OCHRE is a semimineral composed by Nature of earth and a tincture of yellow caused by a fumosity of lead ore. By itself it is a material without any [38] metal, although when it is used in smelting it helps to melt the harsh and sour ores of metals. I do not know that it has any other use, except to painters. Bole is also a red viscous earth which has a very astringent and drying nature. It has no very apparent smell or taste, and I think that the cause of its redness lies in the fumosities of iron ore, for it is a companion to this and is found in its mines. It is an efficacious medicine against any poison and in this capacity has an action like terra sigillata* or perhaps better. In

The use of ammonia as a leaching agent has been well-documented but only recently have its advantages been fully exploited on a commercial basis. When compared with conventional sulfuric acid leaching processes, the major advantage of ammoniacal systems is their ability to reject iron and many acid consuming gangue materials. Although metallic copper, nickel, zinc, etc. are dissolved rapidly in ammoniacal liquors at ambient temperature in the presence of air the sulfide ores of these metals are more resistant to this treatment. Sherritt Gordon Mines in Canada treats sulfide concentrates at its Fort Saskatchewan plant under pressure with ammoniacal am- monium sulfate solution to solubilize the non-ferrous metal values. Typical leach operating conditions are 80-95°C and 115- 128 psig. Although the metals present in the ammonical solution could be recovered via solvent extraction techniques, Sherritt Gordon Mines currently operates a pressure reduction process using hydrogen to yield metal powders directly from the ammoniacal solution. The basic Sherritt Gordon technology has been applied world wide for the treatment of nickel/cobalt concentrates.

The reaction between CO, and aluminum in cryolite-alumina melts in contact with aluminum has been studied by passing CO2 over the melt. In unstirred melts a homogeneous reaction between dissolved metal and dissolved CO2 was observed. In stirred melts in which convection was induced by bubbling argon through the melt, the dissolved metal apparently reacted mainly with gaseous CO2. The rate of formation of CO increased slightly with increasing depth of the melt, and it did not depend on whether CO2 was passed over or bubbled through the melt. The rate of formation of CO increased with increasing area of the metal/melt interface and with the application of anodic current to the metal. It is concluded that the dissolution of metal into the melt is the rate-determining reaction. THE current efficiency in aluminum electrolysis is determined by the rate of the recombination reaction between the anode gas and the metal: 2A1 + 3CO2—A12O3 + 3CO [1] as originally stated by Pearson and waddington.1 The occurrence of this reaction in cryolite-alumina melts in contact with aluminum was first verified experimentally by Schadinger.2 Thonstad3 has shown that the reaction may proceed further to give free carbon: 2A1 + 3CO— A12O3 + 3C [2] Normally only a few percent of the CO formed undergoes such reduction. The mechanism of these reactions has not yet been clarified. Aluminum, as well as CO,, is soluble in the melt. The solubility of aluminum in cryolite-alumina melts at around 1000°C corresponds to 75 x 10- 6 mole A1 per cu cm,4 while that of CO2 is only 3 x 10-6 mole CO, per cu cm.5 Taking into account the stoichiometry of Reaction [I], the ratio between dissolved aluminum and dissolved CO2 available for the reaction in a saturated melt is about 40. Therefore, as will be shown in the following, the reaction probably mainly occurs between gaseous COa and dissolved aluminum. The dissolved aluminum presumably consists of subvalent ions of aluminum and sodium.4'6 Since the interpretation of the present results is not dependent upon the nature of this solution, the dissolved metal will be designated solely as Al+ in the following. The reaction can then be divided into four steps: A) dissolution of metal, e.g., 2A1 + Al3 — 3A1+ [3] B) diffusion of dissolved metal through a boundary layer; C) transport of dissolved metal through the bulk of the melt; D) Reaction [1]. If dissolved CO, takes part in the reaction, three additional steps embodying the dissolution and transport of CO2 must be added. schadinger2 observed, when bubbling CO2 through the melt, that the rate of formation of CO (in the following designated rfco) did not depend on the distance from the metal surface. The results also indicate that the rate of bubbling did not affect the rfco. When passing CO, over the melt, Revazyan7 found that the loss