AEROFLOAT 25 is a complex mixture of free cresylic acid with aryl substituted dithiophosphoric acids, sulphides, disulphides, etc. Its complete composition has not been published by the makers or patentees. It is prepared1 by the reaction between phosphorus pentasulphide and carefully selected cresylic acid. We have been informed that this acid contains no phenol and very little cresol, and that it is rich in the higher alkyl phenols, particularly the xylenols. The reaction between a phenol ROH and phosphorus pentasulphide may produce compounds of the following type:2 [ ] Except for the simplest type, the thiophenols (ii), the boiling points of these compounds lie above 300" C. The amounts of the thianthren compounds formed from the five xylenols (if all these are present) will vary according to the position of the substituents. In an attempt to ascertain something of the nature of the reagent, fractional distillation under atmospheric pressure was undertaken. In the death of Major A. B. desaulles at South Bethlehem, Pa., on Dec. 24, 1917, the Institute lost a valued and esteemed member, one of the last few of those who, in May, 1871, at Wilkes-Barre, attended the first meeting of the Institute, in response to a call that had been issued by R. P. Rothwell, Eckley B. Coxe, and Martin Coryell. Major desaulles was born Jan. 8, 1840, at New Orleans, and was the son of Louis and Armidc Longer desaulles, each of French descent. As a boy he was privately tutored in the South, and then schooled in New England to enter the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was graduated with honors in the class of '59. Following his graduation he studied in France and Germany for two years, returning to New Orleans in 1861 to enter the Confederate Army, in which he served with distinction as an engineer throughout the Civil War, rising to the rank of Major and the command of his Corps. After the close of the war he pursued his studies abroad for another year, returning to New York in April, 1866, when he became engineer for the New York & Schuylkill Coal Company, and remained at its plant near Wilkes-Barre until October, 1871, when it was sold to the Philadelphia & Reading Coal and Iron Company. He then returned to New York where for several years he was engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1869, he married Catharine M. Heckscher, daughter of Charles Heckscher of New York City. Mrs. desaulles survives him. In 1876, Major desaulles became superintendent of the Dunbar Furnace Company in Fayette County, Pa., with which company he remained until 1883. As a feature of the Pittsburgh meeting in May, 1879, Major and Mrs. desaulles entertained the members of the Institute at dinner at Dunbar on the occasion of the Institute's visit to Dun-bar furnace. In 1883, he took up the formation of the Oliphant Furnace Company in that county, of which he became and remained the head for five years. He was then called to the superintendency of the New Jersey Zinc Company at South Bethlehem, Pa., in which position he remained until his retirement,from active service in 1911, maintaining, however, hi.; keen interest in the metallurgy and smelting of zinc, in collaboration with his son Charles, a member of the Institute and a Director of the American Smelting and Refining Company. From 1888, until his death, he resided in South Bethlehem, a prominent and highly respected citizen of that progressive and stirring community. Major desaulles was a member of the Protestant Espicopal Church, and at the time of his death was a vestryman of the Church of the Nativity at South Bethlehem. He was president of the Men's Club of the Church of the Nativity. His kindly nature led him to take an active interest in the promotion of healthful sports among young men. He was ever active in all things pertaining to the general welfare and uplift of his fellowmen. In his death the profession has lost a distinguished engineer and mctallurgist and our country a patriotic able citi-zen and man of affairs—one greatly beloved by those whom he honored with his friendship, and respected and looked up to by all who were privileged to know him.

