The copper-silver system presents several points of special interest in the study of segregate structures. The system is simple eutectic, with limited solid solutions terminal with the pure component metals. The extent of solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature for both the copper-rich and the silver-rich alloys, thus offering a possibility for the formation of Widmanstätten figures and also a possibility for aging after quenching. In contrast to the structures studied previously the structures in this system are unique in their origin, for one terminal solid solution will precipitate the other, and vice versa. In most of the other systems for which crystallographic data on the precipitation (or transformation) process arc available, either intermetallic compounds or intermediate phases partake in the decomposition process; the absence of such phases thus distinguishes this system. The lattice structures of the two solid solutions are identical in type, differing in lattice spacing by approximately 10 per cent; because of this it seems difficult if not impossible to predict on the basis of present theory either the outward form of the precipitate or the lattice orientation relationships between matrix and precipitate. The eutectic temperature in the copper-silver system' is 779" C. At this temperature copper dissolves 4.3 atomic per cent (7.0 weight per cent) of silver in solid solution; this solid solubility decreases to zero at room temperature.² Silver at the eutectic temperature rctains 14.0

When the United States Government started buying gold at varying prices per ounce, set by the President and the Treasury Department, the gold miner found himself facing new conditions, as gold became a commodity with a fluctuating market price. While it was self-evident that the miner was to receive more for his gold than the old established price of $20.67 per ounce, there was an element of uncertainty, which made it difficult, and perhaps dangerous, to decide to invest his time and money to produce gold, especially if the profit would represent only the difference between $20.67 an ounce and the new price as set from day to day by the Government. When, however, on Jan. 30, 1934, the United States went off the gold standard, the price of newly mined gold being rather definitely set at $35 per ounce, with some assurance that the price would be maintained at or near this figure for a long time to come, the gold miner was justified in revaluing his property on the basis of the new price, and the prospector was offered inducement to spend his time and energies hunting for new mines, or going back to old locations previously abandoned as of doubtful value. It is interesting to see what this new price means to the producer of newly mined gold, and how much of the increase is passed on to the producer. It will be found that, as with the base metals, the nearer he can get to producing a finished product himself the greater his reward will be; the net returns for bullion being necessarily higher than for the same amount of gold shipped in concentrates to the smelter. Bullion can be shipped to the United States mints or Government assay offices under the following terms and conditions. An affidavit must accompany the shipment, stating, among other things: 1. The source of the gold; whether ore, tailings or placer. 2. The tons of ore, tailings or cubic yards of gravel from which the shipment was recovered.

A method for determining average reservoir pressure is presented, which is simpler to apply than that devised by Matthews. Brons and Hazebroek. For bounded reservoirs, identical results are obtained if stabilized-flow conditions prevail. The present method yields inferior results in the transient state. The method can, with a slight modification, also be used for water-drive reservoirs. INTRODUCTION In the method proposed by Matthews, Brons and Haze-broek' for determining average reservoir pressure in a multi-well reservoir, the cumulative production (the production time of each well) enters twice: once when the buildup is plotted against In (t + t)/At to arrive at p*, and a second time when the correction, p*-p is determined with one of the several formulas for differently shaped drainage areas. Once a steady state has been attained, however, the previous production history should be immaterial. The same pressure distribution could have been arrived at after different cumulative productions of the individual wells. In principle, therefore, it should be possible to determine average pressures without referring to cumulative productions. In the following paragraphs an expression is presented for the difference between the pressure in a producing well and the average pressure of its drainage area. Then the build-up time needed to overcome this difference is indicated. The kinetics of sulfation of single crystals of lead sulfide to lead sulfate have been studied between 969" and 1073°K in gas atmospheres of known composition using a thermobalance technique. The data are described by an equation derived on the basis that diffusion outward through the Product layer is the major controlling step. The rate of sulfation is linearly related to the logarithm of the sulfur trioxide partial DESPITE its industrial significance the oxidation of lead sulfide has received limited attention. The oxidation reactions have been studied using beds, briquettes, single crystals, or thin films of lead sulfide. Lead oxide and lead sulfate (PbSO,) were formed when Mclntoshl and Gardner2 roasted beds of galena pressure and the temperature coefficient of reaction is 40 ± 5 kcal per g mole. Gold marker experiments show that the sulfate layer grows by outward movement of ions through the sulfate layer. Initially the PbSO, adheres to the PbS but later forms an irnpewious spheroidal envelope; PbS vaporizes and pb2' ions diffuse through the envelope to react at the external surface. in air at temperatures up to 800°C. In a more extensive investigation, Tchizhykov3 obtained Pb, PbO, and PbS04 in accordance with Eqs. [1] to [4], when a bed of -200 mesh galena was oxidized in O2-N2 mixtures at 700° to 900°C.

