During construction of the intake tunnels for a nuclear power facility in Ohio, evidence of a potential geological discontinuity was discovered. Assuming that the discontinuity might still prevail underneath the site, it was decided to measure the stress profile across the discontinuity. This information would be used to assess future stability on the basis of predicted shear stresses acting along the fracture. Seven intervals were hydraulically fractured to determine the magnitude and orientation of the stress tensor, in order to infer the shear stresses acting along the discontinuity. The formation consists of tightly interbedded shales. This, in combination with the shallow depths, would be expected to lead to horizontal hydraulic fractures -- a situation which generally provides limited information. Careful testing procedures, and meticulous interpretation, allowed the determination of the horizontal stress components as well as the vertical component, via the initiation and/or propagation of multiple fractures. The measured stresses fall within the range of stress magnitudes and orientation determined in other areas of the northeastern and north-central United States and in southern parts of Canada. In addition, a small stress gradient anomaly was recorded at depth. On a different scale, the measured stress regime is also evaluated in light of the regional geological setting.

The Buick mill is located at the site of the old Buick general store, approximately 4 miles south of Bixby, Missouri on route KK. It is a part of the operations in the area now called the "New Lead Belt". The ore body lies at an elevation of 270 feet above sea level, and is fairly flat lying, becoming slightly deeper toward the south. The mineralization is due to the secondary deposition of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, calcite, dolomite and some localized drusy quartz in a country rock of dolomitic limestone. The galena is fairly coarse grained with some large crystaline structure, and some oxidized surfaces. The sphalerite is fine grained- small crystals containing Cd (about 0.7%) and Ag (about 10 oz per ton) in solid solution. The chalcopyrite is fine grained, fine crystals that are sometimes massive in nature. The mine plan is a modified room and pillar system. Broken ore at the mine face will be transported to several different ore passes by rubber tired load-haul-dump units. Ore passes will drop the ore to a rail haulage level some 90 feet below the mining level where bottom dump cars will deliver it to a 42 in. Nordberg gyratory crusher. Two 12 ton capacity skips in balance carry the ore some 1,200 feet to the surface. The hoist is equipped with automatic controls for loading, hoisting and unloading.

THE discussion of this topic at the Open-hearth Conference at Detroit on Nov. 3, 1927, was opened by statements of the general principles involved, made by manufacturers of molds. Because of their general interest they are printed below. WILLIAM HAIL RAMAGE,* Hubbard, Ohio.-I did not come prepared to read a paper, thinking. the most I would be called upon to do would be to make a few, remarks by way of discussion. A number of our friends have pre-viously asked questions. similar to this which really does not permit a direct "yes" or "no" answer. If I may he pardoned for so doing, I believe it advisable to discuss rather what we consider the principal factors which in-fluence mold life. I think possibly a little undue weight has been given to the subject of the analysis of the metal. For the last eight years we have spent a lot of time, effort, and money investigating this very problem from a chemical, physical and microscopic standpoint. We have had the benefit of complete records and history of over 100,000 molds in service at a variety of plants and over long periods of time. Obviously, I cannot be so specific that I should divulge information that is really a trade secret. In our opinion the principal factors influencing mold life are: (1) design of the mold; (2) process of manu-facture, including workmanship; (3) care in the steel plant or what might be termed "the use or abuse" in the steel plant; (4) the analysis of the iron and the physical con-dition of it. Under normal conditions these factors are of importance in the order named, although in specific cases they might be rearranged in any order you choose. For instance, the best mold made can be destroyed in one or two pours by subjecting it to certain conditions which are occasion-ally met in steel plant practice. Obviously, in that case, nothing else matters but that one item. On the other hand, I have seen molds made of such a terrible design that it was a foregone conclusion it would have to be broken after the second pour of the ingot to get it out. In that case, nothing but design mattered. As to the effect of process of manufacture, let me cite a case. Some years ago there were two batches of molds sent to a certain company. They were the same sized molds, used under the same conditions and in the same kind of service. There were, 20 molds in each batch. The second batch sent gave ten times the life of the first batch. It is true that the design was changed a little, but not very much, and it was not. a bad mold to begin with. It is possible that the iron may have been better in the second consignment but not very much. In my opinion, it is con-servative to say that of the 900 per cent improvement in life, 5 per cent was probably due to better iron, 25 per cent to better design and the remaining 870 per cent to process of manufacture and workmanship.