The following letter has been received from the Chairman of the United States Shipping Board. August 1, 1918. American Institute of Mining Engineers, New York, N. Y. GENTLEMEN: I am going to call upon your organization for some teamwork. The time has come for Americans everywhere to put themselves solidly behind American ships. Our railroads must no longer stop at the ocean. We are building an American merchant fleet of twenty-five million tons-three thousand ships. We are backing modern ships with modern port facilities, establishing our bunkering stations all over the globe and will operate with American railroad efficiency. We will carry American cargoes at rates corresponding to our railroad rates-the cheapest in the world. Fast American passenger-and-cargo liners will run regularly to every port in Latin America, the Orient, Africa, Australia. Are you taking steps to use these ships to increase your own prosperity? Do you realize that American products of factory, farm and mine can be delivered to customers in foreign countries on terms which will build lasting trade? Do you realize the possibilities for bringing hack raw materials to extend your products and trade? We must all take off our coats and work to bring these American ships home to the people of every American interest and community. The manufacturer must think of customers in Latin America as being as accessible as those in the next state. The farmer must visualize ships carrying his wheat, cotton, breeding animals, dairy products and fruit to new world markets. The American boy must think of ships and foreign countries when he chooses a calling.

THE following paper aims to make a full explanation of the phenomena of rock jointing: It may be unnecessary to give any general description of what are termed joints in rocks, but Professor Geikie's clear and faithful generalizations are so illuminating that no excuse need be given. for introducing the following and other quotations into this paper "Almost all rocks are traversed by vertical or highly inclined divisional planes termed joints. These have been regarded as due in some way to contraction during consolidation (fissures of retreat) ; and this is no doubt their origin in innumerable cases. But, on the other hand, their frequent regularity and persistence across materials of very varying texture suggest rather the effects of internal pressure and movement within the crust." 1 General Explanation.-In this paper I show that the phenomenon of jointing may to a large extent be accounted for by the pressure of the water contained in the pores of the rock. To understand this, each constituent grain of the porous material may be considered to be separately compressed by the water which submerges it. As all the grains are held together by cohesion, the whole mass is contracted by this pressure. In an indefinitely extended mass, however, there must be a limit to the possible contraction without rupture, because the material is restrained from moving freely by other material around its boundaries. The mass of rock thus becomes broken up. This phenomenon is known as '" shrinkage " jointing. The term " shrinkage " is an apt one, if it be understood that the shrinkage of the rock is often brought about by change of stress. Stresses.-The compressive component of water stress on the individual grains is evidently the same as that of the water with which it is in contact. This is so, both before and after the jointing is formed. Before the jointing is formed there is, however, a tensile stress in one or more directions which keeps the material from contracting. .

SILVER-cadmium near the composition AgCd shows three equilibrium phases. As with 13 brass, the high temperature phase is disordered body-centered cubic (8) and the low temperature phase has the ordered CsCl structure . However, there is an intermediate temperature phase which is hexagonal close-packed ((). In a recent paper, Speich and Mack' report on a study of the Ag-Cd eutectoid near the AgCd composition. Unfortunately, the phase diagram upon which they base some of their conclusions is incorrect. That diagram is taken from the Metals Handbook' and the error is that the 0 and ( phases have been interchanged. The Handbook gives the low temperature phase as hexagonal (designated 5) and the intermediate temperature phase as cubic ordered (designated . The error may be typographical or it may be one of confusion resulting from the use of 5, ,, and 0 for the intermediate phase in various papers. A careful search of the literature reveals that a number of authors have indicated the correct relative positions of the 13, 5, and 0 phases. The comprehensive work of Fraenkel and Wolf clearly stated that the high and the low temperature phases are either identical or are very