THE nature and comparative features of anthracite and bituminous coals have been discussed by the writer in two previous papers.1 Although this paper is offered as a further contribution to the subject, it seems desirable at the outset to repeat some of the descriptive matter of the early works in order to show the actual connection between various constituents of both coals and the new photomicrographs and other physical and chemical properties.

To control the slag in an iron blast furnace is to control the quality of the pig iron produced (and to a certain extent the tonnage), and to control the whole operation of the furnace itself, including a large part of the cost of production. The character of the slag is the determining factor in the character of the pig iron as to the controllable limits of sulfur, silicon, and, to a certain extent, the manganese; it has an influence on the proportions of combined and graphitic carbons.

In the author's experience and contact with engineering students the old form of recitations had grown into the lecture system in which the student was a passive receiver of digested material. Later, the tutorial system was developed because it was felt that the lecture system was breaking down. The student was too passive and was simply trying to absorb what was given him. The seminary method was then introduced and for the particular field the author believes that there is no better method, but that for 20 years he has been trying to change the attitude of the student in certain courses from a passive, almost noncommittal, to an active participation, to change him from a receiver to a doer. The student cannot look over the whole field. That must be presented by the instructor in charge. A topic such as structure or glaciation is taken up and from that standpoint are argued all the geologic problems that might confront the engineer. Problems relating to dams and foundations, and structures, tunnels and excavations, are particularly adaptable to the method. Usually, however, the problem comes to the engineer in more complicated form. By virtue of the character of the material the same topic cannot be assigned to the entire class. Different phases of the topic must be assigned. The greatest difficulty in after life comes in that the student cannot analyze the problem and has not the ability to see that there is a problem. He has had little or no training in the gathering of material and very little training in the arrangement of a report. Consequently, selecting different problems, putting them before small groups, and then starting the student on the way to make the knowledge of his particular topic an integral part of his own mentality, is something that will fix that part of the work firmly in his mind. Professor Brown has insisted on an introductory step in a great many classes, in that without the student knowning very much more than the general outline of the topic or problem, he is made in inductive fashion to take up the entire problem, look it over, and prepare an outline as far as he can; in other words, to expose the problem to his own mind. This preliminary outline is discussed with the student and if the arrangement or logic, with regard to the end in view, are faulty, he is shown where

THERE is little quantitative information available concerning the effect of applied stress, in both the elastic and plastic ranges, on diffusion kinetics. Accordingly, a program has been undertaken to determine the rate of self-diffusion in high purity iron, with the specimens subjected to stress during the course of diffusion. Results are reported here for body-centered cubic iron at a diffusion temperature of 890°C. The iron used was 99.97 pct Fe, the principal impurities being 0.002 pct C, 0.008 pct 0, and 0.02 pct Si. The surface-decrease method of self-diffusion analysis was employed, and Fe55 Mn x-radiation, 2.9 years half-life) was the tracer element. Details of specimen preparation and equipment are given elsewhere.' Disks of the high purity iron, % in. diam x 1/4 in. thick, were annealed at 890°C for 18 hr in dry hydrogen to produce large grains of a ferrite. The faces of the disks were then surface ground, and possible grinding stresses were relieved by annealing at 890 °C for 45 min in vacuum. A layer of radioactive iron 0.00186 cm thick was electroplated on one face of each disk. The self-diffusion coefficient was calculated from the ratio of the radiation intensities emanating from each of these faces, as measured before and after diffusion.' The heating was carried out in a vacuum furnace (10-5 mm Hg) controlled to ±1.5°C. The specimens were loaded in compression between two quartz disks during the diffusion runs by means of a lever system operating through a vacuum seal. Thus one quartz disk was pressed directly against the radioactive face of the specimen, minimizing the vapor loss of radioactive iron. Steady-state creep occurred in all instances where permanent deformation could be detected, but the specimens did not exhibit appreciable transverse barreling until natural strains of 0.2 to 0.3 were attained. Essentially, the diffusion took place under uniaxial stress. THE observations presented in this paper were recorded during a study of the spheroidizing process. Spheroidization of cementite in steel is either brought about to develop a set of desirable mechanical properties or is an incidental result of mechanical and heat-treating manipulations. Physical properties of steel are materially influenced by the state of the cementite. Conversion of cementite from the lamellar to the spheroidal state is usually accom-panied by a decrease of hardness and of strength and by an increase in ductility. The spheroidized structure is usually considered as an ultimate step in the process of the softening of steel. The unorthodox hardening of a 3.5 per cent Ni steel (SAE No. 2330) after a heat-treatment that previously proved entirely suitable for a complete spheroidization of cementite in carbon steels led to the observa-tions that constitute the subject of the present paper.

