"The aim of any mine design is to ensure that the excavations remain stable for the period they will be in use. Various pillar systems are used to ensure that underground stopes remain stable and that mining activities do not affect the surface infrastructure through either surface subsidence or seismicity. Intermediate-depth platinum mines make use of in-stope pillars designed to fail while the pillars are being cut at the mining face. The pillar stress exceeds the loading capacity and the pillars crush as a result. The aim of the paper is to provide an overview of in-stope crush pillars. This will include the application, behaviour, function, mechanism, impact, and design of a crush pillar system."

A prototype weightometer soft sensor is under development at DebTech, De Beers in partnership with Venetia Mine. Its main function consists of an online data source; data validation; dynamic weightometer models; online detection of weightometer failure; alarming and replacing a weightometer when it fails. 31 dynamic models have been developed. All models with R2>= 85%are accepted as good models and they generally have satisfactory results with a daily error of less than 8% within 90% confidence level. By using those models, a set of soft sensors can be set up to cover all weightometers in the entire processes starting from primary crushing to the stock piles of dense medium separation (DMS). Some practical issues and concerns on model development are discussed, including data collection, data analysis, data pre-processing, variable selection, time delay, model training and model validation. When deploying the weightometer soft sensor system, the potential benefits could include: reduction in plant downtime; reduction in unplanned maintenance and even replacement of non-critical weightometers, particularly where nuclear weightometers are used. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng. (Mining Eng.) Cullinan Diamond Mine currently handles 3.2 million tons of run of ore per annum. This is done by means of an underground train system, which is located at 763 metre level. Four trains, one in each quarter of the pipe, collect ore from passes and transport it to centrally located tips in the north and south of the pipe. The ore is then split into coarse and fine fractions. The coarse fraction proceeds to the primary crushers in the north and south. Historically, mining has been performed in such a manner that an equal amount of ore has reported to each quarter of the pipe. However, the tonnage profile of the mine will change such that the ore will no longer be split equally. For approximately five years the majority of ore will report to the east and thereafter most of the ore will report to the western portion of the mine. This will continue for the remainder of the current infrastructure level?s operational life. Coupled with this is the fact that the mine is aiming to increase its annual production to 3.8 million tons. The result is that the current ground handling system cannot accommodate the additional tons and therefore alternative ground handling options have been investigated. The continued existence of Cullinan Diamond Mine relies on finding a system that can economically handle the additional tonnage. Three options were investigated. Firstly, a train option, which would be an upgrade of the current system, was investigated. Two truck options were also investigated, the first of which was a conventional truck option. The second truck option was more interesting and involved an unfamiliar Combi truck system. The truck options were investigated primarily due to the fact that the block height of the BA West (a new production block) can be increased by 15 meters if a truck option is decided upon. This would create a significant increase in revenue for the BA West project. Each of the options was assessed in terms of its physical and financial feasibility. In terms of the physical constraints, it was found that all three systems could work. Detailed financial analysis indicated that either of the two truck options would be a suitable solution. However, due to the limited information regarding the Combi truck option, it should be further investigated. This applies particularly to the actual running and maintenance costs for the equipment.

The corrosion behaviour of a high-quality rebonded magnesia-chromite refractory in contact with a vacuum oxygen decarburization (VOD) slag with high Al2O3content (15?20 mass per cent) is investigated under VOD process conditions by rotating finger tests in a vacuum induction furnace. The refractory degradation mechanisms are studied by the characterization of corroded microstructures using scanning electron microscopy, equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. The classical limit equilibrium methods are suspected to be ineffective in predicting the potential for highwall failure in many instances in coal mines around the world. Slope engineers have for many years recognized a block thrust failure mechanism for slope failures, but little work had been done before 2000 to explain the actual mechanisms which must be responsible for the failure. The main reason for this is that limit equilibrium methods implicitly assume rigid blocks, and the resulting force equations must be satisfied everywhere simultaneously for them to have any meaning. This paper will show that the material involved in the slope failure is not rigid; indeed it undergoes considerable permanent deformation during failure. This observation allows the authors to treat the block boundaries independently, because they need not maintain a constant spatial relationship with one another, as is assumed in other methods. To enable analysis of this type the authors assume that the weight of the blocks is evenly distributed. This is reasonable, because the slope material is not strong enough to be self-supporting without some sort of constraint, or strong enough to be able to apply point loads to the surrounding material. The purpose of this paper is to extend the practical application of the analytical method developed from mechanism studies to provide an objective assessment of the risk of slope failure, and therefore guidelines for more stable slope designs. This work is based on studies carried out on two failures in an open pit coal mine in South Africa, and provides a methodology to assess the potential for failure more objectively than is possible with currently accepted methods, while at the same time remaining sufficiently simple to allow a ?back of the cigarette box? assessment by geotechnical engineers on site.

