A rotating disc geometry was used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of the cementation of cadmium, lead, and silver from dilute aqueous solutions. This work is an extension of studies carried out on the Cu-Zn and Cu-Fe systems for which the reaction rate was found to be completely solution phase mass transfer controlled.When the amount of material deposited was greater than 0·2 to 0·4 mg/cm2 there was an apparent enhancement in rate which is attributed to the formation of a roughened deposit. This same phenomenon was observed in the Cu-Zn and Cu-Fe systems. Again, the rate of reaction of each system investigated was found to be solution-phase mass transfer controlled.

In Australia and worldwide, open cut mining has become increasingly common over the last few decades through changes in excavation technology and ore economics. However, such operations frequently leave a legacy of open mine pits once mining ceases. Pit lakes will then form in mine pits that extend below the water table when dewatering operations cease. Pit lake waters are typically contaminated with metals, metalloids, saline or acidic/alkaline and rarely approach natural water body chemistry. Physically, pit lakes have unique bathymetries, are often strongly wind sheltered and have very small catchments. Nevertheless, pit lake waters often constitute a vast resource but of limited beneficial use (due to water quality issues); with a potential to contaminate regional surface and ground water resources. Water in pit lakes has the potential to be useful for a range of purposes in the Australian context of characteristic hot, dry climate and relatively few natural water bodies. Consequently, pit lakes can be seen to represent either a significant liability or a water resource to mining companies and regional communities. However, the lack of knowledge on pit lakes continues to hinder their proper management. This paper summarises the limited information currently available on water quality associated with Australian pit lakes. Information on pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quantity and quality is not nationally collated and requires immediate and ongoing attention from both mining companies and regulating authorities. Lack of a readily available database for pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quality fails to realise the potential for these water resources by both mining companies and Australian communities. Lack of access to pit lake quantity and water quality data may also lead to failure to manage this significant source of mining environmental risk.

The quantity, quality and detail of project information increases as project development moves from initial scoping level studies, to pre-feasibility and option studies, then definitive feasibility study and basic engineering stages. Data accumulates from metallurgical and vendor testing from various ore types and composites carried out to assess physical characteristics and processing responses of the ore. Over-simplification or assumptions about the orebody for flow sheet development can result in using æaverageÆ information for design. Use of averages of data can have adverse implications on sizing of plant and equipment and consequently on definitive study cost estimates and detailed engineering. In practice, the treatment plant workforce is faced with managing a non-homogeneous or non-average orebody in a variable operating environment that is not always predictable. This paper presents views on how to use the data generated from testwork in project development and for process and plant design. Examples of process design risk or operating risk are presented. Although this topic is applicable to the broad range of process design decision making in the minerals industry, this discussion references comminution, flotation and extraction processes for gold and base metal ores.

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. To the industrial geologist, as wen as to the general or historic geologist, the possession of a reliable key to the true order or sequence of the stratigraphy or position of the various upper rocky envelopes of the earth's crust, is, equally, a desideratum of the utmost importance. Of similar value to the two groups of students is the possession of facts which throw light upon the relationships which subsist between the puccessive rock formation of different countries, especially between countries lying close to each other, or within the same great geographical division.But there is necessarily a fundamental distinction which marks the respective limits of the field of observations of the industrial geologist, and the purely historic interest of the general geologist. The former has a more definite though less extensive scope. The scope of the latter is wide and indeterminate. In short, the observations of the industrial geologist are, 'from a commercial or economic point of view, of a more practical character, and are, therefore, intentionally restricted to the study of all geological questions which throw light upon the rocks which yield products of economic value and only include the study of the character and history of other rocks, in so far, as they afford aid to the more perfect comprehension of the best manner in which materials of economic value are likely to be sought, and the best means whereby these products may be secured for the material advantage of the community. The motive of the general geologist-in most cases-is a love of the study of some particular branch or province of the geological field, and the fascination of opening a new volume in nature's library, and the hope of extending the realm of knowledge, however slight, are often sufficient, as a motive, to enlist the energy and life's devotion of the true brethren of the hammer, irrespective of considerations regarding the commercial utility of the pursuit.

