as to facilitate as far as possible the interpretation of results, consequently factors which may affect the rate of corrosion should be controlled as far as practicable, and very full data should be given regarding the conditions of the test. Among the most important factors affecting the rate of corrosion is often the rate of supply of oxygen to the metal surface. It is essential therefore to understand the mechanism by which oxygen is transferred from the liquid surface to the surface of the metal. The work of Adeney and his coworkers has thrown much light on this mechanism. They have shown1 that the aeration of deaerated water and salt solutions proceeds much more rapidly than can be accounted for by mere diffusion, and have suggested that downward "streaming" takes place from the surface of the water, due mainly to an increase of density brought about by evaporation. The evaporation reduces the temperature of the surface layer, and also increases the concentration in the case of salt solutions. The effect of evaporation in facilitating the transfer of oxygen to a metal and increasing the corrosion of the metal was shown in some experiments due to Friend.2 He tested the corrosion of mild steel plates immersed in water in glass jars, a steady stream of air being drawn over the surface of the water in the jars. The air passing through half the number of jars was saturated with moisture, that passing through the others was dried with calcium chloride. He found that "in every case the water exposed to dry air was approximately twice as corrosive as that exposed to air saturated with water vapor." THe Pocahontas district occupies the extreme southern end of West Virginia, principally McDowell, Mercer and Wyoming counties, and a part of Tazewell county, in southwestern Virginia. The first record of the coal field is a report by Prof. J. P. Lesley, of Pennsylvania, about 1880, in which he mentions a coal opening at the upper end of Abbs Valley, Tazewell county, Va. C. R. Boyd, a mining engineer of Wytheville, Va., published a series of articles in 1881, mentioning coal on Indian Creek, Tazewell county, and on Horse Pen creek, which coals, he stated, extended toward the Ohio River. He also mentions the Abbs Valley coal reported by Lesley. In 1881, F. J. Kimball (who became president of the Norfolk & Western R. R. in 1883)) after examining the Scott mine in Abbs Valley, went northward across Abbs Valley Mountain to the place now known as Pocahontas, where he located what has since been called No. 3 vein of Pocahontas coal. In November, 1882, Jed Hotchkiss and others prepared a cross-section of the Flat Top Mountain coal measures, some notes on which were published by Mr. Hotchkiss, between 1880 and 1892, under the title of " The Virginias.' In May, 1881, the Norfolk & Western R. R. was organized through the purchase of the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio R. R., an old line running from Norfolk, Va., to Bristol, Tenn., with branches from Petersburg to City Point and from Glade Springs to Saltville. At that time, charters had been granted for three railroads tributary to the New River Valley, but their proposed routes would indicate that the promoters were concerned with minerals, timber, and a connection with the Chesapeake & Ohio R. R., rather than the development of any coal in the Pocahontas district. One of them was projected to extend up Bluestone River a short distance, but not far enough to reach the coal in the Bluestone Valley, and a little grading was done for a narrow-gage road between New River Station and a point in Giles county, Virginia, near the West Virginia line. All charters and railroads in this district were acquired by the Norfolk & Western R.R.

After surveying the beneficiation techniques in the Florida phosphate field, it is apparent that optimum beneficiation of this ore is a difficult task. Due to continually changing grade, size distribution and basic nature of the ore, there appears to be no universal technique nor a single reagent entirely satisfactory for achieving optimum metallurgy under these dynamic conditions. Although no major change in the basic flow sheet has been made in the last 20 years, there have been many refinements of the process in recent years which have helped increase production, improve recovery, lower unit cost of operation and make the beneficiation of lower grade deposits economically feasible. Among the significant changes is the use of larger plants and equipment which has helped to increase production significantly. The use of cyclones has facilitated and reduced the cost of slimes removal in these large plants. There have also been several new approaches to the flotation of coarse phosphate that are mentioned in the text of this paper. Lastly, significant improvements have also taken place in the area of flotation reagents.