THIS paper gives a brief account of the geologic and production problems encountered in the Grass Creek oil field, the methods used in their solution, and the beneficial results obtained from the work. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance received from J. H. Pearson and Miss Ninettta A. Davis in the collection of the data and the preparation of the cross-sections. Permission for its publication was given by the officials of the Midwest Refining Co. and the Ohio Oil Co. The Grass Creek oil field is located in Ts. 98-99 W., R. 46 N., Hot Springs County, Wyo. The productive area includes about 2 1/2 mi. (4 km.) on the apex of a great anticlinal fold occupying more than 150 sq. mi. Fig. 1 shows the structural contours of the field. Oil was dicovered in the field in June, 1914; development proceeded rapidly and production rose to a maximum in 1918. The marketed production has been approximately as follows: BARRELS BARRELS 1915 94,073.5 1918 2,946,774.27 1916 1,404,183.97 1919 2,000,584.84 1917 2,780,697.51 1920 1,485,080.94 About 350 wells, 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) deep have been drilled to reach the upper oil sands; two companies, the Ohio Oil Co. and the Midwest Refining Co., operate the entire field.

The vapor pressure of indium has been measured by the torque-effusion technique, as a function of temperature between 1102o and 1422oK. For liquid indium, the vapor pressure (in atmospheres) can be represented by the equation -R In P = 5.782 x104/T - 25.29from 1000o to 1422oK. Extrapolation yields a calculated normal boiling point of 2329°K and a heat of vaporization at 298 oK of 58.09 kcal per mole by the third-law method and of 58.39 kcal per mole by the second-law method. Calculations indicate that the free-energy functions of Hultgren are to be preferred to those of Guruich. BECAUSE of the potential uses of liquid metals, it is important that convenient experimental methods be developed which will lead to a sufficient body of thermodynamic data so that reasonable estimates of properties of liquid metals can be made. Indium is particularly well-suited to investigation, since it remains liquid over a long temperature interval, it alloys readily, suitable containers for it are easily procured, and relatively few investigations of its thermodynamic properties in the region above 1000°K have been made. PREVIOUS RESEARCH The first determination of the vapor pressure of indium was made by Anderson,' using the Knudsen method and silica-lines stainless-steel cells. Kohlmeyer and spandau2 determined the normal boiling point, and a mass-spectroscopic investigation has been made by Lyubimov and Lyubitov.3 (Unfortunately, only an equation representing the data of the latter investigators has been available to us.) Hultgren et al.4 and Gurvich5 have published discordant tables of the free-energy functions for indium. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The torsion-effusion principle has been described amply in the literature.8,7 With this method, one observes the angular deflection induced by effusion of vapor from a multihole effusion cell which is suspended from a filament producing a small rotational restoring force. The pressure within the effusion cell can be computed from the relation ziaifiai where k is the torsion constant of the filament, 6 is the observed angular deflection, and ai, fi, and qi are the area, force factor, and moment arm of the ith effusion orifice. The force factor f is analogous to the Clausing factor,' and corrects for the reduction in effusive force attributable to the finite geometry of the effusion orifice. Schultz and Searcy' have tabulated the force factors for various tube geometries. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The physical arrangement employed in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The furnace elements are six Globar heat rods with 15-in. hot zones. Temperature is maintained to * 1°K by a Beck mechanism driving two 26-amp Powerstats in parallel. A Pt (Pt, Rh 10 pct) thermocouple serves as the sensing element. Four inner tubes act as vibration isolators; the air pressure required for maximum isolation was determined empirically, and is maintained by a solenoid valve. The tungsten fiber, 9 by 0.002 in., is joined to an 0.008-in. tungsten wire or graphite rod via a machined lightweight chuck.

