Measurements of gravity with gravimeters have come into increased use in this country and abroad in the past five years. Probably 100 to 125 gravimeter parties are working in the United States alone. In oil exploration, gravimeter methods have relegated the gravity pendulum definitely to second place, if not third, and now closely rival and possibly surpass the torsion balance in many applications. Gravimeters have lately been applied in mining, although it is doubtful whether they will ever replace electrical or magnetic methods in this work. Notwithstanding the widespread application of gravimeters, there has been no article covering the entire field in the domestic or foreign literature. The purpose of this paper is to meet the demand for comprehensive engineering information on the subject. The working principles of a number of gravimeters will be illustrated and treated in relation to the action of corresponding seismometers and astatization methods. The mathematical discussion of theory has been confined to the most necessary fundamentals and been given in as elementary form as possible. A description of calibration methods constitutes the last part of the paper. The symbols shown at the top of page 197 will be used in equations throughout the paper. Dynamic and Static Gravity Methods Methods of measuring gravity fall into two groups: dynamic and static methods. The first group involves the measurement of time. Examples are: determinations of the period of oscillation of a pendulum, measurements involving the free fall of a body, and comparisons of gravity with the centrifugal force of a rotating body. Measurements in the second group of gravity methods are concerned with deflections of certain indicators when the force of gravity is in equilibrium with another comparison force.

The surfrrce-diffusion coefficients (DJ for Aulg8 on (100) and (111) surfaces of copper have been determined between 1050" and 780°C using a new avuzlysis imd experimental procedure. The results are: D, has also been determined fm cua4 at 870°C, and the values found are 4.5 times larger than those measured by the grain boundary grooving technique for the same surface orientations. This difference is felt to result from the approximate nature of the mathematical solution used in the present work. Attempts to measure D, for silver on copper and silver surfaces indicated a means of matter transport different from surface diffision was dominant in moving tracer from the source out over the surface. Cnlculations and experiment both indicate that this is the flow of silver through the vapor phase which completely masks the much smaller flow due to surface diffusion. The previous self-difhsion studies of D, for silver and copper are discussed in terms of our own analysis and found to yield values of D, factors of lo5 or more greater than those found by the grain boundary grooving tech -nique. UNTIL about 5 years ago it was widely believed that the activation energy for surface diffusion, AH, , was less than that for grain boundary diffusion, AHb,, which in turn was less than that for diffusion through the lattice, AHz.' This was concluded from various evidence that D,> Db>Dl, and one tracer study of D, for silver on silver from which AH, was inferred.2 In 1959 Mullins and Shewmon demonstrated that D, could be determined from the kinetics of the growth of grain-boundary grooves.3 Using this procedure, Gjostein measured D, on copper between 800" and 1050°C and found that the activation energy was roughly equal to AHl .4 Subsequent work on copper,5" silver,',' and goldg between the melting temperature T, and 0.87 T, confirmed that AH, as determined using the grain boundary grooving or scratch-relaxation technique was equal to or greater than AHz. During the same period, Drew and Pye again determined AH, for silver on silver using a tracer techniquelo and a mathematical solution similar to that of Nicker son and arker.' Though the values of D, Drew and Pye measured at any given temperature were about 200 times smaller than those reported by Nickerson and Parker, they again found a low activation energy of about 10 kcal, or about one fifth that found at the higher temperatures with the mass transport technique. A distinguishing characteristic of these two previous tracer studies is that they have worked at low temperatures (-1/2 T,) where they felt volume diffusion was negligible and then analyzed these data as if all tracer atoms leaving the source flowed out into and remained in a homogeneous high-diffusivity surface layer of undefined thickness. This is totally different from the model used in the mass-transport studies or the studies of grain boundary diffusion, which assume the high-diffusivity surface layer to be only a few angstroms thick. If this latter model is applied to the earlier tracer studies, it is shown that the tracer has really pe!etrated into the lattice a mean distance of 1000A. Thus the tracer distribution observed after an anneal is thought to be due to the combined effects of surface and volume diffusion. Independent of the relative validity of the two models, it seems evident to us that any comparison of the values of D, as determined in these two ways is meaningless and misleading, since the values of D, and AH, obtained in these two ways would be totally different for the same physical distributions of tracer. Once the fundamental difference in the approaches of the two techniques is established, we are faced with the question of which model better approximates physical reality. Here all the evidence seems to be on the side of the ''thin surface layer" analysis. In fact, the authors of Refs. 2 and 9 do not argue for the "thick-layer model" we have described; they simply invoke it through the equation they use to calculate D, . The primary evidence for the thin-film approach is: a) grain boundary grooves and scratches widen in proportion to tU4 and Mullins' rigorous analysis shows that this is only valid for a surface layer which is quite thin relative to the width of the groove;11 b) all accepted or seriously discussed models of solid-vapor interfaces and high-angle grain boundaries assume that the disturbed region of the interface is at most a few a0 thick. MOULD*—Has consideration been given to the problem of retreating the 4,000,000 ton tailings pile to recover the very considerable amount of asbestos fiber that was lost over the years due to insufficient operation and poor recoveries? Also, what was known about the possible content of chromite and the sulphides of nickel and cobalt? M. J. MESSEL (author's reply)—Consideration was given to the problem but nothing concrete has been done up to this time. W. P. MOULD—I am certain the tail- ings contain a very considerable quantity of fiber, not all of which is in the shortest lengths, because in the milling of talc rock from a neighboring location having a common origin with the asbestos bearing serpentine source of the tailings pile, a concentrate carrying 15 pct Ni and Co in complex sulphides and constituting about 4/10 of 1 pct of the talc rock was recovered. In the belief that the tailings also contained an appreciable content of chromite (then in demand, 1937) it was suggested to the management of the asbestos company that a truck load of the current tailings be sent to the flotation plant of the talc company where it would be put over the concentrating tables in an effort to discover the presence and roughly the percentages of chromite, nickel, and cobalt. Preparations for the test were woefully inadequate and the test was completely snarled up by the surprisingly large quantity of asbestos fiber from 1 in. long down to very short fiber, all of which matted up and plugged launders and pumps with disastrous effects and practically the total loss of the sample. If anything was indicaded by the test, it was that a wet process for milling asbestos was worthy of very serious consideration. M. J. MESSEL—A wet milling process for tailings retreatment only, is at present under study at our plant. One asbestos mining company in Canada has constructed a fairly large test plant for this purpose, but as yet no definite results have been obtained other than in a small test unit plant which were in some respects quite encouraging.