G. E. Agar (Manager, Minerals Processing Research, International Minerals & Chemical Corp., Skokie, III.) — The author notes a discrepancy between the parameters a and ß which are the slopes of the size distribution and energy-size modulus plots respectively. The reason for the discrepancy and the systematic decrease in the magnitude of a with grinding time is abundantly clear from the work of Fuerstenau8 on dry grinding. Fuerstenau shows very clearly in his Fig. 5 that at short retention times the parameter a is the same as that obtained by sizing over the complete size range. From this figure, it is obvious that sizing to only 400 mesh gave distribution curves similar to Mular's - that is, the slope apparently decreased systematically with increased grinding. As a consequence of the improper determination of a, the magnitude of ß given by Mular must be larger than the true value. In order to demonstrate this, the following Fig. 6 was taken from Mular's paper (his Fig. 1). Fuer-stenau's results show that we can approximate the correct value of K by drawing lines parallel to the short retention time curves through the 400-mesh

The rate of elimination of carbon largely controls the time required to make a heat of steel by the basic open-hearth process and to an important degree determines the cost of refining. Practical experience has led to the generally accepted belief that the use of slags relatively high in iron oxide, such as are required to bring about rapid refining, leads to a certain sacrifice of quality in the product. As a consequence, a compromise must be made between the exceedingly slow rate of carbon drop which would correspond to the ideal case and the rapid rate which would best satisfy the condition of minimum cost. An increase in rate of refining necessarily implies an increase in the concentration of iron oxide dissolved in the metal. However, even for the infinitely slow rate that corresponds to slag-metal equilibrium, the metal would contain a certain definite concentration of dissolved iron oxide. It is a matter of great practical importance, therefore, to determine the quantitative relation between the minimum or equilibrium concentration of iron oxide in the metal and the higher concentrations which must actually obtain in practice. The present paper is devoted to the development of certain equations, derived from the established laws of physical chemistry, which will enable this relation between rate of refining and the degree of oxidation of the metal bath to be computed from operating data. So attempt is made to exhaust the possibilities of this general method of treatment. In considering rate of refining, attention is mainly confined to rate of carbon elimination. However, the equations are of a more general nature and their application may readily be extended. The results of the preliminary calculations given herein indicate that increased rate of refining may have a decided effect in increasing the concentration of iron oxide dissolved in the metal. The uncertainty which attaches to the calculated value for this relationship arises in part from probable errors in experimental data on which the calculations are based, and in part from the lack of complete or favorably disposed information on basic open-hearth practice. When the relation between rate of refining and degree of oxidation of the metal has been more accurately established than has been done in the present paper, it will then become possible to consider what comprises

