As a part of the Bureau of Mines' intensive; 'investigation of domestic manganese deposits, ore-dressing studies were conducted on three samples of oxide and silicate manganese ores from various Wyoming properties. The samples wore as follows: 1. A 2-ton sample of ore was obtained by a Bureau engineer during examination of the Caulkins-McGuckin property in the center of Crook County, 10 miles north of Sundance, Wyo. The ore body was described as a vein deposit in rhyolite porphyry. 2. The J. B. C. Mining Co. submitted a 1-ton sample of oxide manganese ore from a property located 44 miles northeast of Rock River in Albany County, Wyoming. 3. A 1-ton sample of oxide-silicate-ore was obtained by a Bureau examining engineer from the Gheen property in the northeast corner of Washakie County, Wyo. The ore body was described as a replacement deposit in a country rock of silicified limestone. As the samples differed widely in physical and chemical characteristics and also in their response to methods of concentration, ore from each property was considered a separate ore-dressing problem.

The demand for aluminum for military use during World War II called for an expansion of aluminum production in the United States A large part of the bauxite (the normal ore of aluminum) consumed in this county comes from Netherlands Guiana, South America. During the war, enemy activities were at times a serious threat to the flow of bauxite to the United States. The need for aluminum. stimulated the investigation of domestic deposits of bauxite and emphasized the wisdom of studying other aluminous materials, such as high-alumina and diaspore clays, to determine their possible use as aluminum ores. The occurrence in Pennsylvania of high-alumina flint clays and nodular diaspore clays has been known for many years. Several companies are mining these high-alumina, low-iron (less than 3 percent Fe2O3) clays and using them for the manufacture of refractory brick. Most of the production has come from Clearfield County, but clay deposits arc known also in Cambria, Centre, Clarion, Clinton, Indiana, Jefferson, Somerset, and Westmoreland, Counties.

"The demand for open-hearth iron ore and the existence of suitable smelting facilities in the St. Louis area seemed to warrant investigation of several Missouri iron-ore deposits of the filled-sink type. Preliminary examinations were made in the autumn of 1944 by an engineer3/ of the Bureau of Nines, and in December of the same year funds were allotted for the exploration of these properties by churn drilling. Three properties, the Silver Hollow Bank and the Newbauer and Coleman properties, were drilled. Work was completed May 8, 1945.The Federal Geological Survey and the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources assisted in the project by determining the stratigraphy from drill cuttings and by mapping the drilled areas.The properties explored are in the hilly section of east-central Missouri and are connected by all-weather graveled roads with various shipping points of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway system within 3 to 6 miles of each property.The Silver Hollow Bank, in sec., 8, T, 40 N., R. l W. Franklin County, Missouri, is in the Meramec State Game Reserve. The nearest town and shipping point is Sullivan, Mo„ which is 6 miles distant. The Newbauer property, in sec. 28, T. 41 N., R, 2 W., Franklin County, Missouri, is approximately 3 miles west of Stanton; The Coleman property, in sec. 14, T. 38 N., R. 3 W., Crawford. County, Missouri, is within a short hauling distance of the railway at Elayer, Mb. These are shown on figure 1.The region surrounding the explored areas contains a series of low-lying hills or ridges and narrow winding valleys drained by the Meramec River system. These hills seldom rise more than 200 feet above the valley floors, most of which are approximately 700 feet above sea level. Except for numerous small farms and a few small towns, the entire region is covered by a dense growth of timber and small brush. The St. Louis-San Francisco Railway system, U. S. Highway 66, and numerous all-weather State and county roads traverse the area."

In a recent report3/ the authors presented a rapid method of calculating, by means of a desk calculator, the future performance of oil reservoirs in which the motivating agent was gas. The accuracy of the method was tested by data obtained from an electronic computer. Because of the accuracy obtained for the limited number of calculations performed, considerable interest has been expressed in the electronic computer program used to obtain the comparative data by an analytical solution. Accordingly, the computer procedures for the analytical solution are presented in this report. In an earlier report, 4/ a reservoir appraisal procedure was published in which an iterative method was used. Many requests were received for the computer program used to obtain the values given in that paper. That program, with some modifications, also is presented in this report. The modifications are given because of the progress that his been made in computers, and because much of the program for the analytical solution is usable for the iterative procedure.

