"El presente texto señala las instrucciones para el trazado de los sondajes diamantinos, así como se describen las siguientes fuentes vanadíferas: Checoeslovaquia, Inglaterra, Francia, Alemania, España, Méjico, Estados Unidos,Argentina Sud Africa y Rhodesia del Norte y Minasragra. En ese sentido, se recomienda que se realicen investigaciones en la parte oxigenada de todos los filones de plomo, zinc y cobre de la Cordillera de los Andes con el fin de identificar una nueva fuente vanadífera. Asimismo, de los tres grupos de filones asfalto-vanadíferos que comprende la región Central del Perú, el que más interés ha tenido por su valor en vanadio es el primer grupo, pese que las asfaltitas que lo constituyen pertenecen a la clase de las llamadas secas. A este grupo de filones, pertenecen Minasragra y Sillapata."

La siguiente investigación refiere dos aspectos de la metalurgia del vanadio, en tanto se relaciona con el desarrollo de la industria minera nacional. El primero indica el modo de aumento de la producción de dicho metal, a través de un método adecuado que aligere el proceso de calcinación y del tratamiento metalúrgico de las cenizas vanaderas. Mientras que el segundo aspecto,muestra las causasdel déficit (causas mecánicas, temperatura, composición de la mena), en la planta de Lixiviación N. 2 de la Vanadium Corporation of America en Jumasha, Cerro de Pasco. Para ello, se propone aplicar el tostado clorurante, seguido de una lixiviación con ácido sulfúrico en hornos de reverbero, que mantenga una recuperación aceptable y permita una mejor producción del metal.

El siguiente trabajo señala los modos de aprovechamiento del mineral de carbón denominado "andracita", en tanto materia combustible de producción de las briquetas. Es decir, se busca crear un producto biocombustible que mantenga su calidad ecológica y que a su vez genere mayores posiblidades de venta en el mercado internacional, Para ello es necesario, evaluar el nivel de los aglutinantes en su composición y tratar de conservar sus características primigenias de dicho producto.

La producción de hierro por medio del alto horno se realiza en condiciones limitadas en lo que refiere al combustible reductor coque, ya que necesita mayores proporciones de materias volátiles en los carbones originarios. Por ello, la presente investigación remarca la importancia del uso del horno eléctrico de reducción o de cuba baja, como unidad metalúrgica más idónea para producir arrabio de variadas cualidades. Asimismo la aplicación de este horno, permite extender su producción en la industria siderúrgica de algunos paises europeos y asiáticos, y por qué no dentro de América Latina.

"INTRODUCTION The tremendous expansion of industry during the war and the unprecedented demands for metals and minerals are reflected in the production and use of explosives during that period. The increased use of explosives brought added safety problems to industry because of the necessity of using men as blasters who were not entirely familiar with and some who were totally unfamiliar with the characteristics of some or all of the various explosives. A discussion of the characteristics of the ordinary types of explosives used in: industry should assist in giving a better understanding of the hazards attending their use. Explosives are compounded so they may be used with reasonable safety provided the user understands and follows the procedure recognized as standard safety practice. Short cuts and the failure to understand and use recognized safe practices, as well as the selection of explosives unstited for the work at hand, are all part of the safety problem,The extent to which explosives are used in the United States is shown by a study of the statistics compiled by the Bureau of Mines 4/ regarding them. Some of these statistics are shown below and serve as an indicator of the tremendous number of men engaged in the transportation, storage, and use of explosives. Theme men are exposed to the inherent hazards attending this occupation and they should be familiar with the recognized safe practices relative to explosives."

THE Cerro de Pasco Railway Co., owned and operated by the Corporation, is a common carrier whose chief functions are transportation of ore and concentrates from the mines at Cerro de Pasco to the smelter in Oroya, and haulage of coal from the coal mines at Goyllarisquisga to the coal washery at Fundicion. Connecting with the Peruvian Central Railway at Oroya, the C. de P. Railway maintains joint, daily freight and passenger service from Lima and the port of Callao to Cerro de Pasco, terminal of the C. de P. main line and gateway to the Huanuco Valley. Extending from Oroya to Cerro de Pasco the main line is a standard-gauge roadbed of 70-lb. rail, 132 km. long with a maximum compensated grade of 2.25 per cent and a curvature of 16°, climbing from an elevation of 12,272 ft. above sea level at Oroya, lowest station on the line, to 14,208 ft. at Cerro de Pasco. The highest point reached by the C. de P. is on the coal branch at Alcacocha where the rails are 14,385 ft. above the sea.

The Siamese mining lew, which is cited as "The Sian Mining Act, 2461 (1919)," was enacted February 14, B. E. 2461 (A. D. 1919), corresponding to the ninth year of His Majesty's reign. This act replaces the Sian Mining Act of 1901 and repeals all edicts, decrees, laws, rules, and local customs relating to mining the terms of which are inconsistent with the new law. It shall in- clude all subsequent alterations or additions, as well as all rules issued by the Minister (of Land and Agriculture) already in force or to be brought into force publication in the Government Gazette to be deemed sufficient notice of any modifications or alterations. (Art. 1, 2, 5, 83, and 85.) Legislation passed recently amending certain provisions of the mining law for the purpose of controlling the sale of minerals is the mining amendment act, B. E. 2474, given August 21, 1931 (7th year of the present reign), which repeals provisions of the mining act, B. 3. 2461, and also all rules and regula- tions relating to mining that are inconsistent with the amending ect. Under article 25 of the mining amendment act, B. E. 2474, ministeriel regulations (of the Minister of Agriculture) were issued August 21, 1931. Further recent legislation, brought about by the agreement of the Siamese Government to become a party to the international tin restriction scheme (inter- national tin pool), is the tin and tin ore restriction act (Siam), B. CANADIAN gold production is forging ahead annually and the prospects are that it will continue to do so for many years. Table 1 shows recent annual increases. Production for 1933 will probably reach $70,000,000, and further increases are likely in 1934 and 1935. (Data for November and December, 1932, are estimated throughout this article.) The depression sent many prospectors to the woods so during the last two years many new gold areas have been discovered and are attracting real capital for exploration and development. Several mills came into production in 1932 and mills now under construction will start production in 1933. The offices of mining lawyers are busy. Capital for this new work is obtained from well financed mining companies, syndicates, and individuals who were fortunate enough to invest in the dividend-paying gold mines of the north country in the early days. Prospectors and capital are cooperating. An interest is always retained by the prospector or vender and usually a small amount of real money is given the prospector.

