Charcoal was the predominant blast-furnace fuel until 1838, when it was found, by the operation of a 2-ton experimental furnace, that anthracite could also be used. This information was a stimulus to the iron industry, particularly in eastern Pennsylvania where anthracite was available at low cost. The production of anthracite pig iron increased steadily and, in 1855, its tonnage exceeded that of charcoal iron. Of the 680 furnaces in operation in 1874, the 226 using anthracite produced nearly one-half the total tonnage. In 1869, the production of coke furnaces exceeded that of charcoal furnaces and, in 1875, coke surpassed anthracite as a metallurgical fuel. In 1907, the output of anthracite pig dropped well below a million tons and its present significance is largely historical. In recent years, the production of coke has gone hand in hand with the production of pig iron and it has gradually attained the position it now occupies as a universal blast-furnace fuel. Charcoal, however, has great merit as a blast-furnace fuel chief1y because of its freedom from ash and sulfur. The harmful effect of the latter and the necessity of keeping the percentage of this element in pig iron at a minimum are well recognized. Other contaminating elements can be reduced to specified limits in the steel-making process, but the control of sulfur belongs essentially to the blast furnace. The purpose of this paper is to point out the distribution of this impurity in blast-furnace materials and to indicate how its presence alters the composition, quantity, and free-running or critical temperature of the slag, and the relation between these factors, fuel economy, and the cost of iron. In the spring of 1930, the question was raised as to the possibility of estimating the depth to which the pyrrhotite-nickel deposit at the Falconbridge mine extended in the earth. This body is 7500 ft. long, it dips at 80° to the north, and it is fairly straight with slight sinuosities. Dr. F. W. Lee suggested that it might be possible to solve the problem by measuring the vertical magnetic intensity, with a good magnetometer, both near the surface of the earth and also at a level a few feet higher in the air. The writer regarded this suggestion with some scepticism, but it was decided to put the scheme to a practical test. In July, 1930, Dr. Lee, Dr. Keys and the writer, with Mr. Joyce and Mr. Belloc as assistants, made a firm, light wooden platform (Fig. 1) measuring 4 by 4 ft. on the top, which was 10 ft. above ground. This platform could be moved easily a few yards by four men, and carried across country in a wagon or by motor truck. Some iron nails were used in its construction, but we were not able to detect their influence on the Askania magnetometer. Nevertheless, in future work, the use of iron should be completely avoided. Readings were taken along a traverse at right angles to the orebody, at several stations, both on the ground and on the platform. The excess readings, over the dike, as compared with those about 800 ft. away, are shown in Table 1. The largest reading, 6.8, is open to suspicion and should be rejected. The depth of the top of the orebody is known by electrical survey, and by actual drilling, to be about 112 to 123 ft., and the covering is sandy glacial drift. Similar readings were taken over a long straight magnetic diabase dike. These also are shown in Table 1. The magnetic vertical intensity is consistently less at the higher level, which is 10 ft. above the lower level.

Very often important discoveries are made in one industry that may be used to advantage in another, but, owing to the rarity that men step out of one industry into another, these discoveries remain unknown outside of the trade or profession in which they are made. The present paper is written solely with the object of bringing to the notice of mining and metallurgical engineers a centrifugal ore-concentrator which eventually may have a great application. Ore- Grading. Fig. 1 represents the action which takes place when solids of different dimensions are stirred up in a box and allowed to settle as minerals of the same size but of different specific gravity. This principle is applied practically in grading china-clay and in enriching tin-slimes. In the latter case the slimes are stirred around in a tub with water and allowed to settle while at the same time the side of the tub is struck with a hammer. The colloidal slimes are then poured off and various slices taken off horizontally. The great drawback of this process is that the particles are deposited horizontally and all the colloids are lost. Fig. 2 represents the action in which the particles are deposited side by side. Here the drawback is the great length of the box needed in order to prevent excessive loss. The alternative to lengthening the box is to increase the force of gravity. Centrifugal force may be regarded practically as the force of gravity augmented. Fig. 3 illustrates the Gee centrifugal machine for grading ores. The Pitch mine of Pinnacle Exploration, Inc. is in the Marshall Pass district, thirty miles east of Gunnison, Colorado. This is a new mining district, having come into existence as recently as 1955, when uranium mineralization was discovered rather late in the days of the uranium boom. There have been three other mines in the district, all of them now inactive. Two of these produced a few hundred tons of very high-grade uranium ore, and the third, Pinnacle's Little Indian 36 mine, produced a few thou- sand tons of lower grade ore. Pinnacle was one of the first companies in the district, and was able to acquire a large acreage. The first two years of exploration were essentially wasted in looking for Plateau-type deposits in a mineralized sandstone bed, but this "wasted" work produced two specific items that paid off. One was an ore-grade outcrop that ultimately became the Little Indian 36 mine, and the other was a boulder of very high-grade uranium ore that eventually led to the discovery of the Pitch mine; however, the actual source of the boulder still has not been found.