of metal did not depend on the depth of the melt above the metal or on the flow rate of CO2, and concluded that Step A is rate-determining. In an unstirred melt, however, Gjerstad and welch8 found that the rfCo decreased with increasing depth of the melt, indicating that step C was rate-determining. It thus appears that the rate control of the process depends on the experimental conditions, particularly on the convection. In the present measurements the reaction has been studied in unstirred as well as in stirred melts. EXPERIMENTAL AND RESULTS The experiments were carried out at 1000°C in a Kanthal furnace with a 10-cm uniform temperature zone (±0.l°C). The melts were made up of "super purity" aluminum (99.998 pct), hand-picked natural cryolite, and reagent-grade alumina. In experiments where alumina crucibles were used, the alumina content in the melt was close to saturation (13.5 wt pct9); otherwise it was 4 wt pct. Pure Co2 (99.85 pct) was passed over the melt, and the exit gas was analyzed for CO2 and CO by the conventional absorption method.3 From the weighed amount of CO (as CO2) the rfco was calculated as the number of moles of CO formed per min per sq cm of the surface area of the melt. The amount of carbon formed by Reaction [2] was not determined. As already indicated the rfco is much higher than the rfC, by Reaction [2]. Since the rfC probably is proportional to the rfco, the measured rfco should then the proportional to, but slightly lower than, the total rate of Reactions [I] and 121. In general the scatter of results obtained in duplicate measurements was ±5 to 10 pct, while within a given run a precision of ±3 to 5 pct was obtained. The various crucible assemblies that were used will be described below. Measurements in Unstirred Melts. When carrying out aluminum electrolysis in small alumina crucibles. Tuset10 observed that after solidification the lower part of the electrolyte was gray and contained free metal, while the upper part near the anode was white and contained no metal. One may test for the presence of free metal by treating with dilute hydrochlorid acid.

SINCE the installation at Kropfmuehl, Bavaria, of a modern flotation concentrator in 1938, the flake and fine graphite from the Passau area can now be delivered in about any normal specified carbon content of any size range up to a flake averaging about 0.7 mm. The graphite finds a wide German and export market for crucible manufacture, pencil leads, dry cells and other uses. A controversy over the origin of the graphite deposits is being resolved in favor of syngenesis rather than epigenesis. The syngenetic theory is newly supported by the yet unpublished work of Hartmann of the Bavarian Geological Survey. Development work and exploration for graphite in the area may be changed in direction as the syngenetic theory is accepted. Crystalline graphite is produced in the area east of Passau near the junction of Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia, as shown in Fig. 1. This is the only graphite area of importance in Germany, and Gra-phitwerk Kropfmuehl AG is the only operating firm in the area. The plant and mine are located at Kropfmuehl near Hauzenberg, Kreis Wegscheid, about 10 miles east of Passau. A narrow gage railway from the mine connects with the German Railway at Schaibing Bahnhof. The Pfaffenreuth mines date from about 1730. Until the early 20th century mining operations were carried out in a haphazard fashion. During World War I graphite mining and milling was increased, since it had to cover almost all of the crucible needs of the Central Powers. Between the wars some 11 mines were operated by two large and several small companies, but under the Nazis these were consolidated by 1938 into the Kropfmuehl enterprise. Kropfmuehl built a modern flotation mill to treat its own ores and small amounts of custom ores and tailings from the area. Since Graphitwerk Kropfmuehl AG was an I.G. Farbenindustry subsidiary, it has been under Military Government Property Control and probably will be sold to private German capital. Geology The country rock of the graphite area is part of the "kristallines Grundgebirge," the series of old gneissic and schistose rocks that constitutes the bed rock of most of the Bohemian basin and rims the Sudeten-land. The gneissic rocks of the graphite area are considered to have been metamorphosed during the Carboniferous period. They are bordered on the north by granite stocks and penetrated by numerous smaller granite and pegmatitic intrusive rocks, as shown in Fig. 1. The gneiss is classed as a micaceous, coarse-grained cordierite gneiss by most investigators. It is much metamorphosed