Considerable attention has been, and is being, given to the physics of water-films associated with bubble interactions at surfaces. In contrast, little information on the chemistry of such films has been reported. This communication reports a method using sum frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) to describe hydrogen bonding of interfacial water molecules in water films created with bubbles at hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. The SFVS spectra of water films at hydrophilic silica surfaces differ significantly from the spectra of water at a hydrophobic silica surface. The SFVS spectra indicate that a very ordered water structure exists in water films at the hydrophilic silica surface during contact with a bubble and that the extent of hydrogen bonding increases with an increase in contact pressure. Such structural considerations as well as repulsive electrostatic and Van der Waals forces account for film stability for a bubble at the hydrophilic silica surface. In contrast, the SFVS spectra of water at a hydrophobic silica surface show a lack of hydrogen bonding and are characterized by a distinct absorption at about 3700 cm-1 similar to the spectrum of the air/water interface. These results suggest the presence of a water void, or water exclusion zone, at the hydrophobic surface, as supported by X-ray reflectivity measurements reported in the literature, by atomic force microscopy, and by the results from molecular dynamics simulations. Of course the water film at the hydrophobic surface is unstable with film thinning and rupture upon bubble contact. Under these circumstances it is shown that an attractive Van der Waals force between the bubble and the hydrophobic surface can be expected when the water exclusion zone is taken into consideration. As the thickness of the water exclusion zone increases to a thickness corresponding to the size of nano bubbles, the calculated attractive Van der Waals force increases. For the first time, the idea of sustainable development was recognised at a high political level at the UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 (UNEP, 1992). Then the governments of the world committed themselves to promote sustainable development in their national activities and international co-operation. In 2001, the European Council approved the EU Strategy for Sustainable Development (European commission, 2011). This complements and supports the EU?s so-called Lisbon Strategy (European council, 2000) on competitiveness. The revised Strategy for Sustainable Development was approved in June 2006. Recently sustainability has had an important role in policy and decision-making while the public awareness towards limits of the environment has been rising. However, the indicators of industrial sustainability satisfy primarily the needs of corporate management and global investors. The information is often broad and non-specific and might occasionally even give a false impression. Moreover, contradictions between environmental, economical and social aspects also point out the unreliability of existing sustainability indexes. Therefore, the current state of affairs serves the interests of neither the industry nor the policy makers. Current corporate sustainability indexes and indicator systems need to be assessed with scientific methods encompassing the identification of their strengths and weaknesses. This requires quantitative and qualitative assessment and synthesis of existing indexes and indicator systems, providing new data on the functionality of existing corporate sustainability indicators. Therefore, the assessment lays the foundation for the development of new, more balanced sustainability index. Our first aim in this multidisciplinary article is to analyse existing global sustainability indexes for process industry. Second, we will introduce a first version of a new sustainability index for process industry, which includes the environmental, social and economic impacts of the plant, as well as legislation aspects.

