The Republic district, Washington, is of new interest because of the discovery of new gold-silver ore within a unique structural pattern. The camp was revived in 1937 fol1owing installation of a plant to treat low-grade disseminated ore at Knob Hill and further stimulation followed discovery of "cross vein" breccia ores in 1939. Previous writers 1-2 ascribed the quartz veins to a latite porphyry stock, but are in disagreement as to its precise location and extent. This study leads to the conclusion that the ores have a more profound parentage linked to a broad system of thrust faults and folds, the mechanical origin of which is related to a southward trending (Sanpoil) syncline connecting with the Lewis and Clark zone of shift described by Billingsley and Locke3 in 1939. The Republic anticliue and a cross anticline recumbent against Cretaceous granodiorite. and involving some 4000 ft of Eocene andesite flows and early Miocene lake beds, localize the ores, mainly along the east flank, in a series of openings simulating drag folds and steeper than the folded flows. These broad structural features no doubt reach deeply into the basement rocks, where at appropriate crossings and junctions it is suggested that heat effects gave rise to ore-making materials, including, in this instance, intrusive breccias that later were mineralized, and comprising the broader bodies of new ores. The breccia ore is seen crosscutting the earlier narrow quartz veins with a welding of the two at junction areas by a second surge of ore minerals. The ore mined and developed since 1937 equals district production from 1896 to 1937 The ores are typified by cherty quartz, adularia and some barite, with fine pyrite and marcasite, polybasite, pyrargyrite, tetrahedrite and gold. Selenium is present, possibly with gold, as a normal selenide. The disseminated ores, as well as the vein and breccia ores, are localized principally in one 500-ft flow (Knob Hill andesite), which has been traced around the crest of the low northward-plunging Republic anticline. The gold-silver ratio in the earlier narrow veins is about I to 4 and in the disseminated and breccia ores, I to 7. The latter higher silver ratio is deemed to reflect the character of the second surge of mineralization. Sills and dikes of the Columbia River (Miocene) basalt cut the folded structure and ore, thus placing the mineralization in the middle Miocene. Introduction The Republic district of north central Washington is of new interest because of the discovery, development and extraction of new gold-silver ore; also, because of a unique local structural pattern believed to be integral with the broader tectonic mechanism of the continental framework. This district had 40 years of modest rating following its discovery in 1896. Its narrow ore bodies, complex mineralogy. and early inadequate metallurgy, together with the apparent bottoming of ore near 1000 ft, limited production to 300,000 oz of gold and 1,000,000 oz silver between 1897 and 1914. The camp was then reduced to lease Life until 1937, when the gold price increase of 1933 to $35 per ounce

Teamwork is the key to an efficient organization. Cooperation among mining staff members is an obligation owed to the company. The more cooperation the metallurgist receives from underground, the higher milling yield will be, which in turn makes for a greater mine profit. There is no pay for metal left in mill tailings. The metallurgist is not in a position to be of help to either the geologist or mining engineer, but can receive valuable assistance from both. Therefore, the metallurgist must win underground cooperation. The mining engineer is usually interested in geology because of its relation to ore control; in milling because that is where the rock goes. However, any overlapping of interest between geologist and metallurgist is quite remote.

