SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators (VPHGMS) possess the advantages of high efficiency and high reliability in beneficiating weakly magnetic minerals. In recent years, models SLon-2250, SLon-2500, SLon-3000 and SLon-4000 have been developed. Experiments were conducted to access the feasibility of removing zinc from lead slag by sulfation or chlorination or both. Gaseous sulfation with sulfur dioxide and oxygen released only 50 per cent of zinc even under the most severe conditions. Sulfation with concentrated sulfuric acid by a fast-leach process released 95 per cent of zinc while pug-roasting released a maximum of 78 per cent of zinc. Chloridization with NaCl in the presence of sulfating gas released 50 per cent of zinc, while direct chlorination with chlorine gas and oxygen released 85 per cent of zinc and 100 per cent of lead in a chloride condensate containing little impurities.

Variations in delay timing can have a marked influence on blasting effectiveness and, hence, on total production costs. In single-row bench blasts, delay firing is invariably more effective than simultaneous initiation. In single-row delayed blasts, there is an optimum inter-hole delay above and below which inferior blasting results are obtained. This optimum delay is equal to the time required for each charge to just effectively detach its quota of the burden. The inter-hole delay should seldom be less than 4 ms.m-l of burden.In multi-row blasts in which holes in a given effective row are fired on the same delay, the entire burden on any effective row should be detached from the rock mass just before charges in the next effeotive row detonate. Delays shorter than this give inferior blasting results and an increased likelihood of environmental and slope stability problems. If the inter-row delay is too long, cut-offs can occur, especially where the delay unit is located outside the blasthole. For a surface delay system, the optimum inter-row delay usually varies between 4 ms.m-l and 8 ms.m-l of effective burden. The number of rows that can be fired effectively with surface delay systems (in a single blast) is limited by the threat of cut-offs. Greater interrow delays and a larger number of rows per blast can be fired to advantage with down-the-hole delay systems.There are practical limits to the timing accuracy of all available delay systems. The existence of delay time variability should be recognized and duly considered in the design of blasts.The relationship between delay timing and blasting vibrations is not discussed.

In this paper, the scientific bases of creation of simulation modelling systems of excavator-truck-conveyor complex work are represented. During the simulation modelling process of big mining and transport systems work the strict and full account of an order and sequence of all operations of simulated process is carried out. Step-by-step fixing of mining and transport system elements condition - excavators in loading and unloading points, trucks, road section, unloading points in storage bin, crushers and conveyors is conducted. Work and idle time of system elements are considered. During modelling process the information characterising system work as a whole is collected. It allows us to establish qualitative and quantitative influence of each system element on the final results of its functioning and provides to estimate rationality of a particular organisation variant of mining and transport equipment interaction from technological positions. Simulation results are: economic and technological indicators of mining and transport complex functioning of the period for each subsystem, as well as on the road, the points of loading, unloading and reloading.

A method is described for the rapid and effective production of polished section mounts of ore and mineral particulates to the standards required for automated image analysis. This requires mounting without segregation of particles by mass or density, and it is also preferable to avoid having particles in contact so that they can be recognised as individuals. To achieve this, the particle samples are first split to an appropriate degree in a rotary riffle, and the sub-sample mechanically diluted and thoroughly mixed with an inert filler of the same size range as the particles. Just sufficient epoxy resin is added to make the mixture fluid. During setting, the ore particles are mechanically supported by the inert filler particles, thus maintaining the particles in a random three-dimensional distribution. A rapid two-stage grinding process, based on the successive use of 600 mesh silicon carbide and 1200 mesh (10 um) corundum on cast iron plates, is followed by three stages of mechanical diamond polishing on cloth laps. Hand polishing is entirely avoided, as is the use of papers.

Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources is reviewed. In heavlly-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations. By contrast in arid areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

Differentiation of a basaltic (?) magma occurred in an active volcanic area during the late Miocene and Pliocene, and a change in the general mode of extrusion from fissure flow for the basalt to explosion for the andesite reflects an accompanying increasing magmatic viscosity. A caldera formed after the flow phase was completed and was filled with coarse agglomerate, much of which has a fused appearance. After an erosion interval its shape was modified and it became gradually deeper as repeated explosions from growing andesitic volcanoes caused large quantities of pyroclastic material to be deposited. At the close of this phase the floor abruptly collapsed when a, large block of the underlying crust was engulfed. The incompetent pyroclastics filling the caldera steepened in dip and the ensuing fractures were filled by the rising magma as dykes and sills and a chonolith formed below the caldera at a shallow depth. The ensuing activity reveals a further stage in differentiation and biotite is an important new ferromagnesian to be observed in the new rocks.Fracturing of the surrounding basalts was most intense in the rocks forming the periphery of the caldera where steeply and flatly dipping faults resulted from increasing horizontal pressure directed towards the caldera.Further differentiation resulted in the increased crystallization of orthoclase felspar, as evidenced by the numerous intrusives of trachy andesitic composition. Magmatic freezing caused mineralizers to accumulate at the top of the chonolith. These eventually escaped and auriferous pyrites, tellurides, quartz, and calcite were deposited in the surrounding rocks.The flatly dipping fractures are the most important and can be expected at various depths in a zone about 4,000 ft wide surrounding the caldera. Latest movement along these was controlled by magmatic consolidation rather than the shape of the caldera. Some flat faults were able to remain open during mineralization and acted as a feeder for the shallower fractures, thus limiting the depths to which the steeper dipping fractures were mineralized with the possible exception of one particular Nw.-striking lode (the Crown-Crescent).INTRODUCTIONThe gold deposits of the Tavua district were discovered in 1932 and from 1935 to June, 1961, 1,985,041 fine ounces of gold were produced from 4,202,504 tons of ore. Pound Road Quarry is an alluvial gravel quarry owned and operated by Fulton Hogan Ltd. for the supply of aggregate in Canterbury, and is the largest quarry in the South Island in terms of production. It has evolved from three separate quarries, as a result of which extraction has occurred sporadically in a number of areas. Due to this factor, and the need to manage environmental impacts, a detailed quarry management plan was completed in 1995 which formed the basis for implementation of a certified environmental management system.   In December 1997, the quarry was the first in New Zealand to achieve ISO 14001 (TELARC) accreditation for implementation of an environmental management system. The main potential environmental impacts arising from the quarry operation include dust, noise and groundwater contamination, and visual landscape effects associated with gravel extraction, the mitigation of which is achieved by means of æbest practiceÆ methods. All quarry operations are controlled in terms of the environmental management system by means of regular (monthly and yearly) environmental reviews, appropriate auditing of environmental documents, and monitoring of environmental targets in accordance with consent and statutory requirements.

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a block cave mining operation exploiting a diluted reserve of 131 million tonnes grading 1.06 per cent copper and 0.81 g/t gold in the lower portion of the Ertsberg East Skarn System (EESS). The EESS is a calcium-magnesium silicate skarn containing in excess of 250 million tonnes of copper-gold ore, located in the Ertsberg Mining District on the crest of the Jawawijaya mountain range in the highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The EESS was discovered in 1968 where it cropped out at an elevation of 4050 metres above sea level. The Ertsberg Mining District is underlain by siliclastic carbonate and siltstone formations of Jurassic to Tertiary age. The sediments have been folded and are cut by major bedding subparallel and crosscutting structures. Intrusion of a series of igneous bodies post-dates folding and faulting. These I-type intrusions are the source for the copper-gold mineralisation found in the Ertsberg Mining District. The EESS is hosted by carbonates of the Tertiary Waripi and Faumai Formations that have been altered to calcium-magnesium silicate skarn and is situated on the southern limb of a northwest-trending syncline. The EESS is an essentially vertical tabular body with a vertical extent of at least 1200 metres and a lateral extent of up to 1000 metres. The width of the EESS averages 200 metres and locally is in excess of 300 metres. The northeast (hangingwall) contact of the EESS is a skarn reaction front in sudden contact with barren marbles. This contact coincides with a zone of localised faulting and brecciation. The EESS is bounded to the southwest (footwall) by the Ertsberg Diorite, a 3.25 Ma old intrusive. The DOZ block cave operation extends from 3040 metres above sea level to a maximum of 3388 metres above sea level, has a length of 860 metres and a maximum width of 350 metres. The DOZ is a high temperature skarn with a prograde forsterite/diopside mineralogy whose protolith is the dolomitic Tertiary Waripi Formation. The principal retrograde alteration minerals include tremolite, actinolite, serpentine, talc and chlorite. Grade is highest where bornite occurs in large dense complex intergrowths with magnetite and anhydrite. Grade has been locally enhanced in the DOZ by a late-stage pyrite-chalcopyrite hydrothermal alteration event with associated brecciation. Ertsberg Diorite along the footwall of the skarn is also included in the reserve where it is mineralised endoskarn or has been mineralised by porphyrytic or late stage hydrothermal alteration. Formation of the EESS was initiated by contact metamorphism during the intrusion of the Ertsberg Diorite with later metasomatic alteration during both prograde and retrograde phases. The bulk of sulphide mineralisation formed late in the retrograde phase. The EESS is open along strike to the northwest and down-dip with on-going exploration of these areas. Current exploration is targeting both endoskarn and porphyry style alteration and mineralisation of the Ertsberg Diorite.

