The term "milling" as applied to nonmetallic minerals often refers merely to pulverizing without preliminary beneficiation. As applied to dimension stone, it embraces all the gteps involved in shaping and giving the desired finish to blocks. Processes such as sawing, planing, rubbing and polishing seem far removed from milling as the term is used in ore dressing, nevertheless they involve the element of concentration, for only 25 to 50 per cent of the gross quarry output may leave the mill as finished products after imperfect stone has been culled and the rough blocks trimmed. On the other hand, numerous nonmetallic minerals have to be concentrated in much the same manner as low-grade ores. Engineers and machinery manufacturers have begun to recognize more clearly the opportunities awaiting them in the nonmetallic field and have brought with them the methods and equipment developed in metal-mining camps, occasionally with little modification. General Economic Considerations Approximately one-half of the total value of the mineral production of the United States represents mineral fuels, and the other half is about equally divided between metals and nonmetals, the nonmetals recently having become relatively more important. In terms of volume the domestic output of nonmetallic minerals other than fuels is more than 10 times the annual output of metals. Considered on the basis of industrial utility and general commercial and military significance, moreover, the flow of nonmetallic mineral products is quite as needful to our national integrity and well-being as is that of metals, fuels, or other basic materials. Despite their importance individually and as a group, the nonmetallic mineral industries differ so widely in essential characters and economic environment that producers thereof have been slow to develop a community of interest among themselves or with the metal-mining fraternity. A spirit of change is in the air, rule-of-thumb methods soon may be relegated to limbo, and new methods—especially time-tested ideas borrowed from ore-dressing practice—are being introduced. The Giesche Spas Akcyjna, in Polish Upper Silesia, produces zinc, lead and coal, together with many byproducts emanating from the zinc-lead ores. The development of the concern in the 230 years of its existence has been influenced not only by metallurgical improvements but also to an unusual extent by political and economic factors. The company was founded by George Giesche, who was born in 1653 and died in 1716, and who in 1704 received from Emperor Leopold I the exclusive privilege of mining and selling galmei1 in Silesia. His children, who retained the business, gave the name to the firm—George von Giesches Erben. After 1802 modifications in the Prussian mining and corporation laws limited the rights formerly enjoyed. The family concern became a corporation and expanded its activities, building smelters and opening new mines. The establishment of the present eastern boundary of Germany resulted in the transfer of nationality of a large part of the mines and surface plants to Poland, which, in turn, necessitated the formation of a Polish company, the Giesche Spólka Akcyjna. The first concentrators at the Bleischarley mine were built between 1854 and 1860 and owing to dual ownership were two in number. They were used only for the treatment of galena. In 1873 a concentrator was built for the treatment of sulfide ore preparatory to treatment in the Recke roasting plant, which was the first to have an acid plant for recovery of the sulfur gas. This concentrator was replaccd by a larger one in 1888, when the present orebody was opened up. At the same time, a mill was built for the treatment of the galmei. The concentration of the sulfide ore resulted in a much higher grade of feed for the zinc plants after the first troublesome steps of the roasting process had been worked out. Consequently, the oxide ore in its primitively concentrated state was no longer highly valued as a retort charge. and steps had to be taken to increase its zinc content.

The mines and the mill of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co. are on the east slope of the Eugene Mountains, in Pershing County, Nevada, 8 miles northwest of Mill City, a station on the Southern Pacific R.R. and on the Victory Highway. Fig. 1. Supplies and, concentrate are transported by truck over an automobile road of easy grade. The property is at an average elevation of 5500 ft. and climatic conditions are generally favorable for continuous operation throughout the year. The ore treated is supplied by two adjoining mines, the Stank and the Humboldt. Physical and mineral characteristics of the ores produced by these two mines are substantially similar, although variations occur in hardness and mineral distribution.' The economic mineral is scheelite (CaWO4), composed, when pure, of 80.6 per cent tungstic trioxide (WO3) and 19.4 per cent lime (CaO).