Bituminous coal furnaces give way to coke, and by 1880, the American iron and steel industry was growing at a tremendous rate. In the twentieth century, the number of operating blast furnaces was cut in half while pig iron capacity more than doubled. Bituminous coal furnaces Attempts to relieve the shortage of charcoal by the use of bituminous coal in American furnaces began quite early. Use of bituminous coal in the blast furnace was restricted to areas lacking anthracite deposits but rich in deposits of bituminous coaL The largest concentration of bituminous coal furnaces was in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Western New York state. Other areas included Kentucky and southern portions of the states of Indiana and Illinois. The first trials were made in Pennsylvania around 1780. Gradually several more furnaces began charging coal with their burdens as a partial substitution for charcoal. These so called cheaters were numerous, especially in Western Pennsylvania, which around 1810 began to expand its ironmaking capacity to catch up with the Lehigh Valley and the Schuylkill According to the existing references, complete bituminous coal burdens began to be used in this area only around 1840 when the ironmakers hastily adopted the hot blast apparatus introduced from England. The majority of these furnaces were built, however, after 1844 when an extensive experimental program, carried out at the Shenango Steam and Water Hot Blast Charcoal, Coke and Raw-Coal Furnace produced favorable results, with coal containing up to 35 pct volatile matter. The furnace was located near the Shenango River on the Lackawannok Run, five miles northwest of Mercer, Pennsylvania. It was built, owned, and operated by David Hogeland of Mercer. A two year study was made of the waste disposal of the pebble rock phosphate industry. Solid slimes are impounded in large settling areas and the process water is re-used. Clear effluent was not found to be toxic to fish or animal life in field tests or in controlled experiments. Survey: The pebble rock phosphate mining and washing operations in Florida (fig. 1) are along the river basins of the Alafia to the west and the Peace to the east. The elevation of the area varies between 40 and 170 ft above sea level. Effluents from the operations find their way into one of the two river systems (fig. 2), the Peace River which flows into Charlotte Harbor and the Alafia into Tampa Bay, both along the Gulf of Mexico. There are no major industries along these rivers below the phosphate operations. On the Peace River, the town of Arcadia, approximately 50 miles below the phosphate operations, obtains its water from the river. No other communities along the rivers use them as a source of water supply. Small communities, farms, and ranches are located along the rivers and both rivers drain vast swamp areas. Complaints had been received at the office of the Chief Sanitary Engineer, of the Florida State Board of Health,' that both rivers were turbid at various times and that fishing in the Alafia River was "not as good as it used to be." Tests made by another agency on the dissolved oxygen content of the Alafia River revealed that the oxygen content, at times, was comparatively low.= However, it was not shown that the phosphate wastes had any effect upon the oxygen content of the stream. The river waters are normally brown in color due to drainage from vast swamp areas and are very shallow, from 2 to 6 ft in depth. Turbid waters have been noted in streams coming from the present phosphate operations and also from streams along which there are no operations at the present time. It was learned from "old timers" that, when many more companies than at present were operating along both the Alafia and Peace Rivers forty or fifty years ago, no attention was paid to prohibiting the disposal of slimes along the river basins. During dry periods now in some of the river swamps where drainage ditches have been dug, it is indicated clearly that phosphate slimes were disposed of directly into the river swamps for many years past. Places have been observed where there were alternating strata of phosphate mud, leaf mold, and quartz sand. The former practice of indiscriminate disposal of wastes accounts for some turbidity, particularly after heavy rains and washouts and during clearing of land and digging of drainage ditches. During a six months' period in which a large tract of land was being cleared and drainage ditches dug, a small stream (Six Mile Creek), which previously had been clear, showed a turbidity of 600 ppm and remained turbid until the clearing was completed; after which the stream again flowed clear. An interview with the operator of the municipal water plant, which is about 50 miles below the phosphate operations on the Peace River and which used this river as a source of supply, revealed that there had been no taste in the water for the past ten years, other than that occasionally encountered from increased growth of algae. In the worst case I have observed, viz., two inches difference in circumference, this difference in hardoess, as observed from the cutting, was more marked than in the other cases. Jacob Reese, PittsHukQh, Pa. : I have been very much interested in the reading and discusion of Dr. Dudley's paper. As far as it selates to the data of work performed by the rails, and the determination of their physical and chemical properties, I have nothing but commendation of Dr. Dildley to express, as the investigation covered a greater range, and was performed with more care in detail, than any similar work which has come under my notice. But I beg leave to differ with Dr. Dudley in his conclusions. What are the factors of hardness? Are they not carbon, silicon, phosphorus, and manganese? Now it is an untlisputed fact among iuetallurgiml experts that pure carbon and pure iron make the best steel of all degrees of carburieation, and for all purposes. While carbon hardens, it also strengthens the metal, but silicon, phosphorus, and manganese, in hardening, make the metal also brittle, and are injarious in any amount. Carbon should be called a strengthener; and I claim that a steel rail made hard with carbon, with the other three hardeners absent or reduced to a minimum, will carry a greater tonnage than any of Dr. Dudley's soft rails. But until the basic process is put into operation in this country we cannot expect to produce Bessemer or open-hearth steel without the presence of silicon, phosphorus, and manganese, in consitlerable quautities, aod I greatly donht the possibility of reducing the perceutage of any of them by the prment practice without seriously diminishing the output, and correspondingly increasing the net cost of production; which is an important question, since the increased life of the rail may be more than balanced by its increased cost. I think that the soft rails performed a greater amount of work, because they contained a less amorlllt of silicon, phosphorus, and wangatwe (britlkrcr, if I may so term them), and that carbon does wt reduce the wearing capacity of rails. I believe that a rail made by the baqic process, with silicon, phosphorus, and manganese reduced to a minimum, and containing 0.60 carbon, will be stronger