similar. olander,' on the basis of electrochemical measurements, showed that the 13 phase is disordered and the 1 phase (designated 8" in his paper and in refs. 3 and 5) is ordered. Further work by Durrant5 using thermal and metallographic analyses provided a more precise phase diagram. A summary of these works was given by Hansen6 and shows the correct relative positions of the phases. Owen, Rogers, and Guthrie7 located correctly the upper two phases by X-ray diffraction. Although cresylic acids have been standard frothers in flotation for many years, there has been little discussion of their nature in the metallurgical literature. Aside from references in the patent literature, the paper by Landolt, Hill, and Lowyl in 1930, which resented a study of the frothing and collecting properties of some of the constituents of crude cresylic acids, represents the only contribution of this type. The close froth control required in the delicate selective separations of present-day flotation operations have required the flotation metallurgist to choose his frothers with care, and have caused him to require of the manufacturer a closely controlled, uniform product. A background of knowledge of the chemical composition and physical and chemical properties of the frothers, by which their action may be correlated, should aid in selecting frothers for particular flotation requirements. Further, the recent almost complete replacement in flotation of coal-tar cresylic acids by those derived from petroleum makes it especially desirable to review the flotation behavior of the acids from the old and the new sources. In view of these facts the Milling Methods Committee of the A.I.M.E. suggested to the Oronite Chemical Co. of San Francisco the preparation of a paper on the subject, and this paper has accordingly been prepared as a contribution by the California Research Corporation, the research affiliate of the Oronite Chemical Co. The discussion is from the following aspects: (I) constitution and properties; (2) sources; (3) comparison of coal-tar and petroleum cresylic acids; (4) characteristics as frothers, with particular reference to the effect of the substitution of petroleum acids for coal-tar acids. Constitution and Properties Cresylic acids are commonly regarded as mixtures of orthocresol, metacresol and paracresol. This was, indeed, the former meaning of the term, but in recent years it has been loosely applied to any mixture of alkyl phenols boiling above 190°C.; that is, excluding only phenol itself. This means that cresylic acids, as they are known today, may consist of mixtures, not only of the three isomeric cresols, but of six xylenols and of a variety of higher boiling homologues. Generically the constituents of cresylic acids are alkyl phenols, and they are often so designated in the literature to avoid the more indefinite term, "cresylic acids." They form an homologous series starting with phenol, which has the familiar benzene ring, with an hydroxyl group in place of one of the hydrogen atoms. The series of alkyl phenols is formed by the substitution of alkyl side chains, such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, etc., for hydrogen atoms of the benzene ring of phenol. Some

HISTORY IT is not known when kaolin mining was first begun in North Carolina. Evidence, in the form of excavations and primitive tools, indicates that some of the deposits were worked in prehistoric times. It has been suggested that the prehistoric mining was for mica, but the workings were all in altered or partly altered pegmatite material and the dumps do not represent the amount of material removed. Some of the early openings may have been made in search of kaolin or semi-kaolinized feldspar which was sold to English1 traders along the coast and used in some of the early English porcelains. In 1944,2 an application was made for an English patent to produce porcelain from an earthy mixture obtained from the Cherokee Nation in North America. It is well established, however, that the occurrence of kaolin in western North Carolina was known in England by 1767. In that year, Josiah Wedgewood sent T. Griffiths3,4 to what is now Macon County, North Carolina, to secure a supply of kaolin for use in England. Griffiths diary, now in Etruria Museum, Stokes-on-Trent, contains a most interesting account of his experience. Kaolin was discovered at St. Austell, England, shortly after the voyage of Griffiths, which probably accounts for the lack of further interest in American kaolin. Between 1767 and 1888, there are no records of kaolin mining in North Carolina. In the latter year, however, mining was begun near Webster, Jackson County, and, in the intervening period, has become an important industry. For some 20 years, kaolin mining was carried on chiefly in Jackson, Macon, and