A dynamic, interactive map has been developed of the life cycle of a number of metals, from mining through to minerals processing, metal production, product manufacturing, recovery and waste management. Whilst the existing metal process network and waste management infrastructure provide substantial scope for (product) design, these also limit change due to the complex interdependence of metals, both in production and recovery, and the strong path dependency of industry and infrastructure development. Therefore, models for dynamic simulation were constructed that allow the specification and evaluation of the metal process network and waste management infrastructure ‘products’ over a longer time span. The model has been constructed using a bottom-up approach, to enable assessment of the environmental aspects of metallurgy and to simulate changes in the system structure and technology, i.e. from reactor or individual process step up to integrated material cycles. The model comprises hierarchical mass balances and linear models of individual processes and sub-processes. Thus, at lower system aggregate levels an increasing level of technical detail is represented. Data reconciliation has been used literature data on process feed, products and residue composition to calculate representative and reliable split factors around each (sub-)process. World production figures on process capacity and recovery rates are be used to calculate the relative contribution of processes. The dynamic map is illustrated with a case on the introduction of lead-free solder.

"Dry coal dressing was popular during the 1950.s and 60.s in many parts of the world. The devices mainly used were air jigs and air tables.The increase in ash and moisture content of run-of-mine coals due to the wide advanced mechanisation of mining mechanisation during and after this period led to that pneumatic devices being unable to treat run-of-mine coals with the desired efficiency. Since the 1960.s almost all new coal preparation plants have been based on wet processes that are highly efficient in terms of coal recovery and their ability to handle damp and sticky run-of-mine coals. (Frankland, 1995)However, water is becoming increasingly costly and the disposal of fine products, containing most of the water, is an environmental concern. There would be significant cost savings and a lower total energy consumption if coal could be cleaned dry. Efficient dry coal treatment would be an interesting solution in desert, arid or cold areas.In Germany one dry coal dressing plant is in operation. The process and the advantages and disadvantages are presented below.Further on new developments in the field of dry density separation of coal are reviewed and analysed. Test results of new dry coal separation methods e.g. new developed air jig and magnetic separator are reported."

Geopolymers are novel engineering materials with the potential to play a highly significant role in the transformation of the construction materials and building products industry in the push to-wards sustainable development. These materials are formed by activation of industrial aluminosilicate waste materials such as coal ash or blast furnace slag with alkaline solutions. Some mineral waste can also be used, either as fillers or as reactive components. The use of waste-based geopolymers results in significant (up to 90%) reduction in carbon dioxide emissions when used in cement replacement applications. In addition to the formation of conventional pre-cast products, these high performance mineral binders are ideally suited to use in the conversion or encapsulation of toxic waste, including radioactive waste, due to their chemical stability and resistance to acid attack. It is the aim of this paper to review recent developments on the science underpinning this ?green? technology, and to discuss the technical and commercial drivers governing the large-scale adoption of the technology. Some of the recent fundamental breakthroughs in the study of geopolymer technology at the University of Melbourne will be presented. Despite the complexity of this reactive sol-id-gel system, progress has been made in the development of a thermochemical reaction kinetic model that has been validated using both calorimetric data and synchrotron kinetic data. Geopolymerization is potentially a disruptive technology, so that it is normal to expect strong resistance from established companies in the construction materials industry. It is increasingly necessary that waste generating industries such as mining collaborate with industries such as construction that could utilize this waste. The world?s first full scale geopolymer plant utilizing waste and re-cycled material has been commissioned recently in Melbourne, Australia, so progress on commercialization will also be presented. The authors frequently present keynote lectures on geopolymer science and technology at materials science, ceramics and construction materials conferences. However, this interdisciplinary technology that is still in its infancy, deserves more attention in the mineral processing and mining industry in view of its potential use in the mining industry, and also in view of the importance of mineral processing techniques in recent advances in geopolymers.

The velocity of gas passing through a flotation cell can be estimated by collecting bubbles by natural buoyancy in a closed tube and measuring the rate of pressure increase. The governing equation is derived and verified. Single- and two-tube gas velocity sensors are described. The latter design permits a correction for bulk density and level change during signal collection.

