Oleic acid is the chief ingredient of fatty acids used as collectors in nonsulfide flotation. With a few notable exceptions, the various quantities of saturated and other unsaturated acids comprising the remainder are usually unspecified. There have been occasional investigations to determine the collecting ability of these other acids and their effect on collection with oleic acid, but much remains to be done in this field. Hukki and Vartiainen, on the basis of tests using palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids and an impure linolenic acid, concluded: "The collecting power of fatty acids used in flotation increases with increasing unsaturation of the hydrocarbon chain." 1 Their work was concerned mainly with the response of ilmenite to the foregoing collectors, although tests were also made with magnetite, pyrite, hematite, and rutile. Cooke and Nummela, employing an al- most identical technical procedure to evaluate flotation of hematite, magnetite, and goethite with various fatty acids, including oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids of the highest purity obtainable, found: "The effectiveness of 18-carbon unsaturated fatty acids, as collectors for hematite, decreases with increase in the number of non-conjugated double bonds."' In the foregoing investigations, collector efficacy was measured on the basis of reagent addition in moles per liter.

One of the major problems facing today's mining industry is how to manage people and control costs in the underground mine. It is a problem with a solution. Because of the concerted effort to find and mine minerals near the surface, open-pit mine opportunities for certain minerals are becoming more limited; the mining industry will eventually be forced to produce more and more from underground mines in order to obtain those resources necessary to sustain our civilization. Although much technical progress has been made towards solving problems associated with the underground mine, such as - mine design, ventilation, rock support, equipment, and blasting techniques, little has been written on managing mining personnel. Much of what is being taught and practiced today about human relations, motivation, incentives, etc., applies to the underground miner, but the uniqueness of his group dictates a different treatment from that associated with the typical construction worker or factory employee. The difference lies with the kind of man attracted to underground mining and his working environment. Anyone who has had the responsibility of managing an underground mine would agree it is a unique problem.

During the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field: I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing, save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any may compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to shorn evident signs of exhaustion. The present work has been done in an endeavor to correlate and complete the data on the constitution of alloys of zinc with other common metals, dealing exclusively, however, with the zinc-rich alloys in which the zinc content is between 90 and 100 per cent. This investigation has included the systems lead-zinc, cadmium-zinc, iron-zinc, copper-zinc, aluminum-zinc, nickel-zinc, manganese-zinc, cobalt-zinc, tin-zinc, and magnesium-zinc. The important ternary system zinc-lead-cadmium and the zinc corners of other ternary systems have been investigated in connection with this work but will not be dealt with here. Zinc does not form a single homogenous zinc-rich solid solution over any considerable range of concentration with any of the metals mentioned. A limited range of solid solubility is said, by previous investigators, to occur in several cases and certain effects on the properties of zinc are attributed (with varying degrees of consistency among different writers) to the presence of certain other metals dissolved in zinc. The increasing use of rolled zinc and the possibilities offered by zinc as a casting alloy in certain fields have made it essential to determine precisely these equilibrium relationships. In carrying out this investigation reliance was placed chiefly on two methods, conductivity measurements and microscopic analysis. The first method proved valuable in determining the existence and extent of solid solubility. The second method stands alone as a means of determining structural characteristics and supplements the first method in the measurement of solid solubility. The scleroscopic hardness of all conductivity specimens was measured partly for its value from the point of view of mechanical properties and partly as a check on the conductivity curves in indicating the limits of solid solubility. No hardness curves are included in this paper, for in no case were they important in arriving at the constitution of any system. MEASUREMENT of zeta potentials is a useful tool to study the surface chemistry of minerals under flotation conditions.1,2 Because there is continued interest in this approach, the apparatus for obtaining zeta potentials of nonconducting solids by the streaming potential method is outlined here. Fig. 1 illustrates the streaming potential apparatus." The streaming potential cell or plug consists of two 24/40 standard ground joints (4) joined with a piece of pyrex tubing 60 mm long and 12 mm in diam (5). The electrodes are made of bright platinum disks 19 mm in diam and 1 mm thick through