The effects of several additives upon the reduction characteristics of hydrogen-reduced ferrous formate are described. The various additives inhibit sintering of the reduced iron particles by apparently different mechanisms. The magnetic properties of the low density compacts produced from the resulting ultra-fine iron powders were improved markedly. THE permanent magnetic characteristics of ultra-fine iron powder prepared by various means have been a subject of considerable interest and experimentation in the past few years. When such particles are small enough to show single domain behavior, they possess' 1—permanent saturation magnetization, and 2—high coercive force. In the absence of domain boundaries, the only magnetization changes in a particle occur through spin rotation which is opposed by relatively large anisotropy forces. With decreasing particle size, the coercive force tends to increase to a maximum and then decrease because of the instability in magnetization associated with thermal fluctuations. Kittel' has calculated the critical diameter at which a spherical particle of iron can no longer sustain domain boundaries or walls to be approximately 1.5x10-' cm. Stoner and Wohlfarthr in England and Neel4,6 in France have shown from purely theoretical calculations that the high coercive force expected from single domain particles is dependent upon crystal anisotropy, shape anisotropy, or strain anisotropy contributions. Further work by Weil, Bertaut,' and many others has contributed much to the understanding of fine particle theory. Neel and Meikeljohn" have demonstrated that a decrease in particle size below a critical value of approximately 160A leads to a quite rapid decrease in coercive force because of the prevention of stable magnetization by thermal agitation. Lih1, working with powders prepared by the reduction of formate and oxalate salts of iron, has shown the marked influence of powder purity upon magnetic properties. Maximum coercive force was obtained in powders of approximately 65 pct metallic iron content while the maximum energy product, (BxH) occurred in powders of 85 pct metallic iron content. Careful consideration of the preceding theoretical considerations and experimental results has led to the manufacture of permanent magnets from ultra-fine ferromagnetic powders by powder metallurgy techniques. Such work has been done by Dean and Davis," the Ugine Co. of France, and Kopelman." The aforementioned work of Kopelman and the Ugine Co. was concerned somewhat with the effect of various additives upon the properties of hydrogen-reduced ferrous formate. Virtually no work, however, has been published on the effects of additives on the reduction rates of metal formates, although unpublished work by Ananthanarayanan16 howed promise of improved energy product in ultra-fine iron compacts prepared by the hydrogen reduction of a coprecipitated mixture of magnesium and ferrous formate. After consideration of the preceding information, it was hoped that a better balance between the metallic iron content and particle size of the reduced iron powder could be accomplished by a prevention of the attendant sintering of the partially reduced iron powder during the reduction reaction. It appeared possible that magnesium oxide might interpose a mechanical barrier between adjacent iron particles and prevent their sintering together, while metallic cadmium and metallic tin would interpose a liquid barrier which might accomplish the same purpose. The degree to which these materials were effective in accomplishing the foregoing objective and the experimental details associated with the work are reported in the following sections of this paper. Experimental Procedure Preparation of Formate and Oxide Mixtures: To obtain ferrous formate of reproducible reduction characteristics, a slight modification' was made in the technique of Fraioli and Rhoda." A supersaturated solution of ferrous formate was mixed with an equal volume of 95 pct ethyl alcohol and the formate crystals precipitated by stirring and screened to —325 mesh. These crystals were in the shape of elongated hexagons, approximately 4x10 micron in dimension. Various preparations of such ferrous formate, designated as lot 111, were reduced for 2 hr, yielding ultra-fine iron particles of exceedingly reproducible size, metallic iron content, and magnetic properties. The magnesium and cadmium formates were prepared by the reaction of dilute formic acid with their respective carbonates, while the tin formate was prepared by the reaction of dilute formic acid with stannous hydroxide. To evaluate the effect of metallic formate additives in intimate mixture with the ferrous formate, varying amounts of magnesium, cadmium, and tin formates were coprecipitated with the latter. DURING the past fifteen years there has been a great change in the methods of treating employ-ment and discharge throughout industry. Perhaps nowhere has this change come more abruptly than in the metal mining districts of the West. In 1909, when I went to work for the Phelps Dodge Corporation in Bisbee, their operations were roughly arranged accord-ing to shafts in seven divisions, each employing