"Traditionally minerals processing equipment, such as jigs, are studied by characterising the feed and products from these processes. With this approach important details on the mechanisms of a process can be overlooked since assumptions have to be made on the internal operations of the equipment. Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) is a non-invasive technique that can be used to track a particle’s movement inside a closed vessel. PEPT makes it possible to observe the inner workings of a process, providing new information that was unattainable only a few years ago. Jigging has long been considered as one of the most difficult mineral processing techniques to model, due to the complexity of the mechanisms contributing to the separation of minerals during the jigging process. In this investigation PEPT was used to study the particle flow inside a laboratory batch jig. The aim was to determine if the particle trajectories could provide new insight into the jigging and its mechanisms. Three dimensional particle trajectories were observed with spatial and temporal resolution high enough to see details of the individual pulses during jigging. It was found that the pulse height is very dependent on the position in the jig bed. The vertical component from the trajectories showed the rate at which particles move through the jig bed (stratification rate) and it was seen that the density of a particle affects the stratification rate more that the particle’s size and that the shape in the range that was tested had little to no influence. Other phenomena such as a circular flow pattern was observed inside the jig and it was found that smaller lower density particles are affected by this circular flow pattern which tend to disperse these particles throughout the jig bed. Visualising the flow inside a jig by means of PEPT has shown to be instrumental in the deeper understanding of the process."

The flotation of nickel sulphide minerals is normally difficult in the presence of serpentine minerals due to the coating of serpentine particles on the nickel mineral surface. To improve the flotation, dispersants such as polyphosphate and carboxy methyl cellulose are normally used to remove the slime coating. However, in the flotation using high ionic strength process water, these dispersants are invalid due to their ionic nature. In this study, a new type of non-ionic dispersants, Pluronic triblock copolymers were examined with an objective of improving the flotation of ultrafine pentlandite (a nickel sulphide mineral) in the presence of lizardite (a serpentine mineral) in saline water. Three Pluronic triblock copolymers varying in solubility and hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) values were studied by flotation tests, settling tests and froth measurement. It was found that two of the copolymers improved pentlandite flotation against lizardite, and one copolymer deteriorated the flotation. The effect of Pluronic triblock copolymers on the flotation was actually linked to their dispersibility and foamability, which were governed by their physical properties. The two copolymers with a higher solubility or HLB value produced more stable mineral suspensions and more stable froth in the flotation resulting in better nickel grade and recovery in both rougher and cleaner flotation. Gold thiosulfate complex is difference with gold cyanide complex, which is easily adsorbed on activated carbon while gold thiosulfate complex cannot be satisfactorily recovered by activated car-bon. However, Gold thiosulfate could be recovered by activated carbon if cyanide is added into the thiosulfate solution. To avoid the cyanide solution, this paper will review several possible processes to recover the gold from thiosuldate solution: such as the cementation with metals, ion exchange resin and solvent extraction. The gold cementation with the powders of zinc, copper, iron and aluminium will be discussed. The advantage and disadvantage of each are compared. The consumption of thiosulfate and copper and feasibility of solution recycling will be discussed. The gold recovery by some ion exchange resins will be suggested. The processing conditions, its applications and the resin elution methods will be presented. The gold recovery by using solvent ex-traction will be reviewed. The processing conditions of solvent extraction process are discussed and compared.

In the selection of copper ? molybdenum concentrates with the use of reagents containing sulfide ion ? sodium sulfide, sodium hydrosulfide etc for depression of copper minerals and pyrites, big part of depressor is oxidized by oxygen, which is dissolving in pulp during aeration with air in flotation machines and it is expended unproductively. This is the main reason for the big expenditures of depressor, reaching up 15~20 kg/t collective concentrate and the high exploitation expenditures for the copper ? molybdenum selection. Effective direction for lowering expenditure of depressor and increasing of the technical ? economical effectiveness of moly production is the conducting of the selection in nitrogen medium. In the paper are shown the results, obtained by applying of this direction in selection of collective copper ? molybdenum concentrate from the porphyry copper deposit ?Ellatzite? ? Bulgaria, in which the ratio Mo:Cu is over 1:120. In laboratory conditions, through comparative experiments in medium of air and nitrogen are defined: expenditure and initial concentration of NaHS in pulp for effective depression of copper minerals and pyrites; kinetics of flotation process of molybdenite; influence of pulp density; emf (negative milivolts) of pulp and the expenditure of nitrogen on tech-nological indexes of molybdenum flotation. When working in nitrogen medium decrease of NaHS in rougher molybdenum flotation from 40% to 45% is settled. When nitrogen is also fed in cleaner stages, the total expenditure of depressor is lowered by 64%. The quality of end molybdenum con-centrate is raised with over 5%. On the ground of the results of laboratory studies and of world practice data, an industrial installation for selection of copper ? molybdenum concentrate in nitrogen medium in Wemco inert ? gas machines.