A series of rare earth cobalt compounds of the composition RCoa (r = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Ev, Tm, Lu) has been prepared. The compounds crystallize in space gvoup R3m and are isomorphous with PuNi3. Except for CeCo3 and PrCo, the series shows decreasing- values of a. and co. The relalively small parameters of CeCo, and PrCo, are explained by valencies of cerium or praseodymium which exceed the usual rare earth valency of three. The structure of the compounds is discussed as in-fillings of kagome nets in direct and staggered superposition. In the course of a systematic investigation of rare earth cobalt compounds"2 and their magnetic properties,, a series of alloys corresponding to the formula Rco3 has been prepared. The investigation of the Rco3 series was stimulated by our investigation of the yttrium cobalt system2 as well as by reports in the literature: Smith and Hansen4 reported the structure of YcO3 and Van vucht5 that of GdCo3; ceco3,6 Gdco3,7 and DyCo3 7 have been found to be single-phase during phase diagram studies. It was the purpose of this work to report crystallographic data on the entire Rco3 series and to interpret the structure of these compounds on the basis of general principles as discussed by Frank and Kasper.8 At the time this work was terminated, it was learned that a similar investigation has been carried out independently by Bertaut, Lemaire, and schweizer.9 Except for CeCo3 (ao = 4.952, co = 24.73') and NdCo3 (a0 = 5.067, co = 24.76') data of this work are in satisfactory agreement with their investigation. A laboratory investigation of the behavior of casing subjected to salt loading indicates that it is not economically feasible to design casing for the most severe situations of nonuniform loading. When the annulus is completely filled with cement, casing is subjected to a nearly uniform loading approximately equal to the overburden pressure, and, although the modes of failure may be different, the design of casing to withstand uniform salt pressure can be computed on the same basis as the design of casing to withstand fluid pressure. Failure of casing by nonuniform loading in inadequately cemented washed-out salt sections should be considered a cementing problem rather than a casing design problem. INTRODUCTION Casing failures in salt zones have created an interest in understanding the behavior of casing subjected to salt loading. The designer must know the magnitudes and types of loading to be expected from salt flow and he must be able to calculate the reaction of the casing to these loads. In the laboratory study reported in this paper, short-time experimental measurements of the load required to force steel cylinders into rock salt are used as a basis for computing the salt loading on casing. These results must be considered to be qualitative only since rock salt behaves differently under down-hole and atmospheric conditions and also may vary in strength at different locations. The beneficial effects of (1) cement around casing, (2) a liner cemented inside of casing, and (3) fluid pressure inside of casing in resisting casing failure are considered. ROCK SALT BEHAVIOR UNDER STRESS The effects of such factors as overburden loading, internal fluid pressure, and temperature on the flow of salt around cavities have been studied extensively at The U. of Texas. Brown, et al.1 have concluded that an opening in rock salt can reach a stable equilibrium if the formation stress is less than 3,000 psi and the temperature is less than 300°F. At higher temperatures and pressures an opening in salt can close completely. These results indicate that calculations based upon elastic and plastic equilibrium for an open hole in salt should be applied only at depths less than 3,000 ft. In most oil wells the tem- perature will be less than 300F in the salt sections, therefore no appreciable temperature effects are anticipated. Serata and Gloyna2 have reported an investigation of the structural stability of salt. .They assume that the major principal stress is due to the overburden. Other stresses can be superimposed if additional lateral pressures are known to be acting in a particular region. In the present analysis an isotropic state of stress is assumed to exist in the salt before the hole is drilled, since salt regions are generally at rest. This assumption is partially verified from formation breakdown pressure data taken during squeeze-cementing operations in salt. Experimental measurements of the elastic properties of rock salt indicate a value of 150,000 psi for Young's modulus and a value of approximately 0.5 for Poisson's ratio. A value of % for Poison's ratio with finite Young's modulus would indicate that the material was incompressible. Values ranging from 2,300 to 5,000 psi have been reporteda for the unconfined compressive strength of salt. These variations may be due to differences in the properties of the salt from different locations or at least partially to differences in testing techniques. Salt is very ductile, even under relatively low confining pressures. For example, in triaxial tests reported by Handin3 strains in excess of 