which 0.5-mm holes have been drilled (6). To the surface of each is welded a piece of 80-mesh platinum gauze. Each electrode is permanently mounted on the ends of the inner parts of the two standard joints by means of a platinum wire (7) which connects it to the tungsten seal at the end of the cell (8). For ease in cleaning and handling the apparatus, the streaming cell is fastened to the 500-ml reservoir flasks (1) by means of two 18/9 ball and socket joints (2). This particular arrangement permits passage of the solution in either direction through the plug of particles. Flow of solution can be stopped by a stopcock (3). One of the reservoir flasks has a large opening to permit insertion of either a thermometer or a pair of electrodes for measuring pH of solutions within the system. In making the experiments, the plug is filled with 48 to 65-mesh particles, but a layer of 28 to 35-mesh particles is placed at each electrode to prevent any of the finer particles from passing through holes in the electrodes. The assembled apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 2. To eliminate CO2 from the solutions, all experiments are conducted in a nitrogen atmosphere. Nitrogen, used to drive solutions through the plug, is passed through a bottle of concentrated KOH solution to remove CO2 (9). A 9-liter ballast reservoir (10) is used to maintain a more nearly uniform pressure. A series of stopcocks controls the direction of flow nitrogen to the flasks (11). Tubes of as-carite prevent backflow of CO2 into the system (12). Driving pressure, which can be set at any desired value, is measured with either a water manometer (13) or a mercury manometer (14). Reservoir flasks have side arms for making pressure corrections for the difference in water levels in the flasks. Streaming potentials are measured by the circuit illustrated in Fig. 2. The electrodes from the plug are connected through mercury wells (15) to a reversing switch (16), which reverses the polarity of the electrodes depending on the direction of flow of solution through the plug. The streaming potential is measured with a Leeds and Northrup type K2 potentiometer (17). Proper choice of null instrument is important because Eq. 1 assumes that the current which escapes through the measuring instruments is negligible. A preferred orientation is known to occur frequently in the columnar zone of castings. This has been attributed to a preferred direction of growth. However, no satisfactory mechanism was proposed by which the preferred direction of growth led to the preferred orientation. The purpose of this work has been to establish this mechanism. It has been found that in general the observed preferred orientations only develop when the preferred directions of growth reveal themselves by dendritic growth. A mechanism based on this premise is found to be in agreement with the experimental data obtained in the course of this work. WHEN a liquid metal is allowed to solidify in a mold, it usually freezes in three stages, distinguished from each other by the size and shape of the grains. The first zone to freeze (the chill zone near the mold wall) consists of relatively fine grains that are equiaxed in shape and random in orientation. The next zone consists of crystals that are elongated in the direction of heat flow, i.e., normal to mold wall. These crystals are much larger in cross section than the crystals of the chill zone and have a very strongly preferred orientation. This is the columnar zone. The final zone, which is absent in very pure metals, is again equiaxed and randomly oriented, but usually has a much coarser grain size than the chill zone. The purpose of this study is to describe and account for the crystal size and orientation in the columnar zone. The occurrence of a preferred orientation in the columnar zone is well known, and in 1940, Greninger' suggested that it is apparently related to dendritic growth although at that time the only data were for metals with the face-centered-cubic structure. Table I shows that the direction of dendritic growth and the crystal axis that follows the heat flow direction coincide in all cases so far studied. The term "dendritic growth" is used here to represent the branched type of morphology that is characteristic of growth into supercooled melts.' In addition to the supercooling which is necessary before nucleation will occur at the mold wall, the necessary supercooling for continued dendritic growth can be provided in a mold by heat flow into the already formed solid at an interface whose Liquidus temperature is depressed by an accumula-

IN order to get an idea as to the strength of steel rails, it will be well to review the tests to which iron rails have been subjected. In England, Mr. Ashcroft found that the best 80 pound rails broke under a 300 pound weight, falling 15 feet. In Germany the Society of Railway tyfanage1-s determined 011 and have long applied a test of 1000 pounds falling 101/2 feet, as the standard which all first-class iron rails must reach. In this country no inspection nor test is applied, but tests made show that iron rails fro; our most reliable makers, break under a G foot fall of a 1500 pound drop as an extreme test, most of those tested breaking under a far less test; some breaking with less than a 3 foot fall of the same weight. Everywhere where steel has been used, engineers have come to the conclusion that some test is required to show the