IN order to discuss the subject intelligently, it will be necessary to touch briefly on the forms in which sulphur is supposed to exist in coking coal to be carbonized in beehive or byproduct ovens. Sulphur is known to exist in coal as sulphides and sulphates, as can be determined experimentally. Then there is the so-called organic sulphur, i.e., sulphur in combination with the carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen of the coal, about which much has been written, but nothing definitely proven in an experimental way. In fact, so far as we know, there never has been developed a satisfactory and conclusive method in the laboratory for the direct determination of organic sulphur. For most coking coals, it can be safely assumed that the preponderance of sulphur is in the form of pyrite (FeS2). When exposed to comparatively low temperatures during the coking process, it loses its sulphur according to the following chemical reaction: 7FeS2 = Fe7S8 + 6S. It will be seen, therefore, that six out of the 14 atoms of sulphur (or 42.8 per cent.) are expelled, or volatilized. Fe7S8 remains in the coke as pyrrhotite, or magnetic sulphide of iron; this accounts for the highly magnetic properties of the powdered coke. A more commonly accepted reaction is FeS2 = FeS + S, in which the straight sulphide of iron is produced with 50 per cent. volatilization of sulphur. In the beehive methods of coke making, air is introduced in sufficient amounts to carry on the distilling and the coking processes, and the sulphur is oxidized along with the other volatile products: First, into sulphur dioxide (SO2), known by the pungent and suffocating odoremitted from the trunnel head; second, into sulphuric anhydride (SO3); and, finally, into sulphuric acid, as it comes into contact with the air and moisture. In a properly regulated draft on a beehive oven, there is never complete combustion of the gases. In other words, the coking process should be carried on in a reducing atmosphere, and a low-grade producer gas kept issuing from the trunnel head. I. Description of the Clinton Ores and Associated Rocks. The Clinton rocks in Stone valley comprise (1) thick layers of deep-red shale, (2) layers of reddish-gray shale interspersed with beds of sandstone and thin beds of extremely fossiliferous limestone, and (3) yellowish-gray shales alternating with thin layers of olive-colored shales. These layers of shale are all very thin and are at no point massive.' A bed of gray-white sandstone varying in thickness from 12 to 30 ft. occurs in the upper portions of the Clinton shales. This is called the ore sandstone, a name given to it by Rogers and adopted also by the Second Pennsylvania Geological Survey. It is the surest guide to the presence of the iron-ore bed, which lies below its lower edges at distances varying from 10 to 20 ft. This ore sandstone, in the valley, lies generally at very low inclinations, but often is locally subjected to considerable changes in dip. At its outcrop this ore sandstone weathers very easily and yields a rather sparse crop of stone, composed of dirty, iron-stained boulders. Upon the roads these boulders are quite well rounded, and bear fragments of crinoid stems and other fossil forms. The ore sandstone exhibits at many points evidences of former movements in this very great thickness of the shales, and as it is the only stratum in this series competent to transmit and record stresses due to structural movements, its evidence is of considerable importance in determining the occurrence of movements in times past.

IT is no great exaggeration to say that present grinding practice and economics are largely determined by lining design. A record of outstanding liner wear can be achieved with any liner surface pattern that will positively lock the outer layer or layers of grinding media. With no slippage, lining wear is bound to be slight. At the same time, popular practice calls for tumbling loads of about 50 pct of mill volume to obtain maximum grinding capacity. Innumerable parallel grinding investigations have verified that optimum speed for such a mill lies within 70 to 85 pct of theoretical critical speed. If the mill is speeded up to 100 pct of critical, little or no grinding can be accomplished. Earlier Work on Supercritical Grinding: First investigations concerning grinding at supercritical speeds seem to be very old. Remarkable work on the subject has been performed by White,&apos; and his experiments have been described and summarized by Richards.&apos; White&apos;s contributions seem to have passed unnoticed by Fahrenwald,2,3 whose extensive experiments have been well presented, yet apparently very little appreciated. Additional work on grinding at supercritical speed has been reported, e.g., by Lewenson and Tscherny,&apos; USSR; Anselm and Grunder,&apos;, Germany: and Rose and Evans." Great Britain. Subcritical and Supercritical Speeds: In the formula of the critical speed given in the textbooks of mineral dressing, no factor indicating the coefficient of friction is generally included. If this factor = 1.0, which is equivalent to grinding conditions in a mill provided with heavily ribbed lining, the formula of the critical speed holds as such and grinding is possible at subcritical speeds only. In a mill equipped with a smooth or relatively smooth lining, the numerical value of the friction factor in the denominator of the formula becomes <1.0, indicating that grinding at supercritical speeds should be possible in such mills. It has been recently shown by the author&apos; that a wide supercritical speed range will become available for grinding—and especially for fine grinding—if the basic conditions within the mill have been selected properly. Mathematical analysis of mill dynamics at supercritical speeds&apos; has indicated that the mill speed may be increased if: 1) total mass of grinding medium decreases, 2) mass of the individual grinding piece increases, and 3) the coefficient of friction between the outer layer of medium and the mill lining decreases. It is obvious that the mass of the individual grinding piece will be affected by its shape and by its specific gravity. The coefficient