20 to 30 per cent were obtained without fracture. When casing is cemented in a hole through a salt section, the casing must withstand a load from the formation if plastic flow of the salt is prevented. To determine the forces which salt can impose on casing, circular steel rods were forced into Hockley rocksalt with the longitudinal axis of the rods parallel to the surface of the salt. The force required to embed rods 0.2 to I in. in diameter and 1/2 to 1 in. long to a depth equal to the radius of the rods was found to be F/DL =28,700 psi (± 3,700 psi) , .... (1) where D is the diameter, and L is the length of the rod. CASING STRESSES Since an open borehole through salt at depths greater than 3,000 ft will tend to close, cemented casing which prevents closure of the hole will be subjected to a pressure approximately equal to the horizontal formation stress after a sufficiently long time. As a first approximation the horizontal stress can be assumed to be equal to the overburden pressure. This is in agreement with the suggestion by Texter4 that an adequate cement job can prevent plastic flow of salt and result in a pressure on the casing approximately equal to the overburden pressure. Some simple models of solutions are described; these include the regular solution, the subregular solution, and the quasichemical model. The assunzption underlying these models, the physical signzficance thereof, and the experimental manifestations are discussed. Examples are presented from the fields of liquid and solid metallic solutions, liquid slags, mattes, liquid and solid ionic solutions, and mixed carbides to show under what conditions and for which systems these solution models are fair descriptions. The deviations of real solutions from the models are of theoretical interest. Some such deviations, both for dilute and for concentrated solutions, arc pointed out and their Physical sigtzzficance discussed. DURING the past half century there has been a gradual accumulation of thermodynamic data for systems of interest to the metallurgist. There remain many gaps in the data, however, and the metallurgist must often face the problem of estimation of thermodynamic quantities where measured values do not exist. One might hope that the experimental progress would be matched by theoretical advances which would make such estimations possible with a high degree of confidence. However, theoretical progress has been disappointingly slow even for the simplest kinds of solutions, and since the multicomponent systems in which the metallurgist is interested are very complex, one cannot expect theory to be of much help to the metallurgist. In this situation, therefore, it seems worthwhile to examine some simple models of solutions from two points of view: firstly, to see if such crude models represent the thermodynamic facts in as many types of solutions as possible sufficiently well for the needs of the metallurgist, and secondly to see what the deviations from such models show to be important for consideration by theorists. BOND ENERGY MODELS OF SOLUTIONS The simple models that we will examine from these points of view may be termed statistical models, in that they are concerned with the thermodynamic consequences of some simple assumptions about the energy of an assembly of atoms, molecules, or ions, and do not inquire into the physical basis of the interaction. The underlying assumption of these models is that the energy of an assembly of molecules (by which we include also atoms or ions) is given by the sum over all interaction energies of molecules taken two at a time; we will discuss only those models in which the pairwise interactions are restricted to those between nearest neighbors. Thus, in a pure substance of bond energy EAA, the internal energy (with respect to some specific reference state) will be expressed as NAA EAA where NAA is the number of nearest-neighbor pairs. A solution of molecules A and B will be characterized by NAA EAA + NBB EBB + NAB EAB where the Eij represent the bond energies of the nearest-neighbor i-j pairs. If one assumes that the EAA and EBB are the same in the pure components as in the solution, and that the coordination numbers in the two pure substances and in the solution are the same, then the energy of the solution with respect to the pure components (i.e., the energy of solution) is a function of the following linear combination of the bond energies: EAB - 1/2(EAA +EBB) = w. The thermodynamically ideal solution is defined as one in which the activity of each component is equal to the mole fraction of that component at all concentrations and all temperatures. Reynolds Jamaica Mines, Ltd., has received a $3+ million loan from ECA for the development of what are termed the largest bauxite deposits in the world in Jamaica, B.W.I. This amount is in addition to $11 million already provided. The new agreement calls for delivery of 750,000 tons a year beginning in early 1952. Inco has announced a new alloy containing 35 pet Ni which can be used for many purposes served by the old alloys which ran up to 70 pet Ni. The new alloy "Incoloy" is 35 pet Ni, 20 pet Cr, and the balance iron.

