Nuclear logging was tested for the in situ determination of Fe, Si, and Al in iron ore blastholes with field tests at the BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Mount Waleback Mine. Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) was used to determine percentages of Fe and Si while natural gamma logging was employed for the determination of Al. The accuracy given by nuclear logging is comparable to the accuracy provided by the laboratory analysis which was determined by taking the average of four samples collected from the cuttings deposited on the surface around the perimeter of a drill hole. The work also indicated that there is a chance of determining Al by PGNAA.

This paper reviews the development and operation of a small underground tin mine in NE Tasmania. Tin mineralisation was discovered in the Lottah area in the 1880s with early alluvial and eluvial workings leading to the development of large low grade open pit operations. Apart from short lived activities operations ceased in 1915. Intensive exploration in 1978 - 1981 outlined substantial tonnages of low grade tin mineralisation (0.2% Sn) of open pit material. An underground ore body was also located (800 000 tonnes 0.6 per cent Sn). Spectrum Resources Australia Pty Limited acquired a 98 per cent interest in the property in 1988. Mine and mill development began in early 1989 based on an underground mine utilising trackless mining using room and pillar with fill stoping. The milling circuit involves primary jaw crushing, Barmac secondary crushing to 1 mm, Mogensen and DSM screens with jigs and tables to make a wet concentrate. Final tin concentrates are produced by high tension and magnetic separation. Planned production rates are 500 t/day with a mine life of six to seven years.

Experiments conducted at Tahmoor Colliery, Sydney Basin, have demonstrated the variability in chemical and isotopic composition of seam gases issuing from boreholes in the Bulli seam and desorbing from lump coal from the same source.From this work it appears that an immediate preferential release of methane accompanies the physical disturbance of the coal seam by penetration with development or drilling or by detachment. In addition, both early released methane and carbon dioxide are depleted in 13C relative to later desorbed gases, therefore the analyses of gas samples taken after such events may not reflect the true bulk composition of the undisturbed seam gas in situ. A method for overcoming this problem by taking gas samples at depth in the "steady state" is proposed.

The great problem at Port Pirie and many other lead smelters has always been to keep the lead content of the slags down to a low level. This has been done in the past largely by empirical methods, the lead content varying from less than 1 per cent to over 4 per cent, the more usual figure being something under 2 per cent. Subsidiary to this, but of major importance in the future, was the extraction of the considerable quantities of zinc in the slag. At this stage little was known about the constitution of the slags apartfrom their chemical composition. Some early work on slag constitution was carried out in the B.H.A.S. Research Laboratories between 1919 and 1921, but except for a microscopic examination of a few thin sections the greater part of this investigation wasdevoted to the recovery of the zinc content of the slag by leaching methods.In 1949, therefore, it was decided to initiate a programme of fundamental research into the constitution and properties of the lead blast furnace slags. The information thus gained would give a clearer picture of reactions taking place in the slag, both in the blast furnace and during dezincing.There was also the hope that these results would lead to improved industrial techniques resulting in smaller lead losses, and, taking the long-term view, to efficient methods of producing zinc from the slags.A series of investigations was therefore begun at various centres over a period of time. THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan ore body presents problems other than those for mining only. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and from highly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal Of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. No one process, product or effect of the minerals sector can be viewed in isolation when addressing sustainable development. Meaningful assessments of the minerals sector require that its processes and production are drawn together in a generic framework that gives a holistic view of its performance and progress. Lifecycle Assessment is increasingly accepted as an appropriate means of constructing such a framework. It is a step beyond using the simplistic concept of the triple bottom line of social, environmental and economic performance to drive and communicate sustainable development. However, fundamental questions need to be raised about the scope and purpose of lifecycle assessment, such as what effects and performances should be assessed, for whom should they be assessed, and what performance indicators should be used and how should they be selected. The principles of eco-efficiency, industrial ecology, The Natural Step (TNS) and other pertinent philosophies and initiatives driving mineral sector sustainable development are outlined to support a lifecycle stewardship vision for the minerals sector. Articulating this vision through a holistic lifecycle indicator system showing inputs and outputs, natural partnerships, effects on community, environment and economy facilitates recognition of problems, opportunities and partnerships that can be usefully pursued.

Platiniferous horizons such as the Merensky Reef that are mined chiefly for their PGE contents constitute one end member of a continuum of Ni-Cu-PGE sulfide deposits; Ni-(Cu) sulfide deposits in which the PGE may or may not be by-products represent the other end of this continuum. Although it has long been thought that PGE-rich sulfides can only be developed by magma mixing in large magma chambers, new PGE data for the Bushveld Complex suggests an alternate model to account for origin of mineralization in the worldÆs most important Pt producer. Briefly, this model suggests that PGE-rich sulfides were initially deposited at depth below the Bushveld Complex as a result of interaction of a S-undersaturated mantle magma with S-rich crustal rocks. These PGE-rich sulfides were subsequently re-dissolved by a second magma, which introduced the PGE into the Bushveld Complex magma chamber, where the PGE-rich reefs were formed due to cooling of these magmas. If this model is correct, it means that large layered mafic/ultramafic intrusions are not a prerequisite for the formation of economic PGE-rich deposits. Exploration for Merensky Reef-type PGE deposits can be greatly facilitated by documenting variations in the background PGE contents of non-mineralized rocks collected on traverses across mafic/ultramafic intrusions; the mineralized horizons occur at cross-overs in ratios such as Pd/Cu, Pd/Se and Pd/S.