Environmental incidents involving mine tailings and waste rock inevitably become highly publicised and serve to damage the credibility of the entire industry. The recent serious incident involving a spill from a Romanian mine, was blamed for triggering æone of the worst environmental catastrophes in Eastern EuropeÆ. It is important to clearly demonstrate to the general public that these incidents are not representative of the industry as a whole. Where such incidents have occurred, the causes are generally related to poor design and/or construction, inadequate supervision and/or monitoring and maintenance, lack of independent expertise, inadequate risk identification and treatment and no provision to ensure that rehabilitation and long term management of the site occurs. Many people are unaware that these issues have been considered and provided for at the Martha Mine. Despite the fact that the first tailings storage facility has performed very well over fifteen years of operation, the long term safety and security of the tailings storage facilities continues to be questioned and debated by the public. The best way to address this is to provide quality information to enable a better understanding amongst the general public.

In the middle of 2000, BHP Billiton implemented a Six Sigma Plus business improvement program known as Operating Excellence. It was developed based on a business bottom line initiative to deliver 35 - 40c/share and was one of the BHP Billiton strategies to deliver $2 earnings per share and a longer term $40 share price (BHP share price). Cannington is a silver, lead and zinc mine owned and operated by BHP Billiton. Through implementing Six Sigma Plus Cannington wanted to:have in-house capabilities to change and improve; tailor for the needs of each business unit and department; have æSharing of its KnowledgeÆ as a tool for improvement and have a competitive edge across Cannington û to be better than our competitors; learn from and leverage off the successes of improved safety and prior business improvement efforts; and ensure networking and sharing of information have common measurement systems across all assets. As with most business improvement programs û Six Sigma Plus was met with some degree of skepticism, especially given the amount of resources involved. After 18 months, much of this skepticism has been replaced with enthusiasm as peopleÆs understanding and acceptance of its fundamental concepts are being realised. The idea behind Six Sigma Plus is that it combines sound technical solutions with high acceptance by those who need to work with or implement the change. The future vision for Six Sigma Plus is that it become part of what we do at Cannington û just like safety and environment û so that Six Sigma tools and methodologies are used in our every day work.

In referring to two subjects of interest to the Members of this Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, I would at the outset desire to express our gratification that to-day we are able to welcome as now united with ourselves, those members who until recently constituted the New Zealand Institute. It is hoped that the amalgamation so amicably arranged may be productive of the best results to all concerned, incorporated as this combination has been at the moment of the fulfilment of that greater political union, the Australian Commonwealth.Since last Annual Meeting held in Brisbane, we have come under the same roof as the Chamber of Mines of Victoria, and we entertain the hope that as that Chamber and this Institute possess so many interests in common in the encouragement and advancement of mining and metallurgical progress in these colonies, that much mutual benefit will ensue. There are many directions in which each body can assist the other, and I trust that a friendly co-operation will be maintained.It is gratifying to feel that in all the colonies a distinct movement is being made to increase the facilities for education in Mining and Metallurgy but if I may refer to our colony of Victoria in particular, we have to express the profound regret that in the means of education in the higher branches, we occupy an inferior position, and it is quite certain that we will continue to do so unless the Government is prepared to subordinate provincial considerations to the weightier.