The Roan Antelope Copper Mines Ltd. are situated in the north central part of Northern Rhodesia, at an altitude of 4000 ft. and 13" south of the Equator. The town site (Luanshya) is well situated and enjoys among other things a really temperate climate for 10 months of the year. The two spring and summer months, October and November, while hot and humid, do not bring any great discomforts as compared with many other mining camps. Strictly modern brick homes, with electric lights, purified water, telephone and water-borne sewage, add to the comfort of the employees. A rainfall of approximately 60 in. per year furnishes ample water for both industrial and domestic purposes. The rainy season generally begins in October and lasts through until March. As much as 3 to 4 in. is recorded in 24 hr., but this offers no difficulties because the runoff is very rapid. The property is connected by a 24-mile branch line from Ndola with the main line of the Beira-Mashonaland and Rhodesia Railways Ltd. Practically all supplies from overseas are transported over this line from Beira, 1743 miles distant on the east coast in Portuguese East Africa. The mine output also leaves Africa from this port. Passenger service is principally via Cape Town or Durban, a distance of about 2100 miles to either port. The Imperial Airways maintain a service from Cape Town to Croydon, taking 9 days for the trip. Connections can be made with this service at Broken Hill, 150 miles south of Luanshya, by either rail or automobile. Thus, after several days of travel through virgin bush, a visitor arrives at a typically modern town site in the heart of Africa. Every development in mining, milling and smelting practice is used to advantage. Iron-ORE beneficiation methods are determined largely by blastfurnace requirements. There are still many millions of tons of direct furnace ore in the Lake Superior district and blast furnaces are designed and operated for the most efficient use of this material. Beneficiated ore must be so prepared that existing furnaces may use it without alteration in design or radical changes in practice. Many attempts have been made to develop new furnaces or processes for smelting iron-ore concentrate not suitable for blast-furnace use, but these processes have gained little importance. It is, therefore, the endeavor in beneficiating iron ore to make a product that will give at least as good results as direct furnace ore in existing blast furnaces. The term "beneficiation," as applied to iron ore, does not necessarily mean concentration, but more accurately means "dressing up" the ore so that it is more acceptable to the blastfurnace operators. In modern blast-furnace practice the structure of the ore is quite as important as the chemical analysis. Certainly, the higher the iron content and the lower the silica, phosphorus and sulfur, the more desirable the ore bccomcs; but if the structure is bad, that is, if the blast-furnace gases can penetrate the charge only with difficulty, the ore is undesirable regardless of its analysis. This means that the ore should be as uniform in size as possible and free from fines, and also that the individual particles of ore should be pervious to the reducing gases of the furnace. Structure and purity are the primary requirements for a furnace ore and structure is just as important as purity. Iron-ore beneficiation processes can be divided, therefore, roughly into two main classifications: (1) processes that primarily improve the structure, and (2) processes that primarily improve the chemical analysis. During the past 10 years approximately 25 per cent of the ore shipped from the Lake Superior district has been beneficiated. Of this about half has been crushed and screened, a simple operation that primarily improves the structure but in some cases also improves the analysis slightly. In 1915, H. A. Guess, Vice President of American Smelting & Refining Co., in charge of its Mining Department, learned that the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Co., Ltd., a pulpwood and paper-mill enterprise, had found upon its large concession in Newfoundland, and had opened up by shaft to the third level and some drifting, a lenticular orebody indicating about 100,000 tons, as an extremely fine-grained sulfide ore, averaging about 0.05 oz. Au, 4 oz. Ag, 1.5 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Pb, 18 per cent Zn; and that having sent parcels of this ore to Minerals Separation, Ltd., and various other metallurgical testing concerns without obtaining any success in commercial separations thereof, had discontinued work thereon and let the workings fill. Mr. Guess wrote to the general manager of that company and obtained a few hundred pounds of the typical ore, which he sent to his company's metallurgical testing laboratory at Flat River, Mo., outlining various flotation tests desired thereon, in an endeavor to obtain separation into a commercial lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. But the art of flotation had not then progressed far enough to treat such ore, the galena and zinc blende being so fine grained that grinding to about 300 mesh was required to release the mineral particles in their gangue. Mr. Guess had flotation and other tests continued upon this ore from time to time with whatever new reagents and flotation devices were evolved as time went on, and finally, in 1925, he succeeded in effecting in his company's testing plant, then at Wallace, Idaho, separations into lead concentrates and zinc concentrates of satisfactory commercial grade. Mr. Guess then proceeded to unwater, examine and sample the property and made with the owners a partnership operating agreement upon the mine itself and a considerable area surrounding it, and in the early summer of 1926 began to prospect for additional orebodies, utilizing for such prospecting geophysical methods under the direction of Hans Lundberg, methods which up to that time had been little used in mining in the western hemisphere. This geophysical work found two large flat-lying orebodies of a type precisely similar to the smaller body of the original discovery. The larger orebody, some 3500 ft. west of the original