The proposal of the nip zone angle determination in HPGR crushing process is presented in the paper. Knowledge of the nip zone angle value, in turn, makes it possible to determine the real maximum pressing force in the high-pressure comminution. Two methods of determination of this maximum pressure were proposed and verified. The first method is based on the roll?s geometry, and the change of the HPGR chamber?s volume together with the roll rotation, while the second one considers the outlet gap width impact. Results of the nip zone angle calculations according to both methods are similar and show convergence with the real operating conditions. The verification was carried out in a piston-die press, and experimental results show that methodology of the nip zone angle determination presented in the paper has its practical confirmation. A proper determination of the nip zone border makes it possible to calculate the comminution probability of given type of material and is a basis for the HPGR crushing process modeling and optimization. "Zeta potential of synthetic monazites presenting various compositions were measured to investigate the effect of the main lanthanides substitutions on electrophoretic mobility and resulting IEP. The measurements are performed in a CO2 depleted and enriched solutions showing both reduced influence of monazite chemistry and strong influence of ions resulting from the solubilization and dissociation of CO2. The influence of oleic acid on the electrophoretic mobility of those monazites was also investigated. The influence of pH on oleate adsorption was studied using a bubble/particle adhesion system. Adhesion strength measurements were performed on pure synthetic monazite-(Ce) and monazite-(La). An extensive thermodynamic model of monazite in water was developed to highlight correlations between lanthanides hydroxides/carbonates species concentrations in the bulk solution and oleate adsorption. Based on electrophoretic measurements, advanced thermodynamic consideration and adhesion measurements, further details of the oleate adsorption model on monazite surface were proposed.INTRODUCTION Electrophoretic and potentiometric data on monazite and, a fortiori, other rare earth semi-soluble salts such as bastnaesite are extremely erratic (Chelgani et al. 2015). The isoelectric points measured with electrophoretic mobility methods range from 4.7 to 6.5 although sporadic data indicates an IEP (isoelectric point) far from that range. Different explanations are proposed in the literature to explain the IEP variability notably the numerous chemical substitutions that frequently occurred within monazite crystal lattice (Chelgani et al. 2015). Based on lanthanides speciation diagram, several authors highlighted the influence of specific lanthanide species on the flotation performance of rare earth semi-soluble salts when carboxylate or hydroxamate collectors are used. Although lanthanides ions have a great affinity for carbonates groups (Kragten et Decnop-Weever 1987), lanthanide (hydrogen) carbonates were not implemented in speciation diagrams. In this work, an advanced thermodynamic model is proposed to highlight correlation between flotation performance and lanthanide species predominance but also concentrations. Qualitative measurement of the monazite surface hydrophobicity are performed through tests of adhesion of coarse monazite particles onto bubbles. Since flotation and microflotation technics are highly influenced by hydrodynamic parameters, this method was investigated to obtain a sharp contrast between appropriate and inappropriate pH conditions. This paper is to investigate 1) the effect of lanthanides substitution on monazite surface properties through zeta potential measurements, 2) the mechanism of adsorption of carboxylates on monazite surfaces and 3) the effect of CO2 on monazite surface properties and carboxylates adsorption."

Froth flotation is a selective separation process and rarely used for beneficiation of limestone in the world as compared to other minerals and also mostly known conventional methods of up gradation of ROM including wobbling, selective mining, sorting, preblending etc. Limestone is mainly used in the manufacture of cement, steel and chemical industries. High grade limestone deposits are depleting day by day and the requirement of the industries have to be met by beneficiating the low grade limestone deposits in the world. And because of marginal quality of limestone, it cannot be directly used in cement industry. At ACC Madukkarai cement works, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, full fledged mineral beneficiation process is adopted to enhance the quality of low grade lime stone from 38-42 % CaO to 45-47 % CaO and silica reduced from 19-22 % to 11-13 % by use of oleic acid (commercial grade and vegetable origin) 0.38 kg/ton of limestone and caustic soda 0.05 kg/ton of limestone. As core part of flotation column, aerator has been always priority research. A new type of porous aerator made of stainless sintered microcellular material is designed , which diameter is between 20µm to 40µm. High bubble surface area flux is obtained at low air pressure 20kPa by this type of aerator in water. In order to extend its applied range ,experiments were carried out in alkali slurry (pH=12) , resulting with porous aerator clogged after working 20 days . Sampling the cross-section of aerator detected by microscope and X-ray diffraction ,the reason clogging was found. Then plugging aerator was reactivated after putting it in acidic liquor treated by ultrasonic for about ten minutes. On-line aerator maintenance can be done in no down time , and it can be repetitive-used after recovered ,so reduced capital costs.

"Copper(II) can be recovered or removed from acidic copper sulfate solutions as cuprite or metallic copper powder by reduction with carbohydrates (van der Weijden et al., 2001, 2002). In order to make this process suitable for a commercial scale pipe reactor, process conditions and reactor configuration need to guarantee proper throughput of the dilute suspension. This is where crystal engineering also comes into view. Copper powder characteristics, such as size and shape of particles, influence the tendency to adhere to reactor walls and to agglomerate, which in turn influence the throughput. Furthermore, separation, drying, packaging and product quality, are dependent on the powder characteristics.In this paper the effect of both chemical and physical parameters on the shape and size of particles were systematically studied in a number of autoclave experiments. These parameters include mixing, Cu(II) concentration, pH, temperature, seeding, use of additives and reactor materials. Additionally, Monte Carlo simulations of copper growth inside a Kenics static mixer were made. Results show that the use of additives, and the use of static mixers influence particle characteristics the most."