It has previously been observed that industrial high-titania slags display a compositional invariance, remaining close to stoichio-metric M3O5. The present study focuses on this invariance and the phenomena which may cause it. The invariance was studied using thermochemical calculations and a mechanism is proposed for the observed behaviour. The mechanism suggests that a combination of thermochemical equilibrium and transient slag solidification and melting results in the observed compositional invariance. The proposed mechanism provides new insights and prompts questions about other mechanisms in the smelting process.

This paper is based on a study to determine the potential beneficiation opportunities for marble from Griekwastad in the Northern Cape Province. The marble was characterized mineralogically by X-ray diffraction. Major and trace elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. The sample was crushed, and the crushed material beneficiated by tumbling and polishing. The resulting beads were incorporated into a variety of jewellery and other decorative items. It is concluded that the beneficiation of Griekwastad marble presents a good opportunity for value addition and job creation, provided that an effective marketing strategy for the products can be developed..

Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties as well as the behaviour of the mould fluxes during melting, important in order to improve continuous casting operations. Lubrication and control of heat transfer in the mould are the more relevant functions of these materials. Values of physical properties like viscosity and surface tension at melting range temperatures are required, as much as the thermal behaviour under process conditions. The heat extraction from the liquid steel has an important effect in the final quality of products. Mould fluxes are constituted by different oxides, and may form glasses and crystal phases during cooling. The solidification rate and the chemical composition determine the proportion, type and crystalline morphology, which are responsible of the thermal transfer processes. In this paper, viscosity values are reported in the melting range temperatures calculated by means of the Riboud model and compared with fluidity results obtained by the inclined plane technique. Also the linear expansion of the mould fluxes at high temperatures was determined by dilatometry. The crystallization in two different fluxes was determined by DTA tests and correlated with the basicity index. Crystal phases were evaluated by scanning electronic microscopy on quenched samples at 1300°C. This information is relevant to increase the knowledge on the peritectic steel grades casting process in order to improve its quality. The analysis of subsidence due to the opening of an underground void (mining, water exploitation or civil works hole) is a problem usually hard to solve. First of all, it requires a predictive model, in order to define both the displacement magnitude and area affected by subsidence. Such model should be validated with measurements of the actual movements sustained on the surface, in order to adjust it properly and enable influence of future behaviour in a reliable way. Two different kinds of problems might arise. On one side, it is necessary to control and measure surface movements in a very exhaustive way during a long period of time, beginning before underground works take place and finishing years after they are over. Furthermore, three factors bring in errors, some times of magnitudes higher than the displacement magnitudes measured. These include: the fact that reliable and long-term information cannot always be achieved; the precision of measuring devices; and the design of the topographical network itself. In addition, the predictive models more widely used only apply to certain excavation geometries, mainly to horizontal holes. In light of this background, the Group of Rock Engineering, of the University of Oviedo Mining Department, has developed a working methodology and a specific software tool, Subsidence 3D, to estimate ground displacements and strains. The program will allow for predictive models to be defined and also allows the treatment of data related with topographical marks and its comparative analysis with calculated results. The software has been programmed using Visual C++. Graphical outputs however are generated using AutoCAD 2000. This paper mainly refers to a practical situation, an underground coalmine, remarking the main difficulties arisen during the study of the available information and proposing how to solve them. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling is used to research the complex flow structures that exist in a hydrocyclone. By simulation of a two phase (water and air) flow system, the internal flow and multiphase interactions are investigated. The suitability of CFD modelling as a design tool is further evaluated by examining the effect of varying device dimensions. Three hydrocyclone geometries, used in previous studies, are specified. A transient simulation approach, which employs the Reynolds Stress Model as turbulence model and the Volume of Fluid model as multiphase model, is followed. Casting, cooling and crushing/sieving of ferroalloys has followed a well-established pattern in the whole ferroalloys industry for many years. Usually liquid metal or alloys are cast into flat open moulds of various shapes and forms, and after solidification the product is removed from such mould to further cool down to a temperature where subsequent handling steps are feasible. Common to all mechanical product fractioning is the generation of dust and fine size material with lower product value. For almost 10 years, Bécancour Silicon has investigated alternative roads to improve technology and/or reduce or solve problems related to those disadvantages. Since 1995 Bécancour Silicon operates a special silicon granulation plant targeted to product for the chemical treatment/conversion of silicon for silicones production. Prior to the development of the granulation process, various systems had been evaluated, among others the vibrating casting bed, now in operation elsewhere but judged inappropriate because of the tapping volumes to be handled at Bécancour Silicon and other disadvantages. After evaluation of all aspects of heat transfer, radiation, and conductivity in relation to transfer media and within the product, a novel system was designed and built.

