The contiguous Kotre Basantpur and Pachmo (KBP) coal blocks in the Hazaribagh District of Jharkhand State in east India are being developed by Tata Steel Limited (Tata Steel) to supply coking coal to a new steel mill at Kalinganagar in Orissa.The planning challenges are many. The multiple coal seams range in thickness up to 6 m and extend to nearly 500 m depth, with dips up to 25¦ and highly variable quality. Several normal faults with throws up to 150 m intersect the deposit. There is little room for waste dumping on the lease, several large nalas (seasonal creeks) cross the blocks, and the KBP leases are not contiguous with Tata Steel's existing mining operations at West Bokaro. Geotechnical conditions, while not well defined at this stage, are largely unfavourable. There are several villages on the blocks, and extensive paddy fields. In 2009, Adelaide Mining Consultants Pty Ltd (AMC) completed a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a production level of 8 Mt/a. A terrace mining system was proposed using 28 m3 hydraulic excavators and 185 t trucks working horizontal up-dip slices. Subsequently the viability of in-pit crushing and conveying was assessed, but the full results were not available for this paper.It is planned to extract a total of 147 Mt of raw coal at a strip ratio of 5.2 bank cubic metres per tonne (bcm/t). The planned maximum pit depth is over 300 m.The project includes a washery, a 2 + 25 MW fluidised bed power station to utilise all the coarse washery rejects, and a railway spur line to carry the washed coal to the railhead some 7 km distant.

"The largest cost centres of the David Bell Mine concentrator are grinding, leaching and effluent treatment. Optimizing results during the 6th year of operation are listed below: o SAG mill slurry density control and operating strategies improved liner life and media consumption by 10 and 25%, respectively.o Poly-met liners clad the SAG mill except for the feed end. Lower noise levels and reduced mill downtime have resulted in an improved and more efficient workplace (time required for liner changes is 2 to 3%).o A comparative grinding media study using seven different marked media at the same time showed media wear rates range 120 to 198 mg/kWh and ball mill charge replacement frequencies of 8.3 to 13.1 per year, and that a meaningful wear test must include all media to be tested at the same time in the same mill. High quality carbon steel cylinders had the best economics.o Pre-aeration, using pure gaseous oxygen is accomplished in pipe reactors. Small bubble generators provide oxygen in the first three leach tanks. 1500 to 3000 kg of oxygen is consumed per day. Leach kinetics have improved and trends indicate increases in gold recovery of three to seven ounces per day at reduced costs. Effects of reduced cyanidation of accessory metals on the effluent treatment plant will be discussed in a separate paper."

The works of Metal Manufactures Ltd are situated at Port Kemblam NSW, within a few hundred yards of a deep-water harbour. At present they occupy about 26 acres, and ample provision has been made for future extensions. Rail connection exists between various parts of the Works and the main South Coast Railway, the harbour jetties and the adjacent copper refinery of The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Co Ltd. A plan of the works is shown in Fig 1.The company was incorporated in March 1916, and commenced production of copper wire in June 1918. Early in 1920, tube manufacture was undertaken, followed by telephone cable mnufacture in 1923. Today the Works consist of five principal sections: Founrdy, Tube Factory, Wire Factory, Cable Factory and Case and Drum Factory. Whilst the last four are engaged in producing the finished materials for despatch from the Works, the first-mentioned is engaged in producing copper, brass, and other non-ferrous billets for use in the Tube and Wire factories. In addition, there are Engineering and Metallurgical Departments supporting the manufacturing sections, and in these, as well as in all other sections of the Works, extensions have been carried out from time to time to provide for increased output and new types of products.