of friction decreases with: 1) increasing smoothness of liner surface, 2) increasing roundness of the grinding piece, 3) increasing fineness of material to be ground, 4) decreasing pulp density, and 5) decreasing hardness (abrasiveness) of the mineral to be ground. In a mill equipped with heavily ribbed lining, practically no size reduction will take place between the lining and the outer layer of tumbling medium, because slippage is prevented. In the overwhelming majority of today&apos;s mills the grinding accomplished is by virtue of cataracting and/or cascading media with some action within the tumbling charge. Sub-critical speeds only can be applied. In grate-type or peripheral discharge mills equipped with a smooth lining a tumbling load of any kind of common medium occupying about 50 pct of mill volume will behave in such a way that practically no slippage will take place. This has been verified in experiments run by the author in the laboratory and in pilot plant mills&apos; equipped with smooth lining. Again, the operation is limited to the subcritical range. In a mill with a smooth lining, grinding will be possible either at subcritical speeds or within a wide supercritical speed range as soon as the basic requirements for a desired speed are fulfilled. In a mill operated at supercritical speed, any point on the liner surface proceeds at a speed greater than that indicated by the formula of the critical speed, while any grinding piece situated in the outer layer of the medium against the lining proceeds in the same direction at a speed less than that indicated by the critical speed. This speed difference produces a very effective attrition grinding zone between the liner surface and the outer layer of the medium. The share of attrition grinding of the total grinding accomplished increases rapidly with increasing speed in the supercritical speed range. The smooth surface of the mill lining may be well illustrated by the surface of a bucking board. The outer ball layer may be similarly represented by the lower surface of a muller. If the bucking board, the material to be ground, and the muller all proceed in the same direction at the same speed, no grinding will result. This is the general situation in the mills of today. If, however, the muller is pulled with respect to the board, moving or stationary, grinding will be accomplished effectively. Although grinding in today&apos;s mills is primarily the result of cataracting and/or cascading media, the principal place of grinding at high supercritical speeds will be the attrition zone.&apos; In the mineral dressing laboratory of the State Institute for Technical Research. The diffusion of metal atoms into the crystal lattice of another metal and the assumption of regular positions to form a homogeneous alloy are some of the most fundamental phenomena of structural metallurgy. The mechanism of this process has been the subject of a great deal of study from many viewpoints, but the picture is still far from complete. It is generally believed that if one metal is to diffuse into another, the first must have some solubility in the second1. This means that the solvent must be able to accommodate the stranger atoms, either on points of its own lattice or in the interstices between, without losing its own crystal-lographic identity. It is also a general observation that cold-working is a distinct aid in the diffusion process, causing it to take place with greater rapidity at the same temperature or with the same speed at a lower temperature. There is considerable doubt, however, as to the real significance of the deformation in its effect on the diffusion mechanism. Several factors associated with the cold-working may be responsible for the increased diffusion rate. The plastic deformation causes a distortion of the solvent lattice, which may be an aid in the assimulation of atoms of another kind. There are many references2 in the literature that suggest that some distortion or "loosening" of the lattice is necessary for atomic migration and that diffusion cannot take place in the undis-torted lattice. On the other hand, it may be that the cold-working causes an increase in surface of contact between the two metals through fragmentation or provides a more intimate contact that is necessary for diffusion. There are several exceptions from the practical operating viewpoint that might be taken with the paper. The author recommends using a "curve" in plotting safety factors of ropes and suggests that the U. S. Bureau of Mines change its present "step curve" method to the "curve" method. From an engineering theoretical point of view that is possible, but from a practical standpoint it is not possible. Rope manufacturers fabricate their ropes in diameter gradients of 1/16 in. to 1/4 in. which automatically sets up a step pattern gradient. If ropes were manufactured in the diameter gradients of 1/1000 of an inch or thereabouts, the curve method could be used. Also, from a practical standpoint, if an operator is to hoist from a depth of 4000 ft, for example, he will determine the size of the rope necessary for that depth, and it is only natural that he will have safety factor to spare at lesser depths, and in plotting this excess capacity the natural end result is a curve. The U. S. Bureau of Mines tables are set up so that the operator will know what size rope at the required safety factor he will need at his maximum depth. He is not concerned with lesser depths. W. A. Boyer (author&apos;s reply)-Mr. Grant states, "Rope manufacturers fabricate their ropes in diameter gradients of 1/16" to 1/4" which automatically sets up a step pattern gradient." There is no connection or relationship between the "size" pattern gradient and the present "factor of safety" step pattern gradient. The inherent factor of safety values for any particular size of rope with a given connected load when plotted for various depths is a curve, and with modern rope material and construction the inherent factor of safety curve is quite far removed from the present recommended factor of safety step curve. This is shown quite clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 of my paper.

