Public awareness of, and involvement in, recycling has increased significantly in recent years. Nevertheless, recycling is generally perceived as a new development, and is familiar only in the context of municipal solid waste management. The actual magnitude and scope of metals recycling in the United States have gone virtually unnoticed. Over time, both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of secondary metals recovery and reuse have changed substantially, while the attendant regulations have become increasingly stringent. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report examines trends and developments in major metal demand and recycling, and analyzes the possible impacts of regulations with regard to recycling activities.

This Bureau of Mines report analyzes data on the physical properties of quartzite rock from the Crescent mine, Coeur d?Alene mining district, Kellogg, Idaho, to demonstrate the use of multivariate techniques. After regression, factor, component, cluster, and discriminant analyses are discussed, these techniques are applied to the Crescent mine data. Three appendixes contain some of the required mathematical and statistical detail plus heuristic examples of three multivariate techniques --component, cluster, and discriminant analysis.

Lignite samples were collected so as to be widely representative of the extensive deposits in the western north-central area. These were carbonized at temperatures ranging from 450° to 550° C., according, to a standardized procedure. In general, product yields varied; extremes obtained on selected samples show char recoveries on the moisture- and ash-free basis as 56.7 percent for slack lignite or "leonardite" to 80.8 percent for a concentrate of the fusain component from a typical face sample; normal lignite samples averaged approximately 70 percent. Tar-plus-light-oil yields ranged from 3.3 percent for the fusain concentrate to 11.0 percent for a normal sample, averaging approximately 8 percent; gas recoveries varied more widely both in yield and in composition, ranging, from 10.0 percent to 27.7 percent, the latter being from leonardite and quite high in carbon dioxide. Sampling was conducted with the view of representing, as nearly as possible, all beds delineated by Brant (2);4/ many are necessarily missing since collection was confined largely to worked deposits. Data presented in this report indicate a general uniformity of North-Central lignite in respect to low-temperature carbonization, with a few possible exceptions of a local nature. When processed according to the indicated conditions, maximum tar yield may be realized with minimum loss of recoverable heating value of the original coal. Natural weathering of lignite, however, does affect tar yield adversely and should be held to a practical minimum in any commercial operation.

For several years, or from about 1932 to 1935, inclusive, the coal industry of the United States had an excellent record as to coal-mine explosions. In 1937 and in 1938 to date there has been a definite increase in the number of explosions attended by considerable loss of life and property damage. In most of these explosions one important underlying and contributing cause has been lack of sufficient (or at least efficient) ventilation to properly dilute and remove explosive gas from the mine. This increase in explosions indicates that. the lesson taught through bitter experience, many times in the not far-distant past, of the need for good ventilation is frequently being overlooked, partly because the relatively good experience of the industry in the past several years has made many mining people forgetful. Moreover mining practices are rapidly changing, and in some instances the changes are being made with little if any regard for safety. It appears, therefore, that a review of some ventilation principles and practices should be of value in preventing further disasters; this paper has been prepared with that object in mind. In coal mining the need for thorough ventilation of all underground working places is recognized by both mining practice and law; such ventilation is generally obtained by the use of fans that circulate a quantity of air much in excess of the quantity of coal produced, by weight as well as by volume. For example, in a relatively small mine producing 1,000 tons of coal per day and circulating 100,000 cubic feet of air, which is by no means abnormal, 2,000,000 pounds of coal and approximately 10,900,000 pounds of air would be moved out of the mine every 24 hours. Because of the need for adequate dilution and removal of methane issuing or likely to issue from mine strata and for removal of the carbon dioxide formed by coal and timber oxidation up-to-date coal mines usually provide an air volume which if adequately coursed not only removes these gases but also the gaseous products of the detonation of explosives (which may include carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen) and the carbon

A deed conveying lands subject to an oil and gas lease under which the lessee had the right to drill or pay money in lieu of drilling at his option, and reserving to the grantor a share of the royalties under such lease, and expressly authorizing the grantee to lease the land for oil and gas purposes and to take the rentals, authorizes the grantee to extend the existing lease before the expiration thereof in consideration of the annual payment of money in lieu of drilling, as contemplated by the lease.