Since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the need for improved duet control methods has become imperative. It has been proposed that one promising dust control technique would be the application of water through the cutter drum. In November of 1972, the Jeffrey Mining Machinery Co., who had been pursuing the development of wet drum miners since 1969, completed the manufacture of a 120M HELIMINER which had sprays in front of the cutting bits on a fixed width drum. On June 27, 1973 Jeffrey and the Bureau of Mines signed the contract numbered B0232060 for the purpose of evaluating "the effectiveness of respirable dust control on a Jeffrey 120M HELIMINER by use of water piped through the head." This evaluation, as described by the contract, was to be accomplished by the collection and analysis of dust samples at various locations of an operating mine production section.

MOST OF THE key items in the bituminous-coal and Lignite industry declined in 1954 compared with 1953. Production, consumption, exports, average value per ton, men working, and days worked all declined; however, in the field of mechanization, the percentages mechanically loaded, mechanically cleaned, mined by auger, and mined by stripping all increased, as did production per men per day. Production.-The output of soft coal in 1954-391.7 million tons- was 14 percent less than the 457.3 million tons produced in 1953. The lower production in 1954 was due largely to a sharp reduction in consumption in the United States and to a drop in exports.

From September 1978 to December 1983, ESD Corporation (formerly a Division of FMC Corporation) undertook the development and testing of a bidirectional auger under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy. Underground testing began in August 1981 at Peabody Coal Company's Marissa Mine near Marissa, Illinois. The auger was developed to increase mine production and coal recovery without increasing land subsidence. It bored 4-foot-diameter by 10-foot-deep holes into pillars on 7-foot centers (each hole recovering 5 tons). All operating during this test was performed by maintenance personnel with the goal of finding ways to increase the machine potential. The maximum excavation rate achieved was 1.4 tons per minute. It was concluded that the concept of drilling short holes to extract coal from underground pillars without surface subsidence was practicable with a wheel mounted auger, but that more power was desirable for this mine, and that the hydraulically driven augering system that provided experimental versatility was not sufficiently reliable for production use.

This report describes the carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of McDowell County, W. Va. Coals from 14 coal beds were selected for study: Upper Cedar Grove, Middle Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Eagle, Douglas, Iaeger, Sewell, Welch, Beckley, Fire Creek and Pocahontas Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 9. Selection was based upon estimated minable reserves. McDowell County coals rank either as high-volatile A, medium-volatile, or low-volatile bituminous coal, and this variation in rank is reflected in the wide diversity of the carbonization properties of the coals. All coals tested were either satisfactory as mined or could be upgraded to meet present chemical standards for metallurgical coke; the coals produced strong coke, as determined by ASTM shatter and tumbler tests.

[Investigation of mine land characteristics, evaluation of irrigation systems, and evaluations by the mining industry, determined that irrigation is a feasible method for aiding revegetation of coal mined lands in western arid and semi-arid regions. The various regions studied displayed a commonality of characteristics which enables, independent of the site or region, the recommendation of solid set irrigation. Irrigation should be supplemental by complimenting natural precipitation and be should implemented on a temporary basis.]

This report describes laboratory studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the spontaneous combustion of U.S. coals. Approximately 11 pet of U.S. underground coal mine fires are attributed to spontaneous combustion. The relative self-heating tendencies of 24 coal samples were evaluated in an adiabatic heating oven. Minimum self-heating temperatures (SHT's) in the oven ranged from 350 C for a lignite and high-volatile C bituminous (hvCb) coal, to 1350 C for two low-volatile bituminous (lvb) coals. An empirical expression was determined predicting a bituminous coal's minimum SHT in the adiabatic oven based on the coal's dry ash-free oxygen content. Several factors that can affect the self-heating process were also evaluated. The self-~eating tendency of a coal increased when the coal was dried and exposed to humidified air, and was dependent on the particle size and oxygen concentration of the air. A new moderate-scale apparatus is described, in which the self-heating tendencies of larger coal samples, 3 kg, can be evaluated. The minimum SHT's of two coals were determined and the results were in good agreement with those found in the adiabatic oven. Finally, results of a test in the moderate-scale apparatus indicated a strong dependence of the self-heating rate of a low rank coal on the moisture content of the air.