February, 1926) The Pioneer mining district, better known as the Superior district, from its principal town, is located in Pinal County in south-central Arizona about 80 miles east of Phoenix and 22 miles west of Miami. The region embraces a, confused series of mountain ranges of moderate height but precipitous slopes, between which lie irregular valleys filled with alluvial detritus. The average elevation is about 2800 ft. in the valleys and the summits of the ranges reach 2000 ft. above this. Superior is situated on the north bank of Queen Creek where it emerges from one of those ranges into a more or less basin-shaped valley. The drainage of Queen Creek is to the southwest and the flood waters spread out and lose themselves in the desert northeast of Florence, the county seat of Pinal County. The Magma copper mine (Fig. 1) is the only producer in the district. Although discovered in 1875, its production has been important only

IN THE year just past there were produced in the United States about 170,000,000 tons of sand and gravel. Much of this was pit-run material used for gravelling roads and as railroad ballast on lines that did not carry heavy traffic. But more than half of it was marketed as washed and sized, or graded, material. The methods used for preparing sand and gravel for the market have long been used in ore dressing and, as in ore dressing, depend on differences in the specific gravity of two substances or in the size or weight of particles. But many changes in the design and operation of plants and machines have been necessary. In ore dressing, the concentrate is only a small part of the feed; in sand and gravel washing, it is much the larger part of the feed. In addition, such close work as is needed when con¬centrating a metallic ore is not needed when washing gravel; the ability to put through a large tonnage is more important, and sizing, which is only a preliminary process in ore dressing, is an end to be attained. Rock crushers are found in most sand and gravel plants and they are used to break up the larger pieces from the deposit (known as boulders and cobbles) which are removed by a scalping screen. The crusher discharge is usually sent back to the scalping screen, the perforations in this screen setting the maximum size of the finished product.

Bahrein &apos;Island.—In 1936 the Bahrein Petroleum Co. continued drilling additional wells to further increase production. In all, 39 flowing wells have now been finished and five others are drilling. A second well has been deepened for prospecting the deeper horizons but has not been successfully completed as a commercial producer. In addition, a well has recently been drilled near the eastern limit of the producing area for edge-water observation. The present system places wells 3000 ft. apart in a rhombic grid, or about one well to 179 acres. The total production for the year was 4,644,635 barrels. It is expected that refinery capacity of 20,000 bbl. per day will have been completed by July, 1937. A new permanent and enlarged camp with office buildings is being built. A new hospital has been constructed and two additional medical men have been added to the staff. Saudi Arabia.—In eastern Saudi Arabia, the California Arabian Standard Oil Co. has continued with the program of prospect drilling started in 1935. After the gas encountered in Dammam well No. 1 had been successfully shut off, it was completed as a small flowing well of 51" gravity oil. Dammam No. 2, which had been started in 1935, tested 3840 bbl. of approximately 50" gravity oil from a depth of 2175 ft. Dammam No. 5, before being deepened for prospecting lower productive horizons, encountered a gas zone producing 30 million feet. Five other wells on the Dammam dome are in various stages of drilling or completion. Most of these have been located principally to outline the productive area and the various producing horizons of the structure. An extensive program of geological work is being continued. In June, 1936, a well was started on the El &apos;Alat structure about 25 miles northwest of the Dammam development. Although various tar showings have been reported, the well has not yet, at 2518 ft., reached the depth at which it has been thought that productive horizons might be encountered. A prospect well is being drilled by the Kuwait Oil Co. (jointly owned by Gulf and Anglo-Iranian Oil Companies) in the Sheikdom of Kuwait. The well is near Bahra, a few miles north of Kuwait Bay and about 240 miles northwest of El &apos;Alat. To date no favorable results at depth of about 6000 ft. have been reported.