Crystalline silicon solar cells are the most important solar cells manufactured today. This will most probably remain the situation the next decade. The future silicon feedstock is most likely not reject from the production of electronic-grade silicon. There will probably be a more direct solar-grade silicon route, excluding the electronic-grade silicon "detour". Estimated global solar energy demand in 2001 required approximately 5,500 tons of silicon feedstock. This required 65,000 tons of quartz. If the trend continues, the solar energy demand in 2010 would require approximately 30,000 tons of silicon feedstock and 350,000 tons of quartz, although the need for quartz probably will be lower than this. Quartzite has been regarded as the most suitable primary raw material used in the silicon solar cell production chain. This may change as the raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. In addition, quartz or other silica-containing minerals from other rocks may be of a higher purity or contain lesser amounts of the most harmful elements. This favours increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar silicon feedstock production chain.

The dry coal preparation technology based on air dense medium fluidized bed is an innovative dry highly efficient technology of coal by introducing fluidization technology into beneficiation.. A modularized 40-60 tones/hr system (KZX-40) with an air dense medium fluidized bed separator was established. The construction cost of the modularized system is only 1/3 of the traditional wet heavy-medium coal preparation plant construction cost with the same capacity, and the consumption of dense medium can be reduced by 50%-60%. The footprint and volume of the system are decreased by 75% and by 89.81%, respectively. These facts show the improved intensity, efficiency and economy of modularized coal preparation technique. The modularized KZX-40 system can be used to separated 50-6 mm coal over a separation density range of 1.3-2.2g/cm3 depending on the variation of <1mm fine coal content. The separation efficiency of the system was investigated at low and high separation densities by float-sink experiments. The partition curve of the products at low separation density shows that the separation density (d) is 1.33g/cm3, and the probable error (E) value is 0.05g/cm3. Using 50-6mm coal with an ash content of 55.35% as feedstock, at a high separation density of 1.61g/cm3, the clean coal with an ash content of 14.67% and the tailing with an ash content of 71.26% are produced with an E value of 0.06g/cm3. It is clear that the modularized KZX-40 system is suitable for separating 50-6mm coal effectively. During the dry coal preparation process, the dust is removed by the bag collector and recycled back into the separator. So the system has the advantages to work without environmental pollution and water. The modularized system greatly reduces the construction and operating costs and decreases the area and volume required, compared with wet dense medium system. "The Olserum deposit located in Sweden hosts an indicated mineral resource of 4.5 million tonnes over 0.6 % TREO, exhibiting a relatively high proportion of HREE. Beneficiation of a composite drill core sample was studied in the flowsheet of magnetic separation of magnetite followed by REE minerals flotation. Primary testwork was performed to select an effective REE mineral collector and then the parameters of grinding size, collector and depressant dosages, slurry pH and density, conditioning time and temperature, and flotation time were tested for optimization of REE flotation. The studies of process mineralogy showed that the REE-bearing minerals monazite, xenotime and apatite were successfully enriched from the concentrations of 0.6%, 0.31% and 2.6% in the feed to those of 17.0%, 8.9% and 65.0% in the concentrate with the recoveries of 79.0%, 81.3% and 71.0%, respectively. INTRODUCTION The Olserum deposit located in Sweden comprises lower grade placer material with higher grade apatite-magnetite veins and hosts an indicated mineral resource of 4.5 million tonnes at 0.6% TREO, with 34% of that being HREO (EURARE, 2017). The mineralization was studied by Andersson et al. (2018). At early stage, high-temperature REE is characterized by abundant monazite-(Ce) and xenotime-(Y) coexisting with fluorapatite and subordinate