THE Duquesne property of the Callahan Zinc-Lead Co. is about 20 miles east of Nogales, in southern Arizona. One mine is near the mill, but most of the mill feed is hauled in by truck from a number of small mines. The same sulphides are found in all the ores, in general, but the amounts vary considerably. All ores contain silver, copper, lead and zinc minerals but one mine ships ore high in silver and lead and low in copper and zinc; while another mine ships ore high in copper and zinc, and low in silver and lead. The common sulphides are galena, carrying most of the silver; chalcopyrite; sphalerite, carrying iron in solid solution; and pyrite, in a gangue consisting of limestone, quartz and garnet. Mineralization, is fairly coarse. At the present grind of about 66 per cent minus 200 mesh most of the sulphides are liberated. A small amount of chalcopyrite is locked up with the sphalerite and cannot be liberated at an economic grind, and the copper carried into the zinc concentrate with the sphalerite accounts for the comparatively poor recovery of copper in the copper-lead concentrate. PRODUCTION OF TWO CONCENTRATES The milling problem, which was complicated by the extreme variation in the grade of the feed, was first attacked with the idea of producing a silver-copper-lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate, both with satisfactory grades and recoveries. By February 194I, it was felt that these objectives had been attained, when the grades of the various products and the recoveries were as shown in Table I. [ ] A rough outline of the flowsheet and reagents used is as follows: Minus ¾ -in. feed to a 7-ft. by 36-in. Hardinge ball mill working in closed circuit with a 36-in. Wemco classifier. The classifier overflow passes to the second cell of an 8-cell bank of No. I8 Special Denver Sub-A flotation machines (volume, 22.5 cu. ft. per cell). A rougher concentrate is removed from the second to the fifth cells inclusive, and returned to the first cell, which is the cleaner. THERE has been developed at Latouche a rather unusual system of mining which, for want of a better name, has been called the "Latouche system of mining." It is a modified form of shrinkage stoping applicable to orebodies of large or fairly large size where the ground is such that timbering would not be required in stoping. Mention has been made of this method of mining by Birch,1 who gave no details as it had been in use only a short time and the final outcome undetermined. The system, however, has proved to be entirely successful and it is thought that a paper covering it might be of general interest. Before proceeding with a detailed description of the "Latouche system" a brief description of the property and the various mining methods previously used will be given. LOCATION The Beatson mine of the Kennecott Copper Corp. is situated on the west coast of Latouche Island-, in Prince William Sound, Southwestern Alaska, 45 miles east of Seward, the coast terminus of the U. S. Government Railroad. It is a regular port of call for ships on the Southwestern Alaska run. The island is about 12 miles long and 3 miles wide. A ridge of mountains runs the entire length with a maximum elevation of 2500 feet. CLIMATE Latouche has to contend with possibly the greatest amount of precipitation on the North American continent. The annual average precipitation for the past 4 years has been 188 in., with 248 in. for the year 1926. A rainfall of 4 in. per day is not uncommon. In the winter the thermometer rarely falls below +20° F. and the snowfall is usually heavy during the months of March and April.

PRoblems dealing with the movement or migration of fluids through porous beds have been the subject of much research. The subject is not peculiar to the production of oil and gas, as many investigators have studied the nature of this movement and its relationship to the problems of other industries. Darcyl conducted a series of experiments relating to the percolation of water through filter beds. King2 carried on an extensive series of laboratory experiments with the object of formulating some conception of the rate of movement of water through soils and sand strata in the drainage of surface water into underground channels and subsequent recovery of this water through wells drilled into the source beds for irrigation purposes. Slichter3 undertook a study of the same problem from a mathematical standpoint, and more recently Furnas4 has investigated the flow of gases through beds of broken solids with particular reference to blast-furnace operation. With specific reference to gas production, Muskat and Botset5 of the Gulf Research Laboratory undertook an experimental study to establish quantitatively the characteristics of and laws governing the flow of gases through consolidated and unconsolidated porous materials of fine texture with a view of predicting the performance of gas in an underground reservoir. There seems to be a general agreement that many of the relationships between the numerousfactors influencing the flow of fluids through porous materials are far too complicated to be attacked by analytical methods based upon a knowledge of hydrodynamics. Next to the metal itself, molding sand is the most important raw material used in the manufacture of steel castings. There are no accurate figures available but probably it would be safe to say that the average steel foundry uses approximately 1000 lb. of new molding sand per ton of castings produced. With untreated sands costing from two to four dollars (in some extreme cases it may run as high as eight or ten dollars) per ton delivered at the foundry siding, molding sand is an important item in the cost of making castings, and any information that may help to reduce this sand consumption should be of interest to the industry. Fundamental Considerations In a general way, molding sand in the average steel foundry passes through the cycle shown in Fig. 1. This diagram indicates that if all of the sand could be returned from the shakeout floor to the mixer no new sand would be required from the stock pile and molding costs would be reduced accordingly. Unfortunately, for reasons to be discussed later, it has heretofore been necessary to dilute the used sand constantly with new raw sand in order to maintain the properties that are essential to the production of satisfactory molds.