FRENCH steel makers are ready to support the Schuman plan. Pierre Ricard, vice-president of the French Steel Chamber syndicate, announced the industry's readiness to cooperate with the plan, which is aimed toward giving Europe an integrated steel industry. Steel men appear to have decided in favor of the plan because of its promise to unify the continent. Behind approval is the emphasis placed by French steel plant operators on continuation of the Franco Saar economic union. The French have an, abiding fear of German steel production potential. France is currently producing at an annual rate of 11 million tons, while Western Germany is producing 15.5 million tons of steel. The Saar output is placed at 3 million tons. French industrialists feel that as long as the marriage of French and Saar steel production continues, France can compete reasonably well with Germany. If Saar production should suddenly become part of the Western Germany total, it could result in an unequal competitive situation, giving Germany a production level of 18.5 million tons of steel annually, or 60 pct more than France.

Butte mining district contains extensive manganese vein deposits forming a peripheral zone. Oxidation in the veins studied usually extends to a depth of about 75 ft. Secondary minerals formed by oxidation were found to be ramsdellite—always accompanied by intermixed pyrolusite—and cryptomelane. Enrichment of the gossan is accomplished by reduction of weight upon oxidation; theoretical enrichment is 32.2 pct. Additional enrichment is caused by leaching of soluble minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium carbonates. BUTTE mining district contains extensive manganese vein deposits in the outer zone, surrounding the copper and zinc deposits and corresponding to the well known silver zone. This article describes the mineralogy of the manganese veins, the oxidation and enrichment processes, and the use of this information in prospecting. Information was derived from a study of the Emma, Star West, Tzarena, and Norwich mines, selected as representative of the district. Vein exposures at these mines were mapped, studied, and sampled on the outcrops and throughout the oxidized zone. Specimens were cut and polished for minera-graphic examination, identification, and textural studies. Knowledge of the manganese oxide minerals is scanty, previous information having been rendered obsolete by publication of the first correctly identified list of manganese oxide minerals by Fleischer and Richmond in 1943. Positive identification of the manganese oxides is possible only by X-ray analysis. Identifications for this study were made by the author with a Phillip's Diffractometer at the Montana School of Mines and confirmed by Lester Zeihen of The Anaconda Co., using a Norelco X-ray camera. It was necessiary to re-evaluate some X-ray data, as published patterns of several manganese oxides proved to be of mixtures, mostly showing pyrolusite as a contaminant. Perhaps the most useful information on oxidation and enrichment of manganese is presented in recent books by Goldschmidt1 and Rankama and Sahama.2 While their hypotheses are not conclusively proved, all laboratory and field evidence has served to substantiate them. This information was very useful in this study. Mineralogy: The primary minerals of the manganese veins are chiefly rhodochrosite and quartz. Rhodonite is abundant in the northern part of the district and in places has been found to comprise over a third of the vein matter. A variable but generally small amount of sulfides may be present, principally pyrite and silver minerals. Sphalerite is progressively more abundant near the zinc zone. Rhodochrosite is believed to form complete iso-morphous series with siderite, ankerite, and calcite. Some variation into these compositions is common, and the intermediate forms are termed manganosid-erite, manganankerite, and rnanganocalcite. Much of the rhodochrosite is remarkably pure. Other manganese minerals in the district include huebner-ite, alabandite, and helvite. Ramsdellite (MnO2, orthorhnmbic) is the principal manganese oxide mineral, comprising perhaps two-thirds of the total oxides. It is dull to iron black, and generally massive or platy in structure. A prominent platy cleavage is the only distinguishing megascopic characteristic. Pyrolusite (MnO2, tetragonal) is next most abundant to ramsdellite, with which it is usually intimately mixed. The luster is often brighter or more metallic than in ramsdellite, and needle-like crystals are diagnostic. Pyrolusite is common in small cavities formed by oxidation of pyrite grains. It is relatively abundant in zones of high limonite content. Cryptomelane (KMnO16 tetragonal ?) is rare in the outcrop, but becomes more abundant with depth. At depths of several hundred feet it is the principal oxide. Although its appearance varies, a blue-black flinty luster and blocky to conchoidal fracture are most common. A potassium flame test will identify this mineral. Hardness of all three