regularity and strength of the product. As compared with iron, the tests which steel will stand are wonderful. After numerous experiments partially based on the experience of the rail-mill at Graz, belonging to the Southern Railway of Austria, the Society of German Railway Managers fixed upon a test of 2000 pounds falling 138 feet. They found that this test represented the steel which suited their necessities, and also found that with steel of otherwise average purity, this test represented about one-half per cent. of carbon, and made it a rule to take no steel containing under three-tenths of a per cent. of carbon, because it was too soft. They expressed a hope that a harder steel could soon be made tough enough to stand the same test. I n England, a test was adopted of 2240 pounds, falling 15 to 17 feet on the rail on heavy bearings. This test has been found satisfactory under heavy traffic on average road-beds, and has been invariably

The Powder River Basin of northeast Wyoming was the first area in the state to receive attention during the early days of uranium exploration. Although the uranium occurrences are many and widespread, most of the known ore deposits are quite small and difficult to mine. As a result of this, detailed regional exploration in the Powder River Basin has been neglected. The uranium ore deposits occur in that part of the Wasatch Formation that is of earliest Eocene age, and they are scattered over an area of about 400 square miles. All uranium ore deposits are associated with red beds or altered sandstones within the Wasatch Formation. Uranium ore was first shipped from the region in 1953. Total production through June of 1965 is 506,257 tons of uranium ore containing 1,922,527 pounds of U3O8. The average grade of ore is about 0.19 per cent U3O8. The major producing area of the Powder River Basin is the Monument Hill district where about 91 per cent of the basin's total uranium ore has been mined. The source of uranium is presumed to have been the Oligocene, Miocene, and perhaps Pliocene tuffaceous rocks that once overlay the area. Joints, fractures, and permeable beds or zones were the passageways for the migration of uraniferous waters from the overlying beds to the Eocene host rocks.

Although certain physical mechanical properties of rocks have been claimed to give an estimate of penetration rate in percussive drilling, the authors' work shows that the correlation of penetration rate with individual rock properties is Poor. The authors have developed a good correlation between penetration rate and a set of rock properties but the relation is complex. Energy per unit volume has been used as a measure of penetration rate in percussive drilling by Hustrulid and Fairhurst; however, their test setup is large wing a full size drill bit. The authors determined the minimum energy for unit volume Ev min for any rock at the optimum index angle in a simple laboratory drop tester wing a sharp microbit with a tip angle of ll0°. This Ev min has been found to correlate well with penetration rate obtained in controlled laboratory drilling in different rocks for different stages of bit wear. A comprehensive relation has been developed between penetration rate and Ev min.

The potential iron ores of Michigan can be classified from the stand-point of the predominant impurities into siliceous, sulphurous and phos-pllorous ores. Research on the flotation of each of these classes of ore was carried out in the following manner. The flotative properties of the valuable minerals of iron and of the worthless and deleterious ones were first determined under carefully controlled conditions. This information was then applied to synthetic mixtures of these minerals, which simulated the potential ores. Finally, data obtained during the two foregoing stages of the investigation were used in the flotation beneficiation of samples of the potential ores. Hematite is the most important mineral of iron in each of the above classes of iron ores. This paper deals with a study of that mineral in the very nearly pure state. There are two varieties of the mineral—specular hematite and massive hematite. The latter is the principal variety, but the former is an impor-tant' mineral of iron in some of the potential ores. Because of this condition, flotation research was performed with both varieties. This research consisted essentially of: (I) a survey of the literature on hematite flotation, (2) the preparation of pure massive hematite, (3) the preparation of pure specular hematite, (4) the development of a laboratory procedure and (5) flotation experimentation. For the purpose of this discussion, the results of previous work on the flotative properties of hematite can be summarized as follows: Specular hematite has been readily floated with terpineol and sodium oleate or heptylic acid1. Further, hematite has been likewise floated with a proprietary frother and oleic acid or other soluble oils2. Following the usual custom, three meetings are planned for the year. The Mid-Continent meeting will be held at Oklahoma City, Okla., Oct. 7 and 8, and the California meeting is planned for Los Angeles, probably also early in October. A program along the usual lines is under way for the annual New York meeting. Discussion and planning of the year's activity started in March. An effort is under way to secure papers dealing with some overlapping phases of engineering, petroleum