by the granite, particularly in the north near the larger granite bodies. Interbedded in the gneiss are the graphite seams and lenses, and also beds and lenses of crystalline limestone containing disseminated graphite in noncommercial quantities. The gneiss, together with the included graphite and limestone seams and lenses, is cut and displaced by a number of granite sills of medium to fine grain and by a large number of diorite lamprophyre dikes and a few syenite-pegmatite dikes. The lamprophyre dikes are of various mineral compositions and textures, but many are banded and richly impregnated with pyrite; while the syenite-pegmatite dikes are coarse-grained with good crystals of titanite, pyroxene, uralite and other green amphiboles. Most investigators and the miners speak only of diorite and granite dikes cutting the graphite seams. The diorite dikes are later than the granite and some of the faulting, as is evident from Figs. 1 and 2. Individual graphite seams and lenses may be mined for thicknesses of several feet up to several scores of feet, and for distances of several hundred feet. The aggregate thickness of a series of some 20 seams of graphite, limestone and interbedded gneiss at Kropfmuehl is stratigraphically about 450 ft. Laterally, the graphite in a seam may pinch out or grade into crystalline limestone. Graphite crystals also are found disseminated in the gneiss itself, although in unmineable concentrations. The faults that cut the graphite seams carry graphite for some feet or tens of feet away from the seams, apparently mechanically. Similarily, the graphite lenses themselves often contain mechanically introduced inclusions of wall rock, probably from flowage during folding. Graphite crystals make up 10 to 30 pct of the fresh, mineable graphite lenses at Kropfmuehl, averaging about 20 to 25 pct after hand-sorting by the miners. In weathered lenses, the graphite concentration is said to be as high as 50 pct. The associated primary and hydrothermal minerals are dom-inantly feldspar and calcite, plus quartz, pyrrhotite, pyrite, biotite and occasional garnet, hornblende, sphalerite and galena. Associated secondary minerals include kaolin, nontronite, mangano-oxide-silicates (mog), adularia and chlorite. The superimposed suite of siliceous cementation minerals present consist largely of opal, chloropal, chalcedony, jasper, and hyalite. The kaolin is of special interest since it too was mined as early as 1730 and was used in the well-known Nymphenburg porcelain from 1756 on. The kaolin is derived from the gneiss and the syenite pegmatites. The crystals of graphite vary in size within a given seam, but in seams more than a mile away from the granite on the north the average crystal-linity is less coarse, lowering the commercial value. The lenses in the Kropfmuehl-Pfaffenreuth area are the most developed, and are the only ones with deep workings now accessible. The importance of dissolved oxygen as a principal reagent in the refining of liquid steel and the necessity for its removal in the finishing of many grades have stimulated numerous studies of its chemical behavior in the steel bath. From the thermodynaniic viewpoint the essential data are those which determine the free energy of oxygen in solution as a function of temperature and composition of the molten metal. A number of experimental studies have been reported in recent years from which the free energy of oxygen in iron-oxygen melts can be obtained with a fair degree of accuracy for temperatures not too far from the melting point. Certain discrepancies remain, however, which imply considerable uncertainty at higher temperatures; also several sources of error were recognized in the earlier studies. It has been the object of the experimental work reported in this paper to reexamine these sources of uncertainty and to redetermine the equilibrium condition in the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. The reaction and its equilibrium constant are: H2 (g) + Q = H2O (g); K1 _ PH2O / [1] Ph2 X % O Here the underlined symbol Q designates oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. The activity of this dissolved oxygen is known to be directly proportional to its concentrationl,2 and is taken as equal to its weight percent. The closely related reaction of dissolved oxygen with carbon monoxide has also been investigated:3,4,5 co (g) +O = CO?