INFORMATION regarding the use of manganese alloys has hitherto been incomplete and available only from widely scattered sources. This paper attempts a systematic description of properties and uses of alloys other than manganese bronze, manganin and duralumin, which are probably the only non-ferrous alloys associated with manganese in the minds of most metallurgists.1 PROPERTIES OF MANGANESE Manganese can react either acid or basic; it is hard to obtain in the pure state; it has two different crystalline lattice structures, both of the cubic system, one stable above 850° C. and the other below 650° C., both coexisting in the intermediate range. Although the commercial product is hard and brittle, the pure metal seems to be ductile. In fact Zhemchuzhny, in Russia, was able to obtain ductile manganese and draw it to fine wires by the simple expedient of adding about 3 per cent. copper to the alumino-thermic product. Copper most probably brings the silicides, aluminides, nitrides and carbides present in the commercial product into a much less harmful form of distribution. One industrial use that can be foreseen for wrought manganese articles is as anodes for electrolytic processes in sulfate and nitrate solutions, particularly with high voltages. A practically insoluble skin of manganese peroxide is likely to form in such cases and an insoluble and strong anode material will be available. MANGANESE AS A SCAVENGER Because of its activity manganese might become the most efficient scavenger and refiner of copper, were it not for the fact that 0.01 per cent.

The oxidation of Ni-Cr alloys in 0.1 atm of oxygen has been studied at temperatures between 800" and 1200°C. For alloys with 30 wt pct or more Cr, continuous layers of Cr2O3 are formed during oxidation. In the case of alloys with chromium concentrations between approximately 5 to 30 wt pct, external scales of Cr203 are formed over grain boundaries whereas internal precipitates of Cr2O3 and external layers of NiO are formed at other areas on the alloy surface. When such conditions are present on the alloy surface, chromium diffuses laterally from those areas covered with a continuous layer of Cr2O3 to areas where a Cr2O3 sub scale exists and it is possible for the sub-scale zone to become separated from the alloy by a continuous layer of Cr2O3. Whether such a state will be attained depends upon the initial grain size of the alloy and the oxidation time. When the concentration of chromium in the alloy is less than 5 pct, Cr2O3 is formed internally both at grain boundaries and within the interior of grains and the alloy is covered with an external layer of NiO. MECHANISMS which describe the growth of oxide scales on nickel-base superalloys are complex and the effects produced by the various elements in these alloys on the oxidation behavior of superalloys are not clearly understood. In order to determine the influence of the different elements on the oxidation behavior of superalloys, it is first necessary to examine the oxidation properties of binary nickel-base systems which contain the principal elements present in the superalloys and then progressively more complex systems until compositions typical of the superalloys are attained. Chromium is present in virtually all nickel-base superalloys and the purpose of the present studies was to examine the selective oxidation of chromium in Ni-Cr alloys. The oxidation characteristics of Ni-Cr alloys have been extensively studied1-" to date principally as a result of the high oxidation resistance exhibited by some of these alloys. Ni-20Cr* has long been known *All compositions are given as wcight percent unless specified otherwise. to be oxidation resistant and is commonly used as resistance heating elements for service temperatures up to 1100°C. This alloy cannot be used for extended periods of time at higher temperatures because of the apparent reaction of the external scale with oxygen to form gaseous CrO3. In spite of the considerable work cited above some important aspects of Ni-Cr oxidation still remain unresolved. Virtually all of the previous studies agree that small additions of chromium to nickel, e.g., <10 wt pct Cr, result in increased oxidation rates as compared to that of pure nickel, whereas larger additions, e.g., 20 to 30 wt pct Cr, form alloys with substantially lower oxidation rates. The controversial aspects of the oxidation mechanisms for these alloys that still remain unresolved are as follows: 1) A description of the oxidation mechanism for the low chromium alloys. 2) A description of the oxidation mechanism for the high chromium alloys, particularly with respect to the composition of the external scale which results in the lower oxidation rates. 