Competition from foreign coal producers could displace as much as 9 Mt/a (10 million stpy) of US coal bound for power plants located near waterways. But, according to a Maryland-based coal consultant, it could be worse. Theoretically, about 52 Mt (57 million st) of domestic coal could be vulnerable to imports by 1990, said Forrest Hill, of Hill & Associates of Annapolis. Hill was speaking to about 150 coal industry executives and experts at the third annual Coal Marketing Strategies Conference in November. Most were at the Denver, CO conference to pick up tips on how to sell coal in an oversupplied market. Imports threaten domestic markets Of the 200 utilities studied by Hill and his staff, 119 are situated near major waterways, he said. However, most of those waterways are not equipped to handle coal from the shipping lanes. Good news for US coal producers. But don't breathe too easily. Foreign coal still poses a major threat to domestic markets, Hill continued. The strength of the US dollar is an obvious factor. But easy access to US utilities located on waterways combined with low rates for ocean vessels give foreign producers another edge. And foreign mines are typically low cost producers. For example, Hill said Colombia's huge Cerrejon mine can deliver coal to an Illinois power plant for $47.87/t ($43.39 per st). That compares to $52.85/t ($47.95 per st) from a Kentucky coal mine. Also, Colombian coal producers can generate a cash flow even if the coal sells for $27.50/t ($25 per st). The main competition US producers face from abroad, as Hill sees it, comes from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Poland, South Africa, and, perhaps, from Venezuela. Domestic producers, however, do have some things going for them. Most US coal buyers, Hill said, "are not wild about the idea of buying foreign coal." A 10% price advantage or pressure from public utility commissions would be needed to force some of them to buy foreign coal, he said. Some of the utilities contacted said they would not commit to more than one-third of their stockpiles to a foreign source. Another advantage for US producers is that they have room in their long-term contracts to cut prices and still maintain a profit, Hill said. Railroads, too, have high profit margins written into their rate structures. They are also aware of the import threat. Therefore, they may reduce their rates accordingly to keep their markets. Marketing's role The energy price shocks of 1972 and 1976 caused major adjustments in world economics. Coal was no exception. High oil prices caused many utilities to look at less expensive coal. As the market improved, coal prices began to respond, said R. Gale Daniel, of Anaconda Minerals Co. But clean air legislation and the strengthening dollar caused havoc in the coal markets, he said. The price of oil crashed, taking with it predictions of record coal use. The result is an oversupply of coal that has led to price cutting. The 1,380 m (4,200 ft) long New Crystal Springs Bypass (Polhemus)Tunnel (NCSBT) will replace the existing Crystal Springs Bypass Pipeline. This tunnel project is part of the SFPUC’s $4.3 billion capital improvement program to repair and seismically upgrade their aging pipelines, tunnels, reservoirs and dams that provide drinking water to more than 2.4 million customers in the San Francisco Bay Area. This paper describes the development of the tunnel alignment and design, and the complex ground conditions of the Franciscan Mélange. Of particular interest is the challenge of tunneling with a possible downhill grade of 3%, a rigorous environmental process and incorporating the lessons learned from 1960s construction of the adjoining Crystal Springs Bypass Tunnel.

Faults under high rock cover represent some of the most severe ground conditions a Tunneler can encounter. High ground water pressures and flows are usually associated with mountain faults. Ground behavior can range from blocky ground to flowing sands and squeezing clays. Sticking a IBM within a fault zone for many weeks, with the disastrous financial consequences, is still a common occurrence. Interpreting the geology and detecting the location of a fault prior to penetrating it is a fundamental step to successful tunneling. Ground water control through predraining or pre-grouting is the second fundamental step. This paper discusses techniques applied for detecting and crossing mountainous fault zones through the use of case histories across the globe.

The application of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) has been growing in the mining industry for the last 10 to 15 years. The major benefits supporting this trend are better energy efficiency, improved grinding capacity, and higher metal recovery in downstream processes such as heap leaching and flotation. In general there is limited quantitative knowledge on the true benefits of HPGRs relative to SAG mills in comminution, and about which situations one deals with better than the other. This paper will present a structure for comparison of the energy requirements for HPGR versus SAG mill considering complete circuits for comminution of precious and base metals hard ores. The work presented is from the design of four complete circuits based on ore data from two sites.

"Sluggish prices for commodities and a glut of oversupply of many commodities did not stop the world’s largest mining equipment makers from showing off their latest and greatest machines and technology starting with the world’s largest equipment trade show, bauma 2016 in Munich, Germany.From April 8-14, an estimated 580,000 visitors from 200 countries visited the show that featured 3,423 exhibitors from 58 countries. While primarily a show for construction equipment, the mining footprint has grown over the years. Among the largest exhibits was that of Liebherr, which brought more than 100 products, had an outdoor exhibition stand, a stand for the components division and a career stand under the motto “Be Part of Something Bigger.” One of the biggest aspects of the exhibit was its mining products where the company staged the first-ever professional table tennis match in the 130 m3 (170 cu yd) dump body of the T 264 mining truck. The top German players Timo Boll and Patrick Franziska with their trainer Jörg Robkopf faced Austria’s singles world champion from 2003, Werner Schlager, and the reigning Team Europe champions Chen Weixing and Stefan Fegerl.“Bauma 2016 was an absolute success for Liebherr. With this year’s appearance we were once again able to show our innovative strength, performance and technological diversity to a very large and international audience from the industry. We conducted interesting discussions with numerous customers and partners from various countries and discussed new projects,” said Stefan Heissler, Member of the board of directors of the Liebherr Group.Likewise, Caterpillar, the world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment had a large presence at the show with more than 60 products and 12,000 m2 (129,000 sq ft)of exhibit space. Among the iconic yellow mining equipment that was on display was the 6015B hydraulic mining shovel."