(g); K _ Pco2___ [2] K2= pco X % O [2] The two reactions are related through the wat,er-gas equilibriuni: H2 (g) + CO2 (g) = CO (g) + H2O (g); K2 = PCO X PH2O [3] PH2 X PCO2 and with the aid of the accurately known equilibrium constant of this reaction, it has been shown5 that the experimental data on reactions [1] and 121 are in fairly good, though not exact, agreement. Experimental Method Great care was taken to avoid the principal sources of error of previous studies, namely, gaseous thermal diffusion and temperature measurement. The apparatus was designed to provide controlled preheating of the inlet gases and to permit the addition of an inert gas (argon) in controlled amounts, two measures found to be essential for elimination of thermal diffusion. A known mixture of water vapor and hydrogen was obtained by saturating purified hydrogen with water vapor at controlled temperature. This mixture, with the addition of purified argon, was passed over the surface of a small melt (approximately 70 g) of electrolytic iron in a closed induction furnace. After sufficient time at constant temperature for attainment of equilibrium the melt was cooled and analyzed for oxygen. GAS SYSTEM A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig 1. Commercial hydrogen is led through the safety trap T and the flowmeter F. The catalytic chamber C, held at 450°C, was used to convert any oxygen into water-vapor. A by-pass B with stopcocks was provided so that the hydrogen could be introduced directly from the tank to the furnace when desired. From the catalytic chamber the gas passed through a water bath W, kept at the desired temperature by an auxiliary heating unit, so that the gas was burdened with approximately the proper amount of water vapor before it was introdvced into the saturator S. All connections beyond the catalytic chamber were of all-glass construction. Those connections beyond the water bath were heated to above 80°C to prevent the condensation of water vapor. After the saturator, purified argon was led into the steam-hydrogen line at J, and finally the ternary mixture was introduced into the furnace. THE SATURATOR The saturator unit comprised three glass chambers, as shown in Fig 1, the first two chambers packed with glass beads and partially filed with water and the third empty. Each tower had a glass tube with a stopper attached for the purpose of adjusting the amount of water in it. The unit was immersed in a large oil bath, which was automatically controlled with the help of a thermostat relay to constant temperature, ± 0.05ºC, using thermometers which had been calibrated against a standard platinum resistance thermometer. The performance of the saturator over the range of experimental conditions was checked by weighing the water absorbed from a measured volume of hydrogen; the observed ratio was always within 0.5 pct of theoretical.

The difficulty of exact neutralization by ammonia of the acid solution obtained in the determination of arsenic by the method of fusion with carbonate of soda and nitrate of potassium, led me to try the effect of neutralization by oxide of zinc. I obtained most satisfactory results, and found a great saving of time. The oxide of zinc being added in excess, there is no delicate testing with lit? mils paper and tedious alternate adding of dilute ammonia arid acid until the proper point is reached. The excess of oxide of zinc, too, seems to hold, from the filter, the gelatinous silica and alumina, which are usually precipitated upon neutralization, and thus to render the washing of the precipitated arseniate of silver almost invariably much more rapid. Except the substitution of the neutralization by oxide of zinc for the more tedious method by ammonia, the details of the process are practically the same as those published by Mr. Richard Pearce, of Argo, Colorado (Proceedings of the Colorado Scientific Society, vol. i.), who shows what very accurate results can be obtained by the fusion process. I have made numerous tests of comparison between the two methods of neutralization, and find that those by the oxide of zinc agree almost exactly with the old method. Increasing the quantity of nitric acid, even to considerable excess, to be neutralized by the oxide of zinc did not affect the precipitation of arseniate of silver. The process may be outlined as follows : Take 4 to 1 gramme finely pulverized ore, and mix in a porcelain crucible with eight to ten times its weight of a mixture of equal parts of carbonate of soda and nitrate of potassium (Kerl. Metallurgische Probirkunst gives 4 to 5 nitre to 14 soda). Gradually bring to fusion and keep so, three to five minutes. Cool. Disintegrate in hot water. Filter and wash with hot water. Acidify the filtrate with nitric acid, and boil to expel carbonic acid and nitrous fumes. Cool. Add an excess of an emulsion of oxide of zinc. The bottom of the beaker should have quite a layer of oxide of zinc, after stirring.