Swain Counties. About 1904, it was begun in the Spruce Pine district and for the past 20 years most of the kaolin mined in the State has come from Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties. DISTRIBUTION The kaolins of North Carolina are limited in occurrence to the Piedmont Plateau and Appalachian Mountain area of the State. While kaolins are widespread in the Piedmont Plateau, having been prospected for in Rutherford, Cleveland, Gaston, Granville, Lincoln, Catawba, Iredell, Richmond, Moore, Randolph, and Montgomery Counties, the production from that area has never been important. The known deposits of commercial importance are limited entirely to the mountain area of the State. While kaolins occur widely distributed throughout the mountain area and have been prospected for in many counties of that area, commercial production has come chiefly from two districts. One of these includes Jackson, Macon, Swain, and Haywood Counties. The other includes Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties. After showing continued and very satisfactory progress until the close of 1931, the oil industry of the Soviet, Union experienced very great difficulties, and since 1932 has not only failed to complete its assigned quotas but has fallen farther and farther behind them, and in fact during 1932 and 1933 Russian production has been below production in 1931. In 1934 the total crude oil production of 169,200,000 bbl. exceeded that of the former peak year, 1931, when 156,100,000 bbl. were produced. The production during 1934 amounted to 78.65 per cent of the plan. The failure to complete the plan has been due to the inability of the oil trusts to develop new fields; the fields that have been producing since 1917 still account for between 75 to 80 per cent of total production. The failure of the Soviet Government to develop new fields has been due to unsatisfactory organization of the geological work, to the extremely slow drilling of wells and their exploitation, and to the very much delayed development of the few areas that have been discovered. The official overestimation of the proven reserves of the country has undoubtedly been an important factor in giving the Soviet industry too much confidence when actually such reserves have been small. The official Soviet estimate of proven reserves of Russia is now placed at 21,000,000,000, bbl., while in fact such reserves, if estimated on a conservative basis, do not exceed 4,200,000,000 bbl., as will be shown later in this review. The refinery branch of the industry also showed unsatisfactory results with a recovery of gasoline, both straight-run and cracked, of only some 16 per cent of the total runs to stills. In fact, the showing of the refineries has been so unsatisfactory that the exports of gasoline have been greatly curtailed from 1933 to 1934, dropping to 10,000,000 bbl. in 1934 from 12,230,000 bbl. in 1933. With the indicated increase in domestic demand, together with but slightly increased refining capacity, the volume of available gasoline for export probably will be reduced to about 6,000,000 bbl. during 1935. CLEANING fine coal in jigs is not new in Europe, where the feldspar jig is being used almost exclusively for this purpose. A feldspar jig operates with an artificial bed made up generally of feldspar or other hard rock material. Dimensions and specific gravity of this material must be of suitable values for good bedding qualities. For good efficiency, the size should range between 1x2 in. and 2x2x1/2 in. thick.

The materials used for pump construction vary according to the nature of the solution handled. The pump materials in use are the result of extended experiment and are all giving satisfactory results. Research is still in progress, particularly with stainless steel and rubber lining, both of which show considerable promise. Following are the materials used: For tank-room acid, carrying about 100 grams per liter free sulphuric acid, hard lead is used. Stainless steel is under investigation. Duriron is satisfactory, but requires very careful handling to prevent mechanical breakage. For pulps containing low acid (10 grams per liter), abrasive solids, ferric iron, copper, etc. pumps are made of hard lead. Stainless steel is satisfactory. For pulps containing no acid but carrying abrasive materials and copper, bronze is used. Pulps containing acid (10 grams per liter), copper, iron and nonabra-sive solids require lead pumps. Rubber linings are under investigation. Clear neutral solutions containing copper are handled in bronze pumps; neutral solutions free of copper, acid, abrasive material, etc., in iron or bronze. The hard lead used contains 13 per cent antimony. The stainless steel has the following analysis: Cr, 20.0 per cent; Ni, 7.0; C, 0.25; W, 4.0; Cu, 2.0.