The only economically significant deposit of dolomite in New Zealand is at Mount Burnett, in north-west Nelson. The dolomite, associated with marbles and schists, is complexly deformed, and is of Paleozoic age.A very large quantity is present, although the recoverable amount is to some extent limited by the difficult terrain.Physically the quality of the dolomite is excellent. It is a tough, durable, fine grained rock. Chemically it is a little more variable. The range and frequency o~ the more important impurities are illustrated by hlstograms, as is the "dolomite factor"-a measure of the amount of the mineral dolomite in the rock. lbe dolomite factor averages 84 per cent, the remainder of the rock consisting largely of calcite. Quarrying, milling, production, and uses are described. In 1966 production reached 13,250 tons.

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

Conventional hand drawn isopach maps of the cover of the Bulli Seam are too eomplex for use in the delineation of large domains of similar cover. Isopach maps prepared from trend surfaces fitted to the cover data are much simpler in form and so provide a convenient method of delineating broad domains of similar cover.

Ore from the Hill 50 Gold Mine, consists essentially of pyrrhotite, with minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and gold, replacing "jaspilite." The gold is associated with the sulphides as shotty particles. About 8 per cent. of the particles are less than '0.010'mm.The Hill 50 Gold Mine, at Boogardie in the Murchison goldfield, about 300 miles north-west of Kalgoorlie, was first operated in 1898. From 1898 to 1917 it yielded 20,000 short tons of ore for a recovery of 6,225' fine oz. gold, equivalent to a recovery grade of 6.22 dwt. gold per ton.The present company since the beginning of its operations in September 1936 to June 30, 1954, produced 811,081 short tons of ore for a recovery of 242,554 fine oz. of gold, equivalent to a recovery grade of 5.98 dwt. gold per ton.The grade of ore (recovery grade) has shown a remarkable variation with depth. From the 120 ft. Ievel to the 300 ft. level, it averaged about 7.5 dwt. Au per ton. Below the 300 ft. level it declined, and from 300 ft. to 400 ft. averaged 4.9 dwt. per ton, falling further with increasing depth to about 4.5 dwt. per ton at the '600 ft. level.On the 820 ft. level the grade improved sharply to about 14 dwt: per ton, and this grade has persisted down to and on the 1060 ft. level.The orebody has been described by Finucane (1953) as a series of lenses of finely banded jaspilite conformably enclosed by greenstones. The jaspilite is tightly folded and faulted and intruded by dykes of felspar porpnyry.Mineralization is practically restricted to the jaspilite.

With the technique and data obtained in using the blast hole diamond drill for "Removal of Horizontal Level Pillar by means of Blast Hole diamond drilling at New Occidental Gold Mines N.L.," as described in Proceedings No. 133 of 1944, and a series of experiments using the blast hole diamond drill for stoping at New Occidental and New Cobar Mines over the past two years, a benching method of stoping has been developed using 2 inch coring diamond drill bits, resulting in efficient and economical ore extraction in these large ore bodies.During the experimental stages the standard H-inch blast hole was used, but the deflection of the holes, when using this solid bit, either decreased or increased the burden of the hole when it became necessary to drill holes deeper than 45 feet.It was found that after blasting vertical holes deeper than 45 feet, the ore did not break satisfactorily over the full length of the hole; on one occasion as much as 30 feet of bench was left at the bottom of the face, which had to be subsequently re-bored andblasted.As this defect was also noticeable to some extent even when the holes did not deflect, it was then obvious that the explosive had become less sensitive in the lower section of the hole. This was probably brought about by pressure being built up ahead of the detonation wave in H-inch hole, resulting in desensitization of the explosive.Another series of experiments were carried out, using 2-inch solid bits, which enabled a much greater burden on the holes, and the use of primacord for the full length of the hole.This gave satisfactory results regarding breaking and fragmentation, but was uneconomic owing to the excessive consumption of diamonds, and the slow rate of drilling.Further experiments were then carried out using 2-inch coring bits, (Fig. 1) which allowed holes of 90-feet to be bored with little deflection, and proved to be entirely satisfactory as to cost and speed of drilling.