3) The specific alloy compositions at which the oxidation mechanism changes from that obtained for low chromium contents to that of the high chromium alloys and the reason for this transition. EXPERIMENTAL The Ni-Cr alloys listed in Table I were prepared from high purity metals by nonconsumably arc melting and casting as buttons. These alloys were then given a preliminary annealing treatment in argon at 815°C for 100 hr to promote homogeneity. Each button was cut into 0.250 in. thick sections that were subsequently cold-rolled to 0.050 in. thicknesses and annealed in argon at 815°C for 48 hr to provide a twinned, equi-axed grain structure. The grain size for these alloys was not uniform and the limits, within which the average grain size lies, are given in Table I for the single-phase alloys. All the alloys were single phase with the exception of the Ni4OCr alloy in agreement with the Ni-Cr phase diagram.&apos;&apos; Rectangular specimens were cut from the sheet to provide surface areas of approximately 2.5 sq cm. Exact areas were determined with a micrometer after surface preparation was completed. All of the specimens except the Ni-40Cr alloy and pure chromium were polished through 600-grit Sic abrasive paper, ultrasonically agitated in ethylene trichloride, rinsed with ethyl alcohol, and electro-polished. The specimens were electropolished in a 10 vol pct H2SO4 (conc), 6 vol pct lactic acid, methyl alcohol solution at 70" to 80°C for 2 min at a current density of 0.8 to 1.2 amp per sq cm. This electro-polishing procedure did not produce acceptable surfaces on the Ni-40Cr alloy nor on pure chromium and the oxidation properties of these materials were obtained for specimens polished through 600-grit Sic

The radial shrinkage during sintering of cylindrical compacts and loose aggregates of copper powder was measured. It was found to be nonuni-form from top to bottom of the samples and to depend upon the method of supporting them. The non-uniformity is due to the effect of gravity forces during sintering. Since gravity has an effect in sintering without externally applied stresses, no sharp dividing line can be drawn between conventional sintering and hot pressing. RECENT investigations of the sintering behavior of compacts1 and of loose powder aggregates2 have indicated that forces, other than those arising from surface tension effects, may play a role in shrinkage. In compacts it was shown that residual stresses from the pressing operation influence shrinkage behavior. In loose powder aggregates gravity forces due to the weight of the powder affect the ratio of shrinkage in the vertical and the horizontal direction. The main effort in the work reported here was to show that gravity plays a role also in the sintering of compacts. A few additional experiments were made confirming the effect of gravity in the sintering of loose powder aggregates. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Compacts and loose powder aggregates were prepared from irregularly shaped, electrolytic copper powder. Prior to use the powders were reduced 30 min at 400°C in dry hydrogen to remove surface oxides. Then the -325 mesh size fraction was separated from the -100 + 325 mesh fraction. The compacts were pressed at a pressure of 10,000 psi from 50 g of powder in a hardened steel die, 1 in. in diam. The height of the compacts was 0.725 i 0.005 in. An effort was made to get as uniform a green density distribution in the compacts as possible. The walls of the die were lubricated with a suspension of 3 pct of zinc stearate in acetone and the compacts were pressed using double action by first pressing the powder at 1200 psi with the die barrel supported, then removing the sup- ports and pressing to final pressure of 10,000 psi with the die barrel floating. The pressure was maintained for 10 sec. The compacts were sintered at a temperature of 925°C, generally for 1 hr. In order to maintain uniform temperature they were sintered in boats made from cylindrical copper blocks. The blocks were 2 in. in diam, either 2 or 2 1/2 in. long and, split to form the body of the boat and a lid. The body of the boat contained a cavity 1 3/8 in. wide, 1 in. deep and either 2 1/8 or 1 3/8 in. long. The longer cavity accomodated two samples, the shorter one only one sample. The uniformity of temperature distribution within the boats was checked with thermocouples welded to the top and bottom of the samples. The maximum variation between top and bottom temperatures was i 1/2°C. The actual sintering temperature was held constant within ±2°C. In order to determine the effect of gravity forces, i.e., the weight of the compacts, upon shrinkage, they were supported in the following ways during sintering: a) Full Bottom Support. The compacts rested either on a flat alundum disk or on alundum powders. b) Partial Bottom Support. The compacts rested on a graphite cylinder, 0.3 in. in diam which formed a projection on a larger graphite disk. It is difficult to balance the compact on the small projection. To avoid having the compact tip, a small hole was drilled through the compact and through the graphite disk and its projection. The graphite disk was then suspended from the lid of the boat by a thin iron wire which passed through the holes in the disk and the compact. c) Top Support, first type. A hole 3/32 in. in diam was drilled diametrically through the