This paper is one of a series dealing with mining problems and summarizing the data contained in the Information Circulars on individual mines that have been prepared by the managers or superintendents and published by the Bureau of Mines. The purpose of this paper is to present the problems encountered in the development of an efficient mine organization and to show the means used by certain mining companies in promoting efficiency. There is also a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the various systems of paying and handling labor and a description of their application at the individual mines.

ALUMINUM which has lost its original identity as to source may be considered as secondary. This would include scrap originating in the fabrication of aluminum, which is not consumed at the plant of fabrication, and all material resulting from fabrication, which has lost its original identity regardless of whether it be consumed at the plant of fabrication or not. In general, secondary aluminum may be divided into two classes, commercially pure and alloyed. The chief impurities found in commercially pure aluminum are copper, iron, titanium and silicon; while in aluminum alloys, copper, iron, titanium, silicon, zinc, manganese, magnesium, nickel, or tin, may be present in varying proportions. Occasionally lead and antimony are found in secondary aluminum alloys, especially if the alloy results from remelting vender's automotive scrap. Such alloyed elements as are found in the scrap cannot be removed on remelting. In this, the remelting of secondary aluminum differs from the smelting of secondary copper or most other secondary metals. The majority of secondary materials reach the consumer in the form of remelt ingot or remelt No. 12 ingot. This ingot varies greatly in quality, depending upon the source of the material, and the manner in which it is refined and blended. The principal differences between primary and secondary ingot are: 1. The composition of secondary ingot may be more or less indefinite. 2. Secondary ingot may contain more dross and oxide. Secondary ingot may, however, be used successfully in a great many products. RELATION OF PRIMARY PRODUCTION TO SECONDARY PRODUCTION Table 1, compiled from data published by The American Metal Market, gives an approximate idea of the relation of primary to secondary production. Information obtained from other sources leads the authors to believe that the figures for secondary production are somewhat low.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Federal, State, and local health services, and the mining companies, and miners? organizations, has for several years been carrying on sanitary surveys of mining districts in various states, with the purpose of collecting information on good and poor practices in mine sanitation, construction of approved wash-houses and change houses, the measures being taken to combat preventable diseases, the essential features of good houses for mining towns, and other conditions affecting the health and efficiency of miners and their families. The knowledge thus gained is disseminated for the common benefit of the mining industry. The sanitary conditions in the coal-mining districts of Alabama, as found by a recent survey made by the writer, are presented in this report. In addition to the towns on which this report is chiefly based, at least twice as many were visited where no details :were taken, but their general conditions are taken into consideration in summing conditions in the coal districts.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE list of our past-Presidents comprises the names of runny who, in their official addresses, have sketched the current progress of the arts and professions with which they were familiar. Such addresses are, in my judgment., highly useful, setting forth the results of our own work as a. society, and recalling to our minds the particular lines in which discussion would prove most fruitful. . Following this course with some hesitation, I venture to offer an outline of the recent improvements and the present situation in minim and metallurgy in the Western United States. The wonderful advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity have all combined to aid these arts to such an extent that. progress during the last decade has undeniably been more rapid than ever before in the history of the profession.. In all mining countries improved transportation-facilities, in many instances called into existence by the traffic created by the mines themselves, have done much- to enlarge the. field of operations by the reduction of freight-, operating- and living-expenses, thereby bringing lower-grade properties into the producing class. Under normal' conditions, as the age of a district in¬creases, all these differentt factors should combine to off-set. the augmented costs attendant on deep mining, and greatly tend to prolong the profitable life of the mines. In these times of sharp rivalry, both as to price and quality, among the makers and venders of engineering explosives, it is often desirable to be able to determine the relative energy or value of the various explosives offered for sale, in order to purchase intelligently ; or, having contracted for a large amount of an explosive of a certain standard quality, to be able to ascertain if the manufacturer keeps his product up to the specified standard. The simple and inexpensive apparatus described below was devised by the writer while engaged on the improvement of the Tennessee River, at MuscleShoals, under the direction of' Major W. R. King, U. S. Engineers, in the summer of 1879. It answered the purpose so well that it is thought that a brief account of it may be of interest to other engineers. It consisted, essentially, of an old blacksmith's anvil and a common striking hammer, such as is used for driving rock-drills. The anvil was placed face downward on solid, level ground. In what was then the top of it, a vertical hole, one and one-fourth inch in diameter and about one arid three-fourths inch deep, was made with a ratchetdrill. The surface of the anvil immediately around the drill-hole was made as true and smooth as possible with a file. Next, a new striking-hammer, weighing nine pounds, with a turned and true face, was selected ; and a handle, eleven feet long and about one and a half inches in diameter, was fitted into it so that it