Commercial coke is made to-day in the United States chiefly from the Appalachian, the Illinois and the Colorado coal-fields. The measures of the great Appalachian coal-fields furnish by far the largest proportion, only about 1 per cent. coming from those of Illinois and Colorado. This is not due, however, to a corresponding difference in area. The Illinois field covers about 47,000 square miles in Illinois, Southern Indiana and Western Kentucky. The coal is high in both ash and sulphur, and on this account nearly all the attempts which have been made from time to time to coke it have resulted in failure, so far at least as the requirements of ironmasters are concerned. Treating copper ores by heap-leaching and similar hydrometallurgical means is a time-honored practice, which was well known even in the 19th century. Later the method lost ground to better ore dressing processes, particularly selective. flotation. More recently there has been a distinct reversion to leaching techniques, particularly for scavenging operations in old mining stopes, in connection with LPF systems, irrigation of tailings dumps and similar situations. These hydrometallurgical techniques will gain further ground because processing is simple and permits better extraction of copper, particularly from low-grade or partly oxidized ores. In the lixiviation of primary ores at some major operations, copper-bearing liquors may undergo re-circulation in heap-leaching arrangements or the ores may be subjected to systematic percolation treatment. The liquors resulting from this source usually are quite strong (above 10 gpl copper) and copper would normally be reclaimed by electrowinning or cementation. These processes fall out- side the scope of this paper which is concerned with recovery of copper from weak 1iquor.s containing from 0.1 to about 3 gpl copper.

A DISCUSSION of the probable future use of coal for power develop-ment involves the study of several basic factors, such as future demand for power, the quantity and availability of fuels in direct competition with coal, the price of coal, and a closely related factor-the efficiency and cost of fuel utilization. Predictions based on purely statistical analyses of past coal con-sumption have definite limitations. For example, statistics showing the relation between coal utilization and total energy consumption from all sources between the years 1890 to 1930 indicate that during that period, the energy consumption per person in the United States increased five times, while the coal consumption per person increased only twice1, and there has been an actual decrease in per capita coal consumption since 1920. Figures such as these, compiled by authentic agencies, emphasize the need for caution in attempting estimates as to the future use of coal, and, incidentally, would seem to offer little basis for optimism in the coal industry. They also suggest the value of analyzing broadly the part played in the past by the related factors of power consumption, competitive fuels, coal prices and the efficiency of utilization. Proper weight must also be given in such a study to the present status and limitations of power-plant developments, and to the question of what the coal industry itself can do to further its own interests and influence the consumption of its product.

IN the silicothermic reduction of magnesia, burned dolomite is treated with high grade ferrosilicon in an evacuated steel retort at temperatures between 1150° and 1200°C. The following reaction is assumed to occur MgO + CaO + 1/2 Si (Fe) - Mg(g) +- & Ca,SiO, + Fe with the equilibrium constant on the basis of thermodynamic data for the substances involved and assuming unit activity for all solid constituents, Kubaschewski and Evans' calculated the magnesium pressure as a function of temperature logp,, (mmHg) = 15.06-1.61 T- log T- 13,16O/T. Pidgeon and King," who measured the magnesium pressure by means of a flow method, found values about three times the calculated ones. This may be caused by uncertainties in the thermodynamic data, but may also be caused by the formation of other reaction products, such as Ca,SiO,, which is known to be the stable silicate in equilibrium with lime. Whatever the exact reaction may be, it is evident that as long as all other factors are maintained constant the magnesium pressure will vary with the silicon activity, viz: p,, = &,. (p,,) ", where (p,,)" is the magnesium pressure by the reduction with silicon of unit activity. In the present investigation, p,,, was therefore measured for various grades of ferrosilicon and their silicon activities were calculated. The experimental method was similar to that used by Pidgeon and King. Briquettes of burned dolomite and Fe-Si alloys were placed in a 1 in. heat resistant steel tube and were heated to 1200°C. By means of a flow of purified hydrogen, the magnesium