The steel industry of the United States has depended in the past almost wholly upon imports for its supplies of manganese. Many of the important domestic sources yield ores leaner in their natural condition than the foreign ores the steel industry. has been accustomed to use. To make them available, therefore, either the ores must be concentrated or the practice of the steel industry modified. Roughly 25,000 T. annually of high-grade manganese ores are used for dry batteries for chemical purpose, and in other ways; while approximately 750,000 T. are required for making steel. , By present practice, every ton of steel takes an average of about 14 lb. (1.8 kg.) of metallic manganese. This is generally added to the steel in the form of an alloy, the standard alloys being the 80-per cent. ferro-manganese and the 20-per cent. spiegeleisen, During the year 1917, 286,000 T. of ferromanganese and 193,291 T. of spiegeleisen were made in this country, the former largely from imported ores; and 45,381 T. of ferromanganese. was imported. The metallic manganese represented by these alloys was 304,000 T., the product of roughly 800,000 T. of high-grade ore and 345,000 T. of low-grade ore. Manganese Deposits in the United States Before the war manganese ore was mined in relatively small quantities in the Appalachian region, including Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia, and in Arkansas, but owing to the increase in prices during the past three years manganese mining has been undertaken also in Montana, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Minnesota. From data now available it appears that in this country deposits of high-grade manganese ores are usually small, while materials lower in manganese and higher in iron occur in appreciable quantities. In the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute for the year 1878, in the account of the proceedings of the annual meeting in March of that year, when Mr. Bell read his paper On the Separation of Phosphorus from Pig-Iron, occurs the following statement, as part of the reported discussion of that paper: " Mr. Sidney Thomas stated that he had succeeded in effecting the almost complete removal of phosphorus in the Bessemer process. Experiments had been carried on at Blaenavon, with the co-operation of Mr. Martin, on quantities varying between 6 lbs. and 10 cwt., and some hundred analyses made by Mr. Gilchrist (who had the conduct of the experiments from the first) showing the removal of from 20 per cent. to 99.9 per cent. of phosphorus in the converter. He believed the practical difficulties in the way had been overcome, and that Cleveland pig might be made into good steel without any intermediate process. He hoped on a future occasion to lay full details before the Institute." An instantaneous and continuous analysis of a mineral suspension should be of great value in controlling various mineral preparation processes. Described herein is a method of analysis based on the use of high-frequency alternating current, which, under certain restrictive conditions, could be of use. Theoretical Considerations In a suspension of conductive minerals, the electrical effect primarily responsible for the variations in electric conductivity is the capacitance. TYPES OF WET DUST COLLECTORS Basically, there are two types of wettype dust collectors. One is mechanical, incorporating pumps, motors, fans, sprays, filters, or flooded beds. These come in many forms, but their operating principle is basically the same. The screen or flooded bed is wetted by a series of sprays. Polluted air is drawn in through a fan; here the dust particles impinge on the screen and are flushed off into a settlement tank. The air then passes through spray eliminators to the atmosphere. A great deal of time and money has been spent developing this type of collector. In laboratory tests where clean water at constant pressure, air at constant volume, and dust at low but constant mass to volume were applied, these collectors gave high percentage dust collection efficiencies. Theoretically and technically, they are very good. In practice, however, under rugged mining conditions where there are no constants, and dust load, particle size, water pressure, and volume of air vary with time, their efficiency varies dramatically. Some of the most common problems are: 1. clogging of screens 2. blocking of nozzles 3. replacement. of damaged pump stators Any of the above result in loss of air flow and dust collection efficiency. Generally, there are so many mechanical moving parts, something is always breaking down. This type of collector is very expensive in parts and labor to maintain. The second type of dust collector, which I personally developed, with the help of the British National Coal Board of Great Britain, has none of the above mentioned problems and it works on a completely different principle. My collector, the Mark III Precipitaire Wet-Type Dust Collector, (an improved version of previously successful models) has no internal moving parts, no flooded beds, screens, spray nozzles, etc. It is highly efficient - 99.8% efficiency on total collected dust and 97% on respirable dust. The pressure drop through the collector is constant, hence, air flow remains constant. There is no maintenance expenditure, be it labor or parts. The only maintenance that there is, is desludging. This, of course, varies with the dust load. With a low dust load, desludqinq may only be required every 4 weeks, but this is a very simple operation that can be handled by unskilled men and it takes only a very short time. My collector is powered by a ventilation fan that is placed on the clean air side for a longer fan and motor life. Dust is extracted solely by water action. The collector's operating principle is: Dust laden air is drawn in along ducting into a tapered scrubber section, shaped to create a self-induced curtain of water. This action washes the dust particles from the air and the collected dust settles into the bottom of the tank. Cleaned air is then exhausted via a series of spray eliminators where it is completely dried and on into the atmosphere. These collectors have been sold in Great Britain, to the National Coal Board, and throughout Europe. They have been working very well for many years now. GENERAL APPLICATIONS Dust is very dangerous; silicosis and black lung kill and disable many workers each year. Many of the mine explosions can be attributed to coal dust. By the use and application of dust collectors, these deaths and disasters can be avoided. There really is no excuse. However good and efficient a dust collector may be, it's positioning and installation arrangement is critical. The collector may remove 99% of dust supplied to it, but it takes the skill and experience of a dust control engineer to design and fit ducting, hoods, etc. to remove polluted air at source and deliver it to the collector. In some cases this is very simple; in the case of longwall machines, it is very difficult. In general, dust collectors should be used to collect dust at every point of dust generation. I have noted a great reliance on dilution as a means of dust control. I personally think this is a dangerous and unreliable method. As mines become deeper and the use of larger and more productive equipment becomes more common, reliance on dilution will be impossible and dust collectors will be essential.

THE Cr,O-type, or P-tungsten, structure having the space group (Oh2— Pm,n) is one of the most widely occurring structures found among the intermediate phases involving transition metals. Including the phases reported here for the first time, the total number of these A,B phases now known is 39. Greenfield and Beck' have correlated the lattice parameters of these phases with the Goldschmidt radius of the close-packed chains of A atoms. Laves' discussed the apparent size of the A and B atoms in this structure. Gel1er" proposed a scheme for reproducing the lattice constants of the phases by the use of a list of effective C.N. 12 radii for the component elements. Reported here is a survey of the A,B combinations which appeared favorable for the stability of the Cr,O-type phase but which, at the time the investigation was begun, either had not been reported upon or had conflicting reports as to the existence of the structure. Seventy systems were investigated, and 8 Cr,,O-type structures were found. Six of these also were reported by other investigators in the interval between the start of this investigation and its completion. This survey yielded information as to the influence of the relative sizes of the A and B atoms on the stability of the phase and, for the various families of Cr,O-type phases, the effects of the sizes of the A and B atoms on the lattice constant. Likewise, a somewhat clearer picture of the connection between the position of the A and B elements in the Periodic Table and their Cr,O-type phase-forming tendencies has become apparent.