Studies on hand-picked samples of chrysocolla from Arizona showed that heating in an inert atmosphere enhances greatly copper extraction by ammoniacal-ammonium carbonate solutions. Heating in hydrogen improves the extraction of copper even further and maximum extraction by ammoniacal-ammonium carbonate and by sodium cyanide solutions is achieved for samples heated at 350°C. Heating in SO2 atmosphere results in the simultaneous formation of CuSO4 and Cu2O; maximum reaction rate is also achieved at 350°C. At temperatures higher than 350°C, CuCO4 starts to decompose. Chrysocolla heated above 600°C either in argon, H2, or SO2, is rendered less amenable to leaching, supposedly due to the formation of insoluble copper silicates.

This paper reviews the subject of gasoline margins, discusses some of the more current marketing problems, and gives some consideration to the main urges to marketing expansion, or overexpansion, in the oil industry. Margins In an earlier paper1, some comparisons were shown for the years 1929, 1930 and 1931, of the margin between the refinery cost of gasoline in Oklahoma, the market price in Oklahoma, and the average retail price in 50 representative cities of the United States. These figures indicated a small margin for the refiner in 1929 between his gasoline cost and the wholesale price, which, however, had turned into a loss by 1931. The margin between either refinery costs or wholesale prices and the retail price in the 50 cities showed a continuous decline during the three years. We have now worked out these figures on a similar basis for a longer period—from 1928 through 1936. The Jersey mine, owned by Canadian Exploration Ltd., has produced nearly five million tons of lead- zinc ore from a flat-lying replacement orebody. A room and pillar method of trackless mining has been used, leaving a checkerboard pattern of 40-ft wide panels, with the hanging wall supported by pillars from 20 to 40 ft in diameter. About 35% of the remaining ore reserve is tied up in pillars. The pillars in the north end of the mine are smaller than the pillars in the south end and each contains about 500 to 1000 tons of ore. The larger pillars in the south end contain from 2000 to 8000 tons of ore each. The pillars vary from 15 to 60 ft high, depending on the thickness of the orebody at any given point. They are irregularly shaped, and from 20 to 40 ft in diameter.

CARLTON mill in the Cripple Creek district, 45 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colo., has been in operation for approximately three years, treating the custom sulpho-telluride ores formerly handled by the Golden Cycle mill in Colorado Springs. At the new mill the pyrite-telluride flotation concentrates have been roasted, prior to cyanidation, in a Dorrco FluoSolids reactor, which has proved capable of yielding calcine readily amenable to cyanidation. Incoming ores are crushed at Carlton to 5/8 in. and sampled in 30 to 75-ton lots before the individual lots are mixed in the fine ore bin. The composite ore then goes to the grinding circuit. Classifier overflow from the grinding circuit is treated by flotation to produce a concentrate containing approximately 85 pct of the values in 5 pct of the weight. The flotation concentrate goes to the FluoSolids reactor prior to cyanidation. Cyanide solution values are recovered by zinc dust precipitation. Flotation tailings are thickened and cyanided, the values from this part of the circuit being recovered from solution by activated carbon.