The performance of flotation machines is closely related to the gas dispersion characteristics achieved in their operation. It is known that frothers play a major role not only in the size distribution of the generated bubble population, but also on the swarm rise velocity. A program to characterize frother effects on two-phase hydrodynamics (air-water) of Jameson cells was undertaken in a fully instrumented pilot unit installed at McGill University. Gas dispersion parameters (gas velocity, gas holdup and bubble size distributions) of the gas-liquid mixture generated in the downcomer were measured after its release into the separation chamber. The unit was operated under different conditions including gas velocity, liquid jet velocity and frother concentration (MIBC). Bubble size distributions for concentrations above the critical coalescence concentration (CCC) were narrow with Sauter mean diameter between 0.6 to 1.3 mm. The bubble size followed the general trend as encountered in other types of flotation machines, i.e., rapid decrease with increasing frother concentrations below 10 µL/L, and almost no change in size for concentrations above 30 µL/L. The CCC was between 10 and 15 µL/L. Strong correlations were found between bubble size and air-to-liquid flow ratio (APR), and between the bulk density of the aerated solution in the separation tank and the vacuum inside the downcomer. An equation is proposed to estimate gas holdup in the separation tank from vacuum and bulk density readings.

Porous carbon adsorbents derived from inorganic materials templates such as zeolite and mesoporous silicate attracted considerable attention in the last decade and got great progress in re-cent years. However, so far almost all of templates used in the process were artificial porous materials; the porous carbons prepared by this method are very costly, which restricts the synthesis and application of templated porous carbons. In order to reduce the cost of templated porous carbons, natural inorganic porous minerals have been taken into consideration, which maybe possible and promising templates to prepare carbon adsorbents. In this work, we describe template process using tubular halloysite, rich mesoporous zeolite and low bulk density diatomite, as exemplars of the categories of inorganic porous templates which we have studied and discussed the effects of different templating structure on the resultant carbons. Two main carbon precursors, sucrose and furfuryl alcohol, were used respectively. The morphology of minerals and corresponding templated carbons were characterized using electron microscopy. The pore structures of minerals and templated carbons were characterised with nitrogen adsorption. The results showed that the morphology and pore structure of porous carbons are in good pertinence to those of corresponding templates. The morphology and pore structure of templated carbons could reflect those of corresponding templates at nanometer level. The templated carbons with high specific surface areas and rich mesopores can be prepared by using these three kinds of natural porous minerals as templates. The higher the surface area and pore volume of the minerals, the higher those of the corresponding carbons. The template carbons from halloysite possessed higher pore volume and mesoporosities. Based on the large mounts of experiment results, a model for the mechanism of resultant nanopores formation has been proposed. The nanopores of templated carbons are mainly composed of three kinds of pores: templated pores formed by removing mineral, hereditary pores formed by inheriting the pores of templates and nanopores formed during carbonization. These three kinds of pores have a close relationship with corresponding template.

"This paper investigates the reverse flotation of hematite in three laboratory flotation cells with very different contacting environments. The main objectives are to investigate the recovery of coarse quartz by flotation and fine hematite by entrainment. The laboratory flotation cells used were the mechanical, oscillating grid and pneumatic cells. The effect of froth height and solid concentration were investigated in the mechanical and pneumatic cells. The effect of impeller speed and energy input were investigated in the mechanical and oscillating grid cells. Froth height results show that coarse quartz particle recovery decreases almost linearly with increasing froth height due to increased detachment of coarse quartz particles in the froth. Fine hematite particle recovery also decreases almost linearly with increasing froth height due to decreased water recovery and associated entrainment. Agitation/energy input results show that coarse quartz particle recovery increases with increasing impeller speed to an optimum, after which this decreases dramatically. The increase is due to improved gas dispersion, generation of smaller bubbles and increased bubble-particle collision and attachment. The decrease is due to significantly increased bubble-particle detachment at higher impeller speeds. The recovery of coarse quartz particles in the OGC is higher than that in the mechanical cell with an optimum at a much lower energy input. Solids concentration results show that both mass recovery and water recovery increase with increasing solid concentrations. The pneumatic cell achieves higher mass recoveries and lower water recoveries than those in the mechanical cell at equivalent solids concentrations and operating conditions. INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a selective process for separating different minerals from each other. The flotation separation efficiency depends on the recoveries of the mineral species by both true flotation and entrainment (Neethling and Cilliers 2009; Wang et al. 2015). Both chemical variables and hydrodynamic conditions within the flotation cell affect the recovery and selectivity of the flotation process. Cationic reverse flotation of hematite is a common method for selective separation of quartz from iron ores to produce pellet feed. The presence of coarse quartz particles in the tailings and fine hematite particles in the concentrate are two major challenges in the reverse flotation of hematite (Vieira and Peres 2007)."