Indonesia over the last 15 years has experienced a surge in coal exploration, which has led to the development of a major export industry. This coal exploration has improved the understanding of the geology of the Indonesian coal deposits. The main economic coal deposits are of Eocene and Miocene to Pliocene age, which mainly occur in Kalimantan and Sumatra and were formed from peat deposits in an equatorial paleoclimate similar to that prevailing today. Some of these peats were domed peats, which grew above the normal water tables, under a climate of year-round rainfall; these peats grew above the level at which waterborne mineral matter can enter the system, resulting in low ash and sulphur, and locally very thick coal. It is believed that such peats have formed the unusually thick, low ash, and low sulphur Miocene coals of Indonesia. Coal deposits of Eocene age are typically characterised by thinner seams, with relatively higher contents of ash and sulphur. The Miocene coals and Eocene coals both appear to have formed in lacustrine, coastal plain or deltaic depositional environments, similar to the modern peat-forming environments of eastern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan. The Eocene coals formed mainly in extensional tectonic settings. Miocene - Pliocene coal deposits formed in a range of tectonic settings; the most significant, for large economic coal deposits, are the foreland basin setting of the large Neogene coal deposits of South Sumatra.

Chemical and isotopic analyses of fumarole gases from Galeras Volcano, Colombia provide significant insights into the origin of volatile components in the magma. Water comprises a mixture of magmatic (rock-equilibrated at high temperature) and meteoric, with the relative proportions varying through time. Carbon isotopes are most consistent with a mantle source, although other contributions to the system cannot be ruled out. Nitrogen most likely originated from organic matter in subducted oceanic sediments. All of these 'primary' components have been modified somewhat by interaction or exchange with other reservoirs during ascent to the surface. In addition to information on the origin of the gases, these data show significant temporal variations precursory to eruptive events. Chemical ratios change and water becomes more meteoric in character prior to eruptions.

The 8 ft by 91/2 ft drive which joined No. 7 Shaft with Browne Shaft on the 1,480 ft level was extended from both ends and met at a point approximately 12,000 ft from No. 7 (2,000 ft from Browne).The surveying required for this 2 1/2 mile haulage drive called for greater accuracy than was obtainable from South Mine standard methods. Procedures and devices from published information were tried and modified as required to suit local conditions. Several new methods were applied and improved as the drive advanced. The control of angular, linear and level measurements was perhaps considerably in excess of the requirements, but this was offset by abnormally large discrepancies resulting from shaft plumbing. The accuracy of the final breakthrough, although not to the standard desired, was sufficient to complete the connection without inconvenience and added cost.INTRODUCTIONThe acquisition of the Browne Shaft leases in January 1962 presented the management of Broken Hill South Limited with the problem of transporting ore from these leases to its mill. It was eventually decided that diesel locomotivehaulage through a 2t mile drive on the 1,480 ft level between the two mines was the best solution. The drive was advanced from both ends after Browne Shaft was deepened by 80 ft to reach the 1,480 ft level horizon. Each end advancedabout 15 ft/day with the miners working three 7 hr shifts. Blasting was restricted to the end of the shift.The survey work involved five shaft plumbings and 78 theodolite stations in a traverse, underground and surface,of more than 5 miles. Because of the exceptional length of the drive, an unusually high degree of reliability was required.The aim was for a maximum error at breakthrough of 1 ft 1 in 30,000, and to secure this, precise methods of linear measurement were necessary. Shaft plumbing in particular posed special difficulties.

Fluidized bed roasting of copper concentrates from Mt. Morgan, Mt. Lyell, Mt. Isa, and Peko was performed in a 3 ft 6 in diameter, slurry fed, pilot plant roaster operated under autogenous conditions to produce calcines with desirable leaching properties. A 12 in. diameter, externally heated roaster, provided with a dry feed system, was also used.An account is given of important factors which influence roaster behaviour and performance, and the effects of operating variables on calcine composition and leaching properties are described. Due to copper ferrite formation, a maximum of approximately 50 per cent of the copper in the calcines may be in the form of CuO before the copper leach efficiency falls significantly below lOO' per cent. Recovery of gold by cyanidation of leach residues was consistently high and independent of roasting conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn traditional practice copper is produced by pyrometallurgical techniques when the ,copper minerals in the ore or concentrate are predominantly sulphides, and by hydrometallurgy when the minerals are oxidized. Copper smelting is most suited to large scale operations, and for many years small to medium size mines with sulphide orebodies have been interested ill; alternative processes.Since hydrometallurgical plants (ie. leaching and electrowinning plants) are essentially unitized, they may be scaled down in output without much loss in efficiency or increase in processing cost, and many proposals have been made for the application of this type of process following roasting of the sulphides to render the copper soluble. However, until the advent of fluidized roasting, it was not possible to control the roasting operations sufficiently precisely to produce calcines consistently of the required leaching characteristics.