The monetary metals , gold and silver , have recently been the object of such general interest that the United States Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries regarding them . Though requests for technologic information have been numerous , they have been exceeded in number by those concerned with economic aspects of these metals . The nature of the latter communications indicates that the public is not generally aware that various Bureau publications are available which deal with the economic situation of gold and silver . For this reason , it is deemed advisable to present a brief résumé of the papers which are obtainable from the Bureau or the Superintendent of Documents , together with the text of three articles recently prepared by the Director , reprints of which are not otherwise available . The Bureau of Mines compiles figures showing mine production of gold and silver , by districts and States , and cooperates with the Bureau of the Mint in determining the total annual output in the United States as a whole . 3 It recently established an annual canvass to determine the consumption of silver in the arts and industries of the United States , and published an economic paper covering such use in 1928 and 1929 , followed by an information circular on silver consumption by industry during the 2 years subsequent . A 4-year record is thus provided for those interested in utilization of silver . The Bureau has also published summarizations of all available data upon world production since 1493 of gold and of silver . It has , furthermore , rendered available a compilation of production- data of silver mines of the world , and an analysis of it , showing the proportions of silver and other metals contained in all the ores from which silver is derived . " All of these papers are concerned solely with putting into readily usable form statistical data and other factual material ; they do not offer theories or express opinions upon controversial questions related to these metals . Three other recent papers concerned with gold and silver are presented below in order to put them in shape for distribution by the United States Bureau of Mines . This report describes results of laboratory-scale experimental treatment of nine ores containing gold and silver, including samples of products of previous plant treatment, from ore deposits in California and Nevada. The samples treated were taken by engineers of the Bureau of Mines during investigations of these ore deposits. The information reported is of interest for development of the mining districts represented or in future Investigations of similar ores from other sources. The treatment methods were as simple as possible. More complicated treatments were tried when required, The applicability of the methods and their limitations in treating the ores are shown by the data in this report. The following treatment methods were employed in the experiments described: Screen analyses were made to determine distribution of values in various screened-sized portions of crushed ore, or to determine optimum size to which a particular ore should be crushed or ground to liberate values, and some-times to determine residual values in various-sized portions of treated material.

Credited with production of more than 164,000 flasks Of quicksilver from 1876 to 1944, the Oat Hill mine has ranked third in output in the United States. During World War II, when the demand for mercury was high, this property was selected for diamond drill with the purpose of increasing ore reserves so that production could be maintained or, if necessary, increased. Although the existence of marginal-grade ore (fill material) left in the stapes and possibly of virgin ore of good grade had suspected in certain parts of the Oat Hill mine, no factual information to tonnage, grade, or location was available. In close cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines studied old records and the few available incomplete maps. Diamond drilling began in November 1943 and was completed in December 1944. Twenty-eight holes aggregating 8,121 feet were drilled, in only parts of the promising areas disclosed by the study of the data available. Detailed data on the work done by the Bureau as well as a brief history of the property and some operating details are described in this report.

This paper describing the methods of ruining a sand, gravel, and bowlder deposit 20 miles east of Los Angeles, and the classification and preparation of these materials for market, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and cost of mining sand and gravel. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding, the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion anti study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations stall ensue. The description contained herein is typical of this industry in Southern California. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The author acknowledges tine assistance of L. L. Laboratory batch flotation tests were conducted on copper converter slags to evaluate the relative merits of recovering copper from slow-cooled versus water-quenched slags. Three slags containing 1.6, 5.0, and 6.6 percent copper were used. More than 90 percent of the copper was recovered in a rougher concentrate leaving a 0.2- to 0.3-percent copper tailings when treating slow-cooled slag. Lower recoveries and higher copper tailings ranging from 0.5 to 0.6 percent copper were obtained from quenched slag. Grindability studies were made on the respective heat-treated slags. Quenched slags proved more difficult to grind than slow-cooled slags. Cost studies showed that quenched slags can be treated at slightly lower cost than slow-cooled slags. However, the cost advantage of processing quenched slags is more than offset by the higher copper recoveries obtained from slow-cooled slags.

With large deposits of low-grade molybdenum ore and a latent market for molybdenum, which with development might perhaps equal that for tungsten, the United States has for years made no pro- duction of molybdenum ore worthy of mention. In fact, during the decade previous to 1914, there was no output of molybdenum ore in this country except in 1905, 1906, and 1907, when a few small lots of molybdenite and wulfenite were marketed." To ascertain why this possible source of economic wealth should remain undeveloped, the United States Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation in 1914, with a view of assisting the establishment of a molybdenum industry in this country. A preliminary review of the situation showed the following conditions: Briefly there was a lack of any considerable demand for molyb- denum for the one known use that might consume any large tonnage of it, that is, for the manufacture to certain alloy steels to which molybdenum imparts properties roughly similar to those produced by tungsten. It was at once evident that the market for molybdenum in alloy steels must be developed, or that extensive new uses for the metal must be created, before the demand would be sufficient to war- rant any extensive mining of molybdenum ore. Investigation showed that one of the chief factors in retarding the development of any demand for molybdenum by the alloy-steel trade was that manufacturers who might use, or might investigate the possibilities of using, the metal were kept out of the market by the fear of not being able to obtain steady supplies. On the other hand, those who might be interested in the development of some of the extensive low-grade molybdenite or wulfenite deposits in this country were prevented from doing so by the small visible demand and the fear that any large production would glut the market. Owing to these conditions the mining of molybdenum has in the past been confined almost entirely to small-scale operations on high-grade streaks of molybdenite ore, and the methods of recovery have been limited largely to cobbing and hand picking.

This progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines covers 10 mines. It presents comparative costs for drilling with conventional and detachable bits, describes the reconditioning of drill steel, and gives various data on rock drilling at these particular mines. Reports to follow will include similar data on drilling at other metal mines in the United States. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report is based on costs and data developed and furnished by the operators of the mines visited. This Bureau of Mines report presents a cost estimate of the Bayer process, which is used for virtually all cell-grade alumina production. The report will serve as a reference point to determine the economic merits of processes that have evolved from Bureau of Mines investigations on technology for producing alumina from domestic nonbauxitic raw materials. The Bayer process involves dissolving the alumina present in bauxite in a caustic solution at high temperature and pressure. After the un- dissolved impurities are removed, the solution is seeded to produce an alumina trihydrate precipitate. This precipitate is filtered, washed, and calcined to produce the cell-grade alumina product. This cost estimate is for a plant producing 1 million tons of alumina per year. The estimated operating cost is approximately $250 per ton of alumina.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindablity index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions3 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in the coal.

1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee bed is the only bed of major importance in Marion County, 97 percent of the coal mined in the county having come from this bed. There are coal reserves in minor quantity in the Battle Creek bed, and production from this bed depends on a few small truck mines. The Richland bed, or Lower Sewanee, has been mined in the past, but no coal has been produced from it in late years. There are no production records of any other beds in the county, although same coal has been produced from them. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 61 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

To process and use the heavy ends of petroleum effectively, the development of suitable separation and characterization procedures not currently available was required. A systematic procedure was developed by the Bureau of Mines using such techniques as isothermal and molecular distillation, chemical treatment, silica-alumina gel chromatography, gel permeation chromatography, and spectrometry. Using these techniques, the Bureau achieved a detailed separation and characterization of a 370° to 535° C distillate from Gach Saran, Iran, crude oil. Such a systematic procedure and the semiquantitative data resulting therefrom should be of value in selecting feedstocks and in optimizing petroleum processing operations.

"INTRODUCTION During the 6-year period, 1940-45, 481,485,000 gross tons of iron ore was shipped from the Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin mines of the Lake Superior district. Approximately 367,000,000 tons, or 76 percent, of this ore was shipped from open-cut mines. The production of this large tonnage of iron ore from the open-cut mines of the Lake Superior district during the recent war was an outstanding achievement. It is questionable whether this record-breaking tonnage of iron ore, vitally needed for the successful prosecution of the war, could have been produced without the modern equipment and mining methods used in the district, The transportation of iron ore from the open-cut mines of the district is the most important phase of the mining cycle. Although some of the mines still use rail haulage advantageously, this method of haulage has been replaced at most nines with motor-truck haulage or a combination of motor-truck and belt-conveyor haulage.SCOPEThe transportation of iron ore in this report covers (1) power shovels, (2) rail haulage, (3) trucks, (4) belt conveyors, (5) shipping pockets, (6) accident statistics, and (7) safety rules pertaining to open-cut transporta¬tion. The purpose of the report is to discuss briefly and disseminate to the mining industry the modern methods, equipment, and safety practices used in transporting iron ore at the open-cut mines of the district.The 25 open-cut mines covered herein, located in the Marquette, Cuyuna, and Mesabi iron ranges of Michigan and Minnesota, shipped approximately 44,000,000 tons of iron in 1945, which amounted to 72 percent of the open-cut iron ore shipped from the Lake Superior district."

According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, there were 318 petroleum refineries in the United States with a total daily crude throughput capacity of 8,632,390 barrels as of January 1, 1956. Compared with the previous year the total number of refineries declined 8 while the crude throughput capacity increased 211,760 barrels daily. Three refinery districts accounted for 90 percent of the crude-oil capacity increase, the California district 34 percent; the Texas Gulf Coast district, 31 percent; and the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district, 25 percent. Decreases in capacity during the year were reported for the East Coast, Appalachian #1, and the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland districts. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1955 from 25.830 barrels daily to 27,145.

Lack of sufficient publication funds has resulted in the accumulation of considerable unpublished experimental work on copper metallurgy by the Bureau staff . The present report gives extended abstracts of this work , as well as a discussion of the best direction for future efforts . The experimental work reported in this series of papers was done in cooperation with the University of Arizona , Tucson , Ariz . The investigations covered in the third , fifth , and seventh papers were done under the direction of G. L. Oldright and the remainder under the direction of V. H. Gottschalk .