amounts of (Y,REE,U,Fe)-(Nb,Ta) oxides. During a subsequent stage, allanite-(Ce) and ferriallanite-(Ce) formed locally, partly resulting from the breakdown of primary monazite-(Ce). Alteration of allanite-(Ce) or ferriallanite-(Ce) to bastnäsite-(Ce) and minor synchysite-(Ce) at lower temperatures represents the latest stage of REE mineral formation. The mineralogy and beneficiation were firstly studied by GTK Mintec in the EURARE project for a composite drill core sample. The Olserum is considerably smaller than the Norra Kärr deposit. However, REE are hosted by xenotime and monazite, both of which have well established processing pathways, and meanwhile, the Olserum has a high contribution of the high value critical REE (dysprosium (Dy), yttrium (Y), neodymium (Nd) and terbium (Tb)), which provide a unique advantage for its exploration (Tasman Metals Ltd., 2013). On installing the Metso Superior MK 54x75? primary gyratory crusher in Nkomati mine the crusher experienced severe power spikes greater than 1000kW which subsequently led to the crusher tripping under load while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ores. Likewise significant losses in throughput were also experienced while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ore types. Interestingly the crusher was capable of processing the PCMZ ores without experiencing any power spikes or losses in throughput. Investigations into the challenges faced by the crusher while processing Nkomati?s MMZ ores were conducted using the DEM model in conjunction with the fast breakage model present in Metso?s High Fidelity Simulator. The intentions of the study were to establish the most suitable operating conditions or cavity design that would potentially enhance the performance of the crusher. Likewise an understanding of the effects the feed conditions (size distribution and hardness) had on the crusher?s performance was established. Ore characterization tests were conducted on Nkomati?sPyroxenite, Diabase, Calc silicate and quartzite ores which were from Nkomati?s MMZ ore body. The ore characterization tests conducted were drop weight tests, slow compression tests and elastic modulus tests. Four simulations were conducted used the existing cavity design with various open side settings (OSS) and throws. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s operating conditions on its performance. Four additional simulations were conducted on two cavity designs with reduced volumes. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s cavity design on the crusher?s performance. Thus through the simulations a better understandings of the impact of the crusher design, operating conditions and feed conditions on the crushers performance. Furthermore an analysis of the crusher?s performance was made which was used as a basis for comparisons with the base case simulation. An attempt has been made to carry out qualitative assessment of mine water discharges from the different mines of West Bokaro Coalfields of Hazaribag district of Jharkhand, India. A total of 33 mine water samples were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), major cations (Ca, Mg, Na, K), major anions (HCO3, SO4, Cl, NO3), and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, Co, As). The hydrochemical data has been evaluated in terms of major ion chemistry, solute acquisition processes and suitability of mine water for domestic, industrial and irrigation uses. The pH of the analyzed mine waters varies from 5.27?8.43 indicating acidic to alkaline nature of the water. The electrical conductivity (EC) values varied from 276 µScm-1 to 1598 µScm-1 for measured samples and spatial differences between the EC values reflects the wide variation in lithology, surface activities and hydrological regime prevailing in the region. The anion chemistry of the analyzed water samples shows the dominance of SO4 and HCO3 with a minor contribution from Cl, NO3 and F. The observed high values of sulphate in the mine water of the area may be attributed to the oxidative weathering of pyrites. On average chloride is contributing 5% of the total anionic balance (TZ-). Fluoride and nitrate have low concentrations and on average contributing <2% the total anions. The cation chemistry indicates that 79% of the samples are Ca>Mg>Na>K, while the 6% belong to Ca>Na>Mg>K and 1% of Ca>Mg>K>Na. Weathering