Ensuring the success of a major resource development project, whether in the Gippsland Basin or elsewhere, is typically both a complex and costly process. It is therefore imperative from the point of view of the proponents of such a project - and in particular the financiers - that everything possible be done to minimise administrative confusion and delay in the establishment phase of the project, and to put systems in place which enable the project to run smoothly and efficiently in the later stages of its development and operation. An essential element in this process is ensuring that the project management is able to come to terms with and deal effectively with the relevant planning and environmental laws.

In setting out to describe the methods and machinery employed at Iron Knob the writer does not attempt to give any information as to the situation, topography or geological features of the locality. This, together with estimates of the quantities of ore still available, has been carried out in a most thorough manner by R. L. Jackr and F. R. Hockey. This essay is intended to deal with working methods as they exist to-day, beginning with drilling, blasting, quarry traction, etc., and touching on such details as the supplyof electricity, water and compressed air.At the present time almost the entire output of ore is won from the hill known as Iron Monarch. The form of the hill, a smooth, rounded dome, rising some 640 ft. above the plain and having a base diameter of n miles, lends itself ideally to the "bench" system of open-cut quarrying.Fig. 1 shows the relationship of the benches "A," "B" and "E" in their order of development. The method of investigation was to study the distribution of ore in great detail, to make a thorough structural study of the lode and the mine area, and then to compare the results of the two studies. Such a comparison usually reveals a very close relationship between geological structure and ore distribution, and can often lead to important conclusions which would not be reached in the ordinary working of a mine.The Triton mine lies 30 miles E.N.E. of Cue, or 380 miles N.W. of Kalgoorlie, in typical pre-Cambrian rocks, consisting of gTeenstone lavas and tuft's, interbedded with slates and some sediments, and intruded by granite and porphyry. Fig. 1 (at end of paper) is a longitudinal section of the mine and shows that the workings consist of the main North Emu and the smaller South Emu, separated by a distance of about 1 of a mile. Both orebodies occur on the same lode, which strikes north and south and dips practically vertically. On the same line, and of 1/2 a mile and a mile respectively to the north of the North Emu, are the small Rand and North Rand workings, where a big width of lode material has proved to be very low grade. In the North Emu the lode width averages 12 to 15 feet; it is seldom less than 5 feet and in places reaches 30 feet. In the South Emu the lode is wide, but only portion of it is payable.The lode is a mineralised bed occurring between massive lava flows on the east and a mixed series of tuft's and thin lava flows on the west. The lode material is hard, fine grained, and dark coloured, and generally has a faint banding which is believed to indicate a tuft'aceous origin of the original lode rock. Microscopic examination shows that the original lode rock has undergone considerable albitisation;' there has also been considerable formation of biotite which gives the lode material a characteristic sheen. The mineralisation consists of abundant fine pyrite, which is auriferous, and a lesser development of pyrrhotite which is, however, barren of gold.THE OREBODIES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICSThe distribution of ore is best studied from gold contours, as these reveal features that cannot be detected in an ordinary assay section. Gold contours (see Fig. 3) are developed' by plotting the width and grade of all development and stoping assays throughout the mine on a longitudinal projection, representing each sample by a coloured dot according to a suitably chosen range of assay values, and then outlining areas of similarly coloured dots (see H. J. C. Conolly, Econ. Geol., April, 1936). Both width and grade must be taken into account and the simplest method of gold contouring is to use dwt.lft. values, but difficulties arise here with big widths of low grade and small widths of high grade ore. To choose an extreme case, 30 ft. of 2 dwts. and 2 ft. of 30 dwts. both equal 60 dwts.lft., and would therefore be given the same value in dwt.lft. contouring...