Industrial grinding machines used in the mineral processing industries are mostly of the tumbling mill type. These mills exist in various types: ball, rod, pebble, autogenous, and semi-autogenous. Balls and rods are traditionally media shapes used in the tumbling mills. In resent years, as an alternative to balls, grinding charges with various shapes are being used. Cylpebs are slightly tapered cylindrical grinding charges with length equaling diameter, and all the edges being radiused. Cylpebs of equal diameter and length have 50% greater surface area and 45% greater weight than balls of the same material. In addition, they have 9% higher bulk density than steel balls, or 12% higher bulk density than cast balls. An important advantage of cylpebs over balls is that cylpebs produce narrower granulometric distribution due to their shapes. However, some discrepancies were found in the literature regarding the milling performance of cylpebs in comparison with balls (Chi, 2004). In recent studies, Chi (2004) has provided detailed information on cylpebs and has compared these to balls in relation to media mass, size distribution, surface area, and input specific energy. Ipek (2006) has investigated the effects of cylpebs and balls with equal mass and surface area on the breakage rate of quartz, using cylpebs and balls separately. Similarly, Lameck and Moys (2006) have investigated the effects of balls and worn balls on breakage rate of material using worn balls as grinding environment. However, no study has attempted to investigate the effects of grinding environment other than balls on the brekage distribution. As indicated by Prasher (1987), the breakage distribution function is independent of the following variables in ball mills: hold-up (Mika et al., 1967; Kelsall et al. 1969), mill speed and ball load (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1972), media load and ball density (Kelsall et al., 1973), mill diameter (Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976), and powder charge (Shoji et al. 1980). The aim of the present paper is to compare the effects of cylpebs and balls on the breakage distribution function of quartz with respect to same mass and same surface area. BACKGROUND Comminution as a rate process is called kinetic approach. Studies on the kinetic approach are reviewed by Oner (2001). Oner states that grinding kinetics are based on studies by Kolmogorov in 1941 and that Robert (1950) is the first to suggest this approach. Later, Melzak, Loeveday, and Reid have improved the grinding kinetics equation; and, Austin and Lynch have conducted two basic studies on the analytical solutions of these equations. Considering the results of studies comparing the size reduction mechanisms, it has been accepted that breakage constitutes of two operations. These two basic operations, first defined by Epstein (1948), are those of selection of material for breakage and the distribution of breakage material to particle sizes smaller than the initial size (Lynch, 1977). Epstein defined the two operations as: ? Pn(y), the probability of breakage of a particle size in the nth step of the breakage process. ? F(x,y), the cumulative distributions by weight of particles of size x<y arising from the breakage of a unit mass of a size y. Probability of breakage is called a selection or a breakage-rate function (Si). Characteristics size distribution after breakage is called a breakage distribution or appearance function (Bi,j). Due to the difficulties in representing particle size distributions mathematically and constantly, the batch equation based on particle size fraction is suggested. Thus, as is the case in breakage distribution and specific rate of breakage, the breakage parameters were defined by batch grinding experiments conducted in laboratories (Oner, 2001). When effective breakage occurs in the mill, the breakage of material with single feed size fraction usually fits first order grinding kinetics and the specific rate of breakage values can be calculated through the slope of semi-log plot. The values of the breakage distributions are deduced from the size distributions at short grinding times where there is mainly size 1 material breaking and only small amount of smaller sizes to rebreak (Austin et. al., 1984). B values can be calculated by using BII. [ ] where j is the top size of the charge, Pi(t) is the cumulative percent undersize of i th size interval at the short grinding time which gives no more than about 30% broken out of the top size interval. Cumulative primary breakage distribution, Bi,j, is also defined in an empirical form by [ ] where xi is the top size and Bi,j is the weight fraction of primary breakage products. The parameters F, ? and ß define the size distribution of the material being ground. On plotting size versus Bi,j on log scale, the slope of the lower portion of the curve gives the value of ?, the slope of the upper portion of the curve gives the value of ß, and F is the intercept as in Fig.1. "Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the few years. Accidents rates are at a "plateau" and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas disaster, organizations that have "exemplary" safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Other classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA’s Challenger and Columbia disasters and even the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Looking into the root causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization’s mindset? What characterizes these organizations’ decision-making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there specific cultural features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since 1994, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions, based on extensiveresearch since 1997 of organizations that suffered unexpected disasters.The Piper Alpha Oil Rig disaster in the North Sea, on the 6 July 1988, was one of the most pivotal events in safety around the world. It changed the thinking and focus of governments, whole industries and led to numerous books and papers. It resulted in new legislation, textbooks and a critical self-examination by the oil and gas industry.In short, an explosion and fire occurred when a pipe started leaking gas and ignited. A temporary flange, with no safety valve, was used to block off this pipe during a maintenance operation the previous shift. The permit to advise operators not to start the pumps on this line was misplaced and lost. Several deficiencies, problems and system failures coincided. A key factor was that the water deluge system was inoperable at the time and failed to extinguish the large fire that erupted, followed by an even larger gas explosion. The accommodation unit, situated on top of the oil rig, was the main "killing field" - most men gathered here to await instructions (which never came) and where they died from smoke inhalation. Later, a large explosion of the gas pipeline from an adjoined rig exploded and killed more people.The line of events and the associated system failures are all very relevant in the analysis of the accident, and provide the only insight into what caused the accident. But much "further back", inside the organization’s culture, lurks more dark matter. The first inclination is to ask what was "deficient" in the culture. Did they not care enough about safety, or about their people? Did they have a culture where production decisions were more important than safety considerations? Did they ‘coerce’ supervisors and employees to ignore safety precautions or did they just "fly by the seat of their pants"?Not surprisingly, it is very difficult to identify the true nature of the culture in that business because in such an aftermath of death and destruction, no one dare say that the safety culture was a ‘positive one, focused and caring’ or that the company was doing well in safety and that this is only a freak accident. Indeed, there were many deficiencies in the organization’s systems and procedures, such as the permit to work system.But there are some niggling questions: How is then that the Piper Alpha Oil Rig was actually considered the company’s most productive and safest oil rig in the North Sea? Why would this rig win a safety competition, 6 months before the disaster, with the deficient permit as its most outstanding successful system?"