In the estimation of reserves the known values of the variables of interest from surrounding drill holes are used to compute or estimate the unknown value of the orebody over a given region or at a given point of interest. The classical means of doing this are: 1. The Polygonal Method û where the region is divided into polygons centred on bore holes, each variable is then assumed to have constant value over each polygon. 2. Inverse distance methods, where the variable is assumed to vary linearly with the distance between the known values of the drill holes. 3. Inverse distance squared method û a quadratic variation is assumed for the variables between the bore holes.

The Tui mine site is situated on the NW flank of Mt. Te Aroha, at approximately 400 m altitude. During underground mining operations two lead-copper-zinc ore bodies were exploited and processed on site. The legacy of the mining operation is a barren dam containing over 100 000 mm of sulphide-rich tailings. The Tui mine site is arguably the worst case of environmental degradation resulting from past mining activity inNew Zealand. Although the impacted area (approximately 4 ha) is extremely small by international standards, acid mine drainage (AMD) emanating from the abandoned tailings dam and mine adits has severely contaminated local streams and prevented natural plant recolonisation of the site for more than 20 years.   The suitability of the tailings as a potential plant growth medium was assessed with the end view of revegetating the tailings dam and alleviating AMD. This paper outlines characterisation work conducted on the tailings and summarises preliminary results from plant growth trials. The tailings contain up to 5% Fe, 1.15 % Pb, and 0.45% Cu in the form of sulphide minerals. The distribution of heavy metals, sulphate and total sulphur with depth indicates that the top 200 - 300 mm of the tailings have been extensively weathered since their deposition. The oxidation of sulphide minerals, particularly pyrite (FeS2 ) has reduced the pH of the tailings to nearly 2 in places. Below 300 mm the sulphide minerals are largely unweathered and the theoretical acid generating potential of the tailings exceeds 170 Mg CaCO3/1000 Mg tailings at certain depths. Plant growth trials were conducted to study the effects of lime and organic matter addition on the establishment of vegetation on the Tui mine tailings. Several plant species were assessed including some cultivars bred for their tolerance of heavy metals.

A unique sluicing process for recovering tailing impounded in a valley was developed by Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., West Coast Mines, Rosebery, Tasmania.Earthmoving equipment could not be used as most of the material to be recovered was semi-fluid. A conventional sluking method was also impracticable as there was no suitable working face from which the process could be commenced.Operations started from a flat surface, using special techniques for sinking through the tailing and establishing producing working faces as the sinking process continued.After about 2 years the bottom of the dam was reached and conventional sluicing methods could be used.

The Ok Tedi Project is now a high production open-pit porphyry copper mine located in the Star Mountains of Papua New Guinea (PNG). At present, total daily production is 190 000t of ore and waste. Large scale drilling and blasting has only been in operation since 1988, prior to which all material was removed by ripping and dozing. This paper reviews the steps taken over the last 12 months in establishing a more efficient drilling and blasting operation and highlights the significant reduction in powder factor. These improvements have been achieved largely through the introduction of air-bags, controlled pattern expansion and an overall focusing on the operation by involving consultants, ICI's technical service and internal departments.

Higher bed height up to 680 mm, including 30 mm hearth layer of sized return sinter and high suction below the grate bars up to 1400 mm WG have resulted in increasing the productivity to a level of 33 t/m2/day and reduced coke rate to a level of 46 kg/tonne sinter. The ferro-wastes like blue dust, flue dust, mill scale, collection from dust catcher and gas cleaning plant, etc have been successfully added in charge mix to produce quality sinters. In this paper, brief description of the work done at Regional Research Laboratory (CSIR) in last few years and two case studies are discussed including the successful development of pan sintering units.

The results of self potential geophysical surveys conducted over base metal prospects near Orange, Goulburn, and Wellington, N.S.W., indicate that this rapid and inexpensive exploration procedure merits wider application within eastern New South Wales, and in similar environments elsewhere.

The East China Mesozoic metallogenic province hosts the world’s largest resources of tungsten, tin, molybdenum, antimony and bismuth, with additional important gold, silver, mercury, lead, zinc, copper, uranium and iron deposits. These deposits form several giant metallogenic belts, including South China, Middle-Lower Yangtze River Valley, East Qinling-Dabie, eastern North China Craton and North-east China. Available data demonstrate that these metallogeneic belts are the products of episodic magmatic and related hydrothermal events between ~240 and ~80 Ma. Each magmatic-hydrothermal episode has produced distinct deposit assemblages that can be readily linked to the Mesozoic geodynamic evolution of East China, involving continental collision between the North China Craton and South China Block at 220–200 Ma, oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate under the Eurasian continent at ca 170–135 Ma and post-subduction extension and lithospheric delamination at 130–80 Ma. Metallogeny in north-eastern China is more complicated due to prolonged tectonic evolution related to southward subduction of the Mongolian–Okhotsk plate and westward oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate, and subsequent continental collision and post-collisional processes.CITATION:Mao, J W, Xie, G Q and Cheng, Y B, 2015. Three main divisions of the Proterozoic are recognized in the North-West Division of Western Australia. These are referred to, in order of decreasing age, as the Mt. Bruce Supergroup, the Bresnahan Group, and theBangemall Group. The stratigraphy and distribution of each is described, their relative ages discussed, and a brief geological history of the whole area is presented.