The Tri-State zinc-lead mining district embraces an extensive area, including the northeastern part of Ottawa County, Oklahoma, the southeastern part of Cherokee County, Kansas, and adjacent portions of Missouri, mainly in Jasper County. The Oklahoma-Kansas portion of the district, in the vicinity of Picher, Okla., has been the principal producing area since 1917, and the present milling practice in that section is the subject of this paper. This district is the largest zinc-producing field in the United States. In 1926 it produced 55 per cent of the nation's zinc and 15 per cent of its lead, and in 1933 it produced 35 per cent of the zinc and 10 per cent of the lead. From 1842 to 1933, inclusive, the total output of the district was 18 1/2 million tons of zinc and lead concentrates valued at 818 million dollars. Of this production, the Oklahoma-Kansas, or Picher, field yielded over 9 million tons valued at over 400 million dollars. Mining operations in the Oklahoma-Kansas field near Picher and Baxter Springs began in 1915. The mills built it that time consisted merely of gravity concentration plants employing jigs and tables and the same flow sheets as had proved satisfactory with the free-milling ores such as were mined in the Joplin-Webb City fields in Missouri. The Kansas-Oklahoma ores proved to be much richer but also more refractory to treatment than those in the Joplin area, and contained a considerable percentage of zinc mineral not freed by the amount of crushing usually practiced in preparing the ores for jigging. Thus the old Joplin type of mill, with its usual two or four jigs and a few tables, proved inadequate and resulted in excessive tailings losses sometimes as high as 50 per cent

DuRing the early mine development period, 1929 and the first part of 1930, a 300-ton pilot-plant concentrator was built at Nkana mine of the Rhokana Corporation, Northern Rhodesia. This plant operated from May 26, 1930 until Oct. 26, 1931, treating 101,080 tons of Nkana ores and producing 4372 tons of concentrate. The plant was built, primarily, as a test unit to determine the grinding characteristics, floatability, etc. of the Nkana ores and other ores of the Rhodesian copper belt and to supply sufficient data on which to base the design of a 5000-ton concentrating plant at Nkana mine. The test unit operated wholly on development ores and no attempt was made to grade or select the ores from any section of the mine. The average assays for the 17 months of operation are given in Table 1. The first ground was broken for the 5000-ton concentrator during June, 1930, and the construction of the plant was completed in November, 1931. The plant started on Dec. 10 and has operated continuously since that date: The whole of the concentrating plant is compact and closely connected, yet with sufficient space for expansion of all sections up to 20,000 to 25,000 tons per day capacity. Mining operations are carried on along a length of about four miles on the easterly limb of the Nkana syncline. This length includes the North orebody, from which all production has thus far originated, and the Mindola orebody, now being developed for production. The ore-bearing measures in the North orebody are leached for some 75 ft. below the surface; the oxidized zone varies in vertical extent from 100 to 150 ft. The management of The Union Pacific Coal Co., which operates a group of coal mines in Southern Wyoming, believes in the value of applied psychology as a productive factor in the work of getting out coal. Operating almost wholly through the medium of mechanical loading machinery, the company has for some years paid a bonus, equivalent to one-half the labor saving made above a determined average output per shift worked, on a given machine. No penalty is attached where the established output is not obtained, but in 1933 the men on one class of machines earned an average premium of $0.633 per shift on 56.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded. On another class of machine, the men earned an average premium of $0.686 per shift on 28.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded An increase of 36 per cent in tons loaded per man-shift has resulted since the program was instituted. This coal company has also been very successful in reducing mine accidents through prizes awarded in an unusual way. At the close of the year, every man whose particular mine section passes through the year without a lost-time accident is given a ticket entitling him to participate in a safety drawing where an automobile is awarded as first prim.. There are also a number of cash safety prizes which are similarly awarded. Some 1500 persons attend the drawing, which excites much interest and attention. The particular plan employed, the payment of production bonus awards and safety prizes, is foundationed upon collective. rather than individual effort, and, once gotten under way, has proved to be substantlally self-cnforcing.