It is with some trepidation that I approach my subject, for I know that I shall at once incur the suspicion of the mechanical engineer, with his concern for boiler tests and efficiencies; of the mining engineer, with his mechanization problems; and of the chemical engineer with his unit processes. Nevertheless, it must be recognized that the technology of fuels, the systematic body of knowledge relating to the production, processing and utilization of mineral fuels, has grown to such proportions and involves so many widely diverse applications of fundamental science and engineering that it behooves us to stop and consider just what its status is in relation to other technologies, as well as in relation to the present and future needs of the social order. The time has come when technologists, applied scientists and engineers must consider the possible effects that their achievements may have on Society. The development of a machine to - -replace -several hundred men is a fine achievement when considered solely from the point of view of creative endeavor. But what of the men who are displaced by the machine! Does not the responsibility for the development of this machine embrace as well the consequences of obsolescence and technological unemployment resulting from such development? I believe that it does and that we must recognize this fact in our practice of engineering and tech- nology as well as in the training of future engineers and technologists. Magnitude of the Fuels Industry Fuel technology is the body of knowledge that relates to the mineral fuels. The fuels industry is by far the most important of all Our mineral industries. The chart in Fig. I, reprinted from U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6643, indicates the compartive values of metals, fuels and other nonmetallic minerals for the year 1929. Of the grand total of 13¼ billions of dollars in value of minerals at the mines, the mineral fuels contributed 48 per cent. Coal, with 34.4 Per cent, exceeded the value of any other single mineral. In fact, the value of the production of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines alone anand exceeds the value of the gold production of the entire world. Petroleum and natural gas in 1929 contributed 14.3 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively, of the total value of world mineral production. So much for the world picture; let us now look at the situation in the United States. Over the 60-year period 1880 to '939, $46,409,727,000 of metal1ic products, $80,788,852,000 of fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas, natural gasoline) and $27,871,-ooo,ooo of nonmetallic minerals other than fuels were produced. A prospecting project for deep-seated sulphide ore bodies will be expensive and means a considerable economic risk. The high costs depend on the demand for extensive drilling. It is therefore important to find effective methods to estimate the outcome of different prospecting strategies. The results from a preliminary study of the possibility of using mathematical methods for this purpose are presented. We have found that mathematical methods, especially simulation technique, might be an important tool in such exploration work. A mathematical model of an ore field and of a drilling procedure has been constructed. A set of parameters describes the geometry, the size distribution and the intensity of ore bodies. Another set describes the geometry and the intensity of drill holes. Some preliminary results are given of Monte-Carlo simulations and probability calculations.