Although the cyanidation process for gold leaching has been applied for more than a hundred years, some aspects of it, such as the passivation of the gold and the depassivating action of heavy metals, are still not well understood. In this work the anodic behaviour and surface composition of gold in alkaline aqueous cyanide with lead additions were investigated using polarization experiments and XPS. It was found that lead in the solution activated the gold at low concentrations, somewhat more positive than the reversible potential for gold, but that the activity again decreased at higher concentrations of lead. The potential range for the activation of the gold coincides with that where underpotential deposition of lead occurs, i.e. –200 to –600 mV(SCE), as indicated by the surface composition of the gold, shown in figure 1. Note that the concentration of lead on the surface of the gold only increased with time in the bulk plating potential range for lead, where gold is not activated by the presence of lead. It is also shown that up to 20 mg/L of lead added to the solution will activate the gold, provided that bulk plating of the lead is avoided. It is also important to avoid reducing conditions during leaching, where bulk plating of lead may occur, if the gold is to be activated by lead to achieve a high leaching rate, as the bulk plated lead screens the surface rather than activating it.

TATA STEEL is the pioneer in coal beneficiation in India. The first coal beneficiation plant was set up in 1951 at West Bokaro and subsequently in 1953 in Jharia. Over the years more beneficiation capacity was added by setting up new coal washeries in both West Bokaro and Jharia, the coal divisions of Tata Steel. currently the beneficiation capacity available is 8.5 mtp aappx Being a captive supplier supplying the coking coal as per demands of our steel works is challenging in the sense that the intent is to leverage the captive raw material advantage and select the best strategy for maximizing value up to steel making. The beneficiation plants were designed to produce clean coal up to 17% ash. With the demand of increasing productivity at the blast furnace the clean coal ash was lowered. subsequently the processes were audited and efficiency improved. The next challenge was to improve the throughputs in the existing plants to maximize the clean coal production. The upgradation was designed in house and implemented to upgrade the plant from nameplate capacity of 2.1 mtpa to 4.5 mtpa while the yearly production targets were also achieved. The presentation will detail the different phases of improvements, process followed, challenges faced, and the results as achieved in the process. Selection of mill size for reducing a feed material of a given size to the desired product size is generally based on the specific energy estimate obtained from Bond test. Over the last thirty years or so, an attempt has been made to develop a more accurate and powerful alternative approach based on the characterization of the particle breakage kinetics and material transport through the mill over a range of operating conditions of interest and correlating the degree of size reduction achieved with the net specific energy input to the mill. Particle breakage kinetics are described in terms of the specific grinding rate and breakage distribution parameters for the individual size fractions. Precise estimates of these parameters and the net energy input to the test ball mill (a laboratory or pilot scale mill) are important for development of desired energy-size correlations. In this context, three tasks are important: (a) preparation of the feed charge, (b) design of batch grinding experiments and (c) computational technique used for estimation of the breakage rate and breakage distribution parameters. This paper highlights several aspects of these three tasks that have been overlooked by researchers working in this field, and describes a more appropriate approach for estimation of model parameters and specific energy input. Several examples are included based on the data available in the literature and those generated in our laboratories to illustrate important points.