A Good Product Range - So What! While in terms of water, waste management and environment protectrion, the Gippsland Basin may appear to have a good product range, what does this really mean? What it means is that, like any product range, the virtues of the product range must be sold and accepted by a majority of the public. The social, economic and environmental benefits of any enterprise using these products must be sold and accepted by the regional population. Many a budding entrepreneur has failed because he assumed that the public would accept his product, so good did it appear to be! However, we know that such an assumption must be avoided and that a great deal of time and effort needs to be invested in promoting and gaining acceptance of a product to ensure a long term and viable market.

Sapporo-Iwanai district is located at the intersection of the northeast Japan arc and Kuril arc, associated with the subduction zone. This area is characterized by Miocene submarine volcanism followed by Plio-Pleistocene subaerial volcanism.   Koryu, a small epithermal Au-Ag deposit, occurred in Pleistocene (1.4 - 0.85 Ma) within Miocene sedimentary rocks near a subaerial andesitic volcano, while Toyoha, a large epithermal Pb-Zn-Ag (-Au) deposit, also occurred near a subaerial andesitic volcano. Although most of the base metal deposits formed in middle-late Miocene, Toyoha formed in Plio-Pleistocene (2.93 - 1.60 Ma) within Miocene volcanic and sedimentary rocks. This epithermal mineralization was partly overprinted by xenothermal Cu-Sn-In(-Au) mineralization (2.68 - 0.49 Ma).   Hydrothermal alteration differs vastly between Koryu and Toyoha: host rocks at Koryu were not intensively altered, although wall rocks adjacent to veins were silicified, while those at Toyoha show intensive and extensive neutral-pH alterations. Geological and chronological studies show that middle~late Miocene (12.5 - 8.4 Ma) alteration was pervasive and overprinted by Plio-Pleistocene (2.93 - 0.49 Ma) alteration. The base metal veins in the middle-late Miocene were not well developed, but were large in number with great depth.   These studies show that the hydrothermal activity at Koryu is rather small and short-lived, while that at Toyoha is large, long-lived and characterized by overprinting of different hydrothermal systems. The subaerial magmatic activities yielded not only the andesite lavas, but also generated hydrothermal solutions for the formation of both Koryu and Toyoha. The metals were possibly derived from such magma. At Toyoha, the hydrothermal solutions could also remobilize metals from old ores.   The size, life span of magmatic-hydrothermal system, and overprinting on the old mineralizing systems could constrain the type of metal deposits (precious and polymetallic deposits) nearby subaerial andesitic volcanoes in Plio-Pleistocene.

Volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits in ancient, submarine volcanic belts of Australia include mound, lens and sheet-style Zn-rich polymetallic deposits, massive and disseminated pyritic Cu-Au deposits and disseminated, stratabound Au-only deposits. Variation in morphologies, metal ratios, volcanic environments and alteration features indicates there exists a spectrum of deposits from the classic VHMS model, to hybrids between VHMS-porphyry Cu and VHMS-epithermal end members. Zn-rich, polymetallic deposits form eitheron, or just below, the seafloor, whereas the Cu-Au and Au-only deposits form sub-seafloor by replacement of specific volcanic lithologies. Alteration zoned outwards from quartz -> chlorite -> sericite ¦ carbonate is typical of VHMS deposits across the spectrum. Quartz and carbonate alteration is dominant in the Au-only systems,chlorite alteration is commonly developed close to Cu-rich ores, and sericite and carbonate alteration zones are well developed in the stratiform Zn-rich ores. The most useful geochemical vectors for Zn-rich ores are the alteration index [AI=100(MgO + K2O)/(MgO + K2O + CaO + Na2O)], the chlorite-carbonate-pyrite index [CCPI=100(MgO + FeO)/(MgO + FeO + K2O + Na2O)], Mn content of carbonate, Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratio of chlorite,whole-rock Tl, Sb and Ba/Sr ratio, S34S of pyrite, and whole-rock S18O. The most useful vectors for pyritic Cu-Au ores are AI, CCPI, S/Na2O ratio, Na content of white mica, and Fe content of carbonate.

