In 1980 the Bureau of Mines developed the Mine Inspection Data Analysis System (MIDAS). MIDAS is a computerized, industrial hygiene data base capable of statistically analyzing environmental data collected in coal and noncoal mines and mills by Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors or mine operators. The objectives of this report are to describe the current contents of MIDAS, to report analyses of coal and noncoal mine respirable dust samples collected by MSHA inspectors and to evaluate the proposed change in the metal and nonmetal respirable dust standard from a formula based upon the percentage of quartz identified in the sample to 100 µg/m3 of respirable quartz. Based on samples collected by MSHA inspectors, changing the noncoal respirable dust standard would result in 4 pct fewer samples with dust concentrations exceeding the standard. Analysis of respirable coal dust data collected by MSHA inspectors showed that mines with longwall plows or shears had the highest geometric mean concentrations (1.64 and 1.29 mg/m3, respectively). Mine operations using continuous rippers out-numbered longwall mine operations about 10 to 1 and had a geometric mean concentration of 0.66 mg/m3.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory tests of five samples of low-grade phosphate ores from Idaho. The laboratory test work has demonstrated that by grinding, desliming, and flotation a portion of the siliceous gangue can be removed. The highly carbonaceous ores responded successfully to treatment after preroasting, to produce a plus-30-percent-P205 product. It has been found that highly siliceous ores, as represented by the samples treated, are more readily amenable to concentration than ores high in calcium carbonate. Of the five samples tested, four were amenable to concentration to a product containing over 30 percent P205. One sample, from the Conda, second bed, was not amenable to mineral-dressing treatment to produce a plus-25-percent-P205 product.

This paper deals with roof bolting in Alabama coal mines and iron-ore mines from the time it was introduced in early May 1948 to May 1, 1953, a 5-year period. The Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of the United States Steel Corp. began systematic roof bolting in early May 1948 in a coal mine and in an iron-ore mine, which had some of the poorest roof conditions in the Alabama mines. After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proved by the Tennessee Co. it was gradually adopted by other companies throughout the State, until in May 1953 approximately 53 percent of Alabama's total coal production and 100 percent of Alabama's total iron-ore production, mined underground, was being produced from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the advancement made in roof bolting in the 5 years and also the amount of roof bolting that was being done as of May 1, 1953. Significant progress has been made in the coal and iron-ore mines of Alabama in reducing the roof-fall fatality rates during the past several years by adopting systematic roof bolting. The groundwork was laid through successful experiments early in 1948 by the Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of the United States Steel Corp. in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines. This experimental work was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead Co.2/ in its Southeastern Missouri mines.

ANALYSIS of 117 occurrences of bumps in coal mines shows that 67.6 percent are associated with pillar-line points.4 Slabbing and splitting pillars, development, and other unfavorable milling practices in abutment areas may be a contributory or the primary cause of bumps. The cure for pillar-line bumps is to recognize areas that can be expected to become highly stressed and to project the mining plan and operations to eliminate such areas insofar as possible. If such areas cannot be eliminated, then the mining plan and operations should be projected to avoid the necessity of disturbing these areas before the stresses have been dissipated.

The Bureau of Mines constructed a fully automated pilot plant facility to study the hydraulic transportation of solids through a lock hopper feeder system. An equation for the energy requirements to transport coarse solids hydraulically proved applicable to this system. Optimum velocities were obtained for limestone, mine refuse, and bituminous coal. The experimental data, calculations, and graphs show the effect of velocity, specific gravity, and solids concentration on head loss and power requirements. Other data were obtained and evaluated to determine the effect of particle size on head loss. Results also are given for (a) tests using friction reducing polymers; (b) tests using seven test sections of steel alloy pipe to determine their wear characteristics; (c) tests to determine spatial segregation of moving particles; and (d) tests to determine the effect of shape, size, and specific gravity on particle velocity in a horizontal pipeline. The lock hopper feeder system was found practical for continuous hydraulic transportation of the material types and size ranges tested.

In presenting this list of permissible explosives and blasting devices, the Bureau of Mines desires to call attention to pages 19 and 24 outlining, the conditions in use under which, and only under which, the explosive or blasting device is permissible. In view of a recent publication recounting trade practice favoring the use of a blasting device without stemming, particular emphasis is placed upon condition 4 on page 19 and condition 2 on page 24. An explosive or a blasting device enumerated in the permissible lists of this Bureau is not permissible in use unless it is properly confined with clay or other incombustible stemming.