Tracer diffusion of Fe59 has been measured in the a-stabilized Fe-1.8 at. pet V alloy from 700° to 1500°C. The activation energies are obtained in both the presence and absence of magnetic order. Furthermore, it is established that diffusion in the alloy is identical to that in pure iron and consequently the values of Do and Q accurately represent the temperature dependence for self-diffusion. The purpose of this investigation is to obtain an accurate estimate of the temperature dependence for self-diffusion in bee iron in both the presence and absence of magnetic order, and, in so doing, to establish the temperature range of the magnetic effect.&apos;" As the temperature interval suitable for diffusion measurements is severely limited in both bee phases of pure iron because of the intervening fee ? phase, the experiments were performed on an a-stabilized alloy containing 1.8 at. pet V. This alloy is bee over the entire range from room temperature to the melting point. Although there have been several independent investigations of self-diffusion of iron in a, iron,1, 3-6 there still exists considerable disagreement regarding the values of Do and Q for the paramagnetic region. The two systematic studies of diffusion in 6 iron6, 7 previously reported are also only in fair agreement; but in view of the extremely small temperature range available for diffusion studies, i.e., 1390o to 1535oC, this is not surprising. It is comparatively easy to obtain accurate values of Do and Q for the a-stabilized alloy inasmuch as measurements can be made over the entire temperature range -700o to 1500°C. However, in order to assume that these same values apply to pure iron requires careful comparison of the data in the a, and 6 regions in both the alloy and pure iron. We have made several measurements in the appropriate temperature ranges and are unable to establish any systematic difference between the diffusion coefficients of iron in pure iron and in the alloy. We therefore conclude that the values obtained for the alloy are truly applicable to pure iron; the complete evidence favoring this conclusion will be discussed later in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental methods will be given here only in barest detail since they have been thoroughly de- scribed elsewhere.l, 7 The alloy was prepared by induction melting and chill casting under argon. Diffusion samples were machined from the ingot and annealed in hydrogen for several days at 900°C to give an average grain diameter of 1 to 2 mm. The penetration profiles of the tracer were established by a sectioning technique, the residual activity being counted after the removal of each section. The tracer used is Fe59 which emits two high-energy ? rays of 1.098 and 1.289 Mev, respectively; these were detected by a ? scintillation counter equipped with a pulse-height analyzer. For the measurements in the temperature range -700o to 1130°C the samples were vapor-plated with Fe59, encapsulated in quartz under vacuo, and annealed in resistance-heated furnaces which are controlled to ±1°C. The specimens diffused at higher temperatures are prepared as edge-welded couples, the two halves being separated by a thin washer of the alloy to prevent sintering. The diffusion anneal is then carried out by inductive heating under a dynamic vacuum. The temperature is monitored pyrometrically. RESULTS The diffusion coefficients are obtained from the penetration profiles in the usual way using the error-function complement relationship. The results over the entire temperature range are shown in Fig. 1. In the linear region, 900o < t > 1500°C the least mean squares (lms) values of the diffusion coefficients are given by D = 1.39 exp[-(56.5 ± 1) x 103/Rt] cm2/sec [l] The average departure of the measured diffusion coefficients from the values given by Eq. [1]In order to determine whether or not the slope is truly constant over the entire range from 900" to 1500°C, the data are arbitrarily divided into two groups, the first containing values between -900" and 1133°C and the second between -1133o and 1500°C. The lms values for the two groups are given by Eqs. [2] and [3]: D = 0.519 exp[-55.7 x 103 /RT](900° to 1133°C) cm2/sec [2] D = 1.45 exp[-56.7x103/RT] (1133° to 1500=C) cm2/sec [3] Thus, there is no significant difference between the high- and low-temperature segments of the linear region. The real and apparent dependence of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, Ds, of gold on crystallo-graphic orientation has been investigated by isolated scratch smoothing and grain boundary grooving experiments. No systematic variation of Ds with orientation was found along the [100] zone. In view of the experimental scatter in these results, however, only aniso-tropy ratios, p, greater than -1.3 would be detectable. Anomalously low values of Ds were found on the [0ll] and [110] zones when the diffusion direction lies along (the scratch