Those interested in training engineers for the mineral industry should consider how their men may fit into the general industrial recovery that now seems well started. One hears occasionally that too many engineers have been produced, especially mining engineers, and that the opportunities for their employment are decreasing. Just what is the situation? Enrollment in American engineering schools has fallen off sharply during the past few years. In 1930-31, the year of peak enrollment in all engineering schools, there were 78,685 engineering students in the United States, but in 1932-33 only 67,584, a decrease of 14 per cent. President Walters, of the University of Cincinnati, in his survey of 74 engineering schools, published in School and Society of Dec. 16, 1933, estimates that the engineering enrollment for 1933-34 is 10 per cent under that of 1932-33, or about 60,000. The situation in the mineral .ethnology schools somewhat parallels this general trend, although not to the same degree. Last year there were 4443 students in mineral technology schools, compared with 4687 in 1930-31, a decrease of 5 per cent. This year, with 3995 students, the enrollment shows a decrease of 10 per cent from last year, or a decrease of 15 per cent from 1930-31. Enrollment has no doubt been influenced by the condition of the mincral industry, just as the enrollment of other engineers has been affected by general industrial conditions. But the mineral industry, which is the first to recover, has not been so seriously affected as have some of the manufacturing industries during the past four years. This is especially true of coal and gold mining, which have been increasing rapidly in their production during the past year and have given employment to more men. Ten years ago, approximately 1,000,000 men were employed in the coal and metal mines and quarries, compared with probably half that number now. The number of mining engineering graduates in 1934 will be 234 and in metallurgy 252. In other words, fewer than 500 graduates are entering these industries the present year. With conditions improving in the mineral industry, coupled with a falling enrollment in our mining schools, there certainly exists an opportunity for young men now beginning their training for this industry.

It has been said that "the command of nature has been put into the hands of man before he knows how to command himself," and what we see about us gives particular emphasis to this observation. If this condition be granted, the vaunted boast of school and college, of the institution that had the training of this generation, and of its fathers, and of its grandfathers, the boast that education is a "preparation for life," stands exposed as a hollow claim, or as a ghastly, cynical conception of life, or else education has fallen far short of its intentions. It has been evident for some time that education was not meeting the fullest expectations of society. In recent years there has been a deal of speculation indulged in by both laity and faculty in regard to American education and American civilization, and some few and sporadic changes have been effected. Today, however, there is no longer time for mere hypothetical considerations; we are faced with certain definite facts and confronted with obvious conditions that will not wait for fine-spun theories. If educators do not put their house in order, someone else will do it for them. The trends in mineral industries education must be in harmony with this general realignment that is today visible on the educational horizon, and only as these trends are in conformity with this movement can they be called sound. Two questions, then, confront mineral industries educators: (1) What are the trends in mineral industries education, and (2) how do these trends correlate with the major educational movements of the day? Scope or Mineral Industries Education Before launching into these particulars, it might be well to define the scope of mineral industries education and to consider its present position. Mineral industries education embraces three main types of work: 1. Earth Sciences and Geography.—Geology, mineralogy, geography— courses basic to all mineral industries and to the humanities. 2. Mineral Engineering.—Mining, petroleum and natural gas—dealing with mineral producing industries. Application of earth sciences and all types of engineering to exploitation of natural mineral resources.

Many proposals have recently been made regarding the broadening of engineering education, often with little consideration of the problems their application involves. The chief purpose of this paper is to point out how many and how complex are the questions that absolutely must be answered, in any conscientious effort to solve the problem of liberalizing engineering curricula. Among proposed additions, more training than is now given has been urged in public speaking, report writing, business law and contra s, general finance, money and banking, scientific management, gene ' economics, economic and financial history, social problems, labor pre lems, public ownership, psychology and similar related subjects. T urge in this direction is widespread and persistent. In discussing the blem, the following questions must be given careful consideration, an he absolutely definite conclusion reached: 1. The Present Curriculum Load.—Is this load actually too heavy? In the face of this load, is there room to add broadening subjects to our curricula? Can elimination of present subject matter make room for such additions? Can an elective system accomplish the desired end? 2. Problem of Early Specialization.—Is early specialization a weak ness? Is industry forcing early specialization? Do our varied degrees demand early specialization? Can broadening be harmonized with the present degree of specialization? 3. Graduate Work to Solve the Broadening Problem.—Can we add the desired work in the graduate school? Are the proposed additions of graduate caliber? Is it desired to reduce graduate standards? Can present undergraduate work be removed to the graduate school, to make room for desired broadening courses? Is graduate work normally broadening, or is it specialization ? 4. Importance of Proposed Additions.—Will they increase entrance salaries? Will they increase the engineer's efficiency? Will they raise