from 100 to 250 men underground, and the mechanical department employing some 250 men, mostly on the surface. The underground divisions were each in charge of a foreman who had under him a night foreman and from two to four shift bosses on' each of two shifts. These foremen reported to the underground superinten-dent and he in turn to the superintendent of the mine department. The mechanical department was in charge of the master mechanic who reported to the superintendent of the mine department. RUSTLING A JOB IN THE OLD DAYS It was customary for men seeking employment to "rustle" the division foreman at the shaft during the lunch hour or at the close of the day shift and the master mechanic at the shops. There was no real attempt at interviewing the applicants for underground work. They simply filed in and out of the foremen's office-50 to 150 strong-in ten or fifteen minutes. If the foreman needed men, and he generally did; to replace those that he and the shift bosses had removed during the morning, he picked out those he knew or strangers who took his' fancy. The former in many cases were chosen for negative reasons rather than positive. In selecting the latter, the foreman felt that if they failed to show ability promptly, he could replace them the next day, and often did so. Even if these foremen had been skilful and well trained in the art of selecting men, it would have been impossible under the pressure of other duties to exercise that skill and experience in so doing. The conditions in the mechani-cal department were little better. About all that can be said in favor of such a method was that with a sur-plus of labor it "got by." The labor shortage brought about by the war disclosed its fundamental weakness.

GLASS squares compressed on edge by steel jaws in poor contact with them developed jagged "partial-contact" cracks caused by the formation of local tensile stresses. Compressed by steel jaws in perfect contact, they developed smooth "release cracks" during release of the pressure, caused by the formation of local tensile stresses during the release of the pressure. All these cracks were parallel to the pressure. A Microflash photograph of a disintegrating specimen under sufficient pressure reveals a network of fractures roughly normal to each other, also "release cracks" and a disintegration cloud. The Griffith theory is amended to account for the formation of a first crack. A new theory, based on the theory of thermal agitation and wave propagation, is proposed to account for the progress, velocity and forking of cracks. The network of fractures is shown to have been caused by reflection at a free boundary of pressure pulses emanating from a first crack. Postulating equal distribution of energy in the pulses emitted on either side by a crack in particles, the smaller fragments are shown to continue fracturing preferentially while some of the coarser fragments remain as residual pieces. As comminution of the smaller fragments proceeds, the solid is reduced to a collection of residual particles of smaller and smaller sizes, accounting for the disintegration cloud. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Apparatus A crushing device was built, consisting of a steel frame and two polished, hardened steel jaws to crush plate-glass samples. This device was placed between the plates of a hydraulic press (Fig. I). For centering the pressure, the upper jaw was guided vertically and provided with a rounded top. Later it was replaced by a steel jaw ground out of a 2 1/2-in. steel ball, the lower surface being ground to an optical flat (Fig. 2). Four rollers were used to eliminate side thrust. Screws and centering blocks served to center the specimen in the crushing device. Hard steel shims placed under the shoulder of the upper jaw limited the "follow through" of the jaw after failure of the specimen. Stress distribution was first examined with a polariscope mounted on an optical bench, using monochromatic light. It was found convenient to mount polaroid, quarter wave and monochromatic plates directly on the device itself. A Microflash unit* was used as light source for the photographs. The Hadsel Mill. By R. G HALL (Trans, vol 112 4000 words) This mill is designed to effect the entire reduction of ores by combined crushing and grinding from mine run size to material sufficiently fine for the usual operation of flotation or cyaniding The work is begun and completed in the same machine. The machine is designed on the principal of the elevator wheel, and crushing and grinding are accomplished by dropping a mixture of ore and water upon specially placed "breaker plates" in such a manner that the resultant material passes back into the buckets of the wheel for further elevation One method of removal of the finished product is to permit an overflow of wet pulp on one side of the mill through coarse screens A recent improvement provides for the removal of a pulp by a launder part way up the path of the buckets In either case the pulp passes to a classifier, and the oversize back to the mill in the manner familiar in ball-mill practice Although hardly through the development stage, the machine has given a very