Equilibrium CO2 /CO ratios of a gas phase coexisting with selected oxide phase assemblages of the system CaO-"Fe0"-SiOz and vnetallic iron have been determined at 1080°C. The data obtained are used to calculate activity-conzposition relations for metasili-cute, orthosilicate, and CaO- "FeO" solid solutions, and to determine a new value for the free energy of formation of C&S&0,. The metasilicate solution is practically ideal, whereas large deviations from ideality exist in the othe,r two solid solutions. BECAUSE of the geochemical and metallurgical importance of the oxides CaO, "FeO", and SiOz, the system CaO-"FeO"-SiO2 has been the subject of several experimental studies during the past 30 years. Following the delineation of phase relations at liquidus temperatures by a group of investigators at the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington in 1933,1 Chipman and associates in the early forties2,3 determined activities of FeO in liquids of this system. Since that time, many attempts have been made to interpret the data of Chipman et al. in terms of the constitution of the silicate liquids and the interaction parameters among the various constituents of the system (see for instance papers by Richardson4 and by Flood and coworkers5). One of the assumptions made in some of these interpretations4 is that the binary silicate systems CaSiO3-FeSiO3 and CazSi04-Fe2SiO4 mix ideally in the solid state. The objective of the present study is to provide experimental data on activity-com position relations in solid solutions of the system CaO-"FeO"-SiO2. Such data will contribute toward an understanding of the thermodynamics of silicate solid-solution phases in general, and will serve specifically to confirm or refute some of the assumptions made in interpreting liquid slag behavior. PREVIOUS WORK Phase relations in the system CaO-"FeO"-SiO2 in contact with metallic iron were determined by Bowen, Schairer, and Posnjak,1 and additional phase-equilibrium data for this system have been presented by Allen and snow.' A reproduction of the most up-to-date phase diagram for this system is shown in Fig. 1.7'8 Of particular interest in the present investigation are the relations among the various crystalline phases slightly below the lowest solidus temperature in the system, as shown in Fig. 2. Existing measurements for the steady-state permeation of hydrogen in a iron above 100°C have been examined for contribution of determinate errors. The analysis leads to a recommended equation for the permeability of hydrogen in a iron: o= (2.9 ±0.5) x 10-3 exp - (8400 ± 400)/RT cu cm (ntp H2) cm-1 sec-1 atm-1/2 THE permeability of a iron to hydrogen has been the subject of numerous investigations over the past 40 years, and at present there are thirteen sets of published results for the rate of steady-state permeation of hydrogen in a iron above 100°C. The numerical values in each set of results are entirely self-consis-tent, but the spread among the sets is too large to be attributed solely to experimental error, i.e., to error other than in the specimen itself. Several reasons have been advanced to explain the disparities, but to date the relative importance of experimental inaccuracy to the spread remains uncertain. The purpose of this report is to examine in detail the sources of determinate errors inherent in the experiments and to assess as far as possible the contribution of the errors to the results. The ultimate goal is the selection of values for the permeability and heat of permeation most nearly representative of hydrogen in a iron. The analysis is limited to those experiments in which the permeation rate was observed at steady state—a condition in which traps for hydrogen within the metal are filled to a fixed level15 so that the trapping mechanism is not reflected in the rate of passage of the gas. Furthermore only data are examined in which surface processes are judged to have little or no influence on the flow. It is hoped with these restrictions to obtain values of the permeability and the heat of permeation which will be as closely related as possible to the mechanism of lattice diffusion. I) DEFINITION OF TERMS; UNITS In this report the data for permeation are given in terms of a coefficient oj permeability, ?, which is defined by the equation: jt=?A/?x{p1/2-po1/2) [1] where jt is the total flow of gas normal to the surface of a membrane of planar geometry, e.g., a disc, of area A and thickness ?x; pi and po are the pressures in the input and output sides, respectively. For flow radial to the walls of a membrane of cylindrical geometry, e.g., a tube, the corresponding equation is: where 1 is the length of the cylinder, and ri and ro are the inner and outer radii, respectively. The flux normal to the surface is given by Fick's law: j= -D(dc/dx) [3] At steady state the concentration gradient will be constant, and integration of Eq. [3] gives for the total flow through a disc of area A and thickness Ax: h =-DA(co - ci) [4] where c, and ci are the concentrations of solute at the output and input surfaces, respectively. When