With a growth of 718 per cent in the petroleum industry from 1901 to 1931, there was a corresponding increase in the demand for technically trained men in the industry. This was first met by increasing numbers of college graduates from the old established courses in chemistry, geology and engineering. However, a need began to be felt for scientists and engineers specially trained for the petroleum industry. In 1912 the University of Pittsburgh established the first department in any university in the world that offered major work in petroleum engineering and petroleum geology. In Europe, the first major work in petroleum engineering was offered in England in 1913 at the University of Birmingham. The University of California and Stanford University offered major work in petroleum engineering in 1915. Since that time at least 10 other American universities and colleges have offered major work and at least 12 others are now offering some courses dealing with petroleum and the petroleum industry.

Some mixtures of sulphide and oxide ores from the Tintic district in Utah are of a sufficiently good grade to be shipped to the smelter without beneficiation. In mining this type of ore, however, a material tonnage of ore of a similar composition but of lower grade is obtained. It is a question of economics whether such ore should be shipped with a certainty of a small return or concentrated if that would yield a sufficiently increased return to amortize plant construction and upkeep and yield a higher rate of profit than at present. It may be assumed that the tonnage of this borderline ore is constantly increasing and that eventually it will attain such proportions as to justify plans for milling on a relatively large scale. Under existing conditions, the producer of mixed sulphide and oxide ores is not greatly concerned about the physical characteristics of his ore or of its mineralogical complexities, since his contract with the smelter calls for payment on the basis of chemical analysis. When concentration is contemplated an entirely different picture is presented. Percentages of valuable metal content must then be con-sidered in terms of minerals, for it is in the form of minerals that recoveries are made and losses sustained. In describing the performance of a given flotation mill and reagent combination, it may be stated as a generality that a specific percentage recovery of valuable elements is made. Technically, however, the concentrator is really constructed and the reagents are selected to recover the valuable minerals. These considerations must be given prominence in discussing borderline ores from the Tintic district because of their physical characteristics and mineralogical composition. Because of these peculiarities they may be justly termed complex, since their lead, silver, and copper contents are each represented by two or more minerals of different chemical composition and presenting widely divergent physical properties. The Subcommittee on Manganese, of the A.I.M.E. Committee on Industrial Preparedness, prepared under date of Jan. 24, 1924, for and at the request of the War Department, a confidential report on manganese as an element in the problem of national defense. This report was later released and published, in slightly modified form, as a separate pamphlet. After the lapse of eight years, in view of the vital position of manganese in the problem of industrial preparedness agenist a war emergency, the War Department made a request to have the onclusions of 1924 reviewed and brought up to date. To comply wi' this request the manganese subcommittee was reconvened and ex' tive studies were once more made of the entire subject of mang? . A new report, with specific recommendations, was submitted + War Department in February, 1932. This second report, with 4. L specific conclusions and recomrnendations expressed to the War Department omitted, has now been released and is hereby published. Following a rather brief discussion of uses of manganese and classification of manganese ores, requirements and sources are dealt with at some length. Domestic ferro-grade reserves are estimated on the basis of price and are shown by means of a curve where tons of metallic manganese are plotted cumulatively against prices ranging from 50¢ to $1.00 per unit; thereby indicating at a glance the tonnage which the Committee believes would become commercially available at any particular price per unit. Foreign sources of ore are described and foreign prices which the domestic producer must meet are considered. The question of a war-emergency reserve is then analyzed, requirements are balanced against apparent resources, and the principal conclusion that emerges is that a war reserve or stockpile is still vital to national defense.