GREATER depth of exploration drill holes and increasing cost of drilling have been principal factors in reviving interest on the Marquette Iron Range in controlled directional drill-hole deflection. This deflection is obtained by the application of the Hall-Row wedging technique. Modifications were made in the technique and equipment in the effort to simplify and strengthen the procedure. The practice is similar in many respects to the oil well type of deflection with a whipstock.

As we all know, the electric-furnace operation consumes practically 100 pct cold steel scrap. This is in contrast to the operation of the open-hearth furnace, in which 40 pct or more of the charge may be hot metal. The problem of quality of scrap for the electric furnace is really twofold, and in the interest of simplification may be described under two headings: (I) physical specifications, (2) chemical composition. Shipment of electric-furnace scrap to meet required physical specifications is a relatively easy task. The scrap dealer is accustomed to preparing material to certain sizes and shapes. His employees readily execute orders when they are given in terms of length, width and thickness of the material to be loaded.

AN earthquake caused an upheaval in Japan, started fires which destroyed large parts of Tokio, Yokohama and Hakone, and with tidal waves and other consequences extinguished some 68,000 lives and much property right at the beginning of September." Also on Sept. 1, the Italians, offended by the murder of members of the Albanian frontier commission by Greeks, occupied the Island of Corfu, which was viewed as an act of war by Italy against Greece. An appeal by the Greeks to the League of Nations was flouted by the Italians. One of the consequences of these affairs was to throw discredit upon the League of Nations and to excite doubts whether it would be able to survive. On Sept. 19, Greece made the formal apology to the Allies collectively and following that the Italians with-drew from Corfu. During this month also the embroilment between Italy and Jugoslavia over the matter of Fiume came again into prominence. In Bulgaria there was a communist uprising which was promptly put down by the government. The whole country was put under martial law. On Sept. 13 there began a military revolution at Barcelona, in Spain. On Sept. 14 the king of Spain accepted the revolution and charged the leader with the formation of a new government. Cosgrave was reelected president of the Irish Free State, without there being any disorder. Great Britain paid the remainder of her silver debt to the United States, thus writing finis to the Pitman Act. The position of Germany went from bad to worse during September. The mark has become valueless and the business that is being conducted is largely on a gold basis once more, in terms of dollars and pounds sterling. Chancellor Stresseman announced Sept. 24 that the German government had decided to abandon pas-sive resistance to the French and Belgians immediately and unconditionally.

A paper by A. S. Odeh' expounds a capillary-flow theory which purportedly provides a mechanism whereby relative permeability depends on oil-water viscosity ratio and may be greater than unity for high viscosity ratios. Core-measurement results are presented to support the theoretical development. This paper presents arguments to indicate that (1) the theoretical treatment is basically incorrect, (2) data reported are insufficient to support the conclusions and (3) literature cited does not support the theory or the conclusions. PROPOSED MECHANISM The essence of Odeh's theory is that oil flows as a filament along the central portion of a straight, uniform capillary of radius r filling the tube to a radius ri. Surrounding the filament of oil is an annulus of water in which exists vortex motion but no net flow. The water is described as being in "microscopic but not macroscopic" motion. The oil filament is aided in its flow by moving upon the water vortexes as if on roller bearings. This process is presented as a steady-state flow condition. The first objection to the existence of vortexes in the presumed water layer is that the theory provides no mechanism whereby they can be established. This fact was mentioned by C. F. Weinaug in a discussion published with Odeh's paper. The capillary contains no irregularities or obstructions, and the water is not presumed to be in turbulent flow. Apparently, cylindrical symmetry is assumed; therefore, the supposed vortexes must be toroidal, the line of zero velocity being a circle concentric with and in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the capillary. This is a rather difficult picture to accept. The author referred to Yuster's statement' that he had observed the "spinning in place" of otherwise immobile water. Yuster's article does not describe the conditions under which this motion was observed or the means used to observe it. However, the article does make clear that the observed motion was not in a straight, uniform capillary but, rather, apparently oc-cured in some kind of dead-ended pore space. Obvious- ly, such a report cannot be considered as support for Odeh's concept of two-phase capillary flow.

The Nature of Light. - Light is now considered to be an electro- magnetic phenomenon due to a periodic/variation in the energy given off by vibrating electrons. This energy is transmitted by a series of periodic changes that show all the characters of ordinary wave phenomena. The light waves, as they are commonly called, possess certain short wave-lengths that are of the correct magnitude to affect the optic nerves. Other similar waves with longer or shorter wave-lengths belong to the same class of phenomena. Immediately beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum come the so-called "ultra- violet" waves with still shorter wave-lengths and on beyond these we have the X-rays and the "gamma" rays produced by radium. The suggestions of the members of the Institute are very much desired by-the Committee on Nominations prior to deciding upon its nominations to fill the places of those officers who retire early in 1917. The Committee must make its final report to the Board of Directors early ill October.