Never known as a conference to shy away from its share of off-color jokes, the Colorado Mineral Processing Division?s Annual Meeting returned to the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO April 26-28 for its 62nd edition, this one held under the theme ?Does size matter (is bigger always better).? With the predictable jokes sprinkled in here and there, and a few unpredictable ones as well, the three-day conference featured a healthy mix of talks about some of the latest technical developments in the field of mineral processing, as well as insightful looks at some new operations in the western United States. This year, the Colorado MPD also launched the Wagner Equipment Student Scholarship program.

This report contains the papers presented at the Technology Transfer Seminar on Ground Control Aspects of Coal Mine Design held by the Bureau of Mines on March 6, 1973, in Lexington, Ky. Seminar attendance consisted of representatives from the coal mining industry, universities, mining consultants, instrument manufacturers, and local, State, and Federal Government. The purpose of this meeting, one of a series of Technology Transfer seminars, was to provide the coal mining industry with detailed information about recently developed techniques, equipment, and instruments which can be used in the solution of coal mine design problems and to discuss results and direction of research in mine design. The report includes opening remarks by Joseph J. Yancik, Acting Assistant Director--Mining; an overview of the Federal Bureau of mines approach to mine design; three papers an problems associated with the design of panels; five papers on coal mine roof problems; three papers on long wall problems; and the comments made by- the participants on the Bureau-industry panel discussion.