good account of itself in simplification of plant, by elimination of coarse and fine crushers with consequent reduction of installation cost and power consumption As compared with the ball mill alone, there is a reduction of power consumption as well as a material reduction of grinding steel There is an increase in cost of maintenance other than grinding steel, but as the machine passes out of the development stage there is a show¬ing of reduction of costs on this item It seems probable that with further develop¬ment and strengthening of the weaker parts further improvement may be made Ball Milling. LISTED among strategic and critical minerals for stockpiling, mica is an important raw material in electronic and electrical equipment industries. Each year large quantities are consumed in the manufacture of television and radio tubes, radar sets, generators, transformers, electric toasters, and irons. Crude mica, which comes from the mine in crystals or in rough books of various shapes and sizes, is known as run-of-mine or book mica. Structural imperfections, impurities, rough edges, and defective laminae are removed by cobbing, rifting, and trimming to produce a marketable block mica or film mica.' After the rough books have been hand-cobbed to remove adhering rock, dirt, and crushed or defective mica they are rifted, or split. In the U.S. a straight-bladed knife is generally used for rifting. Products of this operation are classed broadly as untrimmed sheet mica and scrap. Sheet mica is any relatively flat piece sufficiently free from physical defects to be cut or stamped into specified shapes for industrial use. Sheet mica is classed as block, film, and splittings. Block mica is not less than 0.007 in. thick with a minimum usable area of 1 sq in. Film mica is split from the better qualities of block mica to groups of specified thickness ranging from 0.0012 to 0.004 in. Splittings are sheets with maximum thickness of 0.0012 in. and minimum usable area of 3/4 sq in. As virtually no mica splittings are produced in the U.S., they will not be discussed in this report. Small, low quality block is subdivided as punch and washer. Punch mica is thumb-trimmed material large enough to yield a circular disk of at least 11/2 in. diam for stained quality mica and 1 1/4 to 2 in. for clear quality. Poorer lots, often referred to as washer mica, are also included in the general term punch mica. Trimming, the next step in processing sheet mica, removes broken and ragged edges, loose scales, and other major imperfections. Trimming may be done with a knife, sickle, shears, or fingers. In the U.S. it is usually done with a 3-in. linoleum knife to obtain a bevel-edged cut. If ragged edges are broken off with the thumb and fingers, the mica is called thumb-trimmed. INTRODUCTION. IT is unnecessary to repeat here the contents of many valuable contributions to this subject which have appeared in the Transactions and in the publications of the U. S. Geological Survey. As a basis for the further suggestions of this paper, the following are the most important: 1. The investigation of J. R. Don,1 showing the gold of certain Australasian veins to have been deposited by ascending solutions, and not by lateral secretion. 2. The theory of Prof. Posepny,2 distinguishing the vadose from the deep circulation, and ascribing the origin of certain classes of ore-deposits to ascending solutions of the latter class. 3. The theory of Prof. Van Hise,3 as to the underground circulation and the primary enrichment of veins thereby. 4. The paper of Prof. J. F. Kemp,4 showing that ore-deposits are largely the products of " expiring vulcanism." Many of Prof. Kemp's, ideas have been widely adopted by mining men. 5. The theory of secondary enrichment, so lucidly expounded by Mr. S. F. Emmons.5 This theory, dealing with, the rearrangement of ore-bodies after primary mineralization, has been generally adopted, and seems to me to have been as completely proved as the nature of the case permits. THE Institute assembled in the library of the Sheffield Scientific School at 8 o'clock, Tuesday evening, February 23d. Prof. G. J. Brush greeted the members present on behalf of the Government of the Sheffield School in a few words of cordial welcome, to which President Raymond responded. Grain boundary M23CB precipitates have been shown to form by a process involving the migration of an austenite grain boundary, and each plate of precipitate is in parallel orientation with one of the austenite grains constituting the boundary. The carbide distribution and morphology appear to be sensitive to grain boundary mis orientation. Some areas of austenite grain bowzdary permit the development of an array of M,C, particles, some of which are in parallel orientation with one grain and some with the other grain constituting the boundary. Massive carbide at grain boundary triple points is also shown to be in parallel orientation with one constituent grain. PREFERENTIAL precipitation during aging of carbides of the type (Fe,Cr)23C6, usually written MZ3C6, in grain boundaries of quenched austenitic stainless steels has been widely recognized. M23C6 has a complex cubic crystal structure' which contains