geology, geophysics, law, economics, refining, etc. The main reason for attempting a program along these lines is the belief that unusually interesting technical papers can be obtained. The degree of specialization in the technical and related fields has permitted but few individuals to develop a sufficiently comprehensive viewpoint. Also, at times the developments in a particular field are capable of giving great stimulus toward much needed solutions of difficult problems in others fields of activity. With the coming of the period of restriction of production to market demand, many changes have occurred in policy and technique of petroleum production. Some changes have been advances, others have been of retrograde nature. It seems doubtful whether the adjustment to the condition of excess producing capacity has been complete or sound in some major respects. Many changes are in progress and others need to be initiated. The industry has excessive producing capacity so far as immediate market demand is concerned, but reserves for several years hence are generally believed insufficient. Exploration and discovery should go forward but development should proceed with caution and under control. Property rights should be clarified and protected for the new condition— without excessive cost for drilling wells that serve no purpose except that of giving some protection to property rights at the cost of an increased price to the consumer. Under the more steady condition of assured supply for the immediate future, as compared to the hand-to-mouth condition of wide-open production, a greatly advanced technique of development and production is possible and is being developed. Great progress has been made, but much remains to be done. Along some important lines progress can be effected only by better understanding between the engineer and the geologist, the lawyer, the politician, the geophysicist, etc. There is need

Mankind has found lime and limestone a useful mineral commodity since the dawn of history. The ancient Egyptians knew how to make use of it as a building material, and it has been used in agriculture for centuries. More recently, limestone became a cheap ingredient in some chemical processes, in metallurgy and in the manufacture of alkalis. The consumption of lime and limestone has never diminished; in fact, the process of lime production remained the same until the recent introduction of the modern rotary or vertical kilns. However, the demands of industry and agriculture are changing the usage patterns of the commodity. The USBM now keeps statistics according to type- quicklime, hydrated lime and dead-burned dolomite -and according to market, whether open or captive.

Until recently, the universal practice in New Zealand was dry-crushing and direct cyaniding. With ores containing no mineral sulphides, and little or no coarse gold, 'this method, in spite of its many disadvantages, gave excellent results, and was by far the best one available, pending the solution of the slimes-problem. But the situation has now been changed. The successful treatment of the slimes, enabling the mines not only to do away with dry-crushing, but also to deal with the mineralized ores of the lower levels, which are, for obvious reasons, quite unsuited to that method of treatment, has made wetcrushing universal; and this may be taken as satisfactory proof of its superiority over the former practice. This paper reports on the results of a fundamental investigation of the behavior of rock under impact of a chisel-shaped bit. Drop-tester studies were conducted with strain gauges attached to the rock and striking bit-edge. It was established that rock behaves viscoelastically. Little correlation was found to exist between the strain waveforms detected on the rock surface and in the bit; thus, strain-time curves obtained with transducers mounted on the bit cannot be used to explain the sequence of events in rock breakage. It is estimated that nearly 1 per cent of the total energy of the blow is expended in permanent deformation of the rock. The strain- energy distribution on a rock surface as a result of chisel impact, which follows a simple law, is presented graphically. Experiments also were conducted with gauges embedded in the rock vertically below the line of impact and at an angle of approximately 45' to the vertical. No essential difference was observed in the type of wave obtained with embedded gauges and with gauges on the surface, as may have been anticipated from theory. INTRODUCTION Through the ages great strides have been taken towards improvement of the various techniques applied in the breakage of rock. Indeed, numerous applications of the rock-failure process are an integral part of present-day industry, including oil well drilling. Yet, astonishingly, little is known regarding the behavior of rock under dynamic loading or the mechanism of rock failure. The value of impact loading studies from the point of view of drilling is evident, however, and requires little elaboration because impact of a chisel edge on rock forms the basic action constituting most common methods of drilling. RELATED STUDIES Impact studies of communition and fragmentation conducted by Fahrenwald, et a1,8 Poncelet,l7 Axelson, et a1,2 Piret,16 Hartman and pfleider,ll Charles and deBruyn,5 and others have been of considerable help in understanding rock-breakage phenomena. Further insight into the basic action of drilling and penetration has been obtained by the work of Irving,13 Cherkasov and Shlyapin,6 BOrcherdt,3 Shepherd,19 Shreiner and Pavlova,20 Drilling Research Inc.7 Hartman,10 Appl and Gatley1 and several other investigators. However, knowledge concerning the stresses and strains induced in the rock and bit during impact remains scant. Recent photoelastic studies by Tandanand and Hartman (1961. 