surface control is absent, co and ci are given by Sievert's law c = Kp1/2, and substitution therewith into Eq. [4] gives directly Eq. [I] where ? = DK. Integration of Fick's Eq. [3] in cylindrical coordinates will give Eq. [2] where again ? = DK and is thus shown to be independent of geometry (provided that surface control is negligible). The coefficient of permeability, or simply the permeability,* must be expressed in proper units. In *The term permeability will refer in this report always to the coefficient defined above; permeation will be used to specify the general phenomenon of gas passage through a membrane. this report ? will be expressed in the units of cu cm (ntp H2) cm-1 sec-1 atm-1/2. The variations of D and K with temperature are given by D = Do exp(-Ea/RT) and K = KO exp(-?Hs/RT) where E, is the activation energy for diffusion and AH, the heat of solution, each usually expressed in calories per mole of solute. The variation of permeability with temperature will thus be given (for conditions where surface control is negligible) by ? = ?o exp(-?Hp/RT) where ?0 = DoKo and ?Hp = Ea + ?Hs. The units of ?0 are the same as those of 6, and??Hp will be expressed in calories per mole H. 11) SUMMARY OF PERMEABILITY RESULTS Table I gives the values reported to date for the permeability of H2 in a iron in terms of ?o and ?Hp. Except where noted the parameters listed were taken directly from the numbers reported by the various investigators with only a change in units. The temperature limits within which the listed ?o and ?Hp hold are given in column 7; the limits marked in parentheses in this column indicate the entire temperature range covered in each investigation. The listed values of ?o and ?Hp are those giving a linear plot of ln? against T-1 at the higher temperatures in each set of measurements, and thus presumably represent the case for which surface control was negligible. The basic research for this study was conducted by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories in 1974. The high-sulfur content of coal threatens to erode its competitive position in the future. The impact of sulfur removal on final costs of eastern interior coal lies at the very heart of this market analysis. An extensive market survey was conducted that considered both traditional coal markets as well as anticipated future markets. Competition for coal from this province considers low-sulfur Western coal, nu- clear power, international oil and coal trade, as well as Appalachian coal producers. Based on projections of future energy consumption under several scenarios, a comprehensive market forecast for eastern interior coal was made to 2040. The study upon which this paper is based was completed by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1974. It is but part of an overall effort by the Corps to evaluate the costs and benefits to the nation of waterway improvements. This study is primarily concerned with future coal markets for production from those counties near the Wabash River in the heart of the Eastern Interior Province. An objective here is to consider a most pessimistic energy (and hence, coal) demand for planning purposes.

The c/laracterzstics of cube-oriented nuclei ard other matrix grains that are associated with secondary, recrystallization to the cube texture in high-purity silicon iron were investigated by me-tallographic and X-ray methods. The results show that the structure consists of relatively perfect grains of average diameter between one and two times the sheet thickness ad that the texture has a moderately strong (110) [001] component and a weak (100) [001] component. The results also indicate that matrix stability results from the two-dimensional nuture of the graitzs and that cube-orzented nuclei are neither more Perfect nor larger grains than other matrix grains but have a preferred [001] direction in the rolling direction and have a more effective driving force for growth than other grains because of a low (100) surface energy. THE structures and textures of fine-grained rnatrices determine to a large extent the kinds of secondary recrystallization textures that form on annealing. The understanding of secondary recrystallization processes therefore depends on adequate information about the initial matrices. Matrices usually have three characteristics: 1) they consist of fine-grained primary recrystallization structures, 2) the fine-grained structures are stable toward normal grain growth, and 3) they contain secondary recrystallization nuclei. Stability toward normal grain growth may be due to either a strong single orientation texture (texture inhibition)' or a dispersed second phase (dispersed phase inhibition).2"4 If normal grain growth is not inhibited by either of these two factors, it nevertheless stops when the average grain size is between one and two times the sheet thick- ness.5 This thickness effect satisfies one of the characteristics of a matrix for secondary recrystallization. Its importance in the development of the cube texture in high-purity silicon iron by