vapor was swept into a condenser filled with steel wool. From the amounts of hydrogen used and magnesium condensed the magnesium partial pressure was calculated. First a tube of 28 pct Cr steel, and later a tube of Kanthal D (a ferrous alloy with 22.6 pct Cr, 2 pct Co, and 4.5 pct Al), was used as a heat resistant tube. The latter tube showed the best heat resistance. The dolomite used had the following composition: 43.6 pct MgO, 55.5 pct CaO, 0.2 pct K,O + NalO, 0.2 pct Fe,O,, and 0.3 pct insoluble. The ferrosilicons were prepared from 98 pct Si of technical grade (0.7 pct Al, 0.3 pct Ca, and 1 pct Fe) by melting with various amounts of electrolytic iron of high purity. The alloys thus obtained were analyzed on their iron and silicon contents, which added up to between 99 and 100 pct. The amounts of reactants were chosen so that there would always be an excess of the oxides, and the average decrease in silicon content during the experiments would be about 1 pct. Most of the reaction occurred in the part of the reaction mixture facing the gas flow. The change in the silicon concentration in the part facing the condenser was, therefore, negligible. The only source of uranium ore in Alaska that has been mined commercially is the Ross-Adams deposit, a gently inclined, fusiform orebody in alkali granite in which uranothorite and uranoan thoria-nit? ale the chief ore minerals. In mode of occurrence, apparent genetic association with the granite, and to a lesser extent in mineralogy, this type of deposit is uncommon. The mine is in the southern part of Prince of Wales Island (Fig. 1) at an altitude of about 950 ft on the southeast flank of Bokan Mountain. A steep unpaved road 1 3/4 miles long leads to the dock on the West Arm of Kendrick Bay, which can be reached by boat or seaplane from Ketchikan, some 35 miles to the northeast. The southern section of Prince of Wales Island is covered by dense forests interspersed with swampy tracts of muskeg. Most of the higher peaks support only sparse vegetation, and in areas underlain by alkali granite bare rocky slopes prevail to as low as 800 ft. Numerous fiord-like embayments penetrate this part of the island, and their shorelines provide near-continuous rock exposures. Rainfall is heavy, about 150 in. annually. Throughout the year the climate is relatively mild. History and Production: In May 1955 two members of a Ketchikan prospecting group, Don Ross and his wife, found the deposit while working with an airborne geiger counter. Later they confirmed their discovery by ground investigations. During the summer Climax Molybdenum acquired controlling interest in the property and started exploratory diamond drilling, resuming the drilling on a larger scale in the summer and fall of 1956. Climax began mining in July 1957, shipping the ore by barge and train to the Dawn Mining Co. mill at Ford, Wash. The open pit workings, about 370 ft long, between 25 and 75 ft wide. and 25 ft deep (shown in Fig. 2) were shut down in October 1957. As of September 1958 the pit was still inactive, although a small tonnage of known reserves remains in the southern part. The operators believe the 15,000 tons of uranium ore already produced will average 0.80 pct. GEOLOGY The Ross-Adams mine is within a small stock or boss of alkali granite, about 1000 ft from the southeast margin of the granite (Fig. 3). The area around the boss is underlain chiefly by plutonic rocks of intermediate composition and by metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The oldest rocks in the area probably are the metamorphosed volcanic rocks that are well exposed adjacent to the South Arm of Moira Sound. They are considered by Buddington and Chapin1 to be of Devonian age. These light gray to dark gray rocks mainly represent a layered volcanic sequence. They are commonly porphyritic with plagioclase pheno-crysts in an altered, fine-grained groundmass. The

THE flow characteristics of drilling muds, as described in this paper, and the method given for solving problems relating to the flow of these muds through pipe and accessory equipment, are based on a conception that drilling muds are plastic solids like paints or greases; not liquids. The data presented in this report have been obtained from studies of California muds, chiefly those used in the Kettleman Hills field, by the Producing Department of the Standard Oil Company of California. Although no claim of scientific exactness is made for the formulas and diagrams, since the data upon which they are based, are not. complete even for California muds, the method has proved to be a convenient means for estimating, closely enough for practical purposes, the pressures required to force muds at various rates through pipe systems in which they are handled. Certain approximations have been made to simplify the procedures so that they can be used easily in the field.