oxides varies from 2 to 6. The three are quite commonly intermixed, and their textures can vary greatly. The commonest textures are massive or colloform, representative of colloidal deposition, or vuggy and boxwork textures, formed by partial leaching and oxidation in place. A box-work of either ramsdellite or chalcedony is formed after rhodochrosite rhombs and is indicative of ore shoots in this district. Some replacement of both quartz and the granitic wallrock by ramsdellite has been noted, but most of the oxide was deposited as a fissure filling by fine particles. No trace of manganite, hausmannite, braunite, or manganosite was found. No minerals of the psilome-lane group were detected besides cryptomelane. Amorphous MnO, was found at several spots. A specimen of oxide coated with yellow barite crystals was amorphous and not psilomelane (BaMn9O18. 2H2O). Voids formed by the leaching of sphalerite were coated with cryptomelane, not hetaerolite (ZnMn2O4) as might be expected. IN accordance with the custom of this society, we are gathered here, as we have every year since 1924, to honor the memory of the eminent American metallurgist and teacher, Professor Henry Marion Howe. Unlike many of the distinguished metallurgists who have preceded me as a Howe lecturer, I cannot bring to you reminiscences of his personality, for it was not my privilege to be associated with Professor Howe, or to be directly one of his students. Yet, Professor Howe and Professor Albert Sauveur, through the medium of their books, were my first teachers of metallography, as they have been of almost all American metallurgists of my generation. As a teacher, and for many years the acknowledged leader of American metallurgists, he exercised a profound influence in the growth of our science and was held in honor by the men of science of his time. I can speak no words of technical appreciation that will add luster to his fame, for by his prophetic vision, his teachings, and his researches he stands among the immortals in the memory of all metallurgists. In 1926, the third Howe Memorial Lecture was presented by Professor William Campbell' of Columbia University, who entitled it "Twenty-Five Years of Metallography." He took as a starting date for his chronology the turn of the century, which coincided with his arrival from England to work in association with Howe at the Columbia School of Mines. In that informative lecture Professor Campbell enumerated the important advances in metallography achieved during the first quarter of the century, and, it now appears, may have established the custom of reviewing such progress every twenty-five years. The scope of Professor Campbell's lecture was as broad as his metallurgical knowledge, for it embraced a wide portion of the field of metallography, both ferrous and nonferrous. Twenty-five years later, the Howe Memorial Lecture Committee saw fit to assign to me the honor of writing a lecture that would commemorate the work of Henry Marion Howe and would at the same time constitute the 25th anniversary of the lecture by Professor Campbell. The Committee suggested that this lecture might properly be called "Twenty-Five More Years of Metallography," a suggestion that I have adopted. I must confess, however, that I have not followed the precedent established by Campbell and have narrowed the scope of this lecture to an appraisal of those achievements which in my opinion have contributed most to the progress of microscopical metallography during the past twenty-five years. Progress in Metallography The metallographic methods most widely used today, with the exception of the electron microscope, were firmly established more than twenty-five years ago. In general, our specimens were prepared for microscopic examination in those days in much the same manner as they are today. It is true that new details of technique have been introduced from time to time, and that superior equipment is available today, but on the whole, these improvements have been in the nature of refinements, often a matter of personal preference, and none can be considered essential to the attainment of the ultimate goal of the art and science of metallography, which is to reveal the structure of metallic specimens with unequivocal clarity so that they may be interpreted correctly. Mechanical metallographic polishing, which was the only method available in 1926, is still universally practiced and still consists of abrading the metallic specimen with a series of abrasives of increasing fineness until a specular surface is attained. We have now the alternative method of electropolishing, but it is not widely used because, except in a few special cases, its results are inferior to those of competent mechanical polishing. Likewise, most of the etching reagents preferred today were in common use more than twenty-five years ago and were applied in the same manner as they are today. Valuable improvements have been made in the optical and mechanical performance of metallurgical microscopes, but there was no dearth in those days of excellent instruments equipped with achromatic and apochromatic objectives capable of yielding micrographs comparable in quality with the best that we can make today. In fact, it would be a difficult task for any metallographer today to make optical micrographs at magnifications in excess of 3000 diameters that would surpass those made by Lucas more than twenty-five years ago. One of these is shown in Fig. 1. Yet, it is unquestionable that on the whole, the micrographs appearing in the metallurgical literature today are vastly superior to those