secondary recrystallization was pointed out by the authors in a recent paper on tertiary recrystallization7 and will be discussed further in the present paper. Assmus, Detert, and he8 have provided some information on a matrix for secondary recrystallization to the cube texture in silicon iron. They found a (110)[001] or Goss texture with enough spread about the rolling direction to include a small amount of the (100)[00l] orientation. The distribution of the [00l] directions was strongest parallel to the rolling direction for both (100) primaries and cube secondaries. These authors found no correlation between size of a matrix grain and orientation and concluded that some property other than size must be the distinguishing characteristic of the cube-oriented nucleus. The study was undertaken to investigate the effect in the charge to a blast furnace of zinc and alkali contents, which tend to form accretions and scaffolds in the upper sections of the furnace. Commercial iron oxide pellets were reduced in a CO:N2, 40:60 gas mixture in a 5-cm by 5-m counter-current reactor (Rist-type apparatus) designed to simulate blast-furnace conditions. Pellets from a commercial magnetite concentrate were prepared in the laboratory with zinc (1% ZnO) and alkali (1% KOH) additions to the concentrate. Reducibility, crushing strength and swelling tests were carried out and the results compared with test data from pellets prepared without additions. The results indicated normal behaviour for those pellets containing zinc, whereas those containing alkali swelled catastrophically under the same reducing conditions.

Many engineering functions such as surface metering work and laboratory compressibility check points involve the use of liquid densities of light hydrocarbon mixtures at various pressures and temperatures. However, at the present time, no simple reliable method exists for determining density variation, particularly if the composition of the liquid is unknown. Consequently, a study was undertaken to develop and present a simple and accurate method of predicting density variation of a light hydrocarbon liquid with pressure and temperature, knowing only the density of the liquid at some condition. The experimental liquid compressibility data from API Project 37 by Sage and Lacey' have been considered to be accurate within 0.5 per cent and cover a wide range of pressure (14.7 to 10,000 psia), temperature (100" to 400°F) and molecular weight (up to 150). From these data, a set of liquid density curves, which relate density to pressure, temperature and molecular weight, was developed. These curves make it possible to predict density variation with pressure and temperature. Compared to extensive laboratory compressibility data on a complex, light hydrocarbon liquid, the use of the liquid density curves resulted in an average error of less than 0.5 per cent. Based on the results of this analysis, it is concluded that the set of liquid density curves developed from the data of Sage and Lacey provides an accurate and simple method for predicting the density variation of light hydrocarbon liquids when the density at some condition is known. These curves should be very helpful in many engineering calculations, particularly in the surface metering of light hydrocarbon liquids. INTRODUCTION Many situations arise in field and engineering laboratory work, such as reservoir engineering studies, check of experimentally determined laboratory data and orifice flow-meter formulas, where liquid density factors at various pressure-temperature conditions are required. Also, the need for accurate light hydrocarbon liquid information has become more important with the advent of miscible-type displacements for secondary recovery purposes in oilfield operations. Several reliable methods are available1 - "or determining the density of liquid hydrocarbons if the composition of the liquid is known. However, there is a definite lack of methods for accurately determining the variation of density when the composition of the liquid is unknown. The purpose of this study is to review the various methods for determining hydrocarbon liquid densities and to develop a simple and reliable method of determining variation in density of light hydrocarbon liquids with pressure and temperature when the compositio~n of the liquid is unknown. METHODS FOR DETERMINING DENSITY OF LIQUIDS OF KNOWN COMPOSITION Sage, Lacey and Hicks' have proposed a method to predict the density of light liquid hydrocarbons by using partial molal volumes. Data are available on experimentally developed partial liquid volumes of hydrocarbons over a rather limited range of temperature, pressure and composition. The partial mold volume method has proved satisfactory for determining the density of some hydrocarbon liquids when the composition is known. Within the range covered in the Sage, Lacey and Hicks1 data, the results agree within about 3 per cent of the experimental values. Hanson mentions the limitation of this method to a composition range of approximately 10 per cent by weight of methane, which