RefineRs of lead by the Parkes process have always been solicitous of recovering the zinc used in the desilverization, and justly so, as the loss in zinc constitutes one of the heavy costs in this method of refining. Part of this loss is due to the absorption of zinc by lead, and in the present state of knowledge is not recoverable as metallic zinc. The remainder of the zinc, which finds its way into the precious-metal-bearing crust, is recoverable and naturally engages the operators' most exacting attention. Careful elimination of the impurities in base bullion has enabled the refiner to produce a zinc crust better adapted to retorting, which reflects favorably in the zinc recovery;- and to produce a richer crust, thereby lowering the zineking cost, as the increased efficiency of the zinc results in less of it being in circulation. It is obvious that if the ratio of concentration be increased, a lessening of the amount of crust formed will ensue, throwing less work on the retorts and diminishing the amount of retort metal sent to the cupels, thus making an actual money saving in all these operations. In the effort to obtain a rich crust, the metallurgist has increased the heat to a considerable degree, upon the assumption that at the higher temperature the zinc-dver alloy could be squeezed free from the adhering lead. A further possibility for improvement suggested itself in the freezing-point curve of Prof. H. C. Carpenter, upon zinc and silver. Study of this curve disclosed the existence of a definite chemical compound, Zn3Ag2, with a freezing point of 665" C., a promising compound for practical application. In the experiment undertaken it was endeavored to force this compound into the crust, hoping thereby to obtain a higher concentration than formerly. It was recognized that in bringing a large kettle of lead to such a heat, more fuel would be used, the life of the kettle would perhaps be shorter, and other disadvantages would be experienced. It cannot be said that this whole subject is a new one in respect to its presentation to the Institute, but the minute discussion of it has been looked upon as lying more strictly within the field of study of the societies which have to do chiefly with the construction and management of machinery as such. It must be true that the importance of close limits in steam-economy is as fully recognized among the members of this Institute as by any body of men who have to do with steam-machinery. In all directions, nevertheless, among manufacturers as well as among metallurgists, there may still be found those who do not give the same attention to exact methods in fuel-consumption as devoted to steam, as to other technical uses which, to say the least, are not more important. The study of the most efficient methods of use of fuel in operations which are more strictly metallurgical has been long-continued, and in some directions nearly or quite exhaustive. This has led to a rather close bringing-up, in those particulars, all along the line of technical work, of the establishments (and their managers) which had lagged behind. Yet, in the steam-departments of those works, there are too many reasons for believing that the name may still be legion of those whose methods and results are far from the best. If there be room in any given case to suspect any imperfect working or waste of fuel in the steam-supply, the search for the evil, the clear fixing of its cause, and the application of the remedy are, or certainly ought to be, too obvious in their pressure for attention upon a manager to call for even so scanty a mention of them as can be accorded in this paper. It is natural that men should be incredulous as to imperfections which may be noted as existing in their machinery or methods. Still more are they likely to be altogether disinclined to admit that there may be thus an actual and palpable leakage in the compartment of their money-drawer devoted to coalsupplies. A comprehensive analysis of the crystallographic and metallographic structure of several Al-CuAl, lamellar eutectic grains solidified under equilibrium conditions has been performed. A consistent pattern was discovered which was interpreted in terms of a detailed atomistic model of an interface describable as: Interface II {111} AL 11 {211} <101>Al <120> ? Several arguments are presented to substantiate the theory. It is compared in detail with another interface model characteristic of the Wid-manstatten precipitate of CuAl2 in A1 at low Cu levels. In addition, a concept is proposed to help explain the structure of the compound CuAl2. It has been shown that the eutectic alloy between A1 and CuA1, can be forced to solidify as substantially parallel lamellae throughout a relatively large volume&apos; by appropriately controlling the solidification parameters of growth rate, thermal gradients, and impurity level and by causing solidification to proceed in a unidirectional fashion from one end of an ingot to the other. A typical ingot solidified in this manner shows three distinct zones along the length of the ingot, Fig. 1. At the head end is a region consisting of many different grains, some of which are elongated slightly in the direction of solidification. After a few centimeters of growth, this polygrained region gradually merges into the second zone which consists of a very few elongated coarse grains. The third