Several attempts have been made to account for the fact that grains in a fully recrystallized metal will coarsen on annealmg. Two fundamentally different hypotheses have been advanced, with several variations of each. One school considers that the cause of grain growth is the surface energy of the grain boundary. The theory of Jeffriesl that grain size and grain size contrast control growth is an example. The second school considers the primary cause to be a difference in the lattice energy on either side of the grain boundary. The more perfect grains are considered to grow at the expense of their less perfect neighbors, with a decrease in free energy, and a consequent increase in the stability of the system. Burgers2 presents the case for the strain or lattice imperfection theory of grain growth quite completely. The latter theory is attractive, since there is no doubt that differences in lattice energy or lattice perfection can cause grain boundary migration. A recrystallization nucleus grows for this reason as was beautifully demonstrated by van Arkel and Ploos van Amstel.³ Although it is generally stated that grain growth does not precede recrystallization, several workers4-5 have shown that small strains may induce a single crystal in an aggregate to grow, or at least may cause some grain boundary migration. The origin and nature of the imperfections that are considered to be responsible for normal grain growth have never been clearly described, but it is generally agreed that they are a consequence of the difficulty of atomic reorientation in the solid state, and that they do not seriously differ from the type of imperfection that can be introduced by mechanical deformation. An object of the present work was to determine whether the introduction of mechanical deformation would cause grain growth in a specimen which would not otherwise show it under the conditions used. It was also planned to determine the effect of such deformation on the rate of growth in a specimen which would show growth in the unstrained condition. Recently Maddigan and Blank6 have indicated that slightly strained specimens of alpha brass can undergo considerable growth prior to recrystallization if annealed at low temperatures. French7 has reported that at deformations less than 17 pet it is very difficult to detect the beginning of recrystallization in the same material. It was therefore planned to broaden this work to include a complete study of the microscopic behavior of alpha brass under condition~ of temperature, time, grain size and deformation such that recrystallization would not occur or would occur to only a Small extent. THE complete statistics of zinc-ore production in the United States for 1916 are not yet available. The following figures are, therefore, only approximate. The total production of concentrates for this year, including New Jersey and Tennessee, amounts to 1,280,000 tons. Of this tonnage, five mines produced approximately 536,000 tons, or about 42 per cent. The remaining concentrates came mainly from the "Valley States," Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The 1,280,000 tons of concentrates represent about 25,000,000 tons of crude or run-of-mine ore. Of the five mines producing the 42 per cent., the dimensions of three are approximately 25 by 1,500 by 2,000 ft. (7.6 by 457 by 610, m.) or more. Tour of the five mines are undoubtedly veins in the common acceptance of the term. They are located in great vein systems. The mines of "Valley States" have not, so far, been classed as veins; simply as "secondary deposits." The origin of these secondary deposits has been a warmly debated subject. Many geologists contend that they are the results of leaching from overlying and from adjacent rocks carrying but traces of zinc, these traces leached out and deposited in favorable loci. If this theory is correct, deposition is strictly limited to shallow depths. No volume of ore comparable to that of "true fissure veins" is to be expected. Just what this means to the future of zinc mining in these States is here indicated. The total zinc areas of these States amounts to about 9,124- sq. miles (23,631 sq. km.).