Thermal, mechanical, and physical properties of virgin and heat-treated Pittsburgh seam coal were determined as part of a comprehensive study of combustion of monolithic coal block. The information was sought to help characterize pyrolysis and combustion processes in underground coal mine fires but should also prove useful in the study of in situ and surface coal gasifiers. Measured properties include thermal conductivity, specific heat, thermal expansion, density, compressive and tensile strength, porosity, and permeability. The transport property data were obtained (when feasible) in two mutually perpendicular directions of the anisotropic virgin coal material, and coal samples carbonized for 5 hours at temperatures of 350° C, 475° C, 500° C, 650° C, and 850° C. Other coals (Pocahontas No. 3, Sewell, and Illinois No. 6 seams) were investigated for porosity and relative permeability. Interdependence among all properties was evident from the results; however, only a few correlations could be developed owing to inhomogeneity of coal material and specimen variation, which had the effect of reducing the accuracy of measurement and increasing data scatter.

A practical method has been developed and field tested which provides an estimate of the bearing capacity of mine roof and floor. The relationship between penetration of the strata and imposed loads is determined by in situ tests. Information of this type is needed to determine the maximum allowable pressure that may be applied by self-advancing supports on roof and floor of a longwall face without causing a punching type of failure.

The results of a four-year research effort aimed at developing a practical and effective electronic system for monitoring safety conditions throughout a coal mine by displaying, at a central location, remotely measured parameters are described. This document reports on the design details of the sensor packages and the data processing program used in an experimental monitoring system. The results of special ventilation monitoring experiments and several sub-system considerations are also described.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary and detailed exploratory examinations of iron and copper ores on Prince of Wales Island have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines from early in 1942 until the end of 1944. Among these investigations was that of the Jumbo magnetite deposit, which was visited by Stephen P. Holt, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, during a preliminary examination of the Copper Mountain and Jumbo properties September 15 to 18, 1943, During the months of June, July, and August 1944, a more detailed examination, which consisted essentially of mapping and sampling, was made by the authors working in conjunction with George C. Kennedy of the Geological Survey, Geological, topographical, and dip-needle contour maps were made of the area, and 97 channel samples were cut.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The four elements fluorine (F), chlorine (C1), bromine (Br), and iodine (I) form the most intimate family in the entire system of elements and are grouped under the name "halogens" or salt formers (by derivation from the Greek). The first member of this family, fluorine, is the most chemically active element known; and fluorspar, and to a less extent cryolite, the chief sources of fluorine, are important commercial minerals. Fluorine occurs in nature chiefly in combination with sodium as common salt, but it also appears in other natural compounds in sea water, salt-well brines, and bedded deposits. In addition to common salt, various compounds containing chlorine (chlorides) have long been consumed by industry on a large scale, and within the last two decades that element itself has come rapidly into prominence as one of the leading industrial chemicals. Bromine and iodine, the two retaining members of the family, are less abundant in nature and less readily isolated and in consequence of their relatively high price have found few industrial uses, being consumed chiefly in medicine and in photography. Bromine, however, is now entering the industrial field to a considerable extent, due to the rapidly growing use of ethylene dibromide in anti-knock compounds for gasoline. The present paper is devoted to bromine and iodine, but in order to compre- hend the physical and chemical characteristics of these two elements (and hence their potential economic significance) it is convenient to consider them as members of the family series to which they belong. The family relationship of the halogens is illustrated by the following:4 (1) The similarity in the chemical and physical properties of the elements and their corresponding compounds is such that the prop- erties of any one member of the family can be said to summarize or rather to typify the properties of all the other members, although fluorine diverges a little in some of its properties. (2) The gradual transition of chemical and physical properties is such that if the elementa are arranged in order F, Cl, Br, I the variation in any particular property in passing from fluorine to iodine nearly always proceeds in the same order, and that is the order of their atomic weight. Taxing almost any property and comparing its magnitude in passing from the element fluorine to iodine, or from the fluorides to the iodides, a similar graiation will be observed. Thus, take the melting point of the cadmium, calcium, barium, sodium, or potassium salts, in degrees.