green compact 3/16 in. from the top of the compact. The compact was sintered suspended from an alundum rod (thermocouple protection sleeve) inserted into the hole. d) Top Support, second type. A hole was drilled axially through the center of the compact. The upper part of the hole from the top surface of the compact one fourth of the way down was 1/16 in. in diam; the lower part of the hole from the bottom surface three fourth of the way up was 3/32 in. in diam. The compact was suspended from the lid of the boat by an iron wire passing through the upper part of the hole and then tied into a knot. The loose powder aggregates were made by filling l in. deep, l in. diam cylindrical graphite molds with -325 mesh powder. WEBSTER tells us the word "extrude" means to "force, press or push out; to protrude." As applied to the metal industry, the process consists largely of forcing plastic elements (plasticity usually obtained by preheating), through dies of predetermined profiles, into constant sections of considerable length and weight. Most of the "virgin" metals are quite malleable under this process, likewise many of the commonly used "alloys" in various industries, when basic elements are proportioned or combined within the natural laws and limits of good metallurgy. Several of the foundry alloys, both ferrous and nonferrous, together with some of the heat-treatable light metal mixtures, are decidedly weak and hot short at ordinarily plastic ranges, and consequently are troublesome or quite incapable of commercial extrusion. DEVELOPMENT OF PROCESS This process was conceived some time before 1800 and during its first century was employed almost entirely in making lead pipe, plumbing fittings and coating electrical cables. As a result of contact and experience with the lead industry and presses, Alexander Dick, of London, England, is credited with first having applied the principles of extrusion to brass, and in 1894 brought out a 500-ton horizontal press powered by hydraulics. A duplicate of this unit was imported by one of the Connecticut brass mills and was in experimental operation by 1900. During the first five years of operation, this press proved the value of the method to American industry, as it immediately revolutionized and converted the manufacture of brass rod from a 15-pass cold-rolling operation, with elimination of several intermediate anneals and cleanings, to an extrusion and a finishing draw. Likewise, ornamental brass and bronze moldings formerly cast and machined were produced in one squeeze on the extruder. The extrusion operation, being entirely that of compression, deforms the material without tensile stresses and can be used on delicate mixtures under heat, which cannot be hot-worked by straight hot-rolling or roller piercing. Base slabs of clock-brass strip were early in line of development or improvement, as were the brass bronzes (Naval brass, Muntz metal, manganese bronze, and others), popular as engineering materials for bolt stock, as well as structural shapes for marine and other mild conditions of corrosion. By 1910, American engineers undertook to design tube shell extruders, but were unsuccessful. The first World War began before fabricators could procure the more substantial designs of tube extruders produced in Germany; and it was not until the middle twenties that better models of the Universal extruders (double-actioned presses), equipped with hydropneumatic accumulator systems and other modern equipment, were available in the United States.

TWO or three years ago there were submitted to me some reports of tests that had been made on a semi-oxidized ore of silver looking to its treat-ment by combined flotation and cyanidation, together with a sample of the ore, with a request that I check the tests and confirm them, if possible. These tests had been made by a machinery-supply house and with them was a flow-sheet for a proposed mill, with full details of equipment to be used in the mill. The limited data on which this was based at once attracted my attention and have caused me from time to time to put various groups of students at work to develop simpler methods of obtaining data, which it appeared should be at hand and could be obtained by simple tests before attempting to treat these ores commercially. A brief discussion of the working out of such methods may be of interest and may contribute somewhat to the de-velopment of better testing methods for the small operator who has not at his command a staff of metallurgists. Of several tests on samples of varying assay and mineralogical composition, by cyanidation alone, by flotation alone, and, by combinations of the two, the following report was perhaps the most complete and may well serve as a typical example: METALLURGICAL TEST REPORT Silver Mines Co. Semi-oxidized Ore Procedure: Ore ground to 65 mesh, given flotation treat-ment using pine oil and potassium xanthate. Flotation tailing was thickened and given cyaniding agitation in solution strength of 5 lb. cyanide per ton and 2 lb. lime per ton.