Process Options for Difficult Arid-Region Nickel Laterites In the absence of the discovery of significant nickel sulfide deposits, the future of Australia's nickel industry will increasingly depend on cost effect processes for low-grade nickel laterites. The problems encountered with the West Australian HPAL plants, resulting in three of the four plants being shut down, have caused the industry to revisit atmospheric leaching options, particularly heap leaching. West Australian laterites are characteristically very varied in grade, chemical composition and mineralogy with the result that, thus far, one process does not fit all laterites. In this paper the leaching of an especially refractory ore is compared using column leaching of whole ore and atmospheric leaching and HPAL processing of ground ore. The key characteristic is the resistance of the goethite phase to acid attack with low-to-moderate temperature leaching conditions. The refractory characteristic is attributed to the stabilising influence of chromium and aluminium and possibly manganese substitution in the goethite crystal structure and goethite morphology. A significant three-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt extractions under atmospheric leaching conditions was achieved by the relatively simple modification of bubbling sulfur dioxide into the reaction vessel to create a reducing environment. Recoveries increased from <30 per cent to 90 per cent nickel and 86 per cent cobalt after 10 hours of leaching at 95¦C. An even greater improvement was achieved under ambient conditions by heating the ore to temperatures above 250¦C for 30 minutes. Subsequent leaching at ambient temperature gave an eight-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt recoveries after 14 days bottle rolling. Both methods could be optimised and implemented in such a way as to increase laterite reserves in conjunction with a heap leach operation but may be better suited to vat or closed tank processing.

The development and introduction of a preventive maintenance scheme in the coke ovens department, coal preparation section, of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., Newcastle steelworks, is described together with its operation and the results achieved during the first 12 months.'fhe scheme consists essentially of an engineering analysis of the plant to establish maintenance schedules, and to record the details on reference cards.Items are reviewed progressively and a weekly work schedule is prepared, from which work orders are passed on to the maintenance foremen. These foremen in turn originate action orders and issue inspection sheets as required. Results are then reported back to the maintenance planner and used to revise norms, practices, and cycles.INTRODUCTIONWhat is maintenance? Some people consider maintenance to be the work involved in putting things together again after they have fallen apart. The author regards it as the mechanical care and repair of plant machinery and equipment to keep it operating in sound mechanical condition, without undue interference with production processes.Maintenance may be organized or haphazard, and, too often, what has been fondly imagined to be nicely controlled and organized maintenance proves, under pressure, to be more correctly described as haphazard. Haphazard maintenance deals with breakdowns as they occur, and frequently finds itself confronted with more breakdowns than can be handled. Mineralisation processes in epithermal deposits in the North Island of New Zealand are best illustrated by considering the two most productive deposits: Waihi and the Thames Bonanza Zone (TBZ), which have different mineralogies and ore shoots geometries. These two deposits can be taken as typical of certain styles of epithermal deposits worldwide, and recognition of their differences can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value. Waihi, the major economic producer in the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ), has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a vertical interval of 600 m which consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, base metal sulphides and electrum. They are found in the foot wall of earlier quartz veins which contain quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite and adularia. The Thames Bonanza Zone which was the second biggest producer in the CVZ has discrete near-vertical ore shoots over 300 m vertically, which consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, electrum and in their upper parts barite, that are enclosed in veins of quartz.   The gold mineralisation in both deposits is considered to be a co-precipitate with pyrite, with that at Waihi produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system. That at the TBZ was produced by mixing a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow proximal to the system's upflow.