It may seem to be almost unnecessary to occupy the time of the Institute in further consideration of a question which has been so comprehensively treated in papers already on file in our own Transactions and in those of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Unfortunately, however, the results of these concerted efforts have not been materially to increase our stock of Knowledge in the direction sought for; and as the necessity for this information is becoming.more and more apparent as the demand for structural materials increases, it is believed that by continuing the agitation by means of discussions in this and kindred societies, whose members are vitally interested in obtaining reliable data as to the properties of the materials they are called upon to work with, public opinion may be educated up to the importance of exerting such an influence upon the law-makers of the country as will result in the formation of a competent board, with adequate means at its disposal, to carry out this great work in a manner alike acceptable to the makers and users of the materials in question. It may be proper in the first place to glance briefly at what has been attempted thus hr, then to indicate some of the more important lines of needed investigation, and finally to consider reasons why government aid may with propriety be sought for in carrying on the work. At a convention of the Society of Civil Engineers held at Chicago June 5th, 1872, it was, on motion of General William Sooy Smith, resolved, that, " Whereas, American engineers are now mainly dependent upon formula for the calculation of strength of the different form of iron and steel, not based on experiments upon American materials and manufacture; and " Whereas, There differ greatly in many of their ch~racteristics front thoae of foreign production, both in their nature and forma: therefore,

The development of engineering rock classification systems has received considerable at tent ion during the past few years. The purpose, application and method of assigning an index of rock quality, vary considerably between these systems. Several of them are directed toward the assessment of stability and support potential of an excavation whereas other systems are estimating a particular response of the rock, i.e. blastability or ripability. In the most widely accepted engineering rock classification systems, rock quality is expressed either in terms of meaningful descriptions or by a quantitative evaluation of a geomechanical property or properties. The application of sonic wave parameters in the engineering classification of rock mass and rock material has been the subject of considerable interest amongst investigators. The advantages of utilizing such techniques include minimal sample preparation, capabilities for large scale testing and the ability to perform non- destructive as well as reproducible tests. The purpose of the research presented in this paper was to determine the most appropriate sonic wave parameters for engineering rock classification purposes, to utilize these findings in developing new or modifying existing classification systems and, finally, to apply this information in the prediction and analysis of blasting wave characteristics.

IN THE autumn of 1922, British Petroleums Ltd. found oil of 14° Baume in a sand 17 ft. thick in its No. 2 well at Wainwright, 120 miles southeast of Edmonton. This greatly encouraged drilling in the Wainwright-Irma area and this past summer several wells were started, three of which are now completed' and the others still being drilled. Of the three completed, No. 4 British Petroleums contains oil; No. 3 British Petroleums gave a show of oil but so far has not given much hope of becoming a commercial producer; and No. 1 Maple Leaf Co., as now finished, is a gas well with a daily flow of gas of about 2,500,000 cu. ft. at a closed pressure of 700 lb. An oil sand is reported . to have been encountered below the producing gas horizon, in the Maple Leaf well but has not been tested. Operations on this well have been suspended for the winter. The Geological Survey of Canada this past summer undertook a geological investigation of this area with the object of defining the structures with which the oil and gas are associated. The 'structure underlying this portion of the plains was supposed to-be a terrace with the western edge dipping into the Alberta syncline and with a monoclinal structure to the east. By accurate leveling on known geological horizons on this terrace, a number of gentle folds were located and it is in these folds that the oil land gas are found. At the British Petroleums Nos. 2-and- 4 oil wells, the western flank of the fold has a gentle dip of only a few feet to the mile to the southwest whereas the strata on the eastern flank dip to the northeast about 40 ft. in 1/2 mile, the strike of the fold being northwest and southeast. How far oil will be found down the gentle southwest dip is unknown but probably the productive part of the fold will not exceed 1 mile in width, and possibly less. No. 3 British Petroleums well is on the strike of the fold 1 mile southeast of the two oil wells. The sand that was productive in Nos. 2-and 4 wells was not present in this well or, if present, was very thin and unproductive. Two other sand horizons, however, were encountered. The upper of these

Like the caboose on the end of a long freight train L made up of mineral and metal processing and consuming industries, the mining industry progresses according to the movement of the train to which it is coupled. Sometimes the caboose rolls smoothly; occasionally it bumps along on the ties; almost always it is under criticism from someone for being too small, too large, too expensive, foolishly progressive, or hopelessly out of date. We who ride in the caboose are used to the rough by now, but it is nice now and then to have a bit of the smooth. Last year the train of industrial production rolled ahead swiftly and smoothly, and, except for a hot-box caused by strikes in copper mines, so did the caboose. As is brought out elsewhere in this issue, the outlook for 1956 is for more of the same.