or grain boundary groove is perpendicular to) these zones. By comparing these results with a previous y plot study of gold, it is hypothesized that this is not an intrinsic diffusivity effect, but rather it results from a decreased driving force for mass transfer at orientations where the y-plot curvature is negative and appreciable in magnitude relative to y. The characteristics of this type of anisotropy do not appear sEVERAL investigations1-7 have dealt with the anisotropy of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, Ds, of metals as measured by the decay of single or multiple to be in agreement with the hypothesis of fast diffusion along ledges in the surface structure. In certain cases the Fourier method of determining Ds, described in Paper I of this series9 was compared with the second moment analysis in order to determine whether or not the method of analysis affects the anisotropy ratio. While the type of analysis does influence the magnitude of the anisotropy ratio, this effect is not associated with the shape of the profile, but rather is connected with the iterative volume diffusion correction used in conjunction with the second moment analysis. It is further demonstrated that the volume diffusion correction can be too large by either method when the y-plot curvature effect is large. Certain orientations exhibit an unusual temperature dependence of Ds ; this is discussed in terms of the y-plot curvature effect and/or the influence of impurities on Ds . scratches in the surface. Depending on the system investigated, both large1"3&apos;6&apos;7 and small4&apos;5 anisotropies in Ds have been found. Although adsorbed impurities undoubtedly play an important role in determining the magnitude of the anisotropy,8 there are other factors that can give rise to an apparent anisotropy in Ds, thus obscuring the true nature of an intrinsic anisotropy in

BETTER understanding of solid surfaces and their associated adsorption products is of both academic and practical value. The study of detergents and their behavior in cleaning surfaces is fundamentally related to the nature of the products adsorbed and their ability to compete for certain surfaces. Similarly in flotation, the nature of the adsorbate before and after adsorption is basic to clear understanding of the process. The recently developed pellet technique1,2 employing infrared spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for the study of solid surfaces. Absorption bands, which are infrared-active, may be observed for adsorbed products. Also any changes in the surface substrate that occur as a result of adsorption may be detected by means of differential spectra. In applying the pellet technique to solids of large surface area, French and his coworkers3 have surveyed the adsorption of organic flocculants on clay minerals, oleic acid on fluorite, and ammonia on cracking catalysts. Recent work on application of differential infrared spectroscopy to the study of solid surfaces&apos; has demonstrated that the difference between a sample and a reference can be obtained with double-beam instrumentation. In this way displacement of surface products, adsorption of new products, and differences in the substrate, if any, may be detected. Experimental Procedure: Potassium iodide pellets were used in this study, prepared from recrystallized analytical reagent grade KI. Grinding was carried out in a Fisher mechanical agate mortar. Two-gram plates containing the solid under study were pressed in a special evacuated die constructed in the laboratory at the University of Utah." Concentration depended on the solid in question. Zinc sulfide and willemite are sufficiently transpar- ent in the infrared region for concentrations as high as 20 mg of mineral in 2g of KI to be used. Zinc oxide is even more transparent, permitting concentrations as high as 60 mg in a 2-g plate. For non-differential operation, however, much lower concentrations (2 to 10mg/2g KI) had to be used. Spectra were obtained on a Per kin-Elmer 21 double-beam recording infrared spectrophotometer. A sodium chloride prism was used giving a spectral range of approximately 2 to 15 v wave length. For differential runs a resolution of 1000 was used and the scanning speed was controlled commensurate with instrument response. The response was checked continuously and each spectrum was repeated several times. For nondifferential runs a resolution of 927 was used. Zinc oxide used was analytical grade oxide fume. The zinc sulfide was precipitated from solution with analytical grade zinc sulfate and sodium sulfide. The precipitate was washed and centrifuged several times and dried. Before use the precipitate was washed in dilute HCl and then treated with saturated NH4Cl to remove any bulk oxides and sulfates. X-ray patterns of the precipitate were comparable to that of the natural mineral sphalerite. Considerable difference of opinion seems to exist