The lecture is about the growing role and the evolution of advanced process control (APC) in the mining and mineral processing industry, taking into account major trends in Information Technology. It reflects the standpoint of a team, which has already successfully developed APC technology for more than 20 years. Advanced process control systems tend to rely on combinations of artificial intelligence techniques or algorithms that complement each other and cooperate. Each technique or algorithm makes it possible to use certain type of knowledge about the process, so that the advanced control systems benefit at any time from the combined knowledge of process and control engineers and plant operators, from knowledge derived from past research work and process modeling, from a considerable amount of data provided by advanced instrumentation in real time, and from knowledge that can be extracted automatically and at any time from past data and images. The lecture will first review and compare the role, merits and limitations of algorithms that are used for online decision making in mineral processing plants: expert systems, fuzzy logic, neural networks, soft sensors, optimizers, and MPC controllers. The lecture will also review the role of online image analysis and sound analysis in process control. Recent developments in this area open new dimensions, in particular the ability for advanced process control algorithms to automatically explore the past, move back and forth in time in order to make better informed decisions, and the ability to cooperate with the operators for better performance. Applications will be presented. Recent progress in process simulation makes it possible to design, configure, check, and pre-tune APC systems before plant startup, opening new options for implementing APC. The Indian steel industry is growing at a rapid pace and expected to be the 2nd largest steel producer in the world after China. To cope up with this growth and to sustain it, the industry needs to focus on effective utilization of domestic metallurgical coals. While the importance of indigenous coal has increased, its supply from the domestic sources is declining. This is primarily due to high ash content in Indian coals leading to its difficulty in washing to a low level competitive to imported coals. Non-availability of a suitable beneficiation technology to bring down the ash to such a low level is the other reason. Effective utilization of current technologies has enabled Tata Steel to bring down the ash to 13-16% from its captive collieries. However, further lowering the ash using the conventional beneficiation technologies is difficult and unsustainable. New technologies should be developed for bringing down the ash further. A thrust area research program has been undertaken at Tata Steel for producing clean coal with 8% ash maintaining the yield currently achieved in its washeries. The technologies attempted are based on chemical beneficiation of coal. In leaching process, suitable chemicals are used for extracting ash minerals from the coal. As an alternative process, the combustible part of the coal is being extracted using a suitable organic solvent through an organo-refining process. Both the processes have been successfully developed in the laboratory and are being demonstrated in pilot scales. Various beneficiation processes practiced at Tata Steel including the efforts made for developing new processes for achieving clean coal with 8% ash have been discussed in this paper. Carbonates have gained significant economic importance for the human kind. On one hand over a hundred uses are listed for carbonates. On the other hand, carbonates host base metal deposits. Although the carbonates play a significant part in the development of those deposits, in the mineral processing they consume acid and cause selectivity problems during flotation and leaching. Carbonates also accompany other industrial minerals as waste rock. For all those cases it necessary to find a technique to separate carbonate as early as possible in the processing chain. In this paper, the applicability of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) sorting for the separation of carbonates is discussed. NIRS sorting is a sensor-based sorting technique, in which particles are singularly detected by a sensor and then rejected by an amplified mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic process. This technique can for example be implemented in the process as a pre-concentration step for coarse particle sizes up to 300 mm. NIRS sorting discriminates among materials based on the difference that exist between their spectral properties in the near-infrared (NIR). Vibrations of molecular bonds in carbonates cause characteristic spectral properties in the NIR, which makes carbonates detectable, possible to identify, distinguish and separate from other rock materials. The spectral properties can also be used to distinguish between different carbonate minerals and mixtures. If the spectral variations are large enough for detection, sorting based on NIRS is possible. Feasibility studies on sensor-based separation of carbonates in the processing of talc, borate, fluorite, marble, zinc-oxides, copper sulphide and iron ore as well as the discrimination of calcite and dolomite mixtures are conducted and indicate the high potential of NIRS sorting in the minerals industry. This presentation identifies how mineral (coal included) processing profession should look at the challenges (threats) being faced by mineral industry. Presently, the focus is more on supply and demand on minerals. In addition, the R&D activities in the chain of mine-to-metal are paying more attention (if not only on) the processes being adopted, development of new equipments and modeling and simulation. But the profession is grossly ignoring aspects such as impact of the processes on other resources, of the ways we extract, use and dispose them socio-economically and efficiently. A business model which may encompass all these dimensions are essential for the sustainable development of mineral industry and a possible approach in this direction is presented. To start with, for the sustainable growth and existence, the profession must be aware of the prospective impacts of their activities on critical factors such as ? political (changing government policies), geographical (environment, land, water and habitat), which have major bearing on the survival and growth of the industry. Mineral Processing professionals have to join hands with mining engineers to answer some relevant questions related to the impact of mineral industry on society. Mining can become economically viable only if mineral processing engineers come out with innovative solutions to reduce capital and operating costs. The solutions have to be adoptable and practically feasible so that industry looks at us for directions. In fact, we have to move towards beneficiation of nano particles striving towards zero waste. Some of the gaps in the knowledge of procedures being followed in the design and operation of processing plants are highlighted. Enhancing the knowledge base for solving unexplored possibilities, solutions to evolve sustainable development measures which demands innovation both at academic and practicing levels is the need of the future. Well-structured academic programmes are to be formulated so that the graduates of these programmes can make an effort to look at processes/concepts with a new insight and approach; the profession should excite the young brains with challenges. R&D funding agencies have to have a long-term perspective on mineral processing so that closer interactions between academic institutes, industry and R&D organizations are sustainable and that innovations are at least a few years ahead of needs of future challenges.