The company operates a gold mine, the Grand Republic, in the Sugar Loaf mining district; a 100-ton flotation mill in Lefthand Canyon near Gold Hill; and a custom sampling punt, the Boulder Ore Sampling Works, at Boulder, Colo.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of shredded automobile scrap for copper cementation. Air agitation was used to improve the cementation rate and prevent excessive buildup of copper on the iron. The pieces of scrap were too large to be properly evaluated in the laboratory; therefore, a pilot scale test unit was constructed and the process tested at field locations. Pregnant solution was obtained from industrial leaching operations, processed in the test unit and the barren solution and cement copper were returned to the plant process stream. The test results showed that the air-agitated launder containing auto-mobile scrap was an effective means for recovering copper from leach solutions. A continuous l4-day test run was made without a noticeable decrease in cementation efficiency. The most suitable scrap product was obtained from incinerated automobile hulks shredded in a hammer type of shredder. However, it was necessary to remove small pieces such as nuts and bolts because they interfered with the discharge of the copper product.

Bauxite was first discovered in-the United States near Rome, Ga., in 1887, Approximately 400,000 tons of bauxite ranging from 46 to-62 percent alumina were mined in the area from 1888 to 1930. In February 1943, The Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. installed a dryer and began mining and reworking dumps from the old bauxite mines. Some 3,000 long tons were dried and shipped to the chemical industries from March 1943, to June 30, 1943. In 1941 and 1942, representatives of the Bureau of Mined and the Federal Geological Survey/ visited this area and proposed an exploratory project that at first was to be confined to the Heritage district northeast of Rome (see fig; I). The Bobo district, southwest of Rome, was to be explored after work .1n the Hermitage district was completed. The Hermitage district comprises an area of about 50 square miles in the northwest quarter of Bartow County and the adjacent portion of Floyd County. It is bounded on the north by the Gordon County line, on the east by U. S. Highway 41, on the south by U. S. Highway 441, and on the west by State Highway 53.

As part of its research program to investigate ways of improving resource recovery and reducing subsidence, researchers from the U.S. Bureau of Mines placed instruments in the B-North ore body of the Cannon Mine, Wenatchee, WA, to monitor cemented backfill and rock deformation during mining. The vibrating-wire gauges proved to be reliable and versatile, and approximately half of the instruments are providing data after 2 years of use. A two-dimensional, finite-element model was used to analyze the Cannon Mine's multilevel bench cut-and-fill mining method and predict rock and backfill displacements. The model accurately predicted rock displacements, but the predicted and measured displacements in cemented backfill had a correlation coefficient near zero, indicating that the model should only be used to predict rock displacements and not backfill displacements. A finite-difference model was also used to evaluate the stability of a cemented backfill pillar. Results can be used to conservatively predict backfill stresses, but on-site observation of pillar failures coupled with in situ measurements are needed to make more accurate predictions. An ongoing evaluation of the mining system has indicated that filling the primary stopes tight to the back with cemented backfill allowed these pillars to carry overburden loads soon after the cemented backfill was placed.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coals; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the fourth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under phase (1) of the investigation. It covers Armstrong County, Pa., which comprises parts of the Foxburg, Clarion, Brookville, Kittanning, Bural Valley, Smicksburg, Freeport, Elders Ridge, and Indiana quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale of 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and more than 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps, Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