as to whether the rate of air flow when a fan is placed on a given duct should be determined by the use of static pressure or total pressure characteristics. A little study will show that both methods are correct. Assume that a fan is connected to a duct by an expansion piece as shown in Fig. 1, and that steady flow is established. Considering the atmospheric pressure as zero pressure, let the static head at the outlet of the fan be h and the velocity at this point be vl. The total head at the outlet is then h + „"• The total head at this point must be equal to the total head at the end of the duct plus the losses that have occurred between the two points. Left be the friction loss in the straight duct, s the shock loss in the dif- fuser, and v2 the velocity at the end of the duct. Then ig. 1.—Fan on duct. If these two curves are plotted on the same chart, the intersection indicates the rate of flow when steady flow is established. We may look at this problem in another way. The static pressure at the outlet of the fan is the static pressure of the fan and it is also the static resistance of the duct from that point to the end. The friction in the straight duct is f. If the duct were the same area as the fan outlet, would be the static resistance of the whole duct system. A fully field tested mine-wide data/communications system is presented which integrates total data acquisition, control, and instrumentation into a single system. Installations at Kitt #1 and Amonate Mines (W.Va.1 use an LSI-11 series computer which communicates with easily installed field data stations over a single twisted wire pair. Complete field test data are presented, identifying the problems and successes experienced in the development, installation, operation and maintenance of the system, and the training of mine personnel. Of particular interest is the system installed at Kitt #1 which has been in continuous use since February 1982. The paper will also deal with the application of a computer-based carbon monoxide monitoring system installed at the Amanate mine in September 1982. The purpose of that system is to monitor air quality and to provide early fire detection in the belt entry to permit the use of belt air for face ventilation.

THE correct sampling of coal and coke is becoming important to an ever increasing number of producers and consumers. This, therefore, may be an opportune moment to examine where we stand with regard to existing and proposed methods. In this paper an attempt will be made to review, as briefly as possible, some of the considerable amount of painstaking research which has been done in the last 10 years, and which has unquestionably led to a much better understanding of the subject. In so doing we shall try, on the one hand, to make clear where substantial progress has been made, and on the other hand, to draw attention to points that require further investigation. The paper is divided into sections in order to emphasize the major divisions of the subject; further, in order to retain this emphasis, detailed consideration of some of the points has been relegated to appendixes. No attempt has been made to give a complete survey of the literature, as this has already been done by L. A. Bushell.2 The following abbrevia-tions will be used: A.E., average error; P.E., probable error; S.W.R., size-weight ratio; B.S.I., British Standards Institution.

PORTLAND cement is manufactured under either of two general proc-esses, the wet or the dry. The raw materials in general consist of limestone, shells, marl, cement rock, clay, shale, blast-furnace slag, etc., so proportioned that when calcined the desired composition will be obtained. In the wet process the combined raw materials are ground to extreme fineness in the presence of water, to a resulting slurry of from 30 to 50 per cent moisture content. The moisture of the slurry may be reduced by thickening or filtering processes for feed to the cement kiln or the slurry may be fed to the kiln with its full percentage of water. The dry process differs from the wet in that the surface moisture of the raw materials is removed prior to grinding. For the drying of these materials heat is required and in most cases is produced by burning of raw fuel either on grates or stokers before the dryers or in suspension in the form of pulverized coal, oil or gaseous fuel. The power required for making the cement is sometimes purchased from outside sources; sometimes it is generated from the heat in the waste gases leaving the cement kilns, or generated at the plants direct from raw fuel. We have, then, as the possible requirements of fuel in the cement industry: (1) fuel for power generation, (2) fuel for drying raw materials, including coal before pulverizing, and (3) fuel for burning the raw materials to cement clinker. There is no essential difference in quality required in fuel for burning the materials by the wet and dry processes.