The results of a series of physical model studies of the stability of jointed rock slopes carried out some years ago are described. These models were tested under centrifugal loading. Four ?geological? structures were tested; all had the same joint orientations and strengths, but the relative spacing of the joints was different. The results showed that the mechanisms of failure of the slopes varied for the different models, and the gravitational loads at which failure developed also varied. The following conclusions are drawn from the results of the physical model tests: ?the mechanism of slope failure is by progressive deformations throughout the slope ?the ratio of the spacings between the different sets of discontinuities exerts considerable influence on the slope failure ?in the models tested, the intact material strength had no noticeable influence on the stability of the jointed rock slopes(note that for hard rock, similitude conditions indicate a prototype slope height of 300 to 400 m, and therefore intact rock failure might not be expected under simple gravity conditions, i.e. no tectonic stresses) ?rock slope failures are three-dimensional and in general are not amenable to two-dimensional simplification ?knowledge of the orientations of discontinuities in the slopes does not allow prediction of a unique failure surface, nor of a volume of failure. The volume of failure is determined to a large extent by the plan configuration of the slope.

Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900 and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at lowpO2s and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2=1*10-6atm at 1200and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200 and 1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by Fact Sage with a thermodynamically optimized database have been compared with the experimental results. Pipelines for transporting high concentration slurries are often designed using methods applicable to homogeneous non-Newtonian laminar flow. Many industrial slurries though comprise coarse particles in a non-Newtonian carrier fluid, and existing experimental evidence from tests with such slurries demonstrates that they are not homogeneous. Under laminar shear conditions the coarse particles settle, even in statically stable carrier fluids. To understand this better, the Institute of Materials Science and Technology (IMST) at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is conducting ongoing research into the flow of these high concentration non-Newtonian settling slurries. Since pressure gradient and flow rate measurements alone are insufficient to adequately model the flows, an electrical resistance tomography (ERT) instrument developed by the University of Cape Town (UCT)was incorporated into the pipe test loop to determine pipe cross-section concentration and velocity profiles. The software developed to do this is modular and allows different image reconstruction and cross-correlation algorithms to be implemented and tested without significantly changing the rest of the application. At a total frame capture rate of 566 frames/sec a 2.67 GHz Intel Celeron processor with 500 MB of RAM is fast enough to calculate and display velocity profiles in ?real-time? at an update rate of one profile every two seconds. Examples of experimental concentration and velocity profiles obtained using the system are shown and some proposed improvements/extensions to the system are listed.

"The risk of spontaneous combustion is well known in the South African coal mining industry. In the coming years it is very possible that the incidence of spontaneous combustion will increase from current levels, due to factors such as an increased rate of mining, re-working of previously mined seams, more stooping and total extraction for underground mines, and higher stripping ratios for surface mines, leading to more spoils. It is also fairly certain that coal mining will face tougher environmental emissions legislation in the near future. To determine the areas where the risks of spontaneous combustion are high, it is necessary to improve on our current laboratory procedures for testing and evaluating coal samples, combining the results with site and field data, and if necessary revising the laboratory rating system to refine our understanding of South African conditions.Currently, laboratory tests are conducted in order to determine both the Wits-EHAC index and the crossing-point temperature which, when combined, give an indication of the spontaneous combustion propensities of the coal samples. This procedure has enabled the establishment of a database of results to review and evaluate South African coal seams. Using this database, the high-risk areas in terms of spontaneous combustion are identified. Tests have been undertaken for five consecutive years, between 2008 and 2012. In total, 119 coal samples from different coal seams and production coalfields have been analysed and classified through a series of laboratory tests. A comprehensive database of these results is available, and is continually being updated as new test results are added. This database will continue to expand, and to provide the basis for an improved risk evaluation methodology for spontaneous combustion"