The metallurgical heart of the majority of copper oxide processes is the heap leaching operation. Fresh low grade sulfide ores is a far greater challenge.The success of this unit operation is so important that operators need to understand the ramifications of their decisions or non-decisions and how they could affect the downstream processing. Heap leaching is an operation that can be described as a scientific art whereby principles of science can be used to guide experienced personnel in attaining their goals. Recent advances have been made based on better understanding the ore characteristics. The success of a heap leach operation, or otherwise, is dependent upon a number of factors, notably: The type of ore to be treated The extent of testwork completed to define the process The interpretation of the testwork results Ore preparation prior to stacking Agglomeration and curing requirements Other issues are: Compliance with the ’smaller’ requirements of environmental authorities Adequate and timely drainage of solution from the base of a leaching lift The degree of saturation in the pads Heap porosity – coarser or finer ore, which is better? Higher or lower irrigation rates – which would produce a better result? Laying out irrigation pipework for ease of operation and maintenance The addition of water, raffinate during agglomeration where needed The heap leaching of sulfide ores, including chalcopyrite, via enhanced bacterial leaching is discussed. INTRODUCTION Over the last twenty years, production of extremely pure copper from solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW) has become more common in a market of real declining prices for copper metal. This paper touches on a number of heap leach operations and experiences. These projects were subjected to extensive engineering design and resulted in low capital cost, efficient operations with a number of lessons learned. The key to these operations was the performance of the heaps and associated fluid collection systems rather than the plants themselves.

The following observations on the mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain&apos;s Flat, New South Wales, are based upon the examination of a collection of specimens made during a brief visit to the mine in January, 1942, in conjunction with earlier studies of specimens and mill products, which have &apos;been the subject of various Mineragraphic Reports, Captain&apos;s Flat is about 35 miles south of Canberra, and is connected with the main line from Goulburn to Bombala by a branch line to Bungendore, 23 miles away from the mine.The geology of the mine has been described by Kenny and Mulholland2 and by Harper.3 The country consists of Silurian sediments, which have been invaded by a composite sill of quartz-felspar-porphyry. Both sediments and sill have been folded gently, the axial lines of the folds trending north and south. In the vicinity of the orebodies the folds are steeper, and thru,st faults are associated with the anticlines. The intense compression and shearing that accompanied the faulting has converted the adjacent porphyry to schist. The Captain&apos;s Flat orebodies occur along such a zone of shearing and faulting, on the eastern limb of a steep, north-pitching anticline. At their southern end the orebodies are enclosed in the slates underlying the porphyry, but the northerly pitch of the fold carries the slate to greater depth in the northern part of the mine, where the orebody lies beween schistose porphyry on the hanging wall and massive porphyry in the footwall.THE OREBODIESThe orebodies occur along a N.-S. strike length of 4,200 ft., and from the point of view of mining, fall into three sections: the Elliot&apos;s Section to the north, the Central Section, and the Keating&apos;s Section to the south. The Keating&apos;s Section is separated from the Central Section by 500-600 ft. of mineralised ground of so low a grade as&apos; to be called barren, and is offset about 125 ft. to the &apos;east of the Central body by an oblique fault striking N.300E. The only nickel smelter and the only active nickel mine in the United States is Glenbrook Nickel Co., a joint venture (50% each) of Cominco Resources International Ltd. and Cominco Ltd. In 1989, with the nickel price riding high between $2.30 and $2.70/kg ($5 and $6/lb), Glenbrook seized the opportunity to purchase and recommission a southwestern Oregon ferronickel smelter and the adjacent nickel-ore mine. This Douglas County site is only about 97 km (60 miles) due east of the Pacific Ocean, and California&apos;s border lies a similar distance to the south. Hanna Mining Co. had closed the operation in 1987. And the following year, the equipment had been largely stripped for salvage value. From November 1990 through August 1992, the mine supplied an average 5 kt/d (5500 wet stpd) of ore. Currently, with import ore supplying 40% of the smelter feed, the mine&apos;s daily tonnage averages 4.2 kt (4600 wet st). From November 1990 through August 1993, the mine has delivered 2.1 Mt (2.3 million st) of ore grading 1.22% nickel with an average moisture content of 26%. Buffaloed nickel? A nickel is not worth what it was in 1989 and neither is ferronickel, with recent prices hovering around $1.13/kg ($2.50/lb). To survive, Glenbrook has focused on increasing smelter production to lower its operating costs. And this strategy has triggered several bold moves: • a new, $30 million, port facility and • a 10-year importation contract for ore from New Caledonia, an island approximately 1000 km (625 miles) east of Australia. For a Glenbrook update, a May 25, 1993 visit was made to the company&apos;s Oregon operations - the mine and smelter near Riddle plus its new Coos Bay port facility. Unfortunately, as the rain came down that day, so did news of another temporary shutdown. The previous suspension had lasted from Dec. 20, 1992 until Feb. 22, 1993. Barely three months back to work on a wet May afternoon, more than 250 of Glenbrook&apos;s approximately 300 employees contemplated yet another shutdown, effective July 31, 1993.

"The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units."