A study of copper-base and silver-base alloys was made with the object of finding, if possible, useful alloys subject to dispersion hardening. These studies led to the discovery of several alloys showing considerable dispersion hardening, the most important of which, the alloys of copper with iron, nickel, cobalt and chromium silicides, have since been very ably reported by M. G. Corson.l This paper is offered as a few notes covering alloys other than those described by Corson and some further data on the silicide alloys. Copper Alloys For the purpose of making a rapid survey of copper alloys that might show useful dispersion-hardening phenomena, various alloys were prepared containing 3 per cent. of additional elements added in such proportion that possible compounds could be formed without an excess of either added element. These alloys in the form of rolled or forged pieces were quenched in water from a temperature of 871" C. (1800" F.) and subsequently aged at various lower temperatures for l-hr. periods. The comparison of the Rockwell hardness of the quenched alloys with the maximum hardness of the alloys after aging was used as a measure of the dispersion hardening. Table 1 shows the Rockwell "E" hardness 1/8-in. ball, 100-kg. load) of the quenched alloys, together with the maximum hardness resulting from aging. The reheating temperature given in this table is the aging temperature at which maximum hardness resulted from a l-hr. sojourn. From this table it may be observed that only the silicide alloys showed significant dispersion hardening. Of these, the only one not described by Corson is the Cu-Be-Si alloy. This alloy contained 1.35 per cent. beryllium and 1.78 per cent. silicon, which is approximately equivalent to 3 per cent. Be2Si. It had a yellow color and scaled much less than the other silicide alloys upon heating. It could be worked easily either hot or cold but hardened very rapidly on cold working. Very few data are available about production in this county. The amount mined was used locally, or shipped by river, until 1839 when the canal was completed to Dunnsburg. Only partial records for four years remain of canal shipments. Considerable coal was used locally by the iron works at Farrandsville for some years. Rail shipments started in 1861 and those shown are the estimated shipments of these mines as compared with the mines in other counties served by the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad, the total tonnages being given in the annual reports to the Auditor General. It is not likely that any coal used by the railroad is included in these figures. (Table 40.)

RICO, in the southwestern corner of Colorado, is one of the productive mining centers of the San Juan region, so-called because its waters drain into the river of that name, which is tributary to the Colorado. The San Juan region includes the counties of Ouray, Hinsdale, San Miguel, Dolores, San Juan and Montezuma. It is traversed by a network of picturesque mountain ranges on whose lofty summits there rests perpetual snow. The region is peculiarly rugged, and, in the early days of its development, tested to the full the hardihood of the adventurers who first explored its can ions 111 search for gold and silver. A prospecting party, guided by Jim Baker, scout and trapper, penetrated in 1861 this part of the territory of Kansas. At that time the country was in the possession of the Ute Indians. The structure of flotation reagents is important for their adsorption on mineral surfaces and thus for their flotation effectiveness. The influence of the structure of organic depressants on the flotation of fluorite and barite with anionic and cationic collectors was investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. In addition, adsorption, desorption, and electrokinetic results were employed to further elucidate the role and the correlation of the structural parameters for adsorption and the depressing effect. As hydrophilic reagents, different aliphatic and aromatic compounds capable of forming chelates with alkaline earth materials were used. For the depressing effect, the kind, number, and position of the polar groups in the molecule, as well as the structure of the reagent films play decisive roles.