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 27,034-hectare Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area and the 16,544-hectare Breadwinner study area. There were approximately 535 lode and placer claims in or partially in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area, and 84 lode and placer claims in or partially in the Breadwinner study area. In the Atlanta and Rocky Bar mining districts, both adjacent to and in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area, 30,232.4 kg (972,000 02) of gold and 62,838.3 kg (2,020,000 02) of silver had been produced. Most of this production came from outside the study area. Placer properties adjacent to (and a few in) the Breadwinner study area had production of 93.1 kg (2,992 oz) of gold and 20.0 kg (642 02) of silver. Twelve properties in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area have potential for resources; eleven have alteration and/or mineralization similar to that found at Atlanta with potential for gold, silver, and tungsten resources, and one has alteration and mineralization associated with polymetallic vein type deposits with potential for gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and tungsten resources. Adjacent to the study area, large bars of gold-bearing gravel can be found along the Middle Fork Boise River. Four properties in the Breadwinner study area have potential for mineral resources; one has alteration and mineralization associated with skarn, polymetallic vein, and, possibly, copper-molybdenum and molybdenum porphyry types of deposits; two have alteration and metal assays associated with polymetallic vein, and possibly copper-molybdenum and molybdenum porphyry types of deposits; and one has alteration and mineralization similar to that found at Atlanta. These four have potential for gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, and tungsten resources Adjacent to and extending into the Breadwinner study area are large bars of gold-bearing gravel along North and Middle Forks Boise River.

Wyoming is estimated to have more than 700 million tons and Utah more than 2.5 billion tons of +10 percent P2O6 phosphate rock considered to have some future economic potential. In Wyoming, the +24 and +18 percent P205 rock potential resources total nearly 250 and 450 million tons, respectively. In Utah, the +31, +24, and +18 percent rock total approximately 33 million, 222 million, and 2.2 billion tons, respectively. These resources are all located above the local drainage levels and do not include latent resources. All of the mining and beneficiation of phosphate rock in the two States is done by San Francisco Chemical Co. The facilities include open pit mines at Vernal, Utah, and Leefe, Wyo.; an underground mine in the Crawford Mountains, Utah, and beneficiation plants at Leefe and Vernal. One of the principal markets for the phosphate rock is Western Phosphates, Inc., fertilizer plant at Garfield, Utah. Recent exploration and development has been under-taken by different companies in the Southeastern Wind River Range, Sublette Range, and Crawford Mountains. The facilities at Leefe and Vernal are in the process of expansion. Some of the areas of western Wyoming contain vast quantities of phosphate rock in minable units, but, because of their remote location, are classed as latent areas. In these areas, there are estimated to be about 700 million, 2 billion, and 3 billion tons of phosphate rock in the +24, +18, and +10 percent P205 grade classes, respectively. The Snake River Range of Idaho and Wyoming is also estimated to contain roughly 21, 106, 177, and 214 million tons of potential resources in the +31, +24, +18, and +10 grade categories, respectively. This area also contains a large amount of latent rock in the more remote areas.

This paper deals principally with the retreating method of mining as applied in the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co.'s deep Conglomerate mine, pointing cut some of the difficulties encountered in deep mining and describing the particular methods used at Calumet to carry on a large-scale operation at great depth with a minimum hazard factor. The circular is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs which is being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines.