Some fifty years ago, iron-ore was discovered near the town of Sheldon, Franklin County, Vermont, in a vein out-cropping on a knoll near Black Creek, which empties into the Missisquoi River a couple of miles away. A short time after this discovery, the owners, Mr. TV. 0. Gadcomb and Hon. Lawrence Brainerd, both of St. Albans, commenced mining (mostly by open cut), and also erected a Catalan forge, from which iron blooms were produced, most of which were worked into bar-iron and used in the neighborhood of the forge, while some were shipped by Lake Champlain to Troy, Albany and New York. But by reason of the lack of any railroad connections, and an insufficient demand for the blooms, this forge was subsequently abandoned, and the material used in its construction removed to other places. Mr. Keith, of Sheldon, used for many years a mixture of this ore with bog-ore from Swanton, in a charcoal blast-furnace, the product of which he consumed partly in his own foundry, shipping, however, a considerable amount to Troy and New York. Accurate data as to this enterprise are not at hand. The same vein has since been traced for some 20 miles, and some prospecting has been done 011 its outcrops at Berkshire, Enosburg and a few miles east of St. Albans; but the vein being small, only a few car-loads of ore were taken out from these places. The commencement of the St. Albans Iron and Steel Works in 1872, and the erection in 1877 of a ten-ton Siemens open-hearth furnace for the manufacture of steel rails, opened a new use for this ore. Five water-driver fields, for which pressure predictions had been made within a few years after discovery, were re-studied when four to five years of additional pressure and production data became available. It was fortnd that forecasts of the pressure in water-dri~fe reservoirs may be subject to considerable unccrtainty. Predictions car be erroneous when there is insufficient presswe history to define the cllaracteristics of the aquifer, and when there are errors in the pressure, production or geologic data. INTRODUCTION The efficient operation of an oil or gas reservoir requires that the important characteristics of the reservoir be determined soon after its discovery. It is especially desirable to evaluate the pressure-production relationship quickly, for this relationship provides a basis for deducing the type of production mechanism that is operative, and for making pressure predictions. The pressure predictions, in turn, provide a basis for calculating efficient rates of production, determining whether water or gas should be injected, etc. The importance of pressure prediction is such that forecasts should be made as accurate as possible, and the limits of error well defined. Historically, pressure forecasts for some fields have proved very accurate, while for others the forecasts were so erroneous that they resulted in the adoption of wrong, or at best, unnecessary production practices. Pressure predictions made for water-drive fields are especially subject to error. Accurate forecasting for these fields requires that much be known not only about the reservoir proper but about the adjacent water-filled rock as well. The water-containing rock, or aquifer, may extend for many miles, and often there is only meager data regarding its thickness, permeability and porosity. Much of the information must be inferred from the previous pressure behavior of the reservoir. A brief pressure history may provide little information about the characteristics of the aquifer. Hence, pressure predictions made early in the life of water-drive fields can be incorrect. The work described in this paper was done to determine the degree of reliability which can be expected of pressure predictions made within a few years after water-drive fields are discovered. Five fields, for which the original pressure predictions had been based on less than seven years' history, were re-examined with the aid of four to five years of additional pressure data. Where the predictions were inaccurate, the reasons for failure were ascertained. The studies were accomplished by use of the electric reservoir analyzer.' The analyzer was first adjusted to repeat the original pressure-production match using the same values for the various parameters as were used in the original study. Then, the actual production rates experienced during the time elapsed since the initial study were set into the analyzer, and the pressure behavior indicated by the machine for this period was compared with that which actually OCcurred. Where the pressure profile traced out by the analyzer deviated from the observed field behavior, the analyzer was readjusted to obtain a better over-all match. The old and the new solutions were compared to determine the reasons for any differences. COMPARISON OF PREDICTED RESERVOIR PRESSURE BEHAVIOR WITH ACTUAL PERFORMANCE Field A The original pressure-production match is entirely adequate as evidenced by the pressure match of the field's history subsequent to Jan., 1952 (see Fig. 1)'.

Water laws important to the mining industry are those which govern or affect the right to use water, to dispose of water after using it in mining or milling, and to discharge waste material into water-courses. They include statutes and court decisions having general applicability, as well as others that pertain specifically to mining. THE INDUSTRY'S CONTRIBUTION TO WESTERN WATER LAW Despite sharp differences of opinion, the water law the Spaniards brought to the Southwest appears to have included some form of appropriation of water. The Mormons, who settled in Utah in the mid-nineteenth century, also developed a system of appropriative water titles. But by far the most profound impact on western water law was made by the gold- seekers who flocked to the Sierra Nevada foothills of California after the discovery of gold in 1848. Much of the gold was extracted from the ground by hydraulic or placer mining, and so the-miners' rights to the use of water became fundamentally important. Since there was no organized government in the foothills and no laws other than those made by the miners, they helped themselves to the land, the gold, and the water needed to work their claims.' They established and enforced regulations governing the acquirement and holding of mining claims and their rights to the water they needed.'In 1879 Justice Field, former Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, spoke for the U. S. Supreme Court in saying that the miners were "emphatically the law-makers, as respects mining, upon the public lands in the State.""