While Utah remains an unimportant factor in oil production, exploratory drilling was carried on in six widely separated areas, extending from the southwest to the northeast corner of the state. One new gas field, the Last Chance or Starvation Creek anticline in Emery County, and two new gas horizons in the Clay Basin field of Daggett County, were thereby discovered during 1934. Exploratory Drilling South Central Utah Emery County—Last Chance Anticline.—The test of the Ramsey Petroleum Corporation in sec. 18, T.26S., R.7E., on the apex of this anticline (vert. closure 700 ft.; area within closing contour line, as mapped by U.S. Geological Survey, 26,000 acres) encountered gas in the Moenkopi formation of lower Triassic age at depths ranging from 2530 to 2863 ft. The total thickness of sandstone, sandy shale and -limestone beds in which gas was encountered is approximately 50 ft. The well was tested at a depth of 2755 ft., gaging 21,000,000 cu. ft. of gas, R.P. 410 lb. The well is being plugged back to the lowest gas horizon at 2771 ft. from a total depth of 3168 ft. Gas from this well probably will be used for the drilling of a second well structurally lower, to test the oil possibilities of the Moenkopi formation as well as of the upper and lower Pennsylvania formations, of which the latter so far remains untested in South Central Utah. The well was not drilled deep enough to determine more definitely the western margin of the petroliferous Paradox Basin of lower Pennsyl-vanian age of southeastern Utah. Woodside Anticline.—This field, lying immediately northeast of the San Rafael swell, contains, according to maps of the U.S. Geological Survey, 8380 acres within its lowest closing contour line 700 ft. below the apex. A well was drilled by Utah Oil Refining Co. at the apex in sec. 12, T.l9S., R.l3E., during 1924. Gas was encountered in the Moenkopi and Kaibab formations of Triassic and Carboniferous (Permian) age respectively. The flow is estimated at 21,000,000 cu. ft., R.P. 900 lb.,

IN view of the immense amount of attention that silicosis has received in this country in the past few years, it is timely to review the status of the silicosis problem at present. Who gets silicosis? The individual exposed to the inhalation of free silica dust. The effects upon the individual depend upon the amount of silica inhaled or, in other words, the severity of exposure, rather than upon any special variation or susceptibility among those exposed. A considerable amount of study has been given to determine what may be the role of predisposing causes in the development of silicosis. To men-tion one instance, at the Picher Clinic careful records were kept of all previous illnesses of the men examined as well as abnormalities present at the time of examination. Examinations of over 27,000 miners were made during the years the clinic was conducted under governmental auspices-a very fair sized sample. The general conclusions from all this work were that the incidence of silicosis is not appreciably influenced by racial, structural, or other inherent qualities; it is influenced by acquired defects-particularly as these affect the lungs. That is to say, the average run of human beings respond similarly to similar exposures to silica dust and those whose lungs are already impaired by tuberculosis or other pulmonary disease acquire silicosis more readily than those with healthy lungs. It may well be, and there is some clinical evidence in support, that negroes acquire silicosis more readily than do whites, but the infection factor has not been so carefully studied among negroes exposed to silica as it has among whites. We know that tubercle infection is more prev-alent among negroes than among whites. There may be other factors concerned in the development of silicosis in negroes as compared to whites, but there is not available information upon which to base posi-tive statements.