PLANS for development of the San Manuel ore- body have been worked out and are progressing parallel with construction of the surface plant. This property lies in the Old Hat mining district, Pinal County, Ariz., about a mile south of Tiger where the St. Anthony mine once produced gold, molybdenum, vanadidn, lead, and zinc. Two development shafts have been completed and serve as ingress for preparation of the 1475 haulage level and 1415 grizzly level. Three other shafts are being put down. The Nos. 3A and 3B shafts will provide the ore hoisting facilities. The No. 4 shaft, now being sunk, will be at the main mine service and supply yard, with primary function to provide the mine with supplies.

CAST-STEEL runners, while not interesting from a commercial standpoint, furnish valuable material for microscopic study. Foley1 found not only the usual ingot structure, but zones of Widmannstattian structure, which he explains as due to differential crystallization. The writer, in examining nickel-steel runners, found a type of pro-eutectoid ferrite that is unusual and most probably new. The runner in question was 8.75 cm. (3.5 in.) in diameter and analyzed at its center 2.69 per cent, nickel and 0.350 per cent. carbon and at its edge 2.62 per cent. nickel and 0.359 per cent. carbon. The macrostructure, which is the usual type, is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which are a cross-section and the longitudinal surface, respectively. Slight segregation of ferrite can be seen near the center of the segment and at other points near the edges of polyhedral grains. Stead&apos;s reagent brings out the dendritic structure within the grains as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. This texture is what would be expected of such a steel. Figs. 5 to 10 show the peculiar swirls of pro-eutectoid ferrite, the finding of which prompted this paper. These swirls, or eddies, if such a term can be applied, occur in all parts of- the runner and in all parts of the individual grains. I he tipper left-hand figure shows this ferrite at a grain boundary; the middle left-hand figure shows the inner portion of a grain; and the lower left-hand figure shows these swirls at the edge of a grain which is also the outer edge of the runner. Straight-lined ferrite associated with swirls is found in the areas of Figs. 11 and 12. The texture of the carbon-bearing constituent of the runner is shown to- some extent in Fig. 12, the pearlite being very fine or sorbitic. Higher magnification does not bring out any new features either in the peculiar ferrite or in the pearlite. Figs. 13 and 14, at 240 diameters, show the curved and straight-lined ferrite.

Equipment has been developed to utilize natural 8 Hz electromagnetic fields to measure rock resistivities. Telluric and magnetotelluric surveys have detected resistivity variations associated with geological contacts and metallic sulfide deposits. The fundamenfa1 premises of these methods are illustrated by the results of surveys across a Pleistocene-Precambrian contact in the Ottawa Valley and a near-surface sulfide deposit in Northern Quebec. Such interfaces are characterized not only by variations in apparent resistivity, but also, unexpectedly by the spatial anisotropy of the electric fields and the presence of a strong vertical magnetic field component in their vicinity. Standard geophysical electrical and electromagnetic methods (Heiland, 1940) for the determination of the electrical properties of the ground and the search of good electrical conductors necessitate the use of a transmitter and receiver which are coupled galvanically or inductively through the ground. The electrical properties of the ground are deduced from either the transfer function, or the impulse response, of the transmitter — ground — receiver system. Where deep penetration is desired these methods require powerful transmitters whose weight and size increase the cost and reduce the speed of operation. It is possible however, to resort to another class of electrical prospecting methods which employ ambient, natural electromagnetic fields in place of a transmitter.&apos;-&apos; In the audio and subaudio frequency ranges, these fields are generated by thunderstorm activity. At some distance from the seat of the disturbance, the e.m. fields propagate as plane waves with a horizontal magnetic field component. The incident wave, of course, induces currents in the ground. Where the ground is homogeneous the relation between the horizontal magnetic and horizontal electric fields vectors is particularly simple:&apos; /E/ = \[SpT/H/ (1) where: /E/ = magnitude of horizontal electric field in millivolts/kilometer (RMS) /H/ = magnitude of the orthogonal inducing magnetic field in milligammas (RMS) p = rock resistivity in ohm-meters i = frequency of measurement in c/s In practice, the ground is seldom an homogeneous half space, lateral conductivity variations exist, (in the case of base metal prospecting these are the features actually sought) and the two field vectors are no longer simply related. The ratio of E to H is still useful, however, for the determination of an "apparent" ground resistivity. From a theoretical view point, the general problem of a two dimensional fault or dyke anomaly can be separated into two distinct cases. In the first case, where the e.m. energy propagates in a direction normal to the strike, the horizontal magnetic field remains constant and is oriented along the strike of the formation.3 As shown by d&apos;Erceville and Kunetz," all the information about the anomaly is contained in measurements of the electric field component. In fact, away from the interface, the electric fields are proportional to the square roots of the resistivities:

The mickel-activated sintering of tungsten occurs in two stages of densification. A kinetic analysis of the second stage has been based on an appropriate model of the process. As in the first stage, the rate-controlling mechanism for the second stage is also the solution of tungsten in the nickel carrier phase. The transition from the relatively rapid first-stage results from the spherozdization of pores and the initiation of grain growth. Finer grain size due to higher-nickel content leads to more rapid and higher degrees of densification 1 HE sintering of tungsten is accelerated by small additions of nickel, cobalt, and iron.&apos; Experimental evidence in detail has shown that nickel-coated, hydrogen-reduced tungsten powder may be sintered to more than 90 pet of theoretical density at l100o C.2, 3 Simultaneously, a kinetic analysis of the process showed that it took place in two distinct stages. In the first stage, nickel evidently served as a carrier phase through which tungsten atoms could move. This stage was kinetically similar to the "solution-precipitation" step postulated when the carrier phase is a liquid,4 although in the Ni-W case, there is no evidence of the existence of a liquid phase either in equilibrium phase relationships or in microstruc-tures at the temperatures under consideration. It has been shown that this stage corresponds to a process which is rate controlled by a phase boundary reaction.3 More recent evidence has been presented5 showing that after the initial rapid stage of sintering, densification continues in the final stage but at a slower rate, although no mechanism for this stage of densification was defined. An analysis of later stages of densification in solid state sintering has been presented,6 but it is not directly applicable in the present case of activated or carrier phase sintering. It is the purpose of this investigation to study the final stage of nickel activated tungsten sintering in greater detail The effect of varying nickel content has been examined, and a possible kinetic mechanism defined. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Commercial hydrogen-reduced tungsten powder from Wah-Chmg Corp., having a nominal particle size of1 µ and a B.E.T. specific surface area of 5500 sq. cm per g was mixed with aqueous solutions of hydrated nickel nitrate in proportions sufficient to produce nominal compositions of 0.25, 1, 3, and 5 wt pet Ni. This solution was then evaporated to dry-ness at approximately 150" C for 15 hr. Following evaporation, the resulting powder cake was broken with a mortar and pestle and reduced in hydrogen at 800oC for 1 hr. Following reduction, the powder

The number of seismograph field crews employed in the active survey of potential oil territories is still on the increase, owing to the ever pending threat of a shortage in the supply of crude oil. It is to be expected that for years to come the seismograph will be responsible for discovering many new oil fields, both in wildcat territories and in deeper formations, and that the seismographic campaign will go on unabated. Yet improvements in instrumental design, in the field and interpretative techniques, are brought about year after year, and lead to the reshooting of areas many times surveyed previously. Notwithstanding the experience gained by the past eight years of active work in reflection seismographic surveys, the results given by this method of mapping deep formations have in many instances been at variance with the information subsequently obtained by the drill. To overcome this shortcoming, geophysicists have used closer spacing of the shot points and closer control of the depth points. The method discussed here is being used actively in the Mid-Continent region and endeavors to reduce the interpretation work to a mere mechanical technique, leaving as little as possible to the opinion of the interpreter. The New Method Field Technique.—In sectionized territory where country roads are available every mile, shot points are preferably located every 1/4 mile when six detectors are available or every % mile when eight detectors are at hand. The disposition of individual spreads is represented on Fig. I; in each case a shot point is located at the section corners. Fig. 2a represents the layout of a spread between shot points, the vibration detectors being preferably equidistantly located. Normally in the 1/4-mile control, the distance between shot points is 1320 ft. and the distance between detectors 220 ft. When shooting from shot point S.P.