of rock forming minerals and cation exchange processes normally control the levels of these cations. Concentrations of some heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr) are found to be well above the prescribed permissible levels recommended for the drinking water. The water quality assessment for drinking purposes indicates that most of the mine water having high TDS, total hardness (TH) and sulphate concentrations. This suggests that mine water of the study area is not suitable for direct use in drinking and domestic purposes and needs a proper treatment before its utilization. The assessment of water for irrigation uses show that the water is good to permissible quality and can be used for irrigation uses. However, high values of salinity, %Na, SAR, RSC and Mg-hazard at certain sites restrict its suitability for agriculture uses. Coal is the most widely used fossil fuel in the world, providing more than 25% of world?s electrical power. Since, the behavior of coal particles in crushing and grinding circuits, concentration operations, and solid-liquid separations is strongly dependent on size, a reliable and accurate measurement of particle size and particle size distribution (PSD) is a vital aspect in coal cleaning. This paper presents a method for the characterization of ground coal particles using image analysis. We utilized a machine vision (MV) approach that used a document scanner as the imaging device and a user-coded ImageJ plug-in that processed the image and automated the PSD analysis and output results in textual and graphical forms. This approach used a sum of volumes (SVolume) as weighting factor for particle length as the primary dimension of analysis and was successfully applied to ground coal. The plug-in was further improved for computational performance in this study. Mechanical sieving (MS) was also used to compare the MV results. MV results showed that the PSD of ground coal followed a uni-modal normal distribution, and the log-normal plot against particle size exhibited a linear trend for most of the range. MS results, however, had three linear segments, when the width-based sieving results were transformed to lengths by applying the shape factor (width/length), but a definite deviation between the PSD plots was observed. This study demonstrates successful application of the MV SVolume approach for PSD analysis of ground coal, which can be extended to similar particulate minerals and products. At the pelletizing plant of the Gol-E-Gohar mining and industrial company two parallel dry closed grinding circuits, each with the average throughput of 300 t/h, are used. Each grinding circuit consists of a burner, a dry ball mill (6.2 m×13 m) and an air separator. The ball mill consists of a 2 m-long drying and an 11 m-long grinding chambers. The iron ore concentrate is fed to the drying chamber by a feed chute. The first 1.35 m of the drying chamber consists of 56 flights in two rows to decrease the feed moisture from 5% to below 0.2% and the rest of dryer chamber consists of deflectors to pass the material to the grinding chamber. It was found that when the feed moisture content increased from 1.3% to 3.5%, the throughput decreased by 12% (35 t/h) indicating a low performance of the dryer. Monitoring the wear rate of flights for a period of 12 months showed that the first 0.8 m length of the flights length did not experience any wear. This means that about 59% of flights do not contribute in material distribution and drying. A DEM simulation of feed chute and the drying chamber demonstrated that due to the inappropriate design of feed chute most of materials do not get in touch with the first 0.8 m length of the drying chamber. To overcome this problem, various feed chute designs with different geometries were simulated by the KMPCDEM© software. With the aim of arriving at a proper material trajectory, where the total length of the flights are used, a new feed chute was selected. The simulation results indicated that if the height of the flights is increased from 1.60 to 2.26 m and the slope is increased from 45 to 48 degrees the material arrive at the first 0.48 m of drying chamber. In this manner, the unused part of the drying chamber decreases from 59% to 36% of the length. After installation of the new feed chute, during a period of three months the throughput increased by 36 t/h.