IN the early part of 1952, under the auspices of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, Horizons Inc. undertook an investigation dealing with the preparation of high purity thorium metal in order to develop an economically competitive production process for this metal based on a recovery of the metal by a fused salt electrolysis, since a survey of the literature of thorium chemistry indicated that electrolytic methods had not received much attention, despite the consideration that electrochemical production methods often offer attractive commercial potentialities. Thorium metal has been prepared by methods which fall into four general categories: 1) reduction of halides or double halides; 2) reduction of the oxide; 3) thermal decomposition of halides; and 4) electrolytic methods. Some of the important results obtained by various investigators since about 1900 in recorded attempts to prepare pure thorium metal are summarized in Table I. A bibliography of pertinent literature is included in this paper. Thorium is strongly electropositive and possesses a great affinity for oxygen and nitrogen. As a result the prospects for the production of high purity thorium from aqueous media or oxygen bearing compounds are remote. The most promising and profitable area of investigation for production of thorium metal lies in fused salt electrolysis. Thorium has been produced previously by this technique from halide salts in fused alkali chloride eutectic mixtures. Until recently, however, the lack of known large uses for thorium has inhibited the investigation of these methods. The basic problem in an investigation into fused salt production methods for thorium is to develop a suitable fused salt system for the economic preparation of thorium. The first portion of the work in these laboratories was a small scale investigation of the electrolysis of potassium thorium fluoride, KThF5, under a variety of conditions. High purity thorium was prepared in this manner, but the process did not appear to offer the simplest and most attractive continuous commercial operation. The work reported here relates to an all-chloride system employing thorium chloride as the cell feed. ThCL4 was produced as an anhydrous material stabilized in molten sodium chloride. This product, further diluted in NaCl, was subjected to electrolysis. The electrolytic process has been studied in cells capable of holding up to 50 lb total salt charge. Ductile, pure thorium metal has been reproducibly obtained in this operation. Considerable experimentation was carried out in the preparation of ThCL as a cell feed free from moisture, oxides, and other impurities. Thorium was cathodically deposited as a coarsely crystalline powder interspersed with residual bath salts. Aqueous procedures for separating and recovering the metal were developed. The thorium metal powder obtained has been evaluated with respect to its hardness, chemical purity, and certain other physical properties. Preparation of ThC1,—Thorium chloride, and the chlorides of some other metals (aluminum, beryllium, tantalum, zirconium, etc.) cannot be obtained from aqueous solution by direct heating and evaporation. Evaporation and heating of a solution of thorium chloride yields a hydrated salt or partially hydrated salt, and finally Tho,. Anhydrous thorium chloride is obtained by forming a hydrated ammonium chloride complex salt in acidified water solution, dehydrating this compound, and finally decomposing the double salt and subliming the ammonium chloride component. Various methods for the preparation of anhydrous thorium chloride, in accordance with this concept, were investigated as indicated in Table I1 from hydrated thorium chloride (ThCl, . 3H2O), and from thorium oxycarbonate (ThOCO,). In the method found most satisfactory for this work, thorium oxycarbonate was dissolved in an excess of concentrated HC1 to give a clear yellow solution. At least 2 mol NH,Cl were added to the solution per mol of contained thorium. Ammonium thorium chloride hydrate was crystallized from solution by cooling and saturation with HC1. The resultant complex, (NH,Cl),ThCl;xH,O, was dehydrated by evaporation at 130° to 150°C and thoroughly dried at about 250°C. The dried ammanium thorium chloride was then mixed with sodium chloride in proportions to form NaThCL or to produce a ThCL4-NaCl mixture with a given thorium content. The ammonium chloride was sublimed off at temperatures above 500°C in an inert atmosphere furnace to give an anhydrous chloride source electrolyte, essentially free of Tho, and of NKC1.