THE Mufulira mine in Northern Rhodesia is 13° south of the Equator and at an altitude of 4100 ft above sea level. The concentrator was planned in 1930 to treat about 10,000 tons of ore per day, but before construction work had gone very far the size of the plant was reduced to 1500 tons daily capacity. Then just as the construction was finished in December 1931, the price of copper did not warrant the commencement of operations and it was not until October 1933 that the mine re-opened. Extensions have been made to the plant in 1034, 1935, 1936 1937, 1940 and finally in 1945. The capacity of the plant when the 1945 extension is completed will be 9500 short tons per day. The various extensions have been carried out with the minimum confusion and with great skill on the part of the designers and the erection engineers. In dealing with the plant in this paper it is proposed to give an outline of the present practice and only to refer to past practice when it is considered of particular interest. ORE TREATED The ore consists of fine grained highly siliceous, felspathic and argillaceous quartzites, the latter containing graphitic carbon and locally termed graywacke. These rocks are considerably altered near the surface and on the fringes of the ore body. Despite extensive efforts at mixing, both underground and in the crushing plant, many sudden changes of ore take place in the mill feed. The minerals are chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite with relatively unimportant amounts of malachite, native copper, azurite, covellite and chrysocolla. Gold is present at about 1 oz to a thousand tons, and silver at about 2 dwt. per ton. With increasing depth the nonsulphide content or, as commonly termed locally, the oxide content of the ore is decreasing and is now less than 0.25 pct against a high of 0.77 pct. CRUSHING OPERATIONS The first stage of crushing is done underground where the oversize from 12-in. grizzleys is fed to a 56 X 72-in. jaw crusher. At the Selkirk shaft two 10-ton skips deliver the run of mine ore at a rate of 450 tons per hour to the 400-ton capacity shaft bins. One 6 ft wide Ross chain feeder and one locally made air-operated finger feeder feed the two 30-in. McCully crushers. Ahead of each crusher is a 6 X 9-ft spring grizzley spaced at 5 in. on a 35° slope. Neither the Ross chain feeder nor the finger feeder is entirely satisfactory and for the wet, muddy and sticky ore that has to be handled it is planned to replace these with two 6-ft wide apron pan feeders. The kinetics of the growth of sulfate layers on blocks of Cu20 has been studied between 688" and 800°C. At 788c the over-all weight increases followed the parabolic rate law, with k = 216 30 sq mg per cm4 min, using a 1:1 entering gas mixture of SO2:02. At 757 after an initial linear period the parabolic rate law was followed, with k = 57.8 10 sq mg per cm4 min. The gas mixture required a platinum catalyst to produce the maximum SOs pressure. The sulfation rate at 757&apos; and 788c was high until all the CUZO had changed into a core of CuO, when it became very much lower. At 757°C marker experiments showed that the sulfates (CuO. CuS04 and CuSO4) grow outwards from the oxide surface, but CuO. CuS04 mixed with CuO was found beneath the markers. At 688 markers were found at the CuO. CuS04/CuS04 interface. Visual observations at 757 showed a liquid eutectic moving beneath the sulfate surface. causing very rapid sulfation and extruding to solidify as thick &apos;needles" up to 8 mm long. Marker experiments have shown conclusi.cely that CuO grows on Cu20 in air by the outward migration of copper. ThermODYNAMIC measurements on the sulfate and basic sulfate of copper, reported recently,&apos; are followed here by measurements of the rates of formation of these sulfates on cuprous oxide, in order to provide a background for the understanding of roasting processes. peretti2 and McCabe and Morgan3 have shown that the phase Cu20 lies next to Cu2S when the sulfide is roasted under conditions where sulfates will be formed. Since this would present too complex a system for kinetic study, the present work4 has been based on the kinetics of sulfation of the oxide phase. The results of a study of the kinetics and mechanism of the sulfation of cobaltous oxide have recently been reported.4,5 Results on the sulfation of cuprous oxide have also appeared,6 but are at variance with those to be reported here. This seems to be because the previous workers6 did not obtain constant SO3 pressures from the SO2/O2 sulfating gas mixtures used, as will be discussed later. Wadsworth, Leiter, Porter, and Lewis found that the sulfates produced when SO2/O2 mixtures are passed over Cu20 at red heats are CuS04 and the basic sulfate CuO.CuSO4. When the decomposition of CuS04 was followed&apos; by