A new heuristic sublevel mining stope optimizer is presented. The optimizer seeks the best locations and lengths of a series of vertical raises that, together with the blocks linked to each raise, define a mining stope. Five design constraints ? the footwall angle, the hangingwall angle, the number of raises, the maximum distance of a block from a raise, and the minimum width required to move the farthest block towards the raise ? allow the shape of the sub-stopes associated with each raise to be controlled. The optimization is done on the locations and lengths of raises using a genetic algorithm to efficiently sample the parameters? space. For each raise, a local network is defined in cylindrical coordinates around the raise such as to impose the design constraints. A maxflow algorithm on the local network is used to determine the optimal sub-stope for each raise. All substopes are combined to define the global stope for the entire deposit. The best global stope is obtained using a genetic algorithm to find the raise parameters providing the best profit over the entire deposit. Two synthetic cases and one real deposit are used to evaluate the new algorithm and compare the results with the single-raise optimizer. The multiple raises approach leads to significantly improved economics compared with the single-raise stope optimizer, and the dilution is also substantially reduced compared to the single-raise case.

Mill log analyses and complementary hot deformation studies were carried out on the as-cast structure and on a hot rolled structure of the same low carbon steel (SAE 1006) that had been processed according to the direct or hot charge route in a compact strip plant. The main softening mechanisms during hot rolling were found to be complete dynamic recrystallization during each pass above about 1000°C for the as-cast structure with an austenite grain size of 277µm and, secondly, incomplete static recrystallization after each pass with a finer austenite grain size of about 26 µm and tested below 1000°C. A two-stage hot working mechanism has also been found by others on a similar steel also processed by the hot charge route and this may appear to be a characteristic of this type of material. Constitutive constants determined from hot working studies were combined with other constants from the literature and incorporated into a grain size development model that correctly predicts the final ferrite grain size in the hot rolled strip steel. The predicted incomplete static recrystallization during the last three finishing passes in the plant appears to result in some retained strain in the hot rolled austenite as it transforms to ferrite on the run-out table. Analyses with the model predict relatively little sensitivity of the final ferrite grain size to process and product variables such as temperature and strain per pass for the last three passes and also the starting austenite grain size in the slab. In the present paper, microstructure changes of solid-state reduction of industrial chromite pellets and lumpy ore were investigated with SEM/EPMA. To simulate the reactions in the packed bed zone of the Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF), carbon monoxide was used as the reducing agent, with the presence of graphite in proximity to chromite. The experiments were carried out at 1500 °C. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe and analyse the structure and composition changes of the chromite samples. It was found that reduction of lumpy ore generally took place slower than that of pellet. In all samples, chromite reduction proceeded faster in the outer part of the sample than in the centre part. The reaction mechanism is discussed on the basis of experimental results and earlier investigations. The possibilities to optimize the FeCr production process are also discussed.

Compositional data constitutes a special class of quantitative measurements involving parts of a whole. The sample space has an algebraic-geometric structure different from that of real-valued data. A subcomposition is a subset of all possible parts. When compositional data values include geographical locations, they are also regionalized variables. In the Earth sciences, geochemical analyses are a common form of regionalized compositional data. Ordinarily, there are measurements only at data locations. Geostatistics has proven to be the standard for spatial estimation of regionalized variables but, in general, the compositional character of the geochemical data has been ignored. This paper presents in detail an application of cokriging for the modelling of compositional data using a method that is consistent with the compositional character of the data. The uncertainty is evaluated by a Monte Carlo procedure. The method is illustrated for the contents of arsenic and iron in groundwaters in Bangladesh, which have the peculiarity of being measured in milligrams per litre, units for which the sum of all parts does not add to a constant. Practical results include maps of estimates of the geochemical elements in the original concentration units, as well as measures of uncertainty, such as the probability that the concentration may exceed a given threshold. Results indicate that probabilities of exceedance in previous studies of the same data are too low.