In the foreword by C. K. Leith, Chairman of The Mineral Inquiry, it is pointed out that the ordinary mineral production tables do not show the commercial control, and that some knowledge of the situation is desirable as a background for the consideration of problems involving mineral raw materials. The report consists principally of tables, accompanied by a brief text, giving the production and an analysis of the control, according to nationality, of 18 minerals: aluminum, chromite, copper, iron and steel, lead, manganese ore, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, nitrates, petroleum, potash, silver, sulfur, tin, tungsten, vanadium, and zinc. For the most part, the production figures for 1929 and the latest figures for reserves have been used. When feasible, the control has been shown at the various stages of production; mining, smelting and refining. American capital was dominant in the production of 10 mineral commodities, including six of the most important; British capital, in four instances; while Spanish, German, Chilean or Chinese interests cach led in the control of one. British, French, German, and Dutch capital occupied second place in the control of most of the important minerals. Between two-thirds and three-fourths of the world's mincral production is controlled by British and American capital.

The present case history deals with the examination of an almost forgotten nickel prospect, near Winesap, Chelan County, Washington. Although the final results yielded no ore body of commercial importance, the integration of surface and underground exploration, geophysical survey and diamond drilling endow the story with interest. The program is significant because it is illustrative of how the most disappointing expenditures in mining exploration, the "not-finding" costs, could have been reduced had geophysical methods been applied at an appropriate stage in the prospecting work. The Chelan nickel deposit was discovered about 1900, on a sage-brush-covered hillside with a southerly slope, adjacent to Winesap Canyon; the paved highway now extending from Wenatchee northward, up the Columbia River and into Okanogan Valley, is only a mile away. After the deposit was found, three short prospect tunnels were driven into it, and the prospect then remained dormant for 40 years. No. x tunnel was 80 ft. long, running north into the hillside. For the first 35 ft. this adit exposed a typical, iron-stained gossan with streaks and stains of malachite, and small seams of water-soluble nickel sulphate. Beyond this, it encountered a relatively fresh peridotite, well mineralized with blebs of pentlandite. Systematic sampling yielded an average assay of 1.5 per cent nickel and 0.3 per cent copper. Down the hillside to the south and 35 ft. lower in elevation, No. 2 tunnel was driven under No. I and in the same direction, traversing 50 ft. of gneiss before it reached the peridotite. At this point the latter formation showed only scattered blebs of sulphides, not of commercial grade. To the west, on the same contour line as No. I tunnel, and 800 ft. around the hillside from it, No. 3 tunnel was driven 50 ft. into the hill to explore a strong gossan outcrop that assayed 0.5 per cent nickel (Fig. I). From the geological exposures on the hillside and in the tunnels, it appears that the main mass of the hill is formed of an ancient and altered gneiss complex. Into this, a sill-like injection of amphibolite (altered peridotite) was intruded, which, at least in some places, contains commercial quantities of nickel sulphide. Its structure is obscure, but it appears to dip into the hill at an angle of about 15°. In the vicinity of No. 3 tunnel a large dike of quartz diorite cuts the peridotite or amphibolite; about 140 ft. north of the portal of the tunnel, a dike of andesite 00 ft. wide cuts boldly up the hillside to break the continuity of the peridotite in that direction. The geological evidence available was not adequate to decide whether the peridotite forms a continuous sill, or occurs as isolated bodies in the gneiss. The present case history deals with the examination of an almost forgotten nickel prospect, near Winesap, Chelan County, Washington. Although the final results yielded no ore body of commercial importance, the integration of surface and underground exploration, geophysical survey and diamond drilling endow the story with interest. The program is significant because it is illustrative of how the most disappointing expenditures in mining exploration, the "not-finding" costs, could have been reduced had geophysical methods been applied at an appropriate stage in the prospecting work. This paper is the result of a research program entered into cooperatively by the General Reinsurance Corporation and Lehigh University in January 1944. The research program was instituted to find a more positive method to determine the presence of hazardous roof conditions in , mining operations. The co-authors, together with Mr. R. D. Currie, Engineer for the General Reinsurance Corporation, started working on the project in January 1944, first undertaking a library search; second, a preliminary study based on some existing equipment; third, the design of new and more suitable equipment; and finally, the field testing of equipment and methods. Purpose Any study of the accident statistics of mining operations will disclose the rather startling fact that approximately 50 to 60 per cent of all fatal underground accidents in the anthracite and bituminous mines are caused by falls of roof and coal, the metal and nonmetal mines showing only a slightly smaller percentage. Advancements in safety engineering have produced definite results in the decrease of accidents due to blasting, haulage, electricity, and explosions but no such decrease is shown in those caused by falls of roof, coal, or ore.