ninety-two metal atoms and twenty-four carbon atoms per unit cell. Less energy is involved in forming grain boundary precipitates than in the formation of intragranular precipitates, and the process is further enhanced by the accelerated diffusion rates in the boundaries and by the probability of segregation of chromium atoms and carbon atoms to the region of the grain boundaries during prior solution heat treatment in order to reduce lattice strain. Early electron micrographic studies2, 3 involving either extraction replica or normal replica techniques established the geometric or dendritic form of the carbide particles, although this approach led to dis- pute as to whether the particles grew within the plane of the boundary or grew into the matrix.4-6 More recent thin-foil studies' have claimed to identify a discontinuous precipitation process involving M23C6 at grain boundaries, and the object of the present work was to attempt to clarify the situation using modern electron micrographic and diffraction techniques. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.1) Material. The steel selected for this work had a base composition of 24 pct Ni-25 pct Cr-3 pct Ti and contained about 0.04 pct C. The full analysis if given in Table I. This alloy was in the form of strip which had been hot- and cold-rolled to a thickness of 0.6 mm. 1.2) Heat Treatment. Specimens 4 cm long by 1 cm wide were solution-heat-treated for 3 hr in argon at 1150°C, followed by water-quenching. Specimens were subsequently aged in vacuo at 750°C for periods up to 500 hr. 1.3) Preparation of Electron Microscope Specimens. The heat-treated strips were cut bv spark machining into discs of 3 mm diam and 0.6 mm thickness. he-discs were dished on both sides using an electrolytic jet of 15 pct HCl electrolyte at 80 v. Final electro-polishing of the discs was carried out using 10 pct perchloric acid, 20 pct glycerol, and 70 pct ethanol at 10 v. The current density was kept below 300 ma. cm"2 by cooling the electrolyte to 0" to 5°C. As soon as a small hole appeared, the electropolishing was stopped and the specimen was quickly washed with ethanol.

A considerable quantity of experimental hydrocarbon K-factor data has been correlated as a function of component identity, temperature, pressure and convergence pressure. To utilize these correlations effectively, convergence pressure must be determined accurately, particularly for volatile mixtures near their critical states. This paper presents phase diagrams that illustrate physically the meaning of convergence pressure. A new method, referred to hereafter as the "critical composition method", will be outlined for calculating convergence pressure. An example calculation has been included to illustrate how to use this new technique. INTRODUCTION The principle of hydrocarbon phase composition calculations as applied to such diverse problems as optimizing separator performance or predicting fluid compositions at various stages of reservoir depletion is the same. Usually, temperature, pressure and the numbers of moles of the various components of the fluid contained in a given volume are known. Questions answered by the phase calculation are what fraction of the total mass of fluid exists in each of the equilibrium phases, and what are the mole fractions of the various components in the two phases? To answer these questions the Natural Gasoline Supplymen's Assoc. (NGSMA) has correlated a considerable quantity of K-factor data as a function of temperature, pressure, component identity and convergence pressure.l To use these correlations to obtain the best answers possible, one must be able to calculate the convergence pressure. This is particularly true for over-all fluid compositions in the neighborhood of the critical state. STATEMENT OF THEORY Use of convergence pressure as a correlating parameter is based on a postulate similar to the law of corresponding states used in correlating PVT data of hydrocarbon gases. This postulate, which proposes convergence pressure as a correlating parameter, has been stated as follows: "The equilibrium vaporization constant for one component in a complex system is the same as the equilibrium constant at the same temperature and pressure for the same number or kind of components, providing only that the convergence pressures of the two systems are exactly the same at the same temperature and that the components are of the same homologous series".2 This law, as with all laws of physics, cannot be proven theoretically. It can only be justified by experimental data supporting its premises. Arguments have been made that this law violates Gibb's phase rule. For example, consider a four-component system. By Gibb's phase rule, which is thermodynamically rigorous, f = c — P + 2 =4, for a four-component, two-phase system. Thus, four independent intensive variables must be specified to establish completely all the intensive variables of the equilibrium phases. On the other hand, according to convergence pressure theory, only three variables need be specified for any mixture containing four different components. These variables are temperature, pressure and convergence pressure. Thus, the