X-ray analysis and single-crystal study have been utilized in recent years as a new means of following constitutional changes in alloys. If such transformations can be suppressed by rapid cooling, they can be followed at room temperature in a particularly convenient manner. In the following we shall consider changes in solubility and polymorphic transformations with particular reference to phenomena of the age-hardening type. Finally a thermodynamic viewpoint is developed for examining such transformations. Changes in Solubility 1. Determinations of solubility limits in the solid state which show decreasing solubility with falling temperature are made as follows: A series of alloys extending into the heterogeneous region is prepared and quenched fromas high a temperature as possible, whereupon their lattice parameters are determined. Then one or more alloys are quenched from temperatures at which they are heterogeneous and their lattice parameters likwwise determined. For the purpose of determining the parameter the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 has been very useful for it produces sharp films in a short time which can be accurately read. High-order reflections (interferences) from the object are recorded on a film which is placed exactly perpendicular to the X-ray beam. The specimen usually has the shape of a small round bar.l Fig. 2 shows a selection of such exposures of silver-rich Cu-Ag alloys, and Fig. 3 gives the measurements made from these films. Fig. 4 gives the solubility curve which results.2 This curve is shifted to lower concentrations than the curve that is obtained from metallographic or physical methods. No. 425, 12,000 words.)—This paper describes a research project undertaken to provide a means of studying the behavior of weighty structures such as mines, dams, foundations, etc., with models of the same material in the laboratory. The paper shows that in general it can be done. The underlying theory is explained, the apparatus which was developed and built to do this is described, and the results of laboratory experiments with sandstone mine structures are given. There is discussion of the accuracy of results with the present equipment, the model size necessary, and of the size and type of equipment necessary for the obtaining of results of practical value in the field. Milling and Concentration Ball Mill Studies, I. By A. W. Fahrenwald and Harold E. Lee. (Tech. Pub. No. 375. 25,000 words.)—This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental study of some of the numerous elements entering into ball mill grinding. All apparatus used was equipped with ball bearings. Every experiment was accompanied by a power measurement accurate to 0.005 hp. Quartz was used. Each element studied, such as ball load, was varied systematically. Power curves were obtained for the mill for three general sets of conditions; namely, (1) balls only (2) balls and quartz and (3) balls, quartz and water. For each general condition, power curves were obtained for various mill speeds, ball loads and ball sizes. For conditions 2 and 3, feed sizc and weight and pulp dilution also were studied as variables. The mill output, in grams of finished product per unit of time, was obtained for each test. THE role of solute segregation in the formation of cellular solidification substructures in tin and its dilute alloys is well-established, see, e.g., Ref. 1. Segregation has been shown to persist during cooling, enabling solidification structures to be studied from sections taken at some distance behind the interface. In the present work, a single crystal of commercial nickel, 99.965 pct, was examined in this way. The crystal was cut from the center of a rod given a single pass in an electron beam floating zone melter. Polished sections of a nickel specimen taken normal to the growth direction showed a very fine precipitate phase, the distribution of which varied over the section. The identification of the phase proved difficult because of the small amount present and the small particle size, about 1 p: but it was shown by probe microanalysis to contain only nickel and oxygen in detectable concentrations and was probably nickel oxide, NiO. Bulk analysis of the material before melting showed there to be only 3 to 4 ppm of oxygen present, thus demonstrating a very considerable segregation concentration effect. In some areas of the section the precipitate formed a discontinuous hexagonal network suggesting decoration of the cellular boundaries known to be present in the sample2 whereas in a restricted region the precipitate formed small clusters. Occasionally it could be seen that the clusters were at the intersections of an hexagonal network of cellular dimension. It was suggested3 that this was the result of enhanced segregation to the cell boundary intersections whereas general cell boundary segregation was insufficient to give a precipitate. Enhanced nodal segregation has since been demonstrated in a number of systems.1, 4-8 The development of a suitable electrolytic etching technique (perchloric acid 20 pct v/v; ethyl alcohol 70 pct; glycerol 10 pct; current below electropolishing plateau; 1 to 2 sec etching) suggested the association of the phase with regions of solute segregation (where ko < 1); in these regions anodic attack produced grooves or depressions. In a study of the variation of solidification substructures with degree of constitutional supercooling, Biloni et a1.&apos; appear to have used standard growth conditions and varied the solute concentration. It was possible in the present nickel crystal to observe a continuous range of substructures varying with degree of supercooling across a single section as shown in Fig. 1. Growth rate, 13 mm per min, and temperature gradient were essentially constant; the variation in structure is thought to be due to a radial gradient in solute concentration ahead of the solid interface. The liquid at the interface is likely to have been richer in solute toward the periphery of the zone, the result of curvature of this interface. The type of substructure was seen to vary with increasing constitutional supercooling as follows: a) region free of precipitate. top left, Fig. 1: 6) region of nodal precipitates which became arranged in hexagons on passing from the center of the rod: c) irregular hexagonal cells with incomplete boundary precipitation; d) regular hexagonal cells of decreasing size with complete boundary precipitation. Fig. 2 shows the transition from stage 6 and Fig. 3 shows the structure in stage d. Within stage 0, the range of conditions over which irregularly positioned nodes occur appears to be small and the nodes are soon recognizable as taking up positions at the intersections of an hexagonal network as the supercooling increases.

THE term mountain bump describes the sudden rupture of one or more coal pillars under excessive stress. These bursts occur with varying degrees of violence and sometimes include adjacent strata, especially the bottom rock. Many failures do not develop enough violence to be dangerous and are regarded as an aid to coal production, but severe occurrences are accompanied by tons of flying coal, dense clouds of dust, and excessive gas emission. Such bursts sometimes throw heavy machinery several feet. Major factors to be considered in the problem are the nature of the strata above and below the seam and the depth of cover. Bumps are classified as to their nature, extent of damage, and point of occurrence, e. g., face bump, coal bump, high side bump, low side pavement bump, and district bump.