- Assuming that 10 per cent. of this total will be more or less productive, there are 912 sq. miles (2,362 sq, km.) of "mineral? ground. The average depth of the operated mines is something like 100 ft. or less. In Bulletin 606, U. S. Geological Survey (1915), p. 202, Siebenthal makes the following statement: "The writer is informed by William Waugh, one of the drillers of the Stone City well, that cuttings from other wells which he drilled in the vicinity of Pittsburgh, Kan., have shown galena and sphalerite taken from a depth of 591 ft. (180.14 m.) and that the showing of ore at some places would be considered good enough to justify the sinking of a shaft had it been found in the Joplin district and at shallower depths." From 1917 to 1926 mining at the Climax Molybdenum Co. property was confined to the Leal and White levels at elevations of 12,145 and 11,935 ft respectively and to surface outcrops above the Leal level. At present the production is coming from the Phillipson and Storke levels at elevations of 11,465 and 11,168 ft. Until 1926 when B. S. Butler recognized the relationship existing between the orebody and a central core of fine-grained hydrothermal quartz, the orebody was believed to be tabular in form. The orebody lies within the pre-Cambrian granites and schists and another rock type designated as the Climax porphyry and surrounds a highly silicious core, the mineable portion of which varies in thickness from 250 to 400 ft.

IN the oil-refining industry, steel comprises by far the greatest proportion of the materials used in construction work, but with an enormous number of alloy steels and nonferrous alloys available, and a greater knowledge of their properties and corrosion resistance, a substitution first in the "hot spots" and then in locations of moderately severe corrosive conditions will be made as the greater expense can be justified. In new construction work, advantage is taken of the experience already gained and appropriate materials used, whether for high temperatures and pressures demanding additional strength or for corrosive conditions. The locations, however, where equipment in operation constantly requires replacement will soon become evident, as will the necessity for replacement in more resistant materials, if considerable down-time is to be avoided. In what direction and how far to go in the matter of alloys then becomes a question of the highest importance. Obviously, any replacement with more costly material must be justified economically by the promise of longer life, thereby saving both material and installation costs besides the reduction of loss of production. Where the equipment is overcapacity and a regular schedule of cleaning periods is in force, the last item frequently must be ruled out and justification made on the basis of the first two only. Installation of material that will outlast the remainder of the equipment and have no recovery value must also be avoided; this is particularly important in temporary construction or in old equipment that will soon become obsolete. TEST METHODS Either one Of two methods or a combination of both, in the absence of reliable data in similar services, may be adopted to determine to what extent replacement with other, and perhaps more expensive, materials is justified. A unit may be constructed incorporating different metals or alloys so that comparative service may be obtained under the same service conditions; this has been applied in many instances, such as condenser and tank construction, but the opportunities for inspection may be few and

One of the main functions of the United States Bureau of Mines is to obtain and disseminate information that will promote safety in and around mines, and the health and safety of employees engaged in mining. Serious health and safety conditions arising out of contamination of air in metal mines by dust, fumes from explosives and fires, and absorption of oxygen by timber and other causes, led the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the United States Public Health Service in the study of dust occurrence and ventilation in metal mines in various parts of the country. A. J. Lanza, of the U. S. Public Health Service, and Edwin Higgins, mining engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1915, made a detailed study in the mines around Joplin, Mo.; their reports1 are now available. In 1916, 1917, and 1918, a similar study was made in the Butte, Mont., region by Doctor Lanza and D. Harrington, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines; the reports of this investigation will be available soon. In 1919, the study was continued in some of the Arizona mines by D. Harrington, of the Bureau of Mines, and G. E. McElroy and R. A. Koronski, of the U. S. Public Health Service, the underground work being completed in June, 1920; these reports are now being prepared for publication. In the spring of 1920, the scope of the work was extended, with D. Harrington in charge as supervising mining engineer, and short studies were made in the mines of the Coeur d' Alenes in Idaho and around Oatman, Ariz. It is hoped soon to extend the work into mines of California, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, and Minnesota, and ultimately to other states should the mining companies be willing to coöperate.