differential thermal analysis, a stage corresponding to CuO .CuS04 was reached before decomposition into the oxide occurred. APPARATUS The vertical furnace used for quantitative studies was a conventional resistance-heated and propor- tionately controlled furnace with an even zone (1 deg) which was 4 cm long. The gas mixtures of SO2 and 02 were made by mixing measured flows from capillary flowmeters and drying over phosphorous pentoxide before passing them into the Pyrex top-piece of the furnace assembly. A mullite tube of bore 2% cm was used as reaction vessel and at the bottom of this tube was a trap for SO3, which condensed as a colorless liquid. The residual gas was led into a fume cupboard for ventilation to the atmosphere. The furnace used for visual observations of needle growth and other phenomena consisted of a transparent silica reaction tube of bore 3 cm, having an optically flat silica window sealed into its wall. The reaction tube was clamped vertically, inside a mullite tube of bore 4 cm and length 42 cm which was heated by Kanthal windings. The window in the silica reaction tube was arranged opposite a hole 3 cm wide and 2 cm tall which had been cut in the wall of the mullite winding tube 19 cm from its top end. A binocular microscope was used to look through the window, illumination being provided by a focusing microscope-lamp offset sideways and downwards. The oxide block to be sulfated was suspended from the removable Pyrex top-piece to the reaction tube, by means of which it was inserted at the start of the experiment, and through which entered the S02/02 gas mixture. The variation of the temperature inside the reaction tube with horizontal and vertical displacement from the window was investigated, and, while it can be said that the temperature was constant 1 deg, its value at a given position was known only to 12 deg. In both furnaces, the oxide block to be sulfated was suspended from a small silica hook immediately downstream from a platinum thimble used as catalyst, which was held on a long silica rod from a Pyrex spring attached to the removable Pyrex top-piece of the furnace. The spring was only included in the quantitative sulfating furnace; its sensitivity was 1.4 cm per g and it was found to be free from creep in a 16-hr test when carrying the working load. The extensions were followed by a cathetometer which could be read to 0.001 cm, corresponding to i0.7 mg. Extensions of the spring were measured on adding weights between 5 and 500 mg to the working load (thimble + oxide block), and Hooke&apos;s law was closely obeyed. SAMPLES Cuprous oxide blocks were prepared by oxidizing Johnson Matthey "Specpure" copper sheet of 1 mm thickness (impurities: iron at 3 ppm, silver at 2 ppm, lead, nickel, sodium, and silicon each at 1 ppm, calcium, chromium, magnesium, and manganese each at less than 1 ppm) for 6 days in air at 1000°C in a re-crystallized alumina boat. Flotation has been so closely allied with the sulfide minerals and their early and associated oily reagents that the term "oil flotation" has erroneously been applied to the entire flotation process. Today, the term "chemical flotation" might be used to advantage. Flotation literature has dealt primarily with the removal of sulfides from non-sulfide gangues, and the separation of one sulfide from another. Now, the application of the process to the separation of nonsulfide minerals is coming to the fore; and from the standpoint of the number of commercial minerals involved, the flotation of nonsulfides offers the larger field. Here, soap or soap-forming substances, such as the fatty acids and their derivatives, are used; hence there may well be a subdivision of the chemical flotation process called "soap flotation." Early experimenters learned that it was easy to form a froth or foam that would carry a part or all of the ore charge over the lip of the flotation machine; but this could not be regarded as flotation because of the lack of selectivity. Doubtless soap was one of the first reagents tried, and doubtless it was rejected on account of its gangue-carrying properties. Now this same gangue-carrying ability makes soap an acceptable reagent, for we are dealing with that which, among sulfides, is considered "gan-gue." As in the flotation of sulfides, so in the flotation of nonsulfides, the selective flocculation of the mineral and the dispersion of the gangue are the first objectives. In fact, these two phenomena epitomize flotation. They depend upon the unlike surface properties of the respective minerals; and as long as the components of an ore have unlike surface properties, a separation is possible, at least in theory. Often in nonsulfide flotation it makes little difference which mineral floats and which is depressed; generally only a separation is sought.