The sizing of crushers depends on the expected crushing forces. However, the crushing forces develop differently with every individual rock while it is compressed by the working surfaces of the crusher. For sizing, this compression process has to be characterized by the maximum crushing force. The maximum crushing force depends on the strength, shape and size of the rock, the amount and velocity of the imposed displacement of the working surfaces of the crusher on the rock and the conditions of the contact surfaces. From experience it is known that the strength of the material and, therefore, the crushing forces depend on the size of the specimen. This dependence is the so called size effect. The determination is based on compression tests. The force development is recorded during the compression of the specimen and for every individual test the maximum force is determined. The occurring maximum crushing forces of several rocks with the same diameter comminuted under the same conditions can be assessed by a mean value and a variance. The relationship between the mean values of the cross section related maximum crushing forces FAmax and the corresponding sizes d of the specimens can then be described by mathematical functions. They are derived from different approaches (phenomenological, statistical and statistical-physical methods). The phenomenological methods are subjective and yield functions depending on the assumptions of a person, whereas the statistical and statistical-physical methods are based on an evaluated function and the optimization of the parameters.

Ore characterisation including mineralogy and beneficiation testwork of an ore is very important for determination of possible products and their quality. The results of such study help in ascertaining the beneficiation process route for the ore. The present study deals with ore characterisation study and beneficiation testwork on the samples of hematite iron ore with goethite impurity. The characterisation study reveals that the hematite is under alteration stage to goethite which has become an integral part of hematite. High goethite/limonite content is enhancing the loss of ignition content of the ore and reducing its Fe content. The findings indicate that in case of hematite iron ore associated with goethite and limonite, it is difficult to achieve high grade of concentrate above 65% Fe. It depends on the amount of goethite and limonite minerals and their association with hematite. These minerals contain aluminous impurities and hence, their rejection becomes essential. Separation of limonite and of goethite to limited extent is possible. In case of goethite, effective liberation is not achieved where it occurs as surface alteration product of hematite grains. The gangue mineral reported are clay and gibbsite, and are closely associated with iron minerals. The test work results indicate the grade and recovery of Fe along with alumina and silica content in lumps, sinter fines and pellet feed fines that can be achieved for the different ore types vis-a-vis the percent of available hematite in the ore. The recovery of iron is dependent on the hematite available and the loss of iron values in tailings is more because of rejection of limonite and goethite.

New technology for on-line particle size analysis of mineral slurries has opened up new applications for particle size measurement. In some cases the particle size distribution of the final concentrate is an important quality issue. This paper discusses established on-line particle size analysis technologies and presents experiences on the use of a new technique employing laser diffraction in several minerals processing operations. The main innovations in the new instrument are a simple dilution system and multiple scattering correction algorithm, which allows wide solids content variations of diluted sample in the measurement cell. Representative sample for laser measurement is produced by a simple and reliable dilution system. The applications discussed are; Blaine number measurement of Fe concentrate before pelletizing, grinding of variable batches of ore and paste thickener control.

In neutral mine pulp, adopt of cationic collector to flotat valleriite, adopt of hyposulphite to depressant pyrite in low alkaline pulp can advance the recovery of copper to 5.06%.

Thiosulfate as an alternative lixiviant for gold has received much attention in recent years due to the growing environmental concerns over the use of cyanide. Cu(II) is used to catalyze the oxidation of gold and ammonia is to stabilize Cu(II) in alkaline solution. However, the presence of Cu(II) enhances the oxidative degradation of thiosulfate. The high consumption of reagents has made thiosulfate leaching uneconomical to date, in comparison with cyanide leaching. Therefore, further investigations are required to leaching under low reagent concentrations over extended periods where reagent consumption is low and gold leaching rate is low as well. It is thus necessary to find additives to enhance gold dissolution in the thiosulfate leaching system. Electrochemical studies using rotating gold disc showed that the oxidation of gold in ammoniacal thiosulfate solution increased significantly in the presence of a small amount of thiourea and the beneficial effect increased with an increase in the thiourea concentration up to 7.2 mM. Thiourea improved gold extraction in the thiosulfate leaching of gold from a sulfide ore under low reagent concentrations. Excessive addition of thiourea inhibited the leaching of the gold ore. The decomposition of thiosulfate was reduced with the presence of thiourea. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated that thiou-rea likely decomposed to sulfide and formed gold sulfide species at the gold surface.

"The triboelectric charge attributes of feldspar, quartz and wollastonite minerals, after contacting different triboecharging medium made of different materials, were considered. Their charge acquisitions by different size fractions of minerals were monitored and accordingly their energetic work function values were estimated. Moreover the separation behaviours of these minerals through the electric field of a laboratory free falling separator were determined and the effects of some chemical reagents on separation their separation characteristics were studied.Finally an attempt was made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a complex silicate ore, containing quartz, feldspars, wollastonite and some other silicates. The results show favourable prospect to apply the triboelectric separation technique for beneficiation such a complex raw material."