PART A. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT – GENERAL Paragraph 1. Electrical Equipment; Examination. All electric equipment shall be examined, tested, and properly main¬tained by a qualified person to assure safe operating conditions. The examinations and tests shall be performed at intervals not exceeding six (6) months unless otherwise specified in Parts A, B, C, D, and E. When a potentially dangerous condition is found on electric equipment, such equipment shall be removed from service until such condition is corrected. A record of such examinations shall be kept and made available to an authorized representative of the Secretary and to the authorized repre¬sentative of the miners in such mine. Each item of major equipment, in¬cluding substations, switchgear, load centers, and so forth except powered hand tools, shall be recorded separately. The record of such examination shall include all dangerous conditions found, corrective action taken, and name of examiner, and shall be signed by the person responsible for main¬taining the equipment in safe operating condition, who shall also be a qualified person. Paragraph 2. Electrical Work; Qualified Personnel. No electrical work shall be performed on electrical distribution circuits or equipment, except by a qualified person or by a person trained to perform electrical work and to maintain electrical equipment under the direct supervision of a qualified person. Disconnecting devices shall be locked out and prominently tagged by the persons who perform such work, except that in cases where locking out is not possible, such devices shall be opened and prominently tagged by such persons. "Platelet activating factor (PAF) can be released from pneumocytes following exposure to occupational dust (Am. Rev. Respir. Dis. 135:83, 1987). In addition, PAF has been shown to induce pulmonary inflammation, edema, and bronchoconstriction (Hosp. Prac. 19, 67, 1983). This investigation reports the effects of PAF on the properties of three types of cells found in the lung. PAF (1-100, K1/2 = 2.5 pH) caused depolarization of neutrophils as well as generation of chemiluminescence and secretion of hydrogen peroxide. These responses were dependent on the presence of extracellular sodium. However, PAF did not alter oxygen consumption of neutrophils. Although PAF (10 uM) caused depolarization of alveolar macrophages, no stimulation of chemiluminestence, superoxide secretion, or oxygen consumption was observed. However, PAF (10 uM). did potentiate chemiluminescence and superoxide secretion in response to zymosan (2 mg/ml) by 55% and 36%, respectively. In addition, PAF (10-90 uM) caused aggregation of alveolar macrophages. PAF (2-10 uM) also caused depolarization of type II cells, but did not affect membrane integrity or oxygen consumption. However, PAF (10-18 PM) enhanced the activities of two distinct forms of cytochrome P-450 in type II cells and caused aggregation of type II cells at PAF doses above 18 uM. These data indicate that PAF can affect the secretory activity of pulmonary phagocytes and the ability• of type II cells to detoxify foreign compounds (Bureau of Mines Grant - G1175142).INTRODUCTIONPlatelet activating factor (PAF) is a glycerophospholipid (1-0-alkyl-2-acetylsn-glycerol-3-phosphoryl choline) which has been shown to Mediate a broad range of biological activities (1-3). Its pulmonary actions include contraction of pulmonary tissue (4), secretion of leukotrienes from leukocytes (5), airway constriction (6), pulmonary edema (7), and enhanced migration of neutrophils into the airspaces of the lungs (8,9).PAF can be released from several different cell types, such as, basophils, neutrophils and alveolar macrophages, in response to a variety of particulates or membrane stimulants which include zymosan, calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and endotoxin (10-13). Therefore, PAP may play an important role in the development of pneumoconioses by mediating pulmonary responses of lung cells to a variety of occupational dusts. To investigate this possibility, we determined the effects of PAF on several physiological parameters of neutrophils, alveolar macrophages, and alveolar type II epithelial cells."

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1952 was mode under a co¬operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior.Analytical data are presented for 94 samples of aviation gasoline which include for the first time in this series of reports, data on five samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 34 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' production in their laboratories and the results sub¬mitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.SUMMARYA comparison of certain properties of the commercial aviation gasolines produced in the United States during 1950, 1951, and 1952 is presented in table 1, the 1952 data being average values from tables 3 through 7 of the present report. Trends in certain characteristics of these fuels may be seen in figures 1 through 5 which also indicate the minimum and maximum values. As may be observed, the properties of commercial aviation gasolines have not varied greatly during recent years. A list of aviation-fuel survey reports published by the Bureau of Mines is given on page 7.Table 2 presents a summary of data from table 8 and compares properties of aviation jet fuels of 1952 with summarized data on jet fuels of October 1951."

The 1954 field tests consisted of six experimental shots in relatively deep holes in a sandstone similar to many oil-bearing sandstones. Water-injection measurements were made before and after each shot to establish the change in conductivity of the fluid caused by the shot. The pressure pulse produced by the shot was recorded in nearby holes to monitor the shot and to determine if any relation existed between the change in conductivity and the nature of the pressure pulse. The results of water-injection tests showed the range of conductivity of fluid before and after shooting with two different types of explosives. Because of the large spread in data for similar shots, not enough information was available to evaluate the differences in increased conductivity produced by the two explosives or any relation between the increased conductivity and the nature of the pressure pulse. However, these results, with the results of other tests involving explosive shots in rock, provide guidance for future research on the oil-well-shooting problem.