1962)22, 23 have shed light on stress distributions and Fracturing produced in plastics by chisel-shaped bits. In the field of transient strain Pulses and their role in rock drilling, the only extensive work has been performed by Drilling Research Inc. (DRI). They attached strain gauges to the shank of a bit and conducted drop-tester studies, using a die-shaped bit to obtain force-time diagrams. Their work led to the conclusion that, for a given rock type, the first peak of force occurs at a fixed level regardless of the total energy in the system, provided it exceeds a certain minimum threshold level. Further, on this basis an explanation was offered for the sequence of events in crater formation as the result of a single blow on rock. PURPOSE OF PRESENT STUDY The investigations reported in this paper were conducted in a manner similar to the DRI approach, but with the objective of determining the strain distribution in the rock around the area of bit impact and, to a limited extent, the strain in the chisel-shaped bit itself. Although water will displace oil from a petroleum reservoir to a greater extent than gas will, there are some reservoirs in which gas rather than water should be used for pressure maintenance. This is indicated by the high-percentage oil recovery in the case history reports on the Pickton field1 in East Texas and the Raleigh field2 in Mississippi. In gas cycling, total oil recovery includes vaporized products from the immobile oil in addition to oil produced by displacement. If a large part of the immobile oil is vaporized, total oil recovery may be higher than that obtainable from pressure maintenance by water injection. However, the amount of immobile oil vaporized may range from almost 0 to 100 percent, and no simple and reliable method has been presented in the literature for calculating oil vaporization. Development of such a method was the purpose of this study. Several papers concerning the calculation of oil vaporization have been published,3 6 and each is based on the concept dealing with K values — equilibrium constants for the various components in reservoir oils. (K for a component in a system of vapor and liquid in equilibrium is the mole fraction in the vapor phase divided by the mole fraction in the liquid phase.) This appears to be the most logical approach. Yet, the problem is too great for a perfect solution, even with modem laboratories to analyze oils and high-speed digital computers to perform calculations; the number of components in reservoir oils is too large. Because of their complexity no two reservoir oils are exactly alike. Also, K values change not only with variations in pressure and temperature but also with composition of the reservoir oil. In addition, during gas cycling, the lighter hydrocarbons tend to vaporize first. Thus, the reservoir oil becomes more dense and less volatile as gas cycling continues. Furthermore, the greatest amount of oil vaporization occurs near the injection well. Therefore, a simplified method is required for calculating oil vaporization because a rigorous method is not practical. The present methods of calculating vaporization generally require knowledge of the reservoir oil composition in which the mole fractions of the lighter components through hexanes are given; the remaining oil is described as C, + (heptanes and others of greater molecular weights). Assigning one K value for the C,+ system provides the simplest solution, but this incorrectly assumes that K for C, + does not change as gas cycling continues. This assumption can cause large errors because the K value may become less than a thousandth of the original after a large amount of oil vaporization. Another way to solve the problem is to determine changing K values for C, + according to how much of the C, + has been vaporized. To determine these values a sample of the reservoir oil is injected into a pressure-volume cell, and dry gas is batched in and out of the cell. THE Searles Lake orebody is located in the north- west corner of San Bernardlno County. It is a dry lake bed with an exposed salt surface covering an area of 12 square miles. Recoverable mineral values are contained in the mother liquor below the surface of the lake. Stratification in the lake bed has separated the brine into two bodies which dlffer in composition. Although liquor is processed from both bodies, this paper will discuss only the upper structure brine. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical cross-section of the two commercial orebodies. The orebody is composed of a porous salt deposit 70 to 90 ft deep. The upper structure is separated from the lower orebody by a 12 to 16-ft thick impervious mud seam, as shown in Fig. 1. These salt structures are composed of 55 pct solid-phase salts and 45 pct voids which are filled with the original mother liquor. The brine wells are drilled to the separating mud seam and cased to wlthin 10 ft of the bottom. This is done to draw the brine horizontally from the bottom of the structure. It is pumped with multistage centrifugal pumps Into the plant at the rate of 3 milllon gal per day. The first process that was successful was developed by Charles P. Grimwood for the recovery of potash. The first evaporator unit was built in 1916. In the early twenties, Dr. Morse worked out a process for the recovery of borax. This made the cycle more efficient, as the end liquor could be sent back to the evaporators rather than being sewered. In 1926 the American Potash & Chemical Corp. was formed as a new company, and the entire plant was remodeled. The plant at that time produced only potash, borax, and boric acid. Since then the American Potash & Chemical Corp. has added processes for the production of USP boric acid, refined potash, sulphate of potash, soda ash, salt cake, lithium concentrates, Pyrobor (Na2B4O7) bromine, phosphoric acid, and lithium carbonate. The main plant cycle may be depicted as a closed cycle, see Fig. 2. The raw material, brine, enters the cycle to be mixed with the end liquor, known as ML2, from the pentahydrate borax crystallizers. The mixture of these two forms evaporator feed. Evaporator feed is pumped to the evaporators where it is concentrated, with respect to potash and borax. In the same operation water vapor, sodium chloride, salt trap salt, and clarifier salt are removed from the cycle, see Fig. 3 for potash plant product. The evaporators produce a concentrated liquor which contains approximately 19.5 pct KCI. This liquor is diluted as it enters the potash plant to keep all salts, except potash (KCI, 97.0 pct) in solution. Here the moist potash leaves the cycle at 100°F. The end liquor, known as ML1, is pumped to the borax pentahydrate crystallizers, where crude borax pentahydrate is crystallized and removed as solid phase. The ML2 is sent back to pan feed to be reconcen-trated, see page 207. Note that the only water to leave the cycle is in the form of vapor and moisture in the solid phase products crystallized. Thus there is a constantly cycling volume of liquor to which brine is added. Since the volume of liquor cycled does not increase, the brine is, in effect, evaporated to dryness. This would be true if there were no liquor losses. But, as in all processes, there are always unavoidable and accidental losses which reduce the volume of cycling liquors. The losses must be made up with brine. The concentration process is the beginning and the end of the cycling liquors. In this process there are three evaporator units of the triple effect counter-current type, that is, there are three pans in each unit and the heat flows in one direction while the liquor flows the other way through the evaporator pans, see Fig. 4. During the evaporation process a great deal of sodium chloride, burkeite, some sodium carbonate monohydrate, and a little lithium-sodium phosphate are crystallized. The volume of these salts is so great that they must be removed as they are formed or the process would come to a standstill. Brine and recycled mother liquor No. 2 enter the third effect evaporator pan from the evaporator feed storage tanks, see Fig. 5. A steady flow of liquor is removed from the bottom of the No. 3 pan and is pumped through the No. 3 cone of the salt trap, a clear liquor being returned to the NO. 3 pan. A portion of this clear liquor is pumped to the second effect pan. This process is repeated in each pan. The liquor from the No. 2 pan is pumped through the No. 2 salt trap cone and returned to the No. 2 pan.

IN these days, when detailed investigations of stratigraphy, structure, and sand conditions so frequently result in the discovery of new oil fields, and applause from oil companies and the public, geologists do well to walk humbly, and punctiliously to admit that the geologic principles controlling the distribution of oil and gas have as yet been discovered only in part, and that what remains yet to be learned is probably vastly more than what is already known. The few experiments already at-tempted have been fragmentary, and somewhat desultory, and however positive each of us may be with respect to certain theoretical conclusions, many of the fundamental questions as to the origin and mode of occurrence of petroleum are subject to radical disagreement. Of the chemical changes attending the generation of petroleum from organic matter, little is actually known. Most of the postulated formulas are liable to be misleading, through ignorance of essential factors. Open-mindedness is therefore a prime essential at the present stage of our science. Nevertheless, adopting the hypothesis that oil originates in some manner fundamentally connected with the organic theory, and in possible departure from such open-mindedness, the writer will pay no attention to the so-called inorganic theory, since every attempt to apply this theory to the study of old oil fields, or to the discovery of new ones, affords cumulative evidence of its inadequacy. In this paper, some of the factors affecting the occurrence of petroleum that the writer believes worthy of consideration by the prospector for oil in any new region will be discussed. Some of these, which are less generally understood, will be considered somewhat in detail. Other points, the significance of which cannot now be determined, require more field study, and for that reason are here brought to the attention of the field geologist. On the other hand, certain theoretical points which do not bear especially on the oil possibilities of a new region will be given little