will not allow this correction to cover most low molecular weight-light hydrocarbon liquids. Standing and Katz2 studied data on light hydrocarbon-liquid systems containing methane and ethane at high temperature and pressure and have presented a method for determining liquid densities, assuming additive volumes for all components less volatile than ethane and using apparent densities for methane and ethane. The compressibility and thermal-expansion curves used by Standing are based on assumptions that compressibility of a hydrocarbon liquid at temperatures below 300°F is a function of the liquid density at 60°F and that thermal expansion of the liquid is affected little by pressure. The information required to use this technique with an example problem is furnished by Standing.' Hanson eports an average error of - 0.5 per cent using the method of apparent densities in calculating liquid densities of several volatile hydrocarbon mixtures. The state of stress in the region where core discing initiates has been investigated through the use of three-dimensional photoelastic models and the results of this study have been compared with those of a previous investigation of rock models. This comparison showed that discing initiates at a point of maximum shear stress, but that the magnitude of the shear stress, as determined photoelastically, is much larger than the shear strength of the rock as deter-mined from conventional triaxial testing. Moreover the shear stress required to produce discing is not constant, but depends on the applied stress field. Possible explanations for these effects are included in this article. In both exploration core drilling and overcore drilling to determine the stress in rock, occasional sections of the core obtained are broken into a series of discs.I* This discing phenomenon has been investigated in the laboratory to ascertain the state of stress required to produce it. The objective of the study was to obtain information that would make it possible to approximate the state of stress in subsurface rock from which disced cores are obtained. Referred to as the discing test, this laboratory study was conducted to determine the applied axial and radial loads required to produce discing in cylinders of rock from several sources. The dimensions of these cylinders are given in Fig. 1. Discing was produced by first applying an axial load to the cylinder and then diamond drilling the core along its axis. The radial load was then incrementally increased until discing initiated. The discs fractured or ruptured* on surfaces approximately normal to the axis of the core (planes A, B, C, D, E, Fig. 2). In many instances, the bottommost disc fractured before the drill had advanced past the points F and F', cre- ating a mush room-shaped fracture surface FEF'. Alternatively, it was also found that the same shaped fracture surface could be created by first drilling in an unloaded core to some point, say F and F', and then triaxially loading the core until fracture occurred on the plane FEF'. Jaeger and cook4 produced similar fracture surfaces in specimens subjected only to a radial biaxial load. From these laboratory studies and observations made in the field, it can be inferred that fracture or rupture initiates in the proximity of the lowest point in the kerf area, (at F and F', Fig. 2) and that the fracture or rupture surface progresses inward from this point. The experiments described above, however, do not provide any information as to the state of stress at the point at which fracture or rupture initiates. In the investigation discussed in the following sections, a three-dimensional photoelastic analysis was conducted to determine the stress distribution in the proximity of the kerf area of a triaxially loaded plastic (epoxy) cylinder containing a short section of core.

The mechanism, of the decrease in transition temperature of Nb3Sn was studied. Presintered Nb3Sn powder compacts were heated in a dynamic vacuum at elevated temperatures. Loss of tin resulted from these heat treatments and transition temperature as a function of tin loss was discontinuous at a critical value of tin loss. In general, decreases in transition temperature were correlated with deviations from AS a class, the A15 structure-type (also known as Cr3O or ß W) compounds have the highest superconducting transition temperatures.' In this class are stoichiometry and presence of vacancies in niobium sites. The effect of vacancy distribution on the physical properties of Nh3Sn is considered. It is concluded that the close-packed atomic A chain in the A3B A15 structure must be preserved both in coutinuity and direction if good superconducting properties are to he obtained. tempting to associate these high transition temperatures with the most unique crystallographic feature of the A3B structure: the three close-packed, orthogonal chains of A atoms.'0"' There are at least three principal mechanisms by which the perfection of these "A-atom chains" could be interrupted: changing stoichiometry, inducing disorder, or introducing vacancies.