Report of Secretary TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen -I herewith present a report of some of the more important activities of the Institute for the year of 1922. The outstanding feature of the year is the optimism felt by our members despite the continued depression in the mining industry. January 1, 1921, found many of our members out of employment or drifting into other industries to tide them over the depression; but almost universally the feeling has been that this was but a temporary condition and that sooner or later the necessary production of raw materials would enable these members to return to their former activities and renew their participation in Institute affairs As the year passed conditions improved and, before it ended, many had found employment in their previous occupations. Bearing in mind that this depression has been very real, we have reason to be well satisfied with the work that the Institute has been able to do The loss of members through inability to pay dues has been large, and income has been correspondingly reduced, but it proved to be materially in excess of that anticipated early in the year, so that a substantial and unanticipated balance was carried forward toward the activities of 1923.

EVEN before the arrival of Cortes in 1519, the history of Mexico was closely linked to that of its mineral production; the mining activities of the Aztecs being thus described by Clavigero, one of the early historians: In the mountains of Anahuac there abound in veins all kinds of metals, and infinite variety of other fossiliferous products. The Aztecs obtained gold from the countries of the Cohuijques, of the Mixtecas, of the Zapotecas and from various other places. They gathered that precious metal usually in grain, from the sands of the rivers, keeping a certain portion for the crown. They obtained silver from the mines of Taxco, of Tzumpango and others; however, this metal was not as esteemed by them as by other neighboring nations. They had two kinds of copper; one hard, which they used instead of iron to make sickles, lances and all kinds of rural and military instruments and another, soft, with which they made kettles, goblets and other receptacles. This metal abounds mainly in the province of Zacatula and in that of Cohuijques, which at present is in the kingdom of Michoacan. They obtained tin from the mines of Taxco and lead from those of Izmiquilpan, located in the country of the Otomiea. From the tin they made money, and the lead, we know they sold in the market places, but we ignore the uses to which they applied it. They also had mines of iron in Tlaxcala, in Taxco and in other places; but they either had not discovered them, or did not know how to make use of the metal they contained. In Chilapa there were mines of mercury, and in other places there were mines of sulphur, alum, vitriol, cinnabar, cohre and of a white earth which they esteemed highly. As regards mercury and vitriol, we do not know of what use they were to them; the other metals they used in paintings and dyes. There were then great abundance of amber and asphalt-bitu- men of Judea--on the coast of the seas and many cities of that territory paid tribute of one and the other to the kingdom of Mexico. They mounted the amber in gold, and it was only used as ornament and display by them. With the asphalt they made certain perfumes. The following extracts dealing with pre-Colonial gold are taken from the famous "Cartas de Relación" to Charles V, in which Cortea described the progress of the Conquest: . . . here there came two chiefs who owned lands in the valley; one four leagues down the valley and the other two leagues up the valley and they gave me some gold necklaces of little value and seven or eight girls. . . . . . . that day I left the City of Churultecal and traveled four leagues to some villages of the City of Cuasucingo where the natives received me very well and gave me women and pieces of gold. . . .

The Cripple Creek district occupies a cluster of foot-hills on the south side of Pike&apos;s Peak and is a portion of an extensive, though uneven, plateau which unites the eastern range of the Rocky mountains with the Sangre de Cristo. It is essentially a small volcanic area, of about 20 square miles, amid the granite of the Front range. But though, when regarded as a rich mining district, it may be considered as an isolated area,* yet, geologically, it is, as Whitman Cross has pointed out, only an outlying portion of a much larger volcanic region, which stretches to the south and west, around Silver Cliff and the Rosita hills, forming the picturesque country cut by the deep cañons of the Arkansas river and its tributaries. The mines are situated amid a volcanic complex, consisting of tuffs and breccias which have been penetrated by an extensive system of dikes and other intrusive masses. The prevailing formation is an andesite breccia, which lies upon the worn surface of the granite and fills the deep basin around a volcanic vent. The breccia, since its deposition, has been broken into by several eruptions of phonolite and, later still, by a series of thin dikes of basalt and other allied rocks of a highly basic composition. The successive sedimentary formatione which, elsewhere in Colorado, lie upon the basal granite, are not represented in the district; whatever sediments were laid down before the volcanic period must have been removed by erosion, and there is very little evidence which affords a datum-line whereby the geological age of the volcanic eruptions can be determined.