two laws appear to be in conflict. However, the convergence pressure postulate is more restrictive than Gibb's phase rule. It applies only to mixtures of the same homologous series. Hence, these two concepts are not in disagreement. THERE has been interest recently in the conditions under which dislocation pipe diffusion may be observed. In order to extend the measurements to temperatures below Tm/2, where pipe diffusion becomes more important, a chemical sectioning technique was developed for silver single crystals which makes possible the removal of layers of 100A or less. The procedure is briefly as follows. Silver single crystals of 99.995 pct purity were cut in the form of discs t by 4 in., electropolished, and electropolated with Ag110 to about 1000A thickness. The thickness was determined by calibrating the activity with the weight of heavier platings, up to 10,000A. Both diffused and undiffused samples were sectioned in a two-step process. Reaction with a solution of iodine in alcohol formed a thin, even layer of AgI, which was then dissolved in a KCN solution. The reaction rate of the iodine solution varied slightly over a period of time, so that the thickness of the stripped layers, while quite even and regular for a given specimen, ranged from 65 to l00W for different specimens. This variation was checked by using a thickly plated standard with each run. Layer thickness was determined from undiffused samples by the point where the layer activity drops to half the maximum. This maximum intensity also provides, with appropriate corrections, the initial concentration per layer co. Because of the small penetration distances, it is necessary to use the exact solution of Fick's law for a source of finite thickness.' For a plating of thick- where c is the concentration at depth x. flj the error function, D the apparent diffusion coefficient, and t the time. The diffusion coefficient was obtained from the concentration-penetration data by extrapolating to x = 0 where c/co = erf h/2(Dt)1/2 Enough points were taken to impart confidence in the accuracy of the intersection, generally about ten layers. Four temperatures were used as in Table I. For best accuracy, t and h were chosen to give values of the parameter (Dt)1/2/h between 1.0 and 1.7. A typical concentration-penetration curve is shown in Fig. 1. The diffusion coefficients calculated from Eq. [I] are plotted in Fig. 2. For comparison, the high-temperature data of Tomizuka and sonder 2 which go down to 630°C are plotted as the solid line 2(a) from their expression D = 0.40 exp (-44,090/RT). Also for comparison, the lowest temperature point of Hoffman and Tumbull3 is plotted. It is apparent that our data diverge appreciably from the high-temperature extrapolation by 373°C. A better straight line fit for the low-temperature portion is obtained by subtracting the extrapolated volume diffusion coefficient from the apparent. or measured coefficient, and plotting the difference, curve (h) of

Some eight years ago I became interested to a considerable extent in one of the well-known deposits of sulphury iron ore in New Jersey, and, as a consequence, soon became interested in the subject of the elimination of the sulphur. On investigation I found that no department of pig-iron manufacture had received less attention than that of roasting or calcining ores for the elimination of sulphur, carbonic acid, water, etc. My first devices to eliminate sulphur mere naturally in the limekiln line, with solid fuel mixed with the ore, in the same way = common lime is burnt with small coal. While this process will succeed tolerably well for carbonates or calcareous ores, even though they contain sulphur as sulphates, I soon found it would not answer for our magnetites, which are very hard and dense, carrying from 2 to 5 per cent. of sulphur as pyrites, and become very sticky as soon as any attempt is made to roast them at a high heat. Some laboratory experiments developed the fact that the nearer the gaseous current surrounding the hot ore approached in composition pure atmospheric air the more rapidly the sulphur was oxidized, while in an atmosphere composed largely of carbonic oxide, carbonic acid, and nitrogen, it seemed almost impossible to reduce the sulphur more than one-half, which was a confirmation of the well-known Pact that just one-half of the sulphur in pyrites volatilizes very easily, and that the trouble is mainly to remove the remainder. It was thus apparent that the atmosphere surrounding the ore was of as much importance as the temperature..• This led to the trial of a kiln to heat the ore by conduction through the brick. It was divided into ore-chambers, which were surrounded with flues, through which the products of combustion of gaseoua fuel passed without coming in contact with the ore. We did not, however, succeed by this arrangement in getting more than a cherry-red heat, which, of course, was too low to accomplish anything. I had at this point become convinced— 1st. That gaseous fuel only would accomplish the work successfully. 2d. That since a high temperature was required to insure a rapid oxidation of the sulphur, and also to make the ore open and porous,