zone at the tail end is a region of eutectic colonies caused by segregation of impurities. Microscopic examination of transverse and longitudinal sections of the ingots reveals that during the initial stages of growth (zone I) the lamellar structure is frequently highly distorted and twisted but that it straightens out in zone 11. This characteristic pattern suggests that nucleation of a eutectic grain begins randomly at the head end of the ingot, and that some particular orientation relationship between the phases is more favorable from an energy consideration than others for one reason or another, so that some grains grow and others which are less favorably oriented do not. The favorably oriented or "low energy" grains continue to grow until excess solute rejected at the advancing liquid-solid interface destroys the parallel lamellar structure by forming a cellular rather than a substantially planar interface. When this occurs, the parallel lamellae fan out and eutectic colonies are formed because the lamellae grow perpendicular to the local interface. Questions naturally arise as to the crystallographic nature of the "low energy" grains. What do the grains which persist into zone II have in common? Can this explain the stability of such grains during growth? To answer the first question it is necessary to determine the crystallographic orientation of the lamellae of each phase relative to one another. This has been done for Al-CuAl2 eutectic alloys by two different techniques on specimens prepared in different ways.2&apos;3 The results were different from each other and from a third orientation relationship between A1 and CuA1, reported for overaged A1-Cu alloys.4 The three orientation relationships are summarized below to illustrate their similarities and their differences. THIS work was undertaken with the object of collecting plant data on rod milling, making laboratory tests on representative samples of the various ores, and arriving at a basis for comparing the relative efficiencies of different mills operating on widely different materials and under varying conditions. These efficiencies consider only power consumption and do not include the other elements of operating costs. The over-all economic efficiency may be quite different from the consumption efficiencies with which this paper is concerned. It is hoped that these collected data will be of value in indicating the most favorable conditions of rod-mill operation. Operating-plant data on 14 different installations from 11 plants throughout the United States and Canada were collected, and laboratory tests were made on samples of these ores. The plant rod mills were all operated wet, and either in open circuit or with circulating loads so small as to be negligible. Data were obtained on one roll-crushing operation at the Utah Copper Co., for comparison. The rolls were operated wet in closed circuit with 10-mesh vibrating screens, and with a high circulating load averaging about 600 pct. This particular roll operation can be considered as a model of efficiency. The collected plant data are necessarily incomplete in some instances. Each ore was assigned a code number, and the name and location corresponding to the code number are listed in Table I when permitted. [ ] The power data in every instance refer to motor input. Net power was reported by the operator for samples I-39 and I-45, and this was increased by 20 pct to compensate for motor losses and power factor. In my paper on "The Lixiviation of Silver-Ores by the Russell Process at Aspen, Colorado" (page 137 of the present volume), attention was called to the decrease in "chlorination " during the washing of the roasted ore with water, to remove soluble salts, before leaching with hyposulphite and Russell solutions. This decrease in " chlorination," which is due to conversion of the silver chloride to some other form not soluble in hyposulphite solutions, and which, for the sake of brevity, will be termed the "going-back" of chlorination, has been a serious obstacle to the successful operation of several leaching-works, and was at Aspen the only difficulty encountered. I have never seen any explanation of the cause of this failure to extract, in actual practice in the mill, the amount of silver chloride shown by laboratory-leachings to be present in the roasted ore; and the purpose of this paper is to record the conclusions arrived at concerning the cause of the phenomenon, and the data upon which they are based. GENTLEMEN Like every other significant activity in the United States today, the work of the Institute has been affected by and adjusted to the prosecution of war against Germany, .Japan and their satellites. As the elaborate engines and materiel of modern mobile warfare are made, for the most part, of metals and other minerals; and are powered by mineral fuels, the industries -represented by the A.I.M.E. are of primary and vital importance. Of some 29 critical materials officially listed by the War Production Board, 24 are minerals. An alternate for one of the others, rated as a nonmineral, is to be made principally from petroleum. This alludes, of course, to rubber. The procurement of tremendous quantities of such raw materials and the effective processing, fabrication, and utilization of them depend on members